  • The plan to convert CBD offices into 10,000 apartments – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

The plan to convert CBD offices into 10,000 apartments – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Even if only half the buildings identified became residential, the city could add up to 12,000 apartments, the analysis found. It would create housing, revitalise struggling corners of the city where offices haven’t recovered from COVID-19, and save emissions from knockdown-rebuilds.

But developer Ross Pelligra – who owns 85 Spring Street, one of the buildings identified in the analysis – said much of its office space had already been leased ahead of its reopening this year following an upgrade. He looked at converting it to residential – and quickly decided against it.

“It sounds great. But you spend a lot of time figuring out how to do it … it’s quicker to just go and build it from scratch,” he said.

Hassell principal Ingrid Bakker said not all the buildings identified would or could be converted, but the research showed what was possible.

She said the analysis was conservative by assuming only half the identified buildings could be retrofitted, but noted that some may not be able to add floors – meaning the total number of apartments could be lower than the “optimistic” 10,000 to 12,000.

Bakker suggested offering a rebate or tax relief for saving embodied carbon in the concrete as an incentive to owners and developers to convert.

Authorities had shown a willingness to give site-specific discretion to make conversions easier under existing planning rules, she…

Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA) – The Empat Lawang police discovered a two-hectare marijuana field in a farmland near Batu Jungul Village, Muara Pinang Sub-district, Empat Lawang District, South Sumatra, a police officer stated on Friday.

The police personnel found two thousand cannabis trees measuring 1.5 to 2.5 meters in height and arrested a man, only identified as ASM, 40, Empat Lawang Police Chief Adjunct Sen. Coms. Dody Surya Putra stated.

ASM was apprehended in a hut, built about one kilometer away from the marijuana field, while the owner, only identified as BUD, escaped the raid that the police had launched on January 30.

“The police are on the hunt for BUD,” he remarked, adding that the Empat Lawang police could uncover the case owing to the local residents’ tip-off about the marijuana field.

He further spoke of having directly led the police operation during which they had to walk for nine hours to reach the marijuana field.

“We have uprooted all of the marijuana plants and burned 1,970 of them. The remaining 30 plants are seized to be then examined in the police forensic laboratory for evidence of crime,” he stated.

“I Got Way More Energy”: Keyshawn Davis Claims to Have Become a ‘Better Person’ Since Quitting Marijuana After Facing 90 Days of Suspension – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

On October 14, Keyshawn Davis maintained his undefeated record at 10-0 with a lackluster victory over Nahir Albright in Houston, Texas. After his fight, Davis tested positive for marijuana. While marijuana is legal in many states for recreational use, it remains illegal in Texas. As a result, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) issued a 90-day suspension for Davis. This disciplinary action forced his majority win in the fight to be changed to a No-Contest. However, since then, things have changed for Davis.

    America’s Favorite Video Today

Originally scheduled to appear on the December 9 ESPN card in Florida, he had to sit out the rest of 2023. Now, as his fight with Jose Pedraza on February 8 draws closer, Davis has made some amendments for the better. In an interview on Cigar Talk, Davis revealed how the suspension helped him become a better person.

While some boxers claim marijuana helps keep them sane, such was not the case for Davis. The reason he started taking the drug in the first place was due to severe mental health issues. Such was the condition that he resorted to self-harm and had to get himself checked and put on medication.

“Back then, before I was even on the team, I used to do things to harm myself. Yeah, I went to the mental home. I was on medication for mental health daily and just throughout that process I was still smoking. Through…

Nets and Liberty Become NBA’s First Teams Sponsored by CBD Firm – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

(Bloomberg) — After relaxing its rules on CBD products for both its players and teams, the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty have become the first NBA & WNBA team to strike a deal in the CBD category.

The teams, which are under the parent company BSE Global, have signed a multiyear deal with Mynd Drinks, a CBD plant based drink that is THC free. The deal will make Mynd the official wellness and recovery drink partner for both clubs. Official terms of the deal were not disclosed. Mynd also has a deal with the Chicago Cubs, with Major League Baseball agreeing CBD sponsorships in 2022.

The NBA has been shifting its stance on hemp-based products, and began permitting its teams to sell partnerships in the CBD category in the 2023 off season.

Similarly, the league and its players association agreed to officially removed marijuana from its anti-drug testing program. The collective bargaining agreement between the two organization’s allows players to invest or own passive, non-controlling stakes in CBD companies that also produce marijuana and fully invest in companies that specifically produce CBD. The league and its union’s examples of products containing CBD are oils, creams, drinks, pills and powders.

It however does not allow players to promote marijuana. If a player wishes to promote a CBD product that is produced by a marijuana company, they would need to first get permission from the NBA and…

  • How do we solve a problem like high-potency marijuana? – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

How do we solve a problem like high-potency marijuana? – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Harms of high THC content can be avoided through education

The Jan. 25 editorial “High-potency marijuana carries health risks” misses several important realities about cannabis users. I agree with most of the harms stated in the article, many of which can be avoided by educating consumers to “start low, go slow,” and by scrupulously avoiding cannabis use in vulnerable populations, such as teens, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people with a history of psychosis.

As a cannabis clinician and participant in the legalization movement for the last quarter century, I have found that, in my experience, most cannabis users regulate their consumption, or self-titrate, to their own level of comfort. Your editorial makes it sound as if cannabis users typically use more and more of the product, but cases of marijuana use disorder are rare. It is uncomfortable to consume too much. This is where the anxiety and paranoia come in, and cannabis users tend to try to avoid this.

I agree that we fetishize high THC levels and that both the cannabis experience and the health of cannabis users might be better with lower THC consumption. We should incorporate the other components of cannabis more, such as CBD and other minor cannabinoids, not just THC. Yet if we limit the potency, people are likely to consume larger amounts to reach the same desired effect. All this accomplishes is to make the…

Stamford’s Planning Board OKs Marijuana Shops, Change of Zoning Downtown – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

STAMFORD – True to its function, the Planning Board this week signaled likely revisions to the city’s landscape.

Board members approved a zoning change that will allow redevelopment of a busy corner in the heart of downtown, and they cleared the way for two more marijuana dispensaries that would bring the city to its limit of five.

The Planning Board considers applications and votes to recommend whether the Zoning Board should approve them.

So the Planning Board sets the table.

The first request involved the 120,000-square-foot freestanding building at Broad and Summer streets that has been a retail anchor since the 1960s. For decades it was a Caldor discount department store, a downtown landmark. Now it’s a Burlington clothing store.

The plan for the site is unclear. Land-use consultant Rick Redniss went before the Planning Board seeking conformity for what he called a “split zone” – regulations now allow building heights of 150 feet in one section of the property and 75 feet in the other.

Redniss requested a zone change to permit 85-foot buildings in the second section. It complies with the recently updated building code, Redniss said, and the property-wide 85-foot height “is important to how this whole site lays out.”

Redniss offered no details about what is planned for the corner, but Planning Board Chair Theresa Dell asked him about a possible apartment building.

Dell wanted to know whether the required Below…

  • Cannabeginners: What are Cannabis Alkaloids? | High Times

Cannabeginners: What are Cannabis Alkaloids? | High Times

What does cannabis, coca leaf, and all coffee have in common? They all contain alkaloids, a powerful group of medicinal compounds found in plants around the world. While little is presently known about cannabis alkaloids, they are suspected to possess impressive medical benefits like other plant alkaloids.

    Alkaloids vs. Cannabinoids

Alkaloids are “one of the most common groups of chemicals that [have] medicinal properties found in plants,” commonly used alkaloids include “morphine, cocaine, nicotine, caffeine, quinine, ephedrine, and many more.” They derive their name, alkaloid, from the word alkali, chemicals that react like bases, counteracting acids. Usually found in the outer tissues of plants, the bitter flavor of alkaloids is believed to be a natural defense in plants to prevent them being eaten by herbivores, similar to cannabinoids and terpenes which both assist in preventing predation.

While cannabinoids like THC, CBD, CBG, and THCv, are oily, lipohpilic (binds to fats), and hydrophobic (do not bind to water) compounds, alkaloids are a very different class of chemicals. The biggest chemical difference between alkaloids and cannabinoids is that all alkaloids include a nitrogen atom which binds to additional hydrogen atoms. Cannabinoids, on the other hand, do not have any nitrogen atoms and contain a chain of carbon atoms, which gives them their oily character.

    Courtesy Duke University

Despite their differences, efficient methods to extract both alkaloids and cannabinoids from plants is to simply burn the leaves or other parts that contain the chemicals, or perform a chemical extraction. These methods have been used for thousands of years for both types of chemicals; the caffeine in coffee is chemically extracted by brewing with water, cannabis is smoked, and cocaine was originally extracted through chewing or brewed as a tea.

    Discovery of Alkaloids in Cannabis

Cannabis is a very complicated plant and “more than 500 compounds have been reported from C. sativa, of which 125 cannabinoids have been isolated and/or identified as cannabinoids.” Non-cannabinoid constituents of cannabis include “42 phenolics, 34 flavonoids, 120 terpenes and 2 alkaloids.” Though, there is some debate over the number of alkaloids which have been identified.

The discovery of alkaloids in cannabis actually manages to predate the discovery of the first cannabinoid, CBN, back in 1896, by more than a decade. In 1881, the first research on the alkaloid cannabinine was presented at the British Pharmaceutical Conference, and two years later another physiologically active alkaloid, tetanocannabin, was discovered. Cannabis alkaloid research then remained dormant until the 1970s.

In 1971, a group of scientists isolated four different alkaloids from cannabis, which they named cannabimines A-D. In 1975, two teams of researchers at the University of Mississippi (UMiss) identified and isolated the first spermidine alkaloid, cannabisativine, from the roots, leaves, and stems of both Mexican and Thai cultivars. The next year, the same researchers at UMiss isolated the second spermidine alkaloid, anhydrocannabisativine and showed that cannabisativine could be converted to anhydrocannabisativine.

While the cannabis alkaloids cannabisativine and annhydrocannabisativine were first discovered in Mexican and Thai cultivars, anhydrocannabisativine has since been “found in plant samples of Cannabis from 15 different geographical locations.”

Which Part of The Plant Has the Most Alkaloids?

Just like how not every part of a cannabis plant has the same amount of cannabinoids, alkaloids are also unequally distributed around the plant. Research has repeatedly shown that, “cannabis roots are not a significant source of cannabinoids or the aforementioned terpenes, but are rich in other compounds, including … alkaloids.” So while terpenes and cannabinoids are concentrated primarily in the trichomes on the leaves, cannabis alkaloids are primarily found in the roots (but can be found in the stems and leaves as well).

    Medical Effects of Cannabis Alkaloids

While cannabis alkaloids have a lot of medical potential, the specifics of that potential are unknown. In the case of cannabisativine and anhydrocannabisativine, “no pharmacological information is available,” but it is believed that “there are several compounds in cannabis root with potential anti-inflammatory activity, including alkaloids.”

Other researchers have noted that, as a class of compounds, “alkaloids may be used as analgesics, antibiotics, anticancer drugs, antiarrhythmics, asthma medications, antimalarials, anticholinergics, bronchodilators, laxatives, miotics, oxytocics, vasodilators, psychotropics, and stimulants,” and that likely includes cannabis alkaloids. One study of cannabis alkaloids found them to “have diuretic, analgesic, anticancer, antipyretic, and antiemetic effects.”

In one study, a petroleum ether solution of cannabis alkaloids and cannabinoids had “a course of action comparable to that of atropine,” a drug commonly given to reduce fluid in the respiratory tract during surgery, which “can also treat insecticide or mushroom poisoning.” It is not clear to what extent those observed effects were due to the alkaloids or the cannabinoids.

    A Quick Hit

Despite being one of the most common groups of medicinal chemicals found in plants, alkaloids are some of the least known chemicals in cannabis. Early research shows that they may have strong medical benefits as part of the entourage of medicinal compounds in cannabis.

Lexaria Bioscience Corporation seeks US FDA nod to begin phase 1b hypertension trial HYPER-H23-1 of DehydraTECH-CBD – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Lexaria Bioscience Corporation, a global innovator in drug delivery platforms, announced that on January 29 it has submitted its much-anticipated Investigational New Drug (IND) application with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its planned US phase 1b hypertension clinical trial HYPER-H23-1 of DehydraTECH-CBD.

This IND submission follows a successful pre-IND meeting with the US FDA which provided Lexaria with guidance related to the development and filing of the IND. From 2018 through 2023, Lexaria sponsored five investigator-initiated human clinical studies of its DehydraTECH-CBD in an aggregate total of 134 people, without recording a single serious adverse event (the “Studies”). These Studies evidenced significant reductions in resting blood pressure over both acute and multi-week dosing regimens alone and, in some cases, complementary to standard of care medications; suggesting that DehydraTECH-CBD has the potential to have broad therapeutic utility.

As indicated at the FDA website, “once the IND is submitted, the sponsor must wait 30 calendar days before initiating any clinical trials. During this time, FDA has an opportunity to review the IND for safety to assure that research subjects will not be subjected to unreasonable risk.”

Lexaria looks forward to commencing clinical trial HYPER-H23-1 as soon as possible following IND effectiveness, subject to certain conditions including funding. The…
