Warren, who recently appeared opposite Jamie Foxx in the Prime Video movie The Burial, in addition to TV roles in East New York and The Leftovers, will portray Catherine Weaver. Per Deadline, Catherine is a veteran of the top-secret Night Action investigative program.
She trains trains and oversees various Night Agents. That includes Basso’s character, Peter Sutherland. Catherine is described as “smart, private, and determined.” She also passionately defends her agents, but she does find it hard to earn Peter’s trust as he struggles with betrayal issues stemming from the events of the first season.
Along with Basso and Buchanan as Rose Larkin, the cast of season 1 included Oscar nominee Hong Chau as Diane Farr, Sarah Desjardins as Maddie Redfield, Fola Evans-Akingbola as Chelsea Arrington, Eve Harlow as Ellen, Enrique Murciano as Ben Almora, Phoenix Raei as Dale, and D.B. The Night Season 2 is expected to premiere in 2024. The part that of the show that spices things up is that new contestants join throughout the week. This creates an uneven number between the women and men and forces the existing contestants to choose whether they want to stay with their current partners or couple up with new members. Viewers can also expect date cards at any given moment, which allow contestants to ask someone they’re interested in to spend some alone time together. This feature has the potential to ruffle some feathers, especially when several new contestants make their debut with a date card in hand.
At the end of the season, couples get a chance to have an overnight date with no cameras or microphones (much like Fantasy Suites on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette). Following the overnight dates is the finale, where contestants either choose to break up or get engaged. Like The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise also has an “After the Final Rose” special, where contestants reunite to hash out drama and update viewers on their relationships.

The Dancing With the Stars 2023 hosts are Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough. Ribeiro, an actor best known for playing Carlton Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, won Dancing With the Stars Season 19 with pro Witney Carson. Hough was a pro on Dancing With the Stars from Seasons 4 to 8. She won two seasons: Season 4 with Apolo Anton Ohno and Season 5 with Helio Castroneves. She also a judge on Dancing With the Stars from Seasons 19 to 24.
If you’re of a certain vintage, you’ll remember how inflexibly tribal music fans used to be. If you were, say, an alternative kid, you wouldn’t dream of listening to anything the rock kids were. It just wasn’t done.
Admitting you liked the odd Black Sabbath or Van Halen song risked jeopardizing your relationship with the other alt kids. And because you were already known as someone who preferred Joy Division over Judas Priest, the rockers would have nothing to do with you. Might as well go die on an iceberg somewhere.
There are still silos among music fans, but they’re nowhere near as rigidly peer-reviewed and enforced. In fact, I can’t remember ever seeing this much fluidity when it comes to music preferences.
I started to notice this several years ago when I did some guest lecturing on Canadian music history at Toronto’s Humber College. To get a better idea of who I was talking to, I asked all the 20-somethings in the class to recite the last five songs they played on their phones. It was illuminating.

A typical playlist went like this: Drake, The Weeknd, AC/DC, Nicki Minaj, Led Zeppelin, Garth Brooks, Steve Aoki, the Beatles, Justin Bieber, The Cult, Arkells, Avicii. One male Humber student blew my mind when he said he was currently going through the discography of Billie Holiday — she died in 1959 — and the rest of the class nodded in approval.
When I betrayed my surprise with body language and a confused facial expression, the class wanted to know what was wrong. I tried to explain that in my day, we picked a lane and stuck with it. They looked at me like Bart regards Grandpa Simpson.
“Why compartmentalize music?” someone said. “If you do, you’re just limiting your options when it comes to finding your next favourite song.” I had to admit this kid had a point.
Since that day in class, I’ve been fascinated by the growing worthlessness of emphasizing musical genres. Speaking generally, the post-Napster streaming generation doesn’t want to be locked into one style of music or another. All they care about is great music, regardless of age, era, sound, scene or vintage. With a few pokes at their phones, they have access to more than 100 million songs for a price that can drop to free. Why wouldn’t they want to roam the musical universe?
There’s another overlooked role of technology. An album like Nirvana’s Nevermind remains relevant more than 32 years after its release. Sure, we can talk about its evergreen punk rock and grunge aesthetics but focus on the age of the record and, if you can, try to remember what older music you were listening to then.

Would you have been listening to songs that were 32 years old? That would mean listening to mono recordings of post-Elvis-in-the-army/pre-Beatles music. It sounded old in 1991 and sounds even older today. Yet Nevermind still sounds like it could have been released last week. Some might say this points to the stagnation and ossification of rock, but I have a different take.
Starting in about 1969, newly equipped eight- and 16-track recording studio technology started to become available. Music got more complicated because it could, thanks to the magic of multi-tracking, overdubs and ever more sophisticated outboard processing gear.
Mono records had but disappeared and we began to get full-frequency high-fidelity stereo albums and singles. A properly recorded album — think Abbey Road — sounds contemporary as far as audio quality goes. Here Comes the Sun has sonic attributes every bit as good as something recorded yesterday. Songs more than 50 years old don’t sound it.
New data reinforces this. This is the time for Spotify Wrapped, the annual report card given to subscribers that summarizes all the songs they listened to over the last year. The company reports that users are more ecumenical than ever when it comes to their music consumption.
Instead of driving young streamers toward specific musical silos, genre tags — and Spotify has more than 6,000 of them (and growing) — are merely signs above an all-you-can-eat buffet that tells you something about what you might choose to eat.

Yes, yes, there are still musical tribes. We’ll never see the end of emo kids, goth followers and better-deal-than-mellow metal fans, but it wouldn’t surprise me to hear that even the current scenes with the strictest musical taste requirements offer far more latitude than what the original Lollapalooza generation had. (Speaking of which, have you seen the vast variety in Lollapalooza lineups over the last decade? I rest my case.)
And genres still matter. Music-based radio stations pick formats and carefully curate material from specific areas of music. For example, you’ll never hear Tool on a station that specializes in current pop. This is because a radio station makes a promise to its audience that every time they tune in, they will be rewarded with the type of music they expect from the station.

The difference is instead of bolting for a radio station operated by a rival company, SiriusXM can keep listeners in its very big sandbox by offering dozens of different music channels in one place.
The idea of radio formats has been in place for decades. This method of programming continues to work very well, but I believe there’s a large market for stations that cater to the tastes and musical whims of millennials and gen-Zers — which, come to think of it, would mean a return to an old-style Top 40. Those OG stations sampled from everywhere: pop, rock, R&B, country, dance — whatever the biggest songs on all the different charts. Maybe it’s time we returned to that.

Hey, it seems to be working for the older demos and their classic hits stations. Tune in to a Jack, a Boom, a Bob, or a Fresh, and you’ll hear a wide selection of oldies (sorry, but that’s what they are) that might offer a segue from the Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive right into Livin’ on a Prayer from Bon Jovi.
Maybe it’s time we binned genres at least a little more. Like the kid in my class said, why limit yourself over labels? Respect all music, listen to what you want. Seems like the right thing to do, innit?

Stay with me as I share my journey with this movie. Like many others, when I first saw it, I hated it. I thought the violence and destruction were excessive and without thought, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. With the passing of time and the completion of the trilogy of movies, I have done a complete 180, and Man of Steel is now a movie I unexpectedly and unabashedly adore.
This is a deeply personal movie about feeling alienated from the world around you and wanting to be accepted, and about the failures of our parents while they try to look out for us. (Man of Steel could also be referred to as “Inside You There Are Two Dads: The Movie.”) All the elements that left me cold the first time around have since been contextualized thoughtfully in the movies that follow, especially in the opening scene of Batman v Superman.
Henry Cavill seems born to play Superman, bringing his natural charisma and good looks to the role in addition to an undercurrent of melancholy as he tries to navigate a world that seems to have no clear place for him. Michael Shannon is menacing as Zod, as is Antje Traue as his lieutenant Faora-Ul. With incredible fight scenes, a roaring score from Hans Zimmer, and thoughtful meditations on where our parents’ vision of our path in life differs from our own, Man of Steel deserves your reconsideration (or a rewatch, if you’re already in the “this rules, actually” camp). Now that it’s on Netflix (and with a new Superman on the way), that’s doubly true. —PV

Based on an article from fellow Vox Media publication New York Magazine (hello, my colleagues), Hustlers is a colorful, exciting crime thriller about a group of strippers in New York City who scam wealthy clients. The movie features one of Jennifer Lopez’s best performances as the group’s ringleader and mother figure, and Constance Wu, Riverdale’sLili Reinhart, Keke Palmer, Lizzo, and Cardi B fill out the lovable group of women just trying to make it on their own terms. From our review when the movie was first released:
If anything, the film, based on a true story, feels more like the female reboot of a franchise than any of the actual remakes and reboots in that vein that we’ve gotten (Ocean’s 8, Ghostbusters, Men in Black: International, etc.) in that it tells the kind of story usually reserved for men with a cast full of women. Unlike those attempts, Hustlers never once feels like it’s just “a heist movie but with women;” it’s a full-fledged epic, made by and about women, and proof positive that female-centered films can flourish without being based on a pre-existing male-based IP.
Lopez recently announced a new album and short film due this February, which makes it a great time to revisit one of her best roles. —PV

Director Renny Harlin is taking a page out of the Fear Street playbook by spearheading a new trilogy of stand-alone sequels to 2008’s The Strangers, all scheduled to be released throughout 2024. What better occasion could there be to revisit the last time the series’ sinister trio of masked murderers last stalked their way across screens?
Bryan Bertino’s original 2008 movie was a hit: a lean, mean psychological horror film that felt like a much-needed back-to-basics serial killer thriller for audiences fatigued with special effects-reliant spectacles and the “torture porn” traps of the Saw franchise. The Strangers became a sleeper hit among fans and saw significant success at the box office, so it’s a wonder why it took over a decade for the sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night, to finally come out.
Set 10 years after the original, the movie follows a family vacationing at a trailer park in Ohio who unexpectedly cross paths with three masked killers intent on adding them to their body count. With no other recourse and desperate to survive, the family must band together to fight back and escape with their lives. The sequel leans more into the tropes of slasher horror, and the sedate barebones aesthetic of the original gives way to a more neon-infused contemporary grunge, but overall, The Strangers: Prey at Night is still a wickedly fun and terrifying horror movie. Here’s hoping that Harlin’s trilogy is able to push the carnage even further. —TE

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a wonderful antidote to these times, a sexy movie about sexy people doing sexy things.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie play a husband-and-wife assassin duo who are in the midst of marital problems — turns out, it’s hard to keep your home life spicy when your work life is as dangerous as it comes. When they’re both assigned to kill the same person, things go very wrong.
It’s a very fun time at the movies, but there’s another reason to watch Mr. & Mrs. Smith right now — Prime Video is working on a TV adaptation starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine (Blue Eye Samurai), which will premiere next February. —PV

Audiences were eagerly awaiting the final season of The Crown.
Part 1 of Season 6 debuted on November 16, quickly racking up 11.1M views in its first few days on Netflix. That was enough to boost it to No. 1 on the English-language TV charts for the week of November 13 to 19. According to Netflix, the new episodes were No. 1 in 44 countries and among the Top 10 in 85.
The final episodes are set to debut on December 14, meaning that The Crown is likely to appear in the Top 10 through the end of the year.
In second place last week was Matt Rife’s new stand-up special, Natural Selection. The special managed 7.4M views in its debut week. That was followed by All The Light We Cannot See, which was down from first place the week prior, with an additional 5.7M views. Netflix says the World War II limited series reached the Top 10 in 93 countries.
The TV list was rounded out with some unscripted content, including Escaping Twin Flames and Season 7 of Selling Sunset.
As for the film side of things, David Fincher’s The Killerstole first place for the second consecutive week with 22.3M views — by far the most-watched title this week. In just two weeks, the film has racked up about 50M views, putting it well on its way to Netflix’s most popular list. Extraction 2 is currently in tenth place with just over 134M views in its first 91 days.
Best.Christmas.Ever! also made its debut on the Top 10, coming in at No. 2 with 16.3M views.
Returning to the list were romantic thriller Locked In (UK) in fourth place (5.1M views), Paw Patrol: The Movie in eighth place (2.7M views) and Pain Hustlers, starring Emily Blunt and Chris Evans, in ninth place (2.6M views).

The biggest cost on Candians’ electricity bills is home heating, and heat pumps are becoming popular among Canadians because of government incentives to help with the costs. Walker installed a heat pump 20 years ago to replace his oil and electric heating in his 60-plus-year-old home in Halifax. “I’m a good old Scotsman and I kept every bill—my total energy costs dropped 40%,” he says. “I use thermal storage for my backup, and that heat pump is paying for itself three-fold now.”
Water savings tip: Get efficient
Plus, the heat pump can help save on the second biggest cost on your electricity: hot water. “Your payback will depend largely on the volume of hot water your household uses,” Walker says. “If you’ve got teenagers taking three showers a day, then the payback on that heat pump hot water tank will be fairly quick.” If a heat pump is too big of a commitment, you can opt for a more energy efficient hot water heater (even if you rent yours), says Walker.
Also, use cold water detergent to wash clothes and check for leaky taps. If you pay for municipal water, where you pay based on how much you use, that could be a sinkful of money a day going down the drain, he says.

You might be in the wrong plan, as things have changed since 2020, and you might not need as much as you did during the lockdowns. Keehn says: “That’s hundreds of dollars a year. People may say, ‘But I’m going to have to sit on hold with the phone company for hours.’ Maybe you will, but just sit on hold while you’re watching Netflix,” she suggests. According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance, production on HBO‘s highly-anticipated The Last of Us Season 2 has been scheduled to begin on January 7, 2024. The listing also states that the horror drama’s filming location will take place in Vancouver, Canada. Prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Season 2 was originally slated for a late 2023 filming start.
What is The Last of Us about?
“The live-action series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed,” reads the synopsis. “Joel and Ellie, a pair connected through the harshness of the world they live in, are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across a post-pandemic America.”
The Last of Us currently stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Season 2 is expected to be based on Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game sequel The Last of Us Part II, which will feature a significant time jump introducing a now grown-up Ellie. Due to the 118-day-long actors’ strike, new casting announcements for Season 2 have not yet been made.
The series is executive produced and co-written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and original game writer Neil Druckmann, who is also serving as one of the directors. It is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. Bangtan Sonyeondan, better known as BTS or The Bangtan Boys, debuted in 2013 with members RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. The boyband captured the hearts of millions with their fanbase affectionately called ARMY, which stands for Adorable Representative MC of Youth. Disney CEO Bob Iger says next month’s beta launch of a combined Hulu–Disney+ app will help acclimate families to the concept of Bluey being a couple of clicks away from American Horror Story.
Speaking to Wall Street analysts on the company’s quarterly earnings call, Iger didn’t identify any specific programming or details about how the two services would be separated for parents who prefer that. He said he viewed a demo of the new dual service on Tuesday, announcing that it will launch in beta in December, with the full rollout due in March.
“We are basically putting it in beta so that we can prepare parents, largely, to basically implement parental controls, because you’ll be able to access Hulu programming on the same app,” Iger said. Assuming those best practices are implemented and the tools work as intended, executives see opportunities in terms of “upsell capabilities, in terms of increasing engagement,” Iger continued. “We found that where we bundle, we lower churn. And again, these are steps that are all taken to make [streaming] a great business.”
Disney last week confirmed it is buying Comcast’s one-third stake in Hulu, which will allow for more leverage in terms of pricing and bundling. Disney+ and Hulu are already part of a successful bundle with ESPN+, though the three are all still separate apps. In an interview with CNBC immediately before the earnings call, Iger called the Hulu consolidation “a great step for the company from a strategic perspective.” He added that it “gives us an opportunity to further connect the dots between Disney+ and Hulu.”
Parental controls have been a key feature of Disney+ since it launched nearly four years ago. While it initially focused on the five pillars of Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, National Geographic and Disney-branded titles and was known for emphasizing families, it has also woven in R-rated fare like Deadpool and Logan.
As far as the company’s overall streaming business, “the building blocks are in place,” Iger maintained on the earnings call. Disney still expects to turn a profit in streaming by the end of fiscal 2024, as it has asserted through many ups and downs. The company has stepped back from the aggressive subscriber targets it first issued in 2019 and then bumped up in 2020.
After over three years since it was announced that Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead franchise would be getting an animated spin-off series, Snyder finally provided an update regarding the project’s current status. Speaking with Total Film, the filmmaker confirmed that Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas has officially been scrapped despite already completing voice recordings and scripts for it.
“We did all the scripts and the animatics, and all the voices are recorded. So you could watch it, even in its crazy animatic form – you can watch the whole run,” Snyder said.
What was Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas supposed to be about?
Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was originally supposed to chronicle the origin story of Scott (Dave Bautista) and his rescue crew during the initial fall of Vegas as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak. Snyder was going to direct two episodes of the anime series, while Jay Oliva (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and upcoming Netflix Original Anime Series Trese) signed on to showrun and direct.
The series was executive produced by Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Wesley Coller (The Stone Quarry), Jay Olivia, and Shay Hatten. Bautista, Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick, and Ella Purnell were actually going to reprise their roles from 2021’s Army of the Dead movie in the anime series. Joe Manganiello, Christian Slater, Harry Lennix, Ross Butler, Anya Chalotra, Vanessa Hudgens, Yetide Badaki, Christina Wren, Monica Barbaro, and Nolan North were also previously cast for the project.
With each season of Netflix’s “Selling Sunset,” the cast’s wardrobes grow bolder and more memorable. Now, on Season 7, the cast doesn’t fail to deliver when it comes to over-the-top fashion, from Chelsea Lazkani to Chrishell Stause. In fact, Lazkani put it best when it comes to styling her memorable looks for the show. “When you’re on a cast with a number of ladies and you all have different body types, you’ve got to know what your best assets are,” she told POPSUGAR, adding: “I’m not 5’9″ like the rest of the girls, I’m 5’5″, but you may think that I’m a lot taller than I am because I show off the parts of me that are flattering. I think everything is about angles and knowing what works for you.”

In season 5, former castmate Christine Quinn worked with stylist Kat Gosik on her eye-catching looks. (In May 2023, Quinn alleged that “Selling Sunset” producers pressured the cast to adhere to a revealing dress code. Yes, the “Selling Sunset” cast dresses the same in real life, whether they’re going to the office at The Oppenheim Group for a meeting or hosting an open house. “Anything can be office wear these days,” says Chrishell Stause. “Add a blazer to that cute dress and you are ready to go.” Likewise, traditional office wear simply isn’t Lazkani’s aesthetic of choice. “I don’t actually feel comfortable in those tailored suit pants that women traditionally wear in business settings, so I choose not to wear them,” she said. “I prefer to wear a cute dress and a blazer.”

Mention the name “Sylvester Stallone” to a casual fan, and it’s probably unlikely that the first word they associate with the Rocky and Rambo star is “artist.” But in Sly, a new documentary about Stallone coming to Netflix this Friday, director Thom Zimny wants to make the case for Stallone, The Artist.
“I was looking at him as an artist from day one,” Zimny says during a recent interview. “I never came to him with a certain POV that defined who he was.”
Sly, which premiered earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, paints a portrait of Stallone through his work on screen and off, as a star, writer, and director in franchises like Rocky, Rambo, and, yes, even The Expendables. Zimny portrays his subject as a cinematic rebel who carved out a place in Hollywood by creating his own material—and grappled, in his work, with his contentious and at times abusive relationship with Frank Sr., his father.
At the center of the film is Stallone himself, who talks with Zimny in his home office, sometimes going through tapes on which he recorded old interviews. (The house, full of memorabilia, was being packed up at the time, because Stallone had sold it to Adele.) There are talking heads—Quentin Tarantino and Wesley Morris provide film history perspective, while the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Henry Winkler talk about their personal relationships with the man in question—but mostly this is the Sly show. (Well, there’s also, you guessed it, Frank Stallone.)
Zimny has tackled towering figures in pop culture before. He’s worked extensively with Bruce Springsteen and directed films and TV series about Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson. Stallone and his producing partner Braden Aftergood had seen some of Zimny’s work, and reached out to him as they were discussing doing a doc on his life. Zimny was a fan, he says, but he had no take on Stallone going into their first meetings.
“One of his initial conversations with me, he mentioned his father, and I realized suddenly that his father was a big part of of the work,” Zimny says. “This story turned out to be one of the biggest stories to tackle because his life was so rich, and there’s so much to unpack with his childhood and adolescence and rejection. It was pretty daunting in the editing process at times, because there were so many connections between Sly’s body of work and his actual life.”
