    There’s nothing heroic about the final box office performance of “The Marvels.” The superhero sequel is officially the lowest-grossing installment in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    After four weeks on the big screen, the comic book tentpole is running out of steam with $80 million in North America and $197 million globally. There would typically be optimism that attendance could rebound over the busy holiday season, but Disney apparently doesn’t expect that to be the case. The studio wrote on Sunday in a note to press, “With ‘The Marvels’ box office now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title.”

    The film isn’t leaving theaters just yet, and the $220 million-plus budgeted tentpole is expected to play through New Year’s. However, this memo signals that it’s not expected to generate notable coinage during the rest of December. Over the weekend, “The Marvels” tumbled to 11th place on box office charts with just $2.4 million in its fourth outing.

    “The Marvels” opened on Nov. 10 with $46 million domestically to land the worst debut in the MCU, the franchise’s rare misfire out of the gate. Things only got gloomier. Ticket sales cratered by 78% in its sophomore outing to cement another ignominious record: the biggest second-weekend drop of the series. Now, as the film nears the end of its theatrical run, box office revenues won’t top 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” ($264 million, not adjusted for inflation), which previously stood as the lowest-grossing entry.

    This degree of disappointment is unusual because Marvel is the most commercially successful film franchise of all time, with $29.8 billion globally across 33 films. Moreover, the passionate MCU fanbase has turned out for less-embraced entries. This February’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Qunatumania” managed to generate $214 million domestically and $476 million worldwide even though the film was saddled with worse reviews than “The Marvels.”

    Directed by Nia DaCosta, the action-adventure spotlights a trio of Spandexed heroes — Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel — who are tasked with saving the universe from forces that seek to destroy it. Reviews were mixed, but a bigger problem is that “The Marvels” ended up bearing the brunt of the audience’s burnout toward this ever-expanding franchise, one that spans the big and small screen. This year alone, Marvel has released two other movies and three Disney+ TV series.

    “The Marvels” is also the first Marvel film to not cross the $100 million mark at the domestic box office. This means the sequel’s entire big screen run didn’t come close to matching the opening weekend of its predecessor, 2019’s “Captain Marvel” ($153 million). However, the original adventure with Larson’s Carol Danvers had extra momentum because of its prime release date between two of the biggest movies of all time, 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

    Disney’s CEO Bob Iger has addressed the film’s poor theatrical performance, suggesting that pandemic-related production restrictions ended up plaguing the final result. “‘The Marvels’ was shot during COVID,” Iger recently said. “There wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.”

    He added that the studio’s prior streak of billion-dollar behemoths has thrown off expectations about the potential of its movies. “We got to the point where if a film didn’t do a billion dollars in global box office, we were disappointed,” Iger said. “That’s an unbelievably high standard, and I think we have to get more realistic.”

    Box office analysts do not believe that superhero fatigue has once and for all plagued the masses. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($845 million) was a hit over the summer, and “Deadpool 3,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, is expected to be a smash in 2024. But “The Marvels” is the clearest indication that comic book fans will no longer reliably show up to theaters just because the Marvel logo appears in front of a movie.

    Disney still has several MCU movies on the horizon, but it may have to retool the future of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The studio recently postponed “Captain America: A Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts” and “Blade” to 2025 because of strike-related production delays. That leaves “Deadpool 3” as the lone Marvel movie on next year’s calendar. Hopefully, the Merc with a Mouth can save the day — and the MCU.

    Local crime thriller Across the Furious Sea, directed and co-written by Cao Baoping, dominated China’s box office over the weekend with a $24.7 million two-day opening kicking off on Saturday. The film’s strong start continues a recent market trend of Chinese moviegoers favoring well-told local crime stories. 

    But it was another weekend of struggle for Hollywood filmmaking in China. Disney Animation’s Wish opened in fifth place with only $3.5 million in ticket revenue, according to data from Artisan Gateway. Lionsgate’s prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, meanwhile, plummeted in its second frame, earning a little under $1 million. Disney’s The Marvels likewise continued its decline, slipping off of China’s top ten list for the weekend (the film’s total sits at $16 million and it is unlikely to earn much more — making for an all-time low for an MCU tentpole). 

    Across the Furious Sea marks a long-coming culmination for Cao, who is highly esteemed in China but whose films are somewhat less traveled than other major directors of his generation. He has said he views Across the Furious Sea as the final film in a loose trilogy of crime thrillers. Unfortunately, the middle installment in this saga has been seen by almost no one.

    Cao’s series got off to a strong start in 2015 with The Dead End, a crime drama starring Deng Chao that earned a healthy $47.6 million. His follow-up The Perfect Blue (aka She Kills) wrapped shooting in May 2018 but then ran into serious trouble when its co-star, Fan Bingbing, was detained by Chinese authorities in a major tax evasion scandal. Fan was eventually fined tens of millions of dollars and slapped with a de facto ban from appearing in mainland Chinese films and TV series. The Perfect Blue was a collateral industry casualty — the film never saw release in mainland China despite abundant curiosity and good buzz about its quality.

    Cao finished shooting Across the Furious Sea in 2020, but the film took far longer than usual to find its way to theaters. China’s lengthy lockdowns during the pandemic were one factor, but some Chinese fans also speculated that the movie’s producers were probably hoping to gain permission to release The Perfect Blue prior. 

    Based on a Chinese crime novel of the same name, Across the Furious Sea is a murder mystery that centers on a father (Huang Bo) who vows revenge when his daughter is murdered while studying abroad in Japan. The story is complicated by the victim’s boyfriend and biggest suspect, who has escaped persecution by returning to China with the help of his mother (Zhou Xun). The has garnered strong social scores and Maoyan projects it to earn over $80 million.

    Lionsgate’s prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes opened to $44 million at the domestic box office, easily enough to win the weekend but coming in behind expectations. The event pic has plenty of time to make up ground over Thanksgiving week, one of the most lucrative corridors of the year at the box office.

    Heading into the frame, tracking suggested the movie would devour at least $50 million in ticket sales as Lionsgate goes about the difficult task of trying to create a spinoff franchise. The studio remained hopeful on Saturday morning that the pic would come in on the higher end of the $45 million to $50 million range, but traffic slipped more than expected on Saturday.

    Overseas, the fifth title in the Hunger Games series started off with $54.5 million from 87 markets for a global opening of $98.5 million (foreign distributors financed much of the film when snapping up rights to their particular territories).

    The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes opens eight years after the last Hunger Games played in theaters and 12 years after the first film hit the big screen. The new movie earned a B+ CinemaScore, the lowest of the franchise. Female moviegoers made up the majority of Friday’s audience — or 64 percent.

    The four Hunger Games films, based on Suzanne Collins’ dystopian YA novels, starred Jennifer Lawrence and all opened north of $100 million domestically on their way to raking in $2.9 billion at the global box office.

    The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is based on Collins’ book of the same name. Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth lead the cast of the prequel, which also stars Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman and Viola Davis. Francis Lawrence, who helmed three previous Hunger Games movies, returns in the director’s chair.

    The dystopian action adventure kicked off the Thanksgiving box office alongside Universal and DreamWorks’ Trolls Band Together and TriStar and Spyglass Media Group’s slasher pic Thanksgiving, directed by Eli Roth.

    Trolls Band Together came in second with $30.6 million, in line with expectations and more than enough for a second-place finish. The family pic may have put off critics, but audiences bestowed it with an A CinemaScore. Trolls Band Together has already opened in a number of markets overseas, where it is expected to finish Sunday with a foreign tally of $76.3 million and $108.1 million globally.

    The threequel returns Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake to the roles of Poppy and Branch, who are now officially a couple. The movie was shepherded by returning director Walt Dohrn and producer Gina Shay. Similar to the Hunger Games prequel, the film is skewing female (69 percent of the audience for the movie in theaters).

    The outlook remained bleak for superhero pic The Marvels, which fell 78 percent in its second outing to rank as Marvel Studios’ worst second-weekend drop of all time, as well as the worst for any Hollywood superhero pic in modern history. Among Marvel Cinematic Universe titles, threequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania previously sported the worst drop of 69 percent.

    The Marvels earned an estimated $10.2 million for the weekend to tie with Thanksgiving. The final order will be determined Monday morning.

    Overseas, the superhero tentpole took in another $19.5 million from 52 markets for a tepid foreign tally of $96.3 million and $161.3 million globally.

    Roth’s latest horror offering earned a B- CinemaScore and skewed male (56 percent). Overseas, Thanksgiving earned $2.4 million from its first 11 markets for a global start of $12.6 million.

    At the specialty box office, Oscar hopeful Saltburn opened in seven locations. The MGM and Amazon film scored a promising per-theater average of $45,100. Overseas, where Warner Bros. International is handling the British black comedy, Saltburn opened to $1.6 million from handful of markets, including $1.3 million in the U.K., where it is set.

    And back in the top 10, awards contender The Holdovers (Focus Features) moved up the chart to No. 6 as it expanded nationwide, earning $2.7 million from 1,478 cinemas for an early domestic total of $8.4 million.

    Searchlight’s specialty film Next Goal Wins (Searchlight) came in No. 7 with an opening of $2.5 million from 2,240 theaters.

    On Nov. 22, a Wednesday, Apple Original Films and Sony’s Napoleon and Disney Animation’s Wish take a seat at the Thanksgiving holiday table, among other offerings.

    The Marvels‘ disappointing start at the North American box office over the weekend — $47 million, a record low for a Marvel Studios release — is adding to analysts’ concerns that superhero fatigue is an urgent and growing problem for the major studios. But in China, filmgoers have been snubbing America’s caped crusaders for far longer — and The Marvels only marks a fresh low.

    The Marvels opened to just $11.5 million in China, losing the three-day weekend to holdover local crime thriller Who’s the Suspect, which earned $11.7 million. Including Thursday night previews, The Marvels‘ four-day total creeps up to $11.8 million, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.

    MCU releases have been underperforming in China since the pandemic, but The Marvels‘ face plant is particularly striking. Back in 2019, Brie Larson’s franchise starter Captain Marvel opened to $89.3 million on its way to a strong $154 million China total. According to current projections, The Marvels will be lucky to top $20 million.

    Marvel’s other 2023 releases have also failed to find much traction with mainland Chinese moviegoers. Even James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — which was a success in North America with a $359 million haul — earned just $27.8 million in China, compared to $48.5 million for Guardians 2 (2017) and $86 million for Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania brought in $39.4 million in China this February, a 67 percent drop from Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s $121 million total in 2018. MCU releases from 2020 to 2022 were significantly affected by pandemic-related delays and cinema closures in China, but social scores on the country’s top ticketing apps throughout this period also began to decline.

    U.S. studio franchises across the board have been on the wane in China, but other action genres have held up somewhat better than superhero films. Universal’s Fast X holds the crown for Hollywood’s biggest film of 2023 in the country with a $51.1 million opening and $140 million total. And Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opened to $40 million and topped out at $92 million. Early installments in both film series earned vastly more in China, though, indicating broad franchise erosion for the studios.

    As elsewhere, the standouts in the China market this year have been the Barbenheimer originals. Oppenheimer earned $62 million, Christopher Nolan’s second-best China performance to date behind Interstellar ($122 million) — and a phenomenal showing for a lengthy English-language historical drama in the country. Warner Bros.’ Barbie, meanwhile, opened soft with $8.1 million amid a widespread lack of awareness in the market, but word of mouth among cosmopolitan Chinese women lifted it to a healthy $35.2 million total — despite the fact that Barbie dolls have almost no history or nostalgia in the country.

    Who’s The Suspect (aka Last Suspect), China’s weekend winner, opened a week ago with $23.4 million, including previews. The film is directed by Zhang Mo, daughter of Chinese film legend Zhang Yimou. Produced by Beijing Dino Films, the thriller stars actress Zhang Xiaofei as a lawyer who is forced to defend a death-row suspect after her own daughter is kidnapped. Chinese ticketing app Maoyan currently projects the film to finish its run with about $71 million (RMB 515 million).

    The next U.S. film to hit Chinese screens will be Lionsgate’s prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which opens day-and-date with North America on Friday.

An X-Men fan favorite made their MCU debut in the superhero film featuring girl-boss trio Captain Marvel, Captain Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel. Who plays Beast in The Marvels? We have the answer below.

    In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel regains her identity from the tyrannical Kree and seeks vengeance against the Supreme Intelligence. However, unforeseen consequences force Carol to bear the weight of a universe in turmoil. She’s sent to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, and her powers become entangled with Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel) and Carol’s estranged niece, S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau.

    In the film’s finale, Monica Rambeau gets separated from Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel through a wormhole into another universe. This leads to the first and only post-credit scene in The Marvels. Rambeau wakes up in what seems to be a hospital. Upon glancing around, she spots an individual who bears a striking resemblance to Maria Rambeau, her deceased mother from another universe, but Monica fails to recognize her.

    She hears the voice of a man and looks up to discover that she is under the watchful observation of Dr. Hank McCoy’s Beast from the X-Men. After Monica comes across Beast, she realizes she’s trapped in a parallel timeline and has to figure out a way to get home. The theme music from X2 (2003) plays in the background as the scene ends. Dun dun dun.

    Who plays Beast in The Marvels? Kelsey Grammer plays X-Men’s Dr. Hank McCoy (aka Beast) in The Marvels. Grammer also portrayed the original Beast in Fox’s X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 and made a brief cameo in 2014’s Days of Future Past.

    Beast’s appearance is one of a few nods to the popular Fox trilogy in recent years. In Disney+’s Ms. Marvel series, when Kamala’s friend Bruno discovers she has a mutation in her DNA, the instantly recognizable riff to the 90s X-Men: The Animated Series played. The same riff was heard when Patrick Stewart’s Prof. Charles Xavier appeared in last year’s film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

    Grammer previously said that he wanted to play iconic X-Men character again in the future. In 2022, the 68-year-old actor joked with MovieWeb that he’d boycott Disneyland if they didn’t allow him to reprise his role. “If they don’t ask me to return to the role of Beast, I’ll never go to Disneyland again. I’d love for them to do that. I want to do that,” he said.

    The surprise cameo comes as fans have been pushing for X-Men to officially join the MCU following the Disney-Fox acquisition in 2019. Ahead of The Marvels premiere, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased that the mutants might be on their way “soon.”

    “The X-Men are as solid and as rich and as a great a concept in characters as exist,” Feige said in a red carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight. “There’s the return of the animated series next year, which we’re very excited about. I saw some new final episodes today, which really bring you back to that core of who the X-Men are and that soap opera that those characters represent.” He continued: “And then in live-action, people will see… perhaps soon.”

    In the meantime, Hugh Jackman is set to reprise his role as Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3. There’s also good chance we’ll see Beast again in Deadpool 3 or Avengers: Secret Wars, so there’s a lot to look forward to.

    The Marvels is now playing in theaters.

    Let’s face it: The Marvels is a lot of fun, but it has some plot problems. The film has a lot of elements that feel shoehorned in so that Marvel Studios can connect it to the other films and series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is one extraneous scene, though, that I’m thrilled the studio included.

    Why? Because it means one fan-favorite relationship may have just become canon.

    Minor spoilers for The Marvels ahead!

    Valkyrie’s cameo in The Marvels, explained

    In the final trailer for The Marvels, we see Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), friend of Thor and King of New Asgard, giving Carol (Brie Larson) an inspiration speech. Fun! But Val’s cameo in the film is even better than the trailer lets on.

    After Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) destroys a colony of Skrull refugees, Carol calls a friend whom she think may be able to take the survivors in. Soon, the Bifrost appears, and Valkyrie shows up. Significantly, Val is dressed in a well-tailored suit and tie instead of armor, meaning that she’s visiting in her capacity as King, not warrior. Val has arrived to take the Skrulls back to New Asgard.

    Val congratulates Carol on finding a team, mentioning her own time as a member of the short-lived Revengers in Thor: Ragnarok. “You can stand tall without standing alone,” she says. Before she leaves, she takes Carol’s hands and kisses her on the cheek.

    That moment isn’t just a friendly gesture. There’s definitely something special between Val and Carol.

    The moment isn’t completely unexpected. In fact, fans have been shipping Val and Carol for years. Some fan art even caught the attention of Larson and Thompson, who loved the idea of Val and Carol being an item.

    So are Carol Danvers and Valkyrie dating, or what?

    I mean, what do you mean by “dating?” Like, are Carol and Val a monogamous couple that sees each other all the time? I don’t see how that could be, what with Carol spending most of her time in space. However, with Valkyrie apparently having access to the Bifrost at least some of the time, I suppose they could visit each other.

    The way I personally read the scene—and you can disagree!—is that they’re not exclusive at the moment, but they had a relationship in the past. They seem like they haven’t seen each other in awhile, especially with Valkyrie’s wish at the end that “the next time we meet be joyful.” (There’s also the depressing matter of Disney’s allergy to outright queer relationships, which may have influenced what eventually made it onto the screen.)

    When might Carol and Val have dated? In The Marvels, we learn that Carol visited Earth at least once during the Blip, while Monica was gone and Maria was dying of cancer. It’s possible that when Carol came to Earth, and after Valkyrie brought the Asgardian refugees to Norway to start their new colony, the two of them met and developed a relationship. That’s just one possibility, though.

    A relationship with Valkyrie adds some pathos to Carol’s story, since Monica spends most of the movie believing that Carol took off from Earth and didn’t look back. It also adds a new dimension to Val’s character, since we know from Thor: Love and Thunder that Val is still mourning the loss of the fellow Valkyrie she loved long ago. Exploring a relationship with Carol while still feeling that grief is a lovely, bittersweet development for Val.

    Congrats, Captain Marvel and Valkyrie fans: The Marvels may not be the masterpiece we were hoping for, but at least we’re winning in other ways.

    The Marvels, the latest big-screen spectacle from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is out in theatres today. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film features Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris, Samuel L. Jackson and a much-talked-about Park Seo-joon cameo. The cosmic adventure is positioned as a fast-paced superheroine team-up. While it isn’t a head-scratcher when compared to recent titles dealing with the multiverse, the film is tasked with setting up more than one plot line within the messy web that is the MCU. That is a tall order for one movie amidst many, not to forget the Marvel TV shows. So if you find yourself struggling to keep up as the film heads “faster, higher and stronger” into the next phase, here’s a quick run-through of everything that went down during the film’s 1 hour 45 mins runtime.

    What happens during the ending of The Marvels?

    The Marvels opens with a puzzling phenomenon. Three superheroes – Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau, find themselves entangled in each other’s lives. After Monica comes in contact with a jump gate in space, they end up rapidly switching places whenever they use their light-based powers. They must band together to get to the bottom of this. Meanwhile, Nick Fury provides assistance from his space station S.A.B.E.R. Through the course of the movie, we find out that Carol goes by another name – the Annihilator. On a mission to save the Kree from an AI called the Supreme Intelligence, Carol ends up leaving their planet Hala in ruins. While Carol feels guilty, Dar-Benn who witnessed the devastation stumbles upon a lost Quantum Band (the other pair is the bangle that is passed on to Kamala Khan). She begins to use it to gain resources for a home planet. She does this by punching a hole in space and time and extracting the water, the sun etc. And she picks the target planets that have a connection with Captain Marvel. Towards the end of the movie, Dar-Benn decides to get the Earth’s sun. Her attempt ends up creating a hole in another universe. To patch the hole, Monica comes up with a plan that involves Carol and Kamala combining their powers, generating enough energy for her to fix the hole. The science of this plan isn’t exactly laid out for the viewers but it looks like it is a success. But there is a catch. While they’re able to save the Kree’s home, Monica seems to be lost. And, she knew the risks but was mentally prepared for the sacrifice. Carol and Kamala return home to Earth along with Nick Fury and the folks on S.A.B.E.R who are transported through Flerkens. Make of that what you will.

    The Marvels ending

    Where is Monica Rambeau?

    The answer to that question is in the mid-credits scene of The Marvels. Monica wakes up with a start in a hospital-like setting with IV tubes on her arm. At her bedside, she finds a woman who looks exactly like Maria Rambeau. Startled, she instinctively calls her “mom” with tears in her eyes while the woman looks confused. We then see X-Men’s Beast (voiced by Kelsey Grammar). He explains that Monica has travelled to space and time and reached a parallel reality where Maria is the hero Binary. We see her in full superhero costume. The realisation hits Monica who must contend with the new reality she is placed in. This confirms the long-speculated link between the MCU and the X-Men. Finally! Back on Earth, Carol and Kamala are heartbroken but remain hopeful about Maria’s return.

    Is Kamala Khan assembling the Young Avengers?

    The Marvels opens at the close of the series Ms. Marvel where Carol Danvers finds herself transported to Kamala’s home in New Jersey. The end of the film looks like a full-circle moment for Kamala’s arc as she takes her next steps as a superhero. She seems to be taking a leaf out of Nick Fury’s book as she sets out to do some recruiting. In the end-credits scene of the MCU film, Kamala is seated in a dark room in New York City. When the lights come on, we see Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop. Kamala uses Fury’s line “Did you think you were the only kid superhero in the world?” She tells Kate that she has a file on her referring to S.A.B.E.R’s tablet with intel. She then goes on the say that she is about to become a part of a “larger universe” and that she’s putting together a team. She also mentions Ant-Man’s daughter. After hilariously taking a pause, she quips, “Please?” The end-credits scene of The Marvels alludes to the Young Avengers coming together. The MCU’s phase 4 has introduced quite a few young superheroes including America Chavez who made an appearance in Doctor Strange 2, Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie Lang and Wanda’s twin sons Billy and Tommy. These characters feature in the Young Avengers team-up that made a first appearance in a 2005 comic book run. Alternatively, Ms. Marvel could also be setting up the Champions.

    What does the ending mean for the MCU?

    The Marvels has a largely satisfying ending with the lead characters showing personal growth while the plot establishes upcoming adventures. Carol seems to have changed her space-hopping ways and finally settles down in Louisiana where Kamala’s family – Muneeba, Yusuf and Aamir help her move into Maria and Monica’s old home. It seems like Kamala and Carol have become close friends. It is also important to note that Kamala has both bangles by the end of the film. It also looks like Nick Fury and his S.A.B.E.R. crew comprising humans and aliens wind up staying on Earth. It is safe to assume that all the key characters in the film will go on to make waves in upcoming films and TV shows.

    The Marvels Plot

    As Kree, a faraway civilization undergoes leadership changes, the new Supremo decides to take revenge against Captain Marvel who they seem to be blaming for their nightfall. Carol Danvers, meanwhile, is working away when she learns of an anomaly in space and tries to solve it on her own, unknowingly building a connection between all the “Marvels”. She transports places with a teenager, who happens to be none other than the amateur superhero, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and then with Monica Rambeau, the kid she left behind years ago. 

    All hell breaks loose as Dar-Benn charges upon multiple spatial locations to take down what’s dear to Captain Marvel and, in the meantime, hunts for the other bangle that would allow her the maximum strength to build her planet a new sun. Only, the bangle is on earth, firmly placed on the arm of an unaware Kamala Khan. This now ensues a confusing, spot-changing, spatial battle to convince Dar-Benn and save Earth’s sun.

    The Goods

    The cinematics. Marvel Studios had been known for bringing comics to life and taking them beyond with its magic. The recent few years have shouldered the brunt of the audience with arguably bad editing and visual effects, it seems that The Marvels took its time to become worthy of the legacy left behind. 

    The unexpected comic relief that was once enjoyed by fans of earlier MCU seems to have returned. It’s not in-your-face and even slightly questionable like in Deadpool and neither is it flat falling like in the past couple of films. The humor is spread out and light, not needing a lot to engage the viewers, which may after all work in its favor. 

    The Bads

    The highly anticipated Marvel Studios creation, led by Captain Marvel’s story, breaks into havoc quite early on. As multiple teleportations happen all at once, the action scenes are scarce, breaking flow every too often. At times, it even seems that there are too many superheroes with only one not-so-evil villain, diminishing the power of the revenge story. 

    Park Seo Joon’s role- or lack thereof- may just become a major downfall for fans of the star who probably went in expecting more than one verse of singing and short-handed dialogues that ended without climatic glory for Prince Yan. His cameo came off as more of an incomplete storyline. Towards the end of the movie, there are so many things in so many places breaking into each other that you almost want them to take a breather.

    Acting Performances in The Marvels

    Brie Larson does not take it upon herself to pull the weight of the film and it shows. She appears almost nonchalant in some scenes which one would not expect from the lead cast. Teyonah Parris, on the other hand, goes in too deep too soon with emotive eyes and flashy moves that don’t make up for her contribution to the creation. Iman Vellani is indifferent to her webseries portrayal and that’s about it from her as she continues to fan over Captain Marvel.

    Samuel L. Jackson has to be our pick for the best acting, thanks to his reigning command over the role of Nick Fury, and we best leave talk about Park Seo Joon’s role to a minimum.

    Final Review: The Marvels

    The Marvels is not for die-hard fans of the comic books. For MCU fans, it may be different to watch the movie with context and they may perceive it as an improvement from the last few attempts of the Studios. For unaware viewers, it’s a weekend runner that comes full circle and leaves not much to the imagination, making for an acceptable watch.

    For years, Disney ruled the roost at the global box office, shattering one industry record after another. Now the company’s film empire is under pressure to rebound from a rough streak.

    Disney chief Bob Iger didn’t mince words when asked about the losing streak during Wednesday’s earnings call, although he did first have to remind investors that it hasn’t been all bad news, noting that four of the top 10 films in the past year came from the company, including Avatar: The Way of Water.

    “That said, as I looked at our overall output, meaning the studio, it’s clear that the pandemic created a lot of challenges creatively for everybody, including for us,” the media mogul said. “In addition, at the time the pandemic hit, we were leaning into a huge increase in how much we were making and I’ve always felt that quantity can be actually a negative when it comes to quality. And I think that’s exactly what happened. We lost some focus.”

    Iger was seemingly taking a swipe at his short-lived predecessor, Bob Chapek, for ramping up content production across TV and film. Historically, including for most of the time Iger was CEO the first go-around, the company’s film operation released far fewer titles than its rivals.

    Meanwhile, Disney’s performance at the box office is sure to be in the spotlight once again this weekend as The Marvels hits the big screen. If tracking is correct, the superhero pic could mark one of the worst openings ever for Marvel Studios.

    Iger — who didn’t mention The Marvels — said the task now is to focus on quality, and not quantity.

    “We’re all rolling up our sleeves, including myself, to do just that. We have obviously great assets, great stories to tell from the assets that we either have or that we purchased. And I feel really optimistic about the slate going forward, which is going to be a balance between some really strong sequels to some very, very popular titles, as well as some good original content, starting with Wish, which comes out Thanksgiving weekend,” he continued. “So I feel good about the direction we’re headed. But I’m mindful of the fact that our performance from a quality perspective wasn’t really up to the standards that we set for ourselves.”

    Recent high-profile misses for Disney include Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and The Haunted Mansion. And its animation studios hit troubled times in the pandemic era when several Pixar titles were sent straight to streaming in a move that critics say conditioned families to stay home, versus making a trip to the cinema.

    Marvel has finally unveiled its latest tentpole, “The Marvels,” and film journalists are calling the Nia DaCosta-directed tentpole a “short and sweet,” “astonishingly wacky” film that’s “full of girl power.”

    Although many have been hesitant about the superhero movie’s potential, with a few already predicting “The Marvels” as a box office bomb — a surprising number of positive reactions poured in on social media Tuesday night. Washington Post reporter Herb Scribner described the film as “exactly what a comic book movie should be,” while “Deep Dive” host Erik Voss called it “astonishingly wacky.”

    “It’s funny, silly, short and sweet, action-packed. Loved the cosmic sci-fi moments,” Scribner wrote on X/Twitter. “Plenty of MCU interconnectivity without being overbearing.”

    “The Marvels” features the return of Brie Larson‘s Captain Marvel, whose 2019 standalone movie grossed $1.1 billion. “The Marvels” not only serves as a sequel to “Captain Marvel” but also to the Disney+ series “WandaVision,” “Ms. Marvel” and “Secret Invasion.” Larson’s Carol Danvers is forced to team up with Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) after they begin swapping places when they use their light-based powers. The trio link up with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to stop a Kree warrior hellbent on finding a new home for her people.

    “It’s hilarious, action-packed & full of girl power” Pop Culture Planet founder Kristen Maldonado wrote on X. “There was a great balance of the team, while dropping shocking bombs that will change EVERYTHING.”

    “The Marvels” arrives amid a shaky year for the comic book movie genre. Marvel’s own “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and DC’s “The Flash” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” all flopped at the box office. The James Gunn-directed “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($845 million worldwide) was a success for Marvel, but “superhero fatigue” appears quite real at the moment.

    “I think superhero fatigue absolutely exists,” DaCosta recently told Total Film magazine. “The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that [‘The Marvels’ is] really wacky, and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”

    Some were a bit more critical about “The Marvels,” with Collider’s Nate Richard saying that “the story is a huge mess with an underutilized villain and an underwhelming finale.” Andrew J. Salazar from DiscussingFilms said the MCU feature “feels like it lost its battle in the editing room,” adding that “scenes don’t flow into each other [and] you can’t tell when the first act or second act begins.”

    All in all, however, there appears to be a glimpse of hope for “The Marvels,” as most critics praised the 105-minute runtime, DaCosta’s direction and the chemistry between the three female leads.

    “Female Avengers team-up movie packs in chuckles, cats, hairballs, and musical sequences. Much more episodic than a cinematic endeavor, but I think that’s its greatest strength,” Variety‘s senior awards editor Clayton Davis wrote. “Great post-credits. Loved my leading lady trio. Great visual effects.”

    “‘The Marvels’ is a good time at the movies. Definitely not everything works, and there are two cringe-inducing sequences that threaten to derail the whole thing,” wrote Clarence Moye, film and TV editor at Awards Daily. “BUT DeCosta can direct action sequences, it’s never boring, and the leads are all very good.”

    “‘The Avengers’ movies are these epic conclusions to chapters of storytelling, whereas this is a team-up within the narrative that we didn’t necessarily expect for Marvel,” producer Mary Livanos added about what makes “The Marvels” stand out. “Usually, you wait for characters to show up all together in ‘Avengers’ movies. We were excited to design a team-up featuring characters that women from all walks of life could relate to.”

    Audiences have finally gotten their first look at The Marvels, the latest project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    The Marvel Studios film held its premiere in Las Vegas Tuesday, with press screenings also held in New York and Los Angeles. Now, first reactions are arriving on social media, ahead of formal reviews, which hit on Wednesday morning.

    Brie Larson, Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani and WandaVision‘s Teyonah Parris star in The Marvels, which hails from Candyman filmmaker Nia DaCosta and arrives in theaters on Friday. It is a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, which raked in $1.128 billion globally. But The Marvels opens amid a very different landscape, and doesn’t have nearly as lofty box office hopes.

    The film did not have its actors available to promote the film amid the SAG-AFTRA strike, and Captain Marvel benefited from tying directly to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which helped build excitement. Marvel switched gears in its marketing of the movie on Monday, releasing a last-minute trailer that reminded audiences of Captain Marvel’s ties to the Avengers, and featuring archival footage of Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evan and Josh Brolin.

    For those who are not attending tonight’s The Marvels premiere in Las Vegas, Goose — the cat-like alien creature that appeared in Captain Marvel and returns in The Marvels — will tower over the city’s skyline on the exterior of the recently-opened Sphere.

    The promo is a collaboration between software developer Autodesk and Marvel, and begins with Goose in its cat form, before transforming with her detailed tentacles on full display. It comes ahead of The Marvels‘s Nov. 10 release in theaters.

    Sphere, Las Vegas’ newest entertainment venue, boasts an exterior coated with a record 580,000-square-foot 16K LED display, while its interior features a record 160,000 square-foot 16K LED display.

    The Autodesk/Marvel promo was created by visual effects studio The Mill, using Autodesk Maya 3D software (which is widely used by VFX companies) for designing, lighting, rigging and animating the Goose character. It was rendered with Autodesk’s Arnold software.

    “Collaborating with Autodesk on The Marvels activation has been an amazing experience,” says Jocelyn Birsch, director of experience at The Mill, which also created the visual collage, using sampled film clips of Elvis Presley, that plays during U2’s current residency at Sphere.

    Since opening in late September, Sphere debuted two shows: U2 residency U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere and Darren Aronofsky-helmed movie Postcard from Earth.

    The new promo is scheduled to run through Nov. 13, for the kickoff of Autodesk University, the software developer’s annual design and content creation customer confab, which will be held in Las Vegas.

    The release date of The Marvels is fast approaching, but with the Marvel Cinematic Universe mired in uncertainty, the film has been plagued by doubt and delays. Now, director Nia DaCosta has addressed criticism that she received for leaving the production early to work on another film.

    Jake Hamilton, interviewing DaCosta for his YouTube channel Jake’s Takes, asked about DaCosta’s supposedly controversial departure from the film. Earlier this month, Variety published an exposé on Marvel Studios, in which an unnamed source stated that “If you’re directing a $250 million movie, it’s kind of weird for the director to leave with a few months to go.”

    However, while interviewing DaCosta, Hamilton pointed out that it’s not unheard of for directors’ productions to overlap, citing Steven Spielberg leaving Jurassic Park early to start working on Schindler’s List.

    DaCosta’s response was enlightening.

    “For me, personally, it was literally just that [Marvel] moved [the release date of The Marvels] four different times, and so instead of being a two-year process, which I was deeply committed to, it became a three and a half year process …. They knew the entire time that I had an obligation, a green-lit movie with people who were waiting for me, and I pushed that, and I pushed it again, and then I pushed it again, and then eventually we all knew like, okay, if this gets pushed again, I’m not going to be able to be in L.A. to do the rest of this in person. So we just figured out a way to do it remote.”

    DaCosta also explained how she worked with the rest of the crew to finish the film. “We figured out the best process,” she said. “At the time that I left to go to London to start prep on my next film, everyone was so clear about what the film was that we wanted, everyone knew what I wanted, so it really wasn’t the dramatic sort of thing that people think it is.”

    DaCosta added that directors finishing one production while beginning another “happens quite a bit” in the film industry, despite the judgement coming from Marvel’s anonymous source.

    The Marvels opens in theaters this Friday, November 10.

    The young Ms. Marvel was hoping that the diverse roster would help people relate to the characters, despite their otherworldly powers.

    “Marvel has always championed that idea of finding this idealized version of yourself through their characters — a version of yourself that can fly in space or stop a train with one hand,” she explained. “I think that aspiration to be greater than who you are is such a universal feeling, regardless of gender identity. I hope people recognize that and find ways to identify with all of our characters.”

    Zawe Ashton, who plays the villainous Kree Dar-Benn, said she felt strong solidarity with the rest of the female cast carrying the film.

    “It’s this all-female sci-fi extravaganza, with a woman on the other side of the camera,” Ashton explained. “I felt very moved, actually, being involved in it. It’s not an environment you’re often in — a huge-budget movie with all these badass women and Samuel L. Jackson. That just doesn’t happen.

    Her co-star, Brie Larson, teased the humour in the upcoming female ensemble movie.

    “It doesn’t have to be intense and heavy,” Larson said. “There’s a lot of humour. I think this movie’s very funny, and we laughed a lot while making it.” In fact, the cast would play Uno together over pizza in her trailer.

    “The Marvels” flies into theatres on Nov. 10.

    Ironheart writer and The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer contributor Eve L. Ewing is back at Marvel and heading a new limited series entitled Monica Rambeau: Photon. Don’t get me wrong, the main cover for issue one (above) by Brazilian artist Lucas Werneck is absolutely stunning and set the bar very freaking high. Between him and Ewing, my order is in, okay. However, now I have to call my local comic book store and ask about holds on a variant or two because look at these!

    These artists include (top left, clockwise) Peach Momoko, Mateus Manhanini (the same artist behind this image), Brian Stelfreeze, and Karen Darboe. While playing on their own strengths as artists, each one of them balanced the cosmic elements with Rambeau’s New Orleans roots. Because there’s not much known about the story due to Photon’s less-than-stellar (to put it very likely) treatment in the comics, it’s hard to predict where this will go.

    However, with an overlap release with The Marvels near the end of the release, I’m hoping for an independent story that can more firmly establish Monica in Marvel comics for the long term. Especailly considering the mixed emotions I have about Monica and the other Marvels. Between Ewing’s handling of Champions (which I loved), Ms. Marvel, and Riri Williams, I believe she can do it.

    The first issue (a.k.a. all of these covers) of this limited series releases December 14, so put in your orders at your local comic shop to ensure there’s a copy ready for you to pick up this winter!
