    A 23-year-old man fished out an alligator that was swimming along the boats at The Wharf Marina in Southwest D.C.

    Imagine Phoenix Norwood’s surprise when he heard there was a four-foot alligator swimming among the boats at The Wharf Marina in Southwest D.C.

    “At first I heard about it … then I started looking for it, and I actually saw it twice,” Norwood told WTOP.

    The 23-year-old resident of The Wharf thought the gator was fake at first.

    Then, it started swimming. That’s when he grabbed a dip net and fished it out Thursday.

    “If I had just let it be on its own, it would have probably swam away again, and authorities were about like 10, 15 minutes away at the time,” Norwood said. “I had to get it at that point in time. I probably should have had shoes on, though.”

    Norwood is a reptile enthusiast and an avid fossil collector.

    “I got some crocodile teeth and all that stuff, but I don’t really have experience with live gators,” Norwood said. “This is definitely a first for me.”

    Norwood held the reptile until officials with D.C. animal control arrived to secure it. They will work with a group to relocate the animal to a more appropriate environment.

    Hopefully, far away.

    Where did it come from? There’s plenty of speculation, but authorities guess it was someone’s pet that was released into the Washington Channel recently.

    You may have seen videos of them online already, but have you tried one in person?

    The decadence, the richness, the flavor explosion — all packed into a one-of-a-kind pastry called a “chimney cake!”

    You can find this tasty, cinnamon bun-like dessert — baked to perfection, filled with ice cream and topped with all manner of fresh fruits and drizzles — at the Wharf in Southwest D.C. It comes from a new franchise called Lumier’s Chimney Cake.

    The popular European-style dessert franchise recently opened up its first D.C.-area location (also among the first in the entire U.S.) and it has already become immensely popular among locals and tourists alike.

    In today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” WTOP’s Matt Kaufax went down to The Wharf to see what all the hype is about.

    Round-the-world racing yachts dock at The Wharf in DC — see them up close – WTOP News

    Eleven clippers will remain docked at The Wharf for a week, before setting off on the race’s final leg back across the Atlantic.

    The more than 40,000 mile “Clipper Round the World Yacht Race” made an impressive arrival before docking at The Wharf in Southwest D.C. Monday morning.

    Eleven clippers will remain there for a week before setting off on the final leg back across the Atlantic Ocean.

    Hannah Brewis and a first mate are the only professional sailors on the yacht sponsored by Events DC, which was the first of 11 identical 70-foot racing yachts to dock at The Wharf on Monday morning.

    “The rest of the crew is made up of total amateurs, with a wide difference, variety of sailing experience,” Brewis said, standing on the dock, shortly after the D.C. team was welcomed by several dozen early-morning supporters. “Some have never sailed, some have sailed a little bit.”

    The trip began Sept. 3, 2023, in Portsmouth, U.K., where the race will finish.

    “We’ve been to Spain. We’ve been to Uruguay, South Africa, Australia, Vietnam, China, Seattle, Panama — that’s our route so far, and now, finally into Washington, D.C.,” Brewis said.

    The race leg from Panama ended near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on Friday and Saturday. Monday morning’s travels to The Wharf was a short commute for the yachts, which also caused an approximately 15-minute delay for commuters in vehicles.

    “We had to wait for it to be opened. The tricky part was we had to make sure the fleet was there at exactly 4:45 in the morning,” Brewis said. The Virginia Department of Transportation has warned commuters to expect a brief delay.

    “We got there with perfect timing. We all transited through, no stress. It was really great, it was really cool,” Brewis said.

    The yachts will remain docked at The Wharf all week. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, “you can actually come onboard, and see what it’s like to be on one of these big ocean racing yachts,” Brewis said.

    On Tuesday, the clippers will set off on the race’s final leg across the Atlantic, heading toward Portsmouth, U.K. The send-off will be open to the public and include fireworks.

    DC’s newest pop-up attraction brings your favorite Disney-Pixar movies to life

    Imagine your favorite Disney and Pixar characters brought to life on an 18-hole mini golf course.

    Well, actually, you don’t have to.

    In today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” WTOP’s Matt Kaufax heads down to The Wharf in D.C. to experience the magic of Pixar Putt!

    The District’s newest pop-up just opened and is here through the summer. Put on by Junto Entertainment, its creators say all “kids” from ages 4 to 104 are welcome to come out and take their best swing!

    Whether you’re fighting an Omnidroid with the Incredibles family, traveling the high seas with Nemo and friends, whipping up the perfect plate of Ratatouille, or soaring to infinity and beyond with Woody and Buzz, there’s something here for everyone. And it can get pretty competitive, too.

    As Matt found out, no two holes at Pixar Putt are the same. Sometimes, your ball gets dropped into a vortex. Other times, it takes flight in the house from the Disney-Pixar movie “Up.” No matter the adventure, you’re guaranteed to relive some core memories.

    Pixar Putt’s team says walk-ins are welcome, but if you’re coming with a big group or on a day where it could be busy (like a weekend), they recommend purchasing tickets in advance. Tickets and more information are available online.
