    The Octopus Watch includes an icon-based smartwatch and an associated digital app with a selection of 2000+ icons to remind the child of his or her routine. A first-of-its-kind, the product is backed by childhood experts and an evidence base from clinical trials that include studies at McGill University in Canada.

    Research shows that a sense of routine and predictability are essential to children’s proper development, particularly children facing the difficulties of chronic health conditions. Developing a sense of autonomy, responsibility, and self-esteem is important for all children.     Two KnowAtom schools lead Massachusetts in science scoring on the 2018 Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), according to the most recent data from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)

    The J. T. Hood Elementary School and L.D. Batchelder Elementary School were two of only four schools in Massachusetts with more than 90 percent of its students scoring “Advanced” or “Proficient” on the most recent statewide science standards-based assessment.

    This is nearly double the state average, with just 48 percent of students across Massachusetts scoring proficient or greater.

    Out of 847 schools in Massachusetts, J.T. Hood ranked No. 1 in the state for Grade 5 students scoring ”Advanced,” with 68 percent of students reaching this category. Across Massachusetts, only 18 percent of fifth-grade students scored “Advanced.”

    J.T. Hood is also tied for No. 3 for students scoring proficient or greater, at 91 percent.

    L. D. Batchelder Elementary School is tied for No. 2 for Grade 5 students scoring “Advanced,” and No. 2 in the state for students scoring proficient or greater.

    Whitney Cleary, the fifth-grade science teacher at J. T. Hood, has been teaching using the KnowAtom curriculum for nine years and credits her school’s focus on making science a core subject, equal to ELA and math, for the gains in scoring and students’ overall enthusiasm for science learning.

    “We get science throughout our day,” Cleary said. “With that extra time, I’m allowed more opportunities to do hands-on activities, so we do a lot of maker space ideas and problem-solving. The hands-on experiments are the fun part. That’s where students at this age really shine. They get to see how the knowledge they’ve learned really connects to the world around them.”

    In what is expected to be its largest effort yet, the Avanza Network (“Avanza”) is holding its annual conference and community outreach event from Oct. 18-21, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas, bringing together MIT Latino alumni and friends from across the country to once again promote higher education to students and their parents, focused primarily on economically depressed or underrepresented communities. The group of volunteers consists of a diverse range of professionals, including engineers, doctors, educators, entrepreneurs, politicians, and scientists that plan to visit with thousands of students across over 20 high schools. Since its formation in 2011, the group has reached out to and inspired thousands of high school students in cities across the country. In recognition of Avanza’s outreach efforts, MIT just awarded the MIT Great Dome award to the group at its annual Alumni Leadership Conference in September 2018 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. 

    “Most of Avanza’s members grew up in low-income, underserved communities.  But we managed to overcome tremendous challenges and go to world-class universities like MIT. In effect, overcoming these complex situations equipped us with the determination necessary to tackle the immense challenges we face today.  But we didn’t do this alone,” says Marisa Zepeda, head of Avanza’s School Outreach Efforts. “We each had at least one person who inspired us, who pushed us to work hard and aim high. We graduated from college thanks to those who came before us and opened the door. It’s now on us to keep that door open.”

    Avanza’s mission of reaching out to students and conveying the transformational power of a college education is so important, now more than ever. Through our stories, we are telling these kids that regardless of your socio-economic status, with hard work and dedication, a college education is absolutely possible. We aim to inspire today’s youth to arm themselves with one thing that levels the playing field, a higher education.

    There are currently more than 600,000 jobs available in manufacturing in the US, with the expectation that number could grow to 2 million by 2025 because of an aging workforce and new technologies creating more jobs.

    Ms. Smith told the class to ask themselves if they think they are going to be successful and to think about what they need to do to make sure they are successful. “You can make that decision,” she said, “your environment doesn’t make that decision for you.”

    The Westside Master Class Series focuses on careers in STEM — science, technology, engineering, and math — and is held at the school on the last Thursday of every month.

    Ms. Smith gave our students valuable insight into why they need the STEM skills to compete in the real world and showed them a list of career opportunities that were possible with those skills.

    “There are people in the world,” she told the students, “who are successful and you have access to those people through the Master Class Series. You can speak to those people and take that information and reflect on it and how it translates to your life. What are you doing now, and what are you doing to change yourself?  Reflect on that then begin to take action.”

    Fifty years ago, the race to the moon was in full swing. Scientists and engineers were making huge leaps in technology to make good on President Kennedy’s promise of reaching the moon. As News-O-Matic covers the current events of 2018, it is also looking back at the news of 1968 that changed the world. And it’s inviting young readers to participate by conducting an interview with Apollo 7 astronaut Walter Cunningham!

    Throughout January, students can submit questions to Cunningham through News-O-Matic. The Q&A with the American hero will then be featured in early February. It’s an example of how the Daily News Just for Kids is transforming the news experience — by involving children with the editorial process and letting them ask the big questions.

    “This is how we make history come alive,” said News-O-Matic Editor-in-Chief Russell Kahn. “We are getting first-person accounts from 1968 to create powerful connections to our past for the next generation,” he added. “As a result, our users come back to read the news day after day and develop the regular routine of daily reading.” Kahn also said that kids who grow up reading the news on a daily basis become “better-informed global citizens and critical thinkers.”

    This feature is part of an ongoing series of 1968 anniversaries, each with rich opportunities for students to gain context to their world. There will be articles on the Mexico City Olympic Games, with its parallels to the recent protests in the NFL. There will also be features on America’s strained relationship with North Korea from 1968.

    Students will do more than just learn about the lasting impacts of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. They will participate in a writing contest to honor the legacy of Dr. King, 50 years after his death. It’s all part of the newspaper’s efforts to engage even the most reluctant readers.

    Through a new interest in computer science and wanting to learn more about artificial intelligence 13-year-old Kari Lawler from Solihull, UK set herself the challenge of creating her own virtual assistant like Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa. After purchasing a few books, she very quickly taught herself the necessary programming skills and within a few days it was apparent she was making considerable progress and amazingly within just one week she had a working prototype.

    Her family has stated it’s amazing what she has achieved at her age with very little resources. The fact her personal assistant responds in a similar manner to Siri and even has the same witty attitude when asked something out of the ordinary is marvelous. It’s also especially incredible when you consider what the large technology companies have probably spent on producing something not much different to what Kari has managed to achieve in such a short amount of time.

    Looking to the future Kari does plan to expand on her prototype and does see great value in this type of technology. She is currently working on making her assistant more realistic with more human like back and forth conversation. If achievable she thinks this type of virtual human interaction would be of great benefit in areas such as social care; like providing company to the elderly or assistance for people with dementia. Similarly, she sees it been used as a learning assistant for whole class teaching or for helping individual students in a school. Realistically though, she appreciates she has a long way to go before realizing this vision. However, in the meantime she would very much like to connect and learn through maybe a mentoring role with any individuals or companies in this field.

    About Kari
    Kari, now 14 is a very bright and gifted young lady excelling in English, mathematics and science. At the age of 11 she was diagnosed with ASD. Since her diagnosis and through no fault of her own she has had great difficulty in accessing an education in a mainstream setting which has resulted in her being out of school now for just over a year. The resistance Kari is facing is solely down to a complete lack of understanding of Autism. Even though Kari has never had any learning needs, behavioral issues, communication or high anxiety issues at school, schools approached just assume the worse based on stereotypes and dismissively say no without looking at her as an individual. Overall Kari wants nothing more than to be back in school doing what she loves the most, which is learning.

    Campers will delve into science experiments, computer programming and game design, and robotics and electrical engineering, all while having fun with their peers. “Stemtree’s summer camp is a win-win proposition,” explains Dr. Bell. “The children are happy because they are having a blast, and the parents are happy because not only are their kids engaged, safe, and happy, they are getting an edge for the upcoming school year.”

    September through June, Stemtree offers after-school programs at its Vienna location for elementary, middle, and high school students, with optional pick up at local elementary schools. Students enjoy snack time, playtime, and workouts in science, engineering and technology, plus support for homework, test preparation, and exam support (SOL, AP, IB) as needed.

    Stemtree also coordinates with local elementary school PTA/PTOs to offer school-based after-school programs to supplement or enhance the core science curriculum. Tutoring services in the fields of science, technology, and engineering are also available. Fun, science-related birthday parties can be hosted on request.

    2017 Camp registration is now open online at https://www.stemtree.com/camps. Spots available for Student Holiday Camp (March 24 and April 17), Spring Break Camp (April 10-14), and Summer Camp (sessions available from June 26 – August 25). Space is limited.
