    Giving listeners a taste of something that diverges from the (initially) ballad-y sound of Guts’ lead single, “vampire,” Olivia Rodrigo opts for a more “brutal”-esque tone on her second offering from the record, “bad idea right?” A release pattern that matches what she did with Sour by presenting “deja vu” after the slow, bemoaning jam that is “drivers license.” “good 4 u” and “brutal” would then further establish her knack for “angst you can dance to.”

    The same goes for “bad idea right?,” which is similar to “brutal” in that both songs are “upbeat” while being filled with self-doubt and self-contempt. In this way, Rodrigo confirms more than ever that she’s a Pisces with her back-and-forth waffling about hooking up with an ex during a drunken night of folly. And yes, as a Pisces, of course she’s going to opt for the more self-destructive route. As for the title, if it sounds rather familiar, perhaps you’ll recognize (most of) it from another water sign’s oeuvre. Specifically, Ariana Grande’s thank u, next record, which places “bad idea” at track six. Bearing sentiments that are akin to Rodrigo’s on “bad idea right?,” Grande has her own “fuck it” attitude when she sings, “I got a bad idea/Yeah, I’ma call you over here to numb the pain” and “Yeah, I know we shouldn’t, baby, but we will (you know we will)/Need somebody, gimme something I can feel/But, boy, don’t trip/You know this isn’t real/You should know I’m temporary.” 

    Rodrigo also wants to get that intention across with the many caveats she spreads throughout her own sonically delivered bad idea. So it is that she lies to herself, “Yes, I know that he’s my ex/But can’t two people reconnect?/I only see him as a friend/The biggest lie I ever said.” Elsewhere adding an “Oops!…I Did It Again” sort of flourish with, “I just tripped and fell into his bed.” The notion of lying/being a liar in this particular song for once applies to Rodrigo instead of the erstwhile object of her affection. Case in point, her accusation in “traitor,” which opens with, “Brown guilty eyes and little white lies.” Or the one in “vampire” that goes, “How do you lie without flinching?/(How do you lie, how do you lie, how do you lie?).” The point being that Rodrigo is fine with lies in “bad idea right?” so long as they only involve the ones she tells herself in order to engage in some “guilty pleasure” sex with an ex. 

    As for the video (once again directed by Petra Collins) to get that message across, it commences with the roll of thunder outside a house where a party is already in full swing (because despite moving to New York, Rodrigo can’t shake the California tradition of house parties). And as Rodrigo primps in the bathroom mirror with her friends (the ones [played by Madison Hu, Tate McRae and Iris Apatow] she’ll later tell she “was asleep/But I never said where or in whose sheets”), she gets a call from someone in her phone labeled as, “LOSER NOT WORTH MENTIONING.” Which is far more “bespoke” than “DO NOT ANSWER.” While the party rages on outside the bathroom, Rodrigo, outfitted in a baby blue angora sweater, a silver sequined mini skirt and a heart choker, does her best imitation of Liv Tyler as Corey Mason in Empire Records (perhaps naturally assuming that members of her birth cohort won’t be able to make that connection, therefore claiming it as her own). 

    But that’s not the only pop culture icon Rodrigo is “giving” as she continues down the path of emulation for “bad idea right?” There’s also many shades of Katy Perry’s 2019 single, “Never Really Over,” during which she also finds plenty of ways to justify getting back together with an ex (albeit in a far more relationship-y way than what Rodrigo wants to do on “bad idea right?”). This includes Perry chirpily singing, “Oh, we were such a mess, but wasn’t it the best?/Thought it was done, but I guess it’s never really over.” Before this part of the chorus, she already mirrors Rodrigo’s self-flagellating attitude in the first and second verses: “I’m losing my self control/Yeah, you’re starting to trickle back in/But I don’t wanna fall down the rabbit hole/Cross my heart, I won’t do it again/I tell myself, tell myself, tell myself, ‘Draw the line’/And I do, I do/But once in a while I trip up, and I cross the line/And I think of you.” 

    Rodrigo does more than just “think” in “bad idea right?”—she takes action. Ergo, letting herself be pulled, like a Pisces on a reel, right back up to her ex’s apartment. However, this doesn’t occur until after much more internal deliberation and much more alcohol consumption (“I’m out right now and I’m all fucked up”). Then, after a bit of crowd surfing, she gathers the courage to stow away in the back of a truck while it’s still pouring down rain. As if that weren’t already enough of a testament to her commitment to getting some hard (or at least semi-soft) dick, when the driver ends up with car trouble, she then gets on a bus that’s seemingly filled with several other people who also think it’s a bad idea (right?) to go see their own exes. Or maybe they just think it’s a bad idea for Rodrigo to go see hers. 

    Either way, the fact that “bad idea right?” has been released right after the accusatory/never-speaking-to-you-again “vampire” just goes to show how indecisive a girl can be when a fuckboy is involved (or girl, since many fans have speculated that “vampire” is actually about Taylor Swift—which would be a very “Bad Blood” maneuver). This, too, being evident in Taylor Swift’s 2012 hit, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Another track that was inspired by the main “muse” of Red: Jake Gyllenhaal. And although Swift is adamant that she is “never ever ever getting back together” with said ex, it took her a long time to get to that point. Likely succumbing to the same temptations that Rodrigo speaks to in “bad idea right?” Something Swift alludes to in the first verse with the lines, “I remember when we broke up the first time/Saying, ‘This is it, I’ve had enough,’ ‘cause like/We hadn’t seen each other in a month/When you said you needed space (What?)/Then you come around again and say, ‘Baby, I miss you and I swear I’m gonna change, trust me’/Remember how that lasted for a day?/I say, ‘I hate you,’ we break up, you call me, ‘I love you.’” In Rodrigo’s case, it’s less “I love you” and more “I wanna fuck you.” Call it the increasing jadedness of each succeeding generation (but on the plus side, at least someone from Gen Z is expressing a desire to fuck at all). 

    Finally arriving at his apartment (on the second floor, a detail she notes very strategically) for her dick appointment, Rodrigo peels off her baby blue sweater (miraculously free of any signs of the slushy that got spilled all over her while she was on the bus) to show off a white tank top that will get optimally wet in the rain just in time for when he answers the door. Except that he’s too busy being a literal firework (another nod to Katy Perry?) in the bedroom (as “good 4 u” told us, Rodrigo has a thing for fiery bedrooms). Despite his ostensible inability to answer the door, Rodrigo makes it inside regardless and lies down next to “him.” Or rather, “it.” Because “he’s” actually  nothing more than some arcane form of light energy radiating those damn fireworks (again, this is a very Pisces way to portray things).

    As he goes up in smoke next to her, Rodrigo notices an errant spider crawling near her on the pillow. And yes, the symbolism of a spider—a creature that lures its prey into the web—is not lost on the viewer. Sketched out and appalled, this seems to serve as the sobering wake-up call she needs to reassess her bad idea in favor of a good one. Or so we’d like to believe. Just as we’d like to believe the same of ourselves. That we’re not some weak, frivolous little bia giving in to temptation as readily as Eve. Who didn’t even have the excuse of being drunk for her whimsical decision.

    We are officially approaching the middle of August already. How is the summer flying by that fast that it feels like every week I’m discussing a new season approaching? Taylor Swift was right, August does really slip away like a bottle of wine.


    But that’s not stopping me from coming up with a fresh batch of new tunes to get you through the weekend…and the rest of the week until we inevitably reach another Weekend Playlist article. But enough stressing about the future and the impending cold weather, let’s focus on the now.

    This week, I am feeling so excited to share this playlist with my dear, devout readers. If you’re looking for new music released on or around August 11, 2023, I’ve got you covered! We have songs from Olivia Rodrigo, Claire Rosinkranz, and much more! Let’s get listening.

    Olivia Rodrigo – “bad idea right?” 

    Queen of pop rock fusion, Olivia Rodrigo is back with the second single from her upcoming sophomore album GUTS. Starting off strong with potentially-Zack-Bia-inspired-breakup ballad, “Vampire”, fans are eager to hear the followup. “bad idea right?” will be accompanied by a Rodrigo bestie-laden video, starring Iris Apatow, Tate McRae, and Madison Hu.

    GUTS, out September 8, is Olivia’s response to the flawless, GRAMMY-award winning debut album, SOUR. We already know she has the ability to sing and songwrite, and most certainly isn’t a one hit wonder. It’s one of the most anticipated albums of the year, and “bad idea right” is just another taste.

    Claire Rosinkranz – “Pools & Palm Trees” 

    Southern California native Claire Rosinkranz shot into the public eye with her ability to make fun, heartfelt music that she creates herself, soundtracked by multiple instruments she also knows how to use. The mega-talent is now releasing “Pools & Palm Trees”, a summery, acoustic tune about missing someone. It’s the perfect song to wind down the summer with, all about yearning.

    The song is classic Claire – sunny, reminiscent of endless summer. “Pools & Palm Trees” comes ahead of Rosinkranz’ highly anticipated debut album, Just Because. With critically acclaimed singles like “Screw Time” and “Sad in Hawaii”, plus a collab with Louis The Child on “Walls”, Rosinkranz is a dynamo to watch in the music industry.

    JP Saxe – “Caught Up On You” 

    It’s a big end of the year for JP Saxe, who has created real tracks and whose voice works well alongside any collaboration. He’s looking forward to touring with John Mayer as his opener, and is building up to his sophomore album, A Grey Area, starting with this new single. “Caught Up on You” is a sign of Saxe’s growth as an artist, it’s complex and honest with catchy bridges and a soothing chorus.

    The song is quirky, not his normal heart-wrenching ballad that makes you want to sob for all the right reasons…and yet, you can tell JP Saxe stayed true to himself throughout. It’s a fun start to the playlist, and a song you’ll crave to hear again.

    “I completely turned off my filter and wrote nine of the weirdest verses I’ve ever written and picked my favorite four,” Saxe says of writing “Caught Up On You.” “It was a way to clear the pipes creatively, but I ended up being obsessed with the song. It was genuinely fun. It’s still my favorite song on the record. When you’re used to talking about heavy and emotional shit and you write a song about kinks and communism, it’s a nice little break.”

    DROELOE ft. Transviolet – “Downside Up” 

    DROELOE is gearing up to release his album The Art of Change on September 15, and with four solid singles including the most recent, “Downside Up ft. Transviolet”, you won’t want to miss it. Following his album release, there will be a headline tour and are looking forward to joining San Holo at select shows. “Downside Up” starts slow and soft, building up to high emotion and big sounds. It’s a poetic song with equal talent in production and singing.

    ‘We were very much in sync with what we wanted to say with the song, and the catharsis that we wanted to convey with it. It was an awesome experience turning that story into such a powerful poetic metaphor’

    DJ Khaled ft. Lil Baby, Future, Lil Uzi Vert – “SUPPOSED TO BE LOVED” 

    With a classic sampling and remix of Michael Jackson’s hit “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”, let Lil Baby, Future, and Lil Uzi tell you how you’re supposed to be loved. A fun, summertime track that just makes you want to dance on a yacht with your friends, it’s a song reminiscent of the 2016 era of music. It’s Khaled’s classic ability to produce something that can be played over and over again.

    Tracks with this level of star caliber can go one way or the other – work seamlessly, or it can force together three different sounds and sound messy. This one works.

    Meghan Markle may be having a blast at home in Los Angeles by taking in a Taylor Swift show while Prince Harry is abroad for charity engagements, but it looks like the prince is having some fun of his own.

    After speaking at the International Sports Promotion Society Sports Values Summit in Tokyo Wednesday, Harry hit the mall with his friend Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras to browse for souvenirs to bring back home. Any potential jet lag, scientists say, is no match for a strong enough case of the shoppies.

    Figueras, who is set to play alongside Harry in a charity polo match in Singapore this weekend, shared a photo on Instagram of himself and his princely pal, coordinating in aviator sunglasses and donning mock-serious facial expressions and crossed arms. It’s giving Royal Blue Steel, if you will.

    “Shopping for our wives,” Figueras captioned the photo, before thanking Tokyo “for your generous hospitality and kindness towards us. And of course, for your continued support of @sentebale!”

    Sentebale is the charity co-founded by Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006, with the goal of helping impoverished children in Africa who have been impacted by HIV/AIDS and COVID-19, among other public health crises. The polo match this weekend is a recurring fundraiser for the organization, and Harry typically participates.

    Markle recently celebrated her 42nd birthday, and was spotted at Swift’s concert dancing to “You Belong With Me.” Lest we worry that she’s having all the fun, Harry told conference-goers at his speaking engagement that he’d had “an incredible Kobe steak” that night.

    As an American mother of two children under the age of five, Meghan Markle had plenty of reasons not to join her husband Prince Harry on his trip across the Pacific to play in a charity polo match. But on Tuesday night, it became clear that she had a really good excuse for staying behind. 

    This week, Taylor Swift brought her Eras Tour to Los Angeles’s So-Fi Stadium, and according to Page Six, Meghan was spotted in the audience alongside her friend Lucy Fraser. People reports that during the Fearless portion of the show, when Swift said “Let’s go back to high school,” the duchess jumped out of her seat and danced to “You Belong With Me.”

    Though Meghan hasn’t spoken publicly about any latent Swift fandom, she is a big fan of music, and was spotted at a Jack Johnson concert earlier this year. In June, The Wall Street Journal reported that Meghan had invited Swift to appear on her podcast Archetypes with a handwritten note, but the singer declined. But Meghan’s apparent enthusiasm at the concert Tuesday implies that there are no hard feelings on her behalf.

    The concert took place four days after the duchess celebrated her 42nd birthday. In preparation for the ISPS Handa Polo Cup game in Singapore this weekend, Harry and his pal Nacho Figueras touched down in Tokyo on Tuesday. He later told a crowd at a panel discussion that he enjoyed “an incredible Kobe steak” that night. Just because Meghan wasn’t on the trip does not mean she was forgotten. On his Instagram, Figueras posted a photo of him and Harry trying on sunglasses in a Tokyo store with the caption, “Shopping for our wives,” and a sunglasses emoji.

    Wednesday night, the much-anticipated announcement of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) album rerecord at Taylor Swift’s final North America date (for now) of the Eras Tour was impossible to miss: Even some aircraft passengers were treated to the breaking news announcement, as SoFi Stadium lit up its roof with the album’s title. Sometimes the friendly skies are also incredibly informative, in addition to being genial.

    While that (inevitable—honestly even the most amateur numerologist could have spotted the link between that 8/9 concert date and 1989 announcement) news was unmissable, another seismic Swiftian event might have flown under the radar, if not for eagle-eyed fans: Karlie Kloss, a former Swift bestie and #Squad member who was notably not on the “Look What You Made Me Do” T-shirt (a moment so historic that the Library of Congress should have it on file), took in the concert. And friends, she was not in the VIP bunker. Klossy was in the stadium with the normies. The normies! (Those normies include noted Meghan Markle pal and designer Misha Nonoo and fellow model Marianne Fonseca, who joined Kloss in those way-high-up seats.)

    We have so many questions: Did Taylor know she was coming? Was Karlie trying to be incognito, or did she have to buy a ticket? Did she buy resale, or did she hit that “best available seat, verified fan” jackpot way back in the day? Is there…bad blood? And how was Adam Sandler, decked out in his pastel Lover best, able to score a spot in what looks to be the VIP zone at the concert? The Sandman!

    To put it in terms that Swifties can understand, in this scenario, Adam Sandler is the cheer captain and Karlie Kloss is on the bleachers. It is unclear if what Taylor has been looking for has, in fact, been here the whole time.

    Kloss and Swift were spotted together from 2013 to 2019 after first appearing together at Swift’s performance at the 2013 Victoria’s Secret runway show. Swift even gushed about Kloss having a designated bedroom at Swift’s Tribeca apartment. According to Page Six, that room was at the center of the two’s falling out (though both their representatives have denied this), with sources telling the outlet that Swift felt Kloss took advantage of her hospitality. Swift did not attend either of Kloss’s 2018 and 2019 wedding celebrations when she wed Josh Kushner, though she was reportedly invited and at the time Kloss’s representative said Taylor was unable to attend due to prior commitments. 

    Preorders for Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) have soared in the hours since the announcement of its October 27 release—exactly nine years after the first version of the album dropped, part of Swift’s mission to rerecord and rerelease her first six albums. Under her previous record deal, Swift did not own the masters to her own songs. All of the “Taylor’s version” rerecorded masters, and the masters for Lover and later albums, are owned by Swift, allowing her not only to profit financially from the songs, but increasing her control over how the new recordings are licensed and used. Previously, a group of investors fronted by exec Scooter Braun purchased the original masters, and they’ve since been sold to a private equity firm. Swift released Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) earlier this summer, and after 1989, only Reputation and Taylor Swift (often referred to by fans as Debut) remain in the project.

    “Since I was a teenager, I wanted to own my music,” Swift said onstage in LA while announcing the latest rerelease. “The way to do it was to rerecord my albums, and the way that you have embraced…that you have celebrated, that you really decided that it was your fight too, and that you were one hundred percent behind me…I will never stop thanking you for that.” Later in the show, she appeared to get emotional, dabbing her eyes, when her piano-backed performance of “Champagne Problems” garnered an eight-minute-long standing ovation.

    Taylor Swift is continuing to fulfil her fans’ Wildest Dreams — this time with an announcement that a re-release of her album 1989 is on the way.

    On Wednesday, during her final performance at California’s SoFi Stadium as part of her Eras Tour, Swift announced she would be releasing the highly anticipated 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

    The re-recorded album will be released on Oct. 27, the same date 1989 was originally released in 2014. The new album will include five previously unreleased tracks.

    Swift, 33, made the announcement during the surprise song portion of her show, a fan-favourite segment that sees the Grammy-winning singer perform two numbers not previously included in her setlist.

    Swift told her screaming fans that she wanted to share something she’s been planning for a long time.

    “I think instead of just telling you about it, I think I’ll just sort of show you,” Swift said as she revealed the new album art for 1989 (Taylor’s Version). 

    As expected, the Swifties in Los Angeles launched into raucous cheering.

    Swift then performed a rendition of New Romantics from the album 1989.

    On social media, the singer confirmed the news and posted a photo of the album.

    “The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th,” Swift wrote. “To be perfectly honest, this is my most FAVORITE re-record I’ve ever done because the 5 From The Vault tracks are so insane. I can’t believe they were ever left behind. But not for long!”

    The announcement was also projected onto the top of the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

    The 1989 album included some of Swift’s most popular songs like Shake It Off and Blank Space.

    1989 (Taylor’s Version) is the fourth of six albums Swift will be re-recording after a dispute with music mogul Scooter Braun and her ex-record label. The feud arose in 2019 after it was revealed Swift did not own the master recordings of her older albums. Swift has already re-recorded and released Fearless (Taylor’s Version) (2021), Red (Taylor’s Version) (2021) and Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) (2023).

    Every Taylor’s Version album has included new album artwork, unreleased songs “from The Vault” and new music videos inspired by the album’s original era.

    Eagle-eyed Swift fans expected that 1989 would be the next album to get a revamp. Last month, when she released her music video for her new song I Can See You, an unreleased from Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), fans noticed a sign at the video’s end that reads “1989TV.”

    As part of her ever-popular Eras Tour, Swift also changed her stage outfits from purple to blue on Wednesday — blue is associated with 1989, while purple coincides with the theming of Speak Now.

    Swift is currently on tour, and many fans are clamouring for a ticket to her show. Canadian fans still have chances to score a ticket to her six upcoming Toronto concerts — though competition is fierce.

    The Nov. 16, 2024 show will go on sale at 11 a.m. ET and the Nov. 21, 2024 date will be up for grabs at 1 p.m. ET.

    Swift has played “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “22,” and “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” from “Red” at each of her shows so far. She also brought out Phoebe Bridgers to play “Nothing New” from “Red (Taylor’s Version)” in Nashville on May 5 and 6, and she and Bridgers performed the show every night that Bridgers opened in May.

    Swift also surprised fans with “State of Grace” on March 18 in Glendale, AZ; “Sad Beautiful Tragic” on March 31 in Arlington, TX; “The Lucky One” on April 2, also in Arlington; and “Treacherous” on April 13 in Tampa, FL. She then brought out “Begin Again” in Houston on April 23 and played “I Bet You Think About Me” in Atlanta on April 30.

    On May 12, she took a special request from her guest performer Bridgers and performed “Come Back… Be Here” during her Philadelphia show. Then on May 19, in Foxborough, MA, she pulled a song from the vault and performed “Better Man” from “Red (Taylor’s Version).”

    After her piano was damaged due to rain exposure, Swift performed “Red” on her guitar during the May 21 show in Foxborough. A few days later, on May 26 in East Rutherford, NJ, she surprised the crowd with “Holy Ground.”

    In June, Swift performed quite a few “Red” songs during the surprise portion of the show.     Taylor Swift fans will have another chance Thursday to score prized tickets to see the pop star perform in Toronto next year.

    The Nov. 16, 2024 show will go on sale at 11 a.m. ET and the Nov. 21, 2024 date will be up for grabs at 1 p.m. ET.

    Ticketmaster is staggering ticket presales for six shows at the Rogers Centre over three days to avoid online technical issues Swift fans may have encountered for past shows.

    Buyers must have already registered for and received a “verified fan” sale code in order to get in the virtual queue for the tickets.

    The first day of ticket sales on Wednesday was marked by celebration and disappointment, as some fans scored seats for the first two nights of Swift’s stop in Toronto while others were wait-listed.

    The only Canadian stop on Swift’s global Eras Tour is expected to draw fans from all over the country and beyond, and give Toronto’s economy a boost next fall.

    Taylor Swift fans screamed in unison as she announced the upcoming release of “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” on Wednesday.

    The singer-songwriter, in a “style” she’s used in the past, unveiled the album’s artwork and Oct. 27 release date on a massive screen as she wrapped up the first U.S. leg of The Eras Tour at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium on Wednesday.

    “There’s something that I’ve been planning for a really, really, really ridiculously embarrassingly long time,” she told the football stadium full of Swifties.

    “And I think instead of just telling you about it, I think I’ll just sort of show you something I’ve been excited to show you.”

    Swift later shared more about the “surprise” release on X (Twitter’s rebrand).

    “The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th,” she wrote.

    “To be perfectly honest, this is my most FAVORITE re-record I’ve ever done because the 5 From The Vault tracks are so insane. I can’t believe they were ever left behind. But not for long!”

    The album is set to include five previously-unreleased tracks while physical versions of the album promise to include never-before-seen photos, according to Swift’s website.

    “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” will mark the singer-songwriter’s fourth re-recorded album and will arrive exactly nine years since the original release of “1989,” which won the Grammy Award for “Album of the Year” in 2016.

    Fans also noted that the singer-songwriter’s announcement came eight years, nine months and 13 days after the release of “1989.”

    Swift made subtle nods to the original album on a number of occasions during her stop at SoFi Stadium.

    Fans’ tour wristbands flashed blue, a color often associated with the album, after her concert ended on Tuesday. And on Wednesday, she wore a blue dress as she performed “Enchanted” and “Long Live.”

    The album will add to her journey in re-recording material from her first six albums, an effort she embarked on to give her control of her masters after Scooter Braun purchased her catalog with his company Ithaca Holdings’ acquisition of Big Machine Records.

    Ithaca sold the masters to Shamrock Holdings in 2020, a move that Swift said would allow Braun to “continue to profit” off her catalog for many years under the terms of the deal.

    The “Taylor’s Version” albums have been massive hits on streaming services in the years since including Swift’s most-recent re-release for “Speak Now.”

    In July, “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day in 2023 before Travis Scott’s “Utopia” took the title late last month.

    The album also became the most-streamed country album in a single day in Spotify history, Billboard noted.

    Ye, Taylor Swift (because Matty Healy), Lizzo, Doja Cat. When it comes to “wanting to believe” a celebrity is merely “putting you on,” the past year has provided no short supply of examples. Nor have the defensive reactions from fans insisting that everyone else deriding their “god” doesn’t know what they’re talking about, or that said “god” is simply “doing an act.” No one better embodies that latter category than Doja Cat. For, as her fans (or what’s left of them) have loved to suggest as a means to cushion the blow of her recent behavior, this entire “thing” she’s doing right now is just part of her “Scarlet persona”—or something. “Scarlet” being the name of the “character” she seems to be portraying. Or rather, an “alter ego,” if you prefer. Either way, fans are latching onto the idea that “she is now playing the role of Scarlet. They are two different characters. In an interview she said she apologized for what would happen later…she also said that she loved us before she got into the role of Scarlet. She doesn’t hate us, but Scarlet does since she’s evil. Doja doesn’t despise us, hate messages are from Scarlet!!!”

    It’s a “grasping at straws” type of reasoning, but one that makes sense considering the post-reality era we’ve been living in since Andy Kaufman’s brand arrived onto the scene. Particularly a 1982 hoax involving pro wrestler Jerry Lawler. Specifically, the time that they battled it out on an episode of The David Letterman Show. With Kaufman already in a neck brace after Lawler supposedly performed the piledriver maneuver on him, Lawler slapped Kaufman during the interview, leading them into another altercation. One that was, as revealed over a decade later, entirely staged. This was the type of “comedy” (or rather, performance art) that not only made Kaufman stand out, but also made him a legend. Mainly for being so committed to his “act” that the truth about it would take years to be unearthed. This also being why many people still speculate that he’ll emerge one day and say his death, too, was a hoax. This “approach” to celebrity would start to catch on not just with other famous people in the twentieth century (see also: Jim Carrey [who, fittingly, portrays Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon] at the 1999 MTV Movie Awards), but even non-famous people as well.

    In other words, those members of the hoi polloi who got the message that “the hoax” was what got people’s attention. And with “reality TV”/daytime talk shows as an increasingly viable medium with which the average joe could secure his fifteen minutes of fame, the opportunities for creating false fanfare were ample. Case in point, a 1998 episode of The Jerry Springer Show (rebranded as part of “Springer Break” for MTV’s illustrious week of spring break programming), during which two roommates named Dave and Matt went on the show with Dave’s girlfriend, Caitlin. When Matt “confesses” he’s been fooling around with Caitlin, Dave goes completely apeshit on him to a level that clearly gets Springer both salivating and scared when the camera flashes to his reaction. In the end, it turned out the trio had bamboozled the talk show host, admitting the drama was completely manufactured. That yes, Dave and Caitlin were boyfriend and girlfriend, but that the affair with Matt was made up for the sake of quality 90s daytime TV. And so, taking into account how “the art of the hoax” and what it could do for germinal forms of virality had already trickled down into the culture of “normals” (a.k.a. non-famous people), its value became apparent to many. Especially as the twenty-first century progressed. 

    That same “hoax-like” quality was also manifest in the comedic stylings of Sacha Baron Cohen, who brought his Borat character from Da Ali G Show to life in an even bigger way in 2006’s Borat (a.k.a. Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan). Interacting with “dyed in the wool” Americans who genuinely believe he’s some “ghastly” foreigner with no knowledge of American life or customs, the gimmick Cohen had in mind—to expose prejudice and racism entrenched in the very fabric of American culture—worked like a charm. Between a Southern frat boy warning Borat to “not let a woman ever ever make you who you are” to a Republican at a Virginia rodeo telling Borat he should shave his mustache to look more like an I-talian instead of a Muslim to a crowd of people at that same rodeo laughing at Borat’s thick accent before he delves into an offensive version the national anthem (“I now will sing our Kazakh national anthem to the tune of your national anthem”), the levels of misogyny, homophobia and xenophobia present in the U.S. are exposed at every turn. And all through the carefully-constructed ruse of a character like Borat. 

    Less careful constructions aren’t always met with being hailed as “brilliant.” For example, in 2008, Joaquin Phoenix ostensibly had a “breakdown” (which was in rather poor taste considering Britney’s real one the same year) after announcing his plans to retire from acting so he could pursue a rap career. The result was a 2010 “documentary” directed by Casey Affleck. Quickly revealed to be a mockumentary, I’m Still Here (not to be confused with Todd Haynes’ impressionistic Bob Dylan biopic, I’m Not There, released three years before) was met with lukewarm reviews, with many critics seeming to feel that it failed as “good performance art.” Plus, it also happened to furnish the film set that would later put Casey Affleck in the spotlight for his sexually harassing tendencies, as well as promoting a work environment that encouraged sexual harassment (à la Lizzo). So really, what “artistic value” did it have apart from being an experimental vanity project?

    The same can be said of whatever Doja Cat is “doing” right now. If, in fact, it’s contrived at all, and not just a desperate bid on fans’ part to validate her behavior (which also says something about the dangers of post-reality existence). This includes going off on their patheticness for saying they “love” her and trying to call themselves shit like “Kittenz” in honor of the way other fan bases have names (e.g., Ariana Grande’s Arianators, Taylor Swift’s Swifties, Charli XCX’s Angels, Kesha’s Animals, Lady Gaga’s Little Monsters, Nicki Minaj’s The Barbz, Beyoncé’s Beyhive, etc.). Doja made it apparent that not only does she think the people focusing their energy on this are total losers, but also that she doesn’t feel she “needs” them at all. At least not anymore. Not now that she has enough money to pursue whatever she wants creatively. Alas, she might quickly come to find that her overhead costs are no longer matching up with what she’s making if a legion of fans aren’t there to support her where it counts: financially. 

    Whether or not this is a “stunt,” some believe Doja Cat is truly immune to public opinion (à la Ye) at this point and that, “No matter how you feel about Doja Cat, it is clear that she is living her life unapologetically right now. While some fans may be freaked out by it, she seems to be happy, which is all that matters.” No one appeared to have that stance about Ye, possibly because it’s as Dave Chappelle said and the one thing you can’t do in Hollywood is speak ill of the Jewish community. Not only “speak ill,” but also go on multiple venomous tirades regarding Jewish stereotypes and conspiracies. Starting with Ye tweeting in late 2022, “I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE.” Apart from misspelling DEFCON, the most glaring aspect of the tweet was Ye’s plea for attention, no matter how negative. An escalating need for it that only amplified as he doubled down on his offensive rhetoric, complete with praising Hitler and dining with Donald Trump and a white nationalist Holocaust denier at Mar-a-Lago. All of this occurred at the end of 2022. As 2023 began, Ye became fodder for awards show hosts (i.e., Jerrod Carmichael) and South Park in between gradually fading into the background. Perhaps he’ll try to reemerge at some point and holler, “Gotcha!” It was all an act. Just like Andy Kaufman. Just like, as fans insist, Doja Cat. 

    It’s the safest bet for coming back from bad behavior, after all. “Haha, just kidding! It was part of my ‘art.’” But, unlike Kaufman and Cohen (who Ye would be likely to point out are both Jewish so it must be some kind of conspiracy), the “performance art” being done now isn’t ironic, nor does it serve as a means to highlight a larger, unpleasant truth about humanity. Instead, the so-called performance art itself has become the larger, unpleasant truth about humanity. Even when people want to praise ultimately annoying actors and musicians, they’ll still dredge up Kaufman (because the devil can cite pop culture scripture for his purpose). For instance, Jennifer Lopez compared Jennifer Coolidge to Kaufman after working with her on Shotgun Wedding, in that you can never really tell if “that’s who she is” or she’s simply always “in character.” To put it another way, if she’s just making money off her natural persona in a similar way that Angus Cloud did with his Fez character (though it always irritated him when people wrote off his talent that way). 

    To further debunk the idea that Doja Cat is just “trolling” everyone (therefore, her behavior is “fine”), musicians who have had alter egos in the past have known better than to “trust the audience” with being able to separate the singer from the alter ego without making it explicit. From David Bowie with Ziggy Stardust to Beyoncé with Sasha Fierce to Madonna with Madame X, these were “characters” that had entire albums constructed around them. Whatever Doja’s forthcoming album turns out to be called, it doesn’t seem like the title is going to be Scarlet. Which might be the only way for her to backpedal on what she’s said and done at this point. And isn’t that what every celeb wants to do once they notice that their “artistic integrity” is affecting their bank account’s bottom line?

    Companies marketing themselves in connection with Taylor Swift’s future swing through Toronto might feel an afterglow that outlives the pop star’s handful of shows in the country — but such brands also face several risks in tying themselves to the hotly-anticipated tour.

    That’s the message marketing experts had as tickets to Swift’s six nights in Toronto next November — backed by Rogers Communications Inc. and Royal Bank of Canada — went on sale Wednesday.

    Telecommunications giant Rogers has been marketing itself as the presenter of Swift’s Toronto stops at the Rogers Centre stadium, while RBC is listed as an official partner and will offer an exclusive allocation of tickets to its Avion members next week.

    “Whether someone would switch bank or card allegiance due to access to a Taylor Swift concert is debatable, but (it) is `eyes on the prize’ and certainly there will be a lot of eyes on this event as we get to November 2024,” said Richard Powers, national academic director of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, in an email.

    The Eras tour, which kicked off in the U.S. in March and will span at least two years, has become one of the most lucrative shows in history.

    Online research company QuestionPro said in June, ahead of Swift’s Toronto announcement, that fans had spent an average US$1,300 per show. About 70 per cent of the 596 people it surveyed said the money was worth it because the experience was so rewarding, while 91 per cent said they’d go again.

    Despite ticket-holders paying more than they budgeted, QuestionPro said the Eras Tour achieved a Net Promoter Score — a metric measuring how likely someone is to recommend a brand or product to a friend — of 68, putting it on par with retailer Costco and tied with tech goliath Apple and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel chain.

    QuestionPro estimated that if the current spending pace continues through the end of the tour, Swift will have generated an estimated US$5 billion in economic impact.

    “These numbers are pretty incredible,” said Dan Fleetwood, QuestionPro’s president of research and insights, in a press release.

    “If Taylor Swift were an economy, she’d be bigger than 50 countries; if she was a corporation, her Net Promoter Score would make her the fourth most admired brand, and her loyalty numbers mimic those of subjects to a royal crown.”

    Such findings likely contributed to a cost-benefit analysis Powers suspects companies completed before getting on board with the tour and devising Swift marketing plans.

    Days before announcing its ticket allocation, RBC opened up the Avion program to Canadians regardless of what company they bank with.

    While the bank has long offered customers an exclusive inventory of tickets to Live Nation Canada shows, the Avion tie-in is more unique.

    “It goes after a different demographic,” said Powers, meaning parents purchasing tickets for their kids.

    “The Avion card targets a higher income demographic that they compete for every day with the other big banks.”

    RBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    For Rogers, the connection may be as much about driving customers as it as it about goodwill. The company is still working to repair its public perception after a daylong outage last summer that garnered international headlines.

    However, Powers said, “Coming off their recent connection problems, this is a feel-good story for them.”

    “Considering the target market — younger fans looking for better priced mobile packages — expect to see other parts to this sponsorship, specifically targeted to that demographic,” he added.

    But Joanne McNeish said that younger demographic will make it harder to capitalize.

    “A common mistake that brands make today is that if you put your name in front of young consumers who can’t currently purchase your product or service they will remember you and purchase at another point in time,” said the associate professor of marketing at Toronto Metropolitan University in an email.

    A bad experience could also backfire on the brands.

    Fans who have a hard time getting tickets, as has become customary for the tour, could also mean customers sour on brands, said Powers.

    Her show slowed Ticketmaster’s systems significantly in November, leading to U.S. Senate hearings and politicians promising to take action.

    While Swift’s shows have soldiered on, the ticketing process now relies heavily on verified pre-sales where fans sign up in advance for a chance to buy ducats. However, demand often outweighs supply, leaving many unhappy on the wait list or turning to scalpers.

    “This opportunity comes with risks,” Powers said.

    “Even Taylor Swift can get sick, cancel dates. The big sponsors also bear some of the risk of an unforeseen issue causing a cancellation or postponement of concert dates.”

    Tickets to see Taylor Swift perform six shows in Toronto next November went on sale Wednesday as fans “prepared for war” to see the megastar.

    Ticketmaster released tickets to fans who registered in advance in an effort to weed out bots and professional resellers. Wednesday’s tickets were for two shows – Nov. 14 and 15, 2024, at the Rogers Centre in downtown Toronto.

    Tickets for Swift’s Nov. 16 and 21 shows will go on sale Thursday, and the artists last shows on Nov. 22 and 23 will be available for purchase Friday.

    RBC Avion members will have the chance to purchase a select number of tickets on Aug. 16, Ticketmaster states.

    One Swift fan told The Canadian Press that if she is not able to secure a ticket to any of the superstar’s tour dates in Toronto, she’ll stand outside the venue all six nights anyway.

    Such is the devotion of Taylor Swift’s fervent Canadian fans who say they’re “preparing for war” to see Swift’s only Canadian stop on her Eras Tour.

    Those looking to score tickets right away must have already registered for the “verified fan” sale and received a unique access code with further instructions, but that still doesn’t guarantee access to a seat.

    Taylor Swift tops the list of nominees for the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, with a chance to win eight more “Moon Person” statues at this year’s awards, MTV announced on Tuesday.  If Swift sweeps her categories during the Sept. 12 live ceremony, she’ll become the most-awarded artist in MTV history.

    Madonna currently holds the title with 20 MTV awards followed by Beyoncé with 16. Swift, who is packing stadiums on her Eras Tour, has previously won 14, MTV said in a statement announcing the latest group of nominees.

    Swift’s nominations include Song of the Year and Video of the Year for her hit song “Anti-Hero.”  She is also nominated for Artist of the Year alongside Beyonce, Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj, KAROL G, and Shakira.

    SZA follows closely with six nominations for her song “Kill Bill,” including Song of the Year and Video of the Year.

    This year also saw the greatest number of first-time nominees for awards, MTV said, with nods going to 35 rookies including GloRilla, Yung Miami, and Saucy Santana.

    Fans can vote for their favorite nominees at the MTV page here. (MTV is owned by Paramount Global, which is also the parent company of CBS.) The awards ceremony will take place Sept. 12 at the Prudential Center in New Jersey at 8 p.m. ET.

In an Aug. 6 Instagram post shared by Gayle King, the actor posed at the Eras Tour in an over-the-top outfit completely dedicated to Taylor Swift. Tatum attended the LA show the day prior in a black t-shirt with the words “It’s Me, Hi, I’m the Daddy, It’s Me” written in pastel fabric paint (a reference to Swift’s “Anti-Hero”). He completed the look by framing one eye in a pink crystal heart, harkening back to the imagery from Swift’s iconic “Lover” era. “A round of applause to @channingtatum & @karomobrown who went all in!” King captioned her post, gesturing to his creative ensemble.

    Famous Taylor Swift fans have consistently raised the bar for Eras Tour fashion, with Sofía Vergara in a rhinestone matching set, and Keleigh Teller in a lavender feathered coat. Those who have also shown love to the “Lover” era — the romantic seventh studio album in Swift’s discography — include Lana Condor, who wore a pink cowgirl hat and temporary heart tattoos, and Ava Phillippe, whose sparkly pink corset had major “Lover” energy.

    In later videos, Tatum flexed his dance moves from the audience, accompanied by his daughter, 10-year-old Everly, who clearly inspired the messaging on his shirt. Since the start of the performance, Tatum had also collected a few of the infamous “friendship bracelets” often traded at Swift’s concerts, adding even more fun accessories to the already unforgettable outfit. Yes, including face jewels a la Lover.

    Tatum graced the packed VIP bunker at Saturday’s show with Everly, his 10-year-old daughter he shares with ex-wife Jenna Dewan. And it’s ok to call him “daddy”—he literally put it on his shirt.

    In photos shared by Gayle King, Tatum is rocking cutoff jorts, thickly clustered stick-on jewels in a heart around his eye in an homage to the Lover cover (or homage to Mark Zuckerberg, or why not both?) and a black, seemingly homemade shirt with “Hi, it’s me, I’m the daddy, it’s me” on the front and “TS” on the back. The message may be a reference to Swift’s “Anti-Hero,” but if you ask us, it’s definitely missing the “anti” and heading straight toward full-on hero status.

    More than just a show of solidarity, the reason for “targeting” Swift stems from the knowledge of how the Eras Tour has caused an entire micro-economy to spring up in its wake. One that hotels in L.A. are profiting from majorly while the hotel workers’ “stand” against being taken advantage of goes unnoticed in the midst of “Taylor fever.” Playing five dates at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium, Swift is likely drawing in not only the majority of Los Angeles with these dates, but also many others from the far reaches of California (and beyond) who need a hotel room to stay in. Thus, the hotels’ ability, as mentioned in the open letter, to double and triple their rates due to the high demand. Workers’ rights be damned. 

    In effect, the reaction has been: that sounds like a “management problem,” not an “average person” problem. Let alone a “Swift problem.” And, considering the recent Grammys after-party she held at the Chateau Marmont, Swift has never much concerned herself with the plight of the worker (least of all the hotel worker). Many argue such things shouldn’t be her concern. After all, she’s “just” a singer. Or, as Swift’s recent collaborator, Lana Del Rey might say, “I’m a simple singer, I’m doing my best to navigate the waters of the constant tumultuous hardships in war-torn countries all over the world that I travel through monthly. For the record I’m doing the best I can and my intentions are better than most people[’]s that I know.” Such humility. In any case, the I’m “just” a celebrity defense doesn’t hold much water for someone like Swift (or Del Rey, who has her own sect of worshipful acolytes). For, as we’ve seen (and as referred to above), Swift is that rare breed of celebrity who has more clout than, let’s just say it, the president. At the mere drop of an instruction, Swift can get legions to do something (including register to vote, as she did when she, for the first time in her life, took a political stance by denouncing Tennessee Congressional candidate Marsha Blackburn). The catch is, she has to be interested in the cause. 

    And since “what matters” is, unfortunately, subjective, Swift didn’t bother to comment on the urgent plea from the Unite Here 11 union and select California politicians. Instead, she carried on with the dates as scheduled. After all, she’s a busy woman, and everyone should just be grateful she’s bothering to grace their city with her presence at all. Right? How is it her “job” to also get involved in local political disputes? This being something a few have pointed out, in addition to announcing that politicians are trying to deflect from their own less than stellar attempts at helping workers secure a better living wage. It’s “on them” to handle such things. Or should be. But the reality is, as the twenty-first century has forged ahead, celebrity power has only continued to outshine actual political power. Although U.S. politics and celebrity have long been linked in the modern era (especially when we look to the example of JFK and Marilyn Monroe), it’s ramped up to a scale that the Founding Fathers never could have possibly envisioned (therefore made provisions for in the Constitution).

    There was Madonna draping herself in an American flag and little else during a Rock the Vote campaign in 1990; there was Britney Spears influencing a California anti-paparazzi law that went into effect in 2010; there was Paris Hilton being dragged into the 2008 election campaign thanks to an anti-Barack Obama ad from John McCain likening the former’s “political goals” to wanting nothing more than to become another celebrity; there was Kim Kardashian posing on a 2017 cover of Interview as Jackie Kennedy and being referred to as “America’s New First Lady”; there was Jay-Z and Beyoncé pantomiming “dirt off their shoulders” with Obama at a fundraiser they put on for the president in 2012…the list goes on. And, of course, extends to the fact that celebrities often become politicians themselves (e.g., Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger), in lieu of “merely” exerting influence outside of actual political jurisdiction. 

    The slew of merchandise available that can have anyone nominating their “fave celeb” for the job of president via the simple line “[Insert Name Here] 4 President” is also eerily telling. Take, for example, the aforementioned Paris Hilton, who responded to McCain’s campaign ad by making a parody video called “Paris For President.” It wasn’t really a parody though. For there’s no denying Paris would take the job if she thought she could. But perhaps she’s not as delusional as her former mentee Kim’s now ex-husband, Kanye, who ran for president in 2020 despite 1) having no chance in hell and 2) missing a large number of states’ deadlines to appear on the ballot as a third-party candidate. Call it another prime example of celebrity hubris.

    Just as Swift has her own form of it. Which includes picking and choosing when to get involved with “petty” political matters. And when it comes to doing anything that might jeopardize the trajectory of her tour for the sake of hotel workers, Swift has made it apparent that she’s not exactly “comrade” material. Though the union and backing politicians that tried to implore her to be are obviously aware of the  “unofficial” political position she holds within the nation’s ever-diminishing heart.

    Taylor Swift fans flocked to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles this week — and for Kobe Bryant’s family, it was an extra special occasion. Vanessa Bryant, the widow of the NBA legend, took their daughters to the concert and honored her late husband and daughter, Gigi, who died in a helicopter crash in 2020.

    Vanessa donned a custom denim jacket with an image of her husband and Swift together on stage. The image was taken in 2015, when Bryant presented Swift with a banner for setting the record for most sold out shows at the Staples Center. Bryant was very familiar with the Staples Center, now the Cyrpto.com Arena, since he played all of his home games on the court while starring of the Los Angeles Lakers.

    Vanessa’s jacket also had an emblem with embroidered Swift lyrics: “Say you’ll remember me,” from the song “Wildest Dreams.”

    She also honored her family members by wearing beaded bracelets with their names. Swift fans often wear homemade bracelets to her shows and swap them with fellow concertgoers. 

    Vanessa and Kobe shared three other daughters together – Natalia, now 20, Bianka, now 6, and Capri, now 3. At the concert, Bianka got a surprise most Swifties only dream of – Swift went over to the edge of the stage and hugged her.

    Vanessa posted an image of the embrace and other shots from the concert on Instagram writing: “We love you @taylorswift.”

    It appears the Bryant girls are longtime fans of Swift. Vanessa also posted a video of Natalia singing a Taylor Swift song with Gigi, who died at age 13. 

    Kobe and Gigi were traveling to a basketball game via helicopter with seven others when it crashed into the hills of Calabasas, California on January 26, 2020. Everyone onboard was killed.

    After the crash, a memorial at the Staples Center was held in honor of the basketball star and those killed. During an emotional speech, Vanessa remembered Gigi as an “amazingly sweet and gentle soul” and Kobe as “romantic.”

    “Babe, you take care of our Gigi,” she said to close her speech.
