New Jersey Governor Marks ‘Huge Milestone’ For State’s Marijuana Market, With Over 100 Dispensaries Now Open – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

The governor of New Jersey is marking a “huge milestone” for his state’s marijuana market as regulators announce that more than 100 medical and adult-use cannabis shops are now open across the state.

“When the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission was established, our administration’s goal was to develop a stronger, fairer, and more equitable model for the rollout of an adult-use cannabis market,” Gov. Phil Murphy (D) said in a press release on Wednesday. “Reaching 100 cannabis dispensaries is a huge milestone that shows we are headed in the right direction.”

“As we continue towards our goals for the cannabis market in New Jersey, I am grateful to the Cannabis Regulatory Commission for their dedicated work and leadership on this critical area of our economy,” he said.

The NJ-CRC says exactly 102 cannabis dispensaries have now opened, just under two years since adult-use sales launched.

Jeff Brown, executive director of the commission, echoed the governor’s remarks, saying it is “undoubtedly a major milestone for the NJ-CRC and for the state.”

“After having just 12 alternative treatment centers for more than eight years, we have seen a proliferation of businesses in the last two that clearly demonstrates consumer demand and the potential of the cannabis industry in New Jersey,” he said.

Of the 102 existing marijuana dispensaries, 40 serve both patients and adult consumers, 12 only serve patients and 50 conduct only recreational sales. The…

Homelessness Melbourne: Launch Housing gives city a deadline of 2030 to end rough sleeping – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Launch Housing’s Melbourne Zero campaign celebrates one year anniversary in their bid to end street homelessness.

Councils across Melbourne are being called on to create lists naming every rough sleeper in their area to help end street homelessness by 2030.

Launch Housing is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its Melbourne Zero campaign, which tracks each local government area’s progress in ending homelessness and encourages “everyday people” to take action when they see someone without a roof over their heads.

The organisation has made 2030 their deadline to end street homelessness and believes this can be achieved if each municipality starts by curating these lists alongside increased social housing and support services.

Launch Housing is already working with six councils and have identified the number of people without stable lodgings in the City of Melbourne (75 people), Dandenong (35), Port Phillip (29), Yarra (24), Stonnington (17) and Frankston (16).

While Launch Housing chief officer of partnerships and engagement Howard Ralley conceded that there may be more as it was a “very transient population,” he said these were the people that they personally knew through their assertive outreach.

  • Study: Same-Day Cannabis Use Improves Sleep for Users With Anxiety | High Times

Study: Same-Day Cannabis Use Improves Sleep for Users With Anxiety | High Times

The relationship between cannabis and sleep is still widely debated. Research has found that cannabis can indeed help with sleep, and many consumers who use cannabis will also attest to its more sedative effects that combat symptoms like insomnia. One study even found that people are increasingly turning to cannabis instead of over-the-counter sleep aids.

Conversely, other studies suggest the opposite, that cannabis use may impede sleep in some circumstances. Ultimately, it’s a complicated topic that seems to involve a number of variables, and like a bulk of cannabis research topics, our knowledge on cannabis and sleep is still growing.

Though a recent study published in the journal Behavioral Sleep Medicine offers further proof that cannabis could help to improve sleep, specifically for consumers experiencing moderate anxiety who use cannabis the same day.

Examining Cannabis Effects on Sleep for Consumers with Anxiety

Interestingly enough, anxiety and cannabis tends to be another contentious and complex topic. While cannabis is widely known to potentially increase anxiety and related symptoms, research suggests that — once again — this can be a complex topic involving a number of variables.

Specifically, THC is known to increase anxiety at high doses, while CBD and/or low-dose THC tends to help reduce anxiety. There are also individual factors, broadly how one person may respond to cannabis as it pertain to anxiety versus another, that can come into play.

Researchers note the varied evidence for both sleep and anxiety in the study abstract, along with the various outcomes pertaining to specific cannabinoids.

“Cannabis is increasingly used to self-treat anxiety and related sleep problems, without clear evidence of either supporting or refuting its anxiolytic or sleep aid effects,” researchers write. “In addition, different forms of cannabis and primary cannabinoids delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) have differing pharmacological effects.”

To investigate the relationship between cannabis use, anxiety and sleep quality, University of Colorado-Boulder researchers examined a cohort of 348 adults with mild-to-moderate generalized anxiety symptoms. Subjects were instructed to consume either cannabis flower or edibles dominant in THC, CBD or combined equal ratios of both THC and CBD.

To follow the progression of each participant through the experiment, individuals in the study completed daily online surveys for 30 days.

A Growing Body of Literature on Cannabis, Sleep and Anxiety

The study ultimately found that when participants reported cannabis use on a particular day, they also reported better sleep quality the following night. Researchers also noted that moderation analyses found better perceived sleep following cannabis use for respondents with higher baseline affective symptoms.

The study also noted that respondents who used high-CBD edibles reported the highest perceived quality of sleep.

Another recent study similarly examined how cannabis affects anxiety and sleep, looking to compare outcomes among patients prescribed cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) for generalized anxiety disorder, both with and without impaired sleep.

The research noted an association between CBMPs and improvements in anxiety, along with improvements in sleep and health-related quality of life. Similar to the CU Boulder study, those with the most severe baseline anxiety were most likely to experience the highest clinical improvements in anxiety upon the final 12-month assessment.

A similar study from 2023 found that CBMP prescriptions were associated with “clinically significant improvements in anxiety.” The study also noted improvements in sleep quality and quality of life at 1-, 3- and 6-month time points.

Looking more closely at cannabis and sleep, particularly same-day cannabis use, another recent study conclude that cannabis use is associated with “same day improvements in self-reported sleep quality, but not pain or depressive symptoms, although sleep improvements occurred in the context of increased frequency of cannabis use, raising the risk for cannabis use disorder.”

Virginia delegates advance marijuana retail marketplace bill – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia House of Delegates on Monday narrowly passed a bill aimed at establishing a retail marketplace for the sale of recreational marijuana.

Virginia voters decided to end the state’s prohibition on recreational marijuana in 2021, with a date of Jan. 1, 2024 set for the beginning of retail sales. However, in the years since the voters made that decision, little was done to make sure the state would meet its Jan. 1 deadline for retail sales.

In November 2023, the voters put Democrats in control of both houses of Virginia’s General Assembly – a political blow to Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin who campaigned hard for other Virginia Republicans leading up to the election.

Now – on Monday – the Virginia House of Delegates advanced HB698 by a narrow margin of 52-48. The bill is a first step in moving the state forward on what Virginia residents voted for years ago.

The vote was largely along party lines with Democrats voting yes to approve the bill and Republicans voting no. Only one Republican member voted to move the bill forward –…

Metlink, the public transport authority for the Wellington region, has announced significant enhancements to public transport access for residents of Strathmore Park and Wilton. The introduction of bus Route 4 marks a significant milestone in the regional council’s efforts to restore trust in public transport, according to Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter.

Daran Ponter expressed enthusiasm for the additions, stating, “The addition of Route 4 is a really positive step forward after recent difficulties arising from COVID and driver shortages. It’s no secret that trust in public transport has been shaken, but we’ve been working hard to return reliability to the bus network. It’s great we’re now able to add services our passengers have been calling for that decongest our roads and reduce emissions.”

The enhancements include various service improvements across the Wellington region:

    • The reinstatement of 54 weekend bus trips previously suspended due to driver shortages
    • Extension of Route 20 to Wellington Railway Station
    • Boosted Karori bus services with additional morning peak trips on routes 33, 34 and 2

Legal marijuana opens door to harm; Carroll school board endorsements; librarians’ agendas – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Legal marijuana opens door to public health harms

Kudos to Sherry Greenfield for getting these two articles on the front page: ”Officials set to discuss recreational cannabis”  on Jan. 25 and “Public Hearing set for cannabis rules” on Jan. 27.

Unfortunately, once again, our valiant and fearless County Commissioners are relegated to the difficult task of finding appropriate “restrictions” to a very bad law. One that was passed by the voting citizens of Maryland making cannabis use legal, which became effective July 1, 2023. Our noble commissioners do not even support the legalization of marijuana! Good for them!  I wonder how many other Carroll County citizens also voted against the law!  I know I did. Cannabis legalization is a boon to big business, but many are paying with their health.

Here are some text quotes from The Epoch Times piece “The Overlooked Risks of Legalized Marijuana” from the Jan. 24-30 edition:

“The hazy narrative of harmless recreation masks darker truths now coming to light. Evidence is mounting that the push for recreational drug use has led to cannabis-related hospitalizations and links to mental health issues such as anxiety. depression, cannabis use disorder, and more.”

“Cannabis use disorder is marked by cravings and inability to quit despite life problems, according to a University of Maryland Review.”

“Cannabis use is leading to more emergency room visits, especially for 18-25-year olds.”

    “Heavy Cannabis…

Police seize thousands of illegally-grown marijuana plants in search of Norridgewock home – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

NORRIDGEWOCK — Police seized thousands of marijuana plants while executing a search warrant at a residence Thursday morning, marking the latest in a series of recent busts of similar illegal growing operations across the state.

Photo courtesy of Somerset County Sheriff’s Office

More than 2,000 growing plants and 10 pounds of harvested marijuana were seized in the multi-agency raid of the Riverside Drive residence involving over a dozen law enforcement officers, according to Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster.

Other “illicit drug related materials” and a 2016 Ford Transit van believed to be connected to the operation were also seized by police, according to Lancaster.

No arrests were made as no one was at the residence when police were investigating the property shortly after 7 a.m., Lancaster said. The people involved face charges of cultivation of marijuana and trafficking in scheduled drugs, both Class B offenses, when they are arrested.

Lancaster declined to provide further information about the suspects and how police identified this residence, citing an ongoing investigation.

The Norridgewock bust comes as Maine’s congressional delegation renewed their call to federal authorities last month to investigate illegal growing operations that reportedly benefit Chinese investors. Police in recent weeks have made arrests in Belgrade, China, Cornville, and Whitefield in connection with illegal grows that authorities say are circumventing Maine’s legal…

THU AM News: Survey of Oshkosh businesses finds greater optimism about state’s direction; MU poll finds widespread support for medical marijuana – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

    — Oshkosh-area business leaders are more optimistic about Wisconsin’s business climate in 2024 than they were last year, a recent survey suggests.

The Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce’s latest annual survey found 75% of respondents feel the state is headed in the right direction, compared to 42% in the 2023 survey.

“They’re generally feeling very positive about where we’re headed in 2024,” Chamber President and CEO Rob Kleman said this week in an interview. “I think 2023 shaped up to be very positive as well from the results that we’ve seen here, but they believe that Oshkosh and our region, our area is doing well, and we’re in a position of strength.”

Fifty-eight percent of respondents said their 2023 sales had exceeded the previous year, while 65% had higher profits, 48% added jobs and 81% increased wages from 2022 levels.

Looking ahead to the rest of this year, 70% of respondents expect sales to outperform 2023 and 57% expect to hire more people in 2024.

Meanwhile, 76% of respondents rate their company’s outlook as “good to excellent” in the next six months. That rises to 89% for the next 12 months and 93% for the next one to three years.

And while 47% said they have unfilled job openings, that percentage has fallen from 55% in last year’s survey.

But local businesses continue to struggle with finding qualified workers, Kleman said. When asked about efforts to fill job openings in the past three months, 68% of respondents…
