  • ‘A magical moment’: Teachers turn friendship across the hall into family through surrogacy

    [ad_1]

THINGS TO BE SLOW MOVING. WELL, IT’S NOT THAT UNCOMMON FOR COWORKERS TO BECOME FRIENDS, BUT FEW EVER BECOME FAMILY. KCCI BEAU BOWMAN SHOWS US HOW THAT HAPPENED TO TWO TEACHERS AT MARSHALLTOWN’S MILLER MIDDLE SCHOOL IN THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY WAY. HAVE WE GOTTEN ANY OF THE QUESTIONS RIGHT YET ON THE LOCK CHALLENGE? TEACHING CAN SOMETIMES BE A TOUGH GIG. NOT BECAUSE THE QUESTIONS ARE HARD, BUT BECAUSE THE DAYS ARE LONG AND THE STAKES ARE HIGH. I WOULD NOT HAVE COME UP WITH THAT ONE EITHER. SOMETIMES THE THING THAT MAKES IT EASIER ISN’T A NEW LESSON PLAN. OR A BETTER BELL SCHEDULE. IT’S YOUR BEST FRIEND RIGHT ACROSS THE HALL. SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS. THEY ALL THOUGHT WE WERE SISTERS. ANNA MILLER AND MORGAN HURST BOTH STARTED AT MILLER MIDDLE SCHOOL IN MARSHALLTOWN 14 YEARS AGO. TWO TEACHERS ARRIVING AT THE SAME PLACE AT THE SAME TIME, THEN MOVING LIKE PARALLEL LINES THAT NEVER REALLY DRIFTED APART. CAREERS GROWING SIDE BY SIDE. BUT ALMOST WITHOUT THEM REALIZING IT. THEIR LIVES DID TOO. WE KIND OF GOT MARRIED AT THE SAME TIME. OUR FIRST KIDS ARE SIX MONTHS APART. FRIENDSHIPS AT WORK MAKE THE HOURS TICK FASTER, BUT THE REAL ONES DO SOMETHING ELSE. THEY HOLD YOU UP, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE HARD THINGS STOP BEING AFRAID. IT’S BEEN REALLY GREAT TO HAVE SOMEONE LIKE CELEBRATE THE REALLY, REALLY GREAT THINGS. AND THEN ALSO THE REALLY, REALLY HARD THINGS. FOR ANNA, ONE OF THOSE HARD THINGS WAS TRYING TO GET PREGNANT WITH HER SECOND CHILD. TEN YEARS, 20 ROUNDS OF IVF AND EVENTUALLY A CONVERSATION. NO ONE WANTS TO HAVE. BUT SOME FAMILIES HAVE TO TOWARDS THE END, LIKE HAD SAID, YOU KNOW, LIKE THEY HAD RECOMMENDED THAT WE SHIFT TO SURROGACY. I WASN’T READY FOR THAT. YOU KNOW, MORGAN WAS KIND OF ALWAYS THAT SUPPORT PERSON. SHE WAS THE FIRST ONE TO SAY, LIKE, YOU KNOW, LIKE I’D BE WILLING TO DO THIS FOR MORGAN. IT WASN’T COMPLICATED, NOT BECAUSE IT WAS BIG, BUT BECAUSE LOVE SOMETIMES IS SIMPLE. I HAD REALLY EASY PREGNANCIES, A SUPER SUPPORTIVE HUSBAND, AND SO IT WAS A REALLY EASY DECISION TO BE LIKE, IF YOU NEED THAT, I’M HAPPY TO HELP. THE EMBRYO WAS TRANSFERRED ON APRIL 1ST, 2024 AND STUCK ON THE FIRST TRY WHEN THEY CALLED AND LET US KNOW THAT HER BLOOD TEST CAME BACK POSITIVE. THAT WAS LIKE THE FIRST LIKE, OH MY GOD, THIS IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING. AND IN THE CLASSROOMS, THE ANTICIPATION BUILT THE WAY IT DOES IN A SCHOOL ON THE LAST DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS BREAK, I FEEL LIKE HE’S KICKING AND SHE’D RUN DOWN TO MY ROOM AND THEN HE’D GO SILENT AND I’M LIKE, HE’S JUST CALM BECAUSE HE LOVES YOU, RIGHT? LIKE YOU BRING THAT CALMING PRESENCE. AND THEN THAT DECEMBER SHY BOY DILLON WAS BORN. AND MORGAN, WHO HAD CARRIED HIM NINE MONTHS, MADE SURE THE FIRST MOMENTS BELONGED TO ANNA MORGAN, WAS VERY LIKE, I DON’T WANT TO SAY HANDS OFF. BUT LIKE WHEN HE WAS BORN, SHE REALLY WANTED IT TO BE ME. AND THAT WAS JUST A REALLY SPECIAL THING FOR ME TO HAVE BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, LIKE, THAT’S SOMETHING THAT I MISSED OUT ON AND I JUST AFTER HE WAS BORN, SHE KIND OF LET US HAVE OUR TIME, BUT THEN WAS WILLING TO BE, YOU KNOW, THAT PERSON OF SUPPORT. BUT THEN THAT NIGHT EVERYONE LEFT AND IT WAS JUST DYLAN AND I. AND THAT WAS JUST LIKE A MAGICAL MOMENT OF SOMETHING THAT I HAD HOPED FOR FOR SO LONG. NOW, ONE YEAR LATER, HE’S GOT FROSTING ON HIS HANDS AND OPINIONS ABOUT CAKE. HE ATE HIS CAKE, AND WHEN HE WAS DONE, HE LET US KNOW. HE JUST FLIPPED IT OFF THE TRAY AND IT LANDED ON THE GROUND. DILLON IS LOVED BY MORE THAN HE COULD EVER UNDERSTAND. OUR FAMILIES ARE JUST LIKE, ALMOST BONDED. AND IT ALL STARTED RIGHT HERE IN THE HALLS OF MILLER MIDDLE SCHOOL, WHERE TWO TEACHERS BECAME FRIENDS. AND THEN IN THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY WAY, BECAME FAMILY. THERE WE GO.

  • Sunbury woman carried child for California couple suspected of scam

    [ad_1]

SUNBURY — Sunbury resident Alexa Fasold thought she was helping a childless California couple when she agreed to be a surrogate, but learned they may be part of a nationwide scam before delivering the baby in October.

The healthy infant boy has been placed with a foster family in Montour County while the FBI and California authorities investigate Silvia Zhang, 38, and Guojun Xuan, 65, the owners of Mark Surrogacy, an Arcadia, Calif.-based agency, who were accused of felony child endangerment and child neglect and later found to have 21 children between the ages of 2 and 13 — mostly toddlers delivered by surrogates — in their home or care.

Previous nurse and surrogacy case manager delivers healthy baby for second set of gay intended parents, now parents

    Press Release

    updated: Dec 16, 2019

Second-time surrogate and surrogacy case manager Jennifer Lange delivered a healthy baby boy on Nov. 14 at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville, Maryland. The parents were able to be present for the birth and are now at home enjoying their first few weeks of parenthood. This is Jennifer’s second surrogacy journey with a second set of gay intended parents – her first surrogacy delivery was in March of 2018. Some intended parents and surrogates prefer no contact during a surrogacy journey, however, Jennifer and both sets of intended parents were thankfully able to develop a close friendship after being matched via surrogacy agency Creative Family Connections. Recently, the new parents brought their baby boy to visit Jennifer’s three children, giving them the opportunity to meet the baby and see him where he belongs, which is in his fathers’ arms.

Throughout both of her surrogacy journeys, Jennifer wrote about her incredible experiences in two blogs, which she has shared with her friends, family, and the intended parents’ families. Read more about her first journey here, and her second journey here.

    Jennifer Lange, Surrogacy Case Manager

Jennifer became a case manager with surrogacy agency Creative Family Connections in September of 2018 after completing her first surrogacy journey for a set of gay intended parents. Jennifer’s role at Creative Family Connections is to provide direct support to intended parents and gestational carriers (surrogates who have no biological connection to the intended parents) throughout their journey. Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from York College of Pennsylvania and has spent over 10 years working as a registered nurse in various areas of health care, including nursery and pregnancy postpartum care before joining Creative Family Connections.

Jennifer has always had a passion for helping others, both as a registered nurse and during her own surrogacy journeys as a gestational carrier. This passion for helping others build their families has carried over into her professional career as she loves sharing her firsthand knowledge of surrogacy. Jenn resides in Maryland with her husband and three children. She loves to run in her free time and enjoyed running during both of her surrogate pregnancies.

  • Can HIV-Positive Men Have a Biological Child?

Can HIV-Positive Men Have a Biological Child?

    [ad_1]

New Life Mexico believes that HIV-positive intended parents deserve an opportunity to have a family like everyone else in the world

    Press Release

    updated: May 2, 2017

Yes, HIV-positive men can have biological children. Cutting-edge Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), in conjunction with advanced treatments and modern laboratory testing, makes it possible for an HIV-positive man to become a father. Additionally, HIV is an extremely manageable disease. Anti-retroviral therapy is used to control the virus so that HIV-positive individuals can live a longer, happier life, and enjoy it fully.

At New Life Mexico, we strongly believe that men who have HIV should be provided with the opportunity to become parents as much as anyone else. We have developed a unique surrogacy and egg donation program for HIV-positive intended fathers that has been successfully administered for years. To ensure the safety of all parties involved, our intended parents undergo a comprehensive health screening process before being admitted to the program. There are several criteria that an HIV-positive intended father is required to meet:

We have developed a unique surrogacy and egg donation program for HIV-positive intended fathers that has been successfully administered for years.

Matuta Bzhalava, Country and Follow Up Manager

    • He must be on anti-retroviral therapy.
    • He must submit two serology tests with a difference of at least 6 months with an undetectable viral load.
    • The last viral load must not be older than 6 months for the time of “sperm washing” date.
    • It is necessary to present a medical resume from the treating doctor (infectious disease specialist) where he/she confirms the health status of the intended father and provides his recommendation for acceptance into the program.
    • In addition to all the documents mentioned above, the results of the following medical tests should be submitted:
      • Semen culture
      • Mycoplasma in semen
      • Ureaplasma in semen
      • Chlamydia in semen
      • HBV in semen
      • HCV in semen
      • Syphilis in semen
      • HIV in semen
      • Viric charge of HIV in semen

Once eligibility is confirmed, the intended father is asked to arrive at the clinic to provide his sperm for a procedure called “sperm washing.” Medical professionals perform the sperm washing procedure in specially equipped laboratories using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) techniques. The sample of the washed sperm is sent to a laboratory in the United States for confirmation that it is virus-free, and the sperm is then frozen and stored for later use. Surrogate mother and egg donor preparation takes two months on average and is started once the U.S. lab confirms the sample is free of the HIV virus, which takes around twenty days. The process is only performed with frozen sperm.

Programs available for HIV-positive intended fathers include the following:

    • Surrogacy
    • Surrogacy + Egg Donation (local or international traveling egg donors)
    • IVF for HIV-negative partner with or without Egg Donation
    • Surrogacy with frozen embryo
    • All above-mentioned programs with PGD for Gender Selection procedure added

Since the procedure is performed at a specially equipped and highly skilled facility to manage HIV-positive genetic fathers, the surrogacy package fee for HIV-positive patients differs from the standard ones and should be discussed in advance with the program manager.

  • Canadian Fertility Consultants, Committed to Healthiest Outcomes Through SET Surrogacy Program

Canadian Fertility Consultants, Committed to Healthiest Outcomes Through SET Surrogacy Program

    [ad_1]

Canadian Fertility Consultants marks the 1-year anniversary of its industry-leading SET (single embryo transfer) Surrogacy Program, and reaffirms its commitment to supporting the healthiest possible outcomes in surrogacy

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 24, 2017

One year ago, Canadian Fertility Consultants changed its longstanding policy of allowing its clients to decide whether or not to transfer multiple embryos into their Surrogate Mother, increasing the chances of a high-risk, multiple pregnancy.

Canadian Fertility Consultants made the decision to lead the charge within the fertility industry and institute the SET (single embryo transfer) policy for all clients using eggs from a woman under 35 years of age.

CEO Leia Swanberg knew that they may initially lose clients because of this major change in policy; however, the company has remained committed to ensuring the healthiest possible outcomes for her surrogates.

This policy change was part of a movement CFC is developing to ensure the protection of its Surrogates and Children born through Surrogacy.

According to the CDC, SET helps women avoid several risks to their own health that are associated with carrying multiples. It also helps families achieve success while preventing some risks known to be associated with giving birth to twins, or what is called “high order multiple births” (three or more children born at the same time). Infants born in multiple births are more often born early, are smaller (low birth weight) and experience more adverse health outcomes than singleton infants. There is consensus among experts that the desired outcome of ART is a healthy singleton infant.

The Government of Canada has long recommended using the SET protocol to increase the chances of a healthy full-term pregnancy; however, the industry has been slow to adopt these recommendations. Canadian Fertility Consultants was the first major Canadian company to make the SET protocol mandatory, and has always been committed to setting the gold standard in surrogacy practices in Canada.

“We would never advise a pregnant woman to skydive, so why would we put her at risk, along with the babies she’s carrying? The risks of multiple pregnancies are clear, and we are ensuring that this risk is eliminated through our new SET only program”, said Leia Swanberg, CEO of Canadian Fertility Consultants.

CEO Leia Swanberg knew that they may initially lose clients because of this major change in policy; however, the company has remained committed to ensuring the healthiest possible outcomes for her surrogates. Over the last year, the company has seen amazing results, and its surrogates and intended parents have benefited from the SET protocol.

The intention is to protect all parties involved by committing to the safest outcomes possible. The company will stand behind its policy by offering a Discounted Second journey agency fee, and will encourage other industry professionals, such as lawyers and Fertility clinics, to do the same for those who are pursuing two journeys simultaneously.

CFC hopes that fertility clinics and other industry professionals will adopt SET policies of their own, mandating the protection of the women carrying, as well as the families being created.

The Surrogates in the company’s program are such amazing women, and deserve to be honored and respected, and this is one way that can be done. The company is always committed to providing its Surrogates with the best medical care, and their safety is always the prime concern.

Sacred Surrogacy Launches New Brand Identity, E-Commerce Platform, and Website

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Mar 31, 2017

Leia Swanberg, CEO of Sacred Surrogacy is proud to announce the launch of our new brand identity, e-commerce platform, and website. “Our Sacred Surrogacy program has been growing so quickly we thought it was time to more closely realign the brand with our message”, said Leia Swanberg CEO of the company.

The new brand identity was the shared vision of Leia Swanberg, and Creative Director, Kiley Werezak. “The logo with it’s varied line widths, and softened corners, imitate the hand-drawn art during our Honoring Ceremonies at our Sacred Surrogacy Retreats”, said Kiley Werezak.

Our Sacred Surrogacy program has been growing so quickly we thought it was time to more closely realign the brand with our message.

    Leia Swanberg, CEO Sacred Surrogacy

    WHAT IS SACRED SURROGACY?

The Sacred Surrogacy movement offers a deeper way to view this remarkable journey. It is a way to embrace the beauty that is inherently a part of the pregnancy and birth process, and to navigate the path of alternative family building. Through our courses intended parents and surrogates learn self care practices, as well as ways to connect to the process in a soul fulfilling and meaningful way.

Sacred Surrogacy is both online classes and weekend retreats for surrogates and intended parents. We have also recently launched the Sacred Donation subscription box, which allows intended parents to thank their known or anonymous egg donor for the beautiful gift she is giving.

    WHY WE STARTED SACRED SURROGACY

Leia Swanberg and Anni Daulter, the creator of Sacred Pregnancy, teamed up to create these programs to bridge the disconnect in the industry between surrogates and the beauty that was available to them. The goal was simple, to honour and celebrate each of these women for the extraordinary gift she is giving. Our hope is that when a surrogate participates in a spiritual practice that honours her, it will in turn honour the relationship with her intended parents.

The movement has now grown significantly, and branched into a program specifically for intended parents, who also benefit from the practice of being honoured while they walk this journey. We now serve over 400 families across the world each year through our retreats, online classes, and subscription boxes.

New Life Mexico – Gender Selection for Family Balancing

    [ad_1]

New Life Mexico is regarded as one of the most responsible fertility clinics in Mexico that offers PGD Gender Selection.

    Press Release

    updated: Mar 29, 2017

Determination of your desired gender before the implantation of the embryo is known as gender selection. In natural conception cycle, the probability of having a girl or a boy is equal and depends on the quality of the sperm. An egg has 22 chromosomes apart from the X chromosome, whereas the sperm accompanies a further 22 chromosomes with X or Y chromosome. The result is a boy or a girl when the sperm fertilizes the egg with Y chromosome and X chromosome respectively.

Often, couples are under economic, social and medical pressure to give birth to a child of a specific gender.

New Life Mexico is committed in working to an established medical center and validates over thousands of fertility treatments.

Matuta Bzhalava, Country and Follow Up Manager

There are thousands of health problems and medical disorders identified by scientists related to gender that passes from parent to child.

In the past, gender selection was offered to parents who have concerns regarding genetic diseases induced in a specific gender. Gender specific diseases can be restricted by the process of gender selection. Family balancing, however, is a new concept developed for gender selection. Couples are keen to explore gender selection which can offer them almost 100 percent ability to obtain their choice of gender. Early sperm sorting is carried out to select sperm with the desired gender and the latest technology is regarded to be extremely reliable.

Embryos are tested for gender-related genetic conditions by Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis or PGD before placing it in the womb. This medical procedure offers the best opportunity to select your baby’s gender.

The PGD testing process involves the removal of one cell from the early stage embryos followed by genetic analysis based on DNA, executed in highly specialized laboratories. After the completion of the analysis for 24 to 36 hours, parents are offered to choose the embryos to be transferred. There is a 99.9% positive scope of obtaining the desired gender after pregnancy is achieved.

More than 60% of patients undergoing IVF after the gender selection procedure give birth to a healthy baby after the transfer of an embryo.

    Methods of Gender Selection

Gender selection has been explored for many years and has been highly researched over time. There has been intense interest by Asians, Egyptians and the people of Greek culture in gender selection. Documented scientific research has been made that reveals the chance of various methods of pregnancy achievement in the past.

Intensive research in this field in the 1980s and 1990s has brought out successful scopes of achieving a desired pregnancy guaranteed with PGD.

    Process of IVF/PGD

    1. Hormones are administered to nurture numerous developments in the ovaries. The progress is observed by ultrasound and blood tests.

    2. Eggs are drawn out via the vagina under the influence of anesthesia.

    3. Couple’s eggs and sperms are mixed in the laboratory to create an embryo.

    4. The embryos formed are shifted to incubators to grow.

    5. On the third day of this culture, the embryos are biopsied by removing 1 cell out of 8. The gender of this cell is analyzed and chromosomal makeup is performed after a screening of indicated inherited disorders.

    6. Gender-selected embryos and genetic makeup are inserted in the uterus after two days.

    7. The blood test for pregnancy is usually performed after a span of 10 days.

    8. Additional healthy embryos are frozen for future use.

    9. Normal gestation and birth occur.

Pros and Cons of gender Selection

    Pros

PGD and PGS ensure almost 100% guarantee that you will give birth to a baby of your desired sex.

After the PGD or PGS cycle, the embryos left of both the sexes can be stored frozen for future use in the unfortunate case that the mother suffers from a miscarriage or may want additional children in the future. Frozen embryos are as healthy as those that have been freshly transferred and are significantly cheaper and less intrusive.

    Cons

One session of IVF with genetic testing costs significantly more than normal IVF treatment.

This medical procedure is incursive. It is painful to remove the eggs from the ovaries.

Medical drugs prescribed in this treatment leaves side effects like weight gain, blurred vision, swelling or bloating.

There are greater chances of multiple births through IVF pregnancy. As per the statistics of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 46% of the infants conceived through IVF or related procedures that include a transfer of multiple embryos were either twins or other multiples. However, such possibility can be lowered with PGD or PGS by executing single embryo transfer.

Women below the age of a maximum of 36 have 46% chances of live birth, whereas the success percentage lowers with an increase of age. Most IVF centers exclude the abnormal embryos while releasing their success rates with PGD and PGS and hence it seems to be higher.

Couples have to decide on what is to be done with the unused embryos. These could be frozen, donated or discarded; they can even be donated for research.

Success rates with gender selection treatments

Couples looking for establishing family balance opt for gender selection in their fertility treatment. Those couples are able to conceive naturally but go for such fertility treatment to get the baby of their desired gender. Infertility is not the reason for those parents to go for such treatment.  However, there is no 100% guarantee in such fertility treatment of gender selection. There are various factors that are responsible for the success of this particular fertility treatment. It includes the age of the couple, a level of hormones responsible for gender selection process and fertility level of both the parents. The success of gender selection treatment also largely depends on the quality of equipment, fertility laboratory and the experience of the doctor and his selection of medical course. It’s a myth that success of this type of fertility treatment solely depends on the age of the parents. However, age is a factor and we have mentioned about the level of dependency on the age factor earlier in our article.
