  • Aardvark Tactical’s ‘The Debrief With Jon Becker’ Announces Launch of Season Four

Aardvark Tactical’s ‘The Debrief With Jon Becker’ Announces Launch of Season Four

“The Debrief with Jon Becker,” the acclaimed podcast for Aardvark Tactical that takes a deep dive into elite tactical units’ leadership principles and practices, is thrilled to announce the launch of its highly anticipated fourth season. Featured episodes this season include critical incident reviews of the Parkland, Florida school shooting, the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue shooting, and the Uvalde school shooting, among others.

This season will also add a new feature, Decision Making Exercises (DMEs) created by the California Association of Tactical Officers (CATO) to allow Debrief listeners to run tabletop exercises with their teams based on the episode. These DMEs utilize a three-step exercise to place the listener into the shoes of responding officers and allow them to consider how they would have approached the situation. Each DME will be released as a separate episode beginning with the season’s first episode on the Parkland, Florida school shooting.

Talking about the new seasons, The Debrief host Jon Becker said, “We’re thrilled to unveil Season 4. We are so grateful that the show has found such a large and passionate audience, and this year we are planning to up our game for them even further. We have some amazing episodes this season and are extremely excited to be adding CATO DMEs to this season’s critical incident reviews. These exercises, based on real-life events, provide essential decision-making experience and tactical science principles to prepare our listeners to respond to similar incidents.”

Discussing the new partnership, CATO’s President Brent Stratton said, “Now more than ever, it’s vital that tacticians in our profession are critical thinkers and that they learn from incidents occurring across our country. This joint effort between the California Association of Tactical Officers and The Debrief seeks to do exactly that. These decision-making exercises will allow officers to learn from the lessons that have been faced by officers and communities countrywide. We believe that well-educated and well-trained police officers lead to safer communities.”

The first episode debuted Friday, September 13th, with Chief Clyde Parry, and a critical incident review of Parkland. New episodes drop every two weeks.

  • University of Florida Students Build Camouflage Device for Army

University of Florida Students Build Camouflage Device for Army

It started as a class project for University of Florida senior engineering students, and it became a viable solution for soldiers who needed an easier, faster, and safer way to camouflage their vehicles on the battlefield.

Students from Matthew J. Traum’s mechanical engineering capstone course received real-world training last year when they partnered with peers at Georgia Institute of Technology and the Civil-Military Innovation Institute, or CMI2, to design and produce a vehicle camouflage deployer for the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

“This was a successful collaboration that tackled a problem faced by soldiers in the field — and much more rapidly than the Army’s conventional process,” said Traum, Ph.D., an instructional associate professor in the UF Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Traum said a prototype of the UF-designed vehicle camouflage deployment device was delivered to Fort Stewart at the end of the fall 2023 semester and replicated in-house by the Army. The device is currently being field tested.

“Our students designed and built the device in one calendar year, which is remarkable speed compared to conventional Army innovation timelines, which can take years,” Traum said. “The system surpassed the Army’s stated targets for mounting, deploying, and retracting the camouflage while keeping the soldiers safer.”

Traum learned through a colleague, Randy Emert at CMI2, about the potential for collaboration with the nonprofit organization through the Army’s Pathfinder program, managed by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Army Research Laboratory and supported by CMI2 to bridge the gaps in defense innovation by fostering relationships between service members and researchers. Traum was invited to the Army base to listen as soldiers presented their wish lists of projects.

“The Army’s tactical innovation labs play a key role in addressing in-field challenges faced by frontline soldiers and securing the necessary resources and technologies to resolve them,” said Emert, the CMI2 lab manager for the Marne Innovation Center at Fort Stewart. “We source problems directly from service members and engage engineering students in a short cycle of product development.”>

Based on what Traum heard that day, the need to camouflage combat vehicles faster was a good fit for his capstone students.

“Every time we park a combat vehicle on a battlefield, we need to cover it with camouflage material to hide it from the enemy,” said Capt. Chris Aliperti, co-founder of the Marne Innovation Center. “The process is not easy, and the soldiers were asking for something that would save them time and keep them safe.”

The camouflage deployment problem was broad enough for senior engineering students to work on, and one that could potentially be designed and built within a year, said Aliperti, who recently was promoted and is now a mechanical engineering instructor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

“This was something soldiers on the frontline were asking for, and our team didn’t have the bandwidth to address it,” Aliperti said. “The collaboration with the University of Florida provided invaluable hands-on experience to their students, and the end result contributes directly to enhancing the capabilities of our service members.”

The capstone course is a UF mechanical engineering student’s last class before they graduate and is viewed as a culmination of what students have learned throughout the curriculum, Traum said. The Army project spanned three semesters with about 80 students enrolled each semester.

Their approach evolved over the course of the year, and soldiers offered the students ideas and input weekly.

“It was interesting to see how the design started out as something most people would come up with, but after students met with the soldiers, took their feedback and ran analyses, they ended up with something that looked very different,” Aliperti said. “And it solves the problem much better than the original design.”

The students’ innovation addresses a longstanding pain point for soldiers. Traditionally, the poles used to hold up the camouflage material are staked into the ground, posing difficulties in muddy terrain or on urban concrete where securing them is impractical. Recognizing this limitation, the students devised a solution that uses mounting plates that are secured into place by the weight of the vehicle.

“That novel feature excited the Army,” Traum said. “By eliminating dependence on ground conditions, the mounting plates offer a versatile solution.”

The new device also masks the type of vehicle hidden beneath the camouflage netting. By strategically deploying poles to disrupt the shape of the netting, the device ensures that the vehicle’s silhouette varies each time it is deployed, thwarting the enemy’s ability to identify the concealed asset.

“The students were smart enough to realize in order to make a new device feasible, they should build around the equipment already in use,” Aliperti said. “Their device allows us to use the same poles and the same net but much more efficiently.”

Success of projects like the vehicle camouflage deployment device that was borne out of the Army’s tactical innovation lab set a precedent for future endeavors between academia and the military.

“Bringing ideas of this scope and scale to students to chew on allows young engineers to apply the fundamental lessons they learn in a book to real-life problems,” Aliperti said. “And if we strike gold on a great design like this one from the University of Florida, we’ve made a monumental impact across the entire Army.”

  • AARDVARK Tactical’s PROJECT7 Launches P7 Saves Initiative, Celebrates First Save

AARDVARK Tactical’s PROJECT7 Launches P7 Saves Initiative, Celebrates First Save

PROJECT7 Armor is proud to announce the launch of its new P7 Saves Initiative. This project celebrates the resilience of law enforcement and military personnel who survive critical incidents in the field while wearing PROJECT7 products. The program will highlight the inspiring survival stories of the men and women PROJECT7 was founded to protect.

P7 Saves launches with the story of Jordan Robison, a San Bernardino, California, police officer who survived multiple gunshot wounds from a 10mm Glock during a vehicle takedown of an attempted murder suspect in August 2021. Robison was hit seven times, with five rounds hitting outside the coverage of his PROJECT7 Scalable Entry Vest. Robison was struck once in each arm (fracturing both), once in the shoulder, once in the abdomen below his armor, and once in the leg, shattering his femur. Two rounds were stopped by his armor, with one deflecting off his cummerbund creating a grazing wound to his side and the second in the center of his rifle plate directly over his abdominal aorta.

After multiple surgeries and intensive physical and occupational therapy, Robison was released from the hospital to continue his road to recovery. Today, Robison is retired from law enforcement and working toward becoming a physician’s assistant. His goal is to work in the same hospital that treated him.

Robison’s survival was due in large part to the heroic actions of his team members. This is especially true for Officer Chris Shipley, who treated Robison with his own tourniquet despite also being shot in the leg, and medic Spence Brumbaugh who kept Robison alive during transport, giving the trauma team precious time to save Robison once he arrived at the hospital.

Reflecting on the experience, Robison said, “If I had to say one thing to the people who trained me, to all the people I’ve worked with over the years, to the people who made my armor, to the doctors who actually saved me — from the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

AARDVARK CEO and founder of PROJECT7 Jon Becker summed up the experience saying, “Jordan is the first save for PROJECT7. When we set out to build PROJECT7, we knew that, eventually, someone’s life would depend upon our armor. That is why we chose the best possible ballistic partner in Safariland and it’s what inspired us to build the best possible armor system. It is hard to express how grateful we are that Jordan is alive and healthy to experience the rest of his life.”

Jordan Robison’s story is a real-world example of PROJECT7’s purpose. To celebrate this occasion, PROJECT7 released a short documentary of his story, which can be found at https://aardvarktactical.com/p701/.

Jon Becker, Founder of Aardvark Tactical and PROJECT7 ARMOR, Releases The Debrief, a New Conversational Podcast Centered on Tactical Leadership

On The Debrief Podcast, Jon Becker speaks with elite tactical team leaders on team culture, crisis negotiation, tactical science, and more – in order to make us all better leaders, better thinkers, and better people.

    Press Release

    Jun 30, 2022

After over four decades spent serving and protecting tactical operators, Jon Becker is imparting some of the lessons he has learned along the way to listeners across the nation. The Debrief is an interview-based podcast that tells the stories of the leaders of some of the world’s top law enforcement and military units – individuals who navigate dangerous situations with their highly effective teams every day.

Jon Becker founded AARDVARK at just seventeen years old. The company started out as a climbing equipment business, often selling gear to SWAT teams and operators. After attending law school and working in police litigation, Becker realized that the best way he could serve tactical operators was by producing and providing high quality gear and products that would enhance operator safety on the job. After AARDVARK’s expansion and success, Becker founded PROJECT7, a provider of purpose-built, scalable, and configurable tactical platforms. Throughout this decades-long journey, Becker has learned invaluable lessons about the lives and work of law enforcement and tactical operators, leading him to a deep understanding of the principles and core values behind highly effective teams. After keynoting for many years on the leadership of elite units and what he terms “culture-centric” leadership, Becker is putting those lessons into The Debrief, a non-profit podcast that serves the wider public.

Although The Debrief focuses on the stories of tactical officers and team leaders, the audience is much more broad: leaders from all spheres, including business, entrepreneurship, communications, healthcare, law enforcement, and much more, will be informed and inspired by the lessons The Debrief has to impart. Jon and guests will cover conversations that are relevant to leaders of any field, including accountability, psychology, risk taking, and collaboration. The primary goal of The Debrief is to share these stories in the hopes of making us all better leaders, better thinkers, and better people.

The Debrief is available wherever you find your podcasts, including SpotifyAppleYouTube, and Amazon. Since its release in early June, the podcast has been met with awesome reviews and coverage from other podcasts such as CATO and Tactical Breakdown, as well as outlets such as Police & Security News. iCombat Invites Patrons to Participate in a Purge-Themed Halloween Event With Tactical Laser Tag at Their Schiller Park Location

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 27, 2018

iCombat, a tactical laser tag company geared towards adults, is hosting their 2nd annual Prison Purge Laser Tag event this October for those who want a Halloween scare where they can fight back.

Though the government won’t confirm it, an army of inmates has escaped the maximum security prison and taken over Alcatraz in Schiller Park so iCOMBAT Chicago is recruiting citizen-soldier sweep teams to prowl through the cells and passageways of the darkened two-story prison to defeat the escaped prisoners and retake the facility.

“We need your help now to defeat the escaped prisoners and retake Alcatraz,” said Rick Jensen, President of iCOMBAT. “With an army of unrelenting murderous inmates disrupting the intense laser tag action in our two-story prison facility, we can guarantee this Halloween experience will be somewhere between heart-pounding scary and laugh out loud fun.”

The technology wizards at iCOMBAT have invented a new system that allows real-life actors in prison attire to “attack” two sweep teams of tactical laser tag players. If a prisoner emerges from the abandoned cells and passageways in the darkened prison and can get within five feet of a player, the player will be dead. The players can only stop the prisoner’s advances temporarily by shooting them – but a few seconds later the prisoner will begin their attacks again. All of this action occurs during the usual tactical laser tag battles between two teams of players on a Hollywood style movie set of Alcatraz, a government prison facility.

“Last year, hundreds of citizen-soldiers joined the fight to end the prison purge at iCOMBAT Chicago,” said Jensen. “Demand is always high but these special Halloween sessions are limited so I suggest you grab your spot now as reservations are open.”

The special Prison Purge sessions at iCOMBAT Chicago will be featured on Friday and Saturday evenings from October 19th to October 27th, beginning after 5pm on Fridays and 3pm on Saturdays. The sessions will be 60 minutes long and cost $30. Reservations are encouraged and can be made at chicago.icombat.com, or by calling 855-454-4426. Due to the intense action, players must 13 years or older.

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 27, 2018

iCombat is a tactical laser tag company created for adults. They will be hosting their 4th annual Zombie Outbreak Laser Tag Event this October.

A horde of zombies has taken over a secret military base in Fitchburg but the government won’t acknowledge their existence so iCOMBAT Madison is recruiting citizen-soldier sweep teams to prowl through the darkened facility to destroy the zombies and take back the base.

“We need your help now to destroy the zombies and secure the secret military base in Fitchburg,” said Rick Jensen, President of iCOMBAT. “With a horde of unrelenting zombies disrupting the intense laser tag action on our darkened battlefield, we can guarantee this Halloween experience will be somewhere between heart-pounding scary and laugh out loud fun.”

The technology wizards at iCOMBAT have invented a new system that allows real-life actors in zombie costumes to “attack” two sweep teams of tactical laser tag players. If a zombie emerges from the darkened battlefield and can get within five feet of a player, the player will be dead. The players can only stop the zombies’ advances temporarily by shooting them – but a few seconds later the zombies will begin their attacks again.  All of this action occurs during the usual tactical laser tag battles between two teams of players on a Hollywood style movie set of a US military base.

“Last year, hundreds of citizen-soldiers joined the fight to end the zombie infestation at iCOMBAT Madison,” said Jensen.  “Demand is always high but these special Halloween sessions are limited so I suggest you grab your spot now as reservations are open.”

The special Zombie Hunt sessions at iCOMBAT Madison will be featured on Friday and Saturday evenings from October 19th to October 27th, beginning after 5pm. The sessions will be 60 minutes long and cost $30. Reservations are encouraged and can be made at barracks.icombat.com, or by calling 855-454-4426. Due to the intense action, players must 13 years or older.

iCOMBAT’s patented technology is so realistic that it is used for training by SWAT teams and Special Forces units around the world. The 16,000 square foot iCOMBAT Madison facility is modeled after Camp Leatherneck, the U. S. military base in Helmand, Afghanistan. It features guard towers, a sniper’s nest, real military vehicles, multiple exploding props, and one and two story buildings on a fully immersive field with a 27, 000 watt sound system. Participants will hear helicopters hovering overhead and jets screaming by during an action-packed session with multiple missions. There is a VIP area for observers to watch the competition. Scores and live footage of the missions will also be shown in the lobby on large television screens.

iCOMBAT Madison is located at 2919 Marketplace Drive in Fitchburg near the intersection of County Road PD (McKee Road) and Seminole Highway close to Breakaway Sports Center. More information about iCOMBAT can be found on their Facebook page at facebook.com/iCombatMadison or on their website Madison.icombat.com.
