  • Legacy in Every Bottle: How 5 generations of the Wente family shaped California wine

    LIVERMORE, Calif. — For more than 140 years, Wente Family Vineyards has blended tradition, innovation and family passion in every bottle.

    Fifth-generation sisters Aly and Niki Wente are carrying on their great-great-grandfathers legacy, leading with sustainability, shaping the story “from grape to glass” and inviting guests to experience a little piece of the family every time they visit.

    “When you visit Wente Family Vineyards, I want guests to feel that they are coming to be a part of our family,” said Niki Wente, director of Vineyard Operations. “You’re tasting all of our hard work. All of the generations are in every bottle of wine.”

    Founded in 1883, Wente Family Vineyards holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously family-owned and operated winery in the United States. The legacy began with Carl Wente in the Livermore Valley and continues today under the leadership of the fifth generation.

    “(Carl) learned how to make wine in the Napa Valley under Charles Krug,” said Aly Wente, senior vice president of Hospitality, Business and Marketing, and Carl Wente’s great-great-granddaughter. “He came to Livermore because Livermore was a really similar wine growing region to Napa.”

    Aly and Niki’s great-grandfather, Ernest, began planting Chardonnay in the Livermore Valley in 1908, importing cuttings from Burgundy.

    “He curated this really flavorful fruit-forward style of Chardonnay and people started to hear about it. Today, we believe that around 75% of all California Chardonnay has genetic roots back to our familys property,” Aly said.

    “We come from a line of strong men who helped shape us,” Aly continued. “But now we have this incredible force of women leading winemaking, leading viticulture. So, we like to say ‘from grape to glass.’ Women are really kind of shaping the story at Wente right now.”

    For Niki, that story begins in the vineyard.

    “I run our entire agricultural division and so every day I’m really focused on sustainable quality of wine grapes and how to continue to produce the most beautiful wines possible from dirt to bottle,” she said.

    At the tasting lounge, Aly said, “You can park your car, taste wine, play an 18-hole championship Greg Norman-designed golf course, then come back and potentially see a concert or attend a food and wine experience. You’ll never have to move your car and you get to have this wonderful day enjoying wine and being with people.”

    Reflecting on the legacy, Niki said, “My great-great-grandfather Carl Wente would be stunned silent at the success of all the generations over the years. We have so much passion for growing grapes and making wines and working as a family and it’s just so important to us.”

    An Agave Lounge With a Mexican Tasting Menu Will Come to Wicker Park

    An agave lounge with a six-course small bites menu paired with cocktails should debut later this month in Wicker Park. Botánero is from chef and partner Yanitzin “Yani” Sanchez and partner Richard Vallejo. It’s replacing Caspian, a casual Mediterranean restaurant at 1413 N. Ashland Avenue, according to a news release.

    Botánero’s special tasting menu will be offered on Wednesdays, kicking off on October 23. There will be two seatings daily and reservations will be taken via Tock. Besides the tasting menu look for tamales, quesadillas, and tlayudas made with tortillas derived from heirloom corn from Mexico.

    Typically served at bars with drinks, botanas are small plates, kind of a Mexican counterpart to Spanish tapas. Ownership hopes the taco de negro asada with prime beef ribeye, queso asadero, mojo negro, onion-cilantro gremolata, and roasted marrow bone becomes a signature.

    Weekend brunch should include a bottomless option for unlimited house margaritas, micheladas, mimosas, and spritzers.

    Chef Yani and Vallejo are frequent collaborators. They teamed on Taquizo, a casual taqueria that opened in 2022 and has since closed in Wicker Park. Taquizo was a reboot of Las Palmas. There are also two shuttered suburban Mexican spots: Mercado Cocina in suburban Glenview and Cine in Hinsdale.

    Sanchez’s credits also include Sabor Saveur in Wicker Park. That space would become Takito, and she continued as a consultant for the burgeoning group that expanded into West Loop and Lincoln Park.

    While not the sole focus of Botánero, Mexican tasting menus are still a rarity in Chicago, with Topolobampo and Tzuco in River North being the most prominent. In recent years, taco-tasting menus at places like Cariño and Taqueria Chingon have soared.

    Botánero, 1413 W. Ashland Avenue, planned for an October opening; Wednesday tasting menu launches on October 23, brunch launches on November 9.

    Volunteering at the Houston Food Bank

    In the wake of the recent derecho storm and tornadoes that recently tore through Houston and the Gulf Coast, volunteers are as crucial than ever at the Houston Food Bank. The nonprofit is currently supporting relief efforts across the Greater Houston area, and is looking for helping hands to sort and pack product to deliver out into the community. Individuals – including kids – and groups are welcome to volunteer, and registration can be done online for shifts from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday; 6 to 9 p.m., Monday to Friday; and 9 a.m. to noon Sundays. There is a significant need for volunteers during the 6-9 p.m. shifts.

    Equal Parts Brewing and chef Dawn Burrell are teaming up to create a special brew for Mental Health Awareness Month in May, a cause that is dear to Equal Parts team and Burrell as they have tragically lost loved ones to suicide. Beginning May 10, beer fans can sip the Shared Strength lager at Equal Parts Brewing, made with purple rice and the West African grain fonio to create a crisp and dry brew with slightly floral and nutty notes. The brewery will donate 100 percent of the brew’s proceeds to I’ll Have What She’s Having and its mental health efforts; and local joints including Underground Hall, Coltivare, EZ’s Liquor, Neil’s Bahr, Tacos A Go Go in Oak Forest, The Heights location of Local Foods, Anvil, Flying Saucer and Johnny’s Gold Brick will also pickup charitable kegs to tap beginning May 13.

    Spicy Chilled at Ramen Tatsu-Ya

    Spicy Chilled, the refreshing, brothless cold ramen dish, is back at all six Texas locations of Ramen Tatsu-Ya, including Houston’s location at 1722 California. The warm weather staple features spicy ramen with citrus soy dressing, ajitama (marinated soft boiled egg), cucumber, tomatoes, pirikara (which means “spicy” in Japanese) ground pork, chili oil, scallions and karashi mustard, giving it a wasabi-like punch. The dish’s official beverage pairing — Kyuri Kup — also returns, combining cucumber, simple syrup, yuzu and citrus over ice for a refreshing drink to help tame the ramen’s heat. Guests can choose to make the beverage boozy by adding sake. Spicy Chilled is priced at $14, with Kyuri Kup available for $5 ($6 with sake).
