    After three awards shows, all in Los Angeles, Hollywood’s A-list is heading across the pond. Yes, it’s time for the BAFTAs, the annual ceremony that honors the best in British and international cinema. Presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the BAFTAs are once again taking place at Royal Festival Hall in London’s Southbank Centre tonight, Feb. 22, but with a new host. This year, Alan Cumming is taking over duties from David Tennant, who hosted the ceremony for the past two years.

    Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another netted the most nominations at 14, followed by Ryan Coogler’s Sinners with 13 and Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet and Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, tied with 11 nods each. Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet and Michael B. Jordan are all up for Best Actor, while Kate Hudson, Jessie Buckley and Emma Stone are among the stars nominated for Best Actress. Along with the celeb-studded roster of nominees, the slate of presenters is equally impressive, including Aaron Pierre, Aimee Lou Wood, Alicia Vikander, Alia Bhatt, Bryan Cranston, Cillian Murphy, David Jonsson, Delroy Lindo, Emily Watson, Erin Doherty, Ethan Hawke, Gillian Anderson, Glenn Close, Hannah Waddingham, Karen Gillan, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Kerry Washington, Little Simz, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Milly Alcock, Minnie Driver, Monica Bellucci, Noah Jupe, Olivia Cooke, Patrick Dempsey, Regé-Jean Page, Riz Ahmed, Sadie Sink, Stellan Skarsgård, Stormzy and Warwick Davis.

    But before the best and brightest in film head into Royal Festival Hall, they’ll walk the always-glamorous BAFTAs red carpet in their most dazzling sartorial ensembles. Last year’s red carpet did not disappoint, with highlights including Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton, Mikey Madison in Prada, Monica Barbaro in Armani Privé and Lupita Nyong’o in Chanel—all custom, of course.   • I Miss When the Golden Globes Were Deranged

    If the 2026 Golden Globes had a theme, it was “Normal service restored.” After four months of Oscars season lifting up some contenders and humbling others, the Globes in many ways looped us back to where we thought we’d be in September: One Battle After Another cleaning up, Hamnet as the runner-up, Sinners as a crafts-only play.

    That message was sent early in the night with the ceremony’s first two categories, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. These were the two least predictable races on the film side, and they’d recently gotten more chaotic thanks to the Critics Choice Awards the weekend before. In Supporting Actress, which has been as wide-open an acting race as we’ve seen in years, Critics Choice went with Amy Madigan in Weapons — an extremely gonzo, extremely Internet-friendly pick. In Supporting Actor, the two nominees from One Battle After Another apparently split the vote at the CCAs, clearing a path for Frankenstein’s Jacob Elordi, a challenge to the conventional wisdom that 28-year-old hunks don’t win trophies. (Being a 28-year-old hunk is usually considered its own reward.)

    Neither of these wins repeated at the Globes, where the supporting prizes went to Teyana Taylor of OBAA and Stellan Skarsgård of Sentimental Value. For better and for worse, this duo feels like a much more plausible pair of Oscar winners: Taylor as an electric performer in the Best Picture front-runner, Skarsgård as a venerable European near the end of a long career. So plausible, in fact, that many pundits fingered each for the win at the beginning of the season. Taylor and Skarsgård were both worthy winners who gave memorable speeches, but taken together, their wins seemed like a sign of Globes voters preemptively aligning their tastes with the Academy’s, rather than delivering distinctive wins in their own right.

    Something similar occurred with Hamnet. Since the literary adaptation won the TIFF People’s Choice Award in September, its buzz had gotten awfully quiet. As Blank Check’s JJ Bersch wrote a few weeks ago, “it barely feels like the movie even exists at this point, weirdly.” Once Rose Byrne started taking critics’ prizes for her turn as a frazzled mother in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, fans wondered if she could possibly upset Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley, who since Telluride had been pegged as the race’s indomitable Goliath. Byrne’s hot streak continued when she won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at the Globes, but while she delivered a lovely, charming speech — which ended with the news that her husband, Bobby Cannavale, couldn’t make it because he was attending a reptile convention in New Jersey — it was probably the last speech she’ll get to give this season. As expected, Buckley won the other Best Actress trophy, and Hamnet’s 11th-hour Best Drama win seemed to prove the film does indeed have enough juice for the Irish actress to sweep from here on out.

    As will be the case in a three-hour show, there were a couple small surprises. Brazil’s The Secret Agent taking Best Foreign-Language Film, alongside star Wagner Moura’s win for Best Actor in a Drama, indicates that the hierarchy of power in the Neon universe may be about to change. Is the movie the new front-runner for the International Film Oscar, and if so, what does that mean for the presumed heavyweights in that category, It Was Just an Accident and Sentimental Value, and their chances of sneaking into Best Picture? (Or is this just a case of Brazilians, the largest international contingent in the Globes’ membership, having a home-field advantage at this ceremony?)

    Now, there’s nothing wrong, exactly, with any of the Globes’ picks. If they wanted to vote for Stellan Skarsgård, let them vote for Stellan Skarsgård! (Especially since Skarsgård wasn’t nominated at SAG, giving his win Sunday night a little extra weight.) It’s just that this is the exact opposite of the way the Globes used to be. Usually, they’d be the ones injecting a little insanity into the race, like when they handed Best Supporting Actor to Aaron Taylor Johnson in Nocturnal Animals in a year when Moonlight’s Mahershala Ali was winning everywhere else. Or, that same night, awarded one of their Best Actress awards to Isabelle Huppert for Elle when everyone assumed Jackie’s Natalie Portman had it in the bag. In an alternate awards-season universe, it would have been the Globes who gave Jacob Elordi and Amy Madigan their trophies and made us all question reality. Now, after having been canceled and reborn, the show has lost its signature sense of derangement, and there’s something a little sad about that.

    Still, the old Globes live on in one respect. By snubbing Sinners in Best Drama, handing it a consolation-prize Box Office Achievement award, and punting its only other win (Best Score) to a commercial break, Sunday’s ceremony continued the proud Golden Globes tradition of disrespecting Black-led films. That’s one piece of awards-season heritage they just can’t quit.

    Deep Blue Sea Is Still One of the Greatest Shark Movies 25 Years On

    Deep Blue Sea, a big dumb movie about big smart sharks, is still an entertaining action horror 25 years after it first swam onto our screens.

    Director Renny Harlin has had a wild career in action and in horror. There are highs (The Long Kiss Goodnight, Cliffhanger) and lows (Cuthroat Island, Exorcist: The Beginning). Deep Blue Sea didn’t exactly end up being lauded as a cheesy horror-laced gem like its fellow 1999 blockbuster The Mummy, but in the realm of shark movies? It’s still got teeth.

    It sees researchers at an underwater facility trying to find the cure for Alzheimer’s disease by studying the regenerative qualities of sharks’ brains. Unfortunately, it’s crunch time for the project financially, and the head honcho, Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson), is coming to see how close they are to a breakthrough.

    It turns out they’re very close. However, in typical movie scientists’ thinking, the head researchers (played by Stellan Skarsgard and Saffron Burrows) dope the test sharks to achieve the result. Consequently, the Mako sharks are not only bigger and faster but smarter, too. So when a violent storm and a gnarly accident occur, the smart sharks take the chance to get out and chomp on any poor souls unlucky enough to be in the way. Therefore, the choices for the crew are simple. Get to the surface, drown, or get eaten.

    The Shark Movie Problem

    Make no mistake. Much like exorcism movies, Shark movies have been chasing an unattainable high for some time. Genre standouts that transcend said genre, such as Jaws and The Exorcist, make it extremely difficult to follow. I have genuinely lost count of how many times I’ve had hopes for a shark movie and been bitterly disappointed. And it’s been almost 50 years since Jaws and its mechanical shark set the benchmark. There have been a lot of frankly awful spins on the template in that time.

    So, admittedly, the bar is pretty low for shark movies to clear beyond Jaws. There’s more to it than just because Jaws exists (the change in how sharks are perceived especially). But misunderstanding what made the idea of colossal monsters of the deep lurking beneath your feet in the ocean so damn terrifying is a big part of it.

    While Deep Blue Sea is undoubtedly quite goofy at times and clearly uninterested in abiding by actual shark behavior (some of which is admittedly explained away by their enhanced abilities), it doesn’t forget the golden rule. Feed on the fear of the deep and the things in it.

    The scenes underwater where the human crew are at the mercy of the killer beasts have tension to them. Especially those in open water where Thomas Jane’s grizzled shark wrangler Carter Blake plays a game of chicken. On a personal level, there’s a moment that filled me with dread that wasn’t inherently scary itself. Carter swims through a mesh tunnel in the facility’s caged-off section of the sea. When he arrives at its exit, the shot shows just how insignificant that tunnel feels in comparison to the cavernous blue murk surrounding it. Deep Blue Sea may be a largely daft chomper romp, but it has its moments to make thasalaphobia sufferers uncomfortable. Credit has to be given for the often superb use of space.

    Disaster in the Deep Blue Sea

    It also mixes in a little bit of the classic disaster movie format. After some shark shenanigans, the underwater facility begins to flood and crumble. The crew traverses all manner of perilous situations, trying to get to the surface whilst the sharks gain more ground (well, water). It may not have been enough on its own to make a competent disaster flick, but it adds something to the monster movie format that rules the movie’s structure. Also, it helps that the facility itself is a great setting.

    Perhaps most importantly, Deep Blue Sea moves along with the same single-minded focus of a shark. It gets the guff out of the way quickly. From there, it’s a straight shoot of sharks vs. humans vs. crumbling undersea facility for over an hour. Pure popcorn delight.

    I do not want to sound old, but the kind of film Deep Blue Sea is increasingly difficult to find in modern-day cinema. Sure, there are plenty of genuinely low-rent homages to the action/horror hybrid. The sequels are underwhelming proof of that. On this scale, there’s simply nothing quite like it. It may not have The Mummy‘s swagger, but it’s just as gloriously entertaining in its own way.

    As was foretold in Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice” music video, in which Christopher Walken danced to a line from Dune (“Walk without rhythm, It won’t attract the worm”), the actor would be destined to join Frank Herbert’s sci-fi universe in Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed adaptation. In fact, Dune: Part Two brought Walken out of a four-year acting break.

    In an interview with Vanity Fair, Walken discussed why he took on the role of the formidable Emperor who sets in motion the fall and rise of House Atreides in Dune. “I had, of course, seen the first Dune a number of times. I loved it, and I admired [Villeneuve’s] movies. Arrival, I thought, was wonderful. And to be with all those terrific actors—Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin, Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, and Stellan Skarsgård—and to go to Budapest, which is a beautiful city. And of course, that’s what I do for a living. It was only, I think, three weeks. So, everything about it was attractive,” he said to the magazine.

    Walken, who had somehow not yet been scooped up by a sci-fi epic, also revealed that he was almost in Star Wars but the timing wasn’t right. “I think it was for Han Solo,” Walken shared. “Yes, I auditioned for it. And if I’m not mistaken, my partner in the audition was—I think this is true—it was Jodie Foster. I think we did a screen test. I’m not sure we did a scene. Maybe we just sat in front of, in those days, those old videotape cameras… I did audition for Star Wars, but so did about 500 other actors. It was lots of people doing that.” But as was fated by “Weapon of Choice,” Walken was all along meant to be the Emperor in Dune.

    Dune: Part Two is now out in theaters.
