Child wounded at Kansas City Chiefs parade shooting says incident has left him traumatized

Kansas City, Missouri — Among those wounded in the shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade was 10-year-old Samuel Arellano, who had attended with his grandfather and worn his jersey of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Arellano on Friday showed CBS News where he was shot, near his upper ribcage.

A woman was killed in Wednesday’s shooting and 22 others were wounded, nearly half of whom were children.

Arellano is now recovering at home, but the memories are still fresh.

“I was just crying a lot…I was terrified, I was traumatized,” Arellano said.

Arellano disclosed he has since had trouble sleeping.

“Like if I would go to sleep, I would get nightmares, flashbacks,” Arellano said.

Two juveniles arrested in connection with the shooting are facing gun-related and resisting arrest charges. Future hearings could determine if they will be tried as adults, with more serious charges expected. Investigators believe a dispute between several people led to the gunfire, Kansas City, Missouri, Police Chief Stacey Graves said Thursday.

A vigil was held Thursday night for 43-year-old Lisa Lopez-Galvan — the mother of two and local radio DJ who was killed. Early Friday, pop star Taylor Swift, girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, donated $100,000 to a GoFundMe that was established for the Lopez-Galvan family.

Mahomes and his wife Brittany visited two of the shooting victims, sisters ages 8 and 10, who remain hospitalized at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. In total, 11 children ages 6 to 15 were treated for injuries from the shooting at Children’s Mercy, the hospital said.

Those children, like Arellano, are not just dealing with the trauma, but also a loss of innocence. Arellano said he would be unwilling to attend another large parade because “you never know what can happen.”

A GoFundMe has also been created for the family of Arellano.

After winning Super Bowl LVIII, not to mention attracting feverish interest in his romantic relationship with Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce is setting his sights on Hollywood.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end is making his foray into the movie business as executive producer on “My Dead Friend Zoe,” an independent film set to premiere at the South by Southwest film festival in Austin, Texas, next month, Variety reported.

The outlet described the film as a “low-budget dark comedy” starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Natalie Morales, Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman, which cost less than $10 million to make. Representatives for Kelce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While Kelce’s involvement marks the football star’s debut as a producer, the film is also the first project to be financed using so-called green energy tax credits. As part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, the Biden administration offered tax credits to households and companies that invest in efficient energy alternatives. The credits can also be bought and sold.

Travis Kelce bought Taylor Swift’s TNT bracelet from Wove jewelry in Lancaster, Pa.

    04:44

Radiant Media Studios, which is helping produce “My Dead Friend Zoe,” said on its website that the company “helps bring carbon negative media projects to life by pairing investments in renewable energy development with investments in climate friendly media professional.”

The idea is that investors can use the credits to defray the risk of putting money into independent films, which are notoriously risky.

Kelce’s producing partners on the picture include green energy entrepreneur Mike Field and producer Ray Maiello, head of Radiant Media Studios, according to Variety. Field funded the film with proceeds from his sale of surplus tax credits, according to the report.

  • Blake Lively’s Super Bowl Jewelry Cost HOW MUCH?! – Perez Hilton

Blake Lively’s Super Bowl Jewelry Cost HOW MUCH?! – Perez Hilton

    Best believe she’s Bejeweled!

As we’ve been reporting on all the fun surrounding the Super Bowl and Taylor Swift‘s A-list squad, Blake Lively‘s AH-Mazing outfit didn’t go unnoticed by fans! The 36-year-old showed up to the big game alongside her BFF Tay and rapper Ice Spice to cheer on Travis Kelce. She came dressed to the nines with a gorg curly hair look and a super fun Adidas tracksuit in Kansas City Chiefs red — all paired together with some chunky gold jewelry that sparkled under the VIP suite lights.

The golden dazzlers weren’t just costume gems, though! Apparently Ryan Reynolds‘ wife dropped some SERIOUS dough on her bangle bracelets, thick chain necklace, and dangly earrings!!

Related: Taylor’s Favorite Number Was All Over The Super Bowl!

At Allegiant Stadium, per Page Six, the actress and momma of four had a number of Tiffany and Elsa Peretti pieces on her. They included a silver chainlink necklace valued at $18,500, a gold graduated link necklace valued at $62,000, and a diamond pavé necklace worth the most at a whopping $78,000. That’s nearly $159,000 ON HER NECK ALONE!

Moving to her wrists, the Gossip Girl alum wore 14 different bracelets — with the cheapest one being well over a thousand dollars! She had on two link bracelets of the same design in different styles for $12,500 and $26,000 respectively, as well as a series of an Elsa Peretti cuff that goes for $12,300 and a doughnut bangle for $29,000. She stacked up two diamond and white gold bangles for $56,000 in total.

And if you thought she was done, you thought wrong! Her accessories continued with two Tiffany bangles valued at $7,500 and $7,800 — and she tacked on two diamond versions of those bangles as well for $27,000 and $39,000! Taking a break from all the gold jewels, Blake decided to mix in some silver with a $42,000 lock bangle, a half pavé white gold bangle for $17,000, and another Elsa Peretti knot bangle covered in diamonds which retails for $54,000.

The least expensive wrist accessory of the night was valued at $1,825 — being a simple sterling silver bangle — leaving the total value of her wrists alone at $304,925. WILD!!

Blake’s two sets of earrings were a simple pair of Tiffany Solitaire diamonds which retail for $1,650 and some Elsa Peretti snake danglers valued at around $4,000 — but to Swifties, that subtle nod to the forthcoming rerecording of Reputation (Taylor’s Version) is priceless! Take all that together and The Shallows star wore $469,075 worth of jewelry on her person at the game. Nearly half a MILLION bucks worth of accessories all paired with a tracksuit! Iconic!

One party city to another: Vegas completes Super Bowl handoff to New Orleans

LAS VEGAS – The business of Super Bowl LVIII ended with the official handoff from Las Vegas, to New Orleans on Monday morning inside of the Mandalay Bay. Las Vegas proved to be an exceptional host city. Buoyed by decades of hosting major conferences and big sporting events, the city’s host committee begged NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to forgo the rotation of cities and put another Super Bowl back in Vegas quickly.

Las Vegas was a no-brainer to be a host once the home of the Raiders, Allegiant Stadium, would be open by 2020. Plus, the city has more than 150,000 hotel rooms. Lastly, Vegas’s ability to host high level events in nightclubs, convention halls and event spaces while allowing the NFL to take over the city’s core was a plus.

“Thank you to the NFL for believing in Las Vegas and thank you to the Las Vegas Super Bowl host committee for making this historic Super Bowl possible,” said Nevada Governor Jay Lombardo. “And I will take this opportunity to use the Governor’s discretion to ask the commissioner to forgo their rotational plans for the Super Bowl and maybe get it here sooner than later.”

  • Super PAC supporting RFK Jr. airs $7 million ad during Super Bowl

Super PAC supporting RFK Jr. airs $7 million ad during Super Bowl

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s super PAC, American Values 2024, aired a 30-second ad about the independent candidate’s presidential campaign during Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday.

The ad highlighted images of the 70-year-old candidate in a vintage look, while using slogans, clips and a jingle that leaned into the legacy of his uncle, former President John F. Kennedy.

But some members of Kennedy’s family complained about his use of family images. Kennedy’s cousin, Bobby Shriver, the son of Kennedy’s aunt Eunice Kennedy Shriver, wrote on X, “My cousin’s Super Bowl ad used our uncle’s faces- and my Mother’s. She would be appalled by his deadly health care views. Respect for science, vaccines, & health care equity were in her DNA. She strongly supported my health care work at @ONECampaign & @RED which he opposes.”

And Bobby Shriver’s brother, Mark Shriver also commented, saying, “I agree with my brother @bobbyshriver simple as that.”

Kennedy apologized to his family on social media, saying he is “sorry if the Super Bowl advertisement caused anyone in my family pain.”

“The ad was created and aired by the American Values Super PAC without any involvement or approval from my campaign. FEC rules prohibit Super PACs from consulting with me or my staff,” said Kennedy’s post. “I love you all. God bless you.”

However, the ad remained pinned to the top of Kennedy’s X page on Monday morning and Kennedy’s press secretary, Stefanie Spear, said in a separate statement to CBS News that “we are pleasantly surprised and grateful to the American Values PAC for running an ad during the Super Bowl where more han 100 million Americans got to see that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is running as an independent candidate for President of the United States.”

Super PAC co-founder Tony Lyons confirmed to CBS News that the Super Bowl ad cost $7 million

“The panicked DC power brokers are working overtime to keep Kennedy off the ballot because they know he can and will end their culture of greed and corruption. They offer us soaring inflation, forever wars, and chronic disease,” Lyons said in a statement sent to CBS News.

As of now, Kennedy has only officially qualified for the ballot in Utah. According to the campaign, he met the signature threshold on Jan. 23, but the campaign is still working on paperwork.

On Friday, the Democratic National Committee filed an FEC filing against Kennedy’s campaign and his super PAC, claiming the two are colluding to get Kennedy on the ballot.

“It’s fitting that the first national ad promoting Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s candidacy was bought and paid for by Donald Trump’s largest donor this cycle. RFK Jr. is nothing more than a Trump stalking horse in this race,” DNC spokesperson Alex Floyd said in a statement following the ad.

“Like his uncle and his father, Kennedy is a corruption-fighter, and it’s no wonder the DNC is trying every old trick and inventing new tricks to stop him. The public sees through it all and won’t stand for it,” Lyons said Sunday.

Political strategist Robert Shrum, a speechwriter and consultant for Kennedy’s uncle, the late former Sen. Ted Kennedy, said on social media, “This RFK Jr. Super Bowl ad is a straight out plagiarism of JFK ad from 1960. What a fraud – and to quote Lloyd Bentsen with a slight amendment, ‘Bobby, you’re no John Kennedy.’ Instead you are a Trump ally.”

Several of Kennedy’s family members had aleady condemned his independent bid for the presidency. In October 2023, when he announced he was going to run as an independent, four of his siblings issued a statement calling his decision “dangerous to the country.”

  • A Super Bowl That Went From Dud to Dynamite

A Super Bowl That Went From Dud to Dynamite

Photo: Timothy A. Clary/AFP via Getty Images

So many great moments in sports history, moments that seem like destiny in retrospect, were impossible to foresee or even necessarily understand while they were happening. The Falcons’ blowing a 28-3 lead to the Patriots was an all-time Super Bowl moment, but before it went down, the only thing on everyone’s minds was “all right, this game is over, I can go to bed early tonight.” (This included the President at the time.) You never know when something incredible is going to happen.

The flip side of that is that you never know when something incredible isn’t going to happen. And for most of Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, nothing incredible happened. For about two and a half hours, it was arguably the dullest Super Bowl in recent memory. But the game was still close, and you can never go to bed when the game is still close, or you might regret it the next morning — like anyone who missed the end of this one will, because, wouldn’t you know it, something incredible ended up happening.

The Kansas City Chiefs ended up beating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, 25-22, on a touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to Mecole Hardeman, a player whose fumble against the Bills earlier in the playoffs nearly ended his team’s season. It was only the second overtime game in Super Bowl history — the first being the aforementioned Patriots-Falcons game seven years ago. This one didn’t have the epic swings of that classic (still the most insane Super Bowl I’ve ever seen), but the thing about football is that a great ending can make up for two and a half  hours of muck.

And there was a lot of muck. This Super Bowl had seemed to be set up for greatness: It featured two of the league’s signature franchises, the five-time champion 49ers and the defending champion Chiefs. It starred the 49ers’ Brock Purdy, a more unlikely Super Bowl quarterback underdog story than Tom Brady ever was, and the Chiefs’ Mahomes and Travis Kelce, by far the two most famous players in the NFL. The pregame hype about whether Kelce’s girlfriend — who is perhaps better known for other endeavors — would arrive from a concert in Japan in time for kickoff rivaled the hype for the game itself. The Super Bowl was even in Las Vegas. Epic!

But for most of the night, the two best teams in football were very much not at their best, and the sport, on its biggest night, looked a lot uglier and sloppier than usual. There were penalties and turnovers and blocked kicks and muffed punts and mental mistakes, and no points at all until midway through the second quarter.

For a while, the most exciting moment of the night was a 49ers trick play that was well-conceived and well-executed, but not all that aesthetically pleasing (let alone dramatic). Purdy, the grand underdog story, had a perfectly dull, uninspired, vanilla wafer of a game, as is his wont. (He’s great, but no kid is ever going to pretend to be Brock Purdy in their backyard.) Mahomes, the anointed Next Brady, had perhaps his worst game of the season, thanks in large part to the relentless 49ers defense. Jake Moody and Harrison Butker kicked the two longest field goals in Super Bowl history. (Yawn.)

Oh, and about that couple: The star tight end (and aforementioned boyfriend) only had one showcase moment, and it was when he was so furious at his 65-year-old coach he nearly knocked him over. And — I am sorry to be the one to say this, but I don’t cover the Super Bowl in person every year not to report the news — but when Swift was shown on the jumbotron at Allegiant Stadium, she was undeniably, unabashedly booed by the vast majority of the fans in the stands. True, 49ers fans outnumbered Chiefs fans by a significant amount, and the booing happened before Swift impressively chugged a beer in one swig (the sort of skill that does tend to sway your average football fan), but still: Taylor Swift being jeered by 40,000 people is probably not what the NFL had in mind for the evening.

And then,in the last half of the fourth quarter, suddenly everything came together, turning a stuttering, scattershot game taut. Purdy hit Jauan Jennings — who had thrown for the aforementioned trick play touchdown early and was this close to becoming the least-likely Super Bowl MVP in history — for a touchdown with 6:06 remaining. The Chiefs then ominously blocked the Niners’ extra point, leaving their deficit at only three. The two teams traded field goals the rest of the quarter, sending it into overtime, where the 49ers won the coin toss and, curiously, chose to take the ball first. Under the new NFL overtime rules, both teams are guaranteed to get the ball at least in overtime, and, theoretically, you’d want to get it second so that you’d know how much the other team scored first. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan’s logic made some sense: If both teams were to score the same number on their first two possessions in overtime, that would give the 49ers the ball on the third and final possession, needing only a field goal to win. But it felt Shanahan outsmarted himself. After San Francisco was (barely) held to a field goal, the Chiefs drove down for the winning touchdown — ending the 49ers’ season and surely leaving Shanahan wondering what if.

As far as the NFL was concerned, this was exactly the right ending, no matter what had preceded it. The Chiefs’ second title in a row makes them the first team to repeat since the Patriots in 2004-05. It keeps Mahomes (increasingly the face of the league) on a Tom Brady-type pace, with his third ring and his second Super Bowl MVP. On the Jumbotron, as the Lombardi Trophy was awarded, Kelce led Chiefs fans in the stands in a rousing, if not particularly melodic, rendition of “Fight For Your Right to Party” as his megastar girlfriend looked on and smiled. No one booed when they saw her this time: Those 49ers fans had long left. The rest of us were pretty pleased we’d stuck around.

  • Keeler: Kyle Shanahan ignored Christian McCaffrey in third quarter. And it cost him Super Bowl LVIII.

Keeler: Kyle Shanahan ignored Christian McCaffrey in third quarter. And it cost him Super Bowl LVIII.

Cherry Creek did Valor Christian dirty. A game that should’ve been in Christian McCaffrey’s hands in the third quarter wound up in Patrick Mahomes’ mitts during overtime.

Oh, there will be other Super Bowls for Kyle Shanahan, pride of Cherry Creek, son of Broncos icon Mike Shanahan. But if Chiefs 25, 49ers 22 stings a little more on Monday in Broncos Country, it’s because Little Shanny waited too stinking long to change course. It’s because the AFC’s newest dynasty feels as if it’s riding a wave of Front Range tears.

And let’s be frank: It’s because McCaffrey, the 49ers star and former Valor bell cow, touched the ball 14 times in the first half and just three times in the third quarter, a stretch that helped Mahomes and Patriots West get up off the mat.

It wasn’t the same script as the one that burned young Shanahan as badly as when he was offensive coordinator with the Falcons — a 28-3 Super Bowl lead turned, inexplicably, into another Tom Brady triumph.

But the beats felt eerily close. Little Shanny responded to a touchdown cushion and a Mahomes interception coming out of halftime with six straight pass plays … which amassed negative-2 net yards. For a painful, fleeting moment, Kyle forgot he had the best tailback in the free world. He let Mahomes hang around too long.

We already know how much the football gods love No. 15. Why tease or tempt them? Look at Kansas City’s postseason path. Miami at home? Minus-27 wind chill. Buffalo on the road? Wide right. Baltimore on the road? Lamar Jackson forgot he was Lamar and tied himself up in knots trying to be Mahomes.

With 2:32 left in the third stanza, those gods finally struck. A Chiefs punt scraped the heel of Niners special-teamer Darrell Luter Jr. and eventually was recovered by KC’s Jaylen Watson at the San Fran 16.

Never one to refuse a gift, Mahomes pounced on the very next play, finding a wide-open Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the front of the end zone for an easy score and the Chiefs’ first lead of the evening, 12-10.

San Fran, meanwhile, had opened with stanza with the rock at the KC 44, thanks to a clutch pick. Nothing. Shanahan got it back at the Niners 36. Still nada.

This after Little Shanny and the Niners had ceded the halftime stage to Usher nursing a 10-3 lead — a scoreline that flattered the defending champs.

Midway through the second quarter, the Chiefs’ ball of championship steel wool appeared to be unraveling, one strand at a time. CBS cameras showed Travis Kelce running over to coach Andy Reid, like a man possessed, and shoving his longtime coach in his side, raging and barking as if Captain Cheeseburger had just name-dropped one of Taylor Swift’s ex-paramours.

Despite both teams’ sloppy starts, Shanahan was at least wise enough not to forget what he had in the backfield — McCaffrey touched the ball 14 times those first two quarters, nine of them carries.

But the sweetest came on what looked, at first, like a broken play salvaged by speed and insanity. Slowed down, though, it became apparent that The Son of The Mastermind is indeed a chip off the old zone block.

With 4:23 left until halftime, Niners wideout Jauan Jennings caught a lateral in the left flat, eyes upfield. Only he shifted quickly to his right, flicking a pass, this one a wounded duck, in the direction of McCaffrey. The Denver native had to spring to snare the ball in mid-flight, building up a head of steam the way Popeye does after wolfing down a can of spinach.

Valor Christian’s finest, sure enough, proved strong to the finish. With at least two Niners blockers obstructing traffic in the right flat, McCaffrey turned what looked like sheer insanity into a 21-yard touchdown sprint and a 9-0 cushion.

Kyle learned his lessons well. But the son of Mike, who coached the Broncos to back-to-back championships, also knew when to fold ’em on this stage. When to hold ’em. When to walk away. And, most importantly, when to run.

  • Super Bowl 2024 live updates of Chiefs vs. 49ers

Super Bowl 2024 live updates of Chiefs vs. 49ers

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to become the first back-to-back Super Bowl champion in two decades when they take on the San Francisco 49ers today in Las Vegas.

Super Bowl LVIII is a rematch of Super Bowl LIV in 2020, when the Chiefs and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes beat the Niners 31-20 to bring Kansas City its first Super Bowl in a half-century.

The two head coaches who patrolled the sidelines four years ago are still at the helm, but their teams come into Sunday with vastly different narratives. Chiefs coach Andy Reid has a 3-0 record against the Niners’ Kyle Shanahan — who has earned a reputation as a quality regular season coach who struggles with game management in the playoffs.

If Shanahan is going to finally defeat Reid, he will need to find a way to slow down Mahomes and his favorite target, tight end Travis Kelce, the two of whom made history in the AFC title game against the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago by connecting on their 16th postseason passing touchdown, the most ever playoff touchdowns by a quarterback-receiver duo.

A win Sunday would give the Chiefs their third Super Bowl in five years, vaulting them into NFL dynasty status and putting Mahomes into rarified air as one of only three quarterbacks ever to win three Super Bowls before the age of 30, the other two being Tom Brady and Troy Aikman.

When asked this past week about the possibility of one day tying or surpassing Brady’s seven Super Bowl wins, the 28-year-old Mahomes deflected, saying he’s “a long ways away still.”

“I mean, I’m not even close to halfway, so I haven’t put a lot of thought into it,” Mahomes said. “I mean, your goal is to be the best player that you can be. I know I’m blessed to be around a lot of great players around me. And so, right now, it’s doing whatever I can to beat a great 49ers team and try to get that third ring. And then if you ask me that question in 15 years, and I’ll see if I can get close to seven.”

The Niners, whose quarterback Brock Purdy was famously 2022’s Mr. Irrelevant — the last pick of that draft — are hoping to finally end their 29-year Super Bowl drought and win their first title since 1995.

“I know a couple of the guys that got drafted before me,” the 24-year-old Purdy told reporters in Las Vegas. “But I’ve never held a grudge or anything. I’m a believer that God has a plan for everybody, and I fell last for a reason.”

The Chiefs reached the Super Bowl the hard way, with back-to-back road playoff wins against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round and then the Ravens in the conference championship — the first time in his career Mahomes has been forced to play road playoff games.

The Chiefs and Niners both feature top-five defenses, according to Pro Football Reference. While outside of Kelce, Mahomes’ supporting cast has been weak, Purdy has one of the most talented and explosive skill-position groups in recent memory with running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, and tight end George Kittle.

But while the Niners earned a No. 1 seed and home-field advantage, they struggled mightily against seemingly inferior NFC competition in the playoffs despite their talent, barely eking out wins against the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round, and then the Detroit Lions in the NFC title game.

But maybe even bigger than the conversation surrounding what happens on the field Sunday will be the hype around football’s most famous couple, Kelce and pop superstar Taylor Swift.

Swift, who last weekend set a record with her fourth Album of the Year win at the Grammys, performed Saturday night in Tokyo as part of her Eras Tour, and fans had been hotly debating whether she would make it back to the U.S. in time to attend Sunday’s game.

Thanks to a 17-hour time difference between Tokyo and Vegas, she made it back to the U.S. with plenty of time to spare, arriving in Los Angeles Saturday afternoon on a private jet.

With parking spots for private jets at Vegas-area airports completely booked months in advance for Super Bowl weekend, Swift was likely to be driven from L.A. to Vegas for the big game.

Super Bowl LVIII will air on CBS and Nickelodeon and stream on Paramount+ on Feb. 11 from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.

Live updates from the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.

The eyes of the nation are on Las Vegas as the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the San Francisco 49ers.

Take a look at some big moments, excitement and headlines being made as the teams gear up to play.

McKinnon, Moore active for Chiefs, but Toney sits

Running back Jerick McKinnon and wide receiver Skyy Moore were active for the Kansas City Chiefs for the first time in nearly two months for their Super Bowl showdown with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

McKinnon and Moore, who both played a crucial role in the Chiefs’ win over the Eagles in the Super Bowl last year, have not played since Dec. 17 in New England. McKinnon had surgery for a core injury in early January and was considered questionable to play against the 49ers, while Moore spent a stint on injured reserve with a lingering knee injury.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who also had a TD against the Eagles, was not active on Sunday.

Taylor Swift greeted at Super Bowl by Roger Goodell, Jason Kelce

Taylor Swift’s arrival at Allegiant Stadium even drew the interest of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who visited her in a luxury suite before the game.

Goodell spoke glowingly Monday about the pop star’s effect on the NFL.

“Taylor is obviously a dynamo,” he said. “Everything she touches, there are people following. We count ourselves fortunate, and we welcome it.”

Kelce’s brother, Jason, hugged Swift in the suite, and Swift introduced him to Ice Spice. Jason Kelce plays for the Philadelphia Eagles but has fully supported his brother during the playoffs. The two faced each other in last year’s Super Bowl.

Kristin Juszczyk arrives in self-made style

Kristin Juszczyk arrived at the Super Bowl in a snazzy jacket that includes her husband Kyle’s 49ers jersey and his Harvard shield. Kyle is a fullback out of Harvard who plays for San Francisco.

Kristin has become a star after designing a coat worn by Taylor Swift that looked like a jersey of her boyfriend, Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce.

    Taylor Swift has arrived

Taylor Swift finished her epic trek from the Tokyo Dome to Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl on Sunday. She arrived with Blake Lively and a few others wearing a black top with black pants and a red jacket slung over her shoulder.

Swift is on hand to watch Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, whom she has been dating since the first couple of weeks of the season. She performed in Japan on Saturday night before a flight across nine time zones and the international date line to reach the U.S.

No mixed loyalty this year for Donna Kelce

The mother of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce arrived for the game wearing a jacket with “SUPER BOWL LVIII” and “MAMA KELCE” on the back. In last season’s Super Bowl, Travis Kelce’s Chiefs defeated his brother Jason Kelce’s team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Instead of a matchup between two brothers, the Kelce family is in the spotlight this year because of Travis’ relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. Donna Kelce has appeared in a suite alongside Swift this season.

49ers enter the Super Bowl as 2 ½-point favorites

The San Francisco 49ers are 2 ½-point favorites against the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of their Super Bowl matchup, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

The 49ers are -134 favorites to win the game, while the over/under sat at 46.5 points.

Despite being the underdog, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the favorite to win Super Bowl MVP at +150, followed by 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy at +210.

Jason Kelce ready to root on brother Travis, Chiefs

Travis Kelce played against Jason Kelce last year, when the Chiefs beat his big brothers’ Eagles in the Super Bowl in Arizona. But Jason was fully behind the Chiefs on Sunday, wearing red and yellow plaid overalls over a T-shirt that read, “Big Yeti,” his nickname for Travis.

The brothers host “New Heights,” one of the hottest podcasts in the country. And once the Eagles were knocked from the playoffs, Jason began following the Chiefs. He famously took off his shirt during a celebration in Buffalo, and he watched the Chiefs win the AFC title in Baltimore.

Reba arrives, set to perform national anthem

Reba McEntire walked into Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl about 3 1/2 hours before kickoff Sunday wearing a puffy, gray faux fur coat and holding hands with her partner, Rex Linn.

McEntire is due to perform the national anthem before the Kansas City Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of the Super Bowl four years ago in Miami. She will have a lot to live up to after Chris Stapleton’s performance last year in Arizona received high praise.

Some NFL fans pass on expensive tickets and just have ‘a good time’ in Vegas

Super Bowl ticket prices remain out of reach for many fans who made travel reservations months ago to come to Las Vegas this week, so they’ll likely be watching on TV like millions of others.

To buy tickets days before the game can be costly. This year they’re going for roughly $7,700 — though that is about $2,000 less than they were two weeks ago.

Carl Bray, a Cincinnati fan, booked his trip to the Super Bowl two months ago and came even though the Bengals didn’t make it.

“I don’t have tickets yet, but I got the hotel, flight, and I thought ‘Welp, if I lock into something, I’ll go,’” Bray said. “If not, I’ll just go to MGM or someplace and watch it.”

Patrick Mahomes looks ready for business in Super Bowl arrival

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes paid homage to the team that calls Allegiant Stadium home when he showed up for the Super Bowl on Sunday wearing a jet-black suit and silver tie that made him look like a fan of the AFC West-rival Las Vegas Raiders.

Mahomes appeared to be all business behind his black shades as he wheeled along his matching black Louis Vuitton luggage through the corridors of the stadium. He is trying to move into a tie for fourth behind Tom Brady, Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw by picking up his third Super Bowl ring.

Super Bowl gates open, fans arriving in Las Vegas

Gates to Allegiant Stadium opened just after 11 a.m. local time, unleashing a flood of fans in red. Five San Francisco 49ers fans were the first let through the gates.

“Woo!” They yelled. “First ones in! We’re the first ones!”

Tony and Susan Chiosso traveled to Las Vegas from the Bay Area to watch their first-ever Super Bowl and, they hope, witness their team defeat the Kansas City Chiefs.

They think their luck so far this morning is a good indicator of which team will come out on top.

“I’m only seeing good signs today,” Tony Chiosso said.

Will Taylor Swift make it to the big game in time? Intrepid flight trackers online seem to think so.

On social media, fans of Taylor Swift and aviation journalists believe they’ve identified Swift’s private jet, labeled “The Football Era.”

It arrived from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Los Angeles’ LAX airport just after 3:30 p.m. local time Saturday.

Video below: Get the Facts: Misinformation on Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce

Her transportation plans onward to Las Vegas, where her boyfriend, NFL star tight end Travis Kelce, will play in Sunday’s Super Bowl, have yet to be revealed.

Why will the Chiefs win the SuperBowl? Their vast experience

If the Chiefs beat the 49ers for their third Super Bowl title in four trips over the past five years, it will be for one simple reason: experience.

The Chiefs can lean on what they learned and endured over a dominant six-year run with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. In fact, when the Chiefs beat the 49ers in Miami for their first title during this run, San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and many others were still in college.

Video below: Chiefs embracing underdog role in playoffs, against 49ers in the Super Bowl

Throw in the fact that Chiefs coach Andy Reid will be in his fifth Super Bowl, the third most in NFL history, and has a chance to win a third ring, and the knowledge on the Kansas City sideline will be an advantage too big for the 49ers to overcome.

The 49ers had Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on the ropes four years ago in the Super Bowl before everything fell apart, leading to a 31-20 loss that still stings today.

The difference when the teams meet in the rematch on Sunday? This time, the 49ers will have a quarterback in Brock Purdy who is capable of making a big play down the stretch.

Video below: Super Bowl fan prediction from a 14-year-old with a history of perfect picks

Purdy has gone from “Mr. Irrelevant” as the final pick in the 2022 draft to the franchise quarterback who has elevated coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense in less than two years. He led the NFL in passer rating (113) and yards per attempt (9.6), with his ability to throw deep and scramble adding new wrinkles to the offense.

Purdy also has a far better group of playmakers than the one that surrounded Jimmy Garoppolo four years ago.

Video below: Brock Purdy’s high school coach: ‘Teachers, security guards, custodians … all loved him’

As long as they still have each other, they’re still going to go to every Super Bowl.

That’s the sentiment shared by three friends who say they are the final fans who can claim membership in the exclusive “never missed a Super Bowl” club. And they’re back again for number 58 — Super Bowl 58 — this year.

The three fans, all in their 80s, are Don Crisman of Maine, Gregory Eaton of Michigan and Tom Henschel, who splits time between Florida and Pennsylvania. The three are gathering this weekend in Las Vegas for the big game, and they’re hoping they can all make it to the sixtieth edition of the game two years from now.

Taylor Swift’s connections to sports go back to her early days performing the national anthem

Before Taylor Swift grew into a global superstar and the talk of this Super Bowl, she got her singing career started by performing the national anthem at sporting events as a young child and teenager.

She sang the anthem before 45,900 fans at Game 3 of the 2008 World Series. The U.S. Open. NASCAR. The World Series. Yes, even the Double-A Reading Phillies.

Swift was an unsigned artist who looked for any kind of break by belting out the song about the land of the free and the home of the brave in front of as many packed crowds as she could find.

For Native American activists, the Kansas City Chiefs have it all wrong

Dozens of Indigenous activists have traveled to Las Vegas to gather outside the Super Bowl and demand the Kansas City Chiefs change their name and ditch their logo and gametime rituals.

Rhonda LeValdo founded and leads a group called Not In Our Honor that is calling for the changes. The Acoma Pueblo journalist and faculty member at Haskell Indian Nations University has been in the Kansas City area for more than two decades.

Everyone hopes the Chiefs-49ers Super Bowl won’t come down to an officiating call

One of the biggest fears when it comes to football’s biggest games is that a high-profile officiating mistake will play a role in the result.

So the seven on-field officials will get plenty of screen time when the Kansas City Chiefs face the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

The referee in charge of the crew in black-and-white unforms will be Bill Vinovich. He was also the referee when the Chiefs beat the 49ers in the Super Bowl four years ago — and when the Rams beat the Saints in the 2019 NFC championship game after an infamous missed call.

Here’s what you can expect from Super Bowl commercials this Sunday

Advertisers will be pulling out all the stops on Super Bowl Sunday — enlisting the biggest actors, investing in the most dazzling special effects and, they hope, going for laughs as they seek to win over viewers.

Most companies appear to be doubling down on flights of fantasy or light humor, often with a dose of nostalgia and a lot of mini-reunions of TV characters.

Big names like Jennifer Anniston, Christopher Walken, Arnold Schwarzenneger, Ice Spice, Jenna Ortega, Lionel Messi, Tom Brady, “Judge Judy” Judy Sheindlin, Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner Usher and more will appear during game breaks. And as always, there will still be some gameday surprises.

The game. The ads. The music. The puppies. Here’s why millions are excited for Super Bowl Sunday

Millions of Americans will find something to be excited about when it comes to Super Bowl Sunday. That’s before even factoring in the influence of Taylor Swift.

Four in 10 U.S. adults are extremely or very excited for at least one part of the Super Bowl day’s festivities. That could be the game, commercials, halftime show or the Puppy Bowl, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

49ers All-Pro offensive tackle Trent Williams savors his first Super Bowl trip in his 14th season

Trent Williams’ accomplishments are already worthy of a Hall of Fame career with 11 Pro Bowl bids, three first-team All-Pro selections and near universal recognition as the best left tackle of his generation.

All that was missing for the San Francisco 49ers star was something he never envisioned would be possible as he spent the first decade of his career mired in the dysfunction and ineptitude in Washington.

Williams has gotten that missing piece with his first chance to play in the Super Bowl this week against Kansas City.

High school football gave hope after deadly Maui wildfire. Team captains will be at the Super Bowl

Captains of a Hawaii high school football team whose town was destroyed by a deadly wildfire are at the Super Bowl as guests of the NFL.

The four students and three of their coaches are serving as honorary coin toss captains before the game.

A little more than two months after the Aug. 8 fire, tickets for the Lahainaluna High School homecoming game sold out in minutes. That was an indication of how badly Lahaina residents needed a glimmer of hope amid a tragedy that claimed at least 100 lives.

  • What is the average NFL referee salary, and are refs paid more for the Super Bowl?

What is the average NFL referee salary, and are refs paid more for the Super Bowl?

It’s well known that the National Football League’s star athletes make tens of millions of dollars a year. NFL referee salaries, on the other hand, are more elusive. Certainly, they earn considerably less than the players, despite the tremendous amount of pressure they’re under to make game-deciding calls, that could influence the outcome of the 2024 Super Bowl.

Referee pay is governed by a collective bargaining agreement between the NFL Referees Association (NFLRA) — the union that represents them — and the NFL.

The latest contract, signed by both parties in September 2019, is effective through May 2026, but is not publicly available.

Previous agreements between the union and the league, however, provide a sense of how much the officials charged with adjudicating and enforcing the rules of the game earn for their work.

Not surprisingly, it pales in comparison to the players with whom they share the field.

How much do NFL referees make?

How much does an NFL referee make? In 2019, under the agreement that was to expire in May 2020, game officials earned an average salary of $205,000, according to a post on the latest NFL referee salary agreement from Football Zebras, a site focused on football referees. In 2011, under the preceding contract, officials earned $149,000, on average. That means they received a nearly 38% bump in pay from one contract to the next.

NFL referees typically officiate 19 games per season, including preseason matchups and clinics

Do NFL referees get paid more money for the Super Bowl?

A Super Bowl referee’s pay is supplementary to a regular season NFL football referee salary. Refs assigned to playoff games and the Super Bowl “are paid from a separate pool” on top of their regular salaries, according to the site.

NFLRA executive director Scott Green did not immediately respond to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment on the current contract between the union and the NFL.

The NFL also did not respond to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment on referee pay.

To be an NFL game official, candidates must have at least 10 years’ experience officiating football games, according to the league’s website. That should include at least five years refereeing “major college games.”

The NFL runs a referee development program, called the Mackie Development Program, that provides a pathway for college football refs to step up to the national league.

Program participants attend training camps, officiate NFL preseason games and, upon completion, move up to the NFL if they are deemed fit to officiate at the highest level of the sport.

More than 120 officials in black-and-white shirts are currently working as referees, umpires or judges in the NFL.

    49ers-Chiefs Super Bowl LVIII: Must-reads

Many tried to stop Christian McCaffrey during his Colorado high school days. Few could. “He did whatever he wanted”

One moment, Blake Nelson had the perfect angle to stop a bubble screen for a loss near the sideline. The next, he was laying on the turf, subject to the full Christian McCaffrey Experience. That’s just one tableau of many from McCaffrey’s storied prep days at Valor Christian from 2010 to ’13 when the dynamic running back and Colorado native was the centerpiece of four straight state title teams.
