HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Deputies shot and killed a man in Channelview who was pretending to be a police officer, and opened fire on law enforcement, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

HCSO Asst. Chief John Nanny said deputies were responding to a call from a woman who reported a man acting suspiciously and claiming to be a police officer in the 15900 block of Ridlon near Sheldon Road.

When deputies met the man, they requested identification, which he was unable to provide, according to Nanny.

Nanny explained that the man then became “increasingly evasive and suspicious.” The man then pulled out a handgun and began firing at deputies, who returned fire and then took cover, according to HCSO.

HCSO said the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while no deputies were injured.

According to Nanny, the suspect was in plainclothes and not wearing any kind of uniform. Officials said they are working to identify the man.

SkyEye was over the active scene showing deputy vehicles and an ambulance at the scene of the shooting.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Texans made history tonight after winning the away Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night.

After finishing the first quarter trailing 0-3 to the Steelers, the Texans jumped back with a touchdown in the second quarter, leading the game at halftime with a score of 7-6. After no changes in score in the third quarter, the Texans leaped ahead with three touchdowns and a field goal in the fourth quarter, ending the game 30-6.

The Houston Texans’ future in the 2026 NFL playoffs depended on Monday night’s Wild Card matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Texans had never won a playoff game away from home, but Monday night gave them the chance to make history as the team now advances to the AFC divisional round. The Texans will face off against the New England Patriots in Foxborough on Sunday.

Before the game, Texans players told ABC13’s Greg Bailey that they were not afraid of being the underdog and planned to pull out a win in the face of a challenge

“That’s exactly what’s fun about it,” Texans Safety Calen Bullock said. “The whole stadium is against us. It’s going to be loud in there, we know, and we’ve gotta feed on each other’s energy, and that’s what we gone do.”

“You get a chance to, kind of, be the villain,” Texans Center Jake Andrews said. “It’s Monday night, it’s going to be freezing cold here in Pittsburgh. Great tradition, great history, Wild Card Round. I mean, I don’t know what more you could really ask for.”

The players not only had to face near-freezing temperatures, but strong winds were also a factor. It was said to be one of the toughest environments to kick in in the NFL, but that didn’t stop the Texans.

SUGAR LAND, Texas (KTRK) — Four aggravated robbery suspects who escaped the Sugar Land jail on Sunday afternoon are back in custody, the Sugar Land Police Department (SLPD) announced.

According to authorities, the suspects are 19-year-old Edmound Guillory, 18-year-old Devontae Simon, and 17-year-olds Desean Dillard and Clayton Johnson.

SLPD said the teenagers were involved in an aggravated robbery at a CVS at 1410 Crabb River Road, where they assaulted a store clerk and fled with a bag of cash just before 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Police said the suspects were first apprehended after a pursuit with Houston police officers, but managed to escape at approximately 4:50 a.m. when an SLPD jailer went to check on one of the teens.

Officials said when the jailer opened the cell, one of the suspects assaulted him and released the other prisoners.

The four suspects were located at the First Colony Church of Christ and taken back into custody at about 6:20 p.m., police said.

Authorities said the jailer was taken to a hospital, where he is stable.

All four suspects will be transported to the Fort Bend County Jail, where they will face additional charges ranging from escape to attempted murder, SLPD said.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A mother opened fire during an altercation involving juveniles at an apartment in north Harris County, leaving one juvenile hospitalized, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies said they responded to an in-progress call at an apartment complex at 15314 Kuykendahl Road at about 7:45 p.m.

According to preliminary information, a group of juveniles were fighting when a mother showed up and fired a weapon.

Authorities said one juvenile male was struck. He was taken to a hospital in unknown condition.

Several people were detained at the scene, HCSO said.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities say an HPD officer was stabbed in the head in Downtown Houston on Sunday night.

According to police, officers were responding to a mental health crisis call when the officer was stabbed at 300 Milam Street. Another responding officer shot the suspect, who died at the scene.

ABC13 was in downtown, where several streets around the Theater District were closed off with caution tape.

The officer is reportedly in stable condition.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities are investigating a crash on the North Beltway 8 that left a Pct. 4 deputy injured on Sunday evening, officials said.

According to deputy constables, a driver crashed into a patrol vehicle that was parked on the shoulder of the eastbound main lanes of the North Beltway at Veterans Memorial.

The deputy was inside the vehicle monitoring traffic when the crash occurred and suffered minor injuries, authorities told ABC13.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area, expect delays, and slow down and move over for emergency personnel on the roadway.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — For the third day in a row, Houston Airports has advised passengers to give themselves extra time to get through Bush and Hobby airports.

The airport system is now telling travelers to expect those delays until further notice.

Houston Airports says TSA wait times may be one hour or longer at Hobby because fewer screening lanes are open. At Bush, the wait could be more than three hours because TSA checkpoints are only open at terminals A and E.

United is urging passengers to check their luggage at terminal C and then go to terminal E by walking or taking the airport subway.

Houston Airports says the government shutdown has affected TSA staffing in Houston and across the country.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A suspect has been charged in connection with the Gulfton area nightclub shooting that left one dead and at least one other person injured, Houston police said.

Investigators said the violence unfolded early Sunday morning at an after-hours club in the Ashcroft Plaza, on Ashcroft Drive near Bellaire Blvd.

Authorities say they were initially told the shooting happened somewhere else, but have since confirmed that’s not the case.

ORIGINAL REPORT: 3 hurt, 1 killed in nightclub shooting near Gulfton, HPD says

Family members have identified one of the victims as 34-year-old Jesus Baca, a father of five.

Baca’s family told ABC13 he was shot in the head and has a bullet lodged in his brain. Doctors reportedly told them it cannot be removed without risking his life.

Baca’s sister, who asked not to be identified for safety reasons, said the family is praying for a miracle and wants justice.

As Baca receives medical treatment, investigators are working to determine why this happened.

Houston police say the incident first came to light when hospital staff reported two gunshot victims from the Gulfton area, one of whom investigators later learned was the suspect. The other victim, investigators say, is a person related to the shooter.

Later, officers got another call about a shooting at Ashcroft Plaza at about 6 a.m. At the scene, they reportedly found a person dead and Baca in need of immediate medical attention.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the man who was killed or the suspect charged in the case.

According to authorities, the shooting stemmed from an argument, but detectives are looking into what the conflict was about.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — An investigation is underway after multiple people were shot on Sunday morning, the Houston Police Department posted on social media.

The shooting took place in the 6900 block of Ashcroft Drive near the Gulfton area at the El Cabrina Nightclub, according to officials.

Officials said in total that one person has been confirmed dead, and three others are in the hospital.

BAYTOWN, Texas (KTRK) — Two children and a police officer were flown to the hospital after a deadly crash near the intersection of West Baker Road and Country Club Drive, officials said.

All lanes of West Baker Rd., from Village Lane to Country Club Drive, were closed as an investigation into the officer-involved accident was underway Thursday night, Baytown PD said.

While the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said the crash was deadly, Baytown PD could not confirm whether or not there was a fatality. The district attorney’s office did not say which party was killed in the crash.

Baytown PD said that the occupants of the van that were not airlifted, including the driver, were treated at the scene for their injuries. They also did not say what condition those who flew to the hospital were in.

SPRING, Texas (KTRK) — A large fire at a tire shop shut down Spring Cypress between I-45 and Lexington on Sunday afternoon, the Spring Fire Department said.

Heavy black smoke could be seen for miles as fire crews contained the blaze, Harris County Pct. 4 Constable Mark Herman said.

Deputies closed portions of the roadway for safety and urged residents to avoid the area, Pct. 4 said.

In an update at 2:40 p.m., the Spring Fire Department said the fire was out.

No injuries were reported, and investigators have not revealed what caused the fire.

KEMAH, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities are investigating after two men were shot in Kemah early Sunday morning.

Kemah police said officers responded to a shooting report in the 400 block of Bay Avenue at about 1:42 a.m.

At the scene, police reported finding two men with gunshot wounds. One man was shot in the face, and the other was shot in the shoulder. Both victims were taken to the hospital and are currently stable, authorities said.

Police said a suspect has been taken into custody and there is no ongoing threat to the community. Preliminary information indicates the shooting was an isolated incident and not a random act of violence.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A suspect is in custody after shots were fired during a chase in north Harris County on Monday, Pct. 4 deputies said.

According to Constable Mark Herman, deputies were chasing a suspect in the 2600 block of Spring Stuebner Road. Texas DPS troopers also assisted and attempted a PIT maneuver, but the suspect continued driving.

Pct. 4 said a deputy fired shots when the suspect began driving toward them.

The suspect was taken into custody with K-9 assistance and transported to the hospital for a dog bite, authorities said.

No deputies were injured.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A suspect is in custody after shooting at a METRO police officer and evading arrest on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

According to preliminary information, a METRO police officer tried to make a traffic stop near 1500 Wentworth around 4 p.m.

Police say the suspect displayed a weapon, fired a shot, and attempted to evade. An exchange of gunfire followed, and one officer sustained a grazing injury, investigators said.

METRO said the officer and the suspect were taken to the hospital. The officer is reportedly in stable condition, and the suspect is in custody.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Fire Department responded to a church fire on the southeast side that broke out on Saturday morning.

Firefighters responded near 12815 Fuqua at the Christ Church Apostolic building just after 7 a.m.

Officials swiftly upgraded it to a 2-alarm fire, HFD said.

ABC13 crews en route to the scene captured smoke visible coming from the Gulf Freeway. Smoke and ash could be seen falling from the building as firefighters began to extinguish it.

Fire officials reported that two firefighters were injured while attempting to pull hoses and battle the flames.

“We did have two firefighters who were hurt; they were both transported to the hospital. One had a broken ankle, and one had a fractured femur,” Deputy Chief Douglas Harrison with the Houston Fire Department said.

As fire crews work to recover, those in the church congregation are now working to pick up the pieces after they said they had just completed renovations.

“I know that we did have our roof replaced recently since that tornado that happened a few years ago, and we had plans in process of updating, and we were excited about it for our church and growing our church,” Mary Davis, a member of the church, said.

Now, the side walls are melted, the front of the building has been destroyed, and from the air, there is heavy smoke erupting from the building.

The fire department stated that the church, which was once a staple in the community, is likely a total loss.

“Very emotional because my kids and I come here every year for the pumpkin patch and for trunk or treat, and the members of the church are so welcoming and warm to us every year,” said Shannon Wilson, who works nearby.

Church members told ABC13 that while they work to determine where they will gather for service on Sunday, they are asking for the community’s support.

“No matter what has happened today, he’s going to see us through, and I ask that you stand with us, that you pray with us,” said Davis.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
