  • Music Rewind 2025: Justin Bieber Took ‘FIRST PLACE’ This Year

    Move over “67,” the real word of the year is “swag.”

    No one thought the year 2025 would have Justin Bieber’s name written all over it. As long-time Justin Bieber fans, we thought it would be a few more years until we heard from our ‘Boyfriend’ again. Just imagine our surprise when we had over 40 new songs in just the span of a few months. With the surprise release of SWAG and SWAG II this year, Justin Bieber truly proved he’s “standing on business” now more than ever.

    “Swag, Swag, Swag, On You”

    Chillin’ by the fire while we eatin’ fondue. Bieber Fever never truly left our system, and 2025 brought it back full force. There’s no talking about this year’s most successful albums without talking about SWAG. We knew Justin was cooking up some exciting new music for us when he started sprinkling posts of himself in the studio with collaborator Eddie Benjamin throughout his Instagram page. Obviously, fans were overjoyed, but we really didn’t know when the new music was dropping. It could be 2025, or it could be 2027. Justin is known for teasing his fans and the media, so it really was anyone’s guess. One morning, we woke up, and black posters and billboards all over the world sported the word “swag,” and we knew then that new music was on its way!

    The next morning, SWAG was on our Spotify pages, and we immediately hit play. All that to say, SWAG was one of our favorite releases of the year! Just a few months later, Justin made the most unexpected announcement. SWAG had a bubblegum pink sister album, SWAG II, and it was dropping just a few months later. Could this year get any better!?

    Justin Is Standing On Business

    With SWAG II being one of our top albums on Spotify Wrapped this year, we can confidently say that Justin Bieber dominated 2025. This year, Justin really stepped into his R&B sound, masterfully defining the genre on hit songs like ‘YUKON,’ ‘WALKING AWAY,’ and ‘DAISIES.’ He even gave us a new all-time favorite song in the melodic and emotional ‘DEVOTION.’

    Justin masterfully turned this year on its head and claimed it as his own. From iconic, and admittedly hilarious, paparazzi run-ins in public (at the beach, mind you) to showcasing his love for his growing family, we’re so glad we get to be a part of his success in 2025.

    What’s Next: Livestreaming, Coachella, SKYLRK & More!

    Although some fans had little expectations for Justin Bieber this year, he clearly proved everyone wrong. As the year closes out, we have a lot of high expectations for Justin in 2026. We are hoping to expect even more Twitch livestreams and livestream concerts as well as new products from his fashion and lifestyle brand, SKYLRK. We’ve got those slippers on our Christmas wish-lists already, and if anyone can turn us into Twitch users, it’s Justin Bieber.

    But, most excitingly, Justin is headlining Coachella next year! We haven’t seen Justin perform live since the Justice Tour, so we’re already counting down the days until he’s on that stage in the desert. You can probably find us on the barricade, screaming and crying to every word. Even after Coachella, we’re crossing our fingers that Justin will head out on his own solo world tour. He’s mentioned a few times that he’s ready to do a handful of live performances again, and even if we have to travel across the world, we will be there to support him.

  • Justin Bieber’s SWAG II Is An Extension Of His R&B Greatness

    Justin Bieber did something no one saw coming. He released a second rendition of his latest album, SWAG, with only a 12-hour notice. SWAG II dropped at midnight on September 5, 2025, with a baby pink album cover and 23 new songs that fit inside the same vein as SWAG, released on July 11, 2025. This new double-album project continues to prove that Justin Bieber’s greatness lies less inside the pop genre and more heavily in the R&B genre (although it’s undeniable he’s made some of the best pop music of the 2010s).

    What Justin does best is pour his heart and pen into love songs with an R&B groove to back it. However, what most people tend to forget is that this is not something new for Justin. He’s always made it obvious he’s wanted to experiment and go full force in the genre that is hard to master. His 2020 project, Changes, and later his 2021 project Justice, were his first attempts at really proving this point to the world. Songs like ‘Confirmation’ and ‘2 Much’ could easily fit like a missing puzzle piece on SWAG’s tracklist. If you hit rewind even further, it could easily be argued that SWAG is an adult extension of Purpose, one of Justin’s most beloved albums released in 2015. Purpose was one of the first times Justin’s faith was vulnerably laid out in song, which is one of the most prominent themes in SWAG and SWAG II. More on that later.

    It seems Justin Bieber has finally found his footing in the studio after 4 years of releasing no new solo music, and fans can expect to hear, if Justin decides to grace us with even more new music in the future of his career, the SWAG-sound on most, if not all, of his future records. It’s where he’s comfortable and successful, so we can plan for him to stay in that pocket.

    Themes & Structure

    SWAG II expands on the themes presented to us in SWAG – faith, marriage, unity and peace, admiration, adoration, and personal growth. It’s clear Justin wants listeners to take the SWAG experience in full, so we recommend listening to both albums back to back if you have yet to hear them for the first time.

    It’s also impossible to talk about SWAG and SWAG II without touching on the golden lines of holy admiration that run through each of the songs. SWAG II ends with ‘STORY OF GOD,’ a 7-minute devotion to God, detailing Justin’s version of his individualized faith. Read the entire story here. Even if you yourself are not a believer in any particular faith, it’s a beautiful listen that rounds out the album in a very raw way. 

    Many fans have quickly compared Justin’s “new” sound to that of Michael Jackson. This comparison is not much of a surprise, however. Throughout his career, even as a young teenager, Justin has vocally admired Michael Jackson’s work and person. He’s copied his signature sound and adlib structure many times, but it seems to really come through on SWAG II on songs like ‘EYE CANDY’ and ‘LYIN’.’ Regardless of fans’ opinions on this, Justin does it almost flawlessly, and it comes through as clear admiration, not copying a formula that is already successful. With the help of talented producers like Mk.gee, Dijon, and Eddie Benjamin, Justin is designing his own formula for R&B success, and arguably has been paving this formula since he was 15 years old.

    ‘DOTTED LINE’ is a standout track as well. One thing Justin Bieber is really good at is grabbing a mic and just going for it, regardless of the instruments in the room or how his voice decides to sound that day. His emotions and mature vocals are undoubtedly raw, and it doesn’t need to be cleaned up in production. Where most other artists would clean these raw vocals up later in the creative process, Justin keeps them in. You can hear every breath, every vocal wobble, and every other sound that’s in the background of wherever he’s recording. A “fire” comes through at the 35-second mark, presumably from someone else in the studio commenting on how they feel about the song. It’s these little details that make SWAG II so special for long-time fans. If you love this sound, you can also find it on its sister songs ‘DEVOTION’ and ‘GLORY VOICE MEMO’ on SWAG.

    Justin and Hailey Bieber are in a “much better place” in their relationship. But will it last??

    The couple has been struggling with marriage issues for the last year — something JB confirmed in his new album, Swag. But now a source for Us Weekly on Thursday insisted the “tension has settled.” And it’s all for one important reason! They dished:

    “The intense focus and emotional toll of creating new music had put a strain on their marriage. When Justin is in the studio making new music, he gets completely consumed and shuts everything else out.”

    Hmm.

    That seems like a major problem for their future, though. Justin’s a musician — he’ll be making music for the rest of his life, and not just ’cause it pays their (very big) bills. It’s his passion! If making his latest album put so much stress on their relationship, how can they sustain that forever?? Seems problematic!

    But either way, the fact that the project has dropped is a big relief for them now. The lovebirds “have been able to finally reconnect more” while on summer vacation to “their favorite place in Idaho,” as they prep to celebrate their son Jack Blues‘ first birthday on Friday. Crazy, right? They grow up so fast! But we digress.

    The insider said the summertime vibes have done wonders for the vocalist and model:

    “There’s a sense of relief on both sides. Justin’s behavior has been more relaxed. He felt a lot of pressure hanging over him and has been in a better mental headspace these last few weeks. He is very happy there have been positive reviews of the album and that fans like it.”

    The Rhode founder, on the other hand, still “takes it day by day and is very patient” with him. So, yeah, that’s a good indicator that they’re not out of the woods just yet! The source noted:

    “There’s still work to be done in their marriage, but they’re in a much better place.”

    That’s good, at least. We just hope their work and music don’t impact them as much again in the future. That’s a recipe for disaster, if so…

    The focus is shifting from generic swag to unique, story-driven objects that do more than just promote. The right tchotchke tells a tale, encapsulating a company’s values and triggering meaningful conversations. But, to do so, they have to be done just right.

    The promotional products market amounted to a staggering $21.2 billion in the U.S. in 2023, according to IBISWorld. These items, ranging from trinkets to leave-behinds, serve as essential tools in the marketing department’s arsenal. Examples of swag usage might include gifts for new hires to foster a positive relationship and make them feel like part of the team or thank-you gifts to express gratitude to clients and vendors.

    The primary goal is to generate interest, foster new relationships and establish connections beyond the confines of email. It’s worth noting that, in this article, we refer to tchotchkes as trinkets sent to “cold” prospects, while we refer to leave-behinds as items left for “warm” leads after an introduction or first meeting.

    When it comes to cold-sending tchotchkes, the challenge is to instill wonder in a single object, compelling the recipient to prioritize a callback. The market is flooded with these promotional products, so it is absolutely critical for entrepreneurs to figure out how to make their business stand out and make a meaningful impression.

    Success in promotional product campaigns is measured by engagement. For cold outreach, whether through email, phone, direct mailers or tchotchkes, the key performance indicator is a prospect engagement rate higher than average. Traditional cold calling boasts a 2% success rate, while direct mailers and email show about 3% and 2% on average, respectively. In contrast, text messages lead with a success rate of about 15%.

    A great example of this was the approach we worked on with our portfolio company, Arbol, to engage with airline and airport executives using Admiral FitzRoy barometers. That item encapsulated the story of the origins of weather insurance and the risk prediction innovations that followed. By ideating a thoughtfully tailored design, Arbol strategically linked its story and brand to tech advancements in parametric weather insurance. This creative yet cost-effective tactic significantly engaged one of the company’s key audiences, demonstrating how impactful results can be achieved with minimal financial investment.

    2. Identify your ideal outcome

    Next, envision the ideal outcome, in which the recipient keeps the item in a prominent place, triggering conversations. Answer key questions through research: What story will be told? Who is the target audience? What action triggers the story? What object triggers that action?

    Customer persona research can help you tailor promotional items that resonate on a personal level with the recipient. For instance, if targeting tech-savvy audiences, consider items that integrate with digital lifestyles. Implement tracking mechanisms, such as QR codes or unique URLs, to measure interaction with the promotional item. This allows for a direct correlation between the item and desired actions, such as website visits or social media engagement.

    Spotify’s “Wrapped” campaign is a good example of this. Each year, Spotify creates personalized year-end review playlists and statistics for its users, showcasing their most played songs, artists and genres. These summaries are presented in a visually appealing and shareable format, encouraging users to share their music tastes on social media. This approach transforms users’ listening habits into a unique, personal item — a digital tchotchke. It capitalizes on the trends of personalization and social sharing. As users share their Wrapped summaries, they not only engage more with Spotify, but also promote the brand to others. This campaign shows how a digital item, much like a traditional physical tchotchke, can effectively enhance brand engagement and foster widespread cultural resonance.

    For digital campaigns like Wrapped, you can encourage sharing by including incentives, such as contests or exclusive content for participants, which can amplify reach. Ultimately, you want to ensure the story your item tells aligns with the core values of both your brand and your target audience, thereby enhancing the likelihood of the item being kept and discussed.

    3. Iterate creatively

    Brainstorm, eliminate, test and refine the chosen tchotchke to ensure it sparks conversations and prompts callbacks. Engage in A/B testing with small segments of your target audience to gauge the impact of different promotional items. This could involve sending out two variations of a product to see which one generates more engagement or feedback. Then, solicit feedback directly from recipients about what they liked or didn’t like about the item, using surveys or follow-up calls. Maintain a database of responses and engagement metrics to refine future campaigns, focusing on creativity and the emotional or practical value provided by the tchotchke.

    We worked with another portfolio company, StoryFit, a storyline intelligence tech company, by sending model DeLorean kits to narrative decision-makers, highlighting the ability of the right story to breathe life into a script. When recipients place the completed model on their office desks, it sparks conversations with co-workers about predictive audience insights. It also left a lasting impression for future collaborations: Our manager received direct feedback from the prospect, saying he appreciated the approach our team took.

    The era of meaningless promotional items is giving way to a new age of purposeful and narrative-driven tchotchkes. Entrepreneurs who invest time and creativity into selecting and crafting these tokens are not only leaving a lasting impression, but also building meaningful connections that go beyond the transactional. Success is measured by engagement, and when it comes to promotional products, that means beginning with a well-thought-out experience and an authentic story to match.
