  • As ‘Outlander’ Ends, Caitríona Balfe Enters a Brave New World—One She’s Long Been Building For Herself

    Now that the horny antics of Heated Rivalry are sweeping the globe, what would Balfe tell breakout stars Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams about navigating their newfound fame? “I haven’t seen Heated Rivalry yet,” she admits. “But it seems that phenomenon far eclipses our show. You got to just be grateful for the experience,” Balfe continues, adding with a laugh: “And make sure that you send messages to your parents not to watch certain episodes.”

    And a word of warning from one half of TV’s most beloved onscreen couples to another: know when to log off. “The fans have been beyond generous, sending so much love towards us, and initiatives we’ve supported. That has far eclipsed the negativity,” says Balfe. But she’s also learned the value in staying offline. “In the beginning, we were all so much more active on social media, or at least I used to be back in the day before it became a cesspool,” she says. “It’s hard not to absorb some of it. But then you quickly realize these people aren’t in my life. My life is not online.”

    These days, Balfe utilizes her social platform to raise awareness for causes close to her heart, including the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “I’ve always been politically literate and voiced my opinions before I was an actor,” she says. “If you’re standing up for children, that just goes without saying. That to me isn’t even being political, that’s being a human being. We should all be able to just blanketly agree that children should be protected. That shouldn’t be picking a side. If you’re alive at this moment, you should be able to just live how you want.” Although Balfe is inclined to get politically involved, each actor must make that decision for themselves, she adds, “I don’t think that we should be policing each other.”

    Balfe often felt a calling towards advocacy during her eight seasons on Outlander. At the start of season five, she and Heughan became executive producers alongside mainstay EPs Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, and Matthew B. Roberts. “The writers changed every season. Sam and I were the throughline that had to filter all these different voices that were coming in so that the character remained the same throughout,” she explains now. “Like with any job, if you’re going to be somewhere for a decade, you need to keep growing. You need to keep adding to your skillset, otherwise you become stagnant.”

  • The Nowhere Man: Starz unveils new action hero in South Africa

    Starz is debuting a new action hero in the combat thriller arena with the premiere of The Nowhere Man. The series will follow Lukas, a former mercenary with PTSD, as he battles the criminal underworld in Johannesburg, South Africa. The network is loading the clip with this show and is ready to deliver action and high-octane excitement.

    “The Nowhere Man takes you on a fun, thrilling ride. You get to see me in a totally different way from Tasha, and I think once you’re locked in by the love, drama, and action, you’re going to want more,” said Naturi Naughton-Lewis, Actress and executive producer of The Nowhere Man.

    The Nowhere Man debuts on Friday, January 16, on Starz. Naturi Naughton-Lewis and Bonko Khoza lead the cast. The show is directed by Gareth Crocker and executive produced by Chris Lawrance, Xavier “Two” Lewis, and Naturi Naughton-Lewis. Khoza portrays Lukas, and Naughton-Lewis plays Ruby, an American mercenary who travels to Africa and opens a shelter where the show takes place.

    The Nowhere Man begins with Lukas collecting scrap metal to make into works for the local shelter. This is his attempt to stay under the radar as he deals with his PTSD from his mercenary missions with the special forces brigade. One morning, Lukas witnesses a home invasion and intervenes, saving a woman’s life. This begins a chain of fights that wrestle him back into a world he was trying to break free from. Lukas now has to use his combat skills to discover who was behind the home invasion and face the dark secrets of his past.

    “The whole story gives people a chance to see what it means to start again and pivot in a way where you redeem yourself. Lukas is recovering from a lot of trauma in his past, but he learns how to use his talents for good,” said Naughton-Lewis.​

    The Nowhere Man was shot in South Africa. What appealed most to Khoza and Naughton-Lewis about this project is how the Nowhere Man will display the continent as vibrant and modern. Khoza explains that people’s views of Johannesburg and Cape Town are outdated. Many do not know that cities in Africa are buzzing metropolitan spaces. The lead actor hopes The Nowhere Man can change people’s perception.

    “I think these are the real representations of what South Africa is in 2026. I think for a long time, the look of Africa has been owned. It was returned to us, and people got to see the truth. I think the Nowhere Man does that,” said Bonko Khoza, lead of the Nowhere Man.

    According to the Power actress, what attracted her most to this role was the opportunity to be part of a narrative that showcases South Africa. Naughton-Lewis believes that The Nowhere Man will reintroduce her as an executive producer while introducing Khoza and the cast. She believes this can bridge the gap between our communities.  ​

    “Having a superstar like Naturi and Starz picking the show up feels like a global takeover. The idea of showcasing South Africa and Johannesburg to the highest quality possible and putting together an ensemble of South Africa’s most talented actors are the reasons I’m so proud of being a part of this project,” said Khoza.

    Starz wants The Nowhere Man to be an explosive launch for its 2026 slate of shows. With intense gunfights and heated fight scenes across South Africa, Khoza and Naughton-Lewis are confident viewers will want more after each episode.  

    “People should watch the Nowhere Man, because it’s probably one of the best projects to come out of Africa. It’s an action that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and a thrilling ride that shows great things are coming from Africa. I can’t wait to see what the future holds,” said Khoza.

  • Joseph Sikora Is Ready for More Death to Fuel the Power Universe

    With Tommy Egan’s Chicago era drawing to a close, bloodshed is guaranteed: “People need to die on Force for the Power world to keep expanding.”

    As of Friday’s season-three premiere of Power Book IV: Force, Joseph Sikora has been playing volatile drug kingpin Tommy Egan in the Power universe for 12 years. With the final season of Force, he’s wrapping up Tommy’s Chicago era. “I gotta tell you, it’s a mixed bag,” Sikora says, explaining that he’s sad to say good-bye to Chicago but thrilled at the “web of entanglement” Tommy finds himself in this season.

    The premiere episode, “Do or Die,” picks up moments after last season’s finale, when Tommy learns that his criminal rival, Miguel (Manuel Eduardo Ramirez), has kidnapped Tommy’s girlfriend, Mireya (Carmela Zumbado) — who also happens to be Miguel’s sister. Tommy is ready to go to war, but Mireya talks her way free before Tommy arrives. They force a temporary peace until Miguel’s plan to later assassinate the seemingly unkillable Tommy fails. “Do or Die” concludes with Tommy opting against his usually violent nature in favor of playing some kind of long game, confronting associate turned FBI informant Vic (Shane Harper) on his way out of town. Tommy has a new job for Vic: “You’re going to be my inside man in the Feds.”

    For now, everyone has escaped death, but nobody is ever really safe in the Power universe. “In a lot of ways, Tommy reminds me of the gangsters of old, like Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Whitey Bulger, some of these guys who just didn’t die and lived to be old men and were still gangsters,” Sikora says. “Tommy is la cucaracha, he gets low, so he’s gonna live, but that can’t always be the case. At the end of this season, what we’re going to do will allow for the future to happen. People need to die on Force for the Power world to keep expanding.”

    Season two’s cliffhanger ending made it seem like Tommy was on his way to losing his third girlfriend to a violent end. The season-three premiere reveals she survived, but was there a chance Mireya wouldn’t make it, or would that have felt like piling on Tommy too much?
    If we had more seasons, it could have changed things. Mireya had to be who she was at the time. She had to dedicate her life to Tommy and say, “I’m with you, all in.” Then she had to be stolen, because we have to see if Tommy is all in for her. In classic Power fashion, as soon as Tommy got what he wanted, it’s taken away.

    Based on his history, it feels impossible for Tommy to have it all.
    Nobody gets their cake and eats it too. Even with that money, do you think Jeff Bezos is happy all of the time? No way. All these other things create problems. For Tommy, you can’t sell copious amounts of drugs and have no repercussions. You can’t be involved in this gangsterism and just think, Hey, I’m gonna live, and if I do, I’m gonna live happy. Because you’re not. I mean, did Tony Montana teach us nothing?

    Scarface is full of life lessons.
    I think Tommy has seen that movie 300 times.

    When Tommy arrives at Miguel’s place and believes Mireya might be dead, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Tommy that unhinged or scared — and scared is not a word I’d ever use to describe Tommy. Were you attempting to tap into a type of vulnerability we haven’t seen from him before?
    That was showrunner Gary Lennon’s influence. He was allowing Tommy to be a little bit like Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, when he is out-of-his-mind angry and scared that Stella is gone. This entanglement with Miguel’s gang is so great. Miguel is a worthy adversary for Tommy because Manuel Eduardo Ramirez scares the hell outta me in real life! He’s such an intense actor. It’s a joy to work opposite him.

    In this episode, I saw a lot of Ghost (Omari Hardwick) in Tommy, from his strategic thinking to his selfish treatment of Diamond. What felt right about slightly turning him into someone whom he both loved and hated?
    Ghost once said to Tommy, “We’re two men with one voice, two sides of the same coin.” With Tommy, the audience felt, Oh, he can’t keep up with the strategy that Ghost can. Until we get into Force, where Gary harked back to some of these really interesting things we learned about Ghost and Tommy and said, “Ghost did all this, but let me show you that Tommy can do it too.” If Diamond is now like Tommy was, is that in turn setting up that Diamond is able to do everything that Tommy can? To me, that’s the bigger question. That’s the excitement of the third season, because, no matter how much Diamond’s brother Jenard is pulling him in one way, like with Ghost and Tommy, where do his loyalties ultimately lie?

    Tommy spares Vic’s life in favor of using him for information. This goes back to Tommy’s growth in taking the long view, but do you think he’s being naïve in assuming he can easily manipulate this dangerous situation?
    I think that it’s smart, but if I were a fan, I would hope that Tommy is not overestimating his ability to control — not only Vic but the AUSA Stacy Marks. I hope he’s not underestimating everything that will go into using Vic as a mole. Vic is all these little animals: a mole and a rat! But he’s also dangerous. And shout-out to Shane Harper for playing him so real and investing in being the rat. It takes a lot for a young actor, this handsome fellow, to be like, Oh, I’m gonna be this slimeball character.

    Season three is the conclusion of Tommy’s story, for now, but there’s talk of a new series, Power: Legacy, that will focus on Tommy and his nephew, Tariq. What intrigues you about circling back to the original Power world and that complicated dynamic with Tariq? They didn’t leave things in the best place in the Power Book II: Ghost season-one finale.
    First, Tommy has to survive season three of Force. But Michael Rainey Jr. has done a wonderful job developing the character of Tariq, who is every bit as treacherous and intelligent as his father. And Tommy would be either a worthy adversary or a worthy guide and partner. There can always be forgiveness within a family, regardless of what’s said. I’d love to see what would happen with a reconnection of these two characters. Tariq is now highly educated, has done wetwork, has dealt a lot of illicit narcotics. But Tommy was raised differently. Tommy is a product of the street. It will be interesting to see how they complement each other and what they can learn from each other. There’s innate conflict within that story as much as there is innate love.

    Force is ending, but we’re about to go back to the beginning of Tommy’s criminal enterprise with the Tommy-and-Ghost prequel, Origins. What’s your relationship going to be like with this new series?
    I would like to direct some episodes. I just joined the DGA and directed an episode of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, so I think I can be active. Someone recently suggested that I be the voice-over on Origins, like 50 is on Kanan. So, Starz, if you’re listening …

    Fans are eager to learn about The Long Walk’s digital and streaming release dates. Directed by Francis Lawrence, The Long Walk is based on Stephen King’s book of the same name. The movie hit theaters on September 12, 2025. But for those who want to rent, buy, or stream it, here are all the currently available details on when it can be watched from home.

    When will The Long Walk get its digital release date?

    Based on Lionsgate’s previous digital releases, the movie could be available on premium video on demand (PVOD) three to four weeks after its theatrical release. This means the movie may be available to rent somewhere between early and mid-October.

    This pattern would fall in line with the digital release dates of Lionsgate’s other big 2025 movies, Flight Risk and From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. Both films had their digital releases within three weeks of their theatrical releases. However, the digital release date for The Long Walk may vary based on its performance in theaters.

    Here’s when The Long Walk could be released on streaming

    Lionsgate releases its movies for streaming anywhere between three and four months after their theatrical release dates. This puts the streaming release date window for The Long Walk between late December 2025 and early January 2026.

    The movie is likely to stream on STARZ, which has an exclusive deal with Lionsgate for streaming their films. While The Long Walk may not be limited to STARZ, it is certainly set to hit the streaming service first before arriving on any other platforms. Both Flight Risk and World of John Wick: Ballerina took over four months to be available for streaming.

    The story of The Long Walk takes place in a dystopian future where a group of teenage boys takes part in an annual stamina event called The Long Walk. The contestants must walk at a minimum speed of 4 miles per hour without stopping, and if they do, they’ll be shot dead. The last one remaining will be awarded “The Prize.”

    The film stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, and Tut Nyuot, among many others, with Mark Hamill as The Major.

    The curtains are closing on Power Book II: Ghost, but before they do, Lovell Adams-Gray poured all he had into arguably the series’ most complicated character.

    At midnight, Gray will be one of several STARZ in the conclusion of the spinoff series as the finale airs, and he told BOSSIP that it’s been an honor playing Dru Tejada who stepped up to fill a void left by his father after his mother Monet (Mary J. Blige) killed him.

    “He makes his own choices and saved his family,” said Lovell referencing a pivotal moment in the show when Dru decides to join forces with Detective Carter (Michael Ealey). “That’s a huge void to fill, and standing on his own feet is a part of his maturing and growing up.”

    Gray also dished to BOSSIP about the honor of working with his cast mates and the writing team who’ve inspired him to dig deep to bring the ferocity of Dru to life.

    “All the Tejadas have a really complex narrative and storyline. The actors, Woody, Latoya, even Zeke, they’ve all brought an added layer to their characters, which has inspired the writers to dig even deeper. They go deep every time, so I have to go deep too.”

    Speaking of going deep, Dru has been deeply affected by tragedy after tragedy—his father’s death, having to kill his lover Gordo Castillo, and enduring heartbreak with his ex, Everett.

    As the clock ticks closer to midnight, fans are hoping for a glimmer of happiness for him.

    “I think the more Drew grows his hair out, the happier he is,” Lovell joked to BOSSIP, giving a subtle hint that Dru may find some peace in the final episodes. “So if the hair is growing, you know, okay, Drew’s feeling a little bit better today.”

    Still, while Dru’s hair might be growing out, he’ll face yet another tragedy; the death of his mother Monet who was killed in a hail of bullets by Noma at her (sham) wedding to Cane.

    And while Dru and his big brother Cane (Woody McClain) typically have bad blood and appear to be polar opposites, viewers might see them team up to get vengeance.

    “It’s been a huge gift working with him,” said Lovell about McClain. “He cares so much about the work and his character, and we both get to go deeper as artists. Kane may have a hardened exterior, but his interior is more empathetic and softer. On the other hand, Dru, who may seem softer, has an interior that is hardening.”

    Way back in 2016, Vulture wrote of the now mostly forgotten Netflix series Bloodline that “Netflix did something it’s rarely done in its four-year history of original programming Wednesday: It canceled a show.” These days, updates on streaming series reckon with how “platforms invented cruel and unusual ways to cancel them.” Well, the great cancel-off of 2024 is officially on its way, and no show is safe. Without reputable sourcing on streaming audience numbers, there’s little way to know if your favorite piece of art content is actually a hit or just a hit with your friend group/online bubble/in-laws. So we end up with cancelations like Our Flag Means Death, which, based on the amount Taika Waititi fans talk about it, sure seemed like a hit. This Fool was canceled on February 14, which (besides Valentine’s Day) was Ash Wednesday. Time to think about your sins, execs. And now, we’re saying goodbye to Tokyo Vice (thankfully, we’ve prepared a speech ahead of time.) Below, a list of every TV show canceled so far in 2024.

    What’s it about? Based on the book of the same name, this comedy stars Chris O’Dowd. It takes place in a small town that, per Apple TV+, “is forever changed when a mysterious machine appears, promising to reveal everyone’s true potential. Soon residents start changing jobs, rethinking relationships, and questioning long-held beliefs — all in pursuit of a better future.”

    What’s it about? TikTok stars Dixie and Charlie D’Amelio try to expand their brand, Kardashian-style. They’re joined in this effort by parents parents Heidi and Marc. According to Deadline, the choice not to renew came from Hulu, but was supported by the fam.

    What’s it about? Per Max, the show follows “Adelstein’s (Ansel Elgort) daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo in the late 90s, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem.” During a PGA producing panel in June, the producers revealed that the Max noir thriller is closing up shop. Creator J.T. Rogers and director Alan Poul said in a statement, “Not only did they give us these two seasons, they said yes when we asked to end season one with a series of cliffhangers, and they said yes when we asked for two extra episodes so we could land the plane in the way J.T. had always envisioned.”

    Look, you can’t be doing a sexy gay history show and suddenly drop us into a random room with a man we’ve never seen before who talks with some other new guy about the Spanish and a battle we also have no idea about. These men don’t even make out. Would I want them to? Probably not, but it would be better than their inscrutable conversation, which is followed by one of them stabbing the other in a particularly violent way.

    We eventually discover that Man No. 1 is Sir Walter Raleigh (the stabber, not the stabbee). That’s right, the Sir Walter Raleigh from Elizabethan times! Here, he is 66 and just back from Guyana, where he was searching for El Dorado. Okay! On the way to do that, he attacked the Spanish, when he specifically promised not to (there is a peace treaty). Now the Spanish ambassador, Count Gondomar, is mad and demands the banishment or execution of Raleigh.

    The show is pretty explicit about Raleigh and his men attacking first, although apparently it’s more complicated than that (Raleigh appears not to have been there?), and Raleigh comes off like a real asshole here. His real purpose in the episode, though, is for George to come into his own and start wielding real political power through James. Even though I found the Raleigh plot boring, I’m mainly mad that I was expected to be able to tell Gondomar and Raleigh apart. They’re both new characters! They both have beards! When Gondomar came in, I was like, “Ah, I see the stabby man from the boat has cleaned himself up.” Then they bring in Raleigh, and I had to back up all the way to the beginning of the episode to verify that he, in fact, was stabby boatman. It doesn’t help that this episode felt particularly dimly lit. So it’s just bearded men in shadows.

    But onto the characters we know and love: Mary is moving up in the world. James buys her a house in London and creates her Countess of Buckingham, telling the court to “smash your fat little palms for the great star of our firmament.” Overall this week’s episode was a bit of a letdown since the rest of the show has been so solid, but “smash your fat little palms” was a highlight. Mary has plans, which I probably shouldn’t even need to say at this point. Of course she has plans. What else would she be doing? Sitting somewhere, enjoying life?

    Mary wants George to marry Katherine Manners, the daughter of the Earl of Rutland, mainly (only) because she is Extremely Rich. This works out great for Katherine, a.k.a. Katie, because she thinks George is supercute. Her father is not into the idea and neither is George, so both of these obstacles must be overcome. Mary also remains determined that John’s marriage to Frances will work, even though Frances is banging randos at court and John has proven himself to be capable of extreme violence and in need of help. I’m not on board with this one, Mary. Neither is Sandie, who, after helping Frances through an abortion, demands that Mary set Frances free, or Sandie will leave. Lesbian love wins again, and Frances is able to leave.

    Meanwhile, George is getting all full of himself despite his frequently proven incompetence. Mary encourages him to put himself forward, and while that does get him a seat on the Privy Council (NICE), he immediately ruins it by acting like an idiot. Literally, the first thing he adjudicates is Raleigh and how he has pushed them to the brink of war with Spain. Raleigh goes up to George because he can tell he’s a soft target, and he’s all “I was so close to finding El Dorado, but here I am, back in England. My son died in this fight against the Spanish, and his dying wish was definitely that I go back and look for more cities of gold that I made up in my mind.” George says “SOLD” and everyone on the council is super embarrassed for him. James is furious, and it takes some time for George to get back into his good graces. Now the U.K. is even closer to war with Spain, damnit, George.

    Speaking of James, we see his son Charles some more! Hello, Charles! Charles will eventually become a failed king, but for now, he is a sulky youth who hates George. To be fair, he thinks Queen Anne is dying and that James doesn’t care, but instead only cares for George. Not great of James, if true. Anne has been coughing ominously, so that doesn’t bode well for her. When Mary speaks with her, though, we get some good intel about her husband. Mary wants to know how she can get closer to James, and Anne intimates that James was brought up by men in a world of men, and women do not really matter to him. Interesting.

    Mary isn’t sure how to move this “George marrying the Earl of Rutland’s daughter” idea along, but her daughter Susan, it turns out, also has plans. Susan’s plans involve marrying a baron’s son, which can’t happen until they have Katie Manners’s money for a dowry, so Susan fakes a letter from John asking George to visit, then the servants lock George in a bedroom with Katie. This is dastardly behavior, but again, George is very annoying. I also like Katie, so I approve. Katie says if they stay together overnight, her father will have to support a marriage. She tells George that she knows who he is and she’s fine with it, which he can’t guarantee from someone else. Otherwise, she’ll have to marry a rando that her father chooses, which does not sound fun. Katie also tells him that everyone is making fun of how quickly he caved to Raleigh at the Privy Council. Four for you, Katie! I hope we have more of her in the final episodes and that she gets to keep being funny and having a personality. Not that this show is afraid of women with personalities.

    George returns to court after agreeing to marry Katie, and he goes to see if James has forgiven him yet. He encourages James to think for himself. George’s later conversation with Bacon suggests that this was a manipulation tactic, but it does really seem like George is genuinely telling James to finally lean on his own counsel and not do what everyone else demands of him. James wants peace with Spain, so what does he do? Well, Raleigh is getting executed. This makes The People really mad, but the Spanish happy, so here we are. Raleigh tells a nervous executioner to strike, which apparently is real. There’s an apocryphal story that his wife, Elizabeth Throckmorton, carried his embalmed head around with her for the rest of her life, but it’s like 99.5 percent not true. Still a fun story!

    Bacon tells George that Mary and Sandie murdered a man, and George is then very rude to both of them. After he leaves, Mary says that if George doesn’t bend, it means war. Exciting! Does Mary have any actual power over George anymore? How can they go to war when he has the backing of the king? I guess she has schemes and plots on her side and he only has sulking and dumb decisions, but still! Very excited for our final few episodes.

    Nicholas Galitzine had a tough time filming Mary & George.

    In the upcoming Starz limited series, Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore) encourages her son, George (Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and become his “all-powerful lover.”

    Galitzine ended up breaking his ankle in the dance and fighting scenes on the first day of the shoot.

    “There were these heeled shoes that you see characters wearing a lot,” he explained. “These stately homes have very slippery floors. While filming the scene in the first episode where I run and tackle this serving boy, my ankle slipped [and twisted] a full 90 degrees inward. I fractured my ankle and had to continue doing stunts the next couple days and then was dancing on it.”

    Despite the injury, he pushed through because filming had just begun. He wore riding boots so the splint on his ankle was covered.

    “I was basically on set every single day of this six month shoot,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Learning the dancing I had to do with a broken ankle. I was literally filming a dance sequence, like, three days after I broke my ankle, which is really difficult considering I’m actually not a dancer by trade either.”

    The same day he broke his ankle, another injury occurred. “One of my costars, in trying to hold me down, slammed my head into a table. So, I had a black eye and a broken ankle,” he said. “Tony [Curran] head-butted me at one point. He also cut my chin open with one of his rings. I really went through the wars on this production.”

    The young star isn’t bitter about it all.

    “I’m so pleased with the final result,” he said. “None of it, obviously, was purposeful, and it mirrored the epic-ness of the journey that I went through over the show, both as Nick and as George.”

    We wish Heels the best of luck in its future endeavors. But in an actual sincere way, not the WWE way. The show has gone on for two seasons, and it tells the story of two brothers, by the names Jack and Ace Spade. The two are rivals, and with the former being a heel and the latter being a face. While their feud plays out in kayfabe, there’s also an actual battle playing out on a personal level. Both of them want to go on to own their father’s wrestling promotion and become national acts.

    Mike O’Malley, Heels’ showrunner, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about a potential future for the show. While it may be done at Starz, it could live on at another home.

    O’Malley siad he was on a picket line for the just-concluded writers strike when he got a call from Starz saying they were canceling the show.

    When asked if he was seeking a new home for the show, he responded in the affirmative.

    Yeah, we are actively doing it right now. And some of the actors are still under contract. Obviously, the strike just ended. I couldn’t have any conversations about this and granted, they just told me on Friday. But not only are we trying to, I really believe the Starz executives when they say they want to see a future for the show too, because they did invest a lot in the show… I really do think it’s going to have a life someplace else.

    O’Malley also claimed they did not and do not intend for the recent Season 2 finale to be “the last episode of the show.

    We’ll see. Heels is currently streaming on Starz.

    Those who didn’t get a chance to see John Wick: Chapter 4 in theaters have been eagerly waiting, and now it’s finally hitting streaming. According to critics, the latest John Wick was yet another movie triumph, delivering everything you’d expect out of a John Wick movie and more.

    ScreenCrush critic Matt Singer had this to say about John Wick: Chapter 4 in his review (he also named it one of the best films of the first half of 2023):

    I am certain people will complain that the movie is absurd, that it’s got too much stuff, that it doesn’t need half this many action scenes. To which I would reply: Go see another movie that is not John Wick. These movies take their craft as seriously as John Wick takes his. One series of shots in Chapter 4 I will not spoil made me happier than any sequence I have seen in a movie theater in months and months. (It involves John Wick and a stairwell, but that is all I will say.) I go to the movies for a living chasing the high; the kind of cinematic ecstasy only a unique moment can give you. For a couple seconds, John Wick achieved that euphoric state of action nirvana. John Wick may be looking for a way into heaven. Action fans don’t need to look any further for that than this movie.

    In the first season of The Afterparty, she even helped creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller prank eagle-eyed viewers with an off-screen misdirect. “We did do one sneaky thing to the Reddit gang,” Miller told VF last year. “We released a photo of Zoë wearing a blond wig and then deleted it immediately, even though it never happens in the show.” 

    Chao laughs now, remembering the red herring. “[Miller] was like, ‘Hey, can we just take you real quick? We’re setting up, could you just wear a wig really quick and just do something in the mirror?’ And I was like, yeah. And then, truly the show came out, and in interviews, they’re like, ‘Did you know about the clues?’” She…didn’t.

    Chao does love a good mystery—though much like Tiffany Haddish’s Detective Danner on The Afterparty, she’s one who couldn’t decode her way out of an escape room. “There are clues on top of the clues” as to who the murderer is in season one, she says. “I also read those scripts. And by the time we shot the reveal, I had forgotten, and was so bummed out.” She reads a lot of mystery novels, she says. “You would think that would translate into some sort of skill, but I am the worst at figuring it out. I’m always like, Whoa, did not see that coming.” 

    True to form, she offers a wide-eyed shrug when asked who the culprit will be in season two (it’s set to premiere in July), as well as whether there’ll be more Party Down in the future: “I would tell you if I knew, but I am the last person to know.” She and her castmates did spend time at the premiere pitching more episodes. “[We] all made it very clear to everyone at Starz, and anyone who had any money. Random people, YouTubers, we were like, ‘We are all willing to come back! We’re willing and able!’” 

    That group could also include Lizzy Caplan, a main cast member in the show’s original run. Caplan’s scheduling conflicts kept her from appearing in the new season of Party Down—until a tantalizing mid-credits cameo in the finale, where her caterer-made-good character, Casey, now a bona fide star, runs into Scott’s Henry at a junket and teases that she’ll be back soon. “She’s really gung ho about a season four,” Chao says.

    Even if it takes another decade-plus to happen, Chao says she could see Lucy still working that pink bow tie. Throughout the season she shrooms, flirts with an admitted Nazi, offers existential takes on cake pops, and, we learn in the finale, skims enough from the Party Down supplies to scrape together $2,000 worth of saffron threads to audition for an haute cuisine restaurant. Ron, of course, unwittingly pops the bite she’s made into his mouth—literally devouring her chance at escape with one chomp. 

    “I think that finding a home for Lucy has been very hard,” Chao says. “So it feels like in some ways, maybe Party Down is the only place that will have her.” 

    Chao, too, says she’s found belonging with Party Down. She has three group texts popping off constantly: one for the Party Down cast, and one for each season of The Afterparty. “I’ve really inherited three families in a very short period of time, and they’re all dysfunctional, but my heart is overwhelmed,” she says.

    The actor has come a long way since her Bar Marmont days, when she says she “totally related to the desperateness of the whole show and the yearning to be doing something else other than what you’re doing.” Even now that season three is out in the world, she still can’t believe she got to crash the party.

    “I’m a very long way from Bar Marmont. Although, while shooting it, I’m like, ‘Am I back?’”

    ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ Is A Period Piece Full Of Complicated Costumes That Play A Key Role In The Storytelling

    The series may feature elaborate costumes and wigs but it’s really about moral dilemmas, say its creatives and stars.

    The new show is a prelude to the 18th century novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” that focuses on an epic romance that oscillates between love and war.

    While a feature film starring Glenn Close in 1988, and then modernized by Sara Michelle Gellar in 1999, this new narrative focuses on how a young girl named Camille as she navigates her path in a world of men, using the power of secrets to take back control and right the wrongs of her past.

    Camille is a woman, who, to quote the novel, “was born to avenge my sex and to dominate yours.” She finds her Casanova in Pascale Valmont as the Parisian lovers rise from the slums to the heights of French aristocracy, using seduction, deception and manipulation along the way.

    The series stars Alice Englert as Camille, Nicolas Denton as Valmont, with Colin Callender as executive producer and Helen Warner as executive producer/showrunner.

    Speaking about adapting the source material, Warner says, “To bring it to TV, a completely different medium, we can tell stories in different ways. The DNA of the novel you’ll find in this show, but, also you’ll find a world that will sustain itself. This is very much of the world of Dangerous Liaisons but it’s a prelude to the novel.”

    She says that her desire is to take the characters, ‘to the edge.’

    Callender jumps in to add, “What was glorious about working with Harriet was that she created a whole backstory for all the characters that was very detailed. So, by the time you meet these characters, you have a sense that there’s a history to them, that in some cases haunts them, and in other cases drives them to do difficult and complicated and messy things.”

    Those period costumes are a bit of a challenge, says Englert, especially the wigs. “They’re big. They’re really big, and they’re incredibly heavy. Sometimes, it’s like there’s a football on your head, covered in hair and jewels.”

    Denton says that the garments played a uniquely unexpected role in the storytelling, explaining, “For me, because I interact with a lot of people in a sexual way throughout the piece, it was actually the process of undressing and dressing and undressing and dressing.”

    He says that, it was inhibiting at times — “getting off three to four layers, and then getting them back on, and then being in the nude.”

    Given this, Denton felt it was important to give credit to the on-set intimacy coordinator who he says facilitated, “working with costumes of such a time whilst making it sexy, whilst making it safe, and also just making it incredibly beautiful to be a part of.”

    Englert adds that the wardrobe served as a metaphor for the role of women at that time, explaining, “The costumes were, for women, a kind of bondage and that was really interesting to experience — what that feels like, how it’s genuinely just so much harder to do anything that could help you literally escape or feel comfortable in the world.”

    This adaptation is also unique in that it ‘blows apart constraints and conforming to sort of gender stereotypes,’ says Warner, proclaiming, “I think it’s a really bold reimagining of the world of Dangerous Liaisons, [with] a fluidity to our world and characters.”

    Summing up the series, Callender says, “We wanted it to feel fresh and of the moment. The combination of Harriet’s writing, which is extremely witty and smart, and alludes to period without actually being period, and in the casting [in which] we went for actors who were very much of the moment now, who felt fresh. So, that this wasn’t going to be some staid costume drama.”

    ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ airs Sunday nights on STARZ, and is available for streaming on the STARZ app.
