  • NBA TV rights go to ESPN, NBC and Amazon as TNT is rejected

NBA TV rights go to ESPN, NBC and Amazon as TNT is rejected

The NBA and WNBA have inked deals for where games will be aired and streamed for the next eleven years. The NBA deals run from the 2025-2026 season through the 2035-2036 season. For the WNBA, the agreement covers the 2026 through 2036 seasons.

Pro basketball has been an ESPN mainstay for years and that will continue, with the Disney-owned network remaining the primary media rights owner for both leagues. ESPN will be the exclusive home for the NBA finals for all eleven years of the new deal, as well as five out of the eleven years of the WNBA finals. The games covered by ESPN’s deal will be part of the sports network’s direct-to-consumer platform and a package of NBA and WNBA games will also be made available to stream on Disney+ in select international markets.

While the bulk of the games will go to ESPN, basketball is going to have more of a streaming presence thanks to two new partnerships. NBC and Peacock will have access to 100 NBA national games during each regular season. About 50 games will be exclusive to the Peacock streaming platform, including national Monday night games and doubleheaders. The rest of the games go to Amazon. Prime Video will be the home for 66 regular-season NBA games and 30 regular-season WNBA games each year of the deal.

Regular basketball viewers may notice that TNT Sports is not part of this lineup. The NBA’s deal with that network does not appear to be getting an extension after next year, with those games mostly going to Amazon. But the situation may yet go into overtime. TNT Sports that it matched Amazon’s offer for the games and seems to be challenging whether the NBA can switch partners. NBA’s statement that the offer from parent company Warner Bros. Discovery did not match Amazon’s, leaving them free to shop elsewhere.

The long-awaited agreements for both basketball leagues aren’t a complete slam dunk for fans. On the positive side, the next decade marks a notable shift toward streaming. After so long with the sport closely tied to broadcast shows, having access as part of your existing streaming plans is great. But on the negative side, multiple media partners mean that you’ll have to double- and triple-check where to watch each game. Major League Baseball, for instance, has games scattered across ESPN, Fox, Apple TV+, TNT Sports, and MLB Network on any given night.

  • We’re Reaching Endgame in ‘Sweet Home’ Season 3

We’re Reaching Endgame in ‘Sweet Home’ Season 3

It’s official: Sweet Home has been renewed for a third season, and Netflix is currently working on it. This isn’t surprising, but we’re all still reeling from the tragic events that went down in the last episodes of the second season.

Ui-myeong has been possessed by Sang-won, who was one of the first people to turn into monsters. Yi-kyung was transformed into a monster by Ah-yi, her daughter. Oh, and Eun-hyuk from season one, who we thought was dead? He survived, showed up in the last episode, and is clearly a monster now.

Sweet Home 3 is expected to come out on Netflix in summer 2024, on July 19, 2024.

    Sweet Home season 3 teaser

Several characters are making a comeback in the coming season, including Cha Hyun-su, who managed to survive against all odds. We can expect another season with Song Kang on screen, the actor who portrays Cha Hyun-su. Returning with him is Go Min-si, who plays the role of Lee Eun-yu.

Lee Jin-uk, who plays Pyeong Sang-wook, is also likely to return. Ui-myeong has possessed his body to enact his evil plans in the third season. Lee Do-hyun is definitely going to be back as Lee Yun-hyeok, since he was revealed to be alive in the last moments of the second season.

There are many plot points we can pick up from the last season. Eun-hyuk’s revival could mean a new villain if the special type of monster he’s become poses a threat. It would be tragic, but his character wouldn’t reemerge for nothing. Ah-yi, who turned her mother into a monster, is also a candidate for the spotlight in the third season.

Hyun-su himself is still grappling with the monster and person within him. Sweet Home season 3 will hopefully bring a clean conclusion to the conflicts and mysteries surrounding several characters.

  • Disney+ Sets August Release Date For Korean Drama ‘The Tyrant’

Disney+ Sets August Release Date For Korean Drama ‘The Tyrant’

Disney+ will release Korean drama The Tyrant on August 14, starring Jo Yoon-su, Kim Seon-ho and Cha
    Seoung-won.

The plot revolves around the development of a cutting-edge virus as part of ‘The Tyrant Project,’ directed by a group of rogue scientists working within the South Korean government. The project aspires to elevate their country’s political power on the global stage.

However, before the project can be finalized, a group of U.S. agents uncover the plan and demand that all samples be handed over. The bioweapon is stolen during a secret handover between Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies, which leads to both governments and a black ops team going to war to recover the virus.

In The Tyrant, Jo Yoon-su (True Beauty, Juvenile Justice) stars as vengeful assassin Chae Jagyeong and Cha Seoungwon (Our Blues, A Korean Odyssey) as cold-blooded mercenary Lim Sang.

Kim Seon-ho (Start-Up, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) plays the role of Director Choe, the leader of the secret Korean project, while Kim Kangwoo (Le Grand Chef, Goodbye Mr. Black) stars as U.S. intelligence agent Paul.

Running for four episodes, The Tyrant is written and directed by Park Hoonjung (New World, The Witch: Part 1).

The Tyrant is another Korean title from Disney+’s 2024 slate, following the release of originals like A Shop for Killers, Impossible Heir, Blood Free and Uncle Samsik over the last few months.

  • Stray Kids ATE Album Release Date Confirmed | The Mary Sue

Stray Kids ATE Album Release Date Confirmed | The Mary Sue

Stray Kids fans are feeling nostalgic about the teaser for the upcoming ATE album. They celebrated six years with the eight-member group earlier, on March 25, 2024. Now, Stray Kids is making a comeback with ATE.

Although they haven’t released an album in the first half of 2024, Stray Kids have been busy. We’ve seen them grace the MET Gala 2024 decked out in Tommy Hilfiger suits. They’ve also been preparing for their upcoming 2024 World Tour.

If you don’t want to miss out on the debut of ATE, you can pre-save the album on several music streaming sites like Apple Music and Spotify. Fans won’t have to wait long since ATE will be out on July 19, 2024. The tracklist for ATE hasn’t been released, and we’ll all be able to listen to the full album once it arrives.

The Hellevator reference did not go unnoticed

For a K-pop group that has been around for six years, Stray Kids have implied in this teaser video that their journey is far from over. They will be accomplishing greater feats. We’ll be seeing them stay on the Billboard charts for years to come. But the endearing tribute fans spotted was their callback to ‘Hellevator,’ the debut music video that Stray Kids first released. The MV was released years ago but is currently sitting at 114 million views on YouTube.

  • Tubi is coming to the UK

Tubi is coming to the UK

While many streamers have a global subscriber base, some have stuck to North America. Tubi, the Fox Corporation’s free ad-supported streaming service, is no longer in that second camp with the streamer announcing it will launch in the United Kingdom.

Tubi will arrive with over 20,000 TV episodes and movies on-demand, from the likes of Disney and Sony Pictures Entertainment, along with Tubi Originals. “We are launching with one of the largest and most diverse content libraries in the UK, designed to indulge viewers in everything from blockbusters to original stories to hidden gems,” Anjali Sud, CEO of Tubi, stated in the company’s announcement. “Most importantly, we’re committed to listening to what resonates with UK fans, and bringing them more and more of what they love.” Tubi will offer UK users Hollywood films, British classics, Bollywoods, Nollywoods and Arthouse Cinema — to name a few.

The streamer claims to have nearly 80 million monthly active users and clearly hopes to grow that number significantly with a UK audience. It will be available on iOS and Android smartphones, major connected TV platforms and the web.

  • 2024’s Canceled Shows, for Your Final Consideration

2024’s Canceled Shows, for Your Final Consideration

    Photo: Warner Bros Discovery

Way back in 2016, Vulture wrote of the now mostly forgotten Netflix series Bloodline that “Netflix did something it’s rarely done in its four-year history of original programming Wednesday: It canceled a show.” These days, updates on streaming series reckon with how “platforms invented cruel and unusual ways to cancel them.” Well, the great cancel-off of 2024 is officially on its way, and no show is safe. Without reputable sourcing on streaming audience numbers, there’s little way to know if your favorite piece of art content is actually a hit or just a hit with your friend group/online bubble/in-laws. So we end up with cancelations like Our Flag Means Death, which, based on the amount Taika Waititi fans talk about it, sure seemed like a hit. This Fool was canceled on February 14, which (besides Valentine’s Day) was Ash Wednesday. Time to think about your sins, execs. And now, we’re saying goodbye to Tokyo Vice (thankfully, we’ve prepared a speech ahead of time.) Below, a list of every TV show canceled so far in 2024.

Through Julia’s life and her singular joie de vivre, the series explores a pivotal time in American history – the emergence of public television as a new social institution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural evolution,” according to Warner Bros.

What’s it about? Our Flag Means Death is based (very) loosely on the true adventures of 18th-century would-be pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby),” according to Warner Bros. “After trading the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede became captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas … they found love. Now, they have to survive it.”

When was it canceled? January 9

What’s it about? After being revived from the dead (being canceled by Max) after one season by Starz, the network proceeded to cancel the show after one extra season. “Minx is set in 1970s Los Angeles and centers around Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond), an earnest young feminist who joins forces with a low-rent publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women,” according to Warner Bros.

What’s it about? The show is “based on Gene Luen Yang’s groundbreaking graphic novel that chronicles the trials and tribulations of a regular American teenager whose life is forever changed when he befriends the son of a mythological god,” Disney+ says. “This is the story of a young man’s battle for his own identity, told through family, comedy, and action-packed Kung-Fu.”

  • Why Streaming Services Keep Screwing Up Binge-Watching

Why Streaming Services Keep Screwing Up Binge-Watching

When The Bear first premiered, it was all in one fell swoop, eight feverish episodes dropped onto Hulu in June of 2022. While the show was beloved by critics, it took a while, relatively speaking, to catch on, popping up as the second most-watched show across all platforms three weeks later and the most watched program the following week. Season two, released in the same bingeable fashion at about the same time a year later, came out of the gate hot, quickly becoming the most streamed TV series in the US.

During both seasons, The Bear’s audience petered out fairly quickly, making it the equivalent of a darkly comedic shooting star. That’s typical for bingeable shows, which industry watchdogs like Parrot Analytics say typically have a “decay rate” of about eight weeks from their initial release. Shows dropped weekly, like The Acolyte or Severance, tend to stay on audience’s minds much longer, from initial release to about nine weeks after the finale hits. Seventy-five percent of the most popular shows in the US in 2023 were released weekly, and shows that come out in installments typically draw more viewers in the lull between seasons, creating fewer peaks and valleys in their viewership numbers in the long term.

Weekly releases also help keep shows in the cultural conversation longer. Just look at Fallout. Amazon Prime Video released all eight episodes of that video game adaptation at once and folks actually got so mad about it the loudest conversation about Fallout ended up being about its rollout, not the show itself.

All of which is to say: Why in the world did The Bear’s entire third season just get dumped in one go? While the show’s cast say the binge model is—as Matty Matheson, who plays Neil Fak, recently put it at a press conference—”tight,” how a series is created artistically seems to have increasingly little to do with how it reaches audiences. (For instance, Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell recently told the Los Angeles Times she had no idea Netflix was thinking of dropping the show’s latest season in two parts until after it was shot, creating for an interesting episodic flow.)

“You produce a show from a content standpoint,” says Evan Shapiro, a television producer turned professor and Substack pundit. “The scheduling of it is much more about marketing for new subscribers or for existing subscriber retention.” In other words, just because something like The Bear is excellent television that’s best viewed as an artistic whole, the team at Hulu still seems to treat it like a click-generating subscription driver. Showrunners create hoping you will finish their shows; streaming services often just care about whether or not you start them.

While FX and Hulu are certainly following the precedent set by the past two seasons, there’s a sense that the release plan for the current season—arguably The Bear’s most anticipated to date—is an exercise in foot-shooting. By rolling it out this way, the show burns fast and hot, controls the cultural conversation around Emmy nomination voting, and then crashes right after. The Bear only just started shooting the current season in February, making the turnaround for this 10-episode drop seem downright cruel to every editor, publicist, and marketing professional working behind the scenes.

  • If You Can’t Wait for the ‘My Deer Friend Nokotan’ Anime, Here’s Where You Can Read the Manga

If You Can’t Wait for the ‘My Deer Friend Nokotan’ Anime, Here’s Where You Can Read the Manga

My Deer Friend Nokotan is a comedy manga like no other. Seriously, I don’t think the power of friendship has ever been forced on a main character by a deer before.

Torako Koshi is the perfect image of a high schooler. She’s beautiful, smart, and well-rounded—practically the school’s it girl. But she’s hiding a secret that could ruin her reputation: she used to be a delinquent. Good thing nobody knows about her dark past, right? When Koshi makes the mistake of saving a human-deer hybrid named Noko, it calls her a “yankee.” How did Noko figure Koshi’s past out?

You can read the official manga of My Deer Friend Nokotan through Amazon Kindle for $8.99 per volume. Alternatively, you can also read the manga digitally through Rakuten Kobo for $9.99. Barnes & Noble sells both an eBook copy for $8.99 and a paperback copy for $12.99.

    A friendship like no other

If you’re hunting for physical copies, you can also try asking your local Walmart. You can get My Deer Friend Nokotan for as low as $10.56.

The manga is funny, but the anime trailer makes Koshi and Noko’s expressions a lot more exaggerated. If you’re looking forward to maximizing the comedy, waiting for the anime to come out on Crunchyroll might be a better option. Watch My Deer Friend Nokotan when it premieres on July 6!

  • KonoSuba Season 3 Episode 10 Release Date Confirmed | The Mary Sue

KonoSuba Season 3 Episode 10 Release Date Confirmed | The Mary Sue

We couldn’t deal with half the things Kazuma experiences on a daily basis in KonoSuba season three. Imagine being given a second chance at life only to be forced on a hero’s journey.

That’s pretty average stuff, but instead of succumbing to that, Kazuma does everything in his power to avoid it. Whenever he tries to help, things seem to get worse for his friends. Kazuma tried to help Dust save Rin from a supposedly weird noble. Kazuma and Dust thought that taking pictures in women’s underwear would distract the noble and traumatize him.

Except it was all a huge misunderstanding, and the noble apparently likes Dust. I’ll leave everything else to your imagination. We’re in for more comedic chaos in KonoSuba season three, episode 10, on June 12, 2024.

    Never watch KonoSuba without headphones

If you’re watching the last two episodes of KonoSuba, don’t forget to put headphones on if there are people around you. So many things can be taken out of context in KonoSuba, and you might get weird stares when you watch this on the subway.

Unlike other isekai shows, KonoSuba actively parodies the most absurd tropes known in the genre. Kazuma is just a simple guy who can’t be bothered to work. He’s so dedicated to living a hassle-free life that he’s practically avoiding all of Lalatina’s advances. Luckily for him this time, Lalatina’s not exactly looking to be saved or to run away. She obviously crushes on Kazuma, but she isn’t going to use him as an excuse to abandon her duties as a noblewoman.

  • ‘3 Body Problem’ Renewed By Netflix For Two More Seasons—Breaking

‘3 Body Problem’ Renewed By Netflix For Two More Seasons—Breaking

3 Body Problem has two more acts to go.

The Netflix drama about humanity’s struggle to unite in defiance of an alien invasion that’s zeroing-in on our world from light years away, has been renewed by the streamer for not one, but two more seasons—promising viewers a full conclusion to the survival struggle between cosmic civilizations.

Plans for more episodes were already underway, but a commitment to both a second and third chapter was announced by showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo at a for-your-consideration award season panel for the Television Academy on Friday evening.

3 Body Problem, which debuted in March, was the first return to large scale fantasy storytelling for Benioff and Weiss after concluding eight seasons of Game of Thrones for HBO. Woo joined the pair after serving as showrunner on 2019’s The Terror and working as a producer and writer on Manhattan and True Blood. The trio are currently working on scripts for seasons two and three of the invasion drama, based on the Remembrance of Earth’s Past series of novels by Cixin Liu.

“There are three books. There are three bodies. So we always thought three seasons made the most sense,” Weiss said. “We knew what more or less what we needed in terms of hours to tell the story the way we felt it needed to be told. And that’s what we’re going to do.”

“The very last page of Cixin Liu’s epic is one of the best last pages I’ve ever read, and it kind of destroyed me when I read it,” Benioff added. He said he and Weiss finished the last of the novels together on a flight from Osaka, Japan, to Los Angeles before committing to make the first season. “He came over to my seat and said, ‘We’re doing this, right?’ I said, ‘Yeah, we’re doin’ this.’ So, the idea that we get to go to that last page gives me great joy.”

The series favored heady philosophizing and existential hand-wringing rather than the explosions and action typical of alien attack stories, and the beings threatening the planet are never seen, communicating with inhabitants of Earth through digital simulations and inexplicable science-defying miracles. 3 Body Problem proved to be a slow burn, challenging viewers with its puzzling story but benefiting from strong word of mouth as the full scale of its story became clear. Forbes reported that the show “dominated the entire streaming industry at the end of March,” citing a Neilsen’s rating report that the show had been watched for a collective 1.79 billion minutes after only a month on the air.

Woo said it was four years of work from when they first joined forces to make the first season until its completion. He joked that the second season will be ready, “next month.”

While they don’t have firm dates to announce for when they’ll start filming and when the show might return to the air, Woo promised the second season completion “will go faster.”

  • The 8 Biggest Takeaways From Netflix’s Latest Ratings Dump

The 8 Biggest Takeaways From Netflix’s Latest Ratings Dump

    The Crown; One Piece.
    Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photos: Netflix

Another six months, another Netflix data blast — this time dumped unceremoniously in a blog post on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend. Still, more information is better than no information, and the streamer’s second “What We Watched” engagement report, compiling views between last July and December 2023, is its latest officially zoomed-out picture of how Netflix movies and TV shows are doing — despite the shortcomings of crunching the numbers in aggregate on a spreadsheet that, combined, is nearly 16,000 rows long.

The biggest movie of the back half of 2023 wasn’t a major awards contender nor a bombastic blockbuster — it was an adaptation of Leave the World Behind, which despite an apocalyptic premise often feels more like a stage play than it does a feature film. And the biggest single season of TV wasn’t buzzy awards bait or even one of a revived catalogue hit like Suits — it was an American-produced, live-action adaptation of a Japanese comic full of superpowered pirate antics and snot-nosed crying. Both were notable titles, to be sure, but it would have been hard to predict that either of them would wind up as chart-toppers.

One new wrinkle in the new report: It’s now accounting for a title’s runtime, incorporating it into a “views” stat (time spent watching divided by a title’s length). This evens the field somewhat between movies and TV shows, something that Kasey Moore, founder of the pioneering tracking site What’s on Netflix, finds useful. “Incorporating the new views metric highlights the two purposes of movies and series in my eyes,” he tells Vulture. “TV shows still suck up the majority of viewing hours, but lots of people do come in for the movies, contrary to popular belief.” Moore was also struck by the continued popularity of children’s programming on Netflix. “So much of the top 100 (views or viewing hours) are family, kids, and animated titles,” he says, noting that the most popular titles are from outside studios such as DreamWorks, Illumination, Moonbug, and Nickelodeon, “which must be a source of concern.”

Moore also noticed how the premiere of a new season of a show brings new attention to past installments of the series. “When new seasons of Sweet Magnolias and Virgin River both released, it saw meaningful bumps in those earlier seasons. You can see it, too, with Squid Game: The Challenge giving a bump to Squid Game.”

With considerations like those in mind, we’ve combed through the sheet and pulled out the eight most noteworthy highlights therein.

Maybe all you really need to engineer a global hit on Netflix is Julia Roberts and an argument for physical media. But even accounting for her star wattage, Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind, which topped the second half of the year’s film charts in just three weeks (it was released December 8), is a curious worldwide hit. (The last movie Esmail directed made less than $20,000 at the box office.) Consider the three runners-up that its 121 million views eclipsed: Gal Gadot’s blockbuster Heart of Stone (109.6 million views across more than 20 weeks), a host of family-friendly fare including Adam Sandler’s Leo (96 million views in 40 days), and the dystopian Spanish-refugee saga Nowhere (86.2 million views in over 16 weeks).

The movie that beat those movies is an anti-blockbuster that — some shocking imagery and set pieces aside — remains a mostly quiet adaptation of a mostly quiet book that never escapes the Long Island suburbs. In some ways it feels closer to The Killer or May December than a traditionally explosive title like Zack Snyder’s first Rebel Moon entry, which debuted December 21 and by the end of the year had not yet beaten longtime Netflix library title Paw Patrol: The Movie.

One Piece, based on Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga, notched 71.6 million views globally — almost 20 million more than the runner-up, Germany’s Dear Child. Netflix’s track record with live-action adaptations is spotty at best (Cowboy Bebop’s second-week viewership fell like a rock and it was swiftly canceled), but it’s still cultivated an anime fanbase with high-profile legacy acquisitions like Pokémon and Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as new simulcasts like Vinland Saga — to say nothing of the 41(!) separate batches of licensed One Piece anime episodes on the platform that added up to 50 million views globally in the second half of 2023. Those numbers are linked; the question going forward will be what Netflix can do with a Japanese title not named One Piece.

One of the first big moves Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos made on the feature-film front was signing Adam Sandler to a multi-picture deal in 2014. A decade later, that pact is still bearing fruit: Two of the Sandman’s movies — the animated Leo (96 million views) and the teen comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (60.6 million views) — ranked among the streamer’s 15 biggest films in the second half of 2023. But Sandler’s value is not just in his new material. Three other Netflix-produced movies featuring the former SNL legend (2019’s Murder Mystery and its spring 2023 sequel, as well as 2020’s Hubie Halloween) managed to draw more than 10 million views years after their releases, as did both of Sandler’s Grown Ups movies. And proving once again that critical acclaim and audience taste aren’t always in sync, some of Sandler’s more acclaimed roles didn’t do quite as well: Uncut Gems notched a relatively modest 3.1 million views during the report period, while Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) managed a mere 900,000 views. On the other hand, both did better than the critically panned Sandy Wexler (600,000 views).

Last month, a New York Times story about new Netflix film chief Dan Lin carried a rather ominous headline for fans of the streamer’s more prestige plays, warning its new strategy was “more about the audience, less about auteurs.” If that’s the case, it’s quite possible Lin could be reacting to the underwhelming performance of some of Netflix’s most acclaimed films last fall. For instance, despite near-universal raves for Colman Domingo and Rustin, the film generated a meager 2.6 million views during its first two months on the platform. The Todd Haynes–directed May December did better, but its 6.8 million views doesn’t even place it (or Rustin) among Netflix’s top 400 (that’s not a typo) movie titles during the second half of 2023.

And while the much more high-profile Maestro came out too late in the year (December 20) to get a fair read on its overall audience, Bradley Cooper’s opus never once landed in Netflix’s weekly top ten lists, and its overall audience during the last 11 days of the year — 6.7 million views — suggests that the film did not go on to become a blockbuster once its seven Oscar nominations were announced in January. By comparison, the Annette Bening/Jodi Foster team-up Nyad, with 16.3 million views (and a two-week run on Netflix’s global top-ten list in September) was a relative smash. But even it ended up with far fewer views than Love Is in the Air, a Hallmark-style rom-com from Australia (tagline: “When skies clear, hope shines through”) that tallied up an impressive 27.3 million views — and likely was produced at a fraction of the cost of those other movies.

Matt Rife and Shane Gillis might not be universally beloved by comedy critics, but they’re very popular with Netflix subscribers. Despite coming out late in the year, Rife’s November release Natural Selection generated 12.7 million views, making it one of the year’s biggest comedy specials on the streamer, while Gillis’s Beautiful Dogs wasn’t too far behind, with 12 million views (though, since it came out September 5, it had more time to build an audience). Tom Segura’s Sledgehammer, released in July, was another comedy over-performer, generating 11.8 million views.

But in another example of how much timing matters when looking at Netflix’s engagement report, consider the performance of Dave Chappelle’s last special, The Dreamer. It dropped on the very last day of 2023, giving it very little time to generate views that count toward the semi-annual rankings. It nonetheless managed a solid 2.2 million views during that 24-hour frame. But per Netflix’s weekly top-ten lists, the special would go on to amass at least 12.8 million more views during its first two full weeks on the platform, for a total of at least 15 million views — bigger than the specials from Rife and Gillis. Those numbers might explain why Netflix execs keep making deals with Chapelle, despite his fondness for making anti-trans remarks during his sets.

The sixth and final season of The Crown did not go out with a bang: It generated a modest 25.2 million views in Netflix’s new engagement report, which is slightly less than season one of Young Sheldon (26.1 million) generated, despite not being available in every Netflix territory and it not landing on Netflix U.S. until late November (it had been on the platform in smaller countries before then). To be fair, The Crown released its final season in two batches, giving its final episodes just a few weeks to amass eyeballs. But the show also disappeared from Netflix’s global top ten by early January 2024, hinting the show didn’t exactly stay on fire once the window for this engagement report closed. No doubt there will be a long tail for The Crown as some viewers finally catch up and some die-hard royalists rewatch. But the intensity of audience interest that greeted past seasons of the show definitely seemed to cool as things wrapped up.

In a sign that people really, really love Wednesday, the fall 2022 release generated a total of 98.4 million views in 2023 — including 23.9 million views just in the second half of the year. Needless to say, that’s a bigger audience than 90 percent of Netflix’s original scripted series, including ones which actually premiered during the last six months of 2023. Case in point: Big Mouth, which in its early years felt like one of the hottest shows on Netflix, amassed a surprisingly small 8.5 million views for its seventh season, which dropped in October. The fact that year-old episodes of Wednesday drew three times as many views as brand-new installments of Big Mouth probably explains why the latter show will debut its final season next year.

What’s on Netflix has helpfully added up viewing data from both of Netflix’s 2023 engagement reports, allowing for a better look at how titles performed for the full year. And while Leave the World Behind remains popular no matter how you look at it, it’s clear that for Netflix, J.Lo really is mother: Her May 2023 release The Mother ended up generating a phenomenal 153.7 million views for the full year (25.5 million of which came in the second half of 2023), making it the biggest title on the streamer last year. It was followed by Extraction 2 (151.7 million) and Murder Mystery 2 (129.7 million) as the most popular movies for all of 2023.

But once again, the weirdness of how Netflix releases data means you need to be careful in drawing conclusions about a title’s overall popularity. While Mother was the No. 1 movie of 2023 for Netflix, lots of people waited until January (or later) to catch Leave the World Behind, allowing it to eventually pass Mother on Netflix’s top-ten movies of all time list.

In terms of series, while One Piece ruled the second half of 2023, it pales next to several other releases from earlier in the year. The Night Agent, for example, snagged 99.2 million views last spring, then tacked on another 19 million last summer and fall for an annual total of 118.2 million views — by far Netflix’s biggest series last year. It’s followed by Wednesday (98.4 million for the year) and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (89.6 million). One Piece is certainly still generating views, of course, and its tally will jump once the next engagement report comes out. But it’s unlikely to catch Night Agent or even Wednesday.

  • The Mevo Core Camera System Makes Multi-Cam Streaming a Breeze

The Mevo Core Camera System Makes Multi-Cam Streaming a Breeze

Streaming video can be a big business, if a bit painful. Whether you’re playing games, making crafts, or just hanging out in a hot tub, one of the biggest streaming challenges can be finding a camera system that works for your needs. That’s what Logitech had in mind when creating the Mevo Core multi-cam system, and it’s an impressively simple solution to a modern problem.

The Mevo Core is an unassuming cube-style camera that uses a Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens system. The four sides flanking the lens each have a ¼-inch 20-thread mount, allowing you to mount it by the top, bottom, or sides. On the rear, there are two USB-C ports for charging or connecting as a wired webcam, a 3.5-mm audio output, an HDMI port, and a microSD card slot tucked behind a protective cover.

The whole system is designed to be adaptable to a wide range of shooting situations. The camera can capture 4K video locally, and stream up to 1080p video over Wi-Fi 6E, and it even has an internal rechargeable battery that can record or stream for up to six hours on a single charge. It’s a fascinating camera system that walks the line between streaming webcam and more professional mirrorless cameras used for shooting video. But it’s the software that steals the show.

    A Studio, Made Simple

The Mevo Core cameras are designed to be used in multi-cam setups—where you have multiple cameras around you for various angles—and to approximate one if you only have one camera. The Mevo Multicam app is the key that makes the whole system work. This app allows you to connect multiple cameras and feed them all to a single output for livestreaming.

    Photograph: Eric Ravenscraft

The Mevo Core cameras are shockingly easy to pair with the app. Open the app and it will automatically detect the camera and walk you through adding the camera to your Wi-Fi network. Once they’re on the network, you can connect them to the app with the touch of a button.

Once your cameras are connected, you can tap the source to swap the live output to that camera angle. In addition to the Mevo Core cameras, you can also add Mevo Start cameras, or, with a Mevo Pro subscription, you can connect any smartphone camera as another video source.

On top of this, the Mevo Multicam app lets you add picture-in-picture presets as well as graphic assets like full-screen overlays, lower-thirds, and over-the-shoulder images. The result is a makeshift live studio that can run on equipment you can easily fit into a messenger bag.

Streamers typically have to rely on apps like OBS and StreamLabs to manage video streams, and while those apps are certainly more robust, there’s a simplicity to the Mevo Multicam system that makes it incredibly easy to manage multiple camera angles while live. The app can show you all the camera feeds at once and let you quickly tap one to swap angles, adjust each one’s audio input levels, and add graphics with a tap. If that was all this system did, I’d be impressed, but then Logitech added something I would’ve wanted years ago if I’d thought to ask.

    Turning One Camera Into Many

The 4K sensor inside the Mevo Core is solid and captures decent picture quality, but its better utilized as a 1080p streaming webcam. So why the extra resolution? Well, because when you shoot with more resolution than you need, it gives you the flexibility to crop in on the image without sacrificing picture quality. It’s partly why some of our favorite cinema cameras use 6K sensors for shooting 4K content.

Usually, that’s a postproduction process, but the Mevo Multicam app makes it easy to use that flexibility for live productions. In the app, you can tap on parts of the frame to crop in on the subject and send just a portion of the videofeed to the output. This is a technique I’ve used myself when editing video essays, but this camera system brings it to live performances. You can use a wide shot, then crop into a medium shot to emphasize a line.

  • Spotify Hates Albums. Here’s How to Fix That

Spotify Hates Albums. Here’s How to Fix That

I wish there were more options here. For example, it would be great if the end of one album could result in the start of a similar album, or if I could turn the feature off for albums and on for playlists. Still, it’s nice to have the choice, and I choose to keep this off.

Listen to Multiple Albums by the Same Artist in a Row

I sometimes like to queue up albums by the same artist. There isn’t a straightforward way to do this in Spotify, but it’s not impossible. Head to the profile page for any artist, then scroll down to the Discography section. You should see a Show all link in the top right.

    Spotify via David Nield

Click this and you’ll see all albums in order. Click Play on the top one and Spotify will play through every track in every album, from most recent to oldest. You can filter out singles and EPs if you want; just click the arrow by the word All in the top-right corner and select Albums.

Again, this isn’t perfect. I’d prefer to listen to an artist’s catalog in chronological order, as opposed to starting with the most recent album and working my way backward. The only way to get that is to make a playlist, or to search for a playlist made by someone else.

Look for Playlists That Aren’t ‘For You’

    Screenshot of Spotify

    Spotify via David Nield

You might think that playlists are the same for everyone, but that’s not true. Many are built automatically by Spotify using your playback history, which, if you’re an album listener, means the playlist is crammed with a hodgepodge of tracks from whatever you’ve got on regular rotation at the moment. This can make all playlists feel the same, but there’s a trick to staying out of this rut: Look for playlists that don’t have the “Made for” marker at the top. These are public playlists curated by actual human Spotify users, not something influenced by your personal listening habits. I find this method of avoiding the algorithmic For You playlists helps me discover new music instead of just rehearing familiar tracks.

Search for Albums Without Using Your Mouse

Finding an album in Spotify using just your mouse can take multiple clicks. Everything is a lot faster if you use the keyboard shortcut Control+K on PC or Command+K on Mac. This will bring up a search bar. Just type what you want to listen to and use the up and down arrow keys to browse to a result.

    Screenshot of Spotify

    Spotify via David Nield

From here you can hit Enter to open the album, artist, or playlist page. You can also hit Shift-Enter to immediately start playing the current selection. It’s the fastest way to find and play something, albums included.

  • Philly baker to compete on American spinoff of ‘The Great British Bake Off’

Philly baker to compete on American spinoff of ‘The Great British Bake Off’

Philadelphia resident Victoria Walters traveled across the pond to compete against other amateur bakers under the famous white tent beloved by fans of “The Great British Bake Off.”

Walters, a Temple University alum, is a contestant on the upcoming second season of Roku’s “The Great American Baking Show” — a spinoff of the feel-good “Bake Off” reality competition known for its venue in London and catchphrases like, “On your marks, get set, bake!” All episodes of Season 2 will be available to stream through the Roku Channel on Friday, May 24.

In “The Great American Baking Show,” hosted by actors Casey Wilson and Zach Cherry, contestants from across the United States must compete in a series of signature baking challenges in the hopes of being crowned “America’s Best Amateur Baker.” The judging panel is made up of Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, staples of “The Great British Bake Off.”

“Totally, totally surreal,” Walters said Wednesday of meeting the judges and hosts. “Even still, I see pictures of myself with them, and I’m like, this is weird. This is an out-of-body experience. I can’t believe I was actually there. I can’t wait to watch the episodes.”

Originally from Harrisburg, Walters, 34, now lives in Philly and works as a user experience researcher for an investment company. She met her husband at Temple, where she studied international business and marketing, and they have a young son. Aside from her career, Walters has “a lot of hobbies.” She sings in an a cappella group, photographs weddings and, of course, bakes.

“I’ve been baking since I was a little kid,” said Walters, who posts her creations on Instagram. “It’s just in my DNA. My mom is a really good cook and baker, and same with my grandma. So I just come from a family where everything’s homemade.”

A huge fan of “The Great British Bake Off,” Walters first applied for the American version after a friend sent her a link on Facebook in 2020. She had to take a baking quiz and then go to New York City and show casting officials three of her best bakes. She admits that she may have stretched a few details during the casting process.

“I sort of fibbed and said that I had done lamination before,” Walters said, referring to a process of folding and rolling butter into dough to create thin layers, as seen in croissants. “So I had to laminate for the very first time.”

From there, Walters got to work on learning more about the desserts and pastries she may need to know if she was asked to be on the show — including everything from pavlova to checkerboard cakes. She spent long hours during the pandemic researching recipes and baking, and offered leftovers to Facebook users in “buy nothing” groups.

“Even when it was bad, I’d (post), ‘These macarons are terrible, does anyone want them?’” Walters said. “And people would be like, ‘What? These are the best I’ve ever had!’ and I’d be like, ‘Really?’”

Even when things weren’t going her way with the bakes, Walters’ can-do outlook allowed her to push through.

“My attitude is always just like, yeah, I could do this,” Walters said. “I knew some of the basics (of baking) at first, but what’s the worst thing you have that happens? You have some ingredients that you end up throwing in the trash? That’s the worst, but most of the time it at least tastes good. So start trying, start practicing. And who knows, you can end up on a TV show.”

In 2022, casting reached out to Walters to see if she’d like to be on the show. She couldn’t join the first season because she was pregnant and due in August when the show was filming. Despite a “really rough” pregnancy and newborn period with her son, Luca, Walters was game when she was asked again in 2023 to potentially be part of Season 2. She even brought a stroller to carry all her baked goods to the audition.

After being selected as a contestant, it was off to England for Walters, which presented its own unexpected challenges.

“We were all dealing with jet lag, different ingredients,” Walters said. “They have different dairy over there. They have different sugar; there’s like 20 different types of sugar. And none of them are the same as ours. There’s like four different types of brown sugar. Literally everything is different. It’s crazy.”

While Walters didn’t (figuratively) spoil what types of bakes she was tasked with this season, she did tease the great rapport between contestants — which led to friendships that continued after the cameras stopped rolling.

“We had a lot of fun together,” Walters said. “There are a lot of cameras, but they always do a wide shot where you get to see the middle of the room. And we would always be yelling to each other across the tent. That was really fun. And now they’re my best baking buddies. If any of us needs a recipe or has a question about something, we’re texting each other all the time.”

The first season of Roku’s “The Great American Baking Show” debuted last year, becoming the No. 1 on-demand title on the Roku Channel during its opening weekend. A previous iteration aired from 2015 to 2020 on ABC. Roku’s version has already been renewed for a third season on the platform, as well as specials featuring celebrity contestants around the holiday season, the Super Bowl and summer.

If you’re a Big Bang Theory superfan, you’ve likely been following its spin-off prequel, Young Sheldon. The coming-of-age sitcom television series continues the legacy of TBBT‘s iconic Sheldon Cooper character. After seven seasons, the prequel is coming to a close in a one-hour finale. Keep reading to learn how to watch Young Sheldon live for free to see what happens in the end.

Young Sheldon, created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro for CBS, is set from 1989 to 1994. Viewers get to watch young Sheldon grow up with his family in East Texas. The series premiered on September 25, 2017 and is set to end in a two-episode series finale on May 16, 2024. Another spin-off series is in the works, but this one will center around Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister. It’ll be called Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

The original Sheldon Cooper actor, Jim Parsons, hasn’t left TBBT universe quite yet. In fact, he narrates Young Sheldon and also serves as an executive producer on the show. He has an even bigger treat in store for fans, as he’s set to reprise his role as the lovable Sheldon Cooper in the series finale. His former TBBT co-star Mayim Bialik (played Amy Farrah Fowler) will join him to close out the show.

Regarding reprising his role as Sheldon, Parsons told PEOPLE, “I felt a slight hesitancy when they first asked, just as I thought, I don’t really want to go revisit the character,” he told PEOPLE. “But the way that they wrote it in was I thought so beautiful that it ended up being like this little extra coda or whatever to my experience with the character.” He added, “It was this gift of a second layer of losing it out in a way that I had never seen coming, and it was a real treat.”

Amazon Greenlights Sports Documentaries On Dale Earnhardt Sr., Chiefs Superfan Crime Spree & More

Amazon is diving headfirst into the world of sports documentaries with four new projects on its streaming slate, including one on Dale Earnhardt Sr. and another about a Kansas City Chiefs super fan that will cross over int0 true crime as well.

The company announced all four projects during its Upfront presentation on Tuesday.

    The documentaries are as follows:

A four-part documentary on NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Sr.; a four-part series chronicling the history of the Madden video game franchise; an anthology series about the most epic Game 7s throughout sports history; and a true-crime documentary about ChiefsAholic, the notorious Kansas City Chiefs superfan and serial bank robber.

More details about each are below.

    Untitled Earnhardt Documentary
The history of the Earnhardt family is the history of NASCAR—you can’t tell the story of one without the other—and at the center of the Earnhardt family was Dale Earnhardt Sr., the most influential figure the sport has ever known. A charismatic, working-class hero to millions of fans, Dale Sr. spent the better part of two decades as the most visible figure in stock car racing, breaking through the confines of them sport’s regional fan base to mainstream notoriety, racking up millions in endorsement deals from Coca-Cola to Wheaties, and appearing on daytime TV and late-night talk shows. From one generation to the next, racing would bring the Earnhardt family together, but it wasn’t always an easy road. Now, with unparalleled access and never before seen archival material, the Untitled Earnhardt Documentary promises a profound, revealing, and definitive account of a historic American family.

The documentary produced by Imagine Documentaries, NASCAR Studios, and Everyone Else, in association with Dirty Mo Media. The series is executive produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Sara Bernstein, and Justin Wilkes of Imagine Entertainment; Matt Summers and Tim Clark of NASCAR Studios; and TJ Martin, Dan Lindsay, and Tony Mayhoff.

    Untitled EA Madden Documentary
It’s one of the biggest video games of all time, a groundbreaking brand that became a worldwide phenomenon, spanning generations — but it almost never happened…

This project reveals the never-been-told story of Madden NFL, from its archaic 8-bit origins to its success as an annual must have—against all odds. For the first time ever, EA SPORTS is opening their vault of rare and never-been-seen footage, while also allowing cameras to follow along as the team finishes the next generation of the game. What started as an unlikely pairing between a computer whiz and a football legend, ignited a revolution and triggered a seismic collision between the worlds of jocks and geeks. They should have failed. Instead, their game changed the game—and our culture, too.

The series is produced by A+E Factual Studios group, SMAC Productions, Misher Films, and MTP. The series is executive produced by Kevin Misher and Andy Berman of Misher Films; Michael Strahan, Constance Schwartz-Morini, and FredAnthony Smith of SMAC Entertainment; Mike Tollin of MTP; Sandy Montag of The Montag Group; Steve Ascher, Kristy Sabat, and Jessica Conway of A+E Factual Studios; Daryl Holt, Seann Graddy, and Julie Foster of EA SPORTS; and Nathan Caswell, Jeremiah Zagar, and Jeremy Yaches of Public Record. Caswell and Zagar are set to direct.

    Game 7
Game 7 brings the two greatest words in the world of sports to life in a new five-part anthology series. With first-hand accounts from the athletes that participated in these high-stakes showdowns, each episode goes behind the scenes to unpack what it takes to compete on sports biggest stage. From the Chicago Cubs’ drought-shattering 2016 World Series victory to the New York Rangers’ Game 7 win in the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals, the series will explore how this quintessential test of maximum pressure and extreme intensity weigh on the hearts and minds of the legendary stars at the center of them.

Game 7 is produced by Words + Pictures and directed by Daniel Amigone. Game 7 is executive produced by Connor Schell, Aaron Cohen, and Anneka Jones of Words + Pictures; Mark Messier, Mat Vlasic, and Isaac Chera of Game 7; and Danny DeVito, Jake DeVito, and Lucy DeVito of Jersey Films 2nd Avenue.

ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chiefs Clothing
This is a true-crime documentary that unravels the story of Kansas City Chiefs superfan and serial bank robber Xaviar Babudar—famously known as “ChiefsAholic.”

Recognized for his distinctive wolf costume and boisterous social media antics, Babudar rose to fame as one of Kansas City’s most fervent fans. However, a suspected secret life came to light when he was arrested in Bixby, Oklahoma in December 2022 for what police claim to be a string of bank robberies. Through interviews granted by Babudar himself, ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chiefs Clothing explores critical moments in the events surrounding Babudar’s arrest and offers a firsthand perspective on his subsequent journey.

RIP ‘Red vs. Blue.’ Machinima Is Gone—but Its Legacy Is Everywhere

Red vs. Blue is officially over. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. Discovery released Red vs. Blue: Restoration, the final installment in the long-running saga that was once at the forefront of a whole new form of entertainment: web videos created from in-game footage. Machinima signaled a new world where that footage—of Halo, in Red vs. Blue’s case—could power viral clips. That was 2003. Now it seems as if Restoration might be machinima’s swan song.

“Machinima directors use game engines, which allow them to record a scene from any conceivable angle, like a Hollywood director uses a cinematographer,” WIRED wrote in a 2002 piece heralding the potential of this new filmmaking technique. When it launched a year later, Red vs. Blue exemplified those possibilities. The series was created by linking several Xboxes together and recording footage of a Halo multiplayer match, then adding voiceover. The absurdist, existential tone of the dialogue was a hilarious counterpoint to (and commentary on) the run-and-gun gameplay of the first-person shooter used to create it. The show’s creators founded a production company, Rooster Teeth, and made over a dozen more seasons worth of episodes.

Red vs. Blue would go on to develop a huge fan base and become a geek touchstone in the two decades that followed. Which is why Restoration’s release feels like an ignominious sendoff. In March, Rooster Teeth general manager Jordan Levin announced that Warner Bros. Discovery, now Rooster Teeth’s parent company, was shutting down the studio, and it soon became clear that the IP was being split up and sold off for parts. Today, the final installment of Red vs. Blue is being unceremoniously dumped onto streaming platforms with minimal fanfare or promotion.

It’s a sad moment for fans of Red vs. Blue and Rooster Teeth, but it’s a great moment to reflect on the impact the web series had. Machinima isn’t talked about much these days, but across the media landscape, you’ll find people using games to create everything from streams to clips to GIFs to art films, and doing it in ways that were unimaginable 21 years ago. “Machinima is not a word we use anymore, and it’s not really something we think of as like a medium or a genre anymore,” says Adam Bumas, a writer for the Internet culture newsletter Garbage Day. “But it’s still going strong. In fact, it’s everywhere.”

What hath machinima wrought? For starters, look at the phenomenon of Fortnite concerts. Over the last few years, major recording artists like Kid Laroi, Ariana Grande, and Travis Scott have performed sets for millions of people logged in to the game world. (Lil Nas X did a similar virtual event inside of Roblox.)

“The reason those concerts happened is because Epic realized that people were just hanging out in Fortnite and not even playing,” notes Bumas. “It’s like an evolution of a social space.” And since Fortnite’s gameplay is centered on building and creating things as well as shooting each other, it was only natural that Epic would also lean into developing tools that help people express themselves and entertain each other within the game world.

The game publisher has also developed tools that let filmmakers use the underlying game engine that Fortnite runs on in their production process. For instance, Industrial Light & Magic has employed Epic’s Unreal Engine in its StageCraft virtual on-set production process since the first season of The Mandalorian. For the most recent season, the company used Unreal to help actors and filmmakers visualize how a CG droid character would interact with flesh-and-blood actors.

“When you’re confronted with a sea of green and representations of characters on ping-pong balls or tennis balls, it becomes a pretty daunting experience for the actors and the director,” Epic Games’ chief technology officer, Kim Liberi, tells WIRED. “I think what we’ve been able to do here is give control back to the filmmakers.”

In a different galaxy far, far away, artist Tim Richardson recently collaborated with fashion designer Iris van Herpen on the CG short Neon Rapture, which was also made with Unreal. The tech allowed van Herpen to push her eye-popping concepts and designs further than she ever could have in the real world, and Richardson says that the game engine was his “sound stage” for the production. Where the Red vs. Blue creators had had to simply capture footage of themselves playing Halo, Richardson had a toolkit to work with that was specially designed for someone intending to render content rather than have a play experience. It allowed the filmmaking team and the fashion designer to prototype every aspect of the shoot from designs to lighting to costume to sets, and mix motion capture data with a digital environment on the fly to figure out their shots.

“It was the closest thing to shooting live-action I’ve experienced in VFX-based filmmaking,” Richardson says. “I was able to share ideas and collaborate with Iris on a time-scale impossible in linear VFX. I see game engines as an essential aspect of my future work.”
