Kansas City shooting leaves 1 dead, 21 hurt, including kids, after Chiefs parade; person killed ID’d

    [ad_1]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person died and 21 more were injured by gunfire, including children, in a shooting after the Kansas City Chiefs parade and rally Wednesday to celebrate their Super Bowl win.

Radio station KFFI 90/1 FM identified the person killed as one of their DJs, Lisa Lopez-Galvan.

In a post on their Facebook page they wrote, “It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family. We encourage anyone who feels they saw something to reach out to law enforcement at 816 234 5111. This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community.”

Those injured in the shooting were sent to four Kansas City hospitals for treatment. At least two are in critical condition at University Health Truman Medical Center, where a total of eight gunshot victims are being treated. They are also treating four people for other, non-gunshot injuries.

Children’s Mercy Kansas City Hospital said nine of their pediatric patients had gunshot wounds. They are treating a total of 12 patients, 11 of whom are children.

University of Kansas Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City are both treating one gunshot victim each. St. Luke’s said they have also received a handful of walk-in patients who were injured fleeing the area after shots were fired, but who were not injured by the gunfire.

    WATCH: Kansas City police update

The mayor of Kansas City and Police Chief Stacey Graves gave an update on the shooting after the KC Chiefs parade and rally celebrating their Super Bowl win.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said there are three people in custody and that number is believed to include the gunmen, though police said they are still working to determine if all three were involved in the shooting. She also said at least one weapon was recovered.

Graves said it was a shooting made by “a few bad actors” even in the presence of law enforcement, and no terrorism is suspected.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation. The scene has been cleared and is being held as police collect physical and digital evidence. They are also still working to connect people with their loved ones, Graves said.

Mayor Quinton Lucas said there were 600 Kansas City, Missouri police officers and 250 officers from outside agencies at the parade, which was expected to be attended by at least 1 million people. No Chiefs players, coaches or staff were injured or involved in the shooting.

“This is not Kansas City. I’m angered by what happened,” said Chief Graves. “But I want you to know that the Kansas City Missouri Police Department and all the law enforcement officers that were there today that we’re serving and protecting, did the best they could and I’m so proud of them that they ran into danger. Getting two people into custody, and at the same time rendering life sustaining aid to those victims. We were here for a safe celebration and because of two bad actors or more is why we’re standing here today. We will recover as a city. My heart goes out to our victim who is deceased. But your police department stands ready, and we are invested in the safety and betterment of Kansas City.”

The Chiefs released a statement, saying in part, “We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and all of Kansas City.”

Kansas City police said on X that “child reunification stations” were set up at the main entrance to Union Station, and at 2301 Main St. “We still have several needing reunification,” the tweet read. Police also asked witnesses to the shooting to go to a corner near Union Station.

Kansas City fire officials said one person is dead and nine were injured in a shooting after the Chief Super Bowl victory rally Wednesday.

The White House released a brief statement, saying, “The President has been briefed on the shooting in Kansas City and will continue to receive updates. White House officials have been in touch with state and local leaders, and federal law enforcement is on the scene supporting local law enforcement.” The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms confirmed ATF agents had been at the parade to support KCPD during the celebrations and are now assisting in the investigation into the shooting. The FBI is also working with local law enforcement, and Attorney General Merrick Garland is being apprised of the situation as it continues to develop.

READ MORE: Fans celebrate Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl win on Valentine’s Day

Multiple people near the parade route were carried away on stretchers shortly after Chiefs fans marked their third Super Bowl title in five seasons.

“All of a sudden, we see people running and we hear gunshots and we take off running. And we look over and there’s a guy next to us on the ground,” witness Jennifer Wilbers told Kansas City ABC affiliate KMBC.

Chiefs wide receiver Justin Watson told KMBC that the Chiefs players and their families are safe.

Players, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes, linebacker Drue Tranquill and guard Trey Smith, are speaking out on social media.

“People started crashing forward, everybody started running, there was screaming,” another woman told KMBC. “We didn’t know what was happening, but in this day and age when people run, you run.”

“We went where an elevator was, we shut the doors and sat back against the doors and we prayed,” she said.

RELATED: Travis Kelce says pushing Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was ‘definitely unacceptable’

“There was yelling and we didn’t know if it was safe to leave, so we tried to block the doors. We heard the elevator start to move so we opened the doors and ran out — there were officers there,” she said. “I’ve never been so glad to see an officer in my life.”

Lisa Money of Kansas City, Kansas, was trying to gather some confetti near the end of the parade when she heard somebody yell, “Down, down, everybody down!”

At first Money thought somebody might be joking until she saw the SWAT team jumping over the fence.

“I can’t believe it really happened. Who in their right mind would do something like this? This is supposed to be a day of celebration for everybody in the city and the surrounding area. and then you’ve got some idiot that wants to come along and do something like this,” she said.

Kevin Sanders, 53, of Lenexa, Kansas, said he heard what sounded like firecrackers and then people running. After that initial flurry, calm returned, and he didn’t think much of it. But he said 10 minutes later, ambulances started showing up.

“It sucks that someone had to ruin the celebration, but we are in a big city,” Sanders said.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson and the first lady were at the parade when shots were fired but are safe, Parson posted on X.

“State law enforcement personnel are assisting local authorities in response efforts,” Parson posted. “As we wait to learn more, our hearts go out to the victims.”

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said he was with coach Andy Reid and other coaches and staff members, and the team was on buses and returning to Arrowhead Stadium.

Areas that had been filled with crowds were empty after the shooting, with police and firefighters standing and talking behind an area restricted by yellow tape.

Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory celebration draws massive crowd of elated fans

Throngs had lined the route, with fans climbing trees and street poles, or standing on rooftops for a better view. Players rolled through the crowd on double-decker buses, DJs and drummers heralding their arrival. Owner Clark Hunt was on one of those buses, holding the Lombardi Trophy.

“We are stacking up trophies,” linebacker Drue Tranquill said as he grabbed a reporter’s mic during Wednesday’s festivities to mark the Chiefs’ come-from-behind, 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers.

“Best fans in the world,” exclaimed wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who caught the winning touchdown pass, as he walked along the route, with the players signing jerseys and at least one person’s head.

Key on the minds of many fans is whether pop superstar Taylor Swift would join her boyfriend Travis Kelce for the parade and victory speeches. Swift has not commented. She has a show in Melbourne, Australia, on Friday night, the first of three scheduled concerts on her Eras Tour. She was nowhere to be seen early in the parade.

“I missed last year. I said, ‘I’m not missing this year,’” said longtime fan Charles Smith Sr., who flew from his home in Sicklerville, New Jersey, for the parade.

The city and the team each chipped in around $1 million for the event commemorating Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs becoming the first team since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots two decades ago to defend their title.

After decades without a championship, the city is gaining experience with victory parades. Five seasons ago, the Chiefs defeated the 49ers for the team’s first Super Bowl championship in 50 years. That followed the Kansas City Royals winning the World Series in 2015, the city’s first baseball championship in 30 years. That year, fans abandoned their cars on the side of the highway so they could walk to the celebration.

Then, last year, the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 and prophetically vowed they would be back for more.

  • Etsy drifts further away from its roots with first Super Bowl ad

Etsy drifts further away from its roots with first Super Bowl ad

    [ad_1]

Etsy Inc., once known as a quirky marketplace for handmade, artisanal and vintage items, seems to be moving further away from its origins amid a much tougher e-commerce landscape and the impact of AI.

    Etsy
    ETSY,
    +4.83%

will be marketing to a whole new audience on Sunday, when its first Super Bowl commercial will run. The 30-second ad is quirky; it depicts a generic 19th-century American leader who’s flummoxed over how to reciprocate France’s gift of the Statue of Liberty. With the help of an anachronistic smartphone, he and his team search on Etsy using its new Gift Mode option, and find its “Cheese Lover” category after determining that the French love cheese. Voilà — they decide to send the French some cheese.

The commercial is part of Etsy’s push of a new user interface featuring Gift Mode, which lets shoppers search for gifts for a specific type of person or occasion — combining generative AI and human curation to give gift buyers some unusual options.

But are these moves desperate and costly efforts to try to reach potential new buyers, coming on the heels of Etsy’s plans to lay off 11% of its staff?Or could running a TV ad at the most expensive time of the year actually lead to more sales on the once-fast growing marketplace?

Etsy believes these moves will help the company grow again, and its research shows the average American spends $1,600 a year on gifts. “There is no single market leader and Etsy sees a real opportunity to become the destination for gifting,” Etsy’s Chief Executive Josh Silverman said in a recent blog post.

Etsy is clearly under pressure after seeing its gross merchandise sales more than double in 2020 during the pandemic, when it became a go-to place to buy handmade masks and all kinds of items for the home, from vintage pieces to antiques to castoffs. From personal experience as an Etsy seller, I saw sales at my own small vintage-clothing shop more than double in 2020 and then fall back in 2021, while still remaining higher than in 2019. In the last two years, sales have slowed, and some other sellers have witnessed similar patterns, based on their comments in seller forums.

The number of sellers and buyers on the platform has increased on the same level as gross merchandise sales. But e-commerce competition has also gotten more fierce.

“Our main concern with Etsy is growing competition in the space from new players like Temu,” said Bernstein Research analyst Nikhil Devnani, in an email. Temu and fellow Chinese online retailer Shein have raised a lot of investor jitters, as Etsy’s gross merchandise sales have slipped over the last year and are forecast to fall again in its upcoming fourth-quarter earnings report later this month.

Devnani said a Super Bowl ad could potentially help the marketplace gain visibility, something it has always lacked.

“One dynamic they’ve talked about a lot is that brand awareness/recollection is still low, and this keeps frequency low,” he said, noting that Etsy buyers shop on the site about three times per year, on average. “They want to be more top-of-mind … Super Bowl ads are notoriously expensive of course, but can be impactful/get noticed.”

The company’s big focus on Gift Mode, however, could be a risky strategy. How many times a year do consumers look for gifts? And in a note Devnani wrote in October, before the company’s Gift Mode launch, he said that one of the concerns investors have is that Etsy is too niche. “’How often does someone need something special?’ is the rhetoric we hear most often,” he said. Etsy, then, is counting on buyers returning for other items for themselves.

Etsy CEO Silverman believes buyers will come back again and again to purchase gifts. Naved Khan, a B. Riley Securities analyst, said in a recent note to clients that he believes Gift Mode plays to Etsy’s core strengths, offering “unique goods at reasonable prices” versus the mass-produced products sold on Shein, Temu, Amazon.com Inc.
    AMZN,
    +2.71%
    ,
    and other sites.

Consumer spending has changed, though. At an investor conference in December, Silverman said that consumers are spending on dining out and traveling, instead of buying things.

But while investors still view Etsy as a niche e-commerce site, some buyers and sellers see it overrun with repetitive, non-relevant ads. Complaints about a decline in search capabilities, reliance on email and chat for support, and constant tech changes are common on seller forums and Facebook groups. AI-generated art offered by newer sellers as a side hustle has also become a thought-provoking, debated issue. And there are complaints about mass-produced items making their way on the site.

Etsy said that in addition to its human and automated efforts, it also relies on community flags to help take down infringing products that are not allowed on its marketplace, and that community members should contact the company when if they see mass-produced items for sale on the site.

It also continues to work on search. On its last earnings call, Silverman said the company was moving beyond relevance to the next frontier of search, one “focused on better identifying the quality of each Etsy listing utilizing humans and [machine-learning] technology, so that from a highly relevant result set we bring the very best of Etsy to the top — personalized to what we understand of your tastes and preferences.”

The pressure could build on the company if its latest moves don’t generate growth. Etsy recently gave a seat on its board to a partner at activist investor Elliott Management, which bought a “sizable” stake in the company in the last few months. Marc Steinberg, who is responsible for public and private investments at Elliott, has also has been on the board at Pinterest
    PINS,
    -9.45%

    since December 2022.

Elliott Management did not respond to questions. But in a statement last week, Steinberg said he was joining the board because he “believe[s] there is an opportunity for significant value creation.” Some sellers fear that the pressure from investors and Wall Street will lead to Etsy allowing mass-produced products onto the site. In its fall update, Etsy said the number of listings it removed for violating its handmade policy jumped 112% and that it was further accelerating such actions.

Etsy’s stock before the news of Elliott’s stake was down about 18% this year. Its shares are now off about 3.65% this year, after recently having their best day in seven years on the news that Steinberg joined the board.

Etsy is a unique marketplace that for many years had a much better reputation than some of its rivals, like eBay
    EBAY,
    +0.98%
    .
But since going public and answering to Wall Street, the need to provide growth and profits for investors has become much more of a driver. The Super Bowl ad and Gift Mode may bring a broader awareness to Etsy, but will it be the right kind of awareness? Sellers like me hope these new efforts will stave off the continuing fight with the likes of Temu and other vendors of mass-produced products, and help Etsy retain the remaining unique aspects of its marketplace.

  • What “Protect Black Women” means in Pop Culture

What “Protect Black Women” means in Pop Culture

    [ad_1]

Saturday Night Live’s season premiere this past weekend saw Megan Thee Stallion use the platform as a call to action. During the performance of her hit single “Savage,” the Houston rapper briefly veered from the song’s braggadocious energy to bring attention to a real issue.

Sound bites of Malcolm X’s quote about America’s disrespect towards Black women and activist Tamika Mallory condemning Kentucky’s Attorney General Daniel Cameron for his handling of Breonna Taylor’s murder accompanied Megan’s proclamation. That proclamation? “We need to protect our Black Women.” Read her New York Times op ed “Why I Speak Up For Black Women” here.

Through no fault of her own, Megan has indirectly become the face of violence against Black Women. She was the victim of gunshot wounds to both feet after attending Kylie Jenner’s pool party in July. In August, she revealed that it was Tory Lanez who shot her allegedly. Her accusations on Instagram Live were a cause for speculation. There had been rumblings on social media that Tory was the shooter, but now Megan’s credibility suddenly came into question.

Megan’s situation is a recurring narrative that exists in Hip-Hop. Black women have had to bear the brunt of misogyny and disrespect at the hands of their male counterparts. In the form of abrasive lyrics, the presentation of women as objects in music videos, and failing to use their male privilege to act as advocates, Rappers have also perpetuated the disregard for the safety of Black Women. This attitude, like most of Hip-Hop culture, is the spawn of a much larger societal issue.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 41.2 percent of Black women have experienced intimate partner physical violence in their lifetime. An estimated 51.3 percent of black adult female homicides are also a result of DV. Megan and Tory didn’t publicly admit to being in a relationship. But the way they kept each other company before the shooting and with Tory ambiguously referencing the situation on his latest album, ‘DAYSTAR’, a romantic connection isn’t too far fetched.

Black women are often the subject of hate and ridicule when the focus is on their craft as well. Over the summer, Megan and fellow femcee Cardi came under fire for the salacious song and visual to their collaboration “WAP. The response to “WAP” saw Cardi and Megan labeled as deviants and smut peddlers instead of talented, successful women embracing their sexuality.’While some defended Cardi and Megan’s right to showcase their “assets” unapologetically, Many felt that their display was the end all be all to moral decency.

The backlash that “WAP” received wasn’t just because of its sexual content. There have been other instances where a Black Woman entertainer became a target for her views. In 2016, Beyonce sent the far right into a frenzy with her Super Bowl Halftime Show Performance. The pro-Black imagery and presumably “militant” energy saw the likes of Tomi Lahren attack Beyonce for using the NFL’s biggest game of the year to let the world know Black Lives Matter.

Black women are also victims of being mocked for their identity and style, only for them to be praised and mimicked when taken on by women of other races. The term “Blackfishing” has become a topic of discussion in and of itself. Non-Black women pretending to be Black Women to gain access to predominantly Black spaces has become a growing trend; Rachel Dolezal and Jessica A. Krug are two examples. Dolezal’s misrepresentation led her to become a chapter president of the NAACP, while Krug’s perpetrating left both her students and colleagues at George Washington University hurt and confused.

Megan’s message from her SNL performace was further amplified in an op-ed she penned for The New York Times titled “Why I Speak Up for Black Women”. Megan covers a myriad of topics from the plight of Black Women in America to fans and critics trying the pit her against other rappers who share the same gender. She goes on to highlight how it’s ridicoulous that the phrase “Protect Black Women” is “controversial”. “We deserve to be protected as human beings.” Megan writes “And we are entitled to our anger about a laundry list of mistreatment and neglect that we suffer.”

“Protect Black Women” isn’t a rallying cry for the sake of performative activism. It’s a statement that encompasses the overall need to defend Black Women in every capacity. Whether it’s an ER technician from Kentucky or a platinum-selling rapper, the guardianship of Black Women’s safety needs to be a priority. Their contributions to pop culture and civilization are vast and priceless.
