Powered by a monstrous second quarter and 31 points from Desmond Bane, the Orlando Magic handed the visiting Indiana Pacers a record-tying 12th straight loss with a 135-127 win on Sunday afternoon.
Indiana matched three previous 12-game losing streaks in franchise annals – the last one during the 1988-89 season. The Pacers can break the dubious record on Tuesday when they host the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Paolo Banchero scored 28 points and Anthony Black added 27 for the Magic, who have alternated wins and losses in their last 10 games. Orlando hit 26 of 34 free-throw attempts while Indiana converted 16 of 21.
Pascal Siakam posted a game-high 34 points for the Pacers and Aaron Nesmith had 25.
Orlando trailed 41-29 one minute into the second quarter before all the momentum turned the Magic’s way. Bane kickstarted a 17-0 Orlando run with an elbow jumper and two free throws. Tyus Jones hit a 3-pointer to put the Magic ahead 43-41 and Bane closed the run with a 34-foot 3-pointer.
Orlando, which outscored Indiana 41-22 in the second, pushed the lead to as much as 13 and led 69-58 at halftime.
Indiana made its first nine shots in the second half — most of them layups — and pulled within 95-92 on Siakam’s 3-pointer with 3:59 left in the third. Siakam scored 20 points in the quarter, but Orlando got a late 3-point play from Bane and led 107-100 after three.
The Pacers reclaimed a brief 116-115 lead on a pair of Nembhard free throws with 7:29 left, but Orlando answered with a 9-0 run that included threes by Banchero and Black.
Indiana closed to 130-127, but Tristan Da Silva hit a three from the wing with 1:10 left to seal it. Indiana missed 3-point tries on its last three possessions.
The first quarter was all Pacers. Indiana got good production from Nesmith, who had a pair of threes in the first four minutes, to take a 13-5 lead.
Jay Huff flung a reverse layup with both hands with 1.5 seconds left in the first quarter and got a lucky bounce as Indiana led 36-28 after one.
Indiana coach Rick Carlisle remains at 999 NBA victories in his career. The Pacers used their 20th different starting lineup Sunday, the most of any NBA team.

Wet weather continues in Northern California to kick off the new year. Plan for wet roads through the morning on Thursday and light to moderate rain across the region. The heaviest rain will be in the morning through about 9 a.m., while the rest of the day will have off and on showers. An isolated thunderstorm can’t be ruled out, and storms may arrive through sunset. Areas south and east of Sacramento are in the best window for an isolated storm. Plan for wet roads through the morning on Thursday and light to moderate rain across the region.
The heaviest rain will be in the morning through about 9 a.m., while the rest of the day will have off and on showers.
An isolated thunderstorm can’t be ruled out, and storms may arrive through sunset. Areas south and east of Sacramento are in the best window for an isolated storm.

Expect Valley gusts up to 35 mph through Saturday morning. Winds will relax to breezes Saturday afternoon and remain breezy through Sunday.
Snow
Rain is expected in the Sierra through early Friday. By later Friday, snow levels will drop to the 7,000-foot elevation.
When enough snow falls on the roads, chain controls could be put into effect. When that happens, vehicles without four-wheel drive or snow tires are required to install chains on their tires.
The speed limit on Interstate 80 is also reduced to 30 mph, while it also reduces to 25 mph on Highway 50.

Two helicopters crashed midair in New Jersey on Sunday, killing one person and critically injuring another, authorities say.Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel said rescuers responded to a report of an aviation crash at about 11:25 a.m. Video from the scene shows a helicopter spinning rapidly to the ground. Police and fire crews subsequently extinguished flames that engulfed one of the helicopters.The Federal Aviation Administration described the crash as a midair collision between an Enstrom F-28A helicopter and Enstrom 280C helicopter over Hammonton Municipal Airport. Only the pilots were on board each aircraft. One was killed, and the other was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.Sal Silipino, owner of a cafe near the crash site, said the pilots were regulars at the restaurant and would often have breakfast together. He said he and other customers watched the helicopters take off before one began spiraling downward, followed by the other.“It was shocking,” he said. “I’m still shaking after that happened.”Hammonton is a town of about 15,000 people located in Atlantic County in the southern part of New Jersey, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) southeast of Philadelphia. The KCRA 3 weather team is issuing Alert Days for Wednesday and Thursday, which are issued to indicate conditions that could prove risky to public safety.Friday is expected to be an Impact Day. Showers and mountain snow will likely cause travel delays, but winds will be calmer.Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Sunday night that emergency response teams and equipment are being deployed to nine counties to protect from flooding and severe weather. A picture is beginning to emerge about Nick Reiner’s movements before and after his parents were killed.
Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood home Sunday afternoon.
Nick Reiner, 32, was charged Tuesday with their murders. But authorities offered few details, including when or how the couple died, how investigators came to focus on Nick Reiner as a suspect and what a motive for the crime could be.
But a rough timeline is beginning to taking shape:
A Santa Monica hotel
A source familiar with the investigation told The Times that Nick Reiner was at the Pierside Santa Monica hotel Sunday.
That was hours after Nick and his parents got into some type of argument at a Saturday holiday party at talk show host Conan O’Brien’s home, according to several family friends.

A hotel staff member told The Times police had been actively investigating at the hotel since Sunday and were still there on Tuesday afternoon. The management of the hotel did not respond to requests for comment. The worker spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to comment.
Authorities also declined to comment on the hotel and what role, if any, it plays in the case.
It is unclear when Nick Reiner checked in and when he left The Pierside Santa Monica, which sits a few blocks from the beach, with rooms that start at $220 a night.
When police got to the hotel, Nick Reiner was gone.

An arrest near USC
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Gang and Narcotics Division, along with a U.S. Marshals task force that typically searches for fugitives, tracked Nick Reiner down in South L.A. on Sunday night, according to L.A. Police Chief Jim McDonnell. The arrest was without incident, the chief said.
Reiner was found near USC, around 15 miles from the scene of the stabbings, McDonnell said. He declined to provide details on how the suspect was found and apprehended.
Reiner was taken into custody around 9:15 p.m. Sunday and booked on suspicion of murder at 5:04 a.m. Monday.

Unanswered questions
Prosecutors filed two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances against Nick Reiner on Tuesday afternoon. He also faces a special allegation that he used a deadly weapon, a knife, in the crime, L.A. County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman said during a news conference Tuesday.
Still, officials have not offered a narrative about what happened.
One key question is when the Reiners were killed. Prosecutors have alleged Nick Reiner stabbed his parents in “approximately the early morning hours” on Sunday, according to a news release. But a specific time has not been disclosed.
“We don’t have that kind of specificity yet,” L.A. Police Chief Jim McDonnell said of the timeline of the couple’s deaths. “We’re waiting on the coroner to be able to try and determine as best they can at this point.”
On Sunday afternoon, a massage therapist showed up at the Reiner home for a weekly session with the couple. When there was no answer at the gate, the therapist called their daughter, Romy Reiner, who arrived at the home and discovered her father’s body, according to a source close to the Reiner family who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Reiners’ bodies were found in their bedroom in their Brentwood home, LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi said at the department’s weekly commission meeting.

With no official time of death, it’s unclear whether Nick Reiner checked in at the Santa Monica hotel before or after his parents were killed.
Nick Reiner was living in a guesthouse on his parents’ property and his mother had become increasingly concerned about his mental health in recent weeks, a family friend said.
Authorities on Tuesday also declined to offer a possible motive for the killings.
With prosecutors alleging a special circumstance — that Nick Reiner committed multiple homicides — he could face a death sentence or life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted at trial. Prosecutors have not made a decision on whether to seek capital punishment.

USC women’s basketball coach Lindsay Gottlieb suffered a bitter defeat Saturday when her team lost 79-51 to top-ranked team UConn. But after she walked off court, she weighed in on a more pressing matter: the deadly shooting at her alma mater, Brown University.
“It’s the guns,” Gottlieb said as she began a post-game news conference at the Ivy League school. “It doesn’t need to be this way.”
Gottlieb said she got back to the locker room Saturday after the USC Trojans’ home game with No. 1 UConn Huskies and had “a million text messages” from former Brown teammates. A gunman had opened fire during final exams, killing two students and injuring nine others.
“We’re the only country that lives this way,” Gottlieb said, her voice shaking as she noted that she knew people who have children at Brown. “Parents should not have to be worried about their kids.”
Gottlieb, who graduated from Brown in 1999, was a member of the women’s basketball team and served as a student assistant coach during her senior season.
One of her former teammates, she said, was flying into Providence on Sunday, because she had a daughter who had taken shelter in the basement of the library, and “she doesn’t know what’s going on there.”
Oscar Perez, the Providence police chief, said Sunday that a person of interest in his 20s was in custody. No charges have been filed, he said, noting “we’re in the process of collecting evidence.”
On Saturday, students and faculty spent the night on lockdown, trapped inside classrooms and dorms while law enforcement fanned out across Providence to search for the shooter.
“Hopefully, everyone is safe and praying for peace for those that have lost people,” Gottlieb said before she assessed her team’s game against the Huskies. “And that’s that. It’s more important than basketball. We can all be better.”
Brown University has canceled all remaining classes and exams for the fall semester.
“The past 24 hours really have been unimaginable,” Christina Paxson, university president, wrote in an email to alumni. “It’s a tragedy that no university community is ever ready for.”

The Atlanta Falcons are back home after defeating the New Orleans Saints 24-10 on the road on Sunday. The victory may have only been the Falcons’ first in five weeks, but it has some significance. The win reignited the discussion over what it would take to make the playoffs, at the very least.
The Falcons are back on the road against the New York Jets (2-9 overall) on Sunday. A loss to the Jets would render this entire breakdown moot. The Falcons cannot afford to lose any of their remaining games. The seven losses are more than any of the teams that are in Atlanta’s way of getting a wild card spot have. Those teams are the following: the Detroit Lions (7-4), Green Bay Packers (7-3-1), Seattle Seahawks (8-3), San Francisco 49ers (8-4), and the Carolina Panthers (6-6 following a loss at San Francisco on Monday night. The Panthers hold a tiebreaker over the Falcons after sweeping them this season.
Following the Jets game, the Falcons will return home to host the Seahawks, who are a game behind the L.A. Rams (9-2 overall) in the NFC West on Sunday, Dec. 7. Atlanta will host the Rams and NFL MVP candidate and former University of Georgia Bulldogs star quarterback Matthew Stafford (30 touchdowns and two interceptions this season) next month in the last Monday Night Football game of the year on Dec. 29. Both games can be described as the toughest of the season for Atlanta.
Atlanta will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, Dec. 11, and a loss to Tampa will end the season, even if the Falcons win every other game they play from this point forward. The season-opening loss to Tampa has Atlanta in a position to not lose to the Buccaneers again or be swept by two teams in the NFC South (Carolina).
The Falcons have games against the Cardinals in Arizona on Sunday, Dec. 21, and the Saints at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to close the regular season on Jan. 4. Neither will matter if the winning doesn’t continue. The Philadelphia Eagles (8-3), Chicago Bears (8-3), Bucs, and Rams are leading their respective divisions and won’t be out of the playoff picture without a free fall of some sort.
The Falcons are not done with the 2025 season, but it will take a lot of winning and a miracle.

HOWEVER WE GOT DOWN TO 41 DEGREES. THAT’S ABOUT NORMAL. AND AS THAT DEW POINT, THAT’S WHERE THE FOG CAME FROM. ALSO CLEAR SKIES AND LIGHT WINDS. THAT’S WHAT WE’RE SEEING RIGHT NOW. 50 DEGREES IN THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY, A LITTLE COOLER FURTHER SOUTH IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, WHERE THAT FOG IS SITTING OVER. WE ALSO HAVE 48 IN THE FOOTHILLS OF THE SIERRA, COMING IN AT 36 DEGREES CURRENTLY. HERE’S A CLOSER LOOK AT THAT FOG OVER STOCKTON RIGHT NOW. AGAIN, IT DEVELOPED OVERNIGHT. NEVER LEFT TODAY. After the fog lifts, skies will be mostly sunny with temperatures peaking near 60 once again in the valley, upper 50s in the foothills, and low 50s in the Sierra with light winds. Similar weather repeats each day as high pressure remains dominant. Systems passing to our north will bring a few high clouds each day after the morning fog clears. Highs on Thanksgiving will be in the low 60s under mostly sunny skies with light winds.Thanksgiving in the foothills will be pleasant, with highs in the low 60s; the Sierra will be in the mid-50s with a light breeze.Friday looks mild as well, but a passing system will bring increasing cloud cover.
