Bright Feeds, Connecticut’s New Food Waste Recycler, Opens Plant in Berlin

    [ad_1]

Licensed for 450 tons of food waste per day, Bright Feeds’ inaugural plant converts unwanted food into animal feed—reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving companies and municipalities money.

    Press Release

    Nov 3, 2022

Bright Feeds, a New England-based green startup, opened its first food waste processing plant in Berlin, Connecticut, last week. Licensed to process 450 tons of food waste per day for the next 10 years, the plant is positioned to fill a waste processing gap left by the July 2022 closure of the MIRA plant in nearby Hartford.

“With Bright Feeds here, we have a bright future in Connecticut,” says Katie Dykes, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). “I’m excited about what this could mean, not just for Berlin, but for helping Connecticut solve this waste disposal crisis in a really exciting way.”

Bright Feeds’ 25,000-square-foot plant uses cutting-edge artificial intelligence and drying technology to convert unwanted food into an all-natural, nutritious soy and corn substitute for animal feed. Bright Feeds developed its proprietary drying technology with engineers at Boston College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. It uses best-in-class technology sourced from around the globe, and manufactured and assembled in the U.S.

At capacity, the environmental impact of the Berlin plant is equivalent to removing 22,000 cars from the road every year. The carbon-negative process uses less energy and is more scalable than other food waste recycling solutions.

“Not only are we solving the food waste problem, but we’re doing it in a way that’s more efficient than anything else commercially available,” says Bright Feeds President and COO Tim Rassias.

Food waste is a key contributor to climate change:

    • Globally, if food waste were a country, it would be the third greatest greenhouse gas emitter after China and the U.S. (World Resources Institute).
    • In the U.S., about 40% of food is never eaten—and nearly 70% of that waste typically ends up in landfills or greenhouse gas-emitting incinerators (USDAEPA).
    • New England produced over 2 million tons of food waste in 2019, with 520,000 tons produced in Connecticut, where food makes up about 22% of disposed waste (Connecticut waste study).

“41% of what we burn and bury every year is actually valuable material: It’s food scraps, it’s yard waste, it’s all kinds of organics that are incredibly valuable and can be repurposed,” says Dykes. “The Bright Feeds model is, for the first time, at scale, turning food waste into a food source for animals, which is one of the best uses for organic material under Connecticut’s waste hierarchy.”

According to the EPA, feeding animals is the top solution for reducing food waste after feeding hungry people.

“Yes, we can turn it into compost. Yes, we can turn it into energy. Those are all good—but the best thing is to take this stuff and preserve it as food and use it,” says Bright Feeds Board Chairman and investor Scott Kalb. “That’s what we’re doing.”

Thanks to its pioneering technology, Bright Feeds can accept a wider variety of food waste than its competitors: not just dry, grain-based waste, but also vegetables, fruit, and other wet waste.

“We’re a one-stop shop for food waste,” says CEO Jonathan Fife. “We built our whole process around taking a variety of inputs and producing a consistent, high-quality feed.”

Using a variety of food waste enables Bright Feeds to consistently produce a highly nutritious product. Bright Feeds then sells the meal to animal feed manufacturers who use it as an ingredient in their feed.

Bright Feeds keeps food out of the waste stream—and saves money for food producers, waste management companies, and municipalities.

New England’s ongoing waste crisis calls for creative solutions. With shrinking landfill space, higher gas prices, and multiplying tipping fees, businesses and municipalities face increasing challenges on what to do with their trash.

Bright Feeds enables the responsible disposal of unwanted food for a fraction of typical tipping fees.

The Berlin plant is located between I-91 and I-84, near USA Waste’s new recycling center and with easy access to New York City and Massachusetts. Bright Feeds also has a collection point in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and others in the works. The company plans to scale up with additional plants first in New England and then throughout the country.

  • Industry Association Reveals Top 2023 Bathroom Design Trends

Industry Association Reveals Top 2023 Bathroom Design Trends

    [ad_1]

What’s trending in residential bathrooms? Six hundred respondents to an online survey – including designers, dealers, manufacturers, remodelers and architects – answered that question in the leading industry group’s just-released 2023 Design Trends study.

The National Kitchen & Bath Association’s annual report provides insights to what homeowners are requesting and what professionals are delivering. These are the trends the association and its respondents see for the new year.

    Overview

Like kitchens, “bathrooms are bigger and more involved,” noted NKBA research director Tricia Zach. “Creating spa-like bathrooms that enhance homeowner experience while allowing seamless aging in place” capability was a major focus of the responses, her report shared. As with kitchens, technology to enhance functionality and comfort was a strong related trend. So were enlarged spaces for more accessibility and a relaxing feel.

    Opening Space

“Top bathroom trends involve opening space by removing bathtubs for larger showers, taking down walls and creating a connected dressing area,” the report noted. A surprising 77% of respondents were removing tubs to increase shower sizing. For those bathrooms still getting tubs, 74% are free-standing and 68% are deep soakers.

Removing walls to increase the primary bathroom’s footprint was a trend for 63% of the replies. Connecting to a closet or dressing area (58%) or adding a laundry space (34%) were popular too. Additional comfort features include extra seating, coffee stations, workout areas and small refrigerators.

    Sustainability Counts

Sustainability concerns reported in the kitchen trends section of the report carry into the bathroom as well. That shows up in a preference for all LED lighting (82%) and increased natural light with larger low-E doors and windows (55%). EPA WaterSense-rated faucets, showerheads and toilets were specified by 56% of respondents. Also showing up in the sustainability column are EnergyStar certified appliances and ventilation, as well as recycled countertops and flooring, and FSC certified and formaldehyde-free cabinets.

    Technology Enhancements

“Homeowners are excited about heated floors, temperature / moisture controls, voice / app controls, smart toilets / bidets and smart mirrors,” the study reports. Heated floors that can be controlled by phone mean warming up the bathroom on your way home from a wintry hike or from below the covers in the morning and were cited by 69% of respondents. Temperature controls for shower and flooring were popular with 67% and sensor humidity controls were cited by 55% of the respondents.

Digital showering that lets one or more user program their preferred flow rate, temperature and mode, as well as potentially controlling steam showering, was a 23% preference in the study, but a strong 44% want the ability to start their shower with their phone. “Lighting and physical therapy options for showers – especially for active people” was especially noted in the responses.

Integrated lighting and internet screens in bathroom mirrors for convenience were mentioned, as were leak detectors, vanity charging and towel warming.

    Wellness Features

Wellness features overlap and are often enabled with technology enhancements. For example, chromotherapy was selected by 25%, preset lighting schemes for different times of day got a 29% and the above-noted steam showering and bidet functionality (45%) are all wellness-driven by wellness-focused respondents.

Low maintenance, nonporous quartz countertops (82%) are also definitely a wellness choice. Floating vanities (71%) add accessibility, another wellness facet. Bathroom faucets reflect wellness considerations too with 61% opting for accessible lever handles, 48% choosing motion and 36% going for touch or tap. A voice-activated faucet preference showed up at 12% and will likely increase as more models become available. (I’m hoping to see at least one manufacturer offer a voice control bathroom faucet with temperature adjustment capability at February’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Show; Moen introduced this feature to kitchen faucets several KBIS expos ago, but I still haven’t seen a bathroom version.)

A very strong 75% of trend study respondents are choosing heated flooring, with ceramic or porcelain tile being the surface leader (71%), more than double the closest second, luxury vinyl wood plank (33%), choice. LVP, as it’s often called, is softer underfoot, but some versions have had issues with off-gassing risks.

Large format tile (59%) and slab (40%) – “requiring fewer grout lines and maintenance,” the report observed — were the top tub and shower surround materials, making life easier for users.

As noted above, showers are getting larger, with 82% of survey respondents designing them for two-person use. They’re often open (55%) with no door, or they’re part of a wet room (35%) that might also encompass a tub. Going for an aging-friendly spa feel, these showers often have a seat (79%), linear shower drain (78%), hand-held shower head (77%), zero clearance entry (66%), grab bars (65%), and multiple shower heads (64%) with one of them being a rain head (58%). Steam shows up for 41% of the spaces, with body sprays, music, heating and chromotherapy also enhancing them.

“Windows above tubs (51%) and skylights (37%) will have high usage to maximize natural light,” the trend study observes. Ideally, they’ll have smart controls for greater accessibility. Reaching a window above a soaker tub is no easy feat for users with upper body weakness or balance issues.

  • New Research Shows Economic, Psychosocial and Data-Management Barriers Inhibit Farmer Participation in Carbon Markets

New Research Shows Economic, Psychosocial and Data-Management Barriers Inhibit Farmer Participation in Carbon Markets

    [ad_1]

Producer-focused changes in carbon ecosystem services could unlock vast potential to sequester carbon in the heartland

    Press Release

    Oct 27, 2022 08:00 EDT

Farm Journal’s Trust In Food™ released its inaugural “Ready or Not? Ag Carbon Markets and U.S. Farmers” report, highlighting perspectives from 500 U.S. row crop producers on pathways and barriers to participating in carbon ecosystems.

The majority of farmers surveyed report serious concern about overcoming technical and financial roadblocks to success in carbon markets. Producers fear that costs will outweigh benefits; that ongoing compliance will require too high a burden; that existing conservation ag practices will not be compensated fairly; that data will not be handled appropriately or will be difficult to collect; or that upfront investments will be a barrier to entry.

“Our initial findings suggest that even the most carbon-curious farmers are signaling that their participation under current market conditions would require prohibitive investments of time, effort and resources without fair financial and market returns,” said Amy Skoczlas Cole, executive vice president of Trust In Food. “Unless the carbon market value chain takes producers’ perspectives seriously, we fear a critical tool for addressing climate change and increasing farm resilience will fall seriously short of its potential.”

Key findings from the report include:

    • Farmers are aware of carbon markets but not ready to engage. After several years, 97% of farmers surveyed are not ready to participate in carbon markets, though 93% are aware they exist.
    • Producers want credit for existing practices. Additionality has been a stumbling block for carbon ecosystems; 69% of producers say getting credit for preexisting practices is “very important” for evaluating their participation, second only to annual payment amount per acre (73%).
    • Data capture, management and validation is fragmented. Sixty-two percent of farmers surveyed are not fully digitally integrated for the purpose of managing farm information, and more than 70% do not use any software-based sustainability or conservation tools. Even with digital infrastructure, the methodology for validating results and the carbon-holding capacity of soils has not been standardized and might vary dramatically across geographies, climates and certifying bodies.

Going forward the carbon market ecosystem must create more transparency and better incentives that align with operations on farms and ranches to foster adoption. Trusted advisors, retailers and extension services play a role in preparing producers to capitalize on carbon market opportunities. This preparation includes more consistent and broader data capture and management so producers can monitor and measure practice changes.

The report is part of Trust In Food’s carbon insights platform that analyzes psychosocial, economic and logistical challenges producers face in adopting climate-smart practices. Anchored by its Human Dimensions of Change Toolkit, the carbon insights platform provides:

    • Producer sentiment about carbon and other climate-smart programs
    • Practice adoption triggers
    • Differentiating factors farmers evaluate when choosing a program
    • Co-affinities that align with positive or negative carbon attitudes
    • Producers’ perceived barriers to market participation

4ocean and U.S. Polo Assn. Celebrate Ocean-Positive Partnership and 60,000-Pound Milestone on International Sustainability Day

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Oct 26, 2022 07:00 EDT

4ocean, a purpose-driven B Corp dedicated to ending the ocean plastic crisis, and U.S. Polo Assn., the official brand of the United States Polo Association (USPA), are celebrating a milestone in their partnership on International Sustainability Day 2022. Together, the two entities have removed 60,000 pounds of trash from the world’s oceans through 4ocean’s Certified Cleanup Partnership Program.

4ocean and U.S. Polo Assn. have been working together towards ocean-positive sustainability since October 2021 and set a goal to remove a total of 60,000 pounds of plastic from the oceans, rivers, and coastlines around the world. With the help of 147 crew members and 18 ocean vessels, most of the 60,000 pounds of waste were pulled in Indonesia and Guatemala across 17 locations. The amount of trash removed through the partnership is equivalent to the weight of approximately 60 polo ponies!

This ocean-positive project is a component of U.S. Polo Assn.’s overarching sustainability initiative, USPA Life, which works towards reducing the environmental impact of our business for future generations. USPA Life offers a global and growing selection of U.S. Polo Assn. apparel, footwear and accessories with sustainable attributes.

“It’s 4ocean’s mission to work with companies who share a similar mindset towards the ocean plastic pollution crisis and to work together cleaning the world’s waterways and coastlines,” said Alex Schulze, founder of 4ocean. “Through this partnership, I’m stoked to say that U.S. Polo Assn. has successfully met their goal of pulling 60,000 pounds of trash from the ocean.”

Earlier this month, USPA Global Licensing Inc., the company that manages the multi-billion-dollar U.S. Polo Assn. brand, participated in a Beach Cleanup hosted by 4ocean in Riviera Beach, Florida. With the help of 20 volunteers and cleaning supplies provided by 4ocean, almost 40 pounds of trash were removed from one of South Florida’s local beaches.

“I am proud to share that our meaningful partnership between U.S. Polo Assn. and 4ocean hit the huge milestone of 60,000 pounds just as we approached International Sustainability Day 2022,” said J. Michael Prince, President and CEO of USPA Global Licensing Inc. “We want our consumers across 190 countries to know that U.S. Polo Assn.’s long-term sustainability journey includes activities around the world and here at home.”

  • How Small Companies Can Contribute to Global Change

How Small Companies Can Contribute to Global Change

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Small businesses can play an important role in addressing global challenges using their unique perspectives and resources. This is because they can generate new ideas, solve problems and create new products. They can also help to bring down global emissions. By doing so, they can assist in reducing the impact of climate change on the planet.

Small businesses need to be well structured and have a clear purpose to contribute substantially to local and global economies. By understanding their industry, stakeholders, and environment, they can identify opportunities and seize chances to make a positive impact. Below are some ways small businesses can help create solutions to global challenges that will benefit everyone.

Related: 10 Ways Small Businesses Can Give Back Without Breaking the Bank

    1. Dynamism in the marketplace

Most small businesses can respond to shifting economic conditions and counter them quickly. This is because small businesses are typically very focused on their customers. They not only understand the ‘s requirements but also cooperate with the consumers to produce the best goods possible through customer feedback programs, which many start-ups employ.

Because of this consumer loyalty, small businesses are more likely to survive tough economic times, which can aid in the development of local economies. Small firms may be less at risk of losing money during economic downturns since they generate less income than larger companies.

    2. Environment conservation

One of the most talked about challenges facing the global world right now is environmental conservation, and I believe that with the emergence of small businesses, there is a likelihood that environmental conservation can be solved. Small businesses come in handy when dealing with critical environmental issues.

For instance, local businesses tend to set up shops in pre-existing buildings. This alone will minimize the destructive behavior of digging up land for construction. Larger enterprises and organizations frequently have infrastructure created for them, resulting in less green space in society and more dangerous materials. Because tiny enterprises require just a little room, they use the available space, which is what environmental conservation is all about.

Moreover, small businesses have a fruitful relationship with other small manufacturers regarding supply chain and logistics issues, resulting in cheaper products being produced. As a result, it will have a lesser severe environmental impact. Finally, small enterprises tend to locate their community centers in areas where it is more common to walk or ride. As a consequence, fewer customers and staff will have to drive to the establishment.

Related: How Startups and Small Businesses Can Address Climate Change in the Workplace

    3. Community development

Small enterprises play an essential role in the community since they contribute to local economies by stimulating development and turmoil in their neighborhood. The issue of unemployment can be addressed through the establishment of small businesses. These small businesses create a pool of skilled and semi-skilled workforce who can come up with mind-blowing ideas to solve major societal problems.

Small businesses require limited education to start, giving the population lacking credible education an equal chance to compete with large companies in the global market. Small enterprises attract people who create new goods or adopt new solutions to old problems. Larger enterprises are also huge beneficiaries of the emergence of small businesses because they tend to outsource talent from small businesses to drive their sales.

    4. Revenue collection

When consumers do most of their business with small enterprises, they are more likely to contribute to the community. A successful local firm makes much money, necessitating higher tax payments, including local property taxes. Local police, fire, and education systems may use this money to invest in the community. A successful may also increase neighborhood property values, benefiting local residents and raising property taxes for government agencies.

For small enterprises, sales taxes are still another source of revenue. Special taxing districts that concentrate on specific initiatives like lighting and sidewalk repairs to revitalize historic commercial areas and attract new consumers might be built on the support of local companies.

Your Fast-Food Burger May Soon Come Wrapped in Seaweed

    [ad_1]

Most fast-food burgers and chicken sandwiches come wrapped in grease-resistant packaging that is terrible for the .

But researchers at Flinders University in , along with a German biomaterials company, one • fıve, are developing next-generation biopolymer coating materials made of seaweed that could solve packaging pollution.

Grease-resistant paper is often coated with plastic and other environmentally harmful chemicals, such as polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). But the new paper prototype, which takes extracts from certain seaweed, helps prevent food from sticking to the paper while also serving up an environmentally circular solution to the problem.

“We are able to reduce harmful plastic pollution with this product, and we are also using feedstock that is environmentally regenerative,” said Claire Gusko, Co-Founder of one • fıve.

Many in the fast-food industry are aware of the chemicals in their packaging.

Earlier this year, Restaurant Brands International, which owns , and , announced plans to roll out sustainable packaging by 2025.

Still no word on whether the Whopper will come wrapped in seaweed packaging.

BayEcotarium Ocean Museum Project in San Francisco Wins 2022 Global Future Design Award

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Oct 20, 2022 21:00 PDT

The transformation of the Aquarium of the Bay into the world’s first comprehensive Ocean and Climate Literacy Living Museum, the BayEcotarium has won the 2022 APR Global Future Silver Design Award. A jury of architects from around the world reviewed hundreds of submissions across various categories of exterior and interior design, construction, materiality functionality, sustainability and environmental perspectives to select the winners. The overwhelming creativity exuded in the range of designs exceeded previous submissions over the years. This highly competitive review process culminated in the jury’s decision criteria.

Designed by Paris-based XTU architects led by Anouk Legendre, the Bay Ecotarium/Climatorium draws its inspiration from the native American Ohlone shell mounds, ocean geometry, fish scales and iridescence. The bio-mimetic organic forms gird the San Francisco Embarcadero at its current site, protruding into the ocean in a flexible configuration of a floating structure docked via a pressure tunnel. At the core of the BayEcotarium is a living aquarium with its shark tubes holding 2 million gallons of saltwater and 30,000 live animals. The ocean offers a lens into the climate cruises, habitat destruction, Greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, and melting polar ice caps resulting in sea level rise that will tip past the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold. “Winning this award for the second year in a row reinforces the endorsement in our vision and collective resolve in realizing this critical initiative that generates Climate Awareness leading to informed Action,” says George Jacob, President and CEO of BayEcotarium, who envisioned this unique generational environmental edifice. The aquarium has attracted millions of visitors over the decades and now looks to re-invigorate its future to address climate change and resilience.

BayEcotarium Hosts Primary and Final Berkeley Innovation Forum Sessions

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Oct 15, 2022 11:00 PDT

More than 100 global CEOs and leaders of some of the world’s most influential companies reflected on recent innovations and actions to combat climate change at a special dinner for the opening of the Fifth Berkeley Innovation Forum. The Smithsonian-affiliated Aquarium of the Bay hosted the primary session, and the final session of the event took place at another branch of the BayEcotarium, the Bay Model in Sausalito.

The 5th annual US-India Conference took place at the Speaker Forum on the University of California, Berkeley campus. Executives, professionals, academics, students from both India and the U.S., and key members of U.S.-India trade and economic bodies attended the dinner to exchange ideas in an open forum.

“The world is changing at a quick and dramatic pace, and new orientations and alignments are needed from the world’s major economies,” said George Jacob, President and CEO of BayEcotarium. “India and the U.S. must work together to shape and ensure mutual prosperity and peace around the globe.”

    R. Mukundan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Tata Chemicals in India, spoke about the importance of corporate responsibility to support climate resiliency in an interview that evening. “We believe that conservation, protecting biodiversity and working on climate change cannot be done by one company,” Mukundan said. “It has to be done by partnership and ecosystems. If by coming to these forums we can connect with like-minded people, we would like to find them, work with them, and share what we know.”

At the closing session held at the Bay Model in Sausalito, Professor Solomon Darwin (Haas School of Business University of California Berkeley) opened the final session. Presentations included industrial activities on the planet, how sustainability is key for the future, and best business practices to thrive in the modern business world. The forum included time for open discussion and question-and-answer sessions.

U of I, UC Santa Barbara and Dow scientists crack upcycling plastics to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, advancing a recent Science study

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Oct 5, 2022

Scientists from the University of Illinois Urbana-ChampaignUniversity of California, Santa Barbara and Dow developed a breakthrough process to transform the most widely produced plastic — polyethylene (PE) — into the second-most widely produced plastic, polypropylene (PP), which will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

The new study published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society announces a series of coupled catalytic reactions that transform PE, which is #2 and #4 plastic that make up 29% of the world’s plastic consumption, into the building block propylene that is the key ingredient to produce PP, also known as #5 plastic that accounts for close to 25% of the world’s plastic consumption.

This study establishes a proof-of-concept for upcycling PE plastic with more than 95% selectivity into propylene. The researchers have built a reactor that creates a continuous flow of propylene that can be converted into PP easily using current technology — making this discovery scalable and rapidly implementable.

Why this matters: Preliminary analysis suggests that if just 20% of the world’s PE could be recovered and converted via this route, it could represent a potential savings of GHG emissions comparable to taking 3 million cars off the road.

“If we are to upcycle a significant fraction of the over 100 million tons of plastic waste we generate each year, we need solutions that are highly scalable,” Damien Guironnet, Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, said. “Our team demonstrated the chemistry in a flow reactor we developed to produce propylene highly selectively and continuously. This is a key advance to address the immense volume of the problem that we are facing.”

  • BluWave-ai and Summerside Deliver 100% Solar Powered Concert During Bryan Adams’ 2022 Canadian Tour

BluWave-ai and Summerside Deliver 100% Solar Powered Concert During Bryan Adams’ 2022 Canadian Tour

    [ad_1]

First 100% Directly Connected, Time Shifted, Solar Energy Powered Indoor Rock Concert in North America

    Press Release

    Sep 12, 2022

The City of Summerside and BluWave-ai completed the first 100% time-shifted solar energy powered concert in North America. This feat took place on the first stop of the 2022 Canadian Tour of globally renowned Canadian musician, Bryan Adams, at the Credit Union Place in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada from 8-11 pm on Tuesday, August 31st. The concert was run indoors at night leveraging solar and battery solutions. This milestone for BluWave-ai and Summerside is building off of their shared project, the Canadian Smart Grid AI Center of Excellence at the City of Summerside, announced earlier this year.

Leveraging the BluWave-ai energy optimization platform running in the cloud, BluWave-ai Edge and BluWave-ai Center, the partners were able to predict solar production during the day of August 31st. Through this, they could store sufficient solar capacity in a 890 kWh battery to cover the projected energy demand of the concert such as lighting, audio equipment, and air conditioning. With a day of immense solar fluctuations, the system was able to operate the building in advance of the concert while storing enough solar energy to drive the concert in the evening.

Once the concert started, the automated platform took over to detect the increased load created by the concert and peripheral elements and managed the stored solar energy to supply the concert load over the 3 hour period.

Below is how the system played out on concert day:

    • The AI platform left enough battery capacity unfilled during the night of August 30th to August 31st to fill the battery with solar production at the Summerside CUP on the day of the Bryan Adams concert, August 31st.
    • From approximately 8:00 am to 12:00 pm AST the battery was loaded with 496kWh of coincidental solar produced energy by setting thresholds. This way, solar generated over capacity was moved to the battery for the concert in the evening while the rest of the facility could run on a combo of Summerside Wind Power and regular grid power.
    • Baselining of the overall facility power usage from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm AST on days without a concert showed the electricity load. During this time averaged 718.5 kWh for the facility with no concert.
    • During the 3 hour concert the facility used 1173 kWh. The total incremental energy from the concert was 454.5 kWh compared to regular days.
    • During the concert the BluWave-ai system delivered 496kWh of time-shifted green solar power via the battery or an average of 165kW per hour more, covering the entire needs of the concert and associated climate control.

To showcase the performance of the BluWave-ai Canadian Smart Grid Center of excellence which works with Summerside’s wind farm, solar array, battery storage, grid connection, and smart metering assets, the cloud-based AI optimization platform was able to deliver a 100% solar powered concert with less than 24 hours to configure, commission, and operationalize to support the new demand of the system to support the green rock concert.

In November 2021, BluWave‐ai and the City of Summerside announced the completion of the first-end to-end AI‐optimized grid in North America, the first industry proof point of a scalable system applicable to entire regions and countries for transitioning energy networks toward maximizing the use of renewable assets. In 2021, BluWave-ai was awarded a major contract to advance Summerside’s system utility manager software to integrate a new 26‐megawatt Solar and Battery project.

The test during the Bryan Adams August 31st concert used a subset of the Summerside smart grid and AI control system to manage operations, perfectly matching solar powering the concert load.

“As a testament to the robustness and flexibility of the BluWave-ai energy optimization platform, and with very short notice, the system was able to manage energy use at the arena to supply the concert with 100% solar energy,” said Devashish Paul, CEO of BluWave-ai. “Once the constraints were identified, the automated platform took over. This proved a compelling use case for time-shifting solar energy which is applicable for large commercial enterprises, electric vehicle fleets and for supporting the grid with demand response and resiliency without resorting to diesel backup generators and shows another example of our company’s live real-time deployments on streaming data and renewable energy assets.”

“Summerside is committed to growing our net zero economy and leading PEI’s Clean Tech Innovations has invested in the smart grid, building renewable energy generation and creating the CUP Arena microgrid with the solar and battery energy storage system from Samsung C&T. We brought in BluWave-ai as a partner to set up the Canadian Smart Grid AI Center of Excellence and provide the AI-enabled control of the city smart grid,” said Mike Thususka, Summerside Director of Economic Development. “To showcase our capabilities as a leading North American municipality, we decided to deliver a 100% green solar energy concert experience at our arena. We continue to invest in our green future and by 2023 with the Sunbank solar and storage facility, Summerside will be running off 70% renewable energy with an eye to hit 100% in the very near future. Industries setting up operations in Summerside may be eligible for various clean tech and first customer experiences using Summerside’s leading edge infrastructure which we demonstrated at the concert working with our partners BluWave-ai.”

“SDTC has been a proud supporter of BluWave-ai’s data-driven AI technology since 2018,” said Leah Lawrence, President of SDTC. “What better way to showcase the power of this homegrown Canadian innovation than by running a major concert event from one of our country’s rock icons off of solar energy! Congratulations to the team at BluWave-ai and the City of Summerside for leading the way in making the entertainment industry more sustainable as we move towards Net Zero.”

Even following a partially cloudy day, Summerside and BluWave-ai delivered a 100% solar energy power for the Bryan Adams concert by time shifting solar energy over-production to the evening and matching it to the concert load. This proved that the entertainment and sports events industry can run their events without depending on elaborate carbon-emitting diesel generation backup systems for resiliency when solar powered batteries can be connected to events. In Summerside’s case, the battery and solar generation are on site. For concert locations without this capability, batteries can be charged off-site and moved to the venue by electric trucking rather than by installing diesel generators moved by diesel-powered trucks, enabling a similar 100% clean operation.

To learn more about decarbonizing your city, utility or enterprise applications, please contact info@bluwave-ai.com.

BluWave-ai Research Note: According to existing public documentation of equivalent sized or larger solar installations at sporting and entertainment facilities across North America, none of the facilities which exceed Summerside’s solar capacity have sufficient storage capacity to run a 3 hour 400+ kWh concert event with purely stored, locally generated solar energy.

2022 Set to Be Record-Breaking Year for Great Lakes Cruising

    [ad_1]

After two-year pause, Great Lakes cruising returns with nine ships.

    Press Release

    Jun 16, 2022

After a two-year pause, Great Lakes cruising is back with more cruise ships and passengers than ever, according to Cruise the Great Lakes. In 2022, cruise passengers will make nearly 150,000 visits to Great Lakes ports. The number of passengers is up by more than 25% from 2019.

“Great Lakes cruising makes travel easy, with no need to pack and unpack here. Travelers will find great value and a quality experience where someone else can do the driving,” said David Lorenz, Chair of Cruise the Great Lakes, and Vice President of Travel Michigan. “Great Lakes cruising offers a unique two-nation destination experience including a diversity of people and places.”

Cruise the Great Lakes is the region’s cruise marketing program focused on attracting more passengers. The region’s Governors and Premiers launched Cruise the Great Lakes, and it is now managed by the Conference of Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers. Partners such as cruise lines, ports, convention and visitor bureaus, chambers of commerce, associations and others work toward shared goals with participating States and Provinces.

Cruising on the Great Lakes is a growth industry and brings economic value to the region’s ports and communities. In 2022, nine ships will be cruising on the Great Lakes, including Pearl Seas, American Queen Voyages, St. Lawrence Cruise Lines and, for the first time ever, Viking Cruises. Altogether these cruises will generate an economic impact of over US$120 million.

Great Lakes cruises have fewer than 200 passengers on average and typically each calls on 5-10 ports around the region. Cruises visit both large and small communities such as Cleveland, Ohio; Duluth, Minnesota; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Detroit, Muskegon and Mackinac Island, Michigan; Thunder Bay, Toronto and Niagara Falls, Ontario; and Chicago, Illinois.

    Learn more at www.cruisethegreatlakes.com

“Cruising brings a real energy to our port and downtown Cleveland,” said Will Friedman, President and CEO of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority. “The port has invested in a new customs facility that along with our great city will make Cleveland a cornerstone for cruising in the region for years to come.”

“Great Lakes cruises are a perfect way to introduce new visitors to Wisconsin,” said Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary-designee Anne Sayers. “Whether cruisers are interested in culinary adventures, world-class golf, discovering rich history and cultures showcased at festivals and museums and more, Wisconsin is ready to make sure they make memories that will last a lifetime.”

“2022 is a record-breaking year for Great Lakes cruising in Detroit,” said Kyle Burleson, Director of Port Operations for the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority. “We will have 50 stops in 2022, with a previous record of 25. Piggybacking on the increased activity from cruise ships, the Port Authority is hosting a ‘Port Day’ event on July 9 in coordination with a cruise ship stop to highlight the legacy of cruising on the Great Lakes, both as a commuter option as it was in the past, as well as the recreational activity it is today. We are excited to share this legacy with the general public and invite everyone to come to the Detroit Riverwalk in front of the DWCPA offices to learn more and enjoy the fun activities planned.”

“The growth of cruise shipping and the arrival of vessels like the Viking Octantis and Ocean Navigator on Lake Superior this year has elevated our communities, the Lake Superior basin, and the entire Great Lakes region to reach new global travel audiences as a premier must-see destination. This tourism segment growth demonstrates the power of Canadian and US communities, States and Provinces and industry around the Great Lakes working collaboratively,” said Paul Pepe, Manager at Tourism Thunder Bay.

“Like so many Great Lakes cities, the Muskegon Port has a rich history to share with travelers. Passengers are interested to hear about the Michigan Lumber Barons and all the products made here. They are delighted to see the lighthouses and the beautiful freshwater beaches on the West Michigan coast,” said Cindy Larsen, President of the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce.

“Global travelers are taking notice of Milwaukee. With our growing cruise ship visits and turnaround service from Pearl Seas and Viking, Port Milwaukee stands ready and eager to show international passengers all the great things our city offers,” said Port Milwaukee Director Adam Tindall-Schlicht. “With summer festivals on the shores of Lake Michigan, attractions throughout our neighborhoods, and arts and culture to spare, we know that cruise passengers will fall in love with Milwaukee upon their arrival. We are grateful for Cruise the Great Lakes and our many partners for establishing Milwaukee as an exciting hub for recreation, tourism, and economic success.”

For indoor and outdoor use, the Mosquito & Fly is a plant-powered aerosol spray designed to quickly kill mosquitoes and flies, with the ability to kill over 20 other bothersome bugs, such as drain flies, fruit flies, gnats, and more.

Powered by geraniol and lemongrass oil, this spray kills by contact and, when used as directed, is safe to use around kids and pets. The aerosol is propelled by carbon dioxide (CO2) and does not emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or lower indoor air quality. Once empty, the container is recyclable. Available now at Wondercide.com and Amazon.com.

    NEW Flea & Tick Products

The entire lineup of the new Flea & Tick products features natural cedarwood and peppermint oil with a fresh peppermint scent. In further innovation, the Flea & Tick Collar and Flea & Tick Spot On offer pet parents added convenience and a safe alternative to conventional spot drops and collars when used as directed. Flea & Tick Spot On, Collar, and Shampoo will be available for purchase online at Wondercide.com, Amazon.com, Chewy.com, and pet specialty retailers in the U.S.

    • The Flea & Tick Shampoo is Wondercide’s first liquid shampoo. Made for dogs and cats four months or older, it kills fleas and ticks by contact and repels them, making the shampoo an excellent first step in treating an active infestation or as part of an ongoing flea-and-tick maintenance routine. The shampoo is free of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and helps soothe itchy skin from bug bites.
    • Flea & Tick Collar comes in two versions – one for dogs (up to 23″ neck)  and one for cats (up to 13″ neck). The water-resistant collars are designed for pets four months or older and offer up to four months of continuous protection against fleas and ticks, up to one month of protection against mosquitoes. The collars feature a breakaway safety feature that will protect pets if a bit too much tension is applied.
    • Flea & Tick Spot On is designed for dogs and cats three months or older. Each box contains three monthly applications. One size is available for cats, while three sizes in small, medium and large are available for dogs. Each water-resistant monthly application repels mosquitoes for up to seven days in addition to repelling fleas and ticks for up to 30 days.

With the new product offerings, Wondercide customers can be worry-free in 1-2-3.

    1. Kill fleas and ticks on your pet with Flea & Tick Shampoo and Flea & Tick Pets + Home spray, the original flea-and-tick solution.
    2. Repel and prevent fleas and ticks on your pet with Flea & Tick Collar or Flea & Tick Spot On.
    3. Maintain control indoors with Flea & Tick Pets + Home and outdoors with Flea & Tick Yard + Garden spray.

As with all Wondercide products, these new solutions are powered by plants and safe to use around kids when used as directed. Mosquito & Fly Spray, Flea & Tick Shampoo, Flea & Tick Spot Collar, and Flea & Tick Spot On are 25b products (deemed by the EPA to be “minimum risk” to humans and the environment) and cruelty-free, tested only on the bugs they’re designed to eliminate. All packaging is recyclable including the aerosol once empty.

Grounded Foods Launches Plant-Based Cheese Products in Sprouts Farmers Market Stores Nationwide

    [ad_1]

The line of revolutionary plant-based cheeses, made from hemp seed and imperfect cauliflower, can now be found on the shelves at hundrends of Sprouts Farmers Market locations nationwide

    Press Release

    Mar 2, 2022

As part of its rapid growth and retail expansion, Grounded Foods is launching its groundbreaking plant-based cheese products in Sprouts Farmers Market, landing in hundreds of their stores across the United States.

Founded in late 2019 by Australian duo Veronica Fil and award-winning chef Shaun Quade, the company has rapidly gained the attention of larger grocery retailers due to its unique ingredients and novel fermentation process, which harnesses the functional proteins and fats contained in hemp and enables Grounded Foods to achieve textures that closely replicate that of dairy cheese.

Unlike nut- or coconut oil-based alternatives, Grounded® cheeses are primarily made from hemp seed and imperfect cauliflower and are designed to recreate the sensory experience of eating traditional dairy cheese — appealing to the growing number of flexitarian consumers who want healthier, more sustainable plant-based options without compromising on taste.

“It’s the taste for us,” said co-founder and CEO Veronica Fil. “That comes first with everything we do. We firmly believe that it’s possible to satisfy people’s craving for dairy cheese using existing, natural, and underutilized plant resources — stuff that comes from the ground.”

Sprouts Farmers Market prides itself on its mission to make natural foods accessible to everyone, while only stocking products that uphold its standard of health, quality, affordability, and short, easy-to-comprehend ingredients.

Many food startups have struggled to secure placement on the retail shelf over the past two years as a result of widespread COVID disruption. Despite these obstacles, Grounded’s retail presence continues to grow and is strengthened by a business model based around local manufacturing and domestic supply chain.  The company’s disproportionate growth also signals an ever-growing demand for plant-based alternatives amongst consumers and grocery chains.

Grounded® currently offers three cheeses: a Hemp Seed Cream Cheese, Hemp Seed GOAT Cheese, and a CHEESE FREE CHEESE squeeze-on sauce, all of which are available on groundedfoods.com and at a number of retail locations nationwide, including Whole Foods, Bristol Farms, Gelson’s, Harmon’s, Festival Foods and Pete’s Fresh Market. See here for a full stockist list.
