A former teacher and her assistant have been arrested after video revealed students with disabilities were being assaulted, according to police in North Carolina.

The investigation began in October and involves children attending Troutman Elementary School in Troutman, police said in a Nov. 25 release. Troutman is about a 35-mile drive north from uptown Charlotte.

“The School Resource Officer at Troutman Elementary School received a report of a possible assault involving a teacher assigned to exceptional students,” police said.

“The Troutman Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit was later contacted by Iredell-Statesville Schools with concerns about additional incidents. Detectives reviewed more than 100 hours of classroom video and identified 13 additional assaults.”

Teacher Kassidy Ross, 23, was arrested and faces charges of with assault on an individual with disabilities, police said. She has been suspended from duties at the school, officials said.

A series of arrest warrants describe incidents involving at least three children, one “grabbed multiple times” and struck with an open hand, another “yanked to the ground multiple times” and hit on the head with an open hand, and a third grabbed by the hair and pulled into a chair.

Video evidence also indicated “one assault committed by a teacher assistant, Juanita Nesbit,” police said. Nesbit was also arrested and charged, officials said.

Police did not reveal how many students were involved in the investigation.

Troutman Elementary has a student population of just under 800 in Pre-K through 5, according to USnews.com.

“We thank the administrative staff at Troutman Elementary School for promptly reporting this incident to law enforcement as soon as they received the information,” police said.

A teacher at Mansfield ISD’s Legacy High School was arrested and charged with multiple child sex crimes, WFAA-TV reported.

Science teacher Jared Young, 33, is charged with possession and transmission of child pornography, sexual assault of a child and improper relationship with a student, according to a letter Mansfield ISD sent to parents.

Alvarado police contacted the school district to notify officials of the allegations against Young, WFAA reported.

Young was placed on administrative leave and then fired before being arrested, officials said. None of the alleged crimes involves Mansfield ISD students, according to the district.

Young previously worked as a special education teacher’s aide at Legacy High School during the 2021-2022 school year, officials said. The district will contact parents of any students Young may have had contact with during that time.

“As educators entrusted with the safety and well-being of the students in our care each day, nothing is more upsetting than learning of allegations like those facing Mr. Young,” the district said in a statement to WFAA. “We are thankful these charges do not involve our students. Nevertheless, this inexcusable behavior will not be tolerated in Mansfield ISD, and we have already begun the process to terminate Mr. Young’s employment with us.”

Neither Mansfield ISD nor Alvarado police could be immediately reached for comment Friday.
