Data from recent surveys also indicated that Biden could effectively clinch a second term if he brought back Glow.” At press time, Biden had begun plummeting in the polls after Americans discovered the Hunger Games movies would be leaving Netflix at the end of the month.

As production for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things continues, the show’s official X (formerly Twitter) page has unveiled a new set image taken by series co-creator Ross Duffer. The newly-shared image sees Natalia Dyer’s Nancy Wheeler and Charlie Heaton’s Jonathan Byers in the backseat of Steve Harrington’s (played by Joe Keery) car, seemingly running away from a threat.
Production on the final season started earlier this year. Season 5 filming was supposed to begin last year, but it was delayed by more than seven months due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While Netflix has yet to announce the release date for the upcoming season, which is not expected to arrive any time soon considering it’s still in production, the original cast members are confirmed to be returning to Hawkins to mark the end of the Upside Down saga.

By this point in the movie, my jaw had permanently resided on the floor…but this scene made me want to get up and dance too.

The creators of Stranger Things know all about expectations. Ever since the series became one of the most successful shows in Netflix’s history—it was the most streamed program of 2022—every subsequent installment has had to try not to collapse under the heavy hopes of millions of fans. Anticipation for the first official Stranger Things stage production is similarly through the roof. Rarely has a theater seen such an ardent base rock up, demanding to be entertained.
The venue is London’s 1,028-seat Phoenix Theatre. (If you wanted to bring all of the adults who watched the first season within its first 35 days to see the play, it would need to be staged roughly 13,687 times.) Stranger Things: The First Shadow follows two comedies recently staged there: the beloved British farce Noises Off and the comedy puppet show Spitting Image: The Musical. “We chose a very small theater to do our very big play in,” says codirector Justin Martin, speaking from the snug “company office,” where a shower is visible behind him.
Olivier Award–winning director Stephen Daldry was the man with the provocative idea to bring Stranger Things, conceived by brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, to the stage. Around the time the fourth season was being written, Daldry teamed up with producer colossus Sonia Friedman to approach Netflix about what Martin calls its “catalog.” “The Duffers, to their credit, went, ‘You’re mad, but yeah, let’s see if we can find something within this world,’” says Martin, who has worked with Daldry for 16 years. “The honest truth is, the idea of turning the show into a play would’ve never crossed our minds,” the Duffers say by email. “This is fully the brainchild of Stephen Daldry.”
Producer Friedman and writer Jack Thorne, who are responsible for the mammoth theatrical success of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, were a reassuring presence. But First Shadow was complex territory. “The cycle of Potter was complete, and therefore we had access to the full canon [for Cursed Child],” Friedman says. She can’t think of another live show emerging mid-canon like this. Arriving while we wait for the series’ season five (its strike-delayed filming is due to start next month), First Shadow takes place before the first season, in 1959, and explores the high school past of Henry Creel, dramatizing how he became the murderous Vecna we meet in season four.
“The mythology is quite complicated,” says Friedman, speaking in the sing-song style of someone who has just stumbled on an r/StrangerThings Reddit thread. Thorne bowed out after one draft, passing the baton to Kate Trefry, who has written for Stranger Things since season two. “It’s just like a huge jellyfish of interlocking pieces,” Trefry says. “We wanted to hit this sweet spot where the play can stand on its own as an independent work but also connect to everything in four, but also be looking forward to five.” We meet younger versions of Joyce Byers, née Maldonado (Isabella Pappas), Jim Hopper (Oscar Lloyd), and Bob Newby (Christopher Buckley), who investigate some neighborhood pet deaths; we also meet Dr. Brenner (Patrick Vaill) and come to understand why he began his horrifying experimentation on Eleven and other children.
First Shadow is visually stunning and could easily make stars of its young cast, principally Louis McCartney, who plays Henry, and Ella Karuna Williams, who portrays new character Patty Newby. Martin says that they told casting director Jessica Ronane, “We want to find the next Ben Whishaw and Andrew Garfield.” The real star of the show, however, may be the often jaw-dropping stagecraft. The program claims that First Shadow is “the most technically advanced show in the West End,” an assertion that’s hard to test but easy to believe.
Chris Fisher and Jamie Harrison, who head up the illusions and visual effects team, took a trip to Vegas to see how the world’s biggest magicians pull it off. “When you’ve got a show of this scale and a show of this budget as well, you can really push the boundaries,” says Harrison.
Stranger Things is gearing up for its fifth and final season premiere. When viewers last left Hawkins, Indiana, the kids were grappling with a world-ending threat from Vecna, wreaking havoc and stealing residents’ souls. However, due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, production on the final season couldn’t commence. Fortunately, with the strike now resolved, the cast is back in action.
David Harbour, who portrays Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown) adoptive father, recently spoke about the show in an interview. Harbour provided an update on the filming of Stranger Things Season 5 and how quickly production came together post the actors’ strike.
“They literally called me, I think it was 10 minutes after the SAG thing on Twitter,” Harbour explained. He also shared that an assistant director called him to confirm his presence in Atlanta for filming. The actor is thrilled to be working again after the strike.
Stranger Things Season 5 will resume right where Season 4 left off, with the kids still battling Vecna and working to bring Max (Sadie Sink) out of her coma. Sometimes, art imitates life in a profound way. In a recent Variety cover story, Stranger Things star Noah Schanpp says he believes that he “would still be closeted” if he had never played Will Byers on the smash hit Netflix series.
Schnapp has played introverted Will Byers since 2016, when he was just twelve years old. From the onset of the series, there were indications that the character of Will might be gay, with Winona Ryder’s Joyce Byers revealing in the series premiere that other kids call Will “queer,” and that his absentee father had called him an anti-gay slur. At that point, Schnapp “didn’t really think twice about” Will’s sexuality. “I was so young; I barely even knew what that word meant,” he told Variety. “And I don’t even think I knew myself that I was gay.”
Over the course of the series, Will has come to terms with his sexuality. In a pivotal moment in season 3, Will’s best friend Mike (Finn Wolfhard) says to him, “It’s not my fault that you don’t like girls,” and Will’s major storyline in season 4 follows his his unrequited crush on Mike. In a 2022 Variety interview, Scnapp confirmed that the character of Will Byers was gay—a step that was met with overwhelming support from Stranger Things fans, and was instrumental in helping Schnapp understand his own sexuality.
“Once I did fully embrace that Will was gay, it was just an exponential speed towards accepting it for myself,” said Schnapp. “I would be in a completely different place if I didn’t have Will to portray, and to embrace and help me accept myself. I think if I never played that character, I probably would still be closeted.”
Eventually, Schnapp found the courage to come out—first to his twin sister, Chloe, and then to his close family and friends, including his Stranger Things co-star Millie Bobbie Brown. “I kept trying to do it in person with her, and it was too hard,” he said. “So then I just FaceTimed her one day in the middle of a Party City and I was like, ‘Millie, I’m gay.’ And she was like, ‘Oh, Schnapper! You told me finally!’”
Next, it was time to tell the world. Schnapp came out to the public via an eight second viral TikTok that he shared with his 31 million followers on TikTok. Schnapp said that after posting the TikTok which has received over 14 million likes, he received thousands of messages from friends, family, and fans congratulating him on coming out. “When I opened my phone at the end of the car ride, it was, like, a thousand texts of hearts and congratulations and rainbow flags,” says Schnapp. “I was crying. I was like, ‘I made it. I’m done. I don’t have to worry.’”
Schnapp will reprise his role for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Filming was set to begin this summer, but has been placed on hold due to the SAG strike. But according to Stranger Things co-creator Ross Duffer, Schnapp’s character “really takes center stage again in 5.” “This emotional arc for him is what we feel is going to hopefully tie the whole series together,” Duffer told Variety. “Will is used to being the young one, the introverted one, the one that’s being protected. So part of his journey, it’s not just sexuality — it’s Will coming into his own as a young man.”

Henry Creel’s dark past is coming to light in the Duffer Brothers’ forthcoming “Stranger Things” stage play, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.” The prequel, set in 1959 Hawkins, premieres in London’s West End later this year and will take a deep dive into Vecna’s chilling origin story. Like Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Will seeing their D&D nightmares realized, the theatrical production promises to take fans right back to the beginning of Hawkins’s deepest and most terrifying secrets — and then some.
On July 5, the show’s official social media accounts posted a preview clip for the play, teasing that the “Stranger Things” origin story just “might hold the key to what comes next,” too.
Written by Kate Trefry, staff writer and story editor for the TV series, the new play will be “rooted in the mythology and world of the Netflix global phenomenon.” The stage show will be produced by Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions. It’ll also feature the Duffer Brothers as creative producers and 21 Laps as associate producer. Stephen Daldry will direct with codirection by Justin Martin.

The “Stranger Things” play will cover many of fans’ biggest unanswered questions about Vecna. “Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries,” the play’s logline reads. “Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy . . . and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.”

If you don’t think the WGA Strike will affect you, consider this: what will happen when none of your favorite TV shows and movies are released when you expected they would be? What will happen when you tune in for a mindless episode of late-night comedy and there’s … nothing? What will happen when shows like Abbott Elementary are forced to shoot fewer episodes for the next season? Riots.
So, I have your attention now? Good. I’m sure you have questions…and I’m here to answer them.
Why Are The Writers On Strike?
This isn’t our first writers’ strike. From November 2007 to February 2008, American TV writers went on strike for the first time this century. This resulted in a $1.5 billion impact on the Los Angeles economy and cost the U.S. entertainment industry $500 million…And someone’s telling us we don’t need writers?
Essentially, the writers need to be paid more. The East and West branches of the WGA represent the writers of 11,500 movies and television series. And the WGA negotiates writer contracts with Hollywood studios roughly every three years. This year, things didn’t go so well.
While the studios believe they made a fair appraisal of the compensation increase, the writers believe they are being undervalued. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence, studios are mulling over whether or not writers are truly essential anymore.
The studios state that this is not the best time for the writers to see a major change in compensation. Meanwhile, the writers argue that streaming platforms have increased episode counts from the standard 8-10 run to close to 20 episodes a season and this severely cuts into their work lives.
But Why Not Use AI?
Look, I get it. AI helped you write that essay you procrastinated until the very last possible moment to write (don’t worry, I won’t tell). It generated that photo of you in 1800’s garb. It can make almost anything look real (it terrifies me to no end).
But what AI can’t do is capture true human emotion in the ways that a writer can. While Chat GPT may get you 800 words, it surely won’t tell the truth about a certain brand or product. AI isn’t funny, doesn’t have a sense of humor…in other words, breaking news: robots can’t relate to us as well as humans can.
I don’t know how we got to the point of such laziness and greed that we actually entertain the notion that writers are no longer critical in the wake of Artificial Intelligence. It’s insipid. But I do know that Artificial Intelligence can’t tell you about the time they flew cross-country only to crash a rental car in Los Angeles and almost got banned from the state after a Harry Styles concert.
Who Is Affected By The Writers’ Strike?
If this madness continues, the entire planet will be affected in some way or another. And this insanity looks like it’s going to go on for a while. Late-night talk shows have all stopped shooting – which means no one’s getting paid unless the hosts are paying out of pocket, and many are. Late-night programming is the most immediate effect of the strike.
Meanwhile, films can halt production, but since movies take over a year to produce, release dates will just be pushed back. However, daily running shows like soap operas – a dying industry in itself – will run out of episodes to release within a month.
With no one writing at all right now, there are no new seasons in the works. Netflix shows like Big Mouth, Stranger Things, and Unstable have shuttered their writers’ rooms. And on May 2, Abbott Elementary scribes weren’t allowed to start working on the next. Yellowjackets and Billions among other popular shows have also paused writing due to the strike.
As you can see, we are about to face some major consequences. Celebs and the rich and famous are picketing with the writers, where you can see faces like Quinta Brunson, Dan Levy, Rob Lowe, and more boasting signs for the WGA. Late-night hosts like Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel are paying their staff out-of-pocket for the time being.
What Now?
Writers are an essential part of storytelling, so we stand with the WGA and hope they get their bag ASAP. Plus, I will never forgive the Hollywood studios if I don’t see Quinta Brunson on my screen for endless-endless episodes. Get the deal done, Hollywood.
So the answer is no, AI can’t write like a real writer does. AI can’t create your favorite show the way humans can. And without our brilliant writers, there would be no shows.
The “Stranger Things” cast will be sitting this one out this year.
Actor Dacre Montogomery is the lone representative for “Stranger Things” at this year’s Emmys awards submissions due to restrictive guidelines for the award show voting period.
Despite the electrifying success of Season 4 Vol. 2 of the ’80s sci-fi adventure series last summer, which saw the “Stranger Things” cast fighting the sinister powers of dark entity Vecna, most of the show’s stand-out stars aren’t eligible for the ballot at this year’s awards ceremony.
The new rule occurred in June 2022 when the TV Academy eliminated the “hangover episode rule”, which gave grace to a series that premieres current-season episodes after the May 31 eligibility deadline but before the commencement of nomination round-voting.
The fourth season of the Netflix behemoth was divided into two parts. Vol 1, consisting of seven episodes, debuted on May 27, 2022, and was eligible for the 2022 Emmys, where it competed for 13 noms and took home five wins, most notably for stunt coordination, sound editing, and prosthetic makeup.
Vol. 2 dropped towards the beginning of this year’s eligibility period, beginning on June 1, 2022. The episodes, including the epic “Chapter Eight: Papa” and “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback”, were seen as orphan episodes by the Academy, which prevented the series from submitting nominations for the drama series category.
The new rule is a blow to actors Millie Bobby Brown and Joseph Quinn, who achieved rave reviews for their performances in the episodes.
Due to Montgomery’s appearance at the end of the “Piggyback” episode, the actor, who played the deceased Bobby Hargrove in the series, is the only star obtaining a nomination submission this year, where he’s competing against submissions from “The Last of Us” and “Succession”.
The remaining nomination slots for the series are for technical aspects, including period costumes and music composition.
As the writer’s strike enters its second week, the effects of not having some of most important people on set around are already starting to show: two of the biggest projects currently in production—Marvel’s Blade reboot and the fifth season of Stranger Things—have been put on ice (along with loads more movies and shows I’ll get to in a minute).

What’s the strike about?
Writers are deservedly fed up with loads of stuff, from the number of exploitative short-term contracts being offered in the age of streaming to low pay to poor residuals to the threat of machine-learning.
Posting on the official Twitter account of the Stranger Things writer’s room, the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, wrote:
Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong
Without its writers or showrunners, production has ground to a halt. Hell yeah. Also downing tools is Marvel’s new Blade movie, which has been shut down and “will restart…production once the strike is over”.
And those two are far from the only shows and films affected. A ton of live TV, especially late night comedy programs, have already gone dark, with The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Late Night With Seth Meyers, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!all having stopped filming.
And while networks and studios will be fine for a while coasting on material that had already been written and filmed, if the strike continues and that dries up, they’ll be in trouble. And even when the strike is over they’ll still be in trouble, because production backlogs and rescheduling will be an absolute nightmare.
Of course not every project and studio is hitting the pause button. HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon will continue filming, just without its writers, while Amazon’s second season of Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power will do likewise. Disney and HBO are among companies who have also ordered writers back to work, with the latter asking them to perform “non-writing” tasks.
The Writers Guild of America, the union calling the strike, figures that improving their member’s contracts would cost Hollywood a collective $430 million per year. There are already estimates this strike could do $2 billion worth of damage to the entertainment economy. That might seem like some easy sums, just pay these people what they’re worth, but these strikes are never about the money, they’re about control.

Fans of Stranger Thingsfell in love with Eddie Munson when the character debuted in Season 4. Now, the character is getting his very own origin story in a prequel book set before the events of the series’ fourth season.
Written by Caitlin Schneiderhan, Stranger Things: Flight of Icarus takes place in 1984, two years before the events of Season 4 of Stranger Things.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the book’s plot centers around Eddie as he meets a music producer named Paige. In desperate need of money to make his dreams come true, Eddie gets involved with his father’s shady business dealings.
Schneiderhan, who is currently working on the writing team for Season 5 of the hit Netflix show, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about her excitement to share a new part of Eddie’s journey with fans of the show.
“I’m so excited for fans to go with him on his journey towards becoming a hero, to experience the messy and uncomfortable decisions that led him to become the brave misfit we all know and love,” Schneiderhan told EW.
Schneiderhan also revealed why she thinks the lovable D&D-playing metalhead has resonated so much with so many fans of the show.
“Eddie is a person who is unfailingly, unapologetically himself, which is irresistible enough on its own. But add on the fact that he encourages the people around him to be the same? Who wouldn’t want to be friends with that guy?” Schneiderhan said.

Millie posted a video to make the special announcement as she shared the date of her book’s release, and gave a rough idea regarding what it is about. The 19-year-old actor said, “I’m thrilled to be announcing my debut novel, Nineteen Steps, which will be publishing on 12th September 2023. Nineteen Steps is a historical novel about an amazing, courageous 18-year-old woman called Nellie Morris, who lives with her family in Bethnal Green, in London’s East End, while the second world war rages on around them. When a tragic accident occurs during an air raid one night, the consequences are catastrophic – and life will never be the same again for Nellie,”
She elaborated further and shared that writing the novel has been a ‘special’ project for her. Writing Nineteen Steps has been a really special project for me. As per the Enola Holmes actress, the book is inspired by true events and her own family history. Ending the video, she said that she hopes that her fans will find the ‘true spirit of love and strength’ in her novel and that she cannot wait to share it with people. When we watch a TV show we love, it’s normal to feel emotionally invested in the characters. When something major happens to them — they find love, they experience loss, they have a moment of growth — we’re experiencing that with them. That’s why it’s such a big deal when a TV character dies. Even though we know that it’s just an actor playing a part on the screen, it’s still possible to feel totally devastated.
Of course, in the world of television, things are not always what they seem. Sometimes, a character is only presumed dead, but they’re actually still alive. Unless a character actually has a proper sendoff on camera — where you, as the viewer, can actually confirm they are dead — there’s always a chance that they’ll come back. Depending on the show, this can either be a wild, exciting plot twist, or a completely unrealistic turn of events.
It’s pretty obvious to tell when a character has been (temporarily) killed off for shock value. In some cases, a series just needs a good ratings boost — and nothing drives viewers to the screen like the potential of a fan-favorite character biting the dust. It’s all over. Long gone are the days where you log into your ex’s Netflix account and binge-watch the latest episodes of Stranger Things. Yep, Netflix took note that you were 1 of 10 people on the same account and eradicated password sharingcompletely.

As the saying goes, there’s a first time for everything—including major awards shows. Tonight, actress and newly-minted Chanel ambassador Sadie Sink made a splash in a look from the French house’s fall 2022 haute couture collection while attending her first-ever Critics Choice Awards, where the 20-year-old was nominated for Best Young Actress for her performance in Darren Aronofsky’s psychological drama The Whale.
“I’ve never been [to the Critics Choice Awards], so it’ll be a new experience,” Sink exclusively tells ELLE.com. “I always look forward to seeing my cast and crew members. Awards shows can feel a little bizarre, so it’s nice to have familiar faces close by.”
A great outfit probably doesn’t hurt either. Sink chose a black silk radzimir dress with a gold, silver, red, and black embroidered bustier, paired with Jimmy Choo shoes, Chanel fine jewelry, and a Chanel bag. “I think it’s a nice balance between modern and timeless,” she says of the look. “I also love having a full skirt, which is something I don’t normally wear. I actually tried this dress on during the summer, and have been wanting to wear it ever since. I feel like myself in it, which is the most important quality in everything I wear.”
Sink’s relationship with Chanel goes back several years—she first wore the brand to the Stranger Things premiere back in 2017. “Chanel has been there for me since the beginning, which is a surreal thing to say,” Sink says. “That team has watched me grow up, so it’s a pretty special relationship to have with a fashion house. As I’ve matured, so has my sense of style. I feel Chanel has played a big role in that evolution in terms of influencing my personal taste.”
As far as the getting-ready process goes, Sink doesn’t have a specific formula—at least not yet. “I don’t come to L.A. a lot, so I like catching up with my hair and makeup team [makeup artist Nina Park, hairstylist Ryan Richman, and nail artist Ashlie Johnson] while I’m getting ready. I rarely play music because I can’t handle the pressure of being a DJ.”

Life and art are coalescing for Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp, who has officially come out as gay six months after confirming his character Will’s sexuality.
“I guess I’m more similar to Will than I thought,” he captioned a TikTok video released on Thursday, which read: “When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know.’” Schnapp was lip-syncing to audio of someone saying, “You know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, will never be that serious.”
Schnapp, who is currently a freshman studying business at the University of Pennsylvania, addressed his character’s sexuality for the first time over the summer. “It was always kind of there, but you never really knew, is it just him growing up slower than his friends?” Schnapp said of Will’s lack of romantic story line to Variety. “Now that he’s gotten older, they made it a very real, obvious thing. Now it’s 100% clear that he is gay and he does love Mike [his best friend, played by Finn Wolfhard]. But before, it was a slow arc. I think it is done so beautifully, because it’s so easy to make a character just like all of a sudden be gay.”
Prior to Stranger Things’ fourth season, Schnapp had dodged questions about whether or not Will was gay, insisting that it was “up to the audience’s interpretation.” But that was all part of shielding the Netflix show’s ultimate reveal, the actor explained. “I mean, it’s pretty clear this season that Will has feelings for Mike. They’ve been intentionally pulling that out over the past few seasons,” he told Variety. “Even in season one, they hinted at that and slowly, slowly grew that storyline. I think for season four, it was just me playing this character who loves his best friend but struggles with knowing if he’ll be accepted or not, and feeling like a mistake and like he doesn’t belong. Will has always felt like that.”
In Stranger Things’ upcoming final season, Schnapp said that creators the Duffer brothers are planning to “focus more on Will,” and that he’s hoping for a proper “coming-out scene” for his character.
