  • The 12 Best Comedy Shows on Hulu, From “Only Murders in the Building” to “Schitt’s Creek”

The 12 Best Comedy Shows on Hulu, From “Only Murders in the Building” to “Schitt’s Creek”

Hulu is like a best friend you can turn to whenever you need a good laugh. No matter what time of the day, you can count on it to be there. Whether you’re the type of TV viewer who prefers to watch a whole season of a show in one sitting or one who would rather space episodes out over time, there’s no shortage of both options when you open Hulu on whatever device you stream on.

Unlike other streaming services out there, Hulu is the only service that incorporates new episodes of currently airing comedies from other broadcast networks — like ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” — into their catalog as they air on a weekly basis. Combine that with Hulu originals like “Only Murders in the Building” starring Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short and throwbacks with timelessly iconic characters like “Family Matters,” and there are plenty of hilarious options to stream on the platform.

Check out these 12 funny shows on Hulu you can stream right now.

  • Amazon’s Prime Video Will Begin Showing Commercials

Amazon’s Prime Video Will Begin Showing Commercials

While somehow Amazon’s Prime Video has managed to be one of the last bastions of ad-free programming, all things must come to an end at some point. Unfortunately for everyone who uses the service, that time is very soon. The service Freevee, which is also owned by Amazon, already includes ads. That being said, viewers don’s need a subscription to watch what Freevee has on offer. Prime is already $14.99 per month, but it also includes a service that no other streaming service can claim. Same-day delivery of Amazon products along with a host of other perks.

The ad-supported Amazon Prime is due to hit your screens sometime early next year, meaning there’s precious little time to enjoy one of the last ad-free streaming services. If you really hate ads, you’ll be able to remove them — at a cost of an extra $2.99 per month. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck watching commercials during TV shows and movies on Amazon Prime.

The comparison has frequently been made between streaming and traditional network television. There are obvious differences, such as being able to select specifically what you want to watch through streaming, instead of channel-surfing to find something that suits your taste. If you’re paying for every major streaming service without using ad-supported tiers, you’re still likely paying around $100 a month, if not more. At that point, cable may have been a better deal, especially when considering the shakeup in Hollywood that the streaming model has caused. There’s also the fact that many streaming services have yet to actually turn a profit.

  • Sex Education’s Final Season Comes to a Cozy Climax

Sex Education’s Final Season Comes to a Cozy Climax

This post contains plot details for Sex Education season 4.

When Sex Education’s first season dropped on Netflix at the start of 2019, it felt like a raunchy, cringe-inducing relief from Trump and Brexit-era politics. Set in a retro parallel universe, it had one foot in the past (lots of 80s music and clothing) and the other in the present (iPhones, contemporary pop culture references). The series initially revolved around virginal teenager Otis (Asa Butterfield), who picks up a knack for advice from his sex therapist mother Jean (Gillian Anderson). With encouragement from tough girl-with-a-heart-of-gold Maeve (Emma Mackey), Otis begins an underground counseling service for his schoolmates at Moordale Secondary School, offering often graphic tips on a startling array of carnal challenges. Vaginismus, revenge porn, alien sex fantasies, breast-binding, chlamydia, abortion, anal douching, slut shaming, sexual assault: Sex Education explored them all with its trademark humor and kindness.

It seemed like a fun, wholesomely filthy update of classic American teen comedies as reimagined by a smart young British playwright (creator Laurie Nunn). But four years later, as the series comes to a close, Sex Education feels less like an escapist romp and more like a front on the cultural battlefield. At a moment when American schools are increasingly banning books and blocking classroom instruction on LGBTQ+ topics and sex education generally, when abortion rights are ever more threatened and attacks on gender-affirming care for trans youth mount in both the US and UK, a series that sprinkles sex positivity over every surface resonates in a whole different way. Especially when this series is a massive global success.

As if recognizing this, Sex Education ended season three in a blaze of rebellion against the forces of repression. Over the course of that season, new Moordale headmaster Hope Haddon (Jemima Kirke) had attempted to repair the school’s bad reputation (it was labeled “sex school” by a local tabloid) by forcing students to wear uniforms, censoring sex ed classes, and publicly shaming those she deemed sexually deviant. Moordale’s student body exploded in glorious insolence, mounting an extravaganza—complete with a school band version of Peaches’ “Fuck the Pain Away” and a student-painted Wall of Vulva—that led to the school being defunded and shut down.

Now some of the characters have transferred to Cavendish. A ”student-led” school, Cavendish could not be more different from stuffy Moordale, thanks to its candy-colored color palette, its daily meditation practice and its flamboyantly progressive values. “Everyone seems happy,” Otis marvels to his best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) when they first arrive. “And queer!” adds Eric, who has learned not to hide his own queerness over the last three seasons. He is delighted to discover that Cavendish’s most popular kids—Abbi (Anthony Lexa) and Roman (Felix Mufti) —are trans. They quickly absorb him into their clique, creating a small rift between Eric and Otis. “He’s always been my person, but sometimes I feel he doesn’t entirely get me,” Eric tells his new friends of Otis. When Eric later gently tries to explain that he and Otis really don’t talk about their racial or financial or religious differences, Otis squirms away from the conversation.

Otis has always been alternatively endearing and self-centered. His brattiness takes center stage this season as he arrives at the new school assuming that he will resume his role as sex therapist, and finds a young woman named O (Thaddea Graham) already operating a practice at Cavendish. He asserts his privilege over O, nastily trying to swipe her clients. But his attempts to introduce himself to the school backfires when he inadvertently broadcasts his sad attempt at a dick pic (complete with poorly trimmed pubic hair) to his classmates. “No one will want to have therapy with creepy pube man,” he says mournfully afterwards.

  • Everything to Know About the Engagement Rings on “Love Is Blind”

Everything to Know About the Engagement Rings on “Love Is Blind”

If you’re a fan of Netflix’s “Love Is Blind,” then you may be curious about the engagement rings, which are either chosen on set or brought in (Kyle Abrams presented his mom’s ring to Shaina Hurley during season two, for example).

Knowing that on “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” the jewelry is entirely provided by Neil Lane, you have to wonder how much shopping the men on “LIB” could possibly be getting done outside of the pods while they’re holed up from the outside world.

What’s more, if you’re looking closely, you may notice similarities in some of the women’s engagement rings. In fact, in season one, it appeared Lauren Speed, Jessica Batten, and Amber Pike wore identical rings following their proposals.

According to Netflix, all the men are presented with dozens of rings to choose from, unless they brought their own. “Whatever they choose, we pay for. Whatever we pay for, they keep, regardless of engagement ending,” a representative told POPSUGAR. And even though you might recognize similar elements on some designs — like diamond carat size, band embellishment, and setting — no two styles are exactly the same.

Netflix even shared that in season two, the men proposing discussed their choices together, so the rings felt unique to each recipient. Of course, there are fans who have tweeted that they believe the women should be able to choose their preferred style before heading into the pods. That became a major issue in season two, when Mallory Zapata ended up with a silver ring picked by Salvador Perez, instead of her preferred choice of gold. Perhaps the producers will find a way for both contestants to join the ring-selection process in future seasons.

In the meantime, keep reading for everything to know about the “Love Is Blind” engagement rings, including the similarities, the payment, and the process by which they’re chosen.

  • Disney Explores ABC Sale, Sparking Employee Anxiety: Report | Entrepreneur

Disney Explores ABC Sale, Sparking Employee Anxiety: Report | Entrepreneur

Walt Disney Co. is in preliminary talks about potentially selling ABC network and TV stations, with Nexstar Media Group (the largest owner of local television and broadcast networks in the country) showing interest, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

While the discussions are said to be in the early stages, with no “specific valuation,” several individuals with or connected to ABC News have expressed apprehension and unease as they confront an uncertain future, CNN reported.

One ABC News employee described the prevailing sentiment to CNN saying, “Everyone is freaking the f–k out.” Another added, “It’s all anyone at work is talking about.”

Staff members, who had already anticipated separation from Disney following Bob Iger’s comments in July suggesting the television asset might not be core to the company’s strategy, are now concerned about the rapid progress of a potential sale, they told CNN.

ABC News employees told the outlet that there has been a lack of insight into the company’s future, receiving information about potential plans through the media instead of directly from Disney’s leadership.

In July, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the company’s traditional TV networks “may not be core” to its business. Martina Albertazzi/Bloomberg | Getty Images.

The rumors of a sale and subsequent staff uncertainty come amid ongoing financial challenges for Disney, particularly in its broadcast and streaming divisions. While Disney continues to heavily depend on traditional channels like ESPN and ABC, which contribute to approximately one-third of its operational profits, the channels are facing significant challenges due to cord-cutting (when a user switches from paid cable to an internet streaming service), rising sports programming expenses, and a reduction in advertiser support.

In its third-quarter earnings report, Disney’s traditional channels generated $1.9 billion in operational income, a 23% drop as compared to the previous year. As for its streaming division, losses have amounted to over $11 billion since 2019, The New York Times reported.

  • Disney+’s Agatha Harkness “WandaVision” Spinoff Is Delayed Until Fall 2024

Disney+’s Agatha Harkness “WandaVision” Spinoff Is Delayed Until Fall 2024

Looks like we haven’t seen the last of Agatha Harkness after all. The finale of “WandaVision” left the door open for the evil witch to return, and Disney+ is making it happen next year. So get ready for another new MCU series, “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” (previously known as “Agatha: Coven of Chaos”).

We’re not quite sure yet what the series will be about, but we do have two major pieces of casting news. Aubrey Plaza joined the series in an undisclosed role, Variety reported on Nov. 2, 2022. POPSUGAR reached out to Disney and Plaza’s reps for comment but did not receive a response. The news came a day after the outlet broke the news that “Heartstopper” actor Joe Locke also joined the cast. His role is currently unknown, though fans have speculated that he’ll play some version of the hero Wiccan, aka Billy Maximoff — one of Wanda’s sons.

Most of the final episode of “WandaVision” is dedicated to a showdown between Wanda and Agatha (Kathryn Hahn), her nemesis. Though Agatha is defeated in the end, she’s still alive and lurking about as a potential mentor for Wanda to lean on since she understands Wanda’s magic. But since Wanda technically died at the end of May’s “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” movie, it’s not clear what exactly the plot of “Darkhold Diaries” will be.

Here’s what we know about the show so far.

    “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” Plot

Aside from the fact that the show will focus on Agatha, plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but we do know “WandaVision” head writer Jac Schaeffer will once again tackle this new project in her respective role. It seems likely that the witch will be building her own coven of magical beings to wreak havoc in the MCU.

    “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” Cast

Hahn will return as Agatha, with Locke and Plaza joining the cast. Emma Caulfield Ford will also reprise the role of Dottie from “WandaVision.”

    “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” Release Date

“Agatha: Coven of Chaos” was originally set for a winter 2023 release, Marvel President Kevin Feige revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s now been delayed until early fall 2024.

What’s worth streaming in September 2023? Here are your best bets amid slim pickings.

Looking to spend your entertainment dollars wisely in September? Watch Hulu and read a book or two.

That pretty much sums up a hugely underwhelming lineup from streaming services, which burned through their best shows in the spring and have little to offer for the start of the traditional fall TV season. That’s not to say there aren’t a handful of promising shows — there are — but is one decent new show per service worth the price of multiple monthly subscriptions? Almost certainly not.

  • All of Adam Sandler’s Netflix Movies, From “Hustle” to “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”

All of Adam Sandler’s Netflix Movies, From “Hustle” to “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”

You can expect to associate the name Adam Sandler with Netflix for at least a little while longer. Since 2014, the actor has made nine movies and one comedy special for the streaming service. He was originally hired to make four movies in 2014, and the streamer renewed the deal in 2017 and again in 2020, per Business Insider. Since his latest deal, Sandler has released three films — “Hustle,” “Murder Mystery 2,” and “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” and at least one more is on the way. Over the years, the deal has also given us gems like “Murder Mystery” and “The Week Of” as well as a couple of misses — who can forget “The Ridiculous 6”?

Sandler has long been a beloved force in comedy thanks to memorable roles in the likes of “Happy Gilmore” and “Billy Madison.” In recent years, he’s shown off his dramatic side, with his starring role in “Uncut Gems” garnering extensive acclaim. Still, comedy has always been Sandler’s bread and butter, and with “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” which premiered on Aug. 25, he returns to his roots with the dad jokes and hilarious mishaps he’s best known for. His comedic work has even earned him the Mark Twain Prize For American Humor, which he received in a ceremony on March 19.

Many of his Netflix projects have been critically panned, but Sandler doesn’t seem to be bothered by that. “When someone asks me: those bad reviews you get — how does that make you feel?” he said at the ceremony, per The Hollywood Reporter. “The reason they don’t hurt me is because [my friends and I are having so much fun making these movies]. Everything we do together makes me feel like the critics don’t know what they’re talking about.”

In honor of “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah” and the comedic force that is Sandler, check out all of the movies Sandler has made as part of his partnership with Netflix so far.

  • The 15 Best Action Movies on Hulu Right Now

The 15 Best Action Movies on Hulu Right Now

When it comes to entertainment, there’s a reason why the action genre produces some of the best-selling movies. Being constantly exhilarating; jam-packed with fast-paced cars, guns, and fight scenes; and that they’re minimally thought-provoking are universal components that make action movies beloved by audiences across generations. These types of movies are also popular thanks to the fact that the genre often overlaps with others, such as comedy, science fiction, adventure, and romance.

Over the years, action movies have simultaneously grown into blockbuster giants and direct-to-streamer favorites. Among the big streaming platforms out there, Hulu has an extensive library of action flicks, ranging from originals like “Boss Level” featuring Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh to mainstream flicks like “Die Hard.” Choosing from the vast collection of available flicks on Hulu can be a struggle, so if you’re looking to sit back and enjoy some old-fashioned action movies, here are our top picks!

  • How Much Does Disney+ Cost? It’s Complicated

How Much Does Disney+ Cost? It’s Complicated

On Tuesday, Hulu debuted a new season of hit comedy Only Murders in the Building, starring the one and only Meryl Streep. Want to check it out? It’s easy. You can subscribe to the Disney-owned streamer for just $7.99 per month. Oh, you don’t want to watch ads? No problem. You can upgrade to the ad-free plan for just $10.99 per month. But hurry, because the price is going up by $3 on October 12.

You’re right, that is a little expensive when you factor in your other TV subscriptions. But you can also bundle Hulu and Disney+ for just $9.99 per month—though you’ll have to suffer through those ads. Or you can wait until September 6, when you’ll be able to subscribe to an ad-free bundle of Disney+ and Hulu for a price of $19.99. You know what? Why don’t you just go all in and pay for ESPN+ too? That’ll be $24.99 per month—and you won’t be able to skip the ads when watching those live Major League Baseball games.

Sorry, am I confusing you? Welcome to streaming’s second decade.

At the dawn of the streaming wars—as legacy entertainment companies like Disney, Warner Bros., and NBCUniversal launched direct-to-consumer services to compete with Netflix—the great promise was that new technologies would make it easier than ever for those consumers to watch their favorite TV shows and movies. Forget the cable bundle; you could get smart, sleek programming from Netflix with the click of a button. Even premium cable channels like HBO and Showtime were suddenly available à la carte.

It didn’t last long. Netflix, the great streaming pioneer, stumbled. And Hollywood soon found out that streaming wasn’t exactly a moneymaker. Now every service is raising its prices, rolling out advertising, and finding new ways to make their subscribers pay for more than what they actually want. Showtime is now only available if you also subscribe to Paramount+ for a bundle price of $11.99 per month. HBO Max and Discovery+ have joined forces into a new service, Max, that costs as much as $19.99 per month.

And then there’s Disney, which on Wednesday announced that, after launching an advertising-supported version of Disney+ at the end of last year, it’s raising some prices and adding several new ways to subscribe to its trio of streaming services. When the changes go into effect later this year, Hulu will be one of the most expensive ad-free streaming services on the market—all the more reason to bundle. On a call with investors, CEO Bob Iger—back again for his second turn in the hot seat—said the plan is “a future where consumers can access even more of the company’s streaming content all in one place.”

But before things get streamlined, they’re getting even more complicated. So complicated, in fact, that Disney released a chart just to explain all the different ways you can pay for its streaming services (and that’s before the company eventually brings all of ESPN’s flagship live sports to streaming).

When Disney launched Disney+ in 2019, the company promised Wall Street that the streamer would be profitable within five years. Overall streaming losses declined to approximately $512 million last quarter, but Disney+ also shed nearly 12 million subscribers after losing cricket programming in India. With his bill coming due, Iger now says the company will follow in rival Netflix’s footsteps and begin cracking down on password sharing next year.

Almost makes you want to call up Comcast, doesn’t it?

On Wednesday, the streaming service issued a press release announcing plans to introduce an ad-supported subscription plan in Canada, following the successful introduction of a similar plan for its American customers.

  • Good News, “Heartstopper” Fans: It’s Already Renewed For Season 3

Good News, “Heartstopper” Fans: It’s Already Renewed For Season 3

Content warning: The following story contains spoilers for “Heartstopper” season two.

“Heartstopper” season two is here, but some fans might already have their eyes turned toward the next installment. The series, created and written by Alice Oseman from her series of graphic novels, follows Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke), two British teens who fall in love after meeting at school. The show grapples with their struggles to explore their relationship (and themselves) in an environment that can be less than accepting toward LGBTQ+ people. The ensemble cast includes Charlie’s besties Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tao (William Gao), and Isaac (Tobie Donovan), as well as other classmates and friends, including Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), Imogen (Rhea Norwood), and Sahar (Leila Khan).

Back in May 2022, Netflix renewed “Heartstopper” for seasons two and three. Oseman said in an interview this May with Hello! magazine that they do know how the series will ultimately bring everyone’s stories to a close. “I definitely have an end point in mind, just because I know what’s going to happen in the whole story, [and] because I’ve got the comics planned out,” they said. “And I imagine four seasons would see out the whole story of ‘Heartstopper.’” For now, whether the show will get renewed for that fourth season remains a mystery.

11 Feel-Good Queer Romances to Watch Right Now (or Very Soon)

Royal romances are the best kind. Directed and cowritten by Tony-winning scribe Matthew López, Red, White & Royal Blue adapts Casey McQuiston’s immensely popular New York Times best-selling novel in fabulous fashion. Red, White & Royal Blue follows two men with incredible family pedigrees—British prince Henry (Cinderella’s Nicholas Galitzine) and American first son Alex Claremont-Diaz (The Kissing Booth’s Taylor Zakhar Perez)—who must engage in a crisis-PR truce even though they get on each other’s nerves. But the more they talk, the more Henry and Alex discover that the line between love and hate is quite thin. “There are a lot of projects that have come and gone in my career that I have had the ability to let go of,” López told VF, “but if I wasn’t able to make this movie, it would’ve cost me something.” He got his wish as the helmer of this feel-good, fizzy romance, which also features none other than Uma Thurman as the president of the United States. You can paint yourself Red, White & Royal Blue when the film hits Amazon Prime August 11.

Some feel-good queer romances also double as camp classics. Look no further than But I’m a Cheerleader, the ’90s satirical rom-com which stars a young Natasha Lyonne as Megan Bloomfield, a lesbian cheerleader who gets sent to conversion therapy camp. Yes, that may not sound like the grounds for a feel-good queer love story—but in the hands of Lyonne, director Jamie Babbit, and screenwriter Brian Wayne Peterson, But I’m a Cheerleader becomes a romp about the queer experience, with Lyonne’s sexually confused cheerleader falling pom-poms-over-heels for Clea DuVall’s Graham, a cool, confident college student also at the camp. Along with DuVall and Lyonne, the cast includes once and future stars like Melanie Lynskey, Michelle Williams, and RuPaul, who does his darndest to butch it up as counselor Mike. RuPaul as an ex-gay? That’s even funnier than the hilarious Ross Mathews.

  • These Teen Horror Movies on Netflix Will Chill You to Your Core

These Teen Horror Movies on Netflix Will Chill You to Your Core

Don’t ask us why, but there’s something about teen scream movies that makes them totally irresistible. Whether the flick revolves around high schoolers pursued by a masked villain through the woods or picked off one by one by a mysterious menace, teen horror movies are oftentimes predictable, but somehow totally absorbing.

From “The Craft” to “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Scream,” the ’90s may have been the peak of freaky teen movies, but plenty of other great movies have followed in their footsteps. More modern flicks like “Cam” have harnessed the scary capabilities of modern technology to spin truly bone-chilling stories, while others that rely on more well-known horror tropes — like the vengeful spirits of “Ouija” or the good old-fashioned serial killers of “Prom Night” — will still manage to keep you up all night.

While there are plenty of extremely scary horror movies that don’t revolve around teens, there’s always something extra freaky and fun about a blend of teenage nostalgia and monsters. If you’re in the mood for a good scare, we’ve rounded up the best teen slashers, psychological thrillers, and supernatural horror movies available to stream on Netflix.
