  • Sushi Saint will move into the Bar Kada space in Winter Park

    [ad_1]

Just a little over a month ago, Bar Kada — the Winter Park sake and small-plate lounge that I was a big fan of — shuttered. Chef-owner Michael Collantes cited financial viability as the cause and that he needed some time to figure out what to put into that windowless room.

He must have prayed to the heavens above, because here comes news that Sushi Saint, his handroll concept, will move into the windowless space between Soseki and Perla’s Pizza, both of which he also runs.

“Sake alone was a hard draw,” Collantes says about Bar Kada, “but we hope being more of a dining destination will attract more people.”

Collantes says that the Winter Park location will differentiate itself from the original downtown location and the Icon Park location (slated to open in Q2 2026) by offering the same dry-aging program for meats that they’ve been offered for years at Michelin-starred Soseki next door.

“And, for sure, caviar donuts will be on the menu,” he adds.

Sake will also be prominently featured, and Collantes hopes that this time ’round, more people will “go down the rabbit hole of our sake library.”

Look for a full liquor and cocktail program to be offered soon, but in the meantime, be sure to follow @sushisaintwp for updates on the opening.

  • Orlando’s Sushi Saint and Zaru receive Michelin Bib Gourmand nods

Orlando’s Sushi Saint and Zaru receive Michelin Bib Gourmand nods

    [ad_1]

It’s no secret that Euro-centric tasting menu restaurants and Japanese-leaning establishments get the so-called “inspectors” at the Michelin Guide all wet and randy, and today’s announcement does nothing to change the perception.

The tire company announced four new Bib Gourmand recipients, that is, establishments offering “a meal of good quality at a good value,” with two Orlando restaurants named to the list: Sushi Saint and Zaru.

When I reviewed Sushi Saint, a concept from Michael Collantes whose omakase restaurant, Soseki, has earned a Michelin star, I noted that the downtown bar and lounge presented heavenly hand rolls, but that you’ll pay a not-so-saintly sum for them. I mean five hand rolls cost $55; seven cost me $90. That price has since dropped to $80. A meal of good quality, absolutely. At a good value? Hmm, not sure about that.

Zaru, the udon noodle joint in Mills 50, is a little more in line with Bib Gourmand criteria. The paean to the squircle-shaped squiggler offers eight different noodle options (four cold and five hot) ranging in price from $12 to $36, with 18 assorted add-ons to customize your slurp.

The other Bib Gourmand recipients are Tam Tam in Miami and Streetlight Taco, a venture by chefs Mike Brannock and Bryce Bonsack, whose restaurant Rocca has earned a Michelin star.

The four recipients will be celebrated at the Florida Michelin Guide ceremony April 18 at the Tampa Edition hotel where Michelin stars will also be doled out. Expect more tasting menu restaurants to receive them.

  • Five Orlando-area restaurants added to the 2024 Michelin Guide

Five Orlando-area restaurants added to the 2024 Michelin Guide

    [ad_1]

The Michelin Guide Wednesday announced several new additions to its ever-growing list of recommended restaurants, and a handful of Orlando-area eateries made the cut.

The Michelin Guide has highlighted the best in dining since 1926, rating more than 30,000 establishments across the world and continuously adding to its guide. This year’s guide shouts out 19 new Florida additions, including five restaurants right here in Central Florida.

Orlando-area additions, all of which opened in 2023, are Zaru (udon dishes in Mills 50), Sushi Saint (high-quality temaki in downtown), Natsu Omakase (intimate omakase), Camille (Vietnamese-French fusion) and Chuan Fu (Szechuan cuisine in Winter Park).

These additions, all of which opened in 2023, may not come as a surprise, as they have each garnered their fair share of praise and pleased stomachs around town.

Zaru, Sushi Saint and Camille each grabbed themselves a spot on Orlando Weekly restaurant critic Faiyaz Kara’s “Top Tables of 2023” roundup, as well as happily satisfied reviews (Zaru, Sushi Saint, Camille). Chuan Fu, the Winter Park Szechuan house by the same team behind Chuan Lu Garden and U & Me Revolving Hot Pot, scored on Kara’s list of notable 2023 openings.

The 19 new Florida additions to the Michelin Guide also include six eateries in Tampa and eight in Miami. The full list is available now.
