    Chicago — Adriana Flores, a single mother of two boys, watches every dollar, and even though she works full-time as an educator, she earns less than $40,000 per year.

    Last year, she could only dream of new soccer supplies for her sons.

    “We could get by,” Flores told CBS News. “But how horrible is it to live your life just getting by? That’s not enjoying it.”

    However, thanks to a new $500 monthly payment she will receive for the next two years, she has been able to do more than just get by.  

    “I don’t stress as much because I have that little cushion,” Flores said.

    The Chicago-area mom is one of more than 3,200 families who are receiving direct payments in the first-ever Cook County Promise Guaranteed Income Pilot Program for low-earning households.

    “The money is unconditional and unrestricted,” explained Harish I. Patel with the Economic Security Project, a group which advocates for guaranteed income programs.

    Cook County’s program is one of 130 similar guaranteed income pilot programs in 32 states and Washington, D.C., which have public and private funding and offer monthly stipends of anywhere from $50 to $1,500, according to data from the Economic Security Project.

    “What we have seen is people, especially mothers, are spending money on diapers, food for their kids, sometimes getting that interview so they can have a full-time job, or starting a small business,” Patel said. “That’s actually where all the cash is going.” 

    Thanks to the extra income, Flores was able to rent a prom tuxedo for her son Isaiah, while her other son Elias now has the right gear for soccer.

    “Seeing that joy on their face when I’m like, ‘Oh, you know, I can pay for this, I can pay for that,’ you know, I like it,” Flores said.

    LiveSchool today announced the release of The School Culture Report, a comprehensive look at school culture trends across the United States based on a March survey of U.S. educators.

    Survey respondents represented 48 states and Washington, D.C., and included Principals, Assistant Principals, Deans of Students, Teachers, and Paraprofessionals. The survey explored educator perceptions of student behavior, school culture, and staff morale.

    “Our survey indicates how dire the cultural challenge is for schools. Educators are loud and clear that they need help addressing the underlying conditions in which students are learning,” says Matt Rubinstein, CEO and founder of LiveSchool, a school culture platform.

    Key findings include:

    • 68% of respondents cited student behavior as the top challenge facing their school.
    • Over 71% of teachers cited “disrespectful conduct” as the top behavior challenge. Another 61% cited social-emotional skills.
    • 57% of respondents expect behavior referrals to increase or significantly increase this year.
    • Teacher morale is at an all-time low: 99% of teachers ranked teacher morale as low. 72% of administrators ranked teacher morale low.
    • 80% of administrators cited school culture as their number one priority next school year.

    According to an Assistant Principal in Tennessee, “This year, we saw unprecedented behaviors which have given us insight into the goals we need to set for school culture next year.”

    Evaluating today’s media messages can be complex, and the information landscape is rapidly changing. CML’s 90-minute course makes evidence-based media literacy education available to everyone with internet access, everywhere in the world

    The Center for Media Literacy (CML), a leader in media literacy research, program design and evidence-based frameworks since 1989, has launched Global On-ramp to Media Literacy, a 90-minute, self-guided course that can introduce the concepts of media literacy education to anyone with access to the internet, anywhere in the world. The interactive course uses texts, videos, quizzes and infographics to cover topics that range from CML’s long-proven Five Key Questions and Core Concepts and Empowerment Spiral, to information about copyright, to CML’s MediaLit Kit – a collection of core ideas and tools that are fundamental to media literacy’s inquiry-based pedagogy. The course was developed by Linda M. Wiley, an experienced instructional designer, along with CML President Tessa Jolls and Monika Hanley, a CML associate, to guide users through the articulation of media literacy theory, practice and implementation.

CML’s affiliates in Singapore; Lima, Peru (Medios Claros); Los Angeles, CA (Ignite Global Good, LLC) and Kaunas, Lithuania (Vytautus Magnus University) will undertake communications campaigns through social media, email, media relations and other outreach activities.     In response to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, Canadian data intelligence company ioAirFlow is heeding the call from health organizations worldwide for better building ventilation monitoring to mitigate the transmission risk of COVID-19 in schools.

    The third annual O’Connor Civics Challenge, an online civics competition for middle school students, is expanding its program in 2022.  

    Open to all students currently in 6th through 8th grade, participants are challenged to choose one civics topic from a list of options and express their knowledge of civics through various art forms. Categories include a short video, song, audio or video storytelling, poetry, written essay, or mixed media art, including a poster, painting or sculpture via a photograph submission of the artwork. For those wishing to create a video, brief tutorial videos provide instruction to produce a civics video up to three minutes in length. 

    Finalists in each grade will be awarded Apple products, including a Macbook Pro for First Place winners. Registration is now open and entries may be submitted through March 26, 2022, the birthday of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

    The #OConnorCivicsChallenge encourages students to learn about civics topics, then share their knowledge with others through artistic creations. Participants may choose from the following six topics: the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, the Judicial Branch, Citizenship: Rights & Responsibilities, Checks & Balances and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

    In addition to student prizes, middle school teachers whose students achieve at least 25% registration for the Civics Challenge can earn a $100 gift card. Teachers whose student(s) earn an Apple prize will receive an additional $250 gift card.

    Powerful new tutoring training program delivers educator training to sustain long term student success

    A new collaboration between Lesley University and The Ohio State University has resulted in the launch of the Leveled Literacy Intervention National Tutoring Scale-up Model, an evidence-based intervention that provides teacher training for implementation of intensive instruction to students who are performing significantly below grade level in reading and writing.

    The Leveled Literacy Intervention National Tutoring Scale-up Model is designed to help students in grades K-2 make accelerated and sustained literacy progress.     ​​Among the school reopening choices outlined by Governor Roy Cooper and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Plan B allows North Carolina students to return to classrooms in a blend of in-person and virtual instruction. Accordingly, Wake County Families to Safely Reopen Schools respectfully requests that the Wake County Board of Education (the “School Board”) finalize a clear plan to reopen schools under Plan B no later than Oct. 1 and that schools reopen no later than Oct. 22.

    Wake County Families to Safely Reopen Schools believes in the Wake County Public School System, our school administrators, and our teachers. We believe that our community is strong and that we can create a public-private partnership to return students and teachers to schools safely, consistent with The Strong Schools NC Public Health Toolkit (K-12). Most important, we believe that there is no replacement for in-person student-teacher interaction within the school building. We believe that our students deserve and are legally entitled to this education.

    The School Board’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been inconsistent and muddled. ​The School Board has changed the date for reopening at least three times and currently takes the position that schools will be reopened in Plan B as soon as it is “practical,” without providing clear guidance what that means. We have written to our School Board members seeking clarity and have received no concrete response.

    On July 10, Superintendent Cathy Moore stated that decisions will be made in accordance with “state health guidelines and legal requirements that are handed to school systems.” The state has given the School Board a toolkit for reopening. The governor has allowed schools to reopen in Plan B. Parents and the community are offering to help. The School Board continues to stall.

    To date, the School Board has no plan to safely reopen the schools for in-person instruction. In fact, in a September 9 response to a member of the group regarding a reopening date, school board member Christine Kushner stated, “I just don’t have any answers for you that reflect a consensus way forward.” However, that same day Vice-Chairwoman Roxie Cash stated that she supports a return to the classroom saying “I do not believe that we can wait any longer to put … children back in the classroom.”

    The School Board must take positive action to determine what it will take to open the schools. The time is now. A return to in-person instruction will require monumental efforts from administrators and teachers. The plan must come from the top. Our children’s education is too important to politicize.

    Wake County Families to Safely Reopen Schools is made up largely of tax-paying families in Wake County. Since its creation on Aug. 26, the group has accumulated more than 1,500 members and is steadily growing. You can find the group on Facebook.

    ​​​​​Empowering students by fostering student agency has been shown to improve outcomes, leading to gains in student engagement and achievement. But many school systems struggle to implement this approach effectively.

    To remedy this problem, Agentic Learning today launched a competitive grant opportunity for school districts to work with the organization on an innovative and comprehensive one-year program to engage all learners and improve academic outcomes. Agentic Learning is conducting a nationwide search for school districts that believe student agency should be a primary goal in education and will award grants to two districts upon completion of a rigorous review process.

    We have been observing the growth of STEAM, Personalized Learning (PL), Digital Learning (DL) and a host of other trends in education. With the pressure from businesses and the societal impact of many students not being prepared to handle conflicts, harassment, bullying, and problem-solving, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has been growing as a major need. Teachers across the country are embracing the opportunity to help build strong young people, as states are beginning to allow and encourage blended learning approaches.

    Linsey Covert, founder of TEAMology, “Early in my school counseling career, I saw the need to create something that could change the way schools were approaching social emotional learning, school climate, and character education. I wanted to provide the necessary resources and tools for educators to help them build strong character, leadership skills, and an overall sense of helping one another. It also only made sense to make a connection to home and engage parents. So, twelve years ago, we began building courseware based on six strong character foundations, we even created six relatable characters that students ‘study’ to build their own strong foundations.  Partnering with experts in the field from Penn State University, we began testing the course work in schools five years ago. We tested, refined and researched every aspect of the coursework. It was important to us that teachers could integrate our foundations across their curriculum.”

    What we did not anticipate was the impact Project TEAM would have on the teachers in terms of less teacher turnover. It appears that the teachers also find value in bonding as a team to help the students apply all the foundations developed by TEAMology.

    Dr. Richard Hazler & Dr. JoLynn Carney have spent their careers researching school violence and bullying prevention. They have been asked many times over the years to develop or partner with a bullying prevention program. “Our answer has always been ‘no’ because, while there are good programs out there that deal specifically with bullying, violence, or some other issue, we wanted a program that promoted investment and reward for the school community as a whole. The internal energy and rewards that come from such a unified and team-oriented approach is why we have actively, and professionally invested in the research, development, and evaluation of Project TEAM.”

    “What it takes to reduce bullying is a community that creates an environment where the behavior is not accepted and helping behaviors are supported. The TEAM concept is really a critical one for schools that can allow schools to see change. Dr. JoLynn Carney joined in the research and development of Project TEAM. “What we always suspected was that creating a positive environment by empowering the students with strong prosocial attitudes and skills would help with bullying problems, other disciplinary issues, and provide a more productive environment for learning and growing.  We now have the data that applying this approach with fidelity actually works. “What we did not anticipate,” Dr. Hazler said. “Was the impact Project TEAM would have on the teachers in terms of less teacher turnover. It appears that the teachers also find value in bonding as a team to help the students apply all the foundations developed by TEAMology.” Dr. Carney added, “That is just very satisfying.”

    Dr. Sue Kanigsberg, Asst. Director of Educational Services, of Lincoln Intermediate Unit, has thoroughly reviewed the materials on the platform. “Now that students and teachers in Pennsylvania’s third through eighth grades will spend 20 percent less time on statewide testing, TEAMology will help teachers do more of what they entered teaching to do in the first place – focus on kids rather than tests. For administrators, it helps get a jump start on Chapter 339 and the Future Ready Index mandates that take effect in the fall of 2018.”

    In early 2016, TEAMology began to see interest from school districts grow rapidly. “All this hard work and development was paying off,” Linsey said. TEAMology began to research would it would take to build a cloud-based home for all of the character material so teachers would have easier access. As the program was taking hold in schools, TEAMology wanted the materials to be accessible to all teachers. Linsey pushed, “Not only easy access, we went much further. Teachers are collaborating and helping build the materials to be even stronger.  I understand what it means to be in the trenches, and what support and sharing best practices can mean from my peers.” The platform launched in July and early going is encouraging as over 1,000 teachers are onboarded, using the material, offering their help and collaborating with one another.  Jen Lowe from Stafford Township SD has been using the material for over six years.  “I can tell you it is worthwhile.  Bullying is basically gone, and I have a better handle on my students’ emotions and how to handle them.  It’s techniques we weren’t taught in school,” said Jen. Chris Schmidt says, “Now that the materials are in the cloud, more teachers joining will make the program stronger.”

    According to Lindsay Read, manager of research at CASEL (and yes it’s an acronym) Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning, “As more programs are being taken up (SEL) in schools and districts, there becomes this greater demand to assess them, to see if they’re working, to see if students are, in fact, learning the skills that are being  taught.”

    “Having a well-respected organization such as CASEL research helping to educate and emphasize the importance of SEL, is the type of efforts we need to make SEL a part of a lasting fabric in schools.  The data points we are beginning to collect could become important to CASEL type research efforts,” said Linsey.

    1. Offer to help at home. Not everyone can volunteer in the classroom. Parents work, stay home with younger children, take care of sick or elderly family members, or live too far away to make multiple trips to school. But many teachers have things that can be done at home instead. “I have sorted and stapled piles of papers, cut out materials, done online research and sorted art materials into plastic baggies for a craft project,” says one mother of two. If you can spare even an hour a week, ask your child’s teachers what you can do at home to help with materials for the classroom.

    2. Share good deals. Even if you can’t afford to buy a ton of extra school supplies for the classroom, you can share extra-special deals that you run across. “I make a list of businesses that are offering freebies during Teacher Appreciation Week and give them to my kids’ teachers,” says one mom. “It doesn’t cost me anything and they love knowing about places like Chipotle and Chick-fil-A that offer freebies or BOGO deals.” Sites like Donors Choose and Fund My Classroom let teachers in high-needs communities post requests for financial assistance for specific projects, equipment, field trips and events. “I would donate $25 and then use a promo code I’d find online to get a matching the donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, so the teacher would instead get $50 toward her project,” says another mom. “Then I’d share the code with the teacher and other parents, so any parent in the class who donated funds could double their money.”

    3. Donate supplies. Time magazine reports that teachers spent, on average, $500 of their own money on classroom supplies. If you have contacts at stores or large companies, ask if they can donate supplies. (Some schools will even supply you with their tax ID number in order for the company to get a write-off.) You can also check yard sales and thrift shops to pick up cheap deals, or ask the teacher to create a list of classroom “needs” and “wants” that you can offer to copy and share with other parents.

    PS DANCE!, an inspirational film about dance education in New York City public schools, has been nominated for a New York Emmy in the Documentary category. The New York Emmy Awards will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

    PS DANCE! showcases the profound effects of consistent and sequential dance education programs in five NYC public schools. It debuted on public television on THIRTEEN/WNET, WLIW21 and NJTV in May 2015 and has been broadcast on public television channels across the nation.

    PS DANCE!, an inspirational film about dance education in New York City public schools, has been nominated for a New York Emmy in the Documentary category. The New York Emmy Awards will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

    PS DANCE! showcases the profound effects of consistent and sequential dance education programs in five NYC public schools. It debuted on public television on THIRTEEN/WNET, WLIW21 and NJTV in May 2015 and has been broadcast on public television channels across the nation including stations in Denver, Tampa, Rochester, Miami, Boston, Albany, Orlando, Detroit, San Francisco, Phoenix, Cleveland, New York and New Jersey.

    After the initial broadcast, the full film became available for online viewing at http://www.thirteen.org/programs/thirteen-specials/ps-dance. PS DANCE! was a featured screening at Dance Films Association’s 2016 Dance on Camera Festival and has been discussed on panels during Dance/NYC’s 2016 Symposium, the 2015 National Dance Education Organization conference, and more.

    Hosted by veteran TV journalist Paula Zahn and filmed in the classrooms of five NYC public school full-time certified dance educators, this film reveals the impact that dance instruction has on students’ aesthetic, artistic and expressive development. While every child is born with the innate inclination to create, imagine and dance, PS DANCE! highlights how the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Dance, PreK-12, supports dance teachers in developing these qualities. The Blueprint, used by dance teachers citywide, frames this documentary created by Executive Producer Jody Gottfried Arnhold, Director and Producer Nel Shelby, and Dance Education Consultant Joan Finkelstein. The film was developed in collaboration with the NYC Department of Education Office of Arts and Special Projects.

    The documentary captures a typical day in the classrooms of five extraordinary master dance educators: Catherine Gallant (Pre-K-5), Battery Park City’s P.S. 89; Ana Nery Fragoso (K-5), the current NYCDOE Director of Dance, P.S 315 in Midwood; Michael Kerr (6-8), Brooklyn’s New Voices School of Academic & Creative Arts; Patricia Dye (9-12), Science Skills Center High School for Science, Technology and the Creative Arts in Downtown Brooklyn; and Ani Udovicki (9-12), Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, in Long Island City.

    After the film’s release, Arnhold, Shelby and Finkelstein launched an organization with the mission: Dance for Every Child. Dance education enthusiasts can submit their details at psdancenyc.com and join in advocating for more dance in schools. The movement will empower implementation of quality dance programs in schools across the nation.

    PS DANCE! is available on DVD distributed by First Run Features and for rent or purchase on Vimeo. All proceeds from the sale of the film will go to The Fund for Public Schools for dance education programs in NYC Public Schools.

    ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

    Jody Gottfried Arnhold is a passionate dance advocate and educator. She taught dance in NYC public schools for over twenty years, founded Dance Education Laboratory 92Y (DEL), supports the dance program at NYC Dept. of Education, created the Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program at Hunter College, and supported and mentored countless dance teachers many of whom now lead the field. She champions and supports NYC dance companies including Ballet Hispanico where she is Honorary Chair. Arnhold serves on the Board at 92Y, Harkness Foundation for Dance, Hunter College, Chairs Hunter’s Dance Advisory Committee, and is on Dance/NYC’s Advisory Committee. She has received the National Dance Education Organization’s Visionary Award, Teachers College Distinguished Alumni Award, the New York State Dance Education Association 2015 Outstanding Leadership Award, Dance Films Association’s 2016 Dance in Focus Award, and was honored by the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable and Lincoln Center Education for her commitment to dance education. She holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and M.A. in Dance Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and is a Certified Movement Analyst. Arnhold continues these efforts as the Executive Producer of the NY Emmy nominated documentary, PS DANCE!, to raise awareness and advocate for her mission Dance for Every Child. It is not just a movie. It is a movement – and Arnhold leads it!

    Nel Shelby, Director and Producer of PS DANCE! and founder and principal at dance film production company Nel Shelby Productions, is deeply dedicated to the preservation and promotion of dance through documentation of live performance, creative video marketing and original filmmaking. Her NYC-based video production company, Nel Shelby Productions, has grown to encompass a long and diverse list of dance clients, and her team has filmed performances at venues throughout the greater New York area and beyond. Shelby serves as Festival Videographer for the internationally celebrated Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival each summer and is also Resident Videographer at the Vail International Dance Festival. Her longer-form, half-hour documentary on Vail’s festival, The Altitude of Dance, debuted on Rocky Mountain PBS in May 2013. In 2016, she will have a premiere screening of a new half-hour dance documentary featuring Nejla Y. Yatkin that she filmed in Central America in 2010. Shelby created four short films for Wendy Whelan’s Restless Creature, and she collaborated with Adam Barruch Dance on a short film titled “Folie a Deux,” which was selected and screened at the Dance on Camera Festival in New York City and San Francisco Dance Film Festival. She has a long personal history with movement – in addition to her degree in broadcast video, she holds a B.F.A. in dance and is a certified Pilates instructor.

    Joan Finkelstein, Dance Education Consultant for PS DANCE! and Executive Director of the Harkness Foundation for Dance, performed professionally in modern, ballet and Afro-Caribbean dance companies and in RAGS on Broadway, choreographed for the Atlanta Ballet and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, and has taught children and adults across the nation. She directed the 92Y Harkness Dance Center from 1992-2004, overseeing classes, the 92Y Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) teacher-training program, performances, workshops, lectures, and social dances. As Director of Dance for the New York City Department of Education from 2004-2014, she spearheaded the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Dance PreK-12 and ongoing professional development for dance teachers. A member of the Dance Writing Task Force that created the new National Core Arts Standards in Dance, she received the National Dance Education Organization’s 2009 Leadership Award and the New York State Dance Education Association’s 2014 Outstanding Leadership Award. Finkelstein holds a BFA (Dance Performance) and MFA (Choreography) from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
