For Super Bowl ads this year, crypto is out, booze is in

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — The hottest ticket in town for advertisers is officially sold out. Fox said Monday that in-game ads for Super Bowl LVII have all been sold.

The big game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles takes place on Sunday.

The Super Bowl is advertising’s biggest stage, with advertisers jockeying to get their products in front of the more than 100 million people that watch each year. Mark Evans, executive vice president of ad sales for Fox Sports, said a few ads went for more than $7 million for a 30-second spot. Most sold between $6 million and $7 million.

Anheuser-Busch remains the biggest advertiser with three minutes of national airtime. The beverage giant gave up its deal to be the exclusive alcohol advertiser this year, so Heineken, Diageo, Remy Martin and Molson Coors are also in the game. Other big categories advertising include packaged food like Doritos and M&Ms, movie studios and streaming services, automakers and tech companies, Evans said. Out this year: crypto companies.

Last year’s Super Bowl was dubbed the “Crypto Bowl” because four cryptocurrency companies — FTX, Coinbase, Crypto.com and eToro — ran splashy commercials. It was part of a larger effort by crypto companies to break into the mainstream with sports sponsorships. But in November, FTX filed for bankruptcy and its founder was charged in a scheme to defraud investors.

This year, two crypto advertisers had commercials “booked and done” and two others were ”on the one-yard line,” Evans said. But once FTX news broke, those deals weren’t completed.

Now, “There’s zero representation in that category on the day at all,” he said.

Evans said most Super Bowl ads sold much earlier than usual, with more than 90% of its Super Bowl ad inventory gone by the end of the summer, as established advertisers jockeyed for prime positions. But the remaining spots sold slower. Partly that was due to the implosion of the crypto space, as well as general advertiser concerns about the global economy, Evans said.

Last year, NBC sold out of its ad space briskly and said an undisclosed number of 30-second spots went for $7 million, a jump from the $6.5 million that 2021’s ads went for.

  • Brady will not move into Fox announcing booth until 2024

Brady will not move into Fox announcing booth until 2024

    [ad_1]

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tom Brady will not go immediately from the playing field to the broadcast booth.

Brady told Colin Cowherd during Monday’s episode of “The Herd” on FS1 and Fox Sports Radio that he will not start his broadcasting career with Fox until the 2024 season.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion — who retired last week after a 23-year career with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers — signed a 10-year deal with Fox last May to become the network’s top analyst when he decided to quit playing for good.

Brady said that he didn’t want to immediately rush into announcing and that he wanted to catch up on some other parts of his life.

“I think one thing about my career whether it was when I was drafted by the Patriots or signing agreements with the Bucs, I wanted to be fully committed and I never wanted to let people down,” Brady said. “I want to be great at what I do, and that always takes some time and strategizing and learning and growing and evolving. I have so many people to rely on that could support me in that growth too.”

Brady is expected to eventually join Kevin Burkhardt on Fox’s top team. Burkhardt and Greg Olsen will call their first Super Bowl on Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles.

Fox, which is carrying its 10th Super Bowl on Sunday, also has Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans after the 2024 season. Brady is still not expected to be a part of Fox’s pregame coverage on Sunday.

  • Mahomes, Hurts aware of significance of this Super Bowl duel

Mahomes, Hurts aware of significance of this Super Bowl duel

    [ad_1]

    By DAVID BRANDT

    February 9, 2023 GMT

PHOENIX (AP) — Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni is thrilled young aspiring football players all over the world will get to watch two Black quarterbacks face each other for the first time in the Super Bowl.

He’s also pleased they get to watch two really, really good quarterbacks.

“I’m really excited for both quarterbacks, what they can represent to a ton of kids,” Sirianni said at Monday’s Super Bowl media night. “Not only are they two African-American quarterbacks, but they’re the two best quarterbacks in the NFL this year. First-team All-Pro, second-team All-Pro.

“They both play at the highest level.”

There are many storylines for this Super Bowl, but the duel between Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes is right at the top of the list.

The significance of Sunday’s matchup in Glendale, Arizona, isn’t lost on Mahomes.

“I think about it a lot,” Mahomes said. “The quarterbacks that came before me — Shack Harris, Doug Williams — that laid the foundation for me to be in this position. It goes across all sports. If you think about Jackie Robinson and the people who broke the color barrier in baseball, I wouldn’t be standing here today if it wasn’t for them.

“To be lucky enough to be in this position — and play against another great guy like Jalen — it will be a special moment. I’m glad we’re here today, but how can we keep moving forward? How can we motivate kids who are younger, who want to follow their dreams to be a quarterback?”

It’s not just the quarterbacks who are relishing the groundbreaking matchup. Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon said players are well aware of what they’re witnessing.

“There’s history being made,” McKinnon said. “That’s a beautiful thing. Something I can look back and tell my kids that, ‘I was a part of that, I experienced that.’ So it’s a blessing. This whole experience is a blessing.

“To have that on top, just adds to it.”

In addition to being good, both quarterbacks are also tough.

Hurts missed two games late in the season with a shoulder injury that’s still bothering him. The Eagles haven’t had to lean on him in two lopsided playoff wins. He has 275 yards passing and two TDs along with 73 yards rushing and two scores, pedestrian numbers by his standards.

Mahomes hobbled around on a badly sprained ankle to help the Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 and advance to their third Super Bowl appearance in four years.

“It’s amazing — especially being Black History Month as well,” Eagles cornerback Darius Slay said. “I’m thankful for this moment, to be a part of this. This is crazy with two Black quarterbacks in the Super Bowl, one of the biggest games in the world.”

Washington’s Doug Williams was the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl following the 1987 season. That’s back when Black quarterbacks were fairly rare across the NFL.

This season — 35 years later — began with 11 Black QBs starting in Week 1 and now ends with a historic matchup.

Mahomes can become the first two-time winner if he leads the Chiefs to victory on Sunday. Hurts aims to become the fourth Black QB to win the Super Bowl, joining Williams, Mahomes and Russell Wilson.

Steve McNair, Colin Kaepernick, Cam Newton and Wilson also started in a Super Bowl and lost.

    Now it’s Hurts vs. Mahomes.

After McKinnon heard that Sirianni said the two quarterbacks were the top two in the league, he had a one-word response: “Facts.”

“It’s going to be a showdown — all four quarters,” McKinnon said. “It’s going to come down to the last second. Jalen Hurts is phenomenal, I’ve been watching him since college. The things he does and brings to the table are phenomenal.”

  • Super Bowl opening night returns with energetic atmosphere

Super Bowl opening night returns with energetic atmosphere

    [ad_1]

PHOENIX (AP) — Nick Sirianni answered questions about Rocky, Santa Claus and even which of his players on the Philadelphia Eagles he’d want to date his 5-year-old daughter when she grows up.

Welcome to Super Bowl opening night where football talk gives way to the wild and wacky.

The circus atmosphere that kicks off the NFL’s biggest week returned Monday for the first time since 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic forced teams to meet the media on video conferences the past two seasons.

Sirianni and the Eagles took the stage first at Footprint Center, home of the Phoenix Suns. “Fly, Eagles, Fly” chants greeted players and coaches before they spent an hour answering wide-ranging questions from more than 2,000 media members.

Red-clad Chiefs fans took over the arena when Kansas City came out, turning it into an indoor version of Arrowhead Stadium.

It was a new experience for many of the Eagles, who have seven holdovers from the team that beat New England in the Super Bowl five years ago.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are here for the third time in four years so they already got a taste of this media extravaganza in Miami in 2020.

For the record, Sirianni loves the Rocky movies. He identifies with Sylvester Stallone’s fictional movie character, who is part of Philadelphia’s fabric as much as the cheesesteak.

“I live and coach in the greatest sports town in America,” Sirianni said. “It means so much to everybody there. That’s what you want. When you’re a little kid playing in a peewee football game, you want everybody to see you. You want your fans to love it. You want them to be there. You want them wearing green on Friday. You want them to be throwing snowballs at Santa Claus. You want to put talent on display in front of the greatest sports town in America. I love the fact that my kids are growing up in a sports town where football means so much because football means so much to me.”

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, an AP NFL MVP finalist, drew the largest crowd in the early portion. Reporters staked out his spot about an hour before the event started. The first question came from Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin, an NFL Network analyst.

“I feel like it’s not a time to reflect,” Hurts said about his journey to stardom. “We came here to finish the job.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid got numerous questions about his time in Philadelphia and food. The cheeseburger fanatic would not name his favorite city to eat outside of Kansas City, Green Bay and Philly.

“They won’t let you back in if I do,” he said.

Overall, opening night wasn’t quite as outrageous as past years.

In Arizona in 2008, a female reporter showed up wearing a white wedding dress and veil and proposed to Tom Brady, who was trying to lead the Patriots to the first 19-0 season in NFL history.

One radio host walked around shirtless wearing a barrel. A television reporter from Mexico asked people to play pin the tail on the donkey and then asked them to toss foam footballs into a basket. Some of the Eagles cheerleaders participated.

Otherwise, it was more about odd questions than odd looks.

Someone asked Mahomes and Sirianni if this was a “must-win game.”

Both said yes in the most polite way possible.

“The job is not finished,” said Mahomes, who is also an MVP finalist.

Mahomes got the loudest ovation of the night.

Oh, his favorite song of all time is Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” Rihanna will be the halftime performer but he won’t be watching.

“Coach Reid said if we go out there to watch to just keep walking,” Mahomes said.

The Eagles (16-3) and Chiefs (16-3) meet on Sunday, both aiming for their second Super Bowl title within five years.

Perhaps the most anxious person in the stadium will be Donna Kelce, mom of All-Pros Jason and Travis.

Donna Kelce, who took part in some of the night’s festivities on stage, wore a jersey that was half-green for Jason’s Eagles and half-red for Travis’ Chiefs. She had No. 87 for Travis on the front and No. 62 for Jason on the back.

Who is the biggest momma’s boy?

Donna held up a photo of Travis.

  • Superbowl LVI was crypto’s coming out party. This year, the party’s over | CNN Business

Superbowl LVI was crypto’s coming out party. This year, the party’s over | CNN Business

    [ad_1]

    New York
    CNN
     —

Super Bowl LVI was the crypto world’s coming out party. Buzzy firms made bold pitches last year, and shelled out millions of dollars on ads encouraging viewers not to be afraid of this new-fangled digital investment — and for God’s sake don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity!

You can expect a lot less noise from Team Crypto during Super Bowl LVII next Sunday.

In the year since those celebrity-packed ads debuted, the entire crypto industry has been rattled by a collapse in digital asset values. Bankruptcies began to pile up over the summer.

    Then the real pain started.

Of the four crypto or crypto-affiliated companies that advertised in the Super Bowl last year, one (FTX) has collapsed completely. The others (Coinbase, Crypto.com and eToro) have fought against industry headwinds. Shares of Coinbase, the only publicly traded company in the group, have fallen more than 60% since its “floating QR code” ad became one of the most talked-about spots.

Don’t expect any of those companies to be back this year. FTX is bankrupt and under criminal investigation by federal prosecutors. Etoro, a multi-asset trading platform, confirmed to CNN it would not be splurging on an ad this year, saying that while it continues to invest heavily in marketing, “we dial up or down specific channels based on many factors including market conditions.”

Coinbase declined to comment. Representatives for Crypto.com — the company behind the ad featuring LeBron James telling his younger self to “call your own shots” — didn’t respond to requests for comment.

But there will be at least one crypto-adjacent newcomer. Limit Break, a blockchain-based game developer, has secured a spot and intends to give away 40,000 NFTs, or non-fungible tokens (aka one-of-a-kind digital collectibles) to viewers who scan its QR code. Limit Break, founded in 2021, said it has already raised $200 million and expects to grow “a massive global audience.”

Despite what is being called a “crypto winter,” sports advertising remains a crucial avenue for the digital curency, marketing experts say, as their target demographics share significant overlap — sports fans and crypto traders tend to be mostly male and mostly young.

But turmoil in the crypto space means marketers are changing their tactics.

“The tone has shifted towards Web3-driven fan engagement over crypto-specific advertising,” said Silvia Lacayo, head of marketing at crypto exchange Bitstamp US. (Web3 refers to a future internet framework that is decentralized and gives consumers more control over their own data).

“Crypto firms are focusing less on crypto advertising and more on investing in better user experiences, products, and customer service,” Lacayo added.

Although we don’t yet know the final lineup of advertisers for the Super Bowl, the usual suspects — beer, snacks, cars — are on deck as usual.

“The fact that the crypto players are not going to be on the Super Bowl reflects the fact that that world has profoundly changed,” Calkins said. “Last year it was an exuberant time for crypto … This year, everything is different.”

A year ago, FTX fetched a private valuation of around $32 billion. Its Super Bowl ads featured Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen. Another FTX ad featured Larry David in a role that, a year later, appears prescient, with David sarcastically predicting that FTX won’t make it.

In November, nine months after the ad debuted, FTX filed for bankruptcy. Several former executives have been charged with wire fraud and conspiracy over allegations FTX misappropriated customer funds.

“It’s amazing how you can look back one year you realize we were in such a different place,” Calkins said. “Last year we had a Super Bowl advertiser saying, ‘fly me to the moon,’” he said, referencing the music in eToro’s ad, which many read as a nod to the meme-stock traders’ rally cry.

But a year of higher inflation, the end of pandemic-era stimulus and higher interest rates has put a damper on financial markets — not only crypto, but traditional markets as well.

That shift in mood will likely show up in the kinds of advertisers we see and in their messaging.

“Our economy’s in a strange place,” Calkins says. “So if you’re an advertiser, it’s hard to know — how do you play that?”

  • Tom Brady’s Video Game Career Dates Back To The 20th Century

Tom Brady’s Video Game Career Dates Back To The 20th Century

    [ad_1]

    Screenshot: MilesDawkins247

You can hear someone tell you Tom Brady’s age (45!) and it doesn’t really hit you, because the guy still looks pretty fit and healthy. To fully grasp the length of Brady’s tenure on this Earth, then, you need to realise that the man has appeared in a video game for the PlayStation. Like, the original PlayStation.

Brady, born in 1977, was drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft—as the 199th pick—and spent his first season in the league as a fourth-string QB. He was so far down the NFL pecking order, in fact, that for his first appearance in MaddenMadden 01, which not only released on the PS1 but also the Nintendo 64—he wasn’t even named, he was just listed on the Patriots depth chart as “QB #12″.

A year later, having moved up to the backup spot, he took over from the injured Drew Bledsoe, led the Patriots to a Super Bowl victory and the rest is history. Brady retires as the statistical leader in almost every category that matters for a QB, from passing yards to passing attempts to TD passes, while also leading the league in ball deflation controversies, crypto scam endorsements and weird ways to kiss your kid on the mouth.

To celebrate his career—or, for many more of you, to celebrate his retirement, announced today—I’ve put together this slideshow showing his video game career, from those early days on the PS1 through to the NFL 2K series, Madden and some other stops in between. It won’t be every game from every year, that would be boring—and for recent Madden games incredibly repetitive—but still, it’ll be a nice little walk down memory lane. Unless you remember playing any of these first few games, in which case I’m sorry for reminding you how old you are.

Tom Brady – NFL G.O.A.T. – Announces Retirement…Probably For Good This Time

    [ad_1]

On February 1, 2022, Tom Brady announced his retirement from the NFL. His retirement lasted…all of 40 days. Brady went on to play another season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, got divorced from wife Gisele Bundchen, and was ultimately eliminated from playoff contention in the Wild Card Round.

On February 1, 2023, Tom Brady announced his retirement from the NFL…”this time for good” he promises. Brady posted his “emotional retirement essay” on Twitter, saying that although he got his chance at the long goodbye last year, this time he really means it. After 23 seasons in the National Football League and seven Super Bowl wins, perhaps the greatest quarterback of all time is done playing.

Brady’s the most decorated player in league history. He was drafted 199th overall in 2000 to the New England Patriots along with Bill Belichick. When the Patriots QB got injured during the 2001 season, Brady launched a dynasty that would terrorize other teams. After 20 years with the Patriots, Brady joined the Tampa Bay squad alongside best friend, Patriot tight end Rob Gronkowski.

In that first season with the Bucs, Brady and Gronk led the team to their second franchise Super Bowl victory. Often known as “The GOAT,” Tom Brady has been in the league longer than some players have been alive. He spent exactly half his lifetime playing in the NFL and has inspired many to play the game.

He was both feared and respected amongst the league. Popular players in the league like Patrick Mahomes, whom Brady beat in the 2021 Super Bowl, have already shown their love for the newly minted retiree.

Tom Brady retires at 45, insisting this time it’s ‘for good’

    [ad_1]

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — This time, Tom Brady says he’s done for good.

The seven-time Super Bowl winner with New England and Tampa Bay announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday, exactly one year after first saying his playing days were over, by posting a brief video lasting just under one minute on social media.

Unlike last winter, though, the most successful quarterback in league history, as well as one of the greatest athletes in team sports, said his decision was final.

“Good morning guys. I’ll get to the point right away,” Brady says as the message begins. “I’m retiring. For good.”

He briefly retired after the 2021 season but wound up coming back for one more year with the Buccaneers. He retires at age 45, the owner of virtually every meaningful NFL passing record in an unprecedented 23-year career.

A year ago when he retired, it was in the form of a long Instagram post. But about six weeks later, he decided to return for one more run, citing “unfinished business” after an early playoff exit.

The Buccaneers — with whom he won a Super Bowl two seasons ago — made the playoffs again this season, losing in their playoff opener. And at the time, it begged the question about whether Brady would play again.

Only a couple of weeks later, he has given the answer.

“I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning, I figured I’d just press record and let you guys know first,” Brady says in the video. “I won’t be long-winded. You only get one super emotional retirement essay and I used mine up last year.

“I really thank you guys so much, to every single one of you for supporting me. My family, my friends, teammates, my competitors. I could go on forever. There’s too many. Thank you guys for allowing me to live my absolute dream. I wouldn’t change a thing. Love you all.”

Brady is the NFL’s career leader in yards passing (89,214) and touchdowns (649). He is the only player to win more than five Super Bowls and has been MVP of the game five times. He also holds marks for regular-season wins (251), Super Bowl appearances (10), playoff games and wins (48, 35), as well as playoff yards (13,400) and TDs (88).

“Tom’s legacy is unmatched in the history of this game. All the Super Bowl titles and statistical records speak for themselves, but the impact he had on so many people through the years is what I appreciate the most,” Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said.

“His imprint on this organization helped take us to the mountaintop. We will certainly miss him as our quarterback, but I will also miss him as a leader and friend,” Licht added. “Our entire organization is indebted to him for what he provided us over the past three years. We won’t ever forget the wins or the accolades, and his influence will be felt for years to come.”

Brady announced his retirement one day after attending the premiere of “80 for Brady” — which comes out Friday — in Los Angeles. The movie tells the story of four lifelong friends, played by Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, who went to a Super Bowl to see Brady play.

He was asked Tuesday night whether he felt a connection working with women — the four stars range in age from 76 to 91 — who don’t want to retire.

“They’re working hard and they love it. So good for them,” Brady told The Associated Press. “You know, it’s just that’s what life is about. You got to, you know, wake up every day with a purpose. And when you find something you love to do, you know, it’s hard to stop. You really enjoy it. And there’s a lot of aspects that you do enjoy. So they still bring it at this age. It’s really unbelievable to watch them on set and how much energy they have. And I certainly was inspired by them and learned a lot of lessons on this whole experience.”

Famously underrated coming into the NFL — he was picked 199th in the 2000 draft by the Patriots, behind six other quarterbacks, three kickers and a punter — Brady certainly wasn’t expected to become synonymous with greatness. He played in one game as a rookie, completing one of three passes for six yards.

The next year, it all changed.

Brady took over as the Patriots’ starter, the team beat the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl that capped the 2001 season and he and New England coach Bill Belichick were well on their way to becoming the most successful coach-QB duo in football history.

More Super Bowl wins came after the 2003 and 2004 seasons. The Patriots returned to football’s mountaintop for a fourth time in Brady’s era a decade later to cap the 2014 season, the start of three more titles in a span of five years.

He signed with Tampa Bay in free agency in 2020 and added a seventh Super Bowl ring to his collection in his first season with his new team. The Bucs and won 37 games (including postseason) with Brady at quarterback — third most in the league over the past three seasons behind Kansas City (46) and Buffalo (41).

“I think I’ve been on the record dozens of times saying there’s no quarterback I’d rather have than Tom Brady, and I still feel that way,” Belichick said in 2021 — shortly before Tampa Bay, with Brady, came to New England and beat the Patriots in a game dubbed “The Return.” “I was very lucky to have Tom as the quarterback, to coach him, and he was as good as any coach could ever ask for.”

Brady set league single-season records for completions (490) and pass attempts (733) while throwing for 4,643 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions in his final season. The Bucs, however ranked dead last in rushing offense and, forced to rely almost solely of Brady’s arm, struggled to get the ball into the end zone.

After scoring 61 touchdowns in 2021, Tampa Bay slipped to 31 last season and averaged just 18.4 points per game — down from over 30 in Brady’s first two seasons with the Bucs.

At 8-9, Brady’s only losing season in over two decades as a NFL starter, the Bucs became just the fourth team in league history to earn a postseason berth with a losing mark in a non-strike year. The offensive struggles continued during a lopsided loss to Dallas in the NFC wild-card round.

Brady won three NFL MVP awards, was a first-team All-Pro three times and was selected to the Pro Bowl 15 times.

Brady and model Gisele Bündchen finalized their divorce this past fall, during the Bucs’ season. It ended a 13-year marriage between two superstars who respectively reached the pinnacles of football and fashion.

It was announced last year that when Brady retires from playing, he would join Fox Sports as a television analyst in a 10-year, $375 million deal.

Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts to make history as first-ever Black starting quarterbacks to face off in Super Bowl

    [ad_1]

When Super Bowl LVII kicks off in Arizona on February 12, Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts will make history as the first-ever Black starting quarterbacks to play against each other in the championship.

Mahomes will be making his third trip to the big game after a dramatic 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. He was the third Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl in 2020 when he led the Chiefs over the San Francisco 49ers. He lost against the Tampa Buccaneers a year later.

If Mahomes wins against the Eagles, he will be the first Black quarterback with multiple Super Bowl wins.

If the Eagles beat the Chiefs, Hurts would become the fourth Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl, joining Mahomes, Doug Williams and Russell Wilson.

The history-making matchup wasn’t lost on some on Twitter.

Warren Moon, a Hall of Fame NFL quarterback and who is Black, said he was “proud” to see them both in the Super Bowl.

Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson remarked on it, also pointing out that both quarterbacks are in the running for the league’s MVP race.

“What a historic moment, this will be the first time two Black starting quarterbacks will face each other in the Super Bowl, and they both are leading candidates for NFL MVP! I can’t wait to watch!” he wrote.

Sports journalist Taylor Rooks tweeted that it was “glorious” to have two Black starting quarterbacks in the game.

Athletic reporter Mike Jones pointed out their matchup comes more than three decades off another history-making moment in the NFL.

“First time two Black quarterbacks have faced in the Super Bowl 35 years after Doug Williams became the first to start in and win a Super Bowl,” Jones wrote.

Williams told Andscape in an interview he “couldn’t be happier” to see Mahomes and Hurts in the big game.

“I’ve got such a smile on my face right now, but I’ve got water in my eyes, too,” he told the outlet, formerly known as The Undefeated. “I’m talking, but I don’t think I can even explain what this means. We have come such a long way. It has been so hard, so many barriers, but we did it.”

Mahomes and Hurts aside, the game will also feature Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce and Eagles center Jason Kelce, the first-ever brothers to play against each other in the Super Bowl. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid will also be coaching against his former team, which he was a part of from 1999 to 2012.

The Kansas City Chiefs are advancing to Super Bowl LVII following a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship game on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

After suffering a high ankle sprain last week in the Chiefs’ Divisional Round win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Patrick Mahomes led the team to a victory in a back-and-forth game.

Kansas City got out to a 6-0 lead after two field goals and before halftime, Mahomes found his favorite target – tight end Travis Kelce for a touchdown to take a 13-3 lead. Kelce was listed as questionable to play coming into the game due to a back injury.

Right before halftime, the Bengals drove down the field and kicked a field goal to cut the deficit to 13-6.

On the Bengals’ first offensive possession of the second half, quarterback Joe Burrow found wide receiver Tee Higgins for a 27-yard touchdown to tie up the game at 13. However, a clearly hobbled Mahomes and the Chiefs responded with a laser touchdown throw to Marquez Valdes-Scantling to take the lead right back.

The Chiefs defensive unit shut down the high-powered Bengals offense until the first play of the fourth quarter.

On fourth down, Burrow heaved the ball down the field and found Ja’Marr Chase for a 35-yard strike to move Cincinnati deep into Kansas City territory. Two plays later, the Bengals scored on a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Samaje Perine to tie the game yet again.

The Chiefs sacked Burrow on third down to give them the ball back with less than a minute left and the score tied at 20. Chiefs returner Skyy Moore returned the Bengals punt 29 yards to set the offense up with good field position. On third down, Mahomes scrambled and as he went out of bounds, Bengals defensive end Joseph Ossai pushed him and was called for a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty which put the Chiefs in field goal range.

Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker knocked down the 45-yard field goal to send the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl for the third time in four seasons.

Earlier in the day, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-7, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, to advance to championship game for the first time since the 2017-18 season.

The Eagles scored on their first possession and didn’t look back in the rout of the 49ers.

The 49ers were momentarily left without rookie starting quarterback Brock Purdy after he suffered a right elbow injury in the first quarter, on a hit by Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick that forced a fumble. Josh Johnson, who is the fourth string quarterback for San Francisco, filled in for Purdy until the third quarter before being ruled out of the game with a concussion.

Playing on the injured elbow, Purdy re-entered the game but the 49ers offense struggled to tally any points.

Meanwhile, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia run-game, ran all over the 49ers defense, notching 148 rushing yards and scoring all four touchdowns on the ground. With his rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, Hurts (15) passed Cameron Newton (14) for most rushing touchdown’s in a single season by a QB in NFL history, including playoffs, according to NFL Research.

Guy Fieri, the Emmy Award-winning restauranteur and spike-haired host of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, is hosting a mashup of culinary arts and music festivals no one could’ve seen coming.

Fieri has announced Guy’s Flavortown Tailgate, a Super Bowl game day experience in Phoenix. Equal parts food festival and music festival, it’s the largest free culinary event in football history, according to Forbes.

Fieri, a longtime country music fan with ties to California’s Stagecoach Festival, has lassoed in a headlining performance from Diplo, the Grammy-winning DJ who famously moonlights as a country artist. The two have been friends since as early as 2019, when they ripped shots at the SoCal festival for Diplo’s “So Long” music video.

The NFL confirmed Tuesday that Ralph will be included in the pregame lineup for the 2023 Super Bowl, which takes place Feb. 12. The “Abbott Elementary” star is set to perform the hymn “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before kickoff.

Ralph expressed her excitement for the milestone gig on Instagram. “Come on now,” she wrote. “Don’t you ever give up on you baby!”

She shared similar sentiments on Twitter, writing: “Someone wake me up from this dream!”

A number of Ralph’s famous pals, including Oprah Winfrey and “Abbott Elementary” creator and co-star Quinta Brunson, congratulated the actor on the news.

“Yes lift them!!! Sheryl Lee Ralph in the buildinggggg,” actor Tanika Ray wrote on Instagram. “May we have a dose of SLR everywhere!!!!!!”

Singer LaTavia Roberson urged Ralph to “continue to INSPIRE LITTLE BLACK GIRLS LIKE MYSELF.”

Ralph has been enjoying a career resurgence as of late thanks to her portrayal of kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard on ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” for which she received an Emmy Award last year.

Her appearance at the Super Bowl will be an opportunity for the world to recognize her less-heralded musical prowess. Prior to her television fame, the actor received acclaim ― and a Tony nomination ― for originating the role of Deena Jones in the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls” in 1981.

The 2023 Super Bowl, which will take place in Glendale, Arizona, is shaping up to be a night of must-see TV for music fans as well as sports enthusiasts.

In addition to Ralph’s performance, viewers can expect to hear Chris Stapleton and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds singing the national anthem and “America the Beautiful,” respectively. And megastar (and Oscar nominee) Rihanna is set to kick off her hotly anticipated musical comeback as the evening’s halftime show performer.

  • How to watch or stream the Divisional Round of the NFL’s playoffs live, online, and free without cable

How to watch or stream the Divisional Round of the NFL’s playoffs live, online, and free without cable

    [ad_1]

Four games. Infinite drama. Welcome to the divisional playoff round of the 2022-203 NFL season.

The league’s eight best teams collide this weekend, with two games on Saturday and two on Sunday. And every one of those is likely to be a banger.

The Philadelphia Eagles will host the New York Giants in what’s expected to be a can’t miss game Saturday night, while the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals meet again on Sunday afternoon, roughly three weeks after Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest in the first half of a game between the two. The weekend wraps up with old rivals the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers battling one last time.

So, cancel any plans you might have had—or if you can’t, make sure your phone is charged. Here’s a look at all of the matchups this week and advice on how best to catch the games.

Which NFL teams are playing this week? And what channels are airing the games?

Here’s this week’s lineup. (The home team is listed second.)

    Saturday, Jan. 21

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Kansas City Chiefs, 4:30 p.m. ET on NBC

New York Giants vs. Philadelphia Eagles, 8:15 p.m. ET on Fox

    Sunday, Jan. 22

Cincinnati Bengals vs Buffalo Bills, 3:00 p.m. ET on CBS

Dallas Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers, 6:30 p.m. ET on Fox

How can I watch NFL games for free—even if I am out of market?

The best way to watch any sort of network programming for free on a big screen is with a good HD antenna. And all of this week’s NFL games will air on broadcast networks, meaning you’ll be able to watch even if you don’t have a cable subscription. To ensure you’re getting the most reliable signal, be sure to test the antenna in multiple locations in your home.

Can I stream NFL games live online if I don’t have a cable subscription?

Certainly! Here are a few options:

    Peacock

NBC’s streaming service will give you access to several games, including all Sunday night matchups. You can get a seven-day free trial, followed by a $5 or $10 monthly charge. (The free version of Peacock does not include live sports.)

    Paramount+

CBS’s streaming service will give you access to games aired on that network. You can get a one-week free trial, followed by a $5 or $10 monthly charge.

    Disney+

Disney’s bundle of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ no longer has a free trial, so you’ll have to pay $13.99 per month for all three combined (or $19.99 per month for no ads on Hulu). Including Live TV in the bundle bumps the price to $70 per month ($76 with no ads).

    Hulu with Live TV

The free trial on this service is no longer offered, as well. It will cost you $70 per month.

    YouTubeTV

After up to a two-week trial, you can expect monthly charges of $65.

    Sling TV

Dish Network’s Sling recently increased its prices. The lower-tiered “Orange” plan will now run you $40 per month. Adding the more comprehensive “Blue” plan bumps the cost to $55 per month. (A $5 per month increase for each.) The seven-day free trial has disappeared along with the price increase, but the cord-cutting service is offering 50% off of the first month’s bill.

    DirecTV Stream

Formerly known as DirecTV Now, AT&T TVNow and AT&T TV, this oft-renamed streaming service will run you $70 per month and up after the free trial option.

    Fubo TV

This sports-focused cord-cutting service carries broadcast networks in most markets. There’s a seven-day free trial, followed by monthly charges of $70–$100, depending on the channels you choose.

Can I watch NFL games on Amazon?

Not playoff games. Amazon’s contract with the NFL does not extend into the post season.

Does the NFL offer any viewing packages to watch the games I want?

    Several, in fact.

    NFL App

The NFL App will let you stream games that are being broadcast locally in your market on Sundays. If you want to watch an “out of market” game, you’ve got two choices.

    NFL+

Watch live local and out of market games and (with the premium subscription) replays. There’s a seven-day free trial, after which you’re looking at a $30 charge per season. ($80 for premium.)

    NFL Sunday Ticket

DirecTV customers have access to it, but (if you meet the conditions, like living in an apartment complex or some area where you can’t get DirecTV) you can also sign up for an online version, letting you watch any NFL game live this season. There’s a one-week trial, then you’re looking at monthly charges of $73.49 per month for a four-month period or $293.36 for the entire season (or $99 for four months or $396).

The adventurous hair and makeup! If this trailer is any indication, Rihanna will be pulling out all of the fashion stops for her halftime show. Scroll down to watch the video for yourself.

4X Super Bowl Champion Rob Gronkowski knows a thing or two about Big Game Weekend and this year, he’s competing for the MVP of Fun at the return of his personally curated music festival Gronk Beach presented by The Beast Unleashed, the first-ever adult beverage from Monster Brewing. The former University of Arizona star will have a homecoming of sorts, celebrating the biggest weekend in sports with the ultimate beach party and music festival taking place at the legendary Talking Stick Resort, Scottsdale’s hottest entertainment destination, on Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning at 12 p.m. Produced by Medium Rare, with headliners 21 Savage, Diplo, and Lil Jon, Gronk Beach will continue to raise the bar, bringing unparalleled Gronk family energy to Phoenix. Tickets and WYNN Nightlife VIP Tables will be available via presale on Thursday, Jan. 12, beginning at 10 a.m. MT at GRONKBEACH.com. Register for tickets now.

Grammy Award-winning rapper 21 Savage will head to the pool as co-headliner for the event. 21 Savage, alongside Drake, put out a Billboard #1 album in late 2022 and, since entering the scene in 2016, Savage has gone platinum — 16 times. Performing with 21 Savage at Gronk Beach is Grammy-winning superstar DJ DIPLO and hip-hop icon Lil John. Founder of global dancehall group Major Lazer, the critically acclaimed DJ has racked up dozens of industry award nominations and taken home three Grammy awards and three iHeart Radio Music Awards. Known for his part in creating the popular southern music and lifestyle movement of Crunk, Lil John is one of the most recognizable icons in music and pop culture. In addition, DJ Irie, Bijou, and Sommer Ray will round out the lineup.

With prices starting at $199, all tickets will include a six-hour open bar, complimentary bites, and the greatest views of the legendary headliners. All general admission tickets, VIP tickets, and WYNN Nightlife VIP Tables can be purchased online at GRONKBEACH.com beginning this Thursday. Adding to the excitement, Gronk Beach fans will have the first opportunity to sample The Beast Unleashed, an all-new adult beverage from our friends at Monster. As the presenting partner of this year’s Gronk Beach, The Beast will unleash many unforgettable experiences, including an epic onstage cheers moment with Gronk himself.

With massive cultural impact, Gronk Beach has sold out thousands of tickets in minutes in both 2020 (Miami) and 2022 (Las Vegas) while attracting major talent, including The Chainsmokers, Kaskade, Rick Ross, and GORDO (Carnage), as well as celebrity attendees such as Bill Belichick, Lizzo, Julian Edelman, Nate Diaz, Travis Kelce, and so many more. As the most over-the-top poolside party of all time, Gronk Beach has garnered media from the Official Super Bowl Pregame Show on Fox, ESPN, CNN, Forbes, Sports Illustrated, CNBC, Barstool, The Late Show with James Corden, and more.

Gronk Beach presented by The Beast Unleashed 2023 will be no different — blitzing the competition once again. With dedicated poolside cabanas and bars featuring custom beverages from the likes of Monster Energy, Licor 43, and Teremana Tequila, sponsored experiences and activations, luau performers, and musical superstars, Gronk Beach will quickly become the “must attend” event of Big Game Weekend. For those looking to experience the biggest competition of the weekend outside of the game itself, guests will have to look no further than the Corona-sponsored celebrity volleyball game taking place on Saturday at Corona Beach. Live from the Corona pool, this volleyball game will test celebrities such as Gronk himself as they go head-to-head in an epic game of volleyball in the water.

“You may not see me playing in the big game this year, but there’s one thing I’m not retiring from and that’s having a great time. You’ll get what you expect from me (and more) at Gronk Beach — great music, flowing drinks, lots of dancing, and basically the most exciting event of the weekend outside of the Big Game itself,” said Gronk. “Thanks to the support of The Beast Unleashed, guests can expect great performances by some of my favorite artists in the world, including my pals Diplo, 21 Savage, Lil Jon and more.”

Monster and all-new flavored malt beverage The Beast Unleashed are proud to present Gronk Beach. Featuring custom experiences, bars, giveaways, and activities, The Beast will keep the party going. Fans looking to be among the first to sample The Beast can head over to The Beast Bar experience or step out of the sun and recharge at the Monster Energy activation located near the pool. Beyond celebrating its VIP release, The Beast will take over the mainstage with a custom “cheers” moment led by the Gronk Beach event host, Gronk himself. Grab a can and raise your hands — here’s to the greatest Gronk Beach yet.

“Everyone’s favorite energy drink, Monster, is turning 21, so we figured why not celebrate by making our first adult beverage,” says Renold Aparicio, VP of Monster Equity Brands. “To make The Beast Unleashed, we brewed up the smoothest-tasting alcohol, hit delete on the caffeine and sugar, then blended it with Monster’s tried-and-true flavors. We can’t wait to unleash The Beast for the first time at Gronk Beach before it is released this month in select states across the country.”

Corona embodies “La Vida Más Fina” or “The Fine Life” as a modern expression of the brand’s lifestyle. Corona is proud to partner with Gronk Beach to curate memorable consumer experiences across the event. Introducing an over-the-top Corona Beach activation featuring a pool, volleyball, photo moments, and more, Corona will ensure all fans ages 21 and older find la vida más fina in Phoenix. Amongst the sand and pool at Corona Beach, an epic celebrity volleyball game will take place. Featuring Gronk, Camille Kostek, and other celebrities to be announced, this epic game of volleyball will put our favorite celebrities head-to-head in the biggest game outside of the Big Game.

  • Rams, Bucs, Packers earn wins on same day in upside-down NFC

Rams, Bucs, Packers earn wins on same day in upside-down NFC

    [ad_1]

Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers led comeback wins and the Los Angeles Rams dominated Russell Wilson and the Broncos.

It was a triumphant Christmas for the Buccaneers, Packers and Rams as many figured it would be when the schedule was released in May. The NFC’s top three preseason Super Bowl favorites were expected to be jockeying for playoff positioning Sunday.

Instead, the Rams (5-10) are trying to avoid the most losses by a defending Super Bowl champion. The Packers (7-8) need help just to make the playoffs. The Buccaneers (7-8) lead the dreadful NFC South with a first-place showdown coming up against Carolina.

While the NFC is upside down, the AFC has lived up to expectations. The Buffalo Bills (12-3) and Kansas City Chiefs (12-3) entered the season as the top two Super Bowl favorites and they are 1-2 in the race for the No. 1 seed. The defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals (11-4) are third with a chance to move up when they host the Bills next Monday night.

Brady rallied Tampa Bay from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to a 19-16 overtime victory at Arizona following another poor offensive performance. The 45-year-old, seven-time Super Bowl champion threw two picks for the third straight game, the offense had no rhythm until it went into hurry-up mode late and the depleted offensive line lost another key player.

The Buccaneers would clinch the division title with a win over the Panthers (6-9) on New Year’s Day. They’d earn the No. 4 seed in the NFC and home-field advantage in a wild-card game with the most likely opponent being the Dallas Cowboys (11-4).

The Bucs opened the season with a 19-3 win in Dallas. These are two different teams now. If Brady and the Bucs play the way they have for most of the season, the Cowboys will beat them by double digits.

Brady doesn’t seem to trust his offensive line, so he’s getting rid of the ball at a faster pace than he ever has, and he appears to lack confidence in his receivers at times.

The offense has been out of sync all season and is averaging fewer than 18 points. But the defense has stepped up and Brady has engineered three comeback wins in the last seven games.

The Buccaneers had a lower seed in 2020 and had to win three road games in the playoffs on their way to a Super Bowl title in Brady’s first season in Tampa Bay. That offense was dynamic, averaging more than 30 points per game.

They’ll need to play far better than they’ve shown to have a shot at winning a playoff game.

Rodgers and the Packers were headed toward elimination a few weeks ago after a 4-8 start. But they’ve won three straight games and now can make the playoffs with two more wins plus a loss by Washington (7-7-1) or two losses by the Giants (8-6-1).

Green Bay trailed Miami 20-10 in the second quarter on Sunday before outscoring the Dolphins 16-0 the rest of the way. The defense picked Tua Tagovailoa three times in the fourth quarter to help secure the 26-20 upset on the road.

The Packers haven’t resembled the team that won 13 games in each of the three previous seasons. But they’re starting to come together down the stretch.

In 2010 when Rodgers won his only Super Bowl, the Packers made the playoffs as the sixth and final seed in the NFC. They host the Vikings (12-3) and Lions (7-8) in the final two games with a chance to sneak in.

The Rams already have been knocked out of the playoff race, but Baker Mayfield has made them interesting. He was excellent in a 51-14 win against Denver, completing 24 of 28 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Mayfield has led Los Angeles to two victories in three games since he joined the team two days before leading a comeback win over Las Vegas on Dec. 8.

The Rams, Buccaneers and Packers each won in the same week for only the second time this season and the first since Week 2.

Despite their struggles, Brady and Rodgers still have a shot. Don’t count them out until they’re eliminated.
