    ​​​Many parents breathed a collective sigh of relief when they realized their cell phones and tablets could become babysitters, saving them time, energy, and creativity (especially with the soaring rates of human babysitters). Kenneth W. Welch Jr., CEO and Inventor of the Sea Dog Wave Pump and SeaDog Systems, Inc., comments on this problem and offers a solution.

    Today’s children, glued to their electronic devices, feel the need to be constantly entertained. Inanimate objects are their primary companions and communication mediums. Gone are the days when kids kept themselves occupied all day out of the house, riding bikes, playing tag, building forts, and growing their imagination.

    According to SeaDog Systems, as a result, they have lost such critical skill sets such as sharing, teamwork, personal face-to-face communication, and invention. They don’t want to be outside much or spend time interacting with plants and animals. Desensitized to violence per video games, they are losing empathy for the planet and its inhabitants.

    According to sustainable energy inventor Kenneth W. Welch Jr., “Within this type of robotic ME environment, what kind of future generation are we unleashing on the world? Where will the next great inventors come from?” 

    Kenneth W. Welch Jr. feels the need to bring today’s children back to “PIE”. What’s PIE? Says Welch, “PIE is Perception, Imagination, and Extrapolation – the ability to perceive, imagine and apply the concepts that thrive in this world around us and make a difference.”

    What better way to achieve this than to issue an initiative to find the next great inventors. To this end, Welch has issued a “Get your Kid off the Grid” challenge with a special grand prize, a trip for the winning child and parent to Houston, Texas, to spend a day with real inventors working on his new inventions.

    Getting your kid off the grid is also about getting outdoors and exploring together. It’s about taking kids to the zoo or taking them volunteering. It’s about getting them away from their electronic devices and into the real world. It’s about bringing out the inventor in them.

    Mr. Welch knows the importance of inventing in this day and age. He built SeaDog Systems, Inc. around the advancement of his invention, the SeaDog Wave Pump.     U.S. Gain, a division of U.S. Venture, Inc., has announced the promotion of Bryan Nudelbacher and Hardy Sawall as directors of business development within the renewable natural gas (RNG) sector of the business.

    In their new positions, Nudelbacher and Sawall will pursue partnerships with RNG project developers, seek out projects that U.S. Gain can invest in, and negotiate RNG supply contracts from project developers to service U.S. Gain’s growing compressed natural gas (CNG) dispensing capacity.

    Moving Bryan and Hardy into these roles is indicative of the growth of our RNG business and increased focus on sustainability. They are highly invested in meeting with proper agencies to discuss changes in the RFS program as it relates to D3 RINS. We’re excited to have them executing our business strategy, as well as to support them in the next step of their careers.

    Both serve the company as subject matter experts on renewable identification numbers (RINS), and the renewable fuel standard (RFS) and low carbon fuel standard (LCFS) programs.

    Nudelbacher has worked for U.S. Gain since 2011 and was a part of the team that started U.S. Gain. He worked previously as the business development manager, leading significant growth in U.S. Gain’s CNG business throughout the Midwest in addition to implementing the company’s natural gas pricing and supply strategy for U.S. Gain’s nationwide network of CNG stations. He successfully negotiated contracts with fleets and shippers, resulting in more than $25 million of margin and 50 million gallons under contract. He also implemented the company’s first-ever virtual pipeline project to transport CNG via tube trailers to a mobile asphalt plant. Nudelbacher earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

    Sawall has been working in the renewable fuels industry for the last 12 years, including bio-diesel, ethanol, renewable diesel and renewable natural gas. Prior to joining U.S. Gain in 2012, Sawall served as the president of Fusion Renewables and grew sales from $3 million in 2010 to $67 million in 2011. He has a background in managing terminal operations and bio-diesel distribution in the Midwest. Sawall earned his master’s degree in geological engineering and a bachelor’s degree in geoenvironmental engineering from Michigan Tech.

      The Nosh Pit Detroit announces expansion plans for their little green food truck. In January, the Nosh Pit Detroit will be open for dinner service at their new brick and mortar location, 2995 Yemens Street in Hamtramck. Operating hours will be evenings on Thursday through Saturday evenings initially with intentions to expand service hours in the future.

    This month, the Nosh Pit Detroit launched an Indiegogo campaign hinting at the makings of a restaurant and food truck park. “Having a brick and mortar location would allow us to not only provide mobile cuisine but have a location where we can increase our ability to cater and have a place that the Detroiters can count on, year round.  With your contributions, our vision is to not only to have a brick and mortar location for food service, but a location that is large enough to host regular food truck rallies, offer composting services and support our local community.” Donors have the opportunity to receive their very own Nosh Pit T-Shirt, at home dinner parties and can even get a sandwich named after them. “National Geographic recently named Detroit top unexpected city for food lovers in North America and we’re doing our part.     U.S. Gain, a division of U.S. Venture, Inc., has hired Mike Bolin as a business development manager to oversee current and future opportunities on the west coast in a continuing effort to grow the GAIN Clean Fuel compressed natural gas (CNG) network.

    In this position, Bolin will be responsible for continued education to fleets on the benefits of natural gas as a transportation fuel and the various options to access it using Gain’s current network, as well as building out customized solutions throughout the western region of the United States.

    Mike brings more than four decades of fleet knowledge, strategic foresight and customer contacts to our business. He’s a true thought leader, and we’re excited for him to join our team.

    Prior to working at U.S. Gain, Bolin worked as the senior account executive with the Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas). He rose through the ranks and became a lead at the age of 26. Under his leadership, his maintenance facility had the lowest cost per vehicle mile for the entire company, which was held for 10 straight quarters until his promotion into management.

    He went on to support several large CNG fleets including the City of Los Angeles, Orange County Transit Association, Metro Transit Authority (the largest CNG fleet in the nation), Hearst Castle, the Disneyland Resort, Waste Management, and many other cities and schools. Bolin was also a recent recipient of the Energy Solutions Center award for his work with the MTA. During his tenure with the NGV team, there was sustained growth to 145 million therms a year.

    Bolin holds a bachelor’s degree from Biola University in Organizational Leadership, as well as associate degrees in marketing, automotive and diesel. He has also spent time teaching automotive classes at the college level. At Rio Hondo College, he helped start the Alternate Fuel Center and was an instructor for the first ASE F1 Alternate Fuel Training facility in the nation. He is also an ASE master in both the automotive and diesel segments.

    The private space transportation company Zero 2 Infinity, has released today new images of the final design of the Bloon pod, as well as a video that shows the complete flight cycle of the Near Space experience.

    During the past year, Zero 2 Infinity has worked closely with the Barcelona based Elisava School of Design and Engineering on the interior design of the pod. The result consists of an open modular composition and introduces the usage of innovative materials and aesthetics which are customizable for the ultimate experience of the passengers. With over 50 years of legacy, constant innovation and academic excellence, Elisava’s approach has been integral to the development of this project.

    Features like ergonomic shapes, lighting, next generation materials and audiovisual elements for interaction have been key in order to design the first Space Tourism pod ever created in Europe.

    Bloon is configured for a total of six passengers, including two pilots, with individual spaces for each Near Space traveller. The patented pod design by Zero 2 Infinity features large panoramic windows that will allow for an unforgettable exploration. Bloon is a sustainable solution to Space transportation that has no negative impact on the environment. The pod is reusable and, since the balloon uses helium, it ensures a safe mission with no emissions.

    During the design presentation, Zero 2 Infinity announced a collaboration agreement with Ecoalf, who will join Elisava in the coming months to design the apparel for the pilots, the passengers and the operations team of the company.

    Ecoalf is a sustainable fashion brand who pioneered the use of recycled materials on a global scale. The company has developed over 160 fabrics, with sustainability and innovation being the main drivers. The challenge in the upcoming months is to include smart wearables into the design in order to integrate the experience with the passengers and the Near Space pod.

    The Space sector has become more open to private initiatives and is currently living a revolution. Many services are in development from global communication services to meteorological predictions, interconnection of machines through the Internet of Things, and even the possibility of having a daily picture of the entire planet. These advances have paved the way for the creation of hundreds of companies that need efficient and safe transportation services like the ones Zero 2 Infinity is offering and developing.

    Zero 2 Infinity, a private company headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, with subsidiaries around the world, is radically simplifying access to Space. It is the only company in Europe specialized in the elevation to the Edge of Space of components that require testing and certifying in Space conditions.     ​​In April, SoilSurfer.com was launched with the intent to unite urban farmers with urban landowners, anywhere. The mission: Help support positive environmental change and economic growth in cities, by making it easier for urban farmers and property owners to connect.

    The project is the brainchild of Reginald Blackledge, a California-based designer who took on Soil Surfer as a creative pursuit in his free time. Coming from a family of farmers and ranchers, Blackledge wants to bring the experience of farming to those without land.

    Using a peer-to-peer “community” marketplace, Soil Surfer aims to ignite interest in urban farming to a global audience, and lets urban property owners get paid seamlessly through its platform. The new service has the potential to lower the barrier of entry for both urban farmers, and property owners, by providing a simple platform that anyone with an Internet connection can use. 

    While urban farming and collaborative consumption are becoming more popular, the barriers to entry may be preventing wider participation. For example, there is no standardized process for garden-space sharing transactions. And, while conventional methods might work in some neighborhoods, the process is not always clear, and may be confusing for people just starting out. 

    Soil Surfer has a member rating system, meaning that landowners can review feedback about a particular urban farmer, and, likewise, urban farmers can read reviews about other farmers experiences with a landowner. This two-way review feature is intended to encourage transparency, and reward good behavior.

    With any arrangement between two or more parties, there is legal and liability issues to consider; however, Blackledge says, “Today, people can rent anything from surfboards to private jets, so I don’t think renting a spot in someone’s yard is too much of a far fetched idea.” Regardless, the website encourages members to play it safe and check with state, local and community policy about urban farming and land use, as well as their insurance coverage.

    “There’s likely millions of acres of unproductive urban and peri-urban land that could be used for local food production, and reducing our carbon footprint is only one of the many benefits,” says Blackledge. He thinks that Soil Surfer has the potential to bring urban farming into the mainstream, and will be a win for urban farmers, landowners, communities, and the environment.

Foodbuy is the newest member and the only foodservice sector supporter of World Coffee Research.

    Foodbuy and Compass Group have a commitment to three life-sustaining priorities: humanity, sustainability and wellness,” says Tony Shearer, Foodbuy’s Chief Executive Officer. “Supporting World Coffee Research allows us to take action on these priorities and directly impact coffee farmers, the growing process and the coffee many of our customers drink every day.”.

    A major focus of WCR’s work in 23 countries is making the coffee plant more resilient to the threats of the 21st century, including climate change. With $20,000 in new funding from Foodbuy, World Coffee Research will be able to extend its research into the molecular and genetic causes of quality, productivity, and disease resistance in the coffee plant, which will help make coffee farming more profitable and less risky, and therefore more sustainable for coffee farmers and for coffee drinkers.

    Without investment in research and development like that conducted by WCR, it’s expected that up to 50% of the land where high-quality Arabica coffee currently grows will be unsuitable by 2050, with significant consequences for the people who grow coffee and for the environment.

    Farmer Brothers, a national coffee roaster and distributor, is a WCR member and partners with Foodbuy to provide its Artisan Collection™ of premium, sustainable coffee to hospitals and colleges around the country. Through the Artisan Collection, Farmer Brothers and Foodbuy are making great, sustainable coffee available to a wide audience. Their joint support of WCR will fund research to help grow, protect and enhance quality coffee supplies for the future.

    • Tools to give farmers better information about existing coffee varieties so they can plant the coffee varieties that are best suited to their farm, such as the first-ever catalog of coffee varieties for Central America
    • The world’s largest coffee seed exchange and comparison of varieties, to give farmers better choices about which coffee varieties to plant
    • A long-term program to breed the next generation of coffee varieties that are climate resilient, disease and pest tolerant, high producing, and truly high quality. Improved coffee varieties can increase a farmer’s include by up to 50%.
