Another Depth Concern Addressed, Eagles Trade For Jahan Dotson – Philadelphia Sports Nation

With teams needing to trim down rosters by nearly 40 spots in the next 5 days. Roster moves are inevitable, and the Eagles kicked things off with two roster changes, releasing CJ Uzomah, and signing Jason Poe. A necessity to bolster the OL with concern over Tyler Steen’s injury.

Like most teams, we might not see the Eagles starters in this weekends final preseason game. Giving an indication of most of the 53-man roster, days before the deadline.

However with injury reports already growing, there was a position of concern.

What would happen to the Eagles offense if they were to lose DeVonta Smith or A.J Brown at any point of the season?

    Thursdays Trade

The Eagles kicked Thursday morning off with a trade announcement. And one that’s hard to complain about.

Trading a 3rd and two 7th round picks to add what will likely be the teams WR3, and to gain a third 5th round pick for next years draft is excellent work from the Eagles front office. Leaving a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th also available for the upcoming trade deadline on November 5th.

With the trade for Dotson, the Eagles WR depth should seemingly be in place. With AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith being the WR1&2, pushing for another season with matching 1000+ receiving yards, while Dotson & Campbell should be the WR3/4.

Some may have been hoping for Johnny Wilson to crack the roster, but it just didn’t make sense in the wake of a serious injury to one of the starters, the Eagles required depth – and forcing a 6th round pick into a large role could end the same way Quez Watkins tenure did.

This way, even the Eagles WR3/4 will have had previous 500+ yard seasons, and look to expand their roles in Kellen Moore’s offense.

    Dotson’s Time As a Commander

In 2 years with the Commanders, Dotson put up the following stat lines:

    2022 – 35REC on 61TGT, 523Yards, 7TD, 12GP

    2023 – 49REC on 83TGT, 518Yards, 4TD, 17GP

Both years Dotson finished 3rd in Receiving yards on the Commanders, behind Curtis Samuel and Terry McLaurin.

Something else to note for the Commanders performances was the inconsistency in QB play. A team that Dotson (and others) saw Carson Wentz, Taylor Heinicke and Sam Howell all have drastic levels of play across two seasons.

With Campbell & Dotson looking to make impacts with their new team. Will either, or both of these receivers see a 500+ yard season?

  • Kirk Cousins inks 4-year, $180M contract with Atlanta Falcons

Kirk Cousins inks 4-year, $180M contract with Atlanta Falcons

Quarterback Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons have agreed upon a four-year contract. The deal is potentially worth up to $180 million. $100 million is guaranteed, with $90 million being paid in the first two years of the deal. There is also a $2 million incentive if Cousins leads the Falcons to a Super Bowl title.

The maximum value of Kirk Cousins’s contract is potentially $188 million.

Cousins’ move to Atlanta was first announced by his agent, Mike McCartney. Cousins played 12 seasons for the Vikings and Washington. He threw for 39,471 yards and 270 touchdowns. He was selected to play in 4 Pro Bowls. However, after suffering an Achilles’ injury, the Vikings allowed Cousins to test the free agency market. The Vikings were serious about bringing back the quarterback, however the Falcons were serious about bringing Cousins in the building.

  • Eagles are largest of 8 road favorites in Week 9

Eagles are largest of 8 road favorites in Week 9

Jalen Hurts and the undefeated Eagles are looking for the first 8-0 start in franchise history while the rest of Philadelphia is focused on beating another team from Houston.

When the Eagles (7-0) visit the Texans (1-5-1) on Thursday night, the Phillies will host the Astros in Game 5 of the World Series. It will be a potential Series-clinching game for the Phillies if they can win Game 4 Wednesday night.

The Eagles rarely take a backseat to another team in Philly, but they understand they haven’t accomplished anything yet.

“Dawg mentality is that nothing matters of what happened before,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. “We’re ready to go get ready to go 1-0 this week. That’s something that it’s just a mindset that we have as an organization.”

The Eagles are the largest among eight road favorites in Week 9. They’re 13 1/2-point favorites, per FanDuel Sportsbook.

Pro Picks considers this a second bye in three weeks for the Eagles.

    EAGLES, 34-13

Los Angeles Rams (plus 3) at Tampa Bay

Tom Brady and the Buccaneers (3-5) are struggling. They’ve lost five of six, the offense can’t score, the defense is poor and coaching has been a problem. The Rams (3-4) have their own issues, but Aaron Donald could dominate a weak interior offensive line in a rematch from last January.

    UPSET SPECIAL: RAMS, 22-20

Los Angeles Chargers (minus 3) at Atlanta

The Chargers (4-3) are supposed to be championship contenders. The NFC South-leading Falcons (4-4) are supposed to be rebuilding. This week both teams play like it.

    BEST BET: CHARGERS, 31-20

Green Bay (minus 3) at Detroit

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers have lost four in a row and are 3-5 for the first time since Brett Favre was in Green Bay. The Lions (1-6) have lost five in a row after the “Hard Knocks” hype. The Packers are due for a breakout win.

    PACKERS, 30-23

    Seattle (plus 1) at Arizona

Kyler Murray has been a major disappointment and the Cardinals (3-5) are 11-17 at home under coach Kliff Kingsbury. Seahawks QB Geno Smith is thriving in his first full season as a starter since 2014, leading Seattle (5-3) to first in the NFC West.

    CARDINALS, 27-24

    Miami (minus 5) at Chicago

The Dolphins (5-3) reloaded at the trade deadline, bolstering both sides of the ball. The Bears (3-5) were sellers and buyers.

    DOLPHINS, 24-20

Carolina (plus 7 1/2) at Cincinnati

Joe Burrow and the Bengals (4-4) need a rebound like the Panthers (2-6) after the Browns whipped them.

    BENGALS, 27-16

Las Vegas (minus 1 1/2) at Jacksonville

The Jaguars (2-6) have lost five straight. The Raiders (2-5) went from nearly knocking off eventual AFC champion Cincinnati in the playoffs to last place.

    JAGUARS, 20-17

Indianapolis (plus 5 1/2) at New England

This isn’t Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady anymore.

    PATRIOTS, 23-20

Buffalo (minus 12 1/2) at New York Jets

The Bills (6-1) outscored the Jets 72-27 last season. But these aren’t the same old Jets.

    BILLS, 28-17

Minnesota (minus 3 1/2) at Washington

The Commanders (4-4) have won three in a row, including two straight with Taylor Heinicke. Kirk Cousins beat his former team the only other time he faced them.

    VIKINGS, 24-19

Tennessee (plus 12 1/2) at Kansas City

Chiefs coach Andy Reid is 20-3 after a regular-season bye. The Titans (5-2) have won five in a row. One streak will end.

    CHIEFS, 27-17

Baltimore (minus 2 1/2) at New Orleans

The Ravens (5-3) are aiming for two straight road wins against the NFC South opponents. It won’t be easy against the Saints (3-5).

    SAINTS, 26-24

    2022 RECORD

Last Week: Straight up: 7-8. Against spread: 7-8.

Season: Straight up: 71-52. Against spread: 65-57-1.

Thursday Night: Straight up: 5-3. Against spread: 4-4.

Monday Night: Straight up: 5-4. Against spread: 4-5.

Upset Special: Straight up: 3-5. Against spread: 4-4.

  • Heinicke to mark win with new pair of Jordans

Heinicke to mark win with new pair of Jordans

LANDOVER, Md. — Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke did more than help his team win Sunday. He also pocketed $125,000. And he’ll use that money to build on his collection of Jordan sneakers.

Heinicke receives a bonus every time he plays 60% of the offensive snaps in a Commanders victory, which he did Sunday in the 23-21 win over the Green Bay Packers. He’ll continue a tradition that began last season when he earned seven such bonuses.

“Every time we get the win, when I’m in the training room the next day I always buy myself a pair of [Jordans],” Heinicke said.

And the shoes’ color scheme always relates to the team they beat.

“Tomorrow I’ll probably buy myself green and yellow Js,” he said, referring to the Packers’ colors.

He can earn up to $1.5 million in bonus money for wins. That’s how much extra he earned last season in total bonuses, which was $500,000 more than his base salary. His base salary this year is $1.5 million.

Even bigger than adding to his shoe collection, Heinicke rallied Washington (3-4) to a needed win in relief of the injured Carson Wentz. Washington placed Wentz on injured reserve with a fractured right ring finger Saturday, meaning Heinicke will start at least three more games.

The Commanders have won two in a row, but remain two games behind Dallas for third place in the NFC East. Still, they’re only a half-game out of a wild-card spot heading into next week’s matchup at Indianapolis.

Heinicke struggled in the first half, completing seven of 17 passes for 39 yards with one touchdown and a pick-six. But he finished the game 20-of-33 for 201 yards and two touchdowns, delivering a perfect throw to receiver Terry McLaurin down the right sideline for a 37-yard score in the third quarter.

McLaurin said Heinicke’s on-field attitude is infectious.

“Taylor has a lot of energy,” McLaurin said. “You can tell he plays free-spirited and I think it’s a lot of what he has been through in his career. He plays like it’s his last game every time and that energy spreads throughout the team. You want to make that play to elevate him.”

Linebacker Cole Holcomb was more succinct.

“He’s a gamer,” Holcomb said. “He’s a tough, tough quarterback — a little undersized, but he has that dog in him.”

Indeed, Heinicke was an undrafted free agent in 2015 who was out of the league for nearly two years until Washington called him late in the 2020 season. He’s listed at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds and his play style captured fans’ attention and earned him not only respect from teammates but also a new contract in 2021 that rewards every win.

He has played for five NFL franchises and was a backup in the XFL in 2020.

“It’s an underdog mentality,” Washington coach Ron Rivera said. “He has a tremendous amount of faith in what he can do.”

But while Heinicke smiled big when asked about his bonus, there was a larger meaning to this win for him. He grew up a Packers fan, thanks to his late father, a Wisconsin native. Heinicke has talked often about watching the Packers win the Super Bowl in 2011 with his father, Brett, who died later that year.

So while Heinicke will have a new pair of shoes, he said he’ll also frame his jersey from this game.

“He’s up there right now drinking a beer, having a good time,” Heinicke said of his dad. “I know he’d be proud of me. This one’s for him.”

  • QB Heinicke ‘more confident’; Commanders agree

QB Heinicke ‘more confident’; Commanders agree

ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke said he’s a different player than last season. Now he’ll get a chance to prove just how much.

When Heinicke starts against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, he’ll be able to draw upon his 2021 experience, when he started 15 games for the injured Ryan Fitzpatrick. Now he’ll start for Carson Wentz, who fractured his right ring finger.

“I feel a lot more comfortable, a lot more confident,” Heinicke said. “I was a little overwhelmed last year; it was my first time starting 15 games and it gets to you a little bit.”

It’s still unclear how long Wentz will miss. He remained in Los Angeles this week to rehab his finger after having surgery Monday night. The Commanders hope to know Friday whether or not he’ll need to be placed on injured reserve, which means he’d miss at least four games.

Until Wentz returns, Heinicke will start. His first one comes against the team he grew up cheering for thanks to his father’s Wisconsin roots. Heinicke said one of his last memories with his late father involved them watching Green Bay’s Super Bowl victory after the 2011 season. It made last year’s game at Lambeau Field special for Heinicke; it’ll provide more juice for this start as well.

“To go to Lambeau last year was super neat and to get that first start this year against Green Bay at home is going to be super cool,” Heinicke said.

Washington (2-4) has struggled at quarterback for decades and that hasn’t changed under coach Ron Rivera. This is the ninth time Washington has had to make an in-season quarterback change, whether because of ineffectiveness or injuries. It’s the third time Heinicke has come off the bench to start.

The hope for Washington is that Heinicke can spark an offense that has struggled the last four games. After scoring a combined 55 points the first two games, the Commanders managed just 47 in the next four. Wentz was under duress because of pass protection issues; he also was still adjusting to a new offense.

But Heinicke’s mobility could at least help. He rushed for 313 yards last season, including 95 in a 24-10 loss at Green Bay. Wentz has a stronger arm and more size, but was unable to extend plays this season. Wentz was sacked 23 times; Heinicke was sacked 38 times in 2021.

“His ability to extend plays is really big for us,” Washington receiver Terry McLaurin said. “The heart he plays with, a lot of guys galvanize behind that. You never know what you’ll get with Taylor and that’s the fun part of it.

“He’s a guy who you have confidence in his ability to make plays. It may not be the prettiest or what you’re used to every Sunday. … He’s playing like it’s backyard football, but playing within himself.”

Heinicke also said he’s noticed a difference in his arm strength. That had long been the knock on Heinicke, but he said after working with quarterback trainer Adam Dedeaux this past offseason, he has seen a change. They worked on using his hips more when he throws.

“The way he’s driving the ball down the field is better for us receivers,” McLaurin said, comparing his throws to last season.

Teammates have turned to him when they have questions about the offense, considering he’s played for Washington since December 2020; he spent one year in this system in Carolina and another one with Minnesota.

But a large appeal to Heinicke remains his popularity with other players. During the open locker room sessions for the media, Heinicke is often sitting at his locker chatting with teammates. Two years ago when he came off the bench to spark the offense, and lead a near upset of Tampa Bay in the playoffs, it energized teammates. Defensive end Chase Young would often point vigorously to Heinicke’s name on the back of his jersey.

“I always say he’s the coolest quarterback in the room with the most swag,” rookie receiver Jahan Dotson said.

    Rivera understands that appeal.

“The guys rally around anybody that’s going to step up and compete and do the things that you need them to do,” Rivera said. “It’s kind of that underdog story.”

  • QB Wentz has surgery on finger; no timeline given

QB Wentz has surgery on finger; no timeline given

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz underwent successful surgery Monday in Los Angeles to repair a fractured finger on his throwing hand, the team said in a statement.

The Commanders did not specify how much time Wentz will have to miss, only that he “will begin rehab and is expected to make a full recovery.”

If Wentz is placed on injured reserve he will have to miss at least four games before he could return.

Dr. Steven Shin at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Surgery Center did the operation, the team said.

Wentz fractured his right ring finger in Washington’s 12-7 win over the Chicago Bears on Thursday night. Taylor Heinicke would replace Wentz as the starter. Rookie Sam Howell, a fifth-round draft pick, would become the primary backup.

Washington (2-4) hosts the Green Bay Packers (3-3) on Sunday.

Wentz hurt the finger with two minutes left in the first half when, on his follow-through, his right hand hit the arm of Bears defensive lineman Justin Jones. Wentz could be seen shaking the hand after that play and later on the drive. He never left the game.

In six games, Wentz has thrown for 1,489 yards and 10 touchdowns — tied for fifth in the NFL — with six interceptions, third most in the league. Wentz’s Total QBR of 36.0 ranks 27th in the NFL.

The team traded three draft picks for Wentz and a 2022 second-round choice. The Commanders surrendered second- and third-round picks in 2022 plus a conditional pick in 2023 that will be a second-rounder if Wentz plays 70% of Washington’s offensive snaps.

Heinicke started 15 games last season, throwing for 20 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. His legs could provide a spark for an offense that needs one. The Commanders scored a combined 55 points in the first two games but only 47 in the ensuing four games.

Wentz has been sacked 23 times, tied for most in the NFL.
