How to Use Trends 101 Main Image

For all my talk about styling, I’ve never talked about the one thing I get the most questions about: trends.

Trends are ever-changing (duh!), and with the trend cycle accelerating, it can be difficult to keep up.

But trends can also help you experiment with your style, and they can open up new avenues for inspiration.

For instance, maybe you try Pantone’s color of the year (Peach fuzz) for the first time and realize it’s actually your *perfect* color. Or maybe leopard print works with everything in your closet. And you never would’ve known if it wasn’t trending.

This week, I’ll share all my tips and tricks for using trends and incorporating them into your closet for the long term.

Trends are easy and affordable to shop for, and it’s easy to find inspo on how to wear them. By nature, trends are ubiquitous when they’re in style.

Unfortunately, this also means they come and go fast. Today, we love cherry red, bows and ribbons, and leopard print. Tomorrow? It might be olive green, cowboy boots, and camo.

So what happens after this short lifespan? What do you do with those trendy pieces you bought? Is peach fuzz still your perfect shade? Or does leopard print still work with the rest of your closet?

How can you be sure that a trend works for you long after it leaves your FYP?

Let me help you figure out how to work with trends without shopping too much and ensuring you will get a bang for your buck. Or decide you don’t need to add them to your closet after all.

Here are some easy tips and tricks to help you work with trends and figure out if they’re for you.

    • Like goes with like. Try incorporating things that already match your style or what you have in your closet.
    • Start small. If you want to try something that isn’t in your comfort zone, start with accessories or shoes first.
    • Classic or statement? Depending on your style, is that trend going to be a classic, everyday item or a statement piece in your closet?
    • Aesthetics are fun, but not everything. Aesthetics are trendy and made up of trendy pieces, but before you adopt a new aesthetic, consider your existing closet. If it requires buying a whole new wardrobe, it’s probably not a smart choice.
    • Borrow before shopping. Before buying a trendy piece, borrow it from a friend or family member to try it out first. See how you feel about it before you spend money on it.

How to Use Trendy Pieces in Your Wardrobe: Examples

For this guide, I chose a couple of trendy colors, patterns, pieces, and aesthetics to use as examples. Let’s get started.

    Outfit 1 (Easy): Cherry Red

For our first look, let’s go with a *very* trendy color: Cherry red.

Since last year, red has taken over our feeds and stores. Personally, I’m here for it because I looove red. But what about you? How can you know if red is for you?

Trends 101 Outfit #1: White t-shirt, medium wash jeans, red velvet Mary-Jane flats, red purse, heart earrings, gold necklace, gold and red ringsTrends 101 Outfit #1: White t-shirt, medium wash jeans, red velvet Mary-Jane flats, red purse, heart earrings, gold necklace, gold and red rings

For this example, I started with a neutral base: a cotton, white t-shirt and blue denim jeans.

Now, let’s add a pop of red. I chose a pair of red velvet Mary Jane flats and accessorized with a cherry red purse and a red statement ring. The rest of my accessories are simple: gold rings and a necklace.

As you can see, adding a trendy color is easy. I could’ve just used the flats and left everything else neutral. But it made sense for me to add more red items because I have a rainbow closet and love color. Extra color = my personal style.

But if you’re not a color lover like me, red is also a great addition to a mostly neutral closet.

The most important thing to remember is that red demands attention. So, if you’re not comfortable with that or prefer less color, you can use just one item to bring in that intensity. This could be a pair of shoes, earrings, a ring, or a bag.

    Outfit 2 (Easy): Bows/Ribbons & Peach Fuzz

Now, let’s try a combination of trends.

Bows have been appearing here and there since the Fall/Winter season. Now, they’re everywhere. They’re so feminine and so easy to incorporate into an outfit.

Then, we have Pantone’s color of the year: Peach Fuzz. Love it or hate it, that peachy color is working its way into our favorite stores.

Trends 101 Outfit #2: Pink polka dot set, peach fuzz ribbons, pink ballet flatsTrends 101 Outfit #2: Pink polka dot set, peach fuzz ribbons, pink ballet flats

For my look, I chose a ballet pink, polka dot long-sleeve shirt and pants set as a base. Then, I added pink ballet flats to follow a monochromatic, ballet theme.

Finally, I did my hair up and accessorized with a pair of peach velvet (too literal?) bows.

This outfit is already in my comfort zone, and I just added a small, trendy accessory to take it up a notch. The set is actually pinker than the bows, but since the bows are so small, it is easy to overlook that they’re not a perfect match.

Let’s start by talking about Peach Fuzz.

I’m not a big fan of light, peachy colors: I feel those shades wash me out, and I need a bit more contrast. (Read about my experience with color analysis here.) But in small doses, like bows, I think they work with other pieces in my closet.

If you have a warm neutral closet, peach fuzz might be a good addition as another neutral. If you have a cool neutral palette, peach might work better as a pop of color.

On the other hand, how do you know if bows work for you?

Bows are immediately associated with romantic, girly-girl styles, and that’s just not everyone’s cup of tea. But if that’s your style, you can work them in easily. For instance, you can wear bigger, bolder bows with more casual looks. And dainty, detailed bows look great with sexier or more dressed-up outfits.

However, if you have a more classic, androgynous, boho, or sporty type of style, bows are probably going to be tricky for you. I’d stick to simpler, smaller ribbons that you can tie however you want, in matte fabrics and colors that match your closet.

    Outfit 3 (Easy): Leopard Print

Leopard print has made a strong comeback. It started trickling in with Ganni’s viral jeans (and their whole Spring line, honestly) and then with the Mob Wife aesthetic.

Leopard print is usually made up of neutrals, so it will work with most wardrobes. To make it easier to style, choose a less saturated and contrasted version of the print.

Trends 101 Outfit #3: Leopard print skort, white t-shirt, brown corduroy shirt, white sneakersTrends 101 Outfit #3: Leopard print skort, white t-shirt, brown corduroy shirt, white sneakers

For this outfit, I paired a white t-shirt with a leopard print skort. The print, instead of its usual light and dark browns, is made up of all-dark brown shades.

Then, to add more texture and a layer, I threw on a brown corduroy shirt. Finally, I grabbed a pair of white sneakers with a very subtle leopard print detail.

As you can see, a less saturated version of a viral print makes it more subtle and timeless no matter what your style is.

Again, this print might not be for everyone, but there are so many variations of it. Chances are, you can find a leopard item that suits your style and will be in your closet for a long time.

    Outfit 4 (Medium): Tie-up Blouses

Another viral Ganni item that’s being emulated and copied everywhere: tie-up blouses. Specifically, the balloon-sleeved, peplum version.

Since this trend is more of an actual item instead of a color or print, it’s harder to decide whether it can fit in your closet.

I mean, it’s a cute blouse. We all have space for one, right?

    Yes and no.

Not all items fit with all styles and comfort levels. So, if you love this blouse, instead of looking for an exact dupe, search for something similar that leans more toward your personal style.

Trends 101 Outfit #4: Orange tie-up blouse, black jeans, black sock bootiesTrends 101 Outfit #4: Orange tie-up blouse, black jeans, black sock booties

For example, take this look I created here.

First, I wore a white and orange striped tie-up blouse. It has a large collar and white floral details. Then, to keep it casual, I added black straight-fit jeans. Finally, for shoes, I went with a sleek pair of black sock booties.

As you can see, I got myself a tie-up blouse but in a slightly different fit.

Personally, I don’t love peplum waists, and I already have a few blouses with balloon sleeves. So, I wanted a tie-up blouse with a different waist and different sleeves. When I saw this one, I knew the color was perfect for me and I loved the fit, too.

This is what I mean when I say you should look for a version of a trend that works for you and your closet.

Look for the details that work for you, and don’t just shop for an exact dupe or item.

So if you want to try this type of blouse, consider how comfortable you are with just the ties as a way to close it, the fit of the blouse, and how much the feminine style of the blouse fits your vibe. Then find a suitable piece from there.

Outfit 5 (Medium): Leopard Jeans & Red Items

Now, let’s create an entire look using trends. To do this, my best tip is to pair an item in a popular solid color with a trendy print.

Let’s also consider fit. If one of the items has a trendy fit, like a tie-up blouse, ensure that your other item has a classic fit, like an Oxford shirt or just a t-shirt.

Trends 101 Outfit #5: Leopard jeans, white tee, red sweatshirt, red and white Adidas Sambas  Trends 101 Outfit #5: Leopard jeans, white tee, red sweatshirt, red and white Adidas Sambas

Look at this outfit to see what I mean.

I started with a white t-shirt and layered on a cherry red sweatshirt. Then, I wore a pair of trendy leopard print jeans. For accessories, I kept it simple with gold jewelry. Finally, I chose a trendier piece to finish, namely some white and red Adidas Sambas.

First, I know this combo is not for everyone, but it fits my colorful style to a T. The sweatshirt has a trendy red color, but it is such a classic design that it doesn’t look “trendy”.

In contrast, the leopard print jeans are more outwardly trendy. For the jeans, I didn’t want an exact dupe of Ganni’s muted print because it doesn’t fit my closet. So I looked intensely for at least a month and a half until I found a more contrasted, bright print that was better for me.

These choices make my jeans and sweatshirt work for me and my style instead of just working for the trendy moment.

The same goes for my sneakers. I like the look of Sambas, but personally, I prefer something less flat. When I saw there was a version with a bit more of a platform, in a color combination that I loved, I knew they were for me.

Outfit 6 (Medium): Bows and Scandi Pants

Now, we’re dipping our toes a bit more into a viral type of look, through a trendy piece. I’m talking about Scandi pants.

You’ve seen this outfit: a relaxed, loose-fitted pair of pants (usually in powder blue), a white tank top or shirt, and an oversized shirt or jacket. Those *almost* pajama pants are called Scandi pants.

Trends 101 Outfit #6: Orange bow Scandi pants, white button down, white baby tee, white sneakersTrends 101 Outfit #6: Orange bow Scandi pants, white button down, white baby tee, white sneakers

To create this outfit, I wore a white baby tee and loose-fitted, striped pants. The pants have bow details on the sides, and they’re orange and white. Then I added an oversized, white button-down shirt instead of a jacket. Finally, white sneakers kept everything comfortable and casual.

Just as I said earlier, you need to find a version of the trend that works for you.

For instance, I saw those pants everywhere, but I didn’t love the blue. Then I found this orange set (yes, it is a set with the tie-up blouse), and the color and details made it more interesting and fun for me.

FYI, this is an easy trend to try without shopping for anything. You just need a pair of elasticated, loose-fitting pants. I’d recommend borrowing a pair or using ones you already have, even if they’re pajamas, just to see how much you actually like them before you buy.

    Outfit 7 (Difficult): Office Siren

Now, let’s tackle aesthetics. They can go just as viral as a particular color or item.

One such example is being called Office Siren. (Think Gisele Bundchen in The Devil Wears Prada.) Or just think of office-wear that you probably cannot wear to an actual office, but you can wear on girl’s night or date night.

To be honest, Office Siren doesn’t fit my personal style at all. I’m more of a colorful, loose-fit, comfort-first type. And this aesthetic is about form-fitting, sexier, dark neutrals.

Nonetheless, I gave it a shot.

Trends 101 Outfit #7 Office Siren Look: Black leather mini skirt, white cropped button-down shirt, grey blazer, white socks, black velvet pumps, glasses.Trends 101 Outfit #7 Office Siren Look: Black leather mini skirt, white cropped button-down shirt, grey blazer, white socks, black velvet pumps, glasses.

For my take on Office Siren, I started with a white cropped button-down shirt. Then, I paired it with a black leather mini. Important colors for an Office Siren look are charcoal or dark grey. So, to bring that in, I threw on a grey blazer.

For this aesthetic, the magic is in the details. I wore white socks with black velvet pumps. Then, I did my hair up and put in hair sticks. Finally, I used my glasses as a finishing touch.

First off, this outfit isn’t perfect, I know. But when you see it, you know exactly what inspired it.

Creating a look like this is a good way to decide whether an aesthetic fits you or if you just want to play with it. (No problem with that, it just helps to know!) It also helps you deduce what about that aesthetic calls to you. For some, it might be the makeup or the accessories. To others, the actual clothing items.

The thing with aesthetics is that you might feel you have to get all those new items to create that look and see what entices you about it. But you don’t.

Aesthetics are more of an idea than a particular look. So, you can totally emulate that vibe with things you have, making slight adjustments here and there.

    Outfit 8 (Difficult): Costal Cowgirl

Beyonce is going Western, and so are we. Or at least, a good chunk of people are.

Costal Cowgirl is a toned-down version of the cowgirl aesthetic. There are lots of loose-fitting cotton dresses and cowboy boots, with a white and blue color scheme. Hats are optional.

This one is fun to me, but it’s not very close to my personal style. Which, again, makes it perfect as an example for our purposes.

Trends 101 Outfit #8 Costal Cowgirl Look: White shirt dress, denim vest, brown riding boots, brown beltTrends 101 Outfit #8 Costal Cowgirl Look: White shirt dress, denim vest, brown riding boots, brown belt

To test out the Costal Cowgirl aesthetic, I started with a white shirt dress. It comes with a matching white cotton belt, but I switched it with a brown leather belt with a bigger buckle. Then, I layered on a denim vest.

Finally, I chose brown riding boots to match the belt. I do have a few pairs of cowboy boots, but they’re silver and pink, and I don’t think they’d match the aesthetic as much.

I think, out of most popular aesthetics right now, Costal Cowgirl might be the easiest to try out. It’s made up of classic or basic items we all have, like denim skirts, jeans, and white shirts.

The only item you might need to borrow are the boots, but I do believe that even a pair of knee-high boots will do the trick just fine.

    Outfit 9 (Difficult): Coquette

Finally, let’s tackle the one style that keeps coming back: The Coquette aesthetic.

Coquette is all about pink, ballet, pearls, ribbons, and lace. It’s an ultra-feminine, girly type of look.

Out of the three aesthetics I covered, this one is probably the easiest one for me since Coquette can go really camp with exaggerated silhouettes and maximalist accessories.

Let’s make it a bit more wearable and day-to-day.

Trends 101 Outfit #9 Coquette Look: Red and white baby doll dress, white socks, red velvet Mary Jane flats, pearl necklace.Trends 101 Outfit #9 Coquette Look: Red and white baby doll dress, white socks, red velvet Mary Jane flats, pearl necklace.

First, I wore a red and white baby doll dress. The dress’s straps can be tied into bows, and it has a lovely lace detail on the skirt. Then, I added white socks with the red velvet Mary Jane flats from the first look. Finally, I accessorized with a pearl necklace and a white lace bow.

I think Coquette encompasses quite a few trends, so it explains how it has managed to stay in our focus for longer than expected. For instance, it includes bows, romantic silhouettes and fabrics, ballet flats, and mary-janes. Plus, pink and red have become the colors of the year (even more so than Peach Fuzz).

I do think that Coquette is easy to emulate with just color and fit; you don’t need to buy a specific dress or blouse to try it out!

    Final Thoughts

Trends are tricky. For more than one reason, I don’t recommend buying trendy pieces. Instead, always try to emulate them first with what you already have. After all, keeping up with the trend cycle can get really expensive, and you might end up with a closet full of clothes that don’t work for you.

But trends are also fun and, most of the time, incredibly tempting. I love to see what’s trending and use it as inspiration to play with my clothes.

I’ve realized that observing the trends for a bit more time before buying anything has helped me decide what is just a shiny new thing and what is something that will work with my closet and personal style.

So whenever you see a trend that excites you, try to emulate it with things you have, or borrow it. Then, take a breather and, while doing so, look at what you have and think of different outfit combinations that you could do with that trend and your clothes.

If, by then, you’re still thinking of it and you have at least 6 different outfits in mind, then you’ll be sure it is a trend that works for you. That’s the key to wearing a trend instead of being controlled by trends.

How to Freshen Up Your Closet Main Image

Let’s be real — these are tough financial times for most of us, especially as college students. As much as we love to shop, the no-spend movement is gaining momentum for a reason!

Today, I’m here to inspire you to update your style without buying new clothes. (I promise it’s possible.)

Read on for all of my tips and tricks!

Are You in a Style Rut?

We all know that feeling. That “I don’t have anything to wear” feeling, standing in front of a closet with clothes that aren’t inspiring anymore.

A style rut is as common as it is frustrating.

We’ve all been there, and this sentiment is usually met with the classic, “But your closet is full of clothes!”

We know we have clothes. That is not the issue. Styling these items into an outfit that we love and feel comfortable in is.

Reasons for a style rut vary, but at the center is almost always a sense of boredom, of feeling like you’ve tried all possible combinations. And that rut makes us feel uncomfortable in our once beloved and trusted items.

What do we usually do to fix it? We shop.

We bring in a new, shiny item that brings everything back to life with its newness.

    It works for a while.

Then, we’re standing in front of our closet again, wondering what to wear. Shopping didn’t help and now our wallets are lighter with no progress.

So, what else can we do to fix it — without spending money?

How to Freshen Up Your Closet: Tips, Tricks, & Hacks.

Before I get into the tips, let me clear something up. You do not need to determine why you’re in a rut to start.

Most of the time, we get stuck on the why and end up even more frustrated. Get it out of your mind for now; that part comes at the end of this post.

Now, here are some easy tips and hacks on how to bring your closet back to life (and figure out your rut in the process):

    • Accessorizing can make or break an outfit. So, focus on those details while wearing one of your most worn looks. What accessory can you add or switch up? Maybe add something colorful, shiny, or patterned. Switch your usual shoes for a more stylized or bright pair.
    • Play with your hairstyle. We all have that one hairstyle we wear almost every day. You could try experimenting with your hairstyle and accessories. Maybe add a ribbon or sleek gel, or just change the way you part your hair.
    • Switch up your makeup. Just like our hair, we usually have one makeup look we always return to. Why not try a red lipstick instead of your usual nude or mauve? Or try a fun new makeup trend?
    • Layer it up. Again, layers are your greatest to bring an item back to life. Or two. Try layering two pieces that you love but feel a bit tired of. Maybe a tulle skirt under a silk skirt. Or layer two jackets together to give them dimension.
    • Turn it around. We all have that one piece we love but don’t wear because of a tiny detail in the front. Maybe the neckline is too deep or too modest, or it has a lot of details on the front that are tricky to pair with other things. Why not turn it around and wear it backward?

How to Freshen Up Your Closet: A Fashion Guide

    Accessorize, Easy – Outfit #1

    Let’s start with something easy.

While I love a good colorful outfit, I have to admit that on my laziest or busiest days, this is what I’ll probably land on. A simple T-shirt and my favorite jeans.

Freshen Up Your Closet 101: White t-shirt, medium wahs jeans, white Adidas, silk scarf, navy oversized coat, black crossbody bagFreshen Up Your Closet 101: White t-shirt, medium wahs jeans, white Adidas, silk scarf, navy oversized coat, black crossbody bag

For this example, I’m wearing my favorite white cotton t-shirt. It is not too loose or fitted, so I wear it a lot like this. Then, I wore my medium-wash boyfriend jeans and did a French tuck to the t-shirt.

The outfit on the left is practical, yes. Inspired? Not so much. Makes me feel like me? Absolutely not.

Here, you can sprinkle some accessories and layers on, and it will change everything. I added a silk scarf that has different shades of blue, golden, and a bit of red. Then, since it was still cold outside, I threw on an oversized navy blazer. Finally, to give myself a bit of shape, I used a black crossbody bag.

As you can see, I just added three things and transformed one of my most worn outfits.

The best part is, nothing is new!

I borrowed the blazer from my mom’s closet (probably from the 80s), the scarf was my grandpa’s, and the bag I’ve had for years.

It is still a comfortable, practical look, but now I feel like myself and love how I look.

    Accessorize, Easy – Outfit #2

Now, let’s tackle an outfit that is a bit more put together.

These are the looks that you know you look good and are your go-to when you have to put together something *nicer* but still comfy in a rush.

For me, that would be something like this:

Freshen Up Your Closet 101: Black and white striped t shirt, pinstripe pants, faux leather biker jacket, black Converse, red earrings, red purseFreshen Up Your Closet 101: Black and white striped t shirt, pinstripe pants, faux leather biker jacket, black Converse, red earrings, red purse

I’m wearing a striped, boxy T-shirt with a pair of pinstripe, loose pants. You know I love a good layer, so I would probably wear a black biker jacket to add a different texture to the look, then finish with Converse.

I love this look. I’ve worn it countless times, but not that often anymore because I feel tired of it.

To bring it back to life, I decided to add a bit of color. For this, I switched my usual gold earrings for a pair of big red and gold drop earrings. To finish the look, I decided to carry a red purse that has an interesting shape.

It’s the same outfit, but adding color changes everything. It gives it a bit more of intention since red pops when paired with black and white.

Now, instead of a lazy choice on my part, black and white becomes the perfect backdrop for a statement piece like this purse.

Play With Your Hair, Medium – Outfit #3

Matching sets are great and easy to just wear. The problem is wearing them repeatedly without feeling tired of the exact same combo every time you wear them.

I have a couple of beloved sets, but my absolute favorite is this one:

Freshen Up Your Closet 101: Green set of loose shirt and pants, white Adidas, space buns, green hair clips, green earringsFreshen Up Your Closet 101: Green set of loose shirt and pants, white Adidas, space buns, green hair clips, green earrings

If you’ve been reading my posts for a while now, then you probably recognize this green set. It is a green shirt with a high neckline and loose-fit pants.

When styling this set, I usually go one of two ways for shoes: my Adidas Stan Smiths or a pair of off-white squared booties. Today, I went with the white and green Stan Smith Adidas.

The look on the left is very comfortable, I would wear this any day and call it a day.

Because I wear this when I’m uninspired or in a rush, I don’t do my hair with it that often.

So, to upgrade this outfit, I decided to do some space buns. And to add a bit more fun, I changed my usual gold earrings for a pair of green geometric ones.

These were very small changes, but they transformed the outfit.

Again, this attention to detail gives the look of intentionality. I’m still comfortable, but I don’t feel tired of the set like I did before.

If you have a set that you love, like me, but feel a bit tired of it, think of it as a blank canvas to add to or to play with your hair or accessories.

Play With your Makeup, Medium – Outfit #4

Now we have a very popular outfit combo that is a staple in everyone’s closet: A white button-up, jeans, and a black coat or jacket.

Freshen Up Your Closet 101: White button up shirt, black suede coat, medium wash jeans, white sneakers, red ribbon, half ponytail, red lipstickFreshen Up Your Closet 101: White button up shirt, black suede coat, medium wash jeans, white sneakers, red ribbon, half ponytail, red lipstick

My version of this combo looks something like this. I’m wearing a white button-up shirt tucked into some loose-fit, high-waisted jeans. Then, I layered on a black suede coat for a bit of texture. I finished with my white Nikes.

Great look, I wear it, or a version of this, a lot. Especially if I’m going to the office.

Again, I just need more color or pizzazz to spice this up.

First, I styled my hair in a half ponytail and added a red ribbon. Then, I added more blush and highlighter to my cheeks and used a glittery eyeshadow. Finally, I switched my everyday mauve lipstick to red lipstick.

Hair and makeup are everything you need to change your outfit sometimes. They’re as important as choosing the right purse or shoes.

Remember that your face and hair are the first things we see in the mirror, so if you feel tired of how you look, try spicing up your makeup or hair first.

Layer it Up, Difficult – Outfit #5

Another common outfit combo we might all share is something like this, namely a striped button-up with jeans and boots.

Freshen Up Your Closet 101: Blue striped shirt, black denim jacket, black denim jeans, black platform bootsFreshen Up Your Closet 101: Blue striped shirt, black denim jacket, black denim jeans, black platform boots

I wear something like this when I want to give off that effortless, cool look.

On the left, I’m wearing a blue and white striped button-up shirt tucked halfway into a pair of black, wide-leg jeans. For shoes, I went with black platform Chelsea boots. If I’m going for effortless, I’m for sure putting my hair up with a hair clip.

I used to love this outfit. It made me feel exactly how I wanted: effortless, cool, chic. Now, I just feel tired and uninspired.

How did I change that for the outfit on the right? The art of layering.

For this example, I untucked the shirt and unbuttoned it a bit. Then, I threw on a black denim jacket and buttoned it up. I popped the collar of the shirt and pulled the shirt’s cuffs over the cuffs of the jacket.

Can you see how one item can change everything?

The little peeks of the shirt under the jacket make this look so cool and new. Especially since we don’t usually button up jackets like this, you could also switch the shirt with the jacket and make it a monochromatic denim look.

(For more details on how to layer like a pro, read my article on it here.)

Layer it Up, Difficult – Outfit #6

Again, we all have that one dress.

It’s the one that checks all your boxes: fits perfectly, goes with everything, and is 100% your style. You’ve probably had it for years.

And now, you feel like you’ve worn it too much and have exhausted all possible combinations. Me, too.

Freshen Up Your Closet 101: Black and white floral midi dress, animal print midi dress, brown crossbody bag, black sock bootiesFreshen Up Your Closet 101: Black and white floral midi dress, animal print midi dress, brown crossbody bag, black sock booties

In my closet, that item is this one.

Again, if you’ve been reading my articles for a while, you’ll probably recognize it. I’m wearing my lovely black and white floral midi dress.

I wear this piece year-round, with booties and sneakers, casually or dressed up. This time, I’m wearing it with a pair of black sock booties.

How do I bring it back to life after wearing it non-stop for four or five years? Layer it with a recent favorite, of course!

I love a good mix of patterns, so I layered a leopard print dress under the floral one. Then, I added a brown crossbody bag to bring in more of the leopard print’s color palette.

The mock neck of the leopard print dress, longer sleeves, and skirt are the perfect length for a peek-a-boo moment. Since both dress palettes are neutral and share black, they work together.

I know this is not a combination for everyone. But I love it. I think it’s really fun and playful without being too loud.

You can try something similar with polka dots and stripes, for example. Or a big floral print layered with a smaller one.

(For more details on how to mix patterns, read our article on it here.)

Turn it Around, Difficult – Outfit #7

Now, let’s cover those items that are *almost* perfect. They would be if it weren’t for the neckline or details on the front.

Or maybe you just feel tired of how your piece looks.

Freshen Up Your Closet 101: Red knit dress, striped button up shirt, black suede coat, red booties, white sneakersFreshen Up Your Closet 101: Red knit dress, striped button up shirt, black suede coat, red booties, white sneakers

For me, those items usually come in the form of a V-neck. I love the idea of a V-neck, but it doesn’t suit me very well. Since I have a small chest, I feel like V-necks don’t fall where they’re supposed to, and they just look awkward on me.

One example is this beautiful red knit v-neck dress.

This piece is comfortable, and I usually wear it like this, with just a pair of white sneakers. Or I layer it with a sweater. Because it already has buttons on the front, I don’t love how it looks with a button-up shirt.

To solve both these problems, I just turned it around. Now, I have a higher neckline and a cleaner look to work with in front.

The dress’s new high neck is perfect for pairing with a striped button-up shirt. Then, to tie in with the stripes, I layered on a black suede coat. Finally, I switched the sneakers with red booties to continue the red theme.

Wearing items backward can really open up the possibilities of your closet. I love a deep-V in the back, so this is a hack I use often.

A lot of you might be wondering whether the buttons on the back look weird, but I feel like they’re an interesting detail to have in the back while having a cleaner, simpler look in the front.

Turn it Around, Difficult – Outfit #8

For my final example, I’ll tackle one more challenging item for me: wrap dresses.

Again, I love the *idea* of them, but they usually don’t fit me right. I have the same issue that I have with the V-neck items: they usually don’t wrap where they should, so I have to pin them where I need.

Freshen Up Your Closet 101: Navy blue and red floral wrap dress, red purse, black purse, red booties, black sock booties, red tightsFreshen Up Your Closet 101: Navy blue and red floral wrap dress, red purse, black purse, red booties, black sock booties, red tights

This gorgeous navy and red floral wrap dress is a prime example. Since it is so pretty, I try to make it the star of the show and keep my shoes and accessories toned down. For example, I would normally wear it with black sock booties and a black purse.

I love this dress, so I do like to wear it, but when I do, I’m never 100% comfortable with the neckline and where the ties end.

To fix this, I wore it backward.

I love how the open back looks; I feel like it brings a sexier vibe to the look. Then, I decided to lean into the color, added a pair of red tights, and switched the black shoes for a pair of red booties. Finally, I swapped the black purse for a red purse to just really make this a colorful outfit.

Again, a tiny detail changed my outlook on this item. I’ve never worn it like this before, and I cannot believe it has never occurred to me. Wearing it backward opened up my creativity and made me feel excited to wear it.

    Final Thoughts

A style rut can be challenging. I get it. I’ve been through it countless times.

Maybe you are having a hard time in school or work, your personal style has changed so you feel disconnected from your wardrobe, your closet doesn’t match your lifestyle anymore, or your body might be changing.

Personally, I’ve gone through all those reasons at least once in my life.

The latest one (style rut related to body changes) happened for me a couple of months ago.

Before I realized what it was, I tried shopping for new things. And they didn’t work like I expected. I was frustrated and a bit sad because I couldn’t understand what was going on. I loved my clothes, the colors, the patterns. But I just couldn’t make them look like I wanted.

Then, I tried all the styling tips and hacks above instead of shopping, just to feel inspired.

Finally, I realized I was feeling this way because my body has been changing and that made the clothes fit differently. It was such a relief, because after making it work with what I had, I knew what I had to do.

Now, I could donate the things I was sure didn’t work for me anymore, repurpose items where I loved the fabrics but not the fit, and make a list of the items I needed to re-buy in the correct size.

As I’ve been repeating through this post, it’s not necessarily that we need to add new clothes, or figure out why you’re in a rut right out of the gate. The most important thing to do is to change how you look at the items you already have.

I promise that if you try freshening up your closet with these tips before getting rid of things or shopping for more, it will help you understand your personal style a lot more.

Give it a shot and let me know how it goes!

7 Outfit Formulas I’ll Never Wear Again (and 7 I’m Wearing on Repeat)

    [ad_1]

I’ve worn a lot of outfits in my lifetime and tried on even more. There are a few that I’ve worn some variation of hundreds of times and will probably continue to wear for decades to come. At the same time, there are many that, despite my trying to make them work countless times, just weren’t worth a second go. That, or they were worn for years but simply no longer match my sense of style or the ways that fashion’s evolved. The more outfits you wear, the more you learn about what you like—and in turn don’t like.

Since entering into the new year, I’ve really cracked down on those fashion combinations that just don’t fit in with my style and/or current trends anymore, deciding to finally cut them off instead of holding out hope that they’ll make their way back into my good graces. In total, I’ve narrowed down my eliminations to seven full outfits, from skirt and dress looks to denim ones. Scroll down to see which ones I’m on the outs with and which will remain in my rotation indefinitely.

  • I Love a Dainty Watch, But I Tried On This Men's Style, and Now I'm Obsessed

I Love a Dainty Watch, But I Tried On This Men's Style, and Now I'm Obsessed

    [ad_1]

The fashion world is currently enamored with watches, especially ones designed for and worn by women. Instagram is loaded with them, showcased on wrists and stacked alongside sculptural bracelets or in a decorative box to show off a growing collection. In a retail space once dominated by men, women are embracing these meticulously crafted and categorically luxurious investment items with open arms.

In the past, celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez dabbled in larger timepieces, but this time around, most of the watches that are trending among women are rather dainty in size. Think smaller Tanks and Baignoires and Lady Datejusts.  While I am nothing if not smitten with all three of the aforementioned styles, I’m also someone who spent her early 20s in a men’s Seiko stolen from her father, which is why I’ve always had a soft spot for bigger, more substantial timepieces when time is taken to choose the right one and, of course, it is styled just right.

One trick to styling a men’s watch is to stick with cases that are 40 millimeters or below. Anything larger than that tends to be overly showy, a trait that’s best avoided, especially for an everyday watch. (Luxury watches are expensive and sought after, so you don’t want to draw an abundance of attention to yours. In 2022, nearly 7000 Rolexes were reported stolen or missing, according to data from The Watch Register.) I also prefer to go for classic color options and minimal designs that can be dressed up or down and will fit seamlessly with my existing jewelry collection and wardrobe.

The $15 Trend That In-the-Know Fashion People Are Wearing With *Everything*

If you’re simultaneously obsessed with the latest micro-trends and too intimidated to test them out, you’ve come to the right place. This is Ways to Wear, a monthly series where editor Eliza Huber offers a dose of outfit inspiration focused on current trends that feel intriguing yet overwhelming at the same time. Consider it your guide to actually wearing the coolest items of the moment, no matter how puzzling they might appear at first.

Even the chicest outfits can fall flat sometimes if they’re missing a certain level of oomf. Everything about them can be perfect, from the fit to the color combinations and so on, but without that finishing touch that ties it all together, the sartorial spark will never light. And right now, the easiest and most cost-effective way to fire up your outfits is with hosiery. Yes, I said hosiery, and no, I don’t mean pantyhose.

From red and burgundy tights to knee-high sheer socks, the world of hosiery is one full of possibilities. And of all the leg décor that’s trending among fashion people this year, the style making the most significant impact by far is fishnets. Once considered tacky and more than a touch costumey, in recent seasons, the latticed tights have received a dressed-up makeover, with brands such as Gucci, Tory Burch, and Victoria Beckham pairing them with elegant dresses and separates, adding a touch of intrigue to every combination. They balance out any outfit, ensuring that no ensemble ever risks being called boring.

If you’re simultaneously obsessed with the latest micro-trends and too intimidated to test them out, you’ve come to the right place. This is Ways to Wear, a monthly series where editor Eliza Huber offers a dose of outfit inspiration centered around current trends that feel intriguing yet overwhelming at the same time. Consider it your guide to actually wearing the coolest items of the moment, no matter how puzzling they might appear at first.

Jeans for fall? Groundbreaking. Every time September rolls around, we all run to grab our denim that’s been gathering dust in the heat of summer, replaced by cutoffs (or, if you’re me, hot pants). This year, I’ve found myself only strolling over to my jeans, not sprinting like usual. Instead, I’ve been grabbing for another pant silhouette: track pants.

Following sightings in collections by Wales Bonner, Tibi, Miu Miu, and more designers that are all bringing a sense of chicness and stylization to the sporty aesthetic, track pants are quickly becoming the bottoms to wear when jeans just won’t cut it. They’re best when paired with unexpected tops and footwear, and the key to styling your pairs is doing so in an entirely non-fitness fashion and acting as if they were any other trousers that you’d style alongside kitten heels, statement handbags, and tops that don’t include a built-in sports bra.

To help in the styling department, find a handful of ways to wear fashion’s new favorite denim replacement below.

Skirts Are Top of Mind for Fall—6 Ways I’m Styling Them This Season

    [ad_1]

If there is one fashion item I am seeing around New York, on my Instagram feed, and on the runways, it’s great skirts. I’ve come to the conclusion that the fashion crowd has decided this fall is going to be the season of skirts. Miniskirts, denim skirts, and column skirts are all fair game. Once you get your hands on the skirt of your dreams, the question is how you are going to style it. After all, a skirt is just a skirt without all of the rest of the pieces working in harmony to turn that skirt into a full-on look. After combing through tons of styling inspiration and studying the feeds of all of my favorite fashion influencers, I came up with six different ways to style skirts for fall that are so chic I almost didn’t want to share. But gatekeeping isn’t really my style.

  • Selena Gomez Wore the Prada-Approved Styling Trick That Makes Every Look Chicer

Selena Gomez Wore the Prada-Approved Styling Trick That Makes Every Look Chicer

    [ad_1]

Since Paris Fashion Week is just around the corner, it should come as no surprise that most of the chicest celebrities are either already unpacked and wandering around the City of Lights or will be very soon. One such A-lister is Selena Gomez, whose IG stories have been blowing up with show-stopping outfits courtesy of her new stylist Erin Walsh, including thigh-high, patent leather stiletto boots paired with an Alaïa poplin minidress as well as a long-sleeve leopard-print maxi. But of all the looks the Rare Beauty founder’s debuted thus far on her Paris trip, the one I’m most interested in is by far her most paired back of the bunch.

On Sunday, Gomez was spotted leaving the Hôtel Plaza Athénée on her way to an event at the Bulgari Hôtel wearing a gray blazer-and-capris set with a white corset and matching GCDS handbag, baby-blue Paris Texas heels, and a blue poplin shirt with the collar perfectly popped and peaking out from underneath her tailored outerwear. To top off the evening’s ensemble, she added gold hoop earrings and a cocktail ring from Jennifer Fisher.

Surprisingly enough, it wasn’t the on-trend capris or the chic color pairing that caught my eye about the look, though both were certainly note-worthy. Rather, what I noticed immediately about it was the peek-a-boo collar, a styling trick that I first saw rise up at Prada’s fall/winter 2023 show and then again outside of the Italian brand’s spring/summer 2024 show in Milan last week. Small but extremely impactful, the simple unveiling of a statement collar from underneath a blazer or coat made her outfit tenfold more dynamic and interesting.

  • The Newest Dress Trend? Wearing Two At Once

The Newest Dress Trend? Wearing Two At Once

    [ad_1]

Given how popular dresses are and have been throughout history, genuinely new trends don’t come around all that often. Even the really shocking ones, from completely sheer maxis to the tiniest micro-minis, aren’t so much new as just risqué. So when one comes along that isn’t just a recycled fad from a past decade, it’s a big deal, one that I, as a fashion editor that looks at clothes all day long, don’t take lightly.

With that, you can imagine my excitement when Tory Burch‘s spring/summer 2023 runway show took place during NYFW, displaying a handful of looks that didn’t just include one inventive dress, but two, styled together in a completely fresh manner that I couldn’t wait to copy. Specifically, the NY-based designer showcased sculpted, sleeveless minidresses layered on top of longer, slip-like and sometimes sheer dresses (and skirts), adding dimension to the ensemble with little to no effort. In other looks, she layered see-through mesh maxis on top of metallic dresses of the same length, allowing the below pieces to shine from below but in a mellow, muted manner, thanks to the translucent fabric on top. Genius.

Now that the collection is available to shop, many online have gravitated towards the double-dress trend that Burch debuted on the runway, with others on Instagram coming up with even more inventive methods for wearing two dresses at once, adding a voluminous slip dress under a bias-cut one for increased shape or doubling up on clashing-colored dresses to create eye-catching contrasts. Below, see all the ways that fashion’s finest are seeing double in the dress department in 2023.

  • Your Favorite Hoodie Is “Fashion” Now—4 Runway Looks That Prove It

Your Favorite Hoodie Is “Fashion” Now—4 Runway Looks That Prove It

    [ad_1]

If you’re simultaneously obsessed with the latest micro-trends and too intimidated to test them out, you’ve come to the right place. This is Ways to Wear, a monthly series where editor Eliza Huber offers a dose of outfit inspiration centered around current trends that feel intriguing yet overwhelming at the same time. Consider it your guide to actually wearing the coolest items of the moment, no matter how puzzling they might appear at first.

Time and again, Miuccia Prada arrives at fashion month with a wealth of new ideas, both for the family business Prada and the brand she herself created, Miu Miu, in 1993. The fall/winter 2023 season was no different. This time around at Miu Miu, Prada’s collection seemed to zero in on the beauty in imperfection, showcasing models looking intentionally frazzled while dressed in pieces that aren’t usually considered chic or “fashion,” like leggings, sweater sets, and most, significantly, hoodies, which are quickly becoming one of the most talked-about trends of the moment

“Through examination and study, clothes are shifted both in structure and their placement on the body,” a press release from the show reads. “Familiar items—twinsets, knee-length skirts, hooded sweatshirts—move around the figure, afforded different strengths and fragilities through their fabrication.” In more words, Prada was able to breathe new life into pieces that have long been overlooked through high-quality construction, interesting proportions, and intentional styling.

As usual, the designer tapped stylist Lotta Volkova to demonstrate the coolest ways to wear the collection’s offerings, putting simple gray hoodies underneath leather and herringbone peacoats and on top of buttoned-up cashmere cardigans and turtlenecks. With them, some models wore soft leggings and sneakers, and others skipped pants altogether, donning just briefs, tights, and open-toe heels for a more lustrous take on the basic layering piece. From the show, one could easily take away that the possibilities are endless when it comes to wearing hooded sweatshirts in 2023. Then again, everything looks better on the runway, especially when it’s located at the beautiful Palais d’Iéna in Paris. Bringing them off the runway and into the real world is the truest test, which is why I decided to tackle the budding hoodie trend for my latest installment of Ways to Wear

Below, discover my takes on four hoodie-clad looks from Miu Miu’s F/W 23 show and shop the basic that’s gearing up for total domination.

As someone who’s spent her fair share of money on of-the-moment fashion items, there’s nothing better than a trend that can be re-created entirely with items that already live in your closet. And unless you live somewhere that never dips below 90ºF, I’m pretty sure you own at least one sweater that can, with little effort, be tied around your shoulders in the kind of laissez-faire manner that’s going viral on Instagram in 2023.

Whether it’s worn with activewear to give your post-Pilates ensemble a stylish touch or another knit for a modernized take on the sweater set, the sweater-around-the-shoulders look is a huge hit this year. And for good reason since lazy dressing is having a moment right now, and nothing’s lazier than tossing your favorite knit around your neck as opposed to actually putting it on. Plus, since most of us already own about a million different sweaters (oh sorry, is that just me?), there’s no trekking to the store required. *Pauses for lazy dressers to sigh in relief.*

Since opening the first brick-and-mortar location in 1999, elysewalker has become one of the most sought-after purveyors of premium curated apparel, jewelry and accessories — with a focus on head-to-toe styling, guided discovery and true personalization.  With the launch of the new e-commerce platform, the company will expand on its loyal following and welcome a broader national audience to the unique elysewalker experience.

“As I looked at what was out there in the luxury online world, I had an overwhelming sense of product overload and ‘personalization’ technologies that feel anything but. The elysewalker customer appreciates a more simplified and intimate approach, which has made us such a destination over the last 22+ years,” explains founder, owner and CEO Elyse Walker.

Since its inception, the complimentary styling program at elysewalker has delivered personalized, elevated, fashion-forward looks directly to the client, building deep and loyal client relationships as a result.

To bring its successful personal styling services to life in the digital arena, elysewalker has developed exclusive technology that enables clients to connect online with one of its elysewalker stylists. Once connected, the client receives custom-created, shoppable digital look books based on their preferences and previous purchases.

elysewalker commissioned Hugo & Marie, a New York-based independent artist management firm and agency, for the creative design and development of the site — taking the personal, in-store elysewalker experience and translating that for an online audience. In keeping with the brand’s mission of championing young female talent, elysewalker selected New York-based photographer Sophie Elgort to capture the editorial launch campaign. Shot in downtown Los Angeles amongst iconic landmarks and buildings, the concept of the campaign was to capture the energy of the city while elevating the everyday experience, featuring human connections, natural interactions, and genuine moments.

With a conversational tone of voice and bold color palette, the new elysewalker.com evokes a distinct and differentiated point of view. Woven throughout the site are personal “Love Notes” from the stylists to convey a unique experience that mimics the energy of shopping in an elysewalker store. The platform will initially focus on the U.S., with plans to expand strategically to key international markets in the future.

The carefully curated catalogue of designers speaks to the strong relationships that elysewalker has forged since its inception. This is echoed in the design and voice of the site, creating a platform for new and emerging talent while still championing their signature, heritage pillar brands. At a time when best-in-class brands aspire to transcend product to be a trusted resource, create signature experiences and build a community — elysewalker continues to reinforce these elements as the foundation of the brand, and as the key to its success.
