  • Matt Damon Calls Oscar Campaigning ‘Backwards’ and Says Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Felt Like the ‘Last Big Movie on Film That I’m Ever Going to Make’

    Matt Damon appeared on Netflix’s “Skip Intro” podcast during his press tour for the streamer’s crime thriller “The Rip,” which happens to be releasing in the thick of Oscar season. Damon is no stranger to the awards campaigning with three acting Oscar noms under his belt and a screenplay win for “Good Will Hunting.” He recently hit the trail hard as a cast member in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which won best picture in 2024.

    When podcast host Krista Smith asked Damon what he likes missing out on when it comes to Hollywood, the actor didn’t hesitate with an answer: “Awards season. 100%.”

    “What I don’t like is this idea of campaigning,” Damon explained. “It seems completely backwards to me and odd. Maybe it’s good for movies, just having it all out there and gets the culture thinking and talking about movies. I hope that’s the case…”

    Unfortunately for Damon, he is likely to be campaigning once again during the 2025-2026 Oscar season as the star of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.” The actor told Smith that he is “still kind of unpacking” the experience of making Nolan’s Greek epic but noted: “It did have a profound effect on me.”

    “Doing ‘The Odyssey’ this last year, it felt like my one chance in my life to make a David Lean movie, you know?” Damon said. “That I was making the last big movie on film that I was ever going to get to make.”

    Damon had previously said of the film: “If I look objectively at what was required to do that job, I think it came at just the right time in my life. I think I would have been miserable 20 years ago, trying to do that job. You were uncomfortable every day. But I really enjoyed, like, deeply enjoyed every minute of it,”

    “Intellectually, I understood that concept of you’re not in control of what happens, but you are in control of how you feel about it — it’s easier said than done,” he continued. “But to really feel gratitude — and I think because it was tied into not only the joy of being able to have a role that great with a director that great with a group of people that great and a story that great, but in that sense of nostalgia I had for how I started, how I came into the business, the feeling I had when I was shooting ‘School Ties’ and Freddie Francis was the cinematographer and I, you know, and I was like, ‘This is really happening.’”

    “The Odyssey” is the first Hollywood feature film to be entirely shot with Imax film cameras. Damon previously marveled over the technical feat on an episode of the “New Heights” podcast.

    “Imax cameras are really loud. It sounds like a blender, like a Cuisinart in your face when the camera’s close to you. So there’s never been these dialogue [scenes in Imax],” Damon said. “We couldn’t have this conversation with a normal Imax camera because you wouldn’t be able to hear us. They built this giant thing around the Imax for those dialogue scenes and a system of mirrors so your eye line would be close to the camera and you could talk to the other actor. The amount of work that went into figuring out how to do [that], because he wanted to do 100 percent Imax and he did it!”

    A new Imax film casing called a “blimp” was created for “The Odyssey” to significantly reduce the noise Imax cameras produce.

    “The blimp system is a game-changer,” Nolan told Empire magazine last year. “You can be shooting a foot from [an actor’s] face while they’re whispering and get usable sound. What that opens up are intimate moments of performance on the world’s most beautiful format.”

  • Mia Goth Declares ‘The Odyssey’ Better Than ‘Star Wars,’ Sorta

    Few actresses are as in demand as Mia Goth, and rightfully so. The captivating, soulful star of Pearl and MaXXXine can currently be seen in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, and later this year she plays Melantho in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Then, next year, she’s one of the villains in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. That’s an impressive lineup of highly secretive projects, and, in new interviews, she heaped slightly different levels of praise on each.

    Speaking to Collider, Goth said the following about Star Wars: Starfighter. “It was incredible. I had the most fun on a film set, I think, that I’ve ever had. I mean, Shawn Levy is just electric. When you meet him, you can’t help but feel that electricity. It just rubs off on you, you know. And he has a way of working with his crew, and he’s so bonded to everyone around him, and we had such a blast. I think people are gonna really love the movie.”

    Pretty exciting stuff. However, here’s what Goth said to the Hollywood Reporter about working on The Odyssey. “That was one of the greatest experiences of my life. It really was. It was profound,” Goth said. “I’ve been such a fan of [Christopher Nolan’s] work for years. And so to have that opportunity and to witness him and how he directs was incredible. I took a lot from that. The trust that he has in actors was enlightening.”

    Obviously, she has nothing but nice things to say about each film, each director, and each experience. However, Star Wars: Starfighter was “the most fun” she had “on a film set” “ever,” while The Odyssey was “one of the greatest experiences of [her] life.” That’s her whole life versus just being on a film set. It seems The Odyssey wins.

    In all seriousness, though, this is just Goth doing her best to hit the talking points her publicist gave her about films she can’t say anything about. We totally get it. She’s the best. And we can’t wait to see her in both films.

    The Odyssey opens on July 17. Star Wars: Starfighter opens on May 28, 2027.

  • The Most Anticipated Movies of 2026

    2026 is looking to be a top-tier year at the movie theater.

    The latest installments in the Dune, Spider-Man and Avengers franchises will be released, while millennial nostalgia will continue at the multiplex with Devil Wears Prada and Practical Magic sequels. And new films from Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig will both be gracing Imax screens. (Though not at the same time, so don’t expect a Barbenheimer repeat.)

    As for star power, movies with Jacob Elordi, Tom Cruise, Ryan Gosling, Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson and Ariana Grande are on the docket. Zendaya will have a particularly big year with the A24 release The Drama, Nolan’s The Odyssey and the third Dune, plus Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

    These are the most anticipated movies (with release dates) heading to theaters in 2026.

    The Odyssey could wind up being Christopher Nolan’s best movie yet.

    Nolan’s The Odyssey will be released in United States theaters on July 17, 2026, from Universal Pictures. An adaptation of the ancient Greek epic by Homer, its stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as Penelope.

    Why could The Odyssey be Christopher Nolan’s best movie?

    With a new trailer for The Odyssey having recently been released, this movie has the best to be in Nolan’s filmography yet, as it looks completely different than anything he’s done before. 

    Nolan is great at experimenting with different genres. He goes back to the sci-fi well relatively often — 2010’s Inception, 2014’s Interstellar, and 2020’s Tenet — but he’s also willing to try something new. He’ll make a Batman movie, then he’ll make something about dueling magicians. A war movie and a biopic. We’ve yet to see something like a romantic comedy from him, but maybe someday we could.

    Whenever Nolan takes on a new genre, the results are typically fantastic. The common consensus might be that The Dark Knight is the best of his Batman movies, but Batman Begins is still highly regarded among the superhero film community. When he took on the war movie genre, we got Dunkirk, which was fantastic. And his biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer won all kinds of Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

    Taking on the fantasy genre is a big turn for Nolan — again, he’s never really done anything like this. It looks to be his biggest movie purely in terms of scope to date, and the trailer already proves that he knows exactly what he’s doing. And it doesn’t even show us all too much, as we’ve yet to glimpse the Cyclops or the Sirens.

    We’ll have to wait until next summer to see how it all turns out, but The Odyssey should have all Christopher Nolan fans very, very excited.

  • ‘The Odyssey’ Trailer: Matt Damon Gets Shipwrecked, Fights Monsters and Leads His Army Home in Christopher Nolan’s Epic

    Universal has released the first teaser for “The Odyssey,” Christopher Nolan‘s highly anticipated adaptation of Homer’s legendary saga.

    The film follows the Greek hero Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he travels the long and winding path back home after the Trojan War. Universal released a first-look photo of Damon in costume back in February. Damon stars alongside Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo and more. In addition to directing, Nolan wrote the script and produced the film alongside his wife, Emma Thomas.

    The trailer shows Odysseus get shipwrecked along with his army and make his way back home during a treacherous journey. He and his soldiers are also seen inside the infamous Trojan horse, which was previous teased in a six-minute clip screened before Imax 70mm showings of “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another.” Odysseus walks across land, sails by sea and treks through caves, including one where an ominously large beast appears in the shadows. There are also brief shots of Holland as Odysseus’ son Telemachus and Hathaway as Penelope, Odysseus’ wife.

    Universal said last December that the film would be “shot across the world using brand new Imax film technology.” Universal executive Jim Orr teased at CinemaCon that audiences could expect “a visionary, once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece that Homer himself would quite likely be proud of.”

    Leguizamo compared Nolan’s work ethic to that of an independent filmmaker. “He’s not doing it by committee, he’s not doing it by what the studio says,” the actor said during a recent appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

    “He’s like an indie filmmaker but with crazy money,” Leguizamo added.

    Nolan’s most recent blockbuster was “Oppenheimer,” which won seven Oscars in 2024. The filmmaker told Variety in 2023 that he wasn’t sure which project he’d tackle after “Oppenheimer,” but added, “Whatever I do, I have to feel like I own it completely. I have to make it original to me: The initial seed of an idea may come from elsewhere, but it has to go through my fingers on a keyboard and come out through my eyes alone.”

    “The Odyssey” arrives in theaters July 17.

  • Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Is Getting Theaters to Make Major Upgrades

    Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, is generating such buzz that major movie theaters are taking notice and getting ready. Earlier this year, Regal Cinemas announced plans to build or upgrade new IMAX theaters equipped to play the 2026 blockbuster, and today, Cinemark joined the party, announcing even further upgrades.

    According to Variety, “Cinemark will build three new 70mm film projection systems and four new IMAX with Laser systems in the United States. Cinemark will also upgrade its remaining 12 IMAX screens to IMAX with Laser, a 4K laser projection system developed to deliver the clearest images and best audio through proprietary technology.” Those 70mm locations will be at Cinemark Seven Bridges in Woodridge, IL; Cinemark Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs, CO; and Cinemark Tinseltown in Rochester, NY.

    As of today, there are only about 30 theaters in the world capable of showing films in 70mm IMAX, which is the format Nolan shot the entire film in and will be the preferred format for it to screen in. But, by the time its July 2026 release rolls around, the number is now likely to be closer to 40. Which doesn’t seem like a huge deal overall, but for film fans in those extra cities, it sure is. Plus, there are also the theaters that won’t have 70mm IMAX but are upgrading their IMAX projectors, increasing the picture quality extensively.

    You’d think theaters would always be doing things like this. Making changes, updating technology, etc. But more often than not, it’s not the case. That’s why this news feels more significant than usual. Theaters are looking at an upcoming movie and saying, “We need to be better for this.” It’s a move that’s been a long time coming, especially since, in recent years, IMAX releases of major blockbusters have pretty regularly had higher attendance numbers than normal screenings. Fans know they can wait a few weeks or months to see Sinners at home, but they’ll never ever be able to see it at home on a screen the size of a building. So, people pay a premium and turn out for that.

    The other huge factor here is that The Odyssey is the first feature-length Hollywood film ever shot entirely in 70mm IMAX. It’s a feat that was basically impossible in the past due to the size of the cameras. But, for Nolan, IMAX developed whole new cameras that are smaller and quieter and are now going to allow filmmakers to make even more of their films in the large-scale format. Up next? Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part Three.

    IMAX sold out several key 70mm IMAX screenings of The Odyssey back in July in an unprecedented promotional stunt. Clearly, interest is there. And now, by the time the film comes out, there will be many, many more places to see the film in that format.

    The Odyssey, which stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, and Robert Pattinson, opens July 17, 2026. A teaser has been playing exclusively in theaters for a few months, but expect to see one released online in December, around the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash.

    Elliot Page recently discussed what it was like working with Christopher Nolan again on the filmmaker’s upcoming epic The Odyssey. The two previously worked together on the 2010 sci-fi action heist feature Inception in one of the film’s most prominent supporting roles.

    Page made an appearance at the X-Men: Days of Future Past panel at the 2025 New York Comic Con and reflected on reuniting with director Christopher Nolan after roughly 15 years. “I loved working with him on Inception and loved being a part of that movie,” Page said. “I was just completely jazzed and excited, and [I] basically went and met with Chris and talked about the part, then sat in a room and read the script. It was such a joy to come back.” (via Variety)

    Page, who transitioned in 2020, underscored what made The Odyssey a “more enjoyable” experience. “To come back now, as you can imagine, being more comfortable in yourself makes these sorts of projects more enjoyable,” Page elaborated. “To get to have a Chris Nolan experience again now meant so much to me selfishly.”

    Besides directing, Nolan developed the screenplay for the movie as an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic of the same name. Page’s character in the movie remains under wraps. However, it has been revealed that the film’s cast also includes Matt Damon as Odysseus and Tom Holland as Telemachus, alongside Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and Himesh Patel.

    According to the official logline, the movie follows Odysseus as he “embarks on a long and perilous journey home following the Trojan War, chronicling his encounters with mythical beings such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe.”

    The production for The Odyssey took place between early and mid-2025 and spanned across multiple continents. The movie debuts in theaters in IMAX and other formats on July 17, 2026.

    The actor, while in conversation with Agence-France Presse, revealed that he wrapped up the productions of the Matt Damon starrer and is solely focused on getting the tricks of the superhero right for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. 

    The English native was all praises for the Nolan directorial, as he claimed that the movie adaptation is the “best script” he’s ever read. Calling the filmmaker a collaborator, Holland stated that the former knows exactly what he wants.

    While sitting down for an interview with the media portal, Holland shared that he had the best time working with Christopher Nolan and the rest of the cast members on the sets of The Odyssey.     He further added, “Working with Chris and getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen someone that can work the way that they do, and there is a reason why they’re the best in the business for sure.”

    Meanwhile, the actor also added that the script of the film was one of the best. Elsewhere in the talks, Holland revealed that the offer to star in The Odyssey was “the phone call of a lifetime” and “reminiscent of getting the call about ‘Spider-Man’ 10 years ago. It’s an amazing thing for me. I’m super proud and I’m really, really excited.”

    As for the release dates, The Odyssey will be out in theaters on July 17, 2026, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be dropped by Marvel on July 31, 2026.

    Tom Holland is praising Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey after wrapping up production of the film and right before filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

    Holland is set to play Telemachus in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s classic, which features a star-studded cast.

    “The script is the best script I’ve ever read,” Holland told Agence France-Presse (via France 24).

    On working with Nolan, Holland said the filmmaker “is a real collaborator,” adding, “He knows what he wants… but it is not an environment where you can’t pitch ideas or build characters in certain ways.”

    The Odyssey is slated to premiere on July 17, 2026, and it is an adaptation of the epic poem from Homer and the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War.

    The cast of the film includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, among many others.

    It’s not the first time Holland praises his time with Nolan. In an interview with GQ posted in July, Holland called his experience “amazing” and “the job of a lifetime.”

    “The best experience I’ve had on the film set. Incredible,” Holland told GQ. “It was exciting. It was different. And I think the movie is going to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”

    He continued, “Working with Chris, getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen someone that can work the way that they do, and there is a reason why they’re the best in the business for sure. To get a front row seat to that and to be a part of the process and to collaborate with a true master of his craft and learn from him was the best experience I’ve ever had.”

    Caroline Polachek Channels Circe on “Welcome to My Island”

    On the heels of the “Sunset” video, Caroline Polachek continues to intensify the anticipation of her fourth solo record, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You (a title that automatically makes The Sandman fans think of Polachek wanting to turn into Mason Alexander Park’s portrayal of Desire). Slated for a Valentine’s Day 2023 release, the record has thus far proven to possess nothing but bop after bop (“Billions” and “Bunny Is A Rider” included), with “Welcome to My Island” being the latest example.

    Co-produced by Danny L Harle, Dan Nigro (presently of Olivia Rodrigo repute), James Stack and Charli XCX favorite A. G. Cook, the capriciousness of the sonic landscape is likely a result of so many “minds” involved. To add to that caprice is a video co-directed by Polachek and her current boyfriend, Matt Copson, as they take us on yet another indelible visual safari. One that mirrors the lyrical buffet Polachek is known for serving up. This time around, Polachek seems to be tapping into the classic narrative from The Odyssey that focuses on Circe. Hence, the opening lines (with more than just a slightly goading tone) of the single: “Welcome to my island/See the palm trees wave in the wind/Welcome to my island/Hope you like me, you ain’t leavin’.” Of course, Odysseus could have left at any time, really. For he was given the magic herb of “moly” (yes, it sounds like something else) by Hermes to stave off any effect that Circe’s “witchery” (/potion) might have on him. While the crew of men from his boat were already turned into swine by the time he arrived at Circe’s Hall, impervious-to-her-magic Odysseus is able to make the enchantress promise not to harm the men and to release them from their porcine form.

    After Circe obeys, Odysseus and his crew end up staying “entertained” on the island for an entire year of their own volition. And Odysseus likely would have kept on staying were it not for the influence of his “friends” telling him to “shake off his trance” and get back to the business of returning to Ithaca. What a fool move that was, for he could have stayed chillin’ in paradise with a woman who was into all the freaky shit. But, of course, Odysseus’ “desire” to leave parallels, in many ways, the Garden of Eden narrative, with human nature constantly leading a person to seek “excitement” when “bored” (often synonymous with being relegated to “paradise”—a word itself that borders on a fine line between heaven and hell).

    In the “Welcome to My Island” video, Polachek is sure to emphasize the Circe connection with a close-up shot on her face during the intro as she sings nothing but sweet notes of luring in lieu of actual lyrics. The manner in which she’s filmed also makes it look as though she’s enjoying orgasm-induced ecstasy, whether being fucked by someone else or simply masturbating. The video then cuts to a scene of Polachek in a coffee shop, sporting a giant black bow in the style of Lana Del Rey on the cover of Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. But that’s about the only scene of “normalcy” before things get really fantastical, including yet another nod to Greek mythology wherein Polachek’s head is mounted onto the body of the Chimera of Arezzo sculpture.

    Another cut to Polachek running through a construction-laden street reminds one of that whimsical scene in The Worst Person in the World where Julie (Renate Reinsve) is also running—women love to fucking run, and who can blame them when there’s so much scary shit in this life to run from? But, in Polachek’s case, this is a run of joy, freedom and jubilance as she recites part of the album title-alluding chorus, “Desire, I wanna turn into you.” And, if she can’t turn into that, she can always settle for being a walking “quirk monster” as we then segue into a Lascaux-esque cave where Polachek proceeds to make shadow puppets on the wall. Then, she’s walking through a room with pottery-filled shelves before we see liquid bursting out of her mouth against the backdrop of a volcano also exploding. Meta indeed.

    More moments displaying the whimsical and weird ensue when Polachek proceeds to dance on a tabletop decorated with candelabra, followed by her appearance amid a sea of sperm. Something Circe herself could likely relate to, what with constantly being up to her neck in dick. And all from the comfort of her own island, Aeaea.

    Another close-up shot on Polachek’s face (complete with the aforementioned oversized black bow in her hair) emphasizes the importance of her saying, “I am my father’s daughter in the end.” If speaking from Circe’s perspective, that would be Helios. Who, according to Polachek, told Circe, “Watch your ego, watch your head, girl/You’re so smart, so talented/But now the water’s turning red/And it’s all your fault and it’s all your mess/And you’re all alone and can’t go to bed/Too high on your adrenaline.” And residual horniness from all that time spent with easy access to Odysseus, ultimately gone forever because she was foolish enough to adhere to the adage, “If you love someone, set them free.” Though he was “kind” enough to leave her with some sons, including Latinus and Telegonus. But obviously, Circe’s ego being what it is, that’s hardly a consolation. Thus, Polachek, in the paternal tone of the song’s bridge, continues with some more tough love via the advice, “Forget the rules, forget your friends/Just you and your reflection/‘Cause nothing’s gonna be the same again/No, nothing’s gonna be the same again.” How very Harry Styles saying, “You know it’s not the same as it was” in reference to post-pandemic existence.

    And it clearly never will be the same again for Polachek after running along the beach of this island in question as she holds the “hand” of some creature with a hoof. The only point of view we see is from the hoofed being’s, whose “arm” is guided by Polachek through the sand as they frolic and cavort in a way that Dionysus surely would approve of. The video concludes with a contrasting image of normalcy (which was the same way it started): Polachek waiting to get on a subway. The mythological-in-its-own-right L.A. subway. So, in that sense, Polachek never ceases with the motif of myth throughout this particular song and video. And maybe even Circe would deign to ride the subway in Los Angeles if it meant securing some fresh “pork” for her deserted island.
