  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps digital release hides a new credits surprise | The Mary Sue

    Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps is finally out on digital and there’s a surprise waiting for fans who purchase a copy. The MCU’s introduction to these heroes is absolutely littered with references to the comics and details for eagle-eyed fans. But, the digital release has something really neat for viewers who stick through the end of the credits. And, it’s a surprise that people didn’t really get during opening weekend at the theater.

    Fans on social media who picked up the digital release shared that there’s a secret QR code at the end of the movie. Inside the Future Foundation logo, after the credits roll, Marvel tucked in a secret message. It reads, “The Future Foundation extends its thanks” with a QR code attached. It’s interesting and completely unexpected after seeing the movie more than once!

    By scanning the code and following that link, viewers are treated to a Future Foundation landing page with some free comics titles to sift through. Marvel calls them “additional materials” for Marvel Unlimited. This is a fun little bonus until The Fantastic Four return in Avengers: Doomsday next winter. These comics also cover a lot of the plot points presented in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. So, let’s dive in and discuss what we’ve found here!

    The Fantastic Four’s biggest story: “The Galactus Trilogy”

    Galactus remains a force of evil in the Marvel universe.

    Viewers got a taste of The Fantastic Four’s origins in the Marvel movie this summer. But, by scanning that QR code, they can read the comic that started it all. 1961’s first issue is even part of an homage to the team that played in the promotional material for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. But, that’s just the intro to their larger adventures.

    Issue #48 heralds the coming of Galactus. And here, the trilogy of issues gets its name for real. The Watcher is on-hand for the Marvel heroes facing their biggest threat yet. The Silver Surfer and Galactus appear first here in the pages of $48. This super family is going to have to find some way to defeat something beyond their comprehension.

    Across the pages of The Fantastic Four #48-$50, the team figures out a way to drive back The Devourer of Worlds. And, as an added bonus, the Marvel Universe now has a Silver Surfer flying around to account for. This is the kind of grand storytelling that makes this era of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and more such a delight to read, even now!

    Earth X and other oddities

    Shalla-Bal in the new movie is inspired by Earth X’s take on The Silver Surfer. In the main universe, the tragic love of Norin Radd (Silver Surfer), but on an alternate Earth, a herald of Galactus herself. Julia Garner brings some icy intensity to Shalla-Bal’s plight in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

    Another big addition to these free comics is The Fantastic Four: Life Story. If you were going to pick one book that really helped form some of the tone for the Marvel movie, this would be a great pick. With all the retro-futurism about, it makes sense to use the Fantastic Four origin story most wedded to the 1960s. The gorgeous art is an added bonus too.

    Maybe the most sneaky addition here is the first issue of Jonathan Hickman’s run with Marvel’s First Family. As The Multiverse Saga has lightly riffed on the storyline “Time Runs Out,” a Hickman product through and through, it’s good to see the moment that Reed Richards resolves to “Solve Everything” included for curious fans too. We see tinges of Mister Fantastic’s compulsive drive to perfect things here, but it can get much more dire!

  • Cute things exist, like Pedro Pascal getting scared by Joseph Quinn | The Mary Sue

    The Fantastic Four: First Steps bloopers are nothing short of delightful and the entire Internet is taking notice. This week, Marvel Studios announced that their summer entry would be coming home on physical media and digital. But, the biggest point of fascination for a lot of fans out there was the fun bits of Pedro Pascal getting jumpscared by Joseph Quinn. 

    In a movie filled to the absolute brim with optimism, Pascal’s interactions with Quinn, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach shine. If there’s one good thing you can say about The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it’s that the title characters feel more like a family than they ever have in any other on-screen rendition of these heroes. All of those little moments are magnified when you see what the deleted scenes have cooking.

    While The Fantastic Four sit in the Fantasticar, Pascal’s Reed Richards looks out at an imminent threat. He’s so locked-in that he completely misses Quinn just inches from his face on the other side of the car. Just like most of us, he’s a bit shocked to turn his head and see the Johnny Storm actor just kinda of staring at him from close range. Both Kirby and Moss-Bachrach’s reactions tell a story here too. It’s easy to see Quinn pulling these kinds of pranks with regularity.

    Remembering the summer of Pedro with The Fantastic Four

    One of the biggest discussion points over this long, hot summer was how Pedro Pascal was absolutely everywhere. (Rachel Leishman has done her duty to inform as many people as possible on the way this man has ruled the zeitgeist.) But, the moment it became clear he would be Reed Richards was a wild one on the Internet. 

    Everybody had an opinion on what he would need to do to capture the Marvel Comics mainstay. All of this discussion dovetailed with the rampant discourse about how Matt Shakman would go about making The Fantastic Four in the modern age. It turns out the answer to this question is to go full-force into retrofuturism and not look back. 

    Seeing the warmth of Pascal’s Mister Fantastic here is not without its own subtle charm. Just like The Fantastic Four: First Steps offers some retro aesthetic to tantalize audiences, the Marvel star is also serving up some throwback masculinity too. He’s reserved, neat, and can serve up a joke or two when the team isn’t trying to literally save the world. It works, almost too well!

    Joseph Quinn’s understated Johnny Storm deserves love too

    This new clip also shines a spotlight on Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm. Along with Pascal as Reed Richards There was a ton of visual ink spilled about Quinn and how much he embodied the Human Torch. In fact, after the movie was released, that discussion was still very much ongoing. His take on Johnny is so different from Chris Evans’ 2000s version.

     Fans remember the Aughts version of Marvel’s First Family as heavy on the style, but not exactly like the comic book characterization. Nowhere was this more apparent than in Evans’ Human Torch. In those movies, Johnny is a hot-shot womanizer, that’s just attractive enough for audiences at the time to let it slide. This movie was going to have to call for something else entirely.

    Quinn is a wide-eyed explorer in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He’s not a dummy by any means, but still played as more naive than his counterparts. His pranks are remarkably good natured, and everyone just seems to like each other so much. It’s my favorite, and the least realistic, thing about the movie! I just hope there’s somewhere out there where the entire movie is basically 3 hours long to allow for this.

    What is in The Fantastic Four: First Steps collector’s edition?

    On October 14, an exclusive Amazon bundle for The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be available for purchase. The bundle includes a limited-edition SteelBook® with a custom magnet-front variant cover, five collector cards, and a special The Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 comic.

    Besides the Amazon exclusive, fans can also buy The Fantastic Four: First Steps pop-up Blu-ray package, exclusively at Walmart. It features a striking slipcover and a pop-up display of the team riding the iconic Fantasticar. This exclusive collectible edition also includes the Blu-ray and digital release, along with bold, retro-inspired artwork that makes it a must-have for Marvel enthusiasts and collectors alike.

    The Fantastic Four: First Steps was directed by Matt Shakman, who previously helmed Disney+’s WandaVision miniseries. The latest MCU movie was led by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/ Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. After First Steps, they will be returning in Avengers: Doomsday. Additional cast members include Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer, Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Natasha Lyonne as Rachel, and Paul Walter Hauser as Mole Man. During its theatrical run, the movie has earned a worldwide gross of over $518 million at the box office.

    The movie will be available to rent or own on digital platforms on September 23, followed by its 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on October 14.

    The Fantastic Four: First Steps is out in theaters now, and new concept art for the film shows how different the titular heroes’ suits could have looked.

    What does the Fantastic Four concept art show?

    The new art comes from Ryan Meinerding, who shared some concept art that he contributed for the movie. Among some other concepts for Galactus and others, Meinerding showed off some early designs for the group. Inspired by retro sci-fi spacesuits, Meinerding also mentioned that he tried to also fit some nods to Jack Kirby in the suit as well.

    The cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps is led by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. The film also includes Ralph Ineson as Galactus and Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer. Additionally, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne have been cast in undisclosed roles.
