  • Who won the NYC marathon? 2025 winners, times and results so far

    The 2025 TCS New York City Marathon is well underway as more than 50,000 people from around the world are traversing the five boroughs on foot today. 

    Here’s a look at the winners as runners complete the 26.2-mile course from the Staten Island starting line to the finish line in Central Park.

    Who won the 2025 NYC Marathon?

    Hellen Obiri of Kenya won the 2025 New York City Marathon professional women’s race on Sunday in a record 2 hours, 19 minutes and 51 seconds, just 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Sharon Lokedi. 

    Benson Kipruto, also from Kenya, won the professional men’s race by less than one second. Kipruto crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 9 seconds. Alexander Mutiso was the runner-up.

    American Susannah Scaroni captured her third women’s wheelchair championship, and second in a row. Scaroni finished the course in 1 hour, 42 minutes and 10 second, shaving almost six minutes off her 2024 time. 

    Marcel Hug won the men’s wheelchair race, with a finish time of 1 hour, 30 minutes and 16 seconds. Hug reclaimed the championship after his three-year winning streak was snapped last year.

    The first wave took off at around 8 a.m., with the final wave of runners set to start at 11:30 a.m. Most are expected to finish between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

    How do winning times for 2025 compare to past races?

    Last year, Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won the women’s race with a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 35 seconds. It was her first time running the NYC Marathon. 

    Adbi Nageeye of the Netherlands won the 2024 men’s race, coming in at 2 hours, 7 minutes and 39 seconds. He crossed the finish line just six seconds before 2022’s champion Evans Chebet.

    Last year also marked the first time Americans won the men’s and women’s wheelchair races. Daniel Romanchuck captured the men’s championship in 1 hour, 36 minutes and 31 seconds. Scaroni took the women’s championship in 1 hour, 48 minutes and 5 seconds.

  • Thousands of runners race Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K ahead of TCS Marathon

    NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — Thousands of runners geared up to kick off the TCS New York City Marathon in the Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K.

    On Saturday morning, nearly 10,000 runners of all ages participated in the race to Central Park.

    Participants started on Manhattan’s east side near the United Nations and raced through Midtown Manhattan to the TCS NYC Marathon finish line in Central Park.

    The Abbott Dash is one of 60 adult and youth races produced bylocalnonprofit New York Road Runners.

    The race was headlined by the USATF 5K Championships, with 2023 runner-up Ahmed Muhumed and 2023 champion Annie Rodenfels capturing this year’s titles.

    New York City marathon winners in the men’s and women’s divisions will each earn six figures for outpacing their competitors in the 26.2-mile race on Sunday. 

    First-place male and female runners in the “Open Division,” which comprises professional and invited athletes only, will take home $100,000 in prize money, according to New York Road Runners, the nonprofit that organizes the annual marathon.

    Second-place athletes in each division will earn $60,000. There are also payouts for men and women who finish in the top 10 of their respective categories, based on the order in which they cross the finish line. The prize money for top finishers:

    • 3rd place: $40,000
    • 4th place: $25,000
    • 5th place: $15,000
    • 6th place: $10,000
    • 7th place: $7,500
    • 8th place: $5,000
    • 9th place: $2,500
    • 10th place: $2,000

    Additional rewards of $50,000 are paid out to runners who break existing course records. 

    Separately, the top American racers in both the men’s and women’s divisions will also receive cash awards in the following amounts:

    • 1st place: $25,000
    • 2nd place: $15,000
    • 3rd place: $10,000
    • 4th place: $5,000
    • 5th place: $3,000

    So-called “Masters,” or professional runners ages 40 and up who compete in the “Open Division” are also eligible for prize money based on their finishing times. 

    First- and second-place runners earn $3,000; third-place runners get $1,000 each.

    Professional wheelchair athletes also take home cash if they finish within the top six of their division. First-place athletes in the wheelchair division get $35,000 each and are eligible for a $50,000 bonus if they break the course record. 

    In addition to doling out cash rewards, the New York City Marathon raises millions annually from tens of thousands of runners who compete on behalf of charities in exchange for entry in the race. 

    Since 2006, the event has raised $520 million for charity, according to New York Road Runners.
