Heatstroke can be ‘sneaky.’ Here is the ‘major red flag’ you need to pay attention to – WTOP News

With extremely hot temperatures blanketing the D.C. area, there are a few cardinal warning signs of heat-related ailments you should be on the lookout for.

Hot weather is forecast this week with the heat index possibly breaking 100 degrees on some days. What’s certain is that extreme heat can be dangerous to your health.

“The first and foremost important thing to remember is that heat exhaustion, heatstroke, can be kind of sneaky,” said Dr. Neil Roy, chief medical officer at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center and an emergency room physician.

There are a few cardinal warning signs of heat-related ailments.

The first one is feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or weak — or recognizing that your loved ones are confused or are acting differently from their baseline.

“As that progresses, confusion is a major red flag,” Roy said. “And then, when they stop sweating and their mouths become dry. Those are red flags for heat exhaustion, heat stroke.”

At the sign of any of these symptoms, “the first thing to do is get inside and start hydrating,” Roy said.

“If you’re outside or your loved one or your friends are outside, and now they’re saying, ‘Hey, I feel kind of lightheaded, I’m feeling a little dizzy.’ The first thing to do is go inside, remove yourself from the heat, and then hydrate,” Roy said. “After those two steps have been taken care of, and if the symptoms don’t go away, then I would seek medical attention.”

That’s especially important is someone is experiencing confusion, Roy said. In that case, he recommends calling 911 and having the person go to a hospital to get checked out.

“Once confusion and changes in your mental status have become really pronounced, those are the reasonable times to seek medical attention,” he said.

Roy said it’s important to think ahead if you’re going to be out in the heat.

“In advance, you want to hydrate with water or sports drinks fairly regularly. … You want to have one 8-ounce bottle of water every hour (that) you’re in the heat and more if you’re (exerting yourself),” Roy said. “Hydration is one of the major pillars in preventing both heat exhaustion and dehydration.”

Drinking alcohol, however, can worsen the effects.

“Drinking alcohol also minimizes your thirst drive,” Roy said. “Typically, we see people that are in their mid-20s or 30s, and they had been drinking beer outside, and they won’t recognize the heat come on. And when they come to the ER, they come in typically confused and their body temperature is very high.”

Hot weather is nothing to be trifled with. Don’t forget that car temperatures can go up very quickly and to not leave children or animals unattended in the car.

“I think the biggest take-home point is to take the heat seriously,” Roy said.

    Our most vulnerable citizens

It’s especially important that people aged 65 and older, and children six years old and younger drink enough water when out in extreme heat. Roy said that heat related illnesses can be a particular risk to seniors and small children.

“As we get older and younger — the extremes of age — our needs change. Older patients … typically have a lower drive for thirst, meaning they’re not going to be thirsty the way they would be 20 years ago. So if you’re in the slightly older age category, hydrating more is really important because your body is not going to tell you that you’re dehydrated,” said Roy.

The same is true for children, so parents or guardians must ensure that small kids are properly hydrated when outdoors in the hot weather.

“Children under the age of five or six may not recognize when they’re thirsty in advance. They’ll be outside, running around playing, even swimming, and not drinking water and staying hydrated. So hydrating at a similar rate, with or without sports drinks plus water, is really important among the pillars of preventing both dehydration and heat exhaustion,” said Roy.

Seniors and small children are no strangers to the hospital emergency room during heat waves.

“We’ll see it in older patients that will come in not acting right, being confused, not behaving normally and have high body temperatures. And then there are pediatric patients — we’ll see 1, 2 or 3-year-olds that have been outside and their body temperatures have just risen, risen, risen,” said Roy.

  • Sunburn Remedies For Those Who Forgot SPF

Sunburn Remedies For Those Who Forgot SPF

    I’m from New Jersey
(I know, hide your horrified gasps), which means I spent Memorial Day Weekend “down the shore.” In case you’re unaware, to inaugurate the start of summer, the entirety of the state flocks to the beaches to party the way Snooki intended. It’s every bit as lawless as you could imagine, but it’s tradition nonetheless.

And while your perception of New Jersey may be fake tans and tanning beds galore, my pasty pale skin begs to differ. Although I can develop a tan over the summer, those first few beach trips scorch my skin to no end. I can’t even imagine the deep fine lines and wrinkles I’ve accumulated from just this past weekend alone.

Even if I do have a small base tan from a short vacay during the winter, I need to remind myself that I’m not stronger than the literal Sun. I’m not “built differently” by any means and I can’t leave the house without sunscreen. It’s the epitome of laziness on my part, unable to take five minutes to slather some lotion onto my body.

So yes, I write this as I’m sunburnt and peeling. I’m regretting my actions, because they were totally preventable and wholly my fault. However, I’m now in stage two of sunburn grief: full determination to turn it into a lasting tan. If I can’t win in one way, I’ll win in another.

I’ve spent the past 20 or so summers of my life on the beach. I know how to transform a sunburn quickly from painful and scorching to a nice cocoa tan. And it’s honestly not as hard as you’d think.

How To Care For Your Sunburn, The Right Way

Let’s be real: your skin is literally screaming for help when you get sunburnt. Your skin has lost a lot of hydration, so the key is to look for ingredients that will remedy that. Just like your face, your skin barrier can be disrupted anywhere on your body. It’s why your skin can be dry year-round. Your entire body’s skin barrier is essentially broken when you get a sunburn.

You’ve depleted skin cells, which means you’re going to want to stay super hydrated. Regenerate those cells from the inside out.

But that’s not all. Getting a moisturizing cleanser for your body with good moisturizing ingredients like coconut oil or shea butter can help restore some of that lost moisture. A light moisturizer is recommended post-shower, like an aloe vera so you don’t trap in the heat from your skin.

If you’re in dire trouble, a hydrocortisone cream can reduce redness and inflammation. By acting quickly, you’re mitigating the chance of damaging your skin long-term.

    Quick At-Home Sunburn Remedies

If you’re in a pinch and can’t make it to the store for your sunburn remedy needs, there are a few at-home sunburn cures that can help. By soaking paper towels in cold milk, you can pull the heat away from your body. If you apply yogurt to your skin, the vitamin E will help with inflammation.

The same goes for cucumbers, which are known for reducing inflammation in skin (it’s why you put them over your sleep-deprived eyes). You’ll also want to take ibuprofen to reduce your inflammation and frequent cold showers to keep your body temperature down.

    Best Sunburn Remedies

However, there’s no easier way to cure a sunburn than keeping around a few clasic store-bought products. I’ve been impartial to a few after-sun care brands like Maui Babe and Hawaiian Tropic for years now…but thanks to TikTok, I’ve found so many different ways to cure my sunburn quickly. Here are my findings:

Best Aloe Face Serum:The Ordinary Aloe 2% + NAG 2% Serum

If you’re a skincare enthusiast like myself, you know The Ordinary has the best serums at affordable pricing. This aloe serum has it all: hydrating aloe vera to cool down that sunburn…plus it reduces the appearance of pores and scars, uneven skin tone, and strengthens your skin barrier all at once!

Best Classic Aloe:Banana Boat Soothing After Sun Gel

Growing up, I was confident that if I went into my bathroom cabinet, this Banana Boat After Sun Gel would be front and center. It was always on-hand for beach vacations when I would somehow scorch my baby skin after layers of SPF applied. It’s a tried-and-true, pro tip: keep in the fridge to cool your body down even more.

Best Aloe + SPF:Cosrx Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50

Another skincare bestie is Cosrx, who is known for their Snail Mucin. The K-Beauty brand also has a very popular aloe face cream for those who battled the sun and lost. The best part about this cream? It also has SPF so you’re already prepared.

Best After Sun Lotion:Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Hydration After Sun Lotion

Dermatologist recommended, Hawaiian Tropic is one of the world’s favorite suncare companies. It contains moisturizing shea butter and aloe vera to make your skin feel rejuvenated and, more importantly, less burnt. It feels (and smells) like an everyday lotion, with extra moisturization to heal your burn fast.

Best For Developing Tan:Maui Babe After Browning Lotion Tan Enhancer & Healer

You’ve probably heard of the Maui Babe Browning Lotion from TikTok, but trust me…this After Browning Lotion is probably twice as good. It has super-hydrating ingredients like Glycerin, Macadamia Nut Oil, and Aloe Vera and gives me the healthiest, glowing tan I could want. It’s worth all the hype, I would know because I’ve been using it for years.

Best After Sun Spray: Sun Bum After Sun Cool Down Spray

If you’re anything like me, you prefer spray cans of SPF and aloe to lotion. My current fave is the Sun Bum Cool Down Spray, which goes on as a matte oil-consistency, and gets the job done quickly.

Innovative Sunhat Gaining Kickstarter Success for Jobless Man Living in Parents’ Basement

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 5, 2017

The Shapeshifter Sunhat has reached over 75 percent of its $35,000 goal in the first two weeks of a 60-day campaign, and shows no signs of slowing. Not a professional inventor, nor a savvy businessman, the Shapeshifter’s designer, C. Damien Henning, is an average Colorado outdoorsman and world traveler who wanted to share something useful with fellow adventurers. After spending 11 years and thousands of dollars developing the hat purely on his own, he has now garnered grassroots support that continues to grow.

The majority of highly successful Kickstarter campaigns are launched by established companies with pre-existing press contacts, substantial advertising/PR budgets, experienced teams that fashion campaign pages into professional-looking websites, thousands of dollars in pre-orders to boost “launch” donations, and a substantial established customer base.

“There has never been a sunhat like the Shapeshifter before. Necessity was certainly the mother of this invention. Trekking at high elevations while needing to protect my skin from the sun, and having a hat that I could beat up, sweat in, get rained on, stuff in my backpack, throw into a washer to clean and not bend in the wind. It didn’t exist. So, I had to make one.”

    C. Damien Henning, Owner and Founder of “Roamin Republic LLC”

It’s hard for the Average Joe to compete with that. However, in the case of the Shapeshifter Sunhat, a Nobody coming from Nowhere (unemployed, living in Mom and Dad’s basement, driving the same car since 1995) began with nothing but an idea and determination, and has utilized crowdfunding to its keenest potential.

“The Shapeshifter Sunhat” had no pre-orders and zero PR exposure at the time of launch. All it had was Damien’s personal Facebook network composed of local friends, travel buddies, and work mates — from the frozen wasteland of Antarctica, to the tropics of the Marshall Islands — who put their trust in Damien and his abilities; his personal network helped spread the word from his parents’ basement up.

    Noticing a Need

Through his love of the outdoors and adventure travel, Damien noticed that (with outdoor recreation growing in popularity all over the world), the threat of significant sun damage to our skin is as real as ever. However, the magnitude of this threat is often overlooked by many outdoor-loving consumers. No significant advancements have been made in recreational sun protection technology for years.

Via his new one man company “Roamin Republic LLC,” Damien was pleased to announce the pending release and Kickstarter launch of the latest revolutionary product in personal sun protection. “The Shapeshifter Sunhat.”

The Shapeshifter is a bendable, shape-able, crush-able, durable, super portable, machine washable, waterproof, extra wind resistant, wide-brimmed sunhat.

Although sun hats already exist in the market, they are not fully adequate. Wide-brimmed hats that have softer brims lose their shape very quickly and blow into or out of the face in the wind. Also, using them for facial rain protection results in the soft brim buckling, and more often than not, warping the hat’s shape for good.

Stiff, rigid sunhats (such as those utilized by many outdoor workers) are great in the wind, but are heavy and impossible to collapse for easy storage and transport.

If the brim has a thin cable support, it’s similarly not compactable, and is still pretty useless in the wind.

    A Better Solution

Damien searched for and finally discovered the best way to get a strong, bendable, shape-able, resilient and waterproof cable into the brim of a high-quality sunhat.

    He calls it “The Shapeshifter.”

With the unique cable in place, the Shapeshifter can do what no other sunhat can:

⦁ The brim will not fold or flop in a head wind up to 65 mph.
⦁ The brim will not buckle under heavy rain, keeping drops from smacking the face.
⦁ The back can be bent up and fine tuned to give clearance while hiking with a backpack or while playing sports.
⦁ It can be folded to increase its compactness and portability, and can be put into small bags or larger pockets.
⦁ It can be bent and shaped into an unlimited amount of styles, and hold that shape indefinitely.

In addition, the Shapeshifter also includes other features that many consumers will find useful:

⦁ A neck cape that folds up into a pocket and deploys at the user’s convenience (this pocket can also be useful for hiding cash and credit cards)
⦁ A zip-off crown that can allow hair to be unconstricted (this is a useful feature for those with thick hair or those who prefer the free feeling of a visor to a hat)
⦁ An adjustable cord to fine-tune the size to the wearer’s exact needs
⦁ A locking chinstrap that secures the hat firmly to the wearer’s head (what’s the point in having a super wind-resistant sunhat if the hat won’t stay on in heavy wind?)
    ⦁ Side mesh for ventilation
⦁ A moisture-wicking sweatband stitched into the crown that won’t flop out

This is a unique Kickstarter project in the “Product Design” category, considering the forum is dominated by high-tech items from larger companies with greater backing. Relatively few outdoor items have had the success or exposure that the basement-begotten Shapeshifter Sunhat promises to have.
