    2023’s Hope For Individual Awards

    Once again, the Eagles saw themselves the talk of the NFL for the first 11 weeks of the season. But putting on a show in October and November doesn’t get you very far when you manage to go 1-6 in the final 7 weeks of your season.

    Maybe if the Eagles managed to keep their season afloat, some recognition might’ve been acknowledged come award season. Instead, the Eagles only saw one player nominated for an award at by the end of the year.

    While Jalen Hurts was in MVP talks after his overtime victory against the Bills. 6 Losses to end the year regardless of a defensive collapse or a stale offense by design, will minimize any hype you might’ve had during week 11.

    The ONE Eagle who was able to receive votes for an award was 9th overall pick DT Jalen Carter. Projected to be a frontrunner for the award the ENTIRE season. Here’s how Defensive Rookie Of The Year was broken up.

    Who is Usher?

    Born Usher Raymond IV, the 45-year-old singer, dancer, actor, producer and philanthropist is known to fans as Usher. The Texas native grew up in Chattanooga, TN, where he was encouraged by his mother, Jonetta Patton, to join a local church youth choir.     Usher is on a roll with a packed agenda that includes an upcoming world tour, a new album release and a highly anticipated performance at the Super Bowl 2024 halftime show on Sunday during the matchup between the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.

    Las Vegas is where the singer has been gearing up for what could be the biggest show of his career.  When asked how he plans to condense his 30-year career into a 12-minute performance, Usher told “CBS Mornings” that JAY-Z, the Super Bowl’s live music entertainment strategist, gave him one piece of important advice. 

    “He left it to me to, you know, make sure that I didn’t miss the culture. That’s the one thing that he said. ‘You know, we’re doing this for the culture,’” Usher said. “‘I want you to play the ones that we — that we love, that we know you for. Give ’em the moments that they, you know, look forward to seeing,’” like, ‘Go for the culture.’ And I’m like, ‘All right, I got you.’”

    Usher’s Las Vegas residency and passion for skating have been part of his preparation. He playfully confirmed to Gayle King, “I’m skating,” adding a layer of anticipation about what his performance will include. As to whether he will take his shirt off, a move he made famous in his early career, Usher remained mum about it.

    With his performance, Usher will become the first independent artist to grace the Super Bowl stage, something he says serves as inspiration for other artists. 

    “You know what hope that gives artists? I’m an independent artist now. Not, you know, I am playing catalog records. But for the most part,  the work that I did here in Las Vegas, it led to this. So that means you, too, can believe in yourself,” he said.

    Despite winning multiple Grammys, Usher shared a personal reflection on never having the opportunity to express his gratitude on the awards stage for that event, making his upcoming Super Bowl performance even more meaningful to him.

    “I’ve never literally walked on stage and said, ‘Thank you guys for recognizing what I do.’ But I can say I actually played the Super Bowl,” said Usher.

    Usher also said that he remained in Las Vegas with the goal of becoming the halftime show entertainer for the Super Bowl.

    “I believe in the idea of manifestation and affirmations, right? The moment that I heard — I’ll tell you this now ’cause I have it. The moment I heard that they were entertaining the Super Bowl comin’ to Vegas, I was like, ‘I’m not leaving,’” said Usher.

    As Usher prepares for the big day, he shared his hope to keep his emotions in check, but acknowledged the significance of the moment.

    “It’s gonna be a celebration. I’m gonna try my hardest not to cry, break down and cry on the stage,” he said.

    With subtle themes of rustic patriotism and all-American heroism, the Belgian multinational brewing company wooed viewers via man’s best friend — and barely featured their product at all. In 2016, it was ranked as the most popular ad ever to air in the 50-year history of the NFL’s premier event. The lesson here is clear: wholesome content appeals to almost everyone, and authenticity is universal — eclipsing predictable, emotionally empty product placement.

    When planning our 2005 “What Did You Ever Do Without Them?” commercial for Post-It notes, the 3M team took the same tack, opting for cuteness that resonates with a general audience. While this sentiment does play well, what doesn’t make the cut are the unique challenges of filming with unpredictable (albeit adorable) animals.

    2. Americans huddle up for humor

    Whether it’s a torrential downpour of lemons forecasted by Budweiser, Homer Simpson swiping his Mastercard or the rapid transitions and smooth-talking of the infamous Old Spice guy, Super Bowl audiences are looking for laughs between plays. Since laughter is shown to improve short-term memory, funny commercials are far more memorable, and so are the brands/products they represent.

    While one-hit-wonders may have their moment, brands that establish likable recurring characters in their ads are especially adept at building brand awareness and memory recall of the hero products advertised. The average American will likely recognize Progressive’s iconic associate Flo, Geico’s recently-revived Caveman, Allstate’s mischievous Mayhem man and even Liberty Mutual’s seemingly inescapable LiMu Emu. The combination of clever humor and unique, original characters makes for an effective commercial that will continue to build and enhance brand awareness for years to come.

    3. Social issues are shared goals

    More than ever, Super Bowl commercials are addressing social issues, reflecting a shift in consumer preferences toward purpose-driven brands. By aligning themselves with meaningful causes and communicating their commitment to societal issues, brands aim to foster a positive image and build loyalty.

    For example, Dove’s “Real Strength” commercial (2015) challenges stereotypical gender roles, including what it means to be a “real man”; Nike supported Colin Kaepernick’s social activism by featuring Kaepernick in their 2019 “Dream Crazy” ad. Of course, for these allegiances/political stances to be effective, companies must practice what they preach — which is to say that authentic initiatives within the company must also back up these public allyships. Otherwise, companies run the risk of a backlash similar to that against Budweiser following their controversial Dylan Mulvaney partnership.

    4. Pass the ball to the consumer

    Ads that end with a Call to Action go beyond traditional one-way communication, inviting audiences to leave a lasting impact. One effective example was Coca-Cola’s 2014 “#AmericaIsBeautiful” ad, which encouraged viewers to share their own moments of beauty using the company’s hashtag. The genius of this hashtag is in its simplicity; much like Budweiser’s “Puppy Love” ad, which featured a minimal branded product, #AmericaIsBeautiful celebrates the country rather than Coca-Cola. Impressively, the owned hashtag created an onslaught of positive conversation around the brand without actually using any branding. This interactive element cultivated a trend of user-generated content while extending the reach of the company’s campaign and engagement.

    5. Celebrities are the MVPs

    Whether it’s a cranky pre-Snickers bar Betty White, Ryan Reynolds parking a Hyundai or Harrison Ford chatting with an Amazon Alexa, brands often turn to celebrities to boost the appeal of their Super Bowl commercials. When humor and emotional substance may be lacking, there’s no substitute for star power, and when companies can combine clever scripts with well-known faces, a viral moment is all but guaranteed. That said, companies must be careful when seeking celebrity endorsements — choosing a celebrity who resonates with the targeted audience and whose image/voice aligns with the company’s brand values is essential.

    With every Super Bowl, business leaders can become the brand consumers root for. Super Bowl commercials provide a unique and colossal opportunity to capture the attention of tens of millions of people who are not only exposed to the commercials but also look forward to them. Ultimately, the most successful are those who entertain and effectively communicate their brand’s message and values.

    Microsoft on Sunday is returning to the Super Bowl with a commercial for its AI-powered chatbot — a sign of the company’s determination to shed its image as a stodgy software maker and reorient its products around the promise of artificial intelligence.

    The minute-long commercial, posted to YouTube on Thursday, depicts people using their mobile phones to access Copilot, the AI assistant Microsoft rolled out last year. The app is shown helping people to automate a variety of tasks, from generating snippets of computer code to creating digital art.

    Microsoft’s Super Bowl spot, its first appearance in the game in four years, highlights the company’s efforts to reinvent itself as an AI-focused company. The tech giant has poured billions into developing its AI prowess, including investing $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, and has integrated the technology into mainstay products like Microsoft Word, Excel and Azure.

    Now, Microsoft wants consumers and businesses searching for a boost from AI-powered programs to turn to its services, rather than rivals such as Google, which on Thursday announced an upgrade to its competing AI program. 

    For global tech companies, much is riding on who ultimately wins the AI race, Wedbush Securities Analyst Dan Ives told CBS MoneyWatch, with projections that the market could swell to $1.3 trillion by 2032. “This is no longer your grandfather’s Microsoft … and the Super Bowl is a unique time to further change perceptions,” he said.

    Advertisers are paying about $7 million for 30 seconds of airtime in this year’s game, with an expected audience that could swell to more than 100 million viewers. 

    Microsoft wants viewers to know that its Copilot app is getting an upgrade “coincident with the launch of our Super Bowl ad,” including a “cleaner, sleeker look” and suggested prompts that could help people tap its AI capabilities, wrote Microsoft Consumer Chief Marketing officer Yusuf Mehdi in a blog post this week. 

    Microsoft’s strategy so far is paying dividends. Its cloud-based revenue surged 24% to $33.7 billion in its most recent quarter, helped by the integration of AI into its Azure cloud computing service, for example. And investors are buying in — the company’s market valuation of $3.1 trillion now ranks it ahead of Apple as the world’s most valuable company.

    The Super Bowl has become the most-watched primetime telecast in recent years, as viewing audiences have become more fragmented with the rise of streaming platforms and social media. In 2023, the event attracted an audience of roughly 115 million viewers, or twice as many spectators as the second most-watched televised event that year, according to Variety’s primetime ranking.

    According to Ives, that unmatched exposure could help Microsoft maintain its lead over several big tech companies in an increasingly intense face to dominate the AI market.  

    “It was a poker move for the ages with Microsoft getting ahead in AI … now others are chasing them,” Ives said. Microsoft “is in a Ferrari in the left lane going 100 miles an hour, while other competitors are in a minivan going 30 miles an hour.”

    A Michelin-trained Napa chef is caught up in the Super Bowl frenzy on several fronts.  

    While he’s busy serving up Kansas City inspired Super Bowl fare, his cousin is a 49er.

    Chef Darryl Bell of Stateline Road Smokehouse has been swamped filling hundreds of orders of ribs, brisket, wings and other barbecue favorites for Super Bowl weekend.

    “We came in running today and it’s not stopping and it won’t slow down,” said Darryl.

    But while the chef’s been going gangbusters in his Napa kitchen, his cousin is gearing up to go gangbusters on the field.  Wide receiver Ronnie Bell is the chef’s cousin. 

    “Ronnie Bell he’s a beast, special teams wide receiver. It’s his rookie year, coming straight out of Michigan and he’s just been crushing it,” said Darryl.

    The chef says he couldn’t be more proud of his cousin, but the Kansas City native says the Chiefs and Niners matchup is a bit difficult for his family who are lifelong Chiefs fans. 

    “It’s a little tear there, a little split, but I think ultimately I just want Ronnie to do great as I know he will … and for the Chiefs to do great as well,” he said. “I am rooting for a great game, I would say. The Chiefs are always there, but I would say ultimately Ronnie is blood so you gotta go with family.”

    The Michelin trained chef says his culinary creations are Kansas City inspired. In fact, his signature barbecue sauce is named after his hometown. 

    “For us what we do here it’s all Kansas City style so that’s obviously where I’m from,” he said. “Mixing that but kind of with the culinary Michelin world background to kind of create a slightly more elevated in terms of flavor for barbecue.”

    Derryl says he’ll be happy no matter what the outcome of Sunday’s game. And hopes his barbecue dishes make his customers feel like winners no matter what too. 

    “This becomes the highlight of the game that this for them is something where all their guests that they have to their house say ‘wow the game was great but this food, those burnt ends, those ribs were amazing,’” he said.

    Derryl and his partner plan to open this new 5,000-square-foot location this spring.  

    There will  be plenty of room there for both Chiefs and Niners fans.

    This week, as other people were placing last-minute bets and looking up guacamole recipes in preparation for the Super Bowl, I was brushing up on my knowledge of the international date line – along with every other Swiftie and the Embassy of Japan.

    Everyone wanted to know if Taylor Swift could make it from her Eras Tour performance in Tokyo on Feb. 10 to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas on Feb. 11. But as the time zone math was mathing all over the internet, I became curious about something else. Although Tay should arrive stateside to see her boy Travis Kelce play in plenty of time (thanks to said date line, and despite a 12-ish-hour flight and a 17-hour time difference), I wondered if she’d also be feeling some intense jet lag.

    I, for one, am usually wrecked by international travel . . . but I am also a lowly, Dickensian Economy betch. I do own a travel pillow but haven’t remembered to bring it on a flight since the day I bought it at the airport.

    I needed to seriously investigate: does traveling on a private plane improve jet lag? Will Tay be feeling a bit drowsy while she’s supporting Trav and dining on chicken and seemingly ranch in her box? To find out, I asked some sleep experts (and someone who has access to private jets!) what we should know.

    Is Jet Lag Less Terrible When You Fly Private?

    Obviously, flying private has perks and downfalls (such as contributing to the slow demise of our hallowed planet, one carbon emission at a time – perhaps the most cryptic and Machiavellian thing one can do).

    But those perks, man.

    Sleep experts and private flyers alike have confirmed to POPSUGAR that, yes, private travel can help a lot with jet lag. There are a few reasons for this.

    The first thing to think about when it comes to jet lag is your circadian rhythm, or your body clock that repeats every 24 hours. Another word for jet lag is “circadian dysrhythmia,” and it basically just means your internal clock isn’t in sync with the time where you are, says Mike Gradisar, PhD, head of sleep science at Sleep Cycle (who told me before our interview that he’s “more of a Tool fan” but was looking forward to talking about Taylor).

    Light can help shift your circadian rhythms and sync your body clock to a different time. Exposing yourself to light or darkness can essentially trick your body into going to sleep or waking up at a time it’s not used to, Dr. Gradisar says. That could enable you to “make that change to the new location a lot quicker and reduce jet lag,” he says.

    And when you have a private jet, you have more control over the cabin light you’re exposed to. If you need to sleep during the flight (or trick your body into thinking it’s already nighttime), you can turn off the lights and shut all the window blinds on a private plane and feel reasonably confident that the pilot won’t randomly turn them back on when he makes an announcement.

    The lie-flat seats (and lack of flight attendants accidentally crushing your foot with their trolley) also helps, if your goal is to catch up on sleep while in the air.

    But Swift may take the opposite tack. Assuming she leaves Tokyo on Saturday, Feb. 10, around midnight local time after her show, she’ll likely arrive in Las Vegas around 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. local time the same night. (Yes, because of the time zones, she’s essentially going back in time – although thankfully not to December.) Rather than sleeping on her flight and touching down well-rested (and therefore unable to doze off during the US nighttime, sending her into a jet-lag spiral), she might decide to try to stay awake on the plane so she’ll be nice and tired by the time she makes it back to a bedroom stateside.

    Again, flying private can help her with this goal. Sure, the discomfort of commercial flights can keep you awake – but so can the extended entertainment options associated with private planes.

    Private jets are a lot less boring than commercial flights, according to *Peter, someone I met on Hinge who graciously agreed to be interviewed for this story about his time traveling internationally on his family’s private jet (I feel Taylor would approve of this Swiftian sourcing method).

    He recalls one flight on international waters with his parents: “You felt like it was a plane that was designed for the people who were going to fly that day,” Peter says. “We had a TV. If we wanted to play video games, we could.” If Swift does fly private, her plane could be stocked with plenty of stimulating activities to keep her up for the whole flight.

    One more benefit to flying private (other than the fact it’s not Alaska Airlines) is it’s a lot less stressful, reducing “cognitive load,” says Seema Khosla, MD, FCCP, FAASM, medical director at the North Dakota Center for Sleep.

    When you go commercial, “you have to get through security, and then you think: ‘I can’t forget that I put my bag in the overhead bin,’” Dr. Khosla says. “You have to worry about making your connection. By flying private, you’re eliminating that mental load.” That can translate into sleeping better when you need to drift off – whether it’s on the plane or once you’re at your destination – because you don’t have as many “cognitive arousals,” she says, so you won’t find yourself feeling tired yet somehow also wired from the stress.

    Case in point: while Peter says he tends to feel a little bedraggled post-commercial air travel, even when he flies Business, he’s always felt “pretty refreshed” after private travel.

    All that withstanding, there are at least two factors that private air travel may not be able to totally solve for regarding jet lag. One is turbulence. “Smaller planes tend to be more susceptible to turbulence compared to a commercial jet, and if she’s sleeping on the plane, that’s gonna wake her up,” Dr. Gradisar notes. With that said, Peter adds that private jets can actually fly higher than commercial aircrafts, and this helps them avoid most of that dreaded turbulence. But, as we noted, TS may not even want to sleep on the plane – so this point may be a wash.

    The second thing private-jet-level-wealth can’t change is our sleep tendencies, which can make jet lag more or less manageable, according to Dr. Gradisar – and the fact that Swift is a known night owl may be an issue.

    “If she’s going Eastward to Las Vegas, that’s actually going in the opposite direction that her body wants to move if she’s a night owl,” Dr. Gradisar says. “But, the fact that she’s got the jet, and she’s only just arrived in Japan from the Grammys – she should be fine.”

    Can I Bring the Private Lifestyle Into Economy?

    We can’t (and we shouldn’t) all fly private. But there are a few ways to bring the ethos of private travel to the back of the plane with you, the sleep experts tell me. Dr. Khosla recommends, for one, staying hydrated, which will help you sleep better both on and after the flight. She adds having a good neck pillow helps too (a nudge I sorely need).

    Dr. Gradisar says that if one big benefit of flying private is fewer disturbances, noise-canceling headphones and a sleep mask can mimic that magic.

    You can also help yourself by carving out some time a few weeks before your trip to figure out what the time changes will look like and to see if you can prepare your body so it’s less shocked by them, Dr. Khosla says.

    She says that a good mini analogue for time change during travel is Daylight Savings Time. When you lose or gain an hour, you (and your pets or kids) might still be hungry at around 6 p.m. if that’s when you usually have dinner – even if it’s technically 5 p.m. post-clocks-change. But moving meal time back or forward by about 10 minutes a day in the week leading up to the change can make things easier. “I did this with my fish and I did it when my kids were little,” she says. And this strategy can be applied to time zone changes.

    Like Taylor, a clear mastermind, “you have to have a plan,” Dr. Khosla says.

    So, Will Taylor Be Jet-Lagged at the Super Bowl?

    This entire story is one of a hypothetical nature, and we know what happens when you assume where Taylor Alison Swift is concerned (as we most recently learned at the Grammys). We don’t know for sure when or how or even if Taylor will travel to the Super Bowl. We also can’t say if she has someone who helps her craft a sleep-and-wake schedule to best support her circadian rhythm, like many athletes do. Or if she’s just forgoing sleep altogether as she prepares to juggle the launch of “The Tortured Poets Department,” the sending of cease-and-desist letters to college students, and a relationship. In fact, we’re not 100 percent sure she’s not superhuman, as I’ve always suspected. She might not even need sleep.

    So . . . will she be jet-lagged?

    Maybe!

    But being rich and having access to private jets will probably help.

    Caltrans issued a traffic advisory Thursday, announcing that there would be multiple freeway offramp closures in San Francisco Sunday night after the end of Super Bowl LVIII between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

    The Caltrans plan with the California Highway Patrol appears aimed at discouraging people from coming into San Francisco to celebrate in the event of a 49ers victory that would mark the team’s first Super Bowl win in almost three decades. Officials took similar action on the night of the NFC Championship Game almost two weeks ago.

    The closures are scheduled for multiple offramps along the U.S. 101 and I-280 corridor in San Francisco the evening of Sunday, Feb. 11.  Caltrans and CHP are assisting the San Francisco Police Department with the closures of off-ramps tentatively scheduled to start at 7 p.m. that will continue until midnight.

    The freeway exits scheduled to be closed are as follows:

    • US-101 Southbound, Cesar Chavez St.  off-ramp
    • US-101 Northbound, Cesar Chavez St. off-ramp
    • US-101 Northbound, Mission St./Duboce St. off-ramp
    • I-280 Northbound, San Jose Ave off-ramp
    • I-280 Northbound, Geneva Ave off-ramp
    • I-280 Southbound, Geneva Ave off-ramp

    “These ramp closures in San Francisco are necessary to enhance public safety due to an anticipated increase traffic and pedestrian congestion during the National Football League game scheduled for Sunday afternoon,” the statement said.

    Muni also issued an advisory regarding bus service in the the Mission during and after the game.

    Starting at 5 p.m., Muni bus service will avoid using Mission Street, 24th Street and 16th Street in the Mission District, the SFMTA said. That will continue until streets are clear.

    The following Muni routes will be re-routed:

    • 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid and 49 Van Ness/Mission will use Guerrero Street from 15th to Cesar Chavez streets.
    • 12 Folsom and 27 Bryant will use Potrero Street between 22nd and Cesar Chavez streets.
    • 22 Folsom, 33 Ashbury/18th Street and 55 Dogpatch will use 14th and 15th streets between Guerrero Street and South Van Ness Avenue.
    • 48 Quintara/24th Street and 67 Bernal Heights will use Cesar Chavez Street instead of 24th Street between Potrero and Valencia streets.

    On Friday, San Francisco police confirmed there would be “traffic closures in the Mission District” but did not specify which streets would be shut down or when the closures would take place. When the 49ers beat the Detroit Lions in NFC Championship Game on Jan. 28, bot Mission Street and 24th Street were closed for a period of time. 

    “Officers will have a visible presence throughout the city before, during, and after the game with safety as our priority,” police said in the released statement. “The SFPD will not tolerate violence, property destruction, or other criminal activity.”

    The statement also encouraged those participating in Super Bowl festivities “to do so respectfully and responsibly” and to avoid driving while intoxicated.

    Authorities used a similar tactic when the Golden State Warriors beat the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA finals, closing I-80 exits to keep Warriors fans from swarming the area around the Chase Center after the team’s Game 6 win.

    NEW YORK (AP) — Big name advertisers will be pulling out all the stops on Super Bowl Sunday — enlisting high-profile actors, investing in dazzling special effects and, they hope, going for laughs as they seek to win over viewers during game breaks.

    In an increasingly fractured and polarized media environment — and with fewer people watching live TV — the Super Bowl is an anomaly. The big game’s viewership has actually increased, with a record 115.1 million people tuning in last year.

    So marketers will use the game on Sunday, which will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+, to draw attention to new products, brand extensions and their marketing message as they again vie for the eyes of more than 100 million expected viewers.

    Almost as an escape from the divisive U.S. presidential election and conflicts deepening around the world, most Super Bowl advertisers appear to be doubling down on flights of fantasy or light humor, often with a dose of nostalgia and a lot of mini-reunions of TV characters.

    “Serious is out,” said Kimberly Whitler, marketing professor at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. “Marketers have figured out entertainment, enjoyment and escapism is the name of the ad game.”

    Many Super Bowl commercials have already been released. Here’s what we know heading into this year’s big game.

    TV show mini reunions

    Perhaps taking a cue from the success of last year’s PopCorners ad that featured a reunion of “Breaking Bad” actors stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, this year there’s a slew of mini TV show reunions in ads.

    T-Mobile, which has been reuniting Scrubs co-stars in Super Bowl ads since 2022, teams up Zach Braff and Donald Faison to sing a version of “Flashdance…What a Feeling,” with Jason Momoa — along with a cameo by Jennifer Beals.

    In an ad stuffed with celebrity cameos — including “Judge Judy” Judy Sheindlin — e.l.f. cosmetics reunited “Suits” stars Gina Torres, Rick Hoffman and Sarah Rafferty in a courtroom spoof.

    NBC sitcoms have quite a few reunion moments during the game. In an Uber Eats ad, which shows people forgetting things so they remember Uber Eats can deliver a wide variety of items, Jennifer Anniston seemingly forgets she ever worked with her “Friends” co-star David Schwimmer.

    In an ad for Mtn Dew Baja Blast, Aubrey Plaza says she can have a ‘Blast’ doing anything, including reuniting with her “Parks and Rec” boss Nick Offerman as they fly on dragons.

    And in an ad for Booking.com, Tina Fey hires body doubles to stay at different lodging because she has so many options on the site, including her “30 Rock” co-stars Jane Krakowski and Jack McBrayer.

    Bringing well-known TV show characters together can help connect to the audience, said Northwestern University marketing professor Tim Calkins.

    “A younger, more on-trend figure might be more exciting, but could lack the awareness of these well-established characters,” he said. “Surprise is a key element of Super Bowl advertising, so unexpected reunions can work well.”

    Nostalgia, light hijinks

    Humor and a touch of nostalgia can be found in many ads. Molson Coors ‘ ad brings back their “Chill Train” that last appeared in advertisements nearly two decades ago, in 2005. A tongue-in-cheek ad shows the train crashing into a football watching party to bring partiers Coors Light. LL Cool J turns out to be the conductor.

    For Sofia Colucci, chief marketing officer for Molson Coors, which is advertising for the second year after Anheuser-Busch ended its decades long exclusive sponsorship of the game, the Super Bowl is a unique venue to reach existing customers and attract new ones.

    “One of the things we’re really trying to be thoughtful about is making sure that we are retaining and protecting our core drinkers at the same time attracting new drinkers,” she said. “The Super Bowl is a huge stage where you do have that opportunity to talk widely to those audiences.”

    In another hijink-filled ad, Doritos introduces its new Dinamita chips — the 24th year Doritos is advertising in the Super Bowl — by depicting two grandmotherly women in a store with actress Jenna Ortega. They reveal their action-prowess by taking off to pursue “Top Gun: Maverick” actor Danny Ramirez who grabbed the last bag of chips from a store shelf.

    Frito-Lay North America CMO Brett O’Brien says Dinamitas is aiming to reach a “multicultural young audience” aged 16 to 24.

    Celebrities abound

    There are always tons of celebrities in ads, and the star power seems to go up and up every year.

    “It’s celebrity on steroids right now,” Virginia Commonwealth University Brandcenter’s Jessica D. Collins said. While that is not necessarily new or surprising for the Super Bowl, she added, “it’s just going to be so heightened this year.”

    That means big names like Arnold Schwarzenneger starring in a State Farm ad, Ice Spice making an appearance for Starry, Christopher Walken facing imitations of himself for BMW, and Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner Usher showing up in an Uber Eats’ spot.

    Many ads have stuffed multiple celebrities in ads. And Paramount+ touts a star-filled lineup, including Drew Barrymore, Sir Patrick Stewart and Creed.

    Squarespace also hired a big name for behind the camera with Martin Scorcese directing his first Super Bowl ad for the domain hosting site.

    While star-power is exciting, it’s always possible to overdo it. Advertisers can risk viewers remembering what stars they saw in a commercial but not the brand name, University of Minnesota associate professor of marketing Linli Xu notes.

    One organic way advertisers can pull off celebrity appearances is to choose a featured star that already has a connection to the brand, Collins said, or tap into a recent pop culture moment.

    “A lot of times you’ll see a celebrity just show up and you’re like, ‘That person would have never used that product. Why are they there?’” she said.

    Some serious moments

    Of course, this year’s Super Bowl commercials won’t all be laughs.

    Robert Kraft’s Foundation to Combat Antisemitism has said it will run an ad featuring Martin Luther King Jr.’s speechwriter Dr. Clarence B. Jones. Dove’s ad focuses on the fact that low body-confidence leads to girls quitting sports. And Google’s heartstring-pulling ad follows a blind man as he uses “Guided Frame” — Google’s A.I.-powered accessibility feature for the Pixel camera that uses a combination of audio cues, high-contrast animations and tactile vibrations — to take pictures of the people and places in his life.

    Surprises

    As always, there will still be some game day surprises. Some advertisers such as Amazon have stayed mum on any plans. Upstart e-commerce site Temu has reportedly bought several ads. In a presidential election year, it’s possible we might see a candidate ad. And while there have been no indications of such, many wonder if advertisers will capitalize on this year’s Taylor Swift buzz in some way.

    Regardless of whether or not she makes her way into the commercial-side of the big game, marketers say advertisers are taking note of the “Taylor Swift effect” and trying to reach everyone, not just sports fans.

    “We have people that have never watched Football a day in their life now watching the entire game — not just for the ads, but for the game itself and for the celebrity sightings,” Collins said.

    In my mind, you shouldn’t need a crash course in football to participate in all the Super Bowl fanfare. Traditionally, the Super Bowl means fantasy football teams and some serious betting, which is a lot harder to get in on – let alone win – when you don’t know the first thing about football.     Super Bowl 2024 is setting the stage not just for a showdown between top NFL teams, but also for a major environmental milestone. This year, the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will host a Super Bowl powered entirely by renewable energy — a first in the history of the event.

    The seemingly desolate area of the Nevada desert is the source of the green energy used to power the game. 

    A vast solar farm with over 621,000 panels shimmers like a mirage but with the capability to power close to 60,000 residential customers — or one very big stadium.

    The Las Vegas Raiders, which call Allegiant Stadium home, have entered into a 25-year agreement to buy power from this new solar installation owned by NV Energy.

    CEO Doug Cannon said that the solar installation would supply more than 10 megawatts of power for the Super Bowl. This amount of energy is roughly equivalent to the consumption of 46,000 homes.

    Sustainability was front of mind as the stadium was being constructed, according to Raiders President Sandra Douglass Morgan.

    The stadium’s roof is made of a sustainable plastic material that allows in about 10% of daylight but blocks all solar heat, so it takes less energy to cool the building. The grass field is moved outdoors on a rail system to get natural sunlight rather than using energy-intensive growing lights. And everything from grass clippings to food scraps and cigarette butts are composted or converted into other forms of energy.

    “When you come to a game you may be thinking about just focusing on the game but when they hear that and know that we’re being conscious of our environmental footprint, hopefully that guest will leave and have that same mindset when they go back home,” said Morgan.

    The Super Bowl’s green energy push was highlighted during a visit from U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, who inspected the stadium’s main electrical entry room.

    “People sometimes get nervous about renewable power because they’re not sure if it’s going to be reliable. The fact that renewable power can power a facility like this reliably should speak volumes about what could happen in other communities,” Granholm said.

    The solar farm not only powers the current needs but also houses massive batteries to store renewable energy, ensuring a five-hour power supply even when the sun isn’t shining. This technology is seen as a key component in transitioning the U.S. power grid toward 100% clean electricity by 2035, a goal set by President Biden.

    Despite the focus on environmental sustainability, the Super Bowl’s entertainment, including a halftime show featuring performer Usher, will not be compromised.

    “We have enough power for Usher and all of his lights and all the fanfare that’ll be there,” said Cannon.

    For just over half of the country, it doesn’t matter who wins the 2024 Super Bowl, and this group is more interested in the parties and the commercials than the game itself. Which team wins matters more to football fans.

    And for some, a little betting is part of the fun. About one in five U.S. adults say they are at least somewhat likely to wager some money on this year’s Super Bowl. And football fans are more than four times as likely as non-fans to say they’ll do so.

    After the game, the parties and the ads, some might want a day off. About a third of football fans — particularly younger fans — would like the day after the Super Bowl to be a federal holiday.

    This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 1,791 U.S. adult residents interviewed between January 29-February 2, 2024. The sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, and education based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as past vote. The margin of error is ±3.1 points.
