Sherrock, who made history by becoming the first woman ever to win a match at the PDC World Darts Championship in 2019, is pleased with her progress but is also aware of the hard work ahead to earn her Tour Card.

She said on Twitter: “Very pleased with my game the past 3 days, especially today – but nothing won yet as the hard work starts tomorrow.

“But win or lose I’m just pleased to be part of QS and playing my game the best I can. Good luck and well done to everyone else who plays tomorrow.”

  • Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Australian Open

Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Australian Open

    [ad_1]

Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the 2023 Australian Open, the tournament confirmed via Twitter on Sunday. Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine will be competing in her place.

“Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Australian Open,” the tweet read. “We will miss her at #AO2023.” The reason for her withdrawal was not given.

Osaka, 25, made headlines in 2021 when she withdrew from the French Open, rather than be forced to attend mandatory press conferences, which had already led to a $15,000 fine and threat of suspension. She candidly spoke about the toll the sport was taking on her mental health, writing on Instagram in May 2021, “I have suffered long bouts of depression … and I have had a really hard time coping with that.”

A year later, Osaka told CBS News, “I love tennis,” adding, “I think I had to take a little step back from it just to see the full picture again.”

Osaka is a two-time champion of the Australian Open, but was upset in the third round of last year’s tournament by an American challenger, Amanda Anisimova. She has amassed a total of four Grand Slams.

In June, Osaka withdrew from Wimbledon, citing an issue with her Achilles tendon

Osaka was once the number one ranked women’s tennis player in the world, but her ranking has since fallen to 47th. She has not played since Sept. 2022, when she withdrew from the Tokyo Open, according to the Associated Press.

Osaka joins a list of other elite players who will not be participating in the Australian Open, which is set to begin Jan. 15. Carlos Alcaraz, the top-ranked men’s player, and Venus Williams have also withdrawn, citing injuries.

In an epic final, Novak Djokovic wins first title in Australia since his deportation last year | CNN

    [ad_1]

    CNN
     —

Twelve months after he was deported from the country, Novak Djokovic is back in Australia, winning titles and preparing for the Australian Open.

Djokovic won his first title in Australia since last year’s deportation, defeating American Sebastian Korda in an epic three-setter final 6-7(8) 7-6(3) 6-4 at the Adelaide International on Sunday.

Facing a championship point at 5-6 in the second set, it seemed that the Serb would succumb to a shock defeat to the world No. 33.

He had appeared visibly frustrated after Korda had won the first set, shouting and gesturing at his players’ box.

“I’d like to thank my team for handling me, tolerating me in the good and bad times today,” Djokovic said afterwards, according to Sky Sports. “I’m sure they didn’t have such a blast with me going back and forth with them, but I appreciate them being here.”

But the experience of the 21-time grand slam winner showed, and he fought back from championship point to take the second set in a tiebreak and wrap up the title in the third.

The victory was Djokovic’s 92nd tour-level trophy, equaling Rafael Nadal’s haul for the fourth-most singles titles in the Open Era, behind only Jimmy Connors (109), Roger Federer (103) and Ivan Lendl (94)

“It’s been an amazing week and you guys made it even more special. For me to be standing here is a gift, definitely,” Djokovic told the crowd afterwards, according to the ATP website. “I gave it all today and throughout the week in order to be able to get my hands on the trophy.

“The support that I’ve been getting in the past 10 days is something that I don’t think I’ve experienced too many times in my life, so thank you so much [to] everyone for coming out every single match.”

It provides Djokovic with the perfect platform to launch his Australian Open campaign, where he is seeking to win his 10th title as well as equal the men’s record of grand slam titles, currently set by Nadal at 22.

The Australian Open begins on January 16 in Melbourne.

Two-time champion Naomi Osaka withdraws from Australian Open

    [ad_1]

Osaka, who won the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021, added her name to a growing list of notable withdrawals.

Naomi Osaka has confirmed she will not play at the Australian Open, adding her name to a growing list of notable withdrawals.

Organisers confirmed in a tweet on Sunday that Japan’s Osaka, the Open champion in 2019 and 2021, will not be playing in Melbourne.

“Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Australian Open. We will miss her at #AO2023,” the tweet said.

The 25-year-old Osaka’s ranking has slipped to 47 and she has not played since September after withdrawing during the second round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. She won her first-round match at that tournament when Australia’s Daria Saville withdrew after one game with a knee injury.

Osaka won only one completed match since May and was beaten in the first round of her three previous tournaments, including the US Open at which she also is a two-time champion.

She had been considered unlikely to play in the first Grand Slam of the season.

Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska has been promoted to the main draw in her place.

Osaka took a mental health break after missing the 2021 French Open and later said she had been struggling with depression and anxiety for several years. Her absence from Melbourne adds to uncertainty over when or if she will resume her career.

Last week she posted pictures on social media of a trip to Europe with her rapper boyfriend Cordae.

The Australian Open, which starts on January 16, has already lost several leading players including men’s world number one Carlos Alcaraz who pulled out Saturday with an ankle injury.

Former finalist Simona Halep also is not playing this year and Venus Williams also has handed back a wildcard entry after suffering an injury while practising in Auckland.

Open organisers were already reeling from the retirements last year of reigning women’s champion Ashleigh Barty and legends Serena Williams and Roger Federer.

But nine-time champion Novak Djokovic is back after missing last year’s event when he was deported over his vaccination status.

Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal, who won the 2022 title in Djokovic’s absence, will also line up, taking over the top seeding from Alcaraz.

Venus Williams out of Australian Open due to injury

    [ad_1]

MELBOURNE, Australia — Venus Williams has withdrawn from the Australian Open for an undisclosed injury she sustained while playing in a tournament in Auckland, New Zealand this week.

A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, Williams received a wild-card entry into the Australian Open last month to compete in what would have been her 22nd major at Melbourne Park.

But the Australian Open said on Saturday the 42-year-old Williams had withdrawn from the tournament beginning Jan. 16. It did not provide specifics regarding the injury.

It continues a run of misfortunes for Williams, who last played at Melbourne Park in 2021.

A two-time Australian Open finalist, Williams injured an ankle and knee in that appearance when stumbling awkwardly at the net in a second-round match against Sara Errani.

Her best efforts at Melbourne Park came when she was beaten by her sister Serena Williams in finals in 2003 and 2017.

Now ranked 1,003, Williams said when granted the wild card in December that she was excited to be returning to Melbourne.

“I’ve been competing in the country for over 20 years now and the Australian community has always supported me wholeheartedly,” she said.

The five-time Wimbledon singles champion has struggled with injuries over the past two years and was restricted to playing just four tournaments in the U.S. last August. She did not progress beyond the first round in those events and ended her season when beaten by Alison van Uytvanck at the U.S. Open.

But she started 2023 on a positive note by defeating fellow American Katie Volynets in Auckland. She was then beaten by China’s Zhu Lin in three sets in the second round.

Djokovic advances to face Medvedev in Adelaide semis

    [ad_1]

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic beat Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-4 at the Adelaide International on Friday to set up a semifinal with Daniil Medvedev.

The combined ATP-WTA event is a warmup for this year’s Australian Open, which the top-seeded Djokovic missed last year after being barred from the country because he was not vaccinated against COVID-19.

“Early on he was a better player. He was dictating,” said 35-year-old Serb Djokovic after improving to 8-0 against his Canadian opponent. “(Then) I started finding my serve and my groove on the court.”

The 21-time Grand Slam winner, who is preparing for a shot at a 10th Australian Open title, will face third-seeded Medvedev on Saturday.

“I don’t think there’s going to be too many short points tomorrow unless we both serve well,” Djokovic said. “Normally when you play Daniil, you have to be ready to go the distance, physically, mentally, game-wise.”

Medvedev, the runner-up last year to Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open, defeated fellow Russian Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-3 on Friday.

“It’s never easy to play your compatriot,” Medvedev said. “I’m happy that I managed to really raise my level, especially in the end of both sets, and really happy to be through to the semis.”

Medvedev is the 2021 U.S. Open champion, but has lost twice in the finals in Australia — and in 2021 it was against Djokovic.

“For sure I played well last year and I’m playing well right now,” Medvedev said, “To be honest, that’s all that matters. In order to win a slam, or be in the final, you have to be at your best for seven matches.”

“I managed to do it once and I was really close last year,” he added. “And that’s what I’m going to try to do again in a few weeks in Melbourne.”

In other quarterfinals on Friday, American Sebastian Korda defeated sixth-seeded Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-1 and Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan beat Alexei Popyrin of Australia. Korda will face Nishioka in the semifinals.

Teenage qualifier Linda Noskova also beat two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka. The 18-year-old Czech player overcame Azarenka 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6) in a quarterfinal that lasted nearly three hours.

A first-round winner over third-seeded Daria Kasatkina, Noskova has now won five consecutive matches in only her sixth appearance in the main draw of a WTA event.

World No. 5 Aryna Sabalenka was the first woman through to the semifinals after beating Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 7-5.

    [ad_1]

SYDNEY — Frances Tiafoe beat Britain’s Daniel Evans 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday to move the United States into the United Cup mixed teams tournament semifinals.

Tiafoe’s victory gave the Americans an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five Sydney City Final.

It means the U.S. will be among four teams in the semifinal portion of the tournament that begins Friday at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena.

Earlier, world No. 3 Jessica Pegula gave the United States a 2-1 lead by beating Britain’s Harriet Dart 6-2, 6-0.

In the afternoon session, Madison Keys moved the U.S. ahead after rallying from a set down to defeat Katie Swan 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. But world No. 14 Cameron Norrie came back to post a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win against No. 9 Taylor Fritz to level the match.

Pegula and Fritz then won the final mixed doubles match to wrap up the 4-1 U.S. win.

“I think Madi really set the tone with her match,” Pegula said. “I think I did everything really well today. I could feel it. Some days you come out firing and you feel really good. I was honestly trying to settle myself down because I was seeing the ball really well today.”

Poland and Greece won deciding mixed doubles matches to advance 3-2.

Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz defeated Camilla Rosatello and Lorenzo Musetti 6-2, 6-1 to lead Poland past Italy in the Brisbane City Final.

It was Swiatek’s second win on the day after the World No. 1 beat Martina Trevisan 6-2, 6-4 to pull Poland even at 1-1 following Musetti’s win over Daniel Michalski in the opening match.

Matteo Berrettini then beat Hurkacz 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to give Italy a 2-1 before Poland’s Magda Linette forced the decider by beating Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 6-2.

”(It feels) amazing, honestly. I don’t know. I think it’s better winning in a team than individually. I’m so happy that we did it together and team effort for sure paid off,” Swiatek said. “Today’s match was pretty stressful because we (don’t) play mixed doubles usually.

“But I’m so happy that I was able to play a solid game and Hubi was pushing our opponents and really making it easy for me. So I’m really happy that we played such a nice game.”

Greece moved on from the Perth City Final as Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Croatia’s Borna Gojo and Petra Martic 7-6 (6), 6-4.

Donna Vekic beat Despina Papamichail 6-2, 6-0 to put Croatia ahead before Tsitsipas beat Borna Coric 6-0, 6-7 (4), 7-5 on his sixth match point.

Sakkari then gave Greece a 2-1 lead by beating Martic 6-3, 6-3, before Gojo’s 6-4, 6-2 win over Stefanos Sakellaridis set up the mixed double decider.

Despite its loss, Italy still qualified as the next best-ranked team and will join the U.S., Poland and Greece in Sydney.

New world No 1 Michael Smith has set his sights on dominating darts after following his Grand Slam of Darts victory with an elusive maiden World Darts Championship title at Alexandra Palace.

Smith fired a sensational nine-darter in the second set of his 7-4 victory over three-time champion Michael van Gerwen, who almost produced a nine-darter of his own in the same leg, before winning four of the last five sets to secure the biggest victory of his career so far.

The Englishman’s success is revenge for his loss against Van Gerwen in the 2019 final, with Smith – who also finished runner-up in last year’s contest – expecting the pair to clash in many more Alexandra Palace finals in the years ahead.

“I thought [we would] give the crowd what they deserve and they got a magical night,” Smith told Sky Sports. “I told you when I got the Grand Slam, I will eventually be a world champion and I want to do what this man [Van Gerwen] has done – I want to take over this sport, but he’s still there.

“It is 1-1 now in the Worlds and I took my chances, but he knows and I do that it is not going to be the last one here where we play each other. I have said it for years, he is the best player in darts and we have got to take our chances and I finally took it.”

“The two greatest moments in my life are sat over there, both my kids, but if I didn’t have kids that would be!” Smith added. “From a sporting memory it’s the greatest ever, I don’t think that will ever be topped. Even if I won a second, it will never top how I just felt then.”

    Van Gerwen: Smith ‘deserved’ victory

Smith claimed Van Gerwen “let him off” and gave him a chance he “didn’t deserve” during his victory, although the Dutchman was quick to pay tribute to his playing partner for his impressive win.

“Of course, I didn’t take my chances, but he was there at the moments he had to be. He deserved it, he played well there and fair play to him.”

Van Gerwen posted 15 maximums and fired a 99.58 average during a pulsating final, where he led 3-2 before losing four of the next five sets, with the Dutchman frustrated at the opportunities he squandered during the tight contest.

“I had two darts in the second set, when he [Smith] threw the nine-darter,” Van Gerwen added. “There were a few darts in the seventh set and in the ninth set I had three darts to win and when you don’t hit them, he’s going to throw everything at you.

“I wasn’t playing to well in the last few sets, but you can only blame yourself for that. It doesn’t take anything away from Michael, because I think he played brilliantly the whole game.

“I wasn’t what I wanted to be but that’s part of the game unfortunately and you have to take it on the chin.”

Van den Bergh came out for this match with Van Gerwen looking all-business and he immediately made a mark by reeling in the fifth 170 checkout of the tournament for a 2-1 lead in legs, but the Dutchman levelled before nailing an 11-darter to take the opening set on throw.

‘Mighty Mike’ then reeled off three unanswered legs to break for the first time and double his lead with 55 per cent on the doubles before the pair exchanged words at the start of the third set with Van Gerwen appearing to encroach his opponent’s space on the stage.

The three-time world champion stayed focused to crash in his own 170 finish and he soon cleaned up an eighth straight leg on his way to extending the lead to 3-0 with a set record of 128.83 – throwing just 35 darts in the process.

It was job done in the next with MVG completing a whitewash of Van den Bergh with a 108.3 average and nine 180s.

Only 74 Darts needed! Michael van Gerwen averaged 121.86 in the last two sets. In the last four sets (14 legs) his average was 112.62.

“It feels phenomenal to have played the game I played tonight,” said Van Gerwen. “I gave it everything and I played out of my skin.

“It cost so much energy but I am able to do it and that is the most important thing. With the crowd behind me again today, it feels phenomenal.

“Games can get tense but you need to focus yourself and that is exactly what I did.”

Smith is hoping a few episodes of Catchphrase will help him prepare for his third attempt at becoming a world champion after booking his spot in Tuesday’s final with a brilliant victory over ‘The German Giant’ Clemens.

Both players came out slinging some serious arrows but it was ‘Bully Boy’ who edged a blistering first set 3-2 with a 110.7 average, four 180s and a 106 checkout in the deciding leg.

The St Helens thrower was left kicking himself in the next after moving 2-0 up and seemingly in control. Clemens, who has been christened ‘Gaga’ by his German fans, levelled with finishes of 68 and 70 to take it 3-2 despite Smith averaging just shy of 110.

Smith took a 2-1 lead in the third set thanks to a monstrous 144 checkout but once again he was pushed to a deciding leg. Clemens wired tops for a 116 finish, allowing Smith to return for tops to regain the lead.

Smith, last year’s runner-up to Peter Wright, pinned the bull for a gargantuan 161 to raise the Ally Pally roof in set four. However, Clemens held his nerve to clinch it 3-2 and restore parity in what was turning into a real tungsten battle.

In a pulsating semi-final, the 32-year-old newly-crowned Grand Slam of Darts champion swept through the fifth set in consecutive legs to regain the upper-hand with a stunning 112.73 set average.

And Smith struck in the fifth leg of the next with a brilliant 83 on the bullseye to move 4-2 up before claiming the next in another decider to make it make it three sets on the spin to close in on a place in the final.

Michael Smith finished more than one third of his 22 legs in four visits to the oche.

Martina Navratilova, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, has been diagnosed with two forms of cancer, she revealed to Tennis.com in an article published Monday. The 66-year-old said doctors diagnosed her with Stage 1 throat cancer as well as an unrelated form of breast cancer.

“This double whammy is serious but still fixable, and I’m hoping for a favorable outcome,” she told the outlet. “It’s going to stink for a while, but I’ll fight with all [I’ve] got.”

Navratilova said she first noticed a sign of cancer during the Women’s Tennis Association finals in Fort Worth, Texas, last November. It was there she noticed a lymph node in her neck was enlarged, and when it didn’t reduce on its own, she got a biopsy.

She was diagnosed with Stage 1 throat cancer stemming from human papillomavirus, or HPV. HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection that is thought to cause about 70% of oropharyngeal cancers in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Navratilova told Tennis.com that doctors issued a strong prognosis and that she will begin treatment this month.

This isn’t Navratilova’s first battle with cancer. She was previously diagnosed with a non-invasive form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, in February 2010 after a routine mammogram. This form of breast cancer, known as stage 0 breast cancer, makes up roughly 1 in 5 new breast cancer diagnoses, according to the American Cancer Society, which says that “nearly all women” with this diagnosis can be cured.

She underwent a lumpectomy and six weeks of radiation following that diagnosis and announced later that year that she was “cancer-free.”

Navratilova has won more singles tournaments, doubles events and matches than any male or female tennis player since the Open Era began in 1968, according to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, which said she “bulldozed and mowed down opponents in historical proportions.”

Born in Czechoslovakia, she became a U.S. citizen in 1981, and has been a major title holder since 1975, when she won in doubles at the French Open. She has been named the Women’s Tennis Association’s “Tour Player of the Year” seven times, and has been ranked by several news and sports organizations as one of the best athletes of specific years and of the century.

Djokovic gets warm welcome in doubles loss at Adelaide

    [ad_1]

ADELAIDE, Australia — Novak Djokovic lost his doubles match but received a warm welcome from the crowd at the Adelaide International on Monday.

The 21-time major winner was deported from Australia a year ago after arriving unvaccinated against COVID-19 at a time when the country was still subject to strict quarantine regulations and proof of vaccination.

His first match was a low-key doubles encounter alongside Vasek Pospisil, and the pair lost 4-6 6-3 (10-5) to Tomislav Brkic and Gonzalo Escobar.

Questions about how he would be received were quickly answered when Djokovic’s supporters flocked to the stadium to welcome him back.

Djokovic begins his singles campaign on Tuesday against Constant Lestienne as he builds up to the Australian Open, where he is looking for a record-extending 10th title.

Also Monday, Czech teenager Linda Noskova produced one of the first shocks of the 2023 season, beating eighth-ranked Daria Kasatkina of Russia 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3 in the opening round.

The 18-year-old Noskova came through a tough qualifying draw in which she beat world No. 58 Anna Kalinskaya and No. 43 Anastasia Potapova before achieving the biggest win of her career over third-seeded Kasatkina.

The 102-ranked Noskova is competing in only her fifth main draw on the WTA Tour and had never played, let alone beaten, a top-10 player. She had been 0-2 against top-20 opponents.

Her best win before Monday had been over 38th-ranked Alizé Cornet in the second round en route to the semifinals in Prague last July.

Noskova took the first set comfortably in 46 minutes and broke to lead 4-3 in the second before Kasatkina broke back. She served for the match at 6-5 in but Kasatkina again fought back to take the set in a tiebreaker.

But the Czech revived to win the deciding set and the match in just over 2-1/2 hours, finishing with a sweeping cross-court forehand on match point. She broke Kasatkina’s serve eight times overall, hit 57 winners off the ground and won 21 of the 24 points when she came to net.

Kasatkina had an eventful 2022 season during which she broke back into the top 10. She also came out as gay and openly denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Noskova reached a ranking high of 87 in 2022 and qualified for the main draws at the French and U.S. Opens.

“It’s been a lot of ups and downs but I think it was a really good season,” Noskova said. “I started around 300, I think, and then around 100 now, so it’s a pretty good progress.

“Obviously I need to pick it up a little bit to get back into the (top) 100 but hopefully I’m going to achieve it this year.”

Noskova now will face the winner of the match between Australia’s Priscilla Hon and American qualifier Claire Liu.

Later, fourth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova of Russia beat Amanda Anisimova of the United States 6-3, 6-0.

On the men’s side, Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan upset fifth-seeded Holger Rune of Denmark 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Leylah Fernandez progresses at ASB Classica

    [ad_1]

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Canada’s 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez opened her 2023 season with an emphatic 6-1, 6-1 win Monday over 15-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova in the first round of the ASB Classic.

Third-seeded Fernandez needed only 61 minutes to sweep by the Czech teenager, who entered the main draw on a wild card.

Fernandez beat three top-5 players, including defending champion Naomi Osaki, on her way to the 2021 US Open final where she was beaten by Britain’s Emma Raducanu, who also is in the main draw at Auckland.

The 20-year-old said life had been tough since her final appearance at Flushing Meadows, which substantially raised expectations of her performance.

“It’s been tougher more mentally and emotionally because you don’t really know what the future holds for you and you have these big dreams and sometimes you get knocked down and you feel like that’s the end of the journey,” she said.

“I try to not think about the past and just keep thinking about the present and keep moving forward.

“One of my goals is to be more consistent, to get deeper into tournaments and see where I’m at physically, mentally and also tennis-wise.”

Earlier China’s Zhu Lin beat sixth seeded American Madison Brengle 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in a match which lasted almost four hours due to rain delays.
