  • An indie studio says it’s at risk of closure after Valve banned its game from Steam

Indie studio Santa Ragione said it is at risk of shutting down as its latest project won’t be available on Steam, which is by far the biggest storefront for PC games and a key point of sale for many developersHorses, a first-person horror game that blends gameplay and live-action sequences, is about a college student who spends a summer working on a farm. However, the farm’s “horses” are actually naked human adults who are wearing horse masks. It’s clear from the trailer that this is a game for grownups.

The studio plans to release Horses on the Epic Games Store, GOG, Itch and the Humble Store on December 2. However, Valve’s content review team blocked Horses from Steam.

“We reviewed the game back in 2023. At that time, the developer indicated with their release date in Steamworks that they planned to release a few months later. Based on content in the store page, we told the developer we would need to review the build itself. This happens sometimes if content on the store page causes concern that the game itself might not fall within our guidelines,” Valve told PC Gamer. “After our team played through the build and reviewed the content, we gave the developer feedback about why we couldn’t ship the game on Steam, consistent with our onboarding rules and guidelines. A short while later the developer asked us to reconsider the review, and our internal content review team discussed that extensively and communicated to the developer our final decision that we were not going to ship the game on Steam.”

Santa Ragione wrote in an FAQ that it’s “committed to producing challenging, adult storytelling. Horses uses grotesque, subversive imagery to confront power, faith, and violence. We reject subjective obscenity standards and believe this kind of moralizing censorship evokes a darker past in which vague notions of ‘decency’ were used to silence artists. Games are an artistic medium and lawful works for adults should remain accessible. We respect players enough to present the game as intended and to let adults choose what to play; lawful works should not be made unreachable by a monopolistic storefront’s opaque decisions.”

This particular ban precedes the recent censorship of adult-oriented games at the behest of payment processors. Santa Ragione wanted to create a Steam store page for Horses back in 2023 to help build interest. The studio says Valve wanted to see a playable build of the game before it would approve a Coming Soon page. The game was nowhere close to being finished, so Santa Ragione scrambled to put together a playable version of the game with “tons of placeholders.”

According to an email from Valve that the developer shared, it banned Horses from the storefront over “content that appears, in our judgment, to depict sexual conduct involving a minor.” Santa Ragione said Valve didn’t provide more detailed reasons for rejecting the game. Valve noted that it wouldn’t accept further submissions of Horses, “even with modifications.”

The developer claimed that it spent the next two years trying to change Valve’s mind, but the company repeatedly pointed it to Steam’s general guidelines and rejected its “requests for review and appeal.” Santa Ragione does have a plausible theory as to why Valve blocked the game from Steam, however. The studio wrote in the FAQ that:

All characters in the game are clearly older than 20 years old, as communicated by their appearance and through dialogue and documents that you will encounter in the game. We think the ban may have been triggered during the initial Steam submission by an incomplete scene on day six, in which a man and his young daughter visit the farm.

The daughter wants to ride one of the horses (in the game the ‘horses’ are humans wearing a horse mask) and gets to pick which one. What followed was an interactive dialogue sequence where the player is leading, by a lead as if they were a horse, a naked adult woman with a young girl on her shoulders. The scene is not sexual in any way, but it is possible that the juxtaposition is what triggered the flag.

We have since changed the character in the scene to be a twenty-something woman, both to avoid the juxtaposition and more importantly because the dialogue delivered in that scene, which deals with the societal structure in the world of Horses, works much better when delivered by an older character.

As a result of the Steam ban, Santa Ragione claimed it will be “very difficult“ to recoup its investment on Horses, which it claims is “not pornographic”. It spent around $100,000 on the game’s development.

The studio initially put $50,000 of its own money into Horses after signing a deal with the game’s creator, Andrea Lucco Borlera. It hoped to cover those costs with sales of its last game, Saturnalia, but that didn’t perform nearly as well as the studio hoped. Horses was slated to be featured in a bundle, but that fell apart around the same time as Valve rejected the game. Santa Ragione said the Steam ban made it practically impossible for it to find an external publisher or partner, so it ultimately raised funds from friends in order to complete the game. As such, the studio claimed it is now “in a completely unsustainable financial situation unless the game somehow recoups its development costs.”

Santa Ragione still plans to support Horses for at least another six months after release. It has set aside funds to cover the costs of fixing bugs and adding quality-of-life changes. But barring Horses finding success on non-Steam storefronts, that may be the studio’s last activity.

“I don’t want to make a final decision before seeing how the game does on launch. But if things go the way that I expect them to go, then I think [studio’s closure] is inevitable,” Santa Ragione co-founder Pietro Righi Riva told GamesIndustry.biz. “All the money we’ll earn is gonna go to the author and to the people who have offered money to finish the project. So there will likely be no money left to make a new [game]… Unless a miracle happens and Horses does very well.”

  • The Sims-like Paralives is delayed until May 2026

Folks who are looking forward to a fresh flavor of life simulation in the form of Paralives will have to wait a while longer before they can jump into the Sims-like game. The game was supposed to hit early access on Steam on December 8, but lead developer Alex Massé and the team at Paralives Studio have pushed back the release date to May 25.

Massé explained that the team expanded its playtests in the lead up to the early access period, “and the latest feedback we received made us realize the game isn’t up to the standard we wanted it to meet for release.” While the character creator and in-depth home builder modes seem to be in a solid place, playtesters encountered “impactful bugs” in the live mode and it appears that there isn’t yet quite enough to do in the town. “We feel it is necessary to work on these before delivering the product to the community,” Massé wrote. The team plans to improve the game’s onboarding experience too.

Paralives has been in development for six years, and the team has grown from two or three people in the first couple of years to an average of 10. Having such a small team meant that the developers “had to alternate long stretches of development” between the three parts of the game, Massé wrote. “We are so proud of what we have built, but now, we just need a bit more time to polish the simulation part of the game. This would ensure Paralives offers a great first experience when it launches, making players come back for every exciting free update and expansion that we will put out afterwards.”

Paralives Studio will stream 45 minutes of gameplay on its YouTube channel at noon ET on November 25. Massé said you’ll get to see what the game looks like now, including some of the current features. The team will provide more details on aspects it plans to improve before the early access release. You can expect more streams and videos in the coming months. It’s expected that Paralives will remain in early access for two years while the team adds the features and content it plans to.

Paralives is an indie alternative to the likes of The Sims and InZOI. There are other life sim games on the way before Paralives debuts, such as Pokémon Pokopia. Animal Crossing New Horizons is getting a major update and a Switch 2 version in January. However, EA will shut down The Sims Mobile that same month.

The Shade Room caught clips from Blaze Taylor’s first birthday bash on Instagram, and from the looks of it, it was lit! The Game and Shaniece Hairston led the “Happy Birthday” song for their lil’ man while folks in the background chimed in. Blaze stole the show looking too cute in a Kith top and shorts, Game kept it chill, sporting a dark tracksuit, and Shaniece popped out serving a look in a pink dress. The whole party was decked out in blue and was giving galaxy vibes as the decor included rockets and stars. Even his tiered cake seemed to mimic the look of planet as it had rings around it.

Blaze’s exact birthday is under wraps, but Game and Shaniece have kept fans locked in with sweet pics and videos of him on social media. Back in April, Game went viral after dropping some selfie flicks with Blaze. Fans ate it up and couldn’t stop gushing over Blaze’s big, beautiful eyes. • Late Lynx run leads to Game 1 win over Mercury

Courtney Williams barely missed a triple-double, and the Minnesota Lynx used a late 12-0 run to take Game 1 of its WNBA semifinal series against the Phoenix Mercury, winning 82-69 in Minneapolis on Sunday.

Williams scored a game-high 23 points while adding eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Kayla McBride added 21 points and Napheesa Collier hit for 18 to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.

Kahleah Copper scored 22 points for Phoenix but went just 10-for-23 from the floor. Alyssa Thomas added 18 to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists. Satou Sabally tallied 10 points but made only 3 of 11 shots.

The Mercury trailed 68-67 after Sami Whitcomb drained a 3-pointer with 5:13 left, but Williams started the game-breaking run with a floater on the next trip. McBride and Bridget Carleton pitched in 3-pointers to seal the outcome.

‘We’re in the playoffs, bro, you’ve got to feel the energy,’ Williams said after the game. ‘You’ve got to do your best for the team.’

Game 2 of the best-of-5 series is Tuesday night in Minneapolis before the series shifts to Phoenix.

Phoenix made its gameplan abundantly clear in the first quarter, attacking in the lane every chance it had. The Mercury erased an early 16-12 deficit by carving into it a bucket at a time, taking a 24-22 edge to the second quarter on Thomas’ tip-in with 25.4 seconds left.

Ahead 39-38 after Williams drove and scored with 3:39 left in the half, Phoenix rattled off eight straight points – all on layups – to take a 47-40 lead to intermission. It scored a whopping 42 points in the lane in the half, making just one 3-pointer and two foul shots.

Minnesota tightened up defensively in the third quarter, not allowing a point for the first 2:57 and permitting just 12 points in the period. When McBride sank a technical free throw, it led to a 59-59 tie going to the fourth quarter.

  • Lauren London Looks Back at Her Most Iconic Roles

Lauren London Looks Back at Her Most Iconic Roles

Welcome to Look Back At It, a monthly column where some of the most iconic Black actresses in Hollywood reminisce and reflect on the roles that made them stars. For this month’s installment, Lauren London breaks down her career—from ATL and This Christmas to her most recent Netflix film, You People.

The first film that made an impression on Lauren London might surprise you. “Funny Girl,” she says, “was a really big movie for me. I watched that growing up and said, ‘I want to act.’” Though she hasn’t starred in a musical of her own (“If I could sing, I absolutely would.”), London has certainly accomplished her acting dream.

Her first feature, which premiered in 2006, was the coming-of-age film ATL, a movie that she describes as completely life-changing. From there, she went on to star in the holiday classic This Christmas, the raunchy teen comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper, and the television dramas The Game and Games People Play. When speaking about acting, London sees it as more than just a job. “If you’re watching me, I don’t take that in vain,” she explains. “Being on someone’s television screen is a responsibility. I want to inspire, encourage, and motivate [my audience].”

Below, London takes us through her most iconic roles to share the lessons she’s learned, memories from set, and the divine friends she’s met along the way.

“This was completely life-changing. ATL was my first film and it was possibly one of my biggest learning lessons. I always attribute this experience to a college experience because I didn’t go to college. All of the things I assume you learn in college about yourself are what I learned on this movie. And I guess it is a little surprising [that the movie is still so popular] because when you do something you don’t really know how it’s gonna be received. You just let it go. But I’m so blessed that I was part of this project and that people still relate to it and love it. This movie is so nostalgic, too. I was only 20 years old. I was a baby. I’m extremely grateful that it’s part of my life’s work.”

Today in History: November 29, Warren Commission appointed

    Today in History

Today is Tuesday, Nov. 29, the 333rd day of 2022. There are 32 days left in the year.

    Today’s Highlight in History:

On Nov. 29, 1947, the U.N. General Assembly passed a resolution calling for the partitioning of Palestine between Arabs and Jews; 33 members, including the United States, voted in favor of the resolution, 13 voted against while 10 abstained. (The plan, rejected by the Arabs, was never implemented.)

    On this date:

In 1864, a Colorado militia killed at least 150 peaceful Cheyenne Indians in the Sand Creek Massacre.

In 1910, British explorer Robert F. Scott’s ship Terra Nova set sail from New Zealand, carrying Scott’s expedition on its ultimately futile — as well as fatal — race to reach the South Pole first.

In 1924, Italian composer Giacomo Puccini died in Brussels before he could complete his opera “Turandot.” (It was finished by Franco Alfano.)

In 1929, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Richard E. Byrd, pilot Bernt Balchen, radio operator Harold June and photographer Ashley McKinney made the first airplane flight over the South Pole.

In 1961, Enos the chimp was launched from Cape Canaveral aboard the Mercury-Atlas 5 spacecraft, which orbited earth twice before returning.

In 1963, President Lyndon B. Johnson named a commission headed by Earl Warren to investigate the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

In 1981, film star Natalie Wood drowned in a boating accident off Santa Catalina Island, California, at age 43.

In 1986, actor Cary Grant died in Davenport, Iowa, at age 82.

In 1987, a Korean Air 707 jetliner en route from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok was destroyed by a bomb planted by North Korean agents with the loss of all 115 people aboard.

In 2001, former Beatle George Harrison died in Los Angeles following a battle with cancer; he was 58.

In 2008, Indian commandos killed the last remaining gunmen holed up at a luxury Mumbai hotel, ending a 60-hour rampage through India’s financial capital by suspected Pakistani-based militants that killed 166 people.

In 2020, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New York City would reopen its school system to in-person learning, and increase the number of days a week many children attend class, even as the coronavirus pandemic intensified in the city.

Ten years ago: The United Nations voted overwhelmingly to recognize a Palestinian state, a vote that came exactly 65 years after the General Assembly adopted a plan to divide Palestine into separate states for Jews and Arabs. (The vote was 138 in favor; nine members, including the United States, voted against and 41 abstained.) President Barack Obama had lunch with defeated Republican nominee Mitt Romney in the White House’s private dining room; the White House says they discussed America’s leadership in the world.

Five years ago: North Korea launched its most powerful weapon yet, claiming a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile that some observers believed could put the entire U.S. East Coast within range. “Today” host Matt Lauer was fired for what NBC called “inappropriate sexual behavior” with a colleague; a published report accused him of crude and habitual misconduct with women around the office. Garrison Keillor, who’d entertained public radio listeners for 40 years on “A Prairie Home Companion,” was fired by Minnesota Public Radio following allegations of inappropriate workplace behavior.

One year ago: A federal judge blocked the Biden administration from enforcing a coronavirus vaccine mandate on thousands of health care workers in 10 states that had brought the first legal challenge against the requirement. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey stepped down as CEO of the social media platform; he was succeeded by Twitter’s chief technology officer, Parag Agrawal. LSU hired Brian Kelly away from Notre Dame, a stunning move by one of the most accomplished coaches in college football jumping from the sport’s most storied program to a Southeastern Conference powerhouse. Arlene Dahl, a 1950s movie star who later remained prominent in television, died in New York at 96. Merriam-Webster chose “vaccine” as its 2021 word of the year.

Today’s Birthdays: Blues singer-musician John Mayall is 89. Actor Diane Ladd is 87. Songwriter Mark James is 82. Composer-musician Chuck Mangione is 82. Hellena Taylor, the original voice actor for PlatinumGames’ Bayonetta and one of the parties at the centre of a prolonged and messy public dispute over casting and wages, has tonight issued a new statement addressing allegations that have been made against her over the past week.

The saga, which has seen claims of underpayment made, voice actors abused and a prominent developer temporarily disappear from Twitter, began when Taylor made a series of recent videos in which she accused PlatinumGames of offering her an insultingly-low pay offer to reprise her role as Bayonetta for the upcoming third game.

The role was subsequently given to Jennifer Hale—who has issued her own statements—while a Bloomberg report said PlatinumGames had originally offered to pay Taylor somewhere between $3,000 and $4,000 per four-hour session for at least five recording sessions, for a total of at least $15,000. It’s then said that when Taylor instead asked for a “six-figure sum” to voice the character, negotiations broke down.

Tonight, Taylor wrote a series of Tweets disputing some of the figures in these reports, saying:

It has come to my attention that some people are calling me a liar and golddigger. I feel the need to defend myself and my reputation in the industry.

As I posted on part three of my video thread. I explained that their first offer was too low. That offer was 10,000 dollars total. Remember, this is 450 million dollar franchise, (not counting merchandise.) I then wrote in Japanese to Hideki Kamiya, asking for what I was worth. I thought that as a creative, he would understand. He replied saying how much he valued my contribution to the game and how much the fans wanted me to voice the game. I was then offered an extra 5,0000! [Note: it appears this is a typo, and that Taylor means 5,000]

So, I declined to voice the game. I then heard nothing from them for 11 months. They then offered me a flat fee to voice some lines for 4,000 dollars. Any other lies, such as 4,000 for 5 sessions are total fabrications.

There were not “extensive negotiations.” I’ve also been informed of ridiculous fictions, such as I asked for 250,000 dollars. I am a team player. I was just asking for a fair, living wage in line with the value that I bring to this game.

I was paid a shockingly low total of £3000 total for the first game. A little more for the second. I wanted to voice her. I have drummed up interest in this game ever since I started on Twitter in 2011.

Rival Gangs Declare Peace in South Los Angeles

The Church of Scientology Community Center was the site of a historic summit of gang leaders held Sunday, July 17, in the name of peace. Now a new video and weekly conflict resolution meetings are giving a future and substance to the dream shared by the 2,500 people who attended the summit.

    Press Release

    Jul 25, 2016

History was made as rival Southern California gang leaders met at the Church of Scientology Community Center in South Los Angeles July 17 to discuss making peace on the streets.

Famous rapper and actor The Game ignited it with his Instagram invitation: “On behalf of myself@SnoopDogg, & the honorable @louisfarrakhan,” he called on “all CRIPS, BLOODS, ESE’s & all other gang members, major figures & GANG LEADERS from every hood in our city…to have the much needed conversation amongst ourselves about our influence on the youth in our respective neighborhoods & how we can serve as better role models to them & the brothers we stand beside daily.”

When it’s a gun pointed at you, and it’s cocked back, and you know the only thing standing between you and the gun is God, why you wait until then to start praying, wishing, hoping.

    The Game

Some 2,500 responded to his invitation by arriving at the summit. The message was carried throughout the community by announcements on 92.3 FM/REAL by radio host Big Boy, flyers put out by scores of community groups and churches, and word of mouth.

The Game was joined by Will.i.am, Big Boy, rapper the Problem, Nation of Islam Minister Tony Muhammad, who organized the event, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Police Chief Charles Beck and religious leaders of diverse denominations.

It was a gathering of rival gang members, cops, gang interventionists, and the families and friends of gang victims. Yet through the entire afternoon, not a single act of violence took place.

When Minister Tony Muhammad called on all who want peace and unity to raise their fists, every arm was raised. He described what they accomplished this day as being “like the cracking of an atom. It sparked something in everybody. It sparked the spirit of hope that once again we’re at a pivotal point in our history and we can make a difference in our own community.”

The next step, a strategy session and conflict resolution workshop, was scheduled for July 21, at the Scientology Community Center.

The Game put the violence in perspective when he said, “When it’s a gun pointed at you, and it’s cocked back, and you know the only thing standing between you and the gun is God, why you wait until then to start praying, wishing, hoping. It only takes a second to lose your life.” And he pointed out that peace in South L.A. will spread, because L.A. writes the passage for everything that happens, positive or negative.

Founder of the Detours gang intervention organization, Rev. Benny “Taco” Owens, said “I’ve never seen a crowd like this unless I was in prison or a chow hall. I see a lot of faces that I’ve never seen come together like this before…. This is a very, very critical moment in our city and our lives.”

In a graphic example of change, a Blood and a Crip took off their red and blue T-shirts, handed them to each other and embraced in friendship.

The second chapter in this movement was written Thursday, July 21, beginning with a video published by The Game and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck.

“Last year in the city of Los Angeles, almost 1,000 people were shot. Almost 300 of them died,” begins the police chief, who points out that 80 percent of the victims and 80 percent of the shooters were young men of color.

“We have to be more positive. We have to stop killing one another,” says The Game. “Let’s unite. Make a difference. Be the change.”

And the movement continued that evening with a strategy conference and conflict resolution workshop at the Scientology Community Center attended by community activists determined to keep the passion for peace alive.

Community Center Director Stormy Stokes opened the program by pointing out that this community has already shown that it can be the change.

“It has been proven over and over again with our Peace Rides over the past four years that our peace materials—The Way to Happiness booklets and The Million Man March Pledge—bring down crime when they are distributed in great volume throughout this city. In 2014, the homicide rate went down to its lowest point in more than 50 years. So now we are going to do it again.”

Ms. Stokes announced that this event will be the first of weekly conflict resolution workshops at Community Center. “We will make our city a safer place for our families and children.”
