Read the Dress Code (and Read Between the Lines)
Wedding dress codes are often written like a riddle. “Cocktail” in a July vineyard is a very different beast than “Cocktail” in a hotel ballroom in December. “Beach Formal” sounds made up because it kind of is. But once you understand the intent behind each one, you can calibrate accordingly.
Black tie? Rare for summer unless the setting is formal and the ceremony starts after dark. But if that’s the call, go lightweight and classic.
Black-tie optional just means a dark suit like navy or charcoal and a little discretion. You can play with texture or a lighter fabric here, but don’t overthink it.
Semi-formal still means a suit, but summer loosens the reins a bit. Light gray instead of charcoal. A knit tie instead of silk. Think of it as traditional office-plus.
Cocktail attire is where the fun starts. A blazer with tailored trousers? Yes. A suit with a printed shirt and no tie? Definitely. Just avoid looking like you came straight from lunch.

You could wear the most relaxed, Neapolitan-cut unstructured jacket in July, but if it’s in heavy flannel you’ll still be cooked. Summer dressing is less about silhouette than it is about fabric.
Linen gets the spotlight, and for good reason. It breathes, it drapes, it wrinkles and somehow we’ve all agreed that we don’t have to do anything about that. It doesn’t need to be white or sand-colored either. Brown linen, sage, tobacco, even black can look incredible in the right setting.
Then there’s seersucker. Once pigeonholed for the traditional Southern-gentleman, it’s had a renaissance over the last twenty years. Modern cuts, new colors, and the fact that it doesn’t need ironing make it worth another look.
A cream seersucker suit with an olive shirt is unexpected but sophisticated. It’s casual enough for a breezy waterside affair and looks rakish enough for both the coasts of New England or Amalfi.
Pattern, when used sparingly, gives the whole outfit a sense of movement.
And wool (yes, wool) can still be your friend in the heat. Tropical wool and high-twist wools like Fresco are breathable, structured, and surprisingly crisp. They resist wrinkles better than linen and look just as refined.
Cotton and blends round out the options. They’re workhorses. A cotton suit in the right shade can be dressed up or down easily and are a little more common and a lower price point. Just know they won’t breathe quite like the others.

Several designers and real estate pros were quick to point out their least-favorite smart “upgrades” in the kitchen for everyday use, and as Laura Chappetto, principal designer at Element Design Network, sums up, “Much like anywhere else in life, some tech can bring ease and convenience … but too much can be overwhelming and remain unused.”
So what’s the sweet spot? What appliances can you add to your kitchen that will actually enhance your aesthetic, simplify your life, and possibly increase your home value? I talked to design experts, Realtors (and real home cooks!) for the best kitchen upgrades you’ll regret not splurging on.
“Hands down, smart lighting is the most popular and accessible smart upgrade,” says Angelique Kreller, an interior designer with Australian brand Yabby. Sebastian Jania, owner of Ontario Property Buyers, adds that there’s great bang for your buck on this investment, since “it’s relatively inexpensive and the kitchen experience can be greatly enhanced by this. Dimming, color adjustments, scheduling, and other capabilities are available with smart lighting, which can consist of switches, fixtures, and light bulbs that can be operated via voice commands or applications,” he says.
Ariel Baverman, a top Realtor for Coldwell Banker Realty, says she puts smart bulbs in regular fixtures so she can turn on all or some of the lights in a room without even getting up. “Also, I can turn them on and off remotely or by command, meaning if my hands are full carrying things at night, I don’t have to put them down and won’t be stumbling around in the dark.”
While technically not a kitchen or cooking appliance, the washer and dryer can often be found in the kitchen due to the convenience of sharing a water line. If this is the case, having smart laundry appliances can add a lot of appeal and usefulness to its nook in the kitchen.
“The big draw on those is a remote start and being able to see if the cycle is complete,” Baverman says. “App connectivity lets you know where it is in the cycle. And if you go to work all day and don’t want your clothes to sit there wet, you can load it up in the morning and start it remotely to sync with the time you get home, then put it in the dryer immediately. Kreller confirms that preprogrammed settings can be particularly valuable for home cooks, taking the guesswork out of cooking by adjusting the temperature and time based on the dish. “It’s nice to be able to put your dish in the oven and trust it will be hot and perfectly cooked when dinnertime rolls around,” she says. Jania adds that it’s especially nice to be able to control and keep an eye on your cooking while running errands or being elsewhere.
Additionally, Baverman adds a spiritual note to the value of smart oven functionality. “Some people also like having a Sabbath feature on their wall ovens or ranges because depending on how observant you are, these settings can help you have hot food during Shabbat and other holidays where turning on and off a ‘fire’ or power is prohibited.”

If you don’t want to splurge on a high-end built-in smart oven, no worries. They come in countertop sizes, and Braverman says she “loves” hers. “They often have an air-fryer setting, and if you’re cooking for just one to two people, it’s the perfect size for my Le Creuset stoneware baking dishes for cooking or reheating.” She’s used the programs for chicken, fish, steaks, burgers, cookies, and mini pizzas, yet is impressed that “there are still dozens of settings I haven’t even yet explored on it, even though I’ve had it for years!”

“Anything with a timer to delay start is really great, especially for people who can prep the meal ahead of time like an in-appliance mise en place,” Baverman says. And best of all, they’re useful investments you can take with you into any home.

You can program micro computerized rice cookers to start cooking or steaming your meal to be ready at a specific time, and digital pressure cookers cover nearly any kind of cooking. “There’s nothing better than setting things up in a cooking appliance so that it starts later in the day, and I can come home to a freshly cooked meal,” she says.
Some of us can’t go without our morning joe, and programmable coffee makers have been around for quite some time. Kreller enjoys the freedom of being able to have fresh-brewed coffee “before you even step into the kitchen,” and advanced technology has made it possible to go far beyond your old-school drip. For instance, different models like the KitchenAid KF8 fully automated espresso machine or the Spinn coffee maker can make espresso, Americanos, cappuccinos, cold brew, and a medley of other barista-level concoctions using centrifugal brewing tech via one tap, or even directly from an app.
Making Your Kitchen “Smarter”
Other than lighting swaps, some of the brightest “smart” choices you can make for your kitchen are ones you can take with you, making them a doubly beneficial investment. For big buys, smart ovens might be the only major built-in kitchen appliance worth splurging on, unless your washer and dryer are also located in the kitchen and you plan on leaving them behind, according to the pros. Either way, the most important thing to keep in mind is how often you plan to use the features these appliances offer to justify the upgrade.

Allen and Rae tried a few different options before ultimately pairing the curve-hugging skirt with a signature gray Thom Browne corset that cinched Rae into an hourglass shape, and a strand of Mikimoto pearls, bringing new meaning to the term “office siren.” “It just felt perfect,” she says of the look. “The bag appeals to consumers looking for a piece that transitions easily between casual and formal settings,” Landyn Tedrick, Fashionphile’s site merchandising specialist, tells Refinery29. “This versatility, along with its sleek and minimalist aesthetic, has made it a favorite among our younger consumers.” (Tedrick identifies Fendi’s Baguette as “the east-west bag’s biggest competitor within the luxury resale market” as “both bags offer sleek, compact designs perfect for transitioning between day and night, and both have experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks to the revival of early 2000s fashion and celebrity endorsements.”)

The exhibit begins with looks from Powell’s earliest costume work — Caravaggio (1986), her first film, and Orlando (1993), the first feature she was nominated for — to her more recent projects like The Irishman. Some of the visual standouts include the dress that 11-year-old Kirsten Dunst wore in Interview with the Vampire and Jonathan Rhys Myers’ glam-rock looks from Velvet Goldmine that have been in and out of costume rental companies for the last 25-plus years (which Powell notes is the reason why the costumes look “a little bit worn”). The literal jewel of the room is the ballgown worn by Lily James in Disney’s 2015 live-action remake of Cinderella which required a team of 20 people, 550 hours, 10,000 Swarovski crystals, and 270 yards of fabric to make, the latter of which earned a Guinness World Record. (Powell’s work on Robert De Niro’s wardrobe in The Irishman also had a record number of costume changes, though she jokingly hesitates to take credit: “That’s a testament to [De Niro] because imagine having how many fittings he had to have?!”)
Print clashes don’t always have to be jarring, as proven by this season’s subtle statement pairings that featured strikingly similar prints. For spring/summer 2025, Marques’Almeida styled an outfit with contrasting floral prints, Burberry stacked various stripes from top to bottom and Dries Van Noten had us seeing spots in different hues. Meanwhile, Acne Studios clashed earth-toned plaids for some stylish, kaleidoscopic looks.
Though its function remains, in its current iteration, the Barn Jacket is most often used to tone down the sharp tailoring of quiet luxury, to add a down-to-earth touch, even if it comes at a sky-high price point. On the runway at Prada, for example, the jacket was styled with a knit bodysuit, red fringe skirt, and pumps. At Miu Miu, a slouchy, oversized version sat over a chunky turtleneck, a flouncy yellow midi skirt, and lace-up boots.
