    U.S. to probe Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ system after pedestrian killed

    DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. government’s road safety agency is again investigating Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” system, this time after getting reports of crashes in low visibility conditions, including one that killed a pedestrian.

    The National Highway Safety Administration says in documents that it opened the probe on Thursday after the company reported four crashes after Teslas entered areas of low visibility including sun glare, fog and airborne dust.

    In addition to the pedestrian’s death, another crash involved an injury, the agency said.

    Investigators will look into the ability of “Full Self-Driving” to “detect and respond appropriately to reduced roadway visibility conditions, and if so, the contributing circumstances for these crashes.”

    The investigation covers roughly 2.4 million Teslas from the 2016 through 2024 model years.

    A message was left early Friday seeking comment from Tesla, which has repeatedly said the system cannot drive itself and human drivers must be ready to intervene at all times.

    Last week Tesla held an event at a Hollywood studio to unveil a fully autonomous robotaxi without a steering wheel or pedals. CEO Elon Musk, who has promised autonomous vehicles before, said the company plans to have autonomous Models Y and 3 running without human drivers next year. Robotaxis without steering wheels would be available in 2026 starting in California and Texas, he said.

    The investigation’s impact on Tesla’s self-driving ambitions isn’t clear. NHTSA would have to approve any robotaxi without pedals or a steering wheel, and it’s unlikely that would happen while the investigation is in progress. But if the company tries to deploy autonomous vehicles in its existing models, that likely would fall to state regulations. There are no federal regulations specifically focused on autonomous vehicles, although they must meet broader safety rules.

    NHTSA also said it would look into whether any other similar crashes involving “Full Self-Driving” have happened in low visibility conditions, and it will seek information from the company on whether any updates affected the system’s performance in those conditions.

    “In particular, this review will assess the timing, purpose and capabilities of any such updates, as well as Telsa’s assessment of their safety impact,” the documents said.

    Tesla reported the four crashes to NHTSA under an order from the agency covering all automakers. An agency database says the pedestrian was killed in Rimrock, Arizona, in November 2023 after being hit by a 2021 Tesla Model Y. Rimrock is about 100 miles north of Phoenix. Messages were left seeking information on the crash from local and state agencies.

    Tesla has twice recalled “Full Self-Driving” under pressure from NHTSA, which in July sought information from law enforcement and the company after a Tesla using the system struck and killed a motorcyclist near Seattle.

    The recalls were issued because the system was programmed to run stop signs at slow speeds and because the system disobeyed other traffic laws. Both problems were to be fixed with online software updates.

    Critics have said that Tesla’s system, which uses only cameras to spot hazards, doesn’t have proper sensors to be fully self-driving. Nearly all other companies working on autonomous vehicles use radar and laser sensors in addition to cameras to see better in the dark or poor visibility conditions.

    The “Full Self-Driving” recalls arrived after a three-year investigation into Tesla’s less-sophisticated Autopilot system crashing into emergency and other vehicles parked on highways, many with warning lights flashing.

    That investigation was closed last April after the agency pressured Tesla into recalling its vehicles to bolster a weak system that made sure drivers are paying attention. A few weeks after the recall, NHTSA began investigating whether the recall was working.

    The investigation that was opened Thursday enters new territory for NHTSA, which previously had viewed Tesla’s systems as assisting drivers rather than driving themselves. With the new probe, the agency is focusing on the capabilities of “Full Self-Driving” rather than simply making sure drivers are paying attention.

    Michael Brooks, executive director of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, said the previous investigation of Autopilot didn’t look at why the Teslas weren’t seeing and stopping for emergency vehicles.

    “Before they were kind of putting the onus on the driver rather than the car,” he said. “Here they’re saying these systems are not capable of appropriately detecting safety hazards whether the drivers are paying attention or not.”

    Why it’s called the Hunter’s Moon

    It’s called the Hunter’s Moon because it follows the Harvest Moon. The full Harvest Moon can occur in either September or October. It’s the moon closest to the autumnal equinox.

    This year that happened in September, so the full moon that follows is called the full Hunter’s Moon. Its name originated from its function as a signal for hunters to begin preparing for winter. 

    What’s a supermoon?

    A supermoon is when the moon’s orbit is at its closest to Earth. The moon will appear brighter and larger than normal. 

    This month’s supermoon orbits closer to Earth than any of the other full moons this year, making it appear even larger than September and August’s supermoon. The final supermoon of the year will occur in November and while it will still appear larger than normal, it won’t look as big as October’s. 

    Alternative names

    According to the farmer’s almanac, names of moons corresponded with entire lunar months and were derived from Native American, Colonial American and European sources.

    Other names for the Hunter’s Moon reflect the signals or activities of the season.

    Elon Musk unveils Tesla’s ‘Cybercab,’ plans to bring autonomous driving tech to other models in 2025

    LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tesla unveiled its long-awaited robotaxi at a Hollywood studio Thursday night, though fans of the electric vehicle maker will have to wait until at least 2026 before they are available.

    CEO Elon Musk pulled up to a stage at the Warner Bros. studio lot in one of the company’s “Cybercabs,” telling the crowd that the sleek, AI-powered vehicles don’t have steering wheels or pedals. He also expressed confidence in the progress the company has made on autonomous driving technology that makes it possible for vehicles to drive without human intervention.

    Tesla began selling the software, which is called “Full Self-Driving,” nine years ago. But there are doubts about its reliability.

    “We’ll move from supervised Full Self-Driving to unsupervised Full Self-Driving. where you can fall asleep and wake up at your destination,” he said. “It’s going to be a glorious future.”

    Tesla expects the Cybercabs to cost under $30,000, Musk said. He estimated that the vehicles would become available in 2026, then added “before 2027.”

    The company also expects to make the Full Self-Driving technology available on its popular Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in Texas and California next year.

    “If they’re going to eventually get to robotaxis, they first need to have success with the unsupervised FSD at the current lineup,” said Seth Goldstein, equity strategist at Morningstar Research. “Tonight’s event showed that they’re ready to take that step forward.”

    When Tesla will actually take that step, however, has led to more than a little anxiety for investors who see other automakers deploying similar technology right now. Shares of Tesla Inc. tumbled 9% at the opening bell Friday.

    Waymo, the autonomous vehicle unit of Alphabet Inc., is carrying passengers in vehicles without human safety drivers in Phoenix and other areas. General Motors’ Cruise self-driving unit had been running robotaxis in San Francisco until a crash last year involving one of its vehicles.

    Also, Aurora Innovation said it will start hauling freight in fully autonomous semis on Texas freeways by year’s end. Another autonomous semi company, Gatik, plans to haul freight autonomously by the end of 2025.

    “Tesla yet again claimed it is a year or two away from actual automated driving — just as the company has been claiming for a decade. Indeed, Tesla’s whole event had a 2014 vibe, except that in 2014 there were no automated vehicles actually deployed on public roads,” Bryant Walker Smith, a University of South Carolina law professor who studies automated vehicles, told The Associated Press in an email. “Now there are real AVs carrying real people on real roads, but none of those vehicles are Teslas. Tonight did not change this reality; it only made the irony more glaring.”

    Tesla had 20 or so Cybercabs on hand and offered event attendees the opportunity to take rides inside the movie studio lot — not on Los Angeles’ roads.

    At the presentation, which was dubbed “We, Robot” and was streamed live on Tesla’s website and X, Musk also revealed a sleek minibus-looking vehicle that, like the Cybercab, would be self-driving and can carry up to 20 passengers.

    The company also trotted out several of its black and white Optimus humanoid robots, which walked a few feet from the attendees before showing off dance moves in a futuristic-looking gazebo.

    Musk estimated that the robots would cost between $28,000-$30,000 and would be able to babysit, mow lawns, fetch groceries, among other tasks.

    “Whatever you can think of, it will do,” he said.

    The unveiling of the Cybercab comes as Musk tries to persuade investors that his company is more about artificial intelligence and robotics as it labors to sell its core products, an aging lineup of electric vehicles.

    Tesla’s model lineup is struggling and isn’t likely to be refreshed until late next year at the earliest, TD Cowen analyst Jeff Osborne wrote in a research note last week.

    Osborne also noted that, in TD Cowen’s view, the “politicization of Elon” is tarnishing the Tesla brand among Democrat buyers in the U.S.

    Musk has endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and has pushed many conservative causes. Last weekend he joined Trump at a Pennsylvania rally.

    Musk has been saying for more than five years that a fleet of robotaxis is near, allowing Tesla owners to make money by having their cars carry passengers while they’re not in use by the owners. Musk said that Tesla owners will be able to put their cars into service on a company robotaxi network.

    But he has acknowledged that past predictions for the use of autonomous driving proved too optimistic. In 2019, he promised the fleet of autonomous vehicles by the end of 2020.

    The announcement comes as U.S. safety regulators are investigating Full Self Driving and Autopilot based on evidence that it has a weak system for making sure human drivers pay attention.

    In addition, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration forced Tesla to recall Full Self-Driving in February because it allowed speeding and violated other traffic laws, especially near intersections. Tesla was to fix the problems with an online software update.

    Last April in Snohomish County, Washington, near Seattle, a Tesla using Full Self-Driving hit and killed a motorcyclist, authorities said. The Tesla driver told authorities that he was using the system while looking at his phone when the car rear-ended the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

    NHTSA says it’s evaluating information on the fatal crash from Tesla and law enforcement officials.

    The Justice Department also has sought information from Tesla about Full Self-Driving and Autopilot, as well as other items.

    DALLAS (AP) — Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and Democratic Rep. Colin Allred met for their only debate Tuesday night, trading attacks over abortion and immigration in a closely watched race that could help determine which party wins control of the U.S. Senate.

    Nationally, Democrats view Texas as one of their few potential pickup chances in the Senate this year, while Cruz has urged Republicans to take Texas seriously amid signs that the former 2016 presidential contender is in another competitive race to keep his seat.

    From start to finish in the hourlong debate, Cruz sought to link Allred to Vice President Kamala Harris at nearly every opportunity and painted the three-term Dallas congressman as out of step in a state where voters have not elected a Democrat to a statewide office in 30 years.

    Allred, who would become Texas’ first Black senator if elected, hammered Cruz over the state’s abortion ban that is one of the most restrictive in the nation and does not allow exceptions in cases of rape or incest. The issue is central to Allred’s underdog campaign and his supporters include Texas women who had serious pregnancy complications after the state’s ban took effect.

    Pressed on whether he supports Texas’ law, Cruz said the specifics of abortion law have been and should be decided by the Texas Legislature.

    “I don’t serve in the state Legislature. I’m not the governor,” he said.

    Cruz later blasted Allred over his support of transgender rights and immigration polices of President Joe Biden and Harris, accusing him of shifting his views on border security from the positions he took when he was first elected to Congress in 2018.

    “What I always said is that we have to make sure that as we’re talking about border security, that we don’t fall into demonizing,” Allred said.

    Allred accused the two-term U.S. senator of mischaracterizing his record and repeatedly jabbed Cruz for his family vacation to Mexico during a deadly winter storm in 2021 that crippled the state’s power grid.

    The two candidates closed the debate by attacking each other, with Cruz painting an Allred victory as a threat to Republicans’ grip on Texas.

    “Congressman Allred and Kamala Harris are both running on the same radical agenda,” Cruz said.

    Allred, meanwhile, cast himself as a moderate and accused Cruz of engaging in what he described as “anger-tainment, where you just leave people upset and you podcast about it and you write a book about it and you make some money on it, but you’re not actually there when people need you.”

    The last time Cruz was on the ballot in 2018, he only narrowly won reelection over challenger Beto O’Rourke.

    The debate offered Allred, a former NFL linebacker, a chance to boost his name identification to a broad Texas audience. Allred has made protecting abortion rights a centerpiece of his campaign and has been sharply critical of the state’s abortion ban. The issue has been a winning one for Democrats, even in red states like Kentucky and Kansas, ever since the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in 2022 to strip away constitutional protections for abortion.

    Cruz, who fast made a name for himself in the Senate as an uncompromising conservative, has refashioned his campaign to focus on his legislative record.

    What to know about the 2024 Election

    Allred has meanwhile sought to flash moderate credentials and has the endorsement of former Republican U.S. Reps. Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney.

    The two candidates alone have raised close to $100 million, according to the most recent reports from the Federal Election Commission. Tens of millions more dollars have been spent by outside groups, making it one of the most expensive races in the country.

    Despite Texas’ reputation as a deep-red state and the Democrats’ 30-year statewide drought, the party has grown increasingly optimistic in recent years that they can win here.

    Since former President Barack Obama lost Texas by more than 15 percentage points in 2012, the margins have steadily declined. Former President Donald Trump won by 9 percentage points in 2016, and four years later, won by less than 6. That was the narrowest victory for a Republican presidential candidate in Texas since 1996.

    “Texas is a red state,” said Mark Jones, a political science professor at Rice University in Houston. “But it’s not a ruby-red state.”

    The rare comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas will be visible again tonight after making its closest approach to Earth on Saturday. It will be the optimal night to observe it, as its position in the night sky will be away from the sun’s glare.

    Astronomers say it should be bright enough to see with the naked eye, although telescopes and binoculars will give a better view. 

    What is a comet?

    A comet is a group of ice and dust particles leftover from the solar system’s formation. These particles heat up as they approach the sun, releasing their characteristic streaming tails.

    This comet, also designated C/2023 A3, was discovered last year and is named for the observatories in China and South Africa that spied it.

    It came from what’s known as the Oort Cloud, well beyond Pluto. After making its closest approach about 44 million miles (71 million kilometers) of Earth, it won’t return for another 80,000 years — assuming it survives the trip.

    In 2023, a green comet that last visited Earth 50,000 years ago zoomed by the planet again. Other notable flybys included Neowise in 2020, and Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake in the mid to late 1990s.

    How to see it

    Those hoping to spot it should venture outside soon after sunset and look to the west. Several comets are discovered every year, but many burn up near the sun or linger too far away to be visible without special equipment. This comet you will see with the naked eye tonight. 

    The comet will be located 30 degrees from the sun, which means it will be relatively easy to see fairly high in a dark sky. As long as you have a clear view of the western horizon after sunset, you should be able to see it. 

    According to sky and telescope, you’ll begin to see it 45 minutes after sunset but it will be brightest an hour to two hours post sunset. Find Venus and look “two and a half fists” to the upper right of the planet and you should see the comet.

    Mexican music is normally categorized as lively, jovial, and loud, with brass horns and drums that practically force you to dance. But beyond the cumbias and rancheras that we adore, there will always be ballads that bring us down to Earth. Songs about love, lust, and heartbreak uplift our spirits when we are in love, and console us when that love has been shattered into a million little pieces.

    The absolute masters of the romantic ballad are Los Temerarios, a band from Zacatecas, Mexico that was formed in the late 1970s, and enjoyed four decades of heart-wrenching hits. They are in the middle of their farewell tour across the US, Mexico, and Latin America at the moment, and will finalize this long goodbye in Mexico City later this year.

    The music of Los Temerarios was never at the top of my list of records I purchased or music that I played around the house, but somehow it has always been part of my life. This was music that my tias listened to while they were cooking, and it would be blasting from the radio when my tios were on the grill. I remember my mother singing along to their songs as she listened to Spanish language radio station La Tremenda 1010AM as she cleaned the house and got ready for work.

    Brothers Adolfo Angel and Gustavo Angel are masters of the romantic ballad, pulling on heart strings and providing the soundtrack of love for their adoring fans.

    Thursday evening was the band’s first for three sold-out concerts at Toyota Center, which is really impressive for any performer, let alone a Mexican act. As the audience filled into the arena, you could feel the anticipation in the air. Once the Angel brothers took to the stage, they were met with a grand applause, leading into the first song of the night, “Enamorado De Ti.”

    Most of the band’s tracks are slow to medium in tempo, full of melodic notes from the keyboards, soft guitar chords, and driven drum breaks between the verses. I must admit, I haven’t listened to a Temerarios song for a very long time, but somehow those lyrics and melodies that were buried deep in my memory found their way to my mouth. I caught myself singing songs that I haven’t heard in 20-plus years, and enjoying every moment.

    The audience was equally mesmerized, also singing along loudly to each track while they held their dates close and danced in their seats. The opening set continued with “Tu Infame Engaño,” “Una Tarde Fue” and “Como Te Recuerdo.”

    The word “temerario” translates as “a reckless person” as well as “fearless” and “daredevil.” Their band logo and some of their album covers prominently feature a wolf, which is a symbol of both masculinity and beauty. Machismo will always be part of the Latin American male ego, but there’s no shame in being in love and sharing your feelings. Los Temerarios have provided the soundtrack of love for their adoring fans for as long as I can remember.

    The brothers explained to the audience that this show was particularly special because their mother, wives, and other close friends and family were in attendance near the front row. They each blew kisses towards their mom, and took turns serenading her and mouthing the words “Te Quiero Mucho” throughout the evening (I love you!).

    The set list included 30 songs and the show went on until around 11pm. One of my favorite moments of the evening was when they sang a cover of “Qué De Raro Tiene” by Vicente Fernandez. The crowd sang most of the night fairly loudly, but they pushed those vocal chords to the max during this song.

    The encore included the hits “Te Quiero,” “Mi Vida Eres Tú,” and “La Mujer De Los Dos.” A sea of cell phone lights illuminated the arena during this time, and everyone swayed back and forth, shining their light brightly as a “Thank You” to this amazing band for the litany of hits and years of love and support through our highs and lows.

    Tropical Depression 13 formed in the eastern Atlantic on Wednesday, Oct. 2 becoming Tropical Storm Leslie on Thursday, Oct. 3. It was the twelfth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season and the eighth hurricane. 

    Despite following in Hurricane Kirk’s wake, Leslie was able to strengthen into a hurricane on Oct. 5. It remained a Category 1 hurricane for several days before weakening to a tropical storm on the morning of Oct. 8. 

    It looked as though Leslie would weaken and soon dissipate but as Leslie moved northwest it traveled over warmer water and on the night of Oct. 8, it strengthened back into a hurricane, even becoming a Category 2 hurricane early on Oct. 10. 

    By the next morning, however, Leslie moved north into a hostile sheared environment and was weakened to a tropical storm before dissipating shortly after. Leslie made no impact on land throughout its life cycle.

    Hurricane Milton is breaking records before landfall

    Hurricane Milton continues to churn in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday along the west coast of Florida.


    What You Need To Know

    • Hurricane Milton peaked in intensity with winds of 180 mph
    • Surface pressure dropped to the fourth lowest at 897 mb
    • Its small size aided in explosive development in the Gulf of Mexico


    Ahead of expected landfall, this storm is breaking many records. From rapid intensification to maximum winds to minimum pressure, Milton will earn its place in history.

    Milton’s history

    Milton developed from a tropical disturbance in the Caribbean Sea. On Saturday, Oct. 5, it became Tropical Depression 14, and less than three hours later; it was upgraded to Tropical Storm Milton.

    Milton intensified into a hurricane by the afternoon of Oct. 6, and by the morning of Oct. 7, it had reached Category 3 or major hurricane status with winds of 125 mph. The storm began exploding, and by 5 p.m. eastern, winds were 180 mph.

    Rapid intensification

    As defined by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), rapid intensification is “an increase in the maximum sustained winds of a tropical cyclone of at least 35 mph in 24 hours.” Milton surpassed that by nearly three times that amount.

    The 5 a.m. Milton advisory on Oct. 7 had winds of 90 mph. Just 12 hours later, winds were 180 mph, some of the highest winds ever recorded in an Atlantic hurricane.

    Milton intensified from a tropical depression with winds of 35 mph on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. to a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 160 mph on Monday, Oct. 7 at 11:55 a.m. This sets a record for the fastest intensification from a depression to a Cat 5 storm, 48 hours 55 minutes.

    History-making pressure

    On Monday, Oct 7, Milton’s surface pressure plummeted to 897 mbar, the fourth lowest surface pressure ever recorded in the Atlantic basin in the modern satellite era. Only Hurricanes Rita and Wilma from 2005 and Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 had lower pressures.

    How Milton intensified so quickly

    For a hurricane to develop, certain ingredients are needed, including water temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, rising air and light winds aloft to support thunderstorm development and a low pressure. Milton had all of this and remained small in size, all aiding in explosive development.

    “Due to Milton’s tiny core, it was able to wrap up very quickly. When a storm is extremely small, you tend to have a much faster ramp up, and down, of intensity due to it avoiding some of the more hostile air to the north,” explains Spectrum News 13 Orlando Meteorologist Zach Covey.

    The meteorological setup that caused the catastrophic flooding in the southeast

    The cleanup continues in parts of the southeast after a combination of storms, including the remnants of Hurricane Helene, devastated the area. As of Oct. 7, fatalities have reached the hundreds, with the number expected to rise.


    What You Need To Know

    • A stalled frontal boundary brought days of rain to the southeast prior to Helene making landfall
    • Orographic lift enhanced the rain in the mountains
    • Meteorologists and government officials did their best to relay the messages of flash flooding dangers


    Rainfall totals in the mountains of North Carolina and South Carolina were measured by feet. However, the tremendous amount of rain can’t solely be blamed on Helene. Another synoptic-scale meteorological feature was at play.

    Spectrum News Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Jeff Crum explains the unfortunate events, “Days ahead of Helene, we had heavy rain in the region right over the mountains. Some areas had 6-10” and then Helene hit. It was a recipe for disaster.”

    The timeline

    The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted a region in the western Caribbean Sea on Sept. 17 for possible tropical development. It took a few days for it to become organized, but it began to get its act together and formed a low pressure on Sept. 22. Due to its proximity to land, the NHC designated it as Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 the next day.

    At the same time, a strong cold front was slowly moving through the Midwest. This front was forecast to cross the Ohio Valley and eventually stall along the Appalachian Mountains by midweek.

    On Sept. 23, National Weather Service outlets in South Carolina and North Carolina began messaging about the potential impact of a Florida Big Bend landfalling hurricane that could occur in northeastern Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina Thursday night into Friday.

    Crum says, “NWS and our mets, started warning people Tuesday (Sept. 24)/Wednesday (Sept. 25) of the catastrophic potential.”

    NWS-Greenville-Spartanburg, SC, messaged “A tropical disturbance over the Caribbean remains unnamed, but is expected to develop quickly into a hurricane by the end of Wednesday before bringing widespread heavy rainfall, flooding and possibly strong wind gusts to our area Thursday night and Friday.” Graphics used displayed the total possible precipitation for this region from Wednesday afternoon through Saturday morning with 4 to 6 inches in Asheville, Nor Car. And upwards of 8 to 10 inches in Tyron, Nor Car.

    Rain ahead of Helene

    On Wednesday, Sept. 25, rain began falling from the stalled frontal boundary along the Appalachians. Asheville, collected 4.09 inches. The same day, Helene moved into the Gulf of Mexico and was upgraded to a hurricane. 

    Rain continued to inundate areas along the Appalachians, and before Helene even made landfall, Asheville had already observed nearly ten inches of rain.

    Communication is key

    NWS was now messaging, “Prepare for catastrophic, life-threatening flooding.” Another message, that same day, contained the language: “This has the potential to be an extremely rare event with catastrophic flash-flooding that hasn’t been seen in the modern era… Numerous landslides expected.”

    In a storm like this, Crum says communication is key. How do you reach everyone and explain the impending dangers?

    “I think the frustration for the weather community is how that message was disseminated through state and local governments. In the mountains, a lot of folks don’t have the internet, cellphones or satellite TV. They don’t have cable out in the hollers. How in the heck that alert and dire warning was put out beyond what we do is a question for review among sociologists and such.” 

    Helene’s landfall

    Hurricane Helene made landfall just after 11 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26 as a Category 4 with winds of 140 mph along Florida’s Big Bend, near Perry, Fla. Once inland, Helene weakened, but also picked up speed.

     

    As it moved north in Georgia during the early morning hours on Sept. 27, it was downgraded to a tropical storm. The center of the storm stayed just west of Anderson, South Car. And Asheville, North Car.

    This put both areas on the eastern side of the storm. This side, also known as the “dirty side” contains heavy rain and wind. Thanks to the orographic lift and the influences from that stalled boundary, moisture was enhanced.

    Another 4.11 inches of rain fell during the morning hours in Asheville. This was on top of the nearly ten inches of rain they had picked up two days prior. Two hours after Helene made landfall, NWS was urging residents to “take action now!” showing a flood inundation map that suggested widespread flooding was forecast in Asheville.

    There was nowhere for the water to go. Although the rain ended midday on Sept. 27, the creeks and streams became backed up with many of the rivers not forecast to crest until later that night. A Flash Flood Emergency was issued, indicating life-threatening flash flooding with widespread life-threatening landslide activity expected across the mountains.

    Unfortunately, as seen through pictures and videos, this forecast became a reality and much of the area was devastated. The highest rainfall includes the higher elevations with Busick, North Carolina. picking up 30.78 inches throughout the event.

    At the time of this writing, there were still several hundred people missing, with the emotional and financial costs still yet to be tallied. This event will be remembered as one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit the United States, surpassing even Hurricane Katrina 24 years ago.

    In Spanish, the word sorono is an adjective that means “imposingly deep and loud.” Carin León is from the Northern Mexican state of Sonora, which is absolutely perfect because that man is loudness personified. From his big, imposing body structure and swagger, Carin uses his voice as a tool of celebration, honoring the musical traditions of his country and his city of birth, which is Hermosillo.

    On Sunday evening at Houston’s Toyota Center, Carin León and his banda took the stage for an after-party celebration. This crew played the main stage at ACL Music Festival on Friday, then taped an episode of Austin City Limits on Saturday. Now I’m not saying that Toyota Center isn’t as special as those other two stages, but I would have understood if Carin would have performed a more subdued show here in Houston.

    However, the exact opposite occurred. It seems that after the pressure-filled shows in Austin, Houston received a show full of special surprises and an abundance of energy. León appeared on stage with his customary cowboy hat tilted to the side, a brown jacket with fringe, and enough energy to rival the sun. He strolled and danced his way across the stage to the opening track “Frene Mis Pies” which opens with a funky guitar riff that repeats throughout the song.

    Muchas gracias por siempre aguantarme Houston!” he thanked the crowd (Thank you for always supporting and putting up with me). The set list continued with “Te Vi Con El,” “Según Quién,” and the duo “The One” with Kane Brown. León is such a fan of music of many genres, that he will skip around from banda to country, tejano to rock, keeping the party going until the venue says its time to go.

    And then the bottle of Claze Azul tequila made an appearance. Leon took a few drinks and it fueled his vocals, which he needed in order to complete his extensive set list. “Quien quiere llorar esta noche?!” he asked the audience (who feels like crying tonight?). This question led into the Colombian vallenato song “Si Tu Amor No Vuelve,” which was a welcome and interesting selection.

    Halfway through the concert, León changed into a personalized Houston Rockets jersey. He continued to thank Houston for all the support declaring that he will carry Houston in his heart with him until the day he dies. He then picked up an acoustic guitar, sat on a bar stool, and sang a beautiful cover of “You’re Still The One” by Shania Twain. Unexpected but really beautiful.

    And the covers kept coming! Songs by Bobby Pulido, Los Cadetes de Linares, Chalino Sanchez, and Cheyenne made the crowd stand up and dance in their seats and in the aisles of the nearly full arena. I especially loved the medley of Banda music from the ’90s, including “Nina Fresa,” “La Noche Que Murio Chicago” and “Ramito De Violetas.” And of course, we can’t forget “La Boda Del Huitlacoche,” which was definitely a highlight of the night.

    But by far, the most sentimental tribute was the set in honor of the late Joan Sebastian, who Carin has previously called one of his heroes.

    As the night came to a close, we were serenaded with “Tennessee Whiskey” and then Carin’s biggest hit “Primera Cita.”

    León is a spectacular talent with a sincere love for music of all genres, and we are lucky to celebrate this love together during his performances. Viva Mexico, viva Carin León!

    Tropical Storm Kirk formed in the eastern Atlantic on Sunday, Sept. 29, becoming a tropical storm on Monday, Sept. 30. It was the eleventh named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season and the seventh hurricane of the season.

    • Kirk became a Category 4 hurricane at one point but did not impact any land


    Kirk formed in the eastern Atlantic on Sunday, Sept. 29, becoming a tropical storm on Monday, Sept. 30. It was the eleventh named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

    By Tuesday, Oct. 1, Kirk strengthened into a hurricane, making it the seventh hurricane of the 2024 season. 

    On the morning of Friday, Oct. 4, Kirk reached peak intensity with winds of 145 mph, making it the third major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) of the season. By the evening, it had weakened and winds decreased.

    Kirk moved north into colder waters, causing it to weaken and become extratropical as it accelerated off to the northeast on Oct. 7. Extratropical cyclone Kirk passed north of the Azores before the remnants arrived along the coast of France and western Europe. 

    Although Kirk never made landfall as a tropical system, high surf was reported along the east coast when Kirk was a hurricane and as a remnant low, the storm brought heavy rain and flooding, and gusty winds to parts of Spain, France and Portugal. Mudslides were even reported in the city of Galicia, Spain.

    Tropical Depression 14 formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday morning, but was quickly upgraded to Tropical Storm Milton shortly after.

    Milton was upgraded to a Tropical Storm about two hours after it was designated as a tropical depression. 

    Not much has changed with Milton except the minor strengthening to tropical-storm stateus. It has maximum winds of 40 mph and is moving north northeast at 3 mph. 

    The track won’t be identical to Helene, but regardless of intensity, heavy rain, wind and storm surge is forecasted for the Florida peninsula next week.
