We’ve officially reached the time of year when every person and their mother is on holidays in Europe. Our feeds are positively heaving with sunny days, Aperol Spritz by the beach, and leisurely sojourns into the Italian countryside. For those of us who aren’t jetting off this summer, we’ve been easing our jealousy by looking to the street style and dreaming up our mood boards closer to home. (Also, reminding ourselves that dragging a wheeled suitcase across cobblestones is kind of punishing, actually.) One fashion trend that has emerged early to stake its claim on our Pinterest boards is a refreshingly timeless and classic style: drop waist dresses.
Whenever I wear gingham I experience a mild panic before I leave my home, worried that I look too much like a picnic blanket. The two-toned checkered pattern makes me think of grassy lunches and yellow brick roads and the fabric shops my grandma used to take me to as a child. But it’s this nostalgia, paired with its general versatility, that makes gingham such a timeless print. While I only own a handful of gingham pieces — a red Ganni maxi dress, a second-hand overshirt and headscarf, and an overnight Baggu tote — this is a spring trend that I’m definitely co-signing.
Getting dressed every day — for work, in particular — can be a chore. Fashion decision fatigue can make it feel like you have nothing to wear, when really your style inspiration has just run dry, especially when we’ve transitioned from one season to the next and your closet hasn’t caught up to the changes in weather. But the solution doesn’t have to be stuffing shopping bags (or virtual carts) full of new clothes (though adding a few thoughtfully selected items might not hurt); instead, you just have to try to style your existing wardrobe in fun and creative ways.
Of course, we wouldn’t be as fixated on upgrading our existing crossbody inventory if it wasn’t for the spring/summer 2024 fashion shows and their enthusiastic embrace of the silhouette: Some of this season’s highlights included quilted, tan, and chain-strap handbags by the likes of Miu Miu, Givenchy, and Loewe. Recent street style looks featured countless variations of the ever-practical piece — an obvious but no less excellent choice for a day of dashing from one fabulous fashion fête to the next.
A belt can transform any outfit into a polished look, and this spring, belted blazers will have us all lookin’ like we have our shit together (even if we don’t). Thanks to the corp-core trend, which merges the formal workwear of pre-pandemic days with more casual, laid-back vibes, blazers are just as perfect for weekend brunches as they are for office days. Opt between an oversized blazer with a built-in belt, a more fitted style that can be worn as a top rather than a jacket, or adding a belt to a blazer you already own (the latter being a tip straight from last month’s runways).
Purple was once the colorway with the most meager stock selection at any given retailer. But this season’s runways have swiftly changed that. Shades of red, green, and purple were most prominent in the spring collections, but we’re seeing a street-style pick-up in lavender and lilac statement pieces as we approach the warmer months. Spotted at Coach in the form of crochet, Kate Spade New York in head-to-toe sequins, and 3.1 Phillip Lim via chiffon slips, this trending hue is easy on the eyes and can be associated with the quintessential freshness that comes with spring. Whether you play to that theme with florals or invest in a bag to provide a color pop is entirely up to you.
As far as influential designer brands go, Prada and its sister brand Miu Miu take the cake season after season. Over the past several years, multiple trends that went mainstream were first spotted on Prada and Miu Miu runways, and S/S 24’s trends are no exception. Many of the trends we’re all wearing this winter were undoubtedly birthed by one or both of these brands (crewneck cardigans, pencil skirts, and pointed-toe flats, to name a few).

Feel free to disagree with me, but I find the best thing about spring fashion is the shoes.
