Umbrella Academy Season 3 Catch-Up Ahead of Season 4

    [ad_1]

June 2022 was a long time ago, but it might feel even longer for Umbrella Academy fans who binged season three in a couple of sittings and then moved on to other pop-culture obsessions. The show is a lot of fun and season three was killer—but it’s been over two years since the Netflix series dropped new episodes. Are you ready to dive into its fourth and final season?

We’ve already peeked at the “previously on” montage that kicks off season four, and frankly, it didn’t clear all that much up. So here’s a crash course in what you need to remember going into season four, which runs just six episodes and premieres August 8 on Netflix.

What happened in season 3 of Umbrella Academy?

When Umbrella Academy—based loosely on the Gerard Way-Gabriel Bá Dark Horse Comic series about the super-powered and dysfunctional adopted Hargreeves siblings—kicked off its third season, the main characters were bouncing back from averting an apocalypse at the end of season two. (They did that in season one too.) Season two involved a lot of time travel, and it ended with the characters in 2019—but in an alternate reality where the Umbrella Academy, here called “the Sparrow Academy,” had mostly different members. One is a still-alive version of their deceased sibling, Ben (Justin H. Min).

There’s instant hostility, and the Umbrella kids decamp to the quirky Hotel Obsidian. There are fights between the factions (and between the siblings), but also occasional outbursts of teamwork—and even a romance between Umbrella Luther (Tom Hopper) and Sparrow Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez). Throughout the season, characters grapple with the fallout of their time travel, both on a personal level (problematically, all of the Umbrella kids’ mothers died before they were born in this particular timeline) and on a more “the universe is freaking out due to all the anomalies” level, thanks to a powerful Kugelblitz in their midst.

Notably, Umbrella Academy season three addressed leading actor Elliot Page’s coming out as a trangender man by simply having his character, Viktor, follow the same path; it was handled seamlessly within the story. The season also saw Klaus (Robert Sheehan) dying and returning to life, repeatedly; Five (Aidan Gallagher) meeting an older version of himself; Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) nearly succumbing to the grief of losing her daughter from the season two time-travel story; and Lila (Ritu Arya) and Diego (David Castañeda) almost figuring out how to be co-parents.

Throughout the season, there’s a growing sense that Umbrella/Sparrow patriarch Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore)—who’s actually an extraterrestrial being of unknown age from another dimension—is up to no good, even more than usual. It’s all tied into the Hotel Obsidian, the setting for Luther and Sloane’s wedding and where all the surviving characters gather as the Kugelblitz begins decimating reality around them.

What happened at the end of Umbrella Academy season 3?

Reginald revealed that the Hotel Obsidian is really a machine in another dimension, built by whoever created the universe, and couching a portal that will reset that universe; there’s a mirror-image hotel called the Hotel Oblivion on the other side. The Hargreeves have to work together to figure out the machine’s elaborate puzzle, which (in typical fashion) is a trying task. At last, though, Allison manages to seemingly kill Reginald, who’s draining the super-powered life force from his “children” to power the machine, and start the reset process.

At the very end of season three, we see that Allison’s daughter and her husband from season two are alive—as is Reginald, along with his long-deceased wife Abigail, who are bigwigs in this brand-new timeline. While other characters are restored to health (Five, who’d lost an arm along the way, is now healed), Luther is distraught to realize that Sloane, his new wife, is missing. Also: nobody has their superpowers anymore. Most are totally freaked out, and all scamper in different directions. In a mid-credits scene, we see Ben—the only remaining Sparrow—on a train in South Korea—perhaps the same train where he was shown being born in a flashback at the start of season three.

What’s season 4 of Umbrella Academy going to be about?

Here’s the word from Netflix: “The Hargreeves siblings have scattered after the climactic showdown at the Hotel Oblivion led to a complete reset of their timeline. Stripped of their powers, each is left to fend for themselves and find a new normal—with wildly varying degrees of success. Yet the trappings of their uncanny new world prove too hard to ignore for very long. Their father Reginald, alive and well, has stepped out of the shadows and into the public eye, overseeing a powerful and nefarious business empire.

A mysterious association known as the Keepers holds clandestine meetings believing the reality they’re living in is a lie and a great reckoning is coming. As these strange new forces conspire around them, the Umbrella Academy must come together one last time—and risk upsetting the shaky peace they’ve all endured so much to secure—to finally set things right.” New characters this season will be played by Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, and David Cross.

When can I watch season 4 of Umbrella Academy?

All six episodes arrive August 8 on Netflix.

The Hargreeves clan will return for a final round of end of the world time travel hijinks in season four of The Umbrella Academy, Netflix’s acclaimed series based on the Dark Horse Comics series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, and adapted for the platform by Jeremy Slater and Steve Blackman. Check out the first trailer!

In season four, it looks like the team is getting ready for at least one more time loop for its final run; as per usual with the Umbrella Academy gang, things set off with more explosive action and sibling superhero shenanigans after last season’s unsettling reset and cliffhanger ending. With only six episodes in the final season—the previous entries have all had 10—the action will have to be more compacted, though from the looks of this trailer there’ll still be time for the weird stuff (three words: Footloose dance battle! Three more words: sentient telekinetic cube!) that makes The Umbrella Academy so fun to watch—this time more tentacles, Santa Claus, Klaus Cults 2: Electric Boogaloo, and Viktor powering up Super-Saiyan style.

Here’s the official season four description from Netflix: “The Hargreeves siblings have scattered after the climactic showdown at the Hotel Oblivion led to a complete reset of their timeline. Stripped of their powers, each is left to fend for themselves and find a new normal—with wildly varying degrees of success. Yet the trappings of their uncanny new world prove too hard to ignore for very long. The Umbrella Academy stars Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, and Ritu Arya. You can catch up on seasons one through three of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix before season four premieres August 8.

  • Gerard Way Returns to Comics with Paranoid Gardens

Since 1994, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has dipped in and out of making comics. Beyond teaming with Gabriel Bá on The Umbrella Academy, he started DC’s Young Animal imprint, teamed with acclaimed artists such as Nick Derington and Becky Cloonan, and co-created Peni Parker for Marvel. After a three-year absence from comics, Way has a new comic dropping in July from publisher Dark Horse.

Co-written with Shaun Simon (his collaborator on The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys) and drawn by Judge Dredd’s Chris Weston, Paranoid Gardens is described as “Derek meets Doctor Who in six psychotic episodes.” The book focuses on a care center worker named Loo, who decides to rise through the ranks of her (possibly sentient) hospital, but not without some roadblocks: along with corrupt staff and theme park cults, she’ll have to face “her own personal demons and trauma to meet this challenge and discover what secrets the gardens hold.”

“I’m excited to be back with my incredibly handsome and talented brother-from-another-basement Shaun Simon,” said Way, “and honored the masterful Chris Weston joined us to create a visually powerful and emotionally tangible physical object that is this comic. I’m now more complete getting to share something we’ve wanted to for a very long time, and working with this fantastic group of individuals in the process.”

In his own statement, Weston said he, Simon, and Way have created “a wild and psychedelic tale that combines Kafkaesque nightmares with sweet Silver Age reveries. […] You’ll find a curious care-home peopled with aliens, ghosts and caped heroes recovering from psychotic episodes. The very ground it’s built on is febrile and fertile; and lusted after by the minions of Mammon. It’s the perfect remedy for all those stricken with super-hero fatigue and needing a fix of something a bit more mind-bending and unpredictable.”

Paranoid Gardens’ six-issue run will start on July 17.

  • We’ve Got Our First Look at the Final Season of ‘The Umbrella Academy’!

We’ve Got Our First Look at the Final Season of ‘The Umbrella Academy’!

    [ad_1]

The final season of Netflix’s hit series The Umbrella Academy is drawing nearer, and now we finally have our first look at the series’ final episodes thanks to Netflix’s preview of its upcoming 2024 titles.

Of course, being part of a sizzle reel, it’s an incredibly brief look just to get us excited all over again. The short sequence, which features the Hargreeves siblings each raising a glass, comes just after the 30-second mark in the video below:

Fans of The Umbrella Academy, are both anticipating and dreading the release of season 4. This is because, while we’re all desperate to know what happens after season 3 ended on a massive cliffhanger, Netflix has confirmed season 4 will be the show’s last season. Since it first hit the streaming platform in 2019, The Umbrella Academy has been one of Netflix’s most-watched shows and has received high praise from critics, as well as six Emmy nominations.

The show follows the superpowered Hargreeves siblings, who are reunited after the death of their father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore). Reginald adopted all seven of the Hargreeves siblings, who were among a group of 43 superpowered individuals born simultaneously on October 1, 1989, to women who had not previously been pregnant. As children, the group formed a superhero team called the Umbrella Academy, but went their separate ways and became estranged as adults. Their father’s death, though, reunites them and sets them off on a mission to stop an imminent apocalypse.

After changing the timeline in season 2, season 3 saw the Hargreeves in an alternate reality where Reginald adopted six different children (and an alternate version of one of the original Hargreeves, Ben (Justin H. Min)) to form the Sparrow Academy instead of the Umbrella Academy. However, this Reginald has grand plans to reset the universe and build it to his liking. In the season finale, he is revealed to have succeeded but created a world with some anomalies, such as the Hargreeves siblings losing their powers. Fortunately, season 4 is in the works and will hopefully hold some answers. Here’s everything we know about The Umbrella Academy season 4 so far.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode count

One major detail the creators have revealed is the episode count of season 4. Seasons 1 to 3 were all ten episodes, so many thought it was safe to expect the same from season 4. However, it has been confirmed that The Umbrella Academy‘s final season will only be six episodes long. The showrunners have promised that the episodes will be great, but fans are a little salty they’re not getting their usual ten episodes.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 release window

The Umbrella Academy season 4 does not have a confirmed release date yet. However, Netflix confirmed that the season had already started filming on February 1st. Considering that filming will likely last several months yet, plus post-production, a late 2023 or early 2024 release date seems likely.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 cast

    (Netflix)

The Umbrella Academy season 4 will feature a mix of new and familiar faces. Viewers can, of course, expect to see all of the original Umbrella Academy members. This means Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Five (Aidan Gallagher), and Viktor (Elliot Page) will all be back for season 4. Additionally, the Sparrow Academy’s Ben (Min) will also return, as he followed the Umbrellas to the reset world, as did Diego’s partner, Lila (Rita Arya). Since he created and now has influence over the reset world, Colm’s Reginald is also expected to return, alongside his newly resurrected wife, Abigail Hargreeves (Lisa Repo-Martell).

There are also several characters whose returns are uncertain, but possible. It is unknown yet if the Sparrows, aside from Ben, will be returning in season 4. Most of them died in season 3, but given the reset, Marcus (Justin Cornwell), Fei (Britne Oldford), Alphonso (Jake Epstein), Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), and Jayme (Cazzie David) could all potentially appear. There is especially likely more to Sloane’s story, given the fact she was with the Hargreeves when the reset happened but oddly disappeared during the transition. Previously deceased characters like Stanley (Javon Walton), Harlan (Callum Keith Rennie), and The Handler (Kate Walsh) could also all potentially come back, considering the flexibility of a new universe.

Lastly, Netflix recently announced some exciting new addition to the season 4 cast. Parks and Recreation and The Last of Us star, Nick Offerman, has joined the cast, along with his wife, Megan Mullally, who is best known for her appearance in Will & Grace. They will be playing a married couple in the show, Drs. Gene and Jean Thibedeau, who Variety reports are “a married pair of community college professors from New Mexico who wear sensible footwear and suffer from the most extreme case of deja vu this timeline has ever seen.” Arrested Development’s David Cross has also joined the cast as Sy Grossman, a businessman seeking to reunite with his estranged daughter.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 plot

Colm Feore as Sir Reginald Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy
    (Netflix)

So far, the exact details of The Umbrella Academy‘s season 4 plot have not been revealed. However, based on the ending of season 3, we know a few things. For one, we know that the season, similar to season 3, will take place in an alternate reality. This one is particularly interesting because the Hargreeves have lost their powers and will have to experience living as regular people for a time. Each already seems to be on their path, too, with Diego leaving with Lila (who is expecting a child), Luther departing to find Sloane, and Allison being reunited with her husband and daughter, who she met in the 1960s in season 2.

Hence, it is expected that all of these story arcs will be explored more, as will the story of Reginald and Abigail. We don’t really know a whole lot about them, aside from Reginald being an alien and Abigail previously having been deceased. Additionally, there are bound to be some unexpected twists and turns, monsters, and chaos in this unnatural reset world. Showrunner Steve Blackmen also teased that the season 3 post-credit scene will factor into season 4. The post-credit scene sees Sparrow Ben on a subway in Korea. We don’t know why on earth he’s on a subway in Korea, but apparently, it’s important!

Blackman also gave a rough outline of what to expect from season 4. He told Decider:

I do know what Season 4 is and we leave them in a pretty precarious place with the question that I hope the audience is asking themselves is: are they better off without their powers? Are they better off with them? Did Hargreeves give them the gift and say, look, you’ve hated the powers, it’s been the bane of your existence. Now you are free, you are, quote unquote, normal. Can they live like that and be normal? I have a way that they’ll get their powers back. But also, Hargreeves got something very special back himself—he got his wife. But that is also a very complicated story, given that they’re aliens, which we will also hopefully touch on next year. The world, if you look carefully, is slightly different as well, this timeline, a lot of Hargreeves Enterprises things around. So, there’s a lot of places to go in Season 4, and I’ve got a really good plan for it if we get another year.
