7 Outfit Formulas I’ll Never Wear Again (and 7 I’m Wearing on Repeat)

    [ad_1]

I’ve worn a lot of outfits in my lifetime and tried on even more. There are a few that I’ve worn some variation of hundreds of times and will probably continue to wear for decades to come. At the same time, there are many that, despite my trying to make them work countless times, just weren’t worth a second go. That, or they were worn for years but simply no longer match my sense of style or the ways that fashion’s evolved. The more outfits you wear, the more you learn about what you like—and in turn don’t like.

Since entering into the new year, I’ve really cracked down on those fashion combinations that just don’t fit in with my style and/or current trends anymore, deciding to finally cut them off instead of holding out hope that they’ll make their way back into my good graces. In total, I’ve narrowed down my eliminations to seven full outfits, from skirt and dress looks to denim ones. Scroll down to see which ones I’m on the outs with and which will remain in my rotation indefinitely.

  • I Love a Dainty Watch, But I Tried On This Men's Style, and Now I'm Obsessed

I Love a Dainty Watch, But I Tried On This Men's Style, and Now I'm Obsessed

    [ad_1]

The fashion world is currently enamored with watches, especially ones designed for and worn by women. Instagram is loaded with them, showcased on wrists and stacked alongside sculptural bracelets or in a decorative box to show off a growing collection. In a retail space once dominated by men, women are embracing these meticulously crafted and categorically luxurious investment items with open arms.

In the past, celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez dabbled in larger timepieces, but this time around, most of the watches that are trending among women are rather dainty in size. Think smaller Tanks and Baignoires and Lady Datejusts.  While I am nothing if not smitten with all three of the aforementioned styles, I’m also someone who spent her early 20s in a men’s Seiko stolen from her father, which is why I’ve always had a soft spot for bigger, more substantial timepieces when time is taken to choose the right one and, of course, it is styled just right.

One trick to styling a men’s watch is to stick with cases that are 40 millimeters or below. Anything larger than that tends to be overly showy, a trait that’s best avoided, especially for an everyday watch. (Luxury watches are expensive and sought after, so you don’t want to draw an abundance of attention to yours. In 2022, nearly 7000 Rolexes were reported stolen or missing, according to data from The Watch Register.) I also prefer to go for classic color options and minimal designs that can be dressed up or down and will fit seamlessly with my existing jewelry collection and wardrobe.

  • The $15 Trend That In-the-Know Fashion People Are Wearing With *Everything*

The $15 Trend That In-the-Know Fashion People Are Wearing With *Everything*

    [ad_1]

If you’re simultaneously obsessed with the latest micro-trends and too intimidated to test them out, you’ve come to the right place. This is Ways to Wear, a monthly series where editor Eliza Huber offers a dose of outfit inspiration focused on current trends that feel intriguing yet overwhelming at the same time. Consider it your guide to actually wearing the coolest items of the moment, no matter how puzzling they might appear at first.

Even the chicest outfits can fall flat sometimes if they’re missing a certain level of oomf. Everything about them can be perfect, from the fit to the color combinations and so on, but without that finishing touch that ties it all together, the sartorial spark will never light. And right now, the easiest and most cost-effective way to fire up your outfits is with hosiery. Yes, I said hosiery, and no, I don’t mean pantyhose.

From red and burgundy tights to knee-high sheer socks, the world of hosiery is one full of possibilities. And of all the leg décor that’s trending among fashion people this year, the style making the most significant impact by far is fishnets. Once considered tacky and more than a touch costumey, in recent seasons, the latticed tights have received a dressed-up makeover, with brands such as Gucci, Tory Burch, and Victoria Beckham pairing them with elegant dresses and separates, adding a touch of intrigue to every combination. They balance out any outfit, ensuring that no ensemble ever risks being called boring.

  • How to Style the Jeans Alt That Fashion People Will Be Wearing 24/7 This Fall

If you’re simultaneously obsessed with the latest micro-trends and too intimidated to test them out, you’ve come to the right place. This is Ways to Wear, a monthly series where editor Eliza Huber offers a dose of outfit inspiration centered around current trends that feel intriguing yet overwhelming at the same time. Consider it your guide to actually wearing the coolest items of the moment, no matter how puzzling they might appear at first.

Jeans for fall? Groundbreaking. Every time September rolls around, we all run to grab our denim that’s been gathering dust in the heat of summer, replaced by cutoffs (or, if you’re me, hot pants). This year, I’ve found myself only strolling over to my jeans, not sprinting like usual. Instead, I’ve been grabbing for another pant silhouette: track pants.

Following sightings in collections by Wales Bonner, Tibi, Miu Miu, and more designers that are all bringing a sense of chicness and stylization to the sporty aesthetic, track pants are quickly becoming the bottoms to wear when jeans just won’t cut it. They’re best when paired with unexpected tops and footwear, and the key to styling your pairs is doing so in an entirely non-fitness fashion and acting as if they were any other trousers that you’d style alongside kitten heels, statement handbags, and tops that don’t include a built-in sports bra.

To help in the styling department, find a handful of ways to wear fashion’s new favorite denim replacement below.

  • Skirts Are Top of Mind for Fall—6 Ways I’m Styling Them This Season

Skirts Are Top of Mind for Fall—6 Ways I’m Styling Them This Season

    [ad_1]

If there is one fashion item I am seeing around New York, on my Instagram feed, and on the runways, it’s great skirts. I’ve come to the conclusion that the fashion crowd has decided this fall is going to be the season of skirts. Miniskirts, denim skirts, and column skirts are all fair game. Once you get your hands on the skirt of your dreams, the question is how you are going to style it. After all, a skirt is just a skirt without all of the rest of the pieces working in harmony to turn that skirt into a full-on look. After combing through tons of styling inspiration and studying the feeds of all of my favorite fashion influencers, I came up with six different ways to style skirts for fall that are so chic I almost didn’t want to share. But gatekeeping isn’t really my style.

Keep scrolling to see the six ways to style skirts for fall that I can’t stop thinking about.

  • Selena Gomez Wore the Prada-Approved Styling Trick That Makes Every Look Chicer

Selena Gomez Wore the Prada-Approved Styling Trick That Makes Every Look Chicer

    [ad_1]

Since Paris Fashion Week is just around the corner, it should come as no surprise that most of the chicest celebrities are either already unpacked and wandering around the City of Lights or will be very soon. One such A-lister is Selena Gomez, whose IG stories have been blowing up with show-stopping outfits courtesy of her new stylist Erin Walsh, including thigh-high, patent leather stiletto boots paired with an Alaïa poplin minidress as well as a long-sleeve leopard-print maxi. But of all the looks the Rare Beauty founder’s debuted thus far on her Paris trip, the one I’m most interested in is by far her most paired back of the bunch.

On Sunday, Gomez was spotted leaving the Hôtel Plaza Athénée on her way to an event at the Bulgari Hôtel wearing a gray blazer-and-capris set with a white corset and matching GCDS handbag, baby-blue Paris Texas heels, and a blue poplin shirt with the collar perfectly popped and peaking out from underneath her tailored outerwear. To top off the evening’s ensemble, she added gold hoop earrings and a cocktail ring from Jennifer Fisher.

Surprisingly enough, it wasn’t the on-trend capris or the chic color pairing that caught my eye about the look, though both were certainly note-worthy. Rather, what I noticed immediately about it was the peek-a-boo collar, a styling trick that I first saw rise up at Prada’s fall/winter 2023 show and then again outside of the Italian brand’s spring/summer 2024 show in Milan last week. Small but extremely impactful, the simple unveiling of a statement collar from underneath a blazer or coat made her outfit tenfold more dynamic and interesting.

  • The Newest Dress Trend? Wearing Two At Once

The Newest Dress Trend? Wearing Two At Once

    [ad_1]

Given how popular dresses are and have been throughout history, genuinely new trends don’t come around all that often. Even the really shocking ones, from completely sheer maxis to the tiniest micro-minis, aren’t so much new as just risqué. So when one comes along that isn’t just a recycled fad from a past decade, it’s a big deal, one that I, as a fashion editor that looks at clothes all day long, don’t take lightly.

With that, you can imagine my excitement when Tory Burch‘s spring/summer 2023 runway show took place during NYFW, displaying a handful of looks that didn’t just include one inventive dress, but two, styled together in a completely fresh manner that I couldn’t wait to copy. Specifically, the NY-based designer showcased sculpted, sleeveless minidresses layered on top of longer, slip-like and sometimes sheer dresses (and skirts), adding dimension to the ensemble with little to no effort. In other looks, she layered see-through mesh maxis on top of metallic dresses of the same length, allowing the below pieces to shine from below but in a mellow, muted manner, thanks to the translucent fabric on top. Genius.

Now that the collection is available to shop, many online have gravitated towards the double-dress trend that Burch debuted on the runway, with others on Instagram coming up with even more inventive methods for wearing two dresses at once, adding a voluminous slip dress under a bias-cut one for increased shape or doubling up on clashing-colored dresses to create eye-catching contrasts. Below, see all the ways that fashion’s finest are seeing double in the dress department in 2023.

  • I Tried the Free Summer Styling Trick Everyone Is Wearing, and *Wow* I Felt Chic

I Tried the Free Summer Styling Trick Everyone Is Wearing, and *Wow* I Felt Chic

    [ad_1]

I can’t say with certainty when exactly this trend started, but I can tell you that it landed on my radar about a month ago, and I’ve been tracking it ever since. From spotting it on my TikTok FYP and Instagram feed to seeing it on my very own stylish co-workers, there’s something about the all-white look paired with black accessories that has taken the fashion set by storm. It truly is the perfect virtually free styling trick for summer. I say free because the chances you have a white top and bottom (or dress), black shoes, and a black bag—bonus points for a belt—are very high, meaning you technically don’t have to buy anything to test it out.

Speaking of testing it out, I did just that prior to writing this story. I opted for my usual combination of jeans and a tee but this time in white. Finishing with a black shoulder bag, suede belt, and ballet flats, I hit the town doing my best to stay clean with two kids in tow. As the headline so plainly put it, I really did feel chic and like I was making the most of my favorite wardrobe basics. To see and shop my look plus eight others that will have you convinced, just keep scrolling.

  • Your Favorite Hoodie Is “Fashion” Now—4 Runway Looks That Prove It

Your Favorite Hoodie Is “Fashion” Now—4 Runway Looks That Prove It

    [ad_1]

If you’re simultaneously obsessed with the latest micro-trends and too intimidated to test them out, you’ve come to the right place. This is Ways to Wear, a monthly series where editor Eliza Huber offers a dose of outfit inspiration centered around current trends that feel intriguing yet overwhelming at the same time. Consider it your guide to actually wearing the coolest items of the moment, no matter how puzzling they might appear at first.

Time and again, Miuccia Prada arrives at fashion month with a wealth of new ideas, both for the family business Prada and the brand she herself created, Miu Miu, in 1993. The fall/winter 2023 season was no different. This time around at Miu Miu, Prada’s collection seemed to zero in on the beauty in imperfection, showcasing models looking intentionally frazzled while dressed in pieces that aren’t usually considered chic or “fashion,” like leggings, sweater sets, and most, significantly, hoodies, which are quickly becoming one of the most talked-about trends of the moment

“Through examination and study, clothes are shifted both in structure and their placement on the body,” a press release from the show reads. “Familiar items—twinsets, knee-length skirts, hooded sweatshirts—move around the figure, afforded different strengths and fragilities through their fabrication.” In more words, Prada was able to breathe new life into pieces that have long been overlooked through high-quality construction, interesting proportions, and intentional styling.

As usual, the designer tapped stylist Lotta Volkova to demonstrate the coolest ways to wear the collection’s offerings, putting simple gray hoodies underneath leather and herringbone peacoats and on top of buttoned-up cashmere cardigans and turtlenecks. With them, some models wore soft leggings and sneakers, and others skipped pants altogether, donning just briefs, tights, and open-toe heels for a more lustrous take on the basic layering piece. From the show, one could easily take away that the possibilities are endless when it comes to wearing hooded sweatshirts in 2023. Then again, everything looks better on the runway, especially when it’s located at the beautiful Palais d’Iéna in Paris. Bringing them off the runway and into the real world is the truest test, which is why I decided to tackle the budding hoodie trend for my latest installment of Ways to Wear

Below, discover my takes on four hoodie-clad looks from Miu Miu’s F/W 23 show and shop the basic that’s gearing up for total domination.

  • The Low-Key Cool Way to Style Your Sweaters in 2023

The Low-Key Cool Way to Style Your Sweaters in 2023

    [ad_1]

As someone who’s spent her fair share of money on of-the-moment fashion items, there’s nothing better than a trend that can be re-created entirely with items that already live in your closet. And unless you live somewhere that never dips below 90ºF, I’m pretty sure you own at least one sweater that can, with little effort, be tied around your shoulders in the kind of laissez-faire manner that’s going viral on Instagram in 2023.

Whether it’s worn with activewear to give your post-Pilates ensemble a stylish touch or another knit for a modernized take on the sweater set, the sweater-around-the-shoulders look is a huge hit this year. And for good reason since lazy dressing is having a moment right now, and nothing’s lazier than tossing your favorite knit around your neck as opposed to actually putting it on. Plus, since most of us already own about a million different sweaters (oh sorry, is that just me?), there’s no trekking to the store required. *Pauses for lazy dressers to sigh in relief.*

Below, see how low-key-fashion people are styling their knits in 2023.

  • This Is How Fashion Girls Will Be Wearing Denim in 2023, Period

This Is How Fashion Girls Will Be Wearing Denim in 2023, Period

    [ad_1]

These days, it seems like denim washes, fits, and rises cycle through periods of popularity every week rather than a decade. (Remember actual trend cycles? Me neither.) Because of that, reporting on such changes in the jeans space can, at times, feel repetitive. I’m not going to do that. Instead, I’ve chosen to focus my time and energy on the ways that chic people are wearing their jeans as opposed to the types of jeans they’re wearing. And in 2023, there’s one particular styling method that’s taking the fashion world by storm.

Canadian tuxedos aren’t exactly new, but then again, what is? Like everything else in fashion, the trend of wearing denim with denim has a tendency to return to the sartorial zeitgeist every few years, always with a fresh, modern look that makes us remember why we loved it so much the last time it was cool. And by the looks of my Instagram feed, 2023 is gearing up to be the latest year afflicted. Ahead, see how fashion girls are doubling up on denim in the early stages of the new year.
