On any given day, the Big Apple’s streets are filled with outfit inspiration. Right now though, there’s a whole ‘nother level of stylishness—and we have New York Fashion Week to thank for it. As hundreds of attendees convene for the fall/winter 2024 shows, they’re also serving eye-catching and trend-setting looks. Between various takes on TikTok aesthetics like mob wive and ballet-core, the influx of dresses over pants (yes it’s here to stay), and the domination of bright color dressing, it’s like NYFW is a real-life Pinterest board. And yes, we’re pinning it all.
Japan is known for many things—spectacular food, beautiful temples, high-speed trains, and a welcoming culture—but fashion certainly tops the list. So when I visited for the first time a few weeks ago, I was eager to drink up all the street style around the major cities. While all of Japan is incredibly chic, Tokyo, specifically, boasts a standout street style (it’s no surprise given it’s the biggest city with influential fashion neighborhoods like Shibuya and Harajuku). It’s also a haven for vintage shopping, with entire streets lined with incredible stores filled with treasures from the past.
That effortlessly cool style mixed with the electric city energy against the backdrop of neon lights was exactly the style inspiration I had been craving. So needless to say I had my fashion-editor cap on while exploring Tokyo, taking note of what all the most stylish Japanese people were wearing. While Tokyo style is quite directional and people have their unique styles, I did notice a few trends many people were incorporating into their wardrobes in interesting ways. From an emerging outerwear silhouette to a statement accessory color, below are the four fashion trends I saw all over the streets of Tokyo.

If you’re like me, you may have grown up with the glamorous 2000s TV series Gossip Girl. The show followed the lives of the overly dramatic, well-dressed Upper East Side teenagers and their intertwined stories of sex and scandal, but 12-year-old me brushed past all of that to instead watch the characters on the show I admired—the teens’ fabulously opulent mothers. Lily van der Woodsen and Eleanor Waldorf aren’t just impeccably stylish, over-the-top fictional characters, though. Their real-life counterparts are some of the best dressed fashion people you need to be paying attention to. Enter the viral Ladies of Madison Avenue Instagram and TikTok pages.
Created by trained womenswear designer turned documentarian Joshua Kamei, the man-on-the-street style account has risen in the ranks to become one of the best fashion follows of 2023. Sitting at just under 250,000 Instagram followers, Kamei takes his camera and travels to the hot spots frequented by the stylish, opulent residents of New York’s fashion crowd. Think Lincoln Center performances, charity galas, and, yes, Madison Avenue.
“If someone is fabulous, they are fabulous, so I ask them questions about style, not age. It seems to have appealed to people,” Kamei tells Who What Wear, touching upon the fascination with the people he interviews and photographs. His subjects don’t just include relatively unknown women walking down the street—they also include style icons like Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Dominique Jackson, and his personal style icon, Aerin Lauder.
While you can learn about your own personal style at any age, it’s important to note the years and experience that come along with his older female subjects. “They are masters at accessorizing,” Kamei gushes. It’s not hard to understand why. A glimpse at the 600+ images Kamei has posted since starting the account shows that some of the city’s longtime residents appear to be the most well-dressed.
In the age of quiet-luxury and stealth-wealth aesthetics, it feels like Kamei’s project is a firsthand account of the anti-trend movement that’s slowly picking up steam. His thoughts on the matter, you ask? “I think it depends on the woman, but if you are wearing a Verdura necklace or Valentino or Christian Dior couture gown, I don’t think it is really that quiet,” he says. In the end, it doesn’t matter if you’re not wearing labels or wearing garments that cost as much as someone’s rent. It’s about truely personal style outside of what people expect you to wear.
“The women I tend to interview don’t really focus on trends. They wear what works for them,” Kamei explains, pointing to the colorful dresses, over-the-top accessories, and personal touches his subjects often wear on the street. “They are timeless but also appropriate to the occasion they are attending, whether it be a garden party or black-tie affair.”
No one had to search for how to wear overalls in the ’90s, when they somewhat defined the cultural zeitgeist with icons such as rapper Tupac, hip-hop artist Lauryn Hill, and R&B singer Aaliyah popularizing the trend. While the denim silhouette first gained momentum in the US during the 19th century as industrial workwear, it is today a fashion statement that has seen so many different iterations through the years. And today we’re seeing a nod back to the ’90s as street style stars opt for baggy pant legs and may even wear one, or both straps, completely undone. I think gas stations first became a source of style inspiration for me after watching Lucy Wagner (Britney Spears) sing “Bye, Bye, Bye” in her bucket hat in the back seat of a yellow convertible. The movie was “Crossroads,” released in 2002, and it was full of fashion ingenuity. Wagner later filled up the tank of her Buick in velour pants, a graphic tee, and messy ponytail — and that scene was pictured on the iconic movie poster. It’s an outfit I will always associate with gas-station fashion.

So, when WSJ named artist Josie Francis the face of the latest viral TikTok trend, gas station core, I was instantly curious about Spears’s old stomping grounds and their sartorial impact. Is gas station core still the same aesthetic I knew and loved when I was 10?
Today, gas station core is mostly about sifting through the nearly-empty racks and shelves next to your favorite candy to find hidden “gems”: affordable items you can work into a grungy look. Think oversize tees and outerwear, rugged utility clothes, and outdoorsy accessories. Francis shared an arsenal of tips for achieving peak gas station core, although she did note that you should interpret the “ugly” trend to make it your own. “Think twice about everything, give it a chance,” she told POPSUGAR. “You might see a hat and right away your brain might tell you that it’s ugly as f [DID SHE SAY FUCK?] – and it might be – but don’t walk away yet. Is it actually ugly ugly OR could you make it fun and style it in a way that would make sense? You’re probably going to think everything is heinous but it’s a mindset shift…don’t judge a gas station by its cover!”

Gas station core is the latest viral TikTok “ugly” trend that involves collecting affordable, mostly oversize pieces from the convenience shops at gas stations. Wardrobe essentials in a gas station core closet include hunting and fishing gear; big, roomy tees with a wolf print, perhaps; reflective sport sunglasses; slogan baseball caps; and utility vests.
Francis pointed me to the section of the store with miscellaneous merch and lonely hats, both hidden gems that could have been plucked from a thrift store. She maintains that she’ll never spend more than $35 on any one item, as the whole idea of gas station core is to shop on a budget. Her personal favorite gas stations to shop at are in Wisconsin off of I-94, but I ended up finding great material at my local stops in Jersey City, NJ.

On Sunday, Gomez was spotted leaving the Hôtel Plaza Athénée on her way to an event at the Bulgari Hôtel wearing a gray blazer-and-capris set with a white corset and matching GCDS handbag, baby-blue Paris Texas heels, and a blue poplin shirt with the collar perfectly popped and peaking out from underneath her tailored outerwear. Rather, what I noticed immediately about it was the peek-a-boo collar, a styling trick that I first saw rise up at Prada’s fall/winter 2023 show and then again outside of the Italian brand’s spring/summer 2024 show in Milan last week. Small but extremely impactful, the simple unveiling of a statement collar from underneath a blazer or coat made her outfit tenfold more dynamic and interesting.
