  • Obama rips concessions that businesses and others have made to Trump

    [ad_1]

(CNN) — Barack Obama ripped into the law firms, universities and businesses that have worked out settlements or other deals with President Donald Trump’s administration, arguing that “We all have this capacity, I think, to take a stand.”

The former president said the organizations that concede to Trump should be able to say, “We’re not going to be bullied into saying that we can only hire people or promote people based on some criteria that’s been cooked up by Steve Miller,” referring to the top White House aide.

According to an advance podcast transcript, Obama said he sympathized with those looking to avoid a backlash, but said, “We’re not at the stage where you have to be like Nelson Mandela and be in a 10-by-12 jail cell for 27 years and break rocks.”

The comments, some of the most direct that Obama has made about Trump outside of his campaign trail appearances in 2020 and 2024, came in an interview posting Monday for the final episode of the “WTF” podcast hosted by comedian Marc Maron.

Maron, who last interviewed Obama in 2015, has frequently talked about that conversation in subsequent episodes. In July, after announcing he would end the 16-year run of the pioneering podcast, he suggested that another talk with Obama would be a dream way to finish. Last week, he got his wish — though not by having Obama make another visit to his house, as many of the podcast guests tend to.

Maron kept the interview a surprise even from fans, only teasing in his penultimate episode that he traveled to record it. They met in Obama’s office in Washington.

The conversation focused on the state of America and what Democrats can find hope in — but Obama also criticized progressive absolutism and singled out one rising Texas Democrat who impresses him.

The news out of his hometown on his mind, Obama called Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Chicago “a deliberate end run around not just a concept, but a law that’s been around for a long time” — the Posse Comitatus Act, which generally prohibits the use of the military inside the US for law enforcement purposes.

“That is a genuine effort to weaken how we have understood democracy,” he said.

Obama reflected on his own experiences in the White House, including dealing with pushback from Republican leaders such as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

“If I had sent in the National Guard into Texas and just said, ‘You know what? A lot of problems in Dallas, a lot of crime there, and I don’t care what Gov. Abbott says. I’m going to kind of take over law enforcement, because I think things are out of control,’ it is mind-boggling to me how Fox News would have responded,” he said.

The two also discussed the evolution of the media environment, particularly around the podcast world Maron helped shape, and what it has done to political communication.

“It was interesting to me when people started criticizing Bernie [Sanders] or somebody else for going on Rogan. It’s like, why wouldn’t you? Yeah, of course, go,” Obama said, referring to “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast.

Among the Rogan guests who caught Obama’s eye: Texas state Rep. James Talarico, who turned a viral appearance on the podcast into fuel for what has now become a competitive Senate primary run.

Obama called Talarico “terrific, a really talented young man,” adding that his appearance proves that going on long-form podcasts requires “a certain confidence in your actual convictions to debate and have a conversation with somebody who disagrees with you.”

Overall, Obama argued, “what people long for is some core integrity that seems absent, just a sense that the person seems to walk the walk, just talk the talk.”

Obama said he particularly enjoyed a bit from Maron’s latest stand-up special when the comedian jokes that progressives annoyed the average American into fascism.

“You can’t constantly lecture people without acknowledging that you’ve got some blind spots too, and that life’s messy,” Obama said. “I think this was a fault of some progressive language, was almost asserting a holier-than-thou superiority that’s not that different from what we used to joke about coming from the right moral majority and a certain fundamentalism about how to think about stuff that I think was dangerous.”

“If I talked about trans issues, I wasn’t talking down to people and saying, ‘Oh, you’re a bigot,’” he said. “I’d say, ‘You know, it’s tough enough being a teenager. Let’s treat all kids decently. Why would we want to see kids bullied?”

  • Joe Rogan casts doubt on Donald Trump’s mystery drone explanation

    [ad_1]

Podcaster Joe Rogan cast fresh doubts on Tuesday regarding President Donald Trump’s explanation for the mysterious drone flights over New Jersey and other states last year.

Newsweek contacted the White House for comment via email after office hours on Tuesday.

    Why It Matters

Officials at local and federal levels were baffled for weeks by reports of mystery drone sightings spotted in Northeast states like New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut, starting in November 2024.

Residents of Ohio, Florida, Massachusetts and California also reported seeing drones overhead, raising concerns about security threats and speculation of foreign involvement.

Federal officials repeatedly sought to calm public anxieties, affirming no evidence of foreign involvement or ill intent behind the sightings. Nevertheless, conspiracy theories ran rampant online and among lawmakers.

    What To Know

Before returning to the White House for his second term, Trump had demanded that the Biden administration explain the mystery drones. Days after his inauguration, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a brief statement from Trump saying the drones “were not the enemy” and “were authorized to be flown by the FAA for research and various other reasons.”

Rogan questioned that explanation. “I don’t know what that was, you know, because they were going to tell us, supposedly, and they kind of just didn’t,” he said on his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience

“You can’t discount the idea that they’re not telling you the truth but they might have been ours too, that‘s the problem. They might have been someone else’s. There’s a bunch of different possibilities, right, and all of them, they don’t have to be truthful about it. If it’s a national security issue, it would probably be better they weren’t truthful, because people would freak out.

“It’s also the potential that they are ours and they did them on purpose to see how people would respond, so that’s possible too.

“It’s also possible that they’re not ours and there’s someone else whose flexing on us, and they’re doing it in a way where, they’re showing you we have technological superiority, our stuff is way more advanced than yours, and if there would be a culprit in that regard, in my mind, it would be China,” Rogan said.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., told Newsweek in December that he was “not clear” on the issue involving the drones in the U.S. and near U.S. bases in Europe.

    What People Are Saying

Rogan, also on his podcast: “China is so ahead of the United States in drone technology.”

Trump, on Truth Social in December: “Mystery Drone Sightings all over the country. Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge. I don’t think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!! DJT.”

  • What’s Going On With The Cancelled Podcast Girls?

What’s Going On With The Cancelled Podcast Girls?

    [ad_1]

Tana Mongeau has been a household name in the YouTube community for over a decade now. Growing up, I’d spend hours watching her wild story-times detailing otherworldly scenarios. Although her stories were often NSFW, Tana continued to build a brand for herself: one that was riddled with scandal and clout.

She married Jake Paul on MTV in an admitted scheme to get more clout. She hosted a failed TanaCon that stranded fans, resulting in an apology video and a climb back to the good graces of the public. And her lore goes back years.

Now, Tana Mongeau is the face of
The Cancelled Podcast: the fourth most popular podcast in the United States behind heavy-hitters like The Tucker Carlson Show, The Joe Rogan Experience, and Alex Cooper’s
    Call Her Daddy.

The podcast itself is a massive success partially thanks to the honest discourse between co-hosts Brooke Schofield and the aforementioned Mongeau. The pair discuss current events in pop culture (often that they’re directly involved in), have regular guests like fellow social media icon, Trisha Paytas, or even singers like Jelly Roll and his wife, Bunny.

But what the duo is most famous for is their drama. They’re not afraid to expose ex-boyfriends and failed dates, they will detail harsh encounters with other girls in the social media influencing industry, and they won’t hold back on anything. Even if they’re being discreet, fans will decode their stories and find the redacted names on Reddit.

    Recently,
The Cancelled Podcast has soared into public eye beyond the norm. Sure, the podcast was always great…but now, they’re dripping with headlines for news sources everywhere. It starts with Brooke Schofield.

    Brooke Schofield Vs. Clinton Kane

@brookeschofield1♬ original sound – Brooke Schofield

You may have never heard of Clinton Kane either, but he’s a singer (allegedly) hailing from Australia. Brooke has offhandedly mentioned her relationship with Clinton Kane a few times over the course of the podcast…but only recently has she fully exposed him.

After Kane posted a TikTok admonishing Schofield for continuing to “yap” about him while he’s moved on, Schofield returned the fire with a fourteen part TikTok series on their relationship. In the series she titles “Who The F*** Did I Marry?”, she details how Clinton Kane actually isn’t from Australia, and that he had been faking the death of his mother for years, all while gaslighting Schofield into believing him.

Schofield claims Kane painted a childhood with a rich family, a Norwegian, blonde mother who doubled as a Hillsong (yes, that church) pastor. She also provides voice memos where Kane’s Australian accent ebbs and flows, sometimes just falling into an American accent. Another story she tells talks about how Kane got pulled over and the ID he gave the officer had a different birthdate on it than the one he had given her, to which he claimed was a fake ID.

The series sparked a social media whirlwind. Everyone had to know what the truth was…and as more and more women came out with similar stories about Kane, Schofield emerged a clear winner. However, the drama never ends there. Kane had to post his own rebuttal on the social media platform.

In a back-and-forth, he-said-she-said moment, Kane versus Schofield took place in front of the entire world. Publications like
Rolling Stonepicked up the story…like I said, national news.

    Tana Mongeau and Cody Ko

And even more recently, Tana Mongeau has been making headlines for her involvement with fellow YouTuber Cody Ko when she was a minor. While Schofield and Mongeau were touring their podcast, a clip went viral of Mongeau joking about how she slept with Ko when she was a minor.

    @self.detached Cancelled Podcast Tour Hot Seat Questions @Tana Mongeau @Brooke Schofield #cancelled #cancelledpodcast #liveshow #tanamongeau #codyko #brookeschofield ♬ original sound – 𝖈𝖗𝖞𝖇𝖆𝖇𝖞

Ko and Mongeau have made multiple YouTube videos together in the past throughout their careers. Both of them have seen immense success- Ko, from reaction videos and his podcast alongside Noel Miller, and of course Mongeau’s own successes. Alarm bells should have been raised years ago, and more concern should be shown about underage content creators who are coming up in the industry.

And for a while, everything continued as normal after that clip. That was until YouTuber D’Angelo Wallace released a video titled “An uncomfortable conversation about Cody Ko.” this month. Then, everyone started finally speaking up in defense of Mongeau.

It begs an interesting question: why did it take Wallace’s video for us to condemn Cody Ko? Why does everyone suddenly care
now when this has been a generally open problem for years?

While both issues have been addressed on
The Cancelled Podcast, the public has been obsessed with Schofield and Mongeau’s life. With their wholehearted honesty and raw discussions about their lives, their drama, and everything in between, this won’t be the end of them.

  • Your 2023 Spotify Wrapped Is Ready

Your 2023 Spotify Wrapped Is Ready

    [ad_1]

Every year around December, excitement grows for reasons other than the holiday season. Yes, we all come together to celebrate the release of our
Spotify Wrapped– and what a glorious, joyous time it is for many. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to expose which type of person you are: an Apple Music user or a Spotify user.

Spotify Wrapped can teach you a lot about yourself and others. It reveals the top artists, albums, and songs both globally and in the United States, as well as your own individualized playlist filled with your top songs of the year. Mine, unsurprisingly is
Noah Kahan (and he occupies four of my five top songs).

It can remind you of songs you swore you only listened to once, and exposes you for the kind of listener you truly are. Somehow, One Direction was my top artist for years beyond their indefinite hiatus…some people never change!

    At the
Spotify Wrapped 2023 event yesterday, we got the chance to answer all of your questions for this year’s Wrapped! Let’s dive in.

When Can I See My Spotify Wrapped 2023?

In one of the greatest rivalries of all time, Apple Music released their Wrapped dupe called Replay a day earlier than Spotify…but today, November 29, is when your
2023 Spotify Wrapped graces the app.

What’s New To Spotify Wrapped This Year?

This year’s theme was “Wrapped, Or It Didn’t Happen.” In a world of
AI, Spotify wanted to celebrate what’s real: embracing the real moments you experience through music. They wanted to encapsulate the year we’ve had as listeners, so we can appreciate the different cultures and sounds that have been brought to us.

You’ll see more moving parts during the campaign, with bolder colors, bigger digital productions across the world. But there’s more to your Wrapped than just a special playlist based on your listening data. For the first time, you’ll be able to view it on your computer as well.

One of the newest feature is Me, In 2023, where you’re assigned one of twelve listening personalities to tell you a bit more about yourself. For example, I’m an Alchemist, which means I create more playlists and listen to them more than the average user. This, obviously, is not shocking as I curate a
    Weekend Playlist for this website.

There’s also SoundTown, which matches you to a city where you’ll likely meet people who have similar music taste to you. The excitement doesn’t stop there, you’ll be able to see which month you listened to your Top 5 Artists the most and use the Blend feature to see how you and your friends match up.
