Lake Lure is a fantastic place to spend a week during the summertime. This is a great vacation spot if you want a more relaxing experience while keeping the kids entertained. Lake Lure is a large man-made lake, and even in the hottest months of the summer, the water stays at refreshing temperatures.

To really get a great full-week experience, rent a house for the week. Renting a house allows you to experience true lake-living, and will also help you save money by being able to cook your meals and not have to eat out three times a day. You and your family can swim, canoe, kayak, paddle boat, or rent a pontoon boat to spend the day on the lake, literally.

St. Augustine, FL

Talk about an education, but fun, family vacation! St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States. Not only is this city filled with history, but the beach is right there as well! At Marineland Dolphin Adventure, you and your family can view dolphin habitats, check out sea turtles and sand tiger sharks, and even swim with the dolphins.

St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park is filled with alligators and a bird exhibit. Potter’s Wax Museum includes characters from Star Wars, famous historic figures, and pop icons. You kids will love the St. Augustine Pirate Museum as well. Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest stone fortress in the continental United States, is both fun to explore and educational, not to mention the awesome views from the top.

This may be pushing the limits, as Disney is something usually well planned out, as it is nothing short of expensive. Eight hours is a long time in the car with children, but leaving early in the morning will get you there well before dinner time. With the cost of Disney park tickets rising annually, making the trip by car is one way to save some extra dough.

If you haven’t taken your children to Disney World, but have been thinking about it, don’t think any longer. It is well worth it. Everything about it truly is ‘magical,’ as they say, and it won’t be an experience your children, or you, forget any time soon. Disney resorts may push the budget, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience Disney without breaking the bank. Lake Buena Vista, FL (which is the city on Disney World’s self-addressed envelope) has a huge variety of different hotels at a very affordable rate.

Most of the hotels surrounding Disney World cater specifically to tourists visiting Orlando to go to Disney. Many offer free shuttle services to and from the park, saving you from paying high parking prices. Plus, you don’t need to stay on Disney property to experience some of the benefits the resorts offer. You are also welcome to dine at any of the resorts (advanced reservations highly recommended).

If you are determined to stay at a Disney resort, they offer ‘Value’ resorts, which are priced similar to hotels that aren’t on Disney property. The Value resorts do not look budget at all! Orlando Resort Rentals at University Boulevard is highly rated and is near both Disney World and Universal Studios. You will also find affordable rates at Magic Village Views Trademark Collection, which is even close to fun activities outside of Disney like the Blizzard Beach Water Park.

Travelers brace for busy Easter holiday weekend

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Rerouting a flight was not part of Chrishana Wilson’s initial itinerary.

“It was pretty bad. We got here around 7:00, and then we had to stand in line for two hours, and now we’re not going to get to our destination until almost midnight, and we should’ve gotten there around noon,” said Wilson.

The travel snafu has meant missing one event this evening and has Wilson second-guessing traveling during spring break in the future.

According to FlightAware, there were 44 total delays at RDU Friday (as of 4:30 PM), split between 23 departures and 21 arrivals, though no cancellations. While passenger counts picked up in mid-afternoon, check-in and baggage claim lines at Terminal 2 remained fairly short, with TSA moving swiftly.

“I’d love to be going to Cancun, Mexico but we’re going to Phoenix, Arizona instead. And it’s not crazy at the airport actually. Surprisingly we thought these lines would be insane, but they’re actually very tolerable, and all the people are super helpful. Most helpful, wonderful people in North Carolina. This airport is amazing,” said Todd Cohen.

Travelers visiting the Triangle shared their holiday weekend plans.

“We are looking forward to Sunday going to church for that Resurrection Sunday. Saturday, we’ll go on and have some fun and then have a family dinner together,” said Theo Nartey, who traveled from Ghana to Maryland to meet with his daughter, before heading down with her today to see more family.

“We can spend time together and create memories,” added his daughter Kejiah.

Keshia Halls and her son Jedidiah are traveling from New York for a family birthday and Easter celebrations.

“It’s important to spend time with your loved ones while they’re here. So we’re just celebrating life, celebrating our family, getting together, playing games, enjoying catching up, because we don’t always get to do that, especially being in New York with the hustle and bustle, you know, coming down here to a more family-oriented place, it’s good to just talk about and catch up with our family,” said Keshia.

“I want to play with my cousins, and eat birthday cake with Papa,” said Jedidiah.

At the airport, on-site parking remains largely available. While Economy 3 is full, there is limited space at RDU Premier and RDU Central, with plenty of spots at RDU Express and Economy 4. Travelers can book parking online 24 hours in advance.

There will also be a terminal change coming out of the holiday weekend, with Breeze Airways utilizing Terminal 1 beginning Tuesday, April 2.

For those hitting the roads, AAA reports gas prices are up about 10 cents from a month ago, though fairly flat compared to a year ago. Drivers can typically get cheaper rates in the Sandhills region while paying more as they travel northward.

“You can expect traffic. I would say give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. We know that people are going to be traveling to our area beaches, are going to be going to the mountains. When we’re talking about domestically within the United States, the top destination always is Orlando. People want to go see Mickey,” said Tiffany Wright, Director of Public Affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group.

While AAA does not release a travel forecast for the Easter holiday, Wright said based on patterns during the spring break stretch, they are anticipating a busy Memorial Day weekend.

“Travel has just bounced back in such a big way, not even just domestically, but international travel. We look at the bookings. People aren’t just traveling in the United States. They’re going abroad. Cruises have bounced back in a big way. People are looking to travel and they want to do so with grandma and grandpa,” Wright shared. “We’re seeing a lot of multigenerational travel. People want to do so with the entire family, and cruising is one way that you can do that. There’s something for everyone.”

WTOP talked to a travel expert on how staying in the D.C. region can help you avoid the masses and limit your spending.

“What a lot of spring breakers are doing this year, they’re avoiding the usual suspect destinations of Florida, and even Myrtle Beach for that matter,” said Peter Greenberg, travel editor for CBS News.

Greenberg said staying within a gas tank of the D.C. area could lead to less headaches this spring break travel season.

“They’re getting better deals, fewer crowds and probably a better experience,” he said. “Local travel, it becomes beneficial because with everybody else going out of town, if you go within 150 to 200 miles radius of D.C., you’re going to find better deals because those people have also left town.”

Where can you go in the D.C. area?

Within two to three hours is Ocean City for a beach day or Saint Michaels for a day of sailing on the Bay in Maryland.

There’s Cape Henlopen in Delaware for camping on the beach. And with locations in Maryland and Virginia, Assateague Island also offers camping and a look at the wild horses that live there.

Away from the beach, spring breakers could head to Front Royal, Virginia, with access to Shenandoah Valley.

There’s also Deep Creek Lake in Maryland with rope courses and other adventure activities at Wisp Resort.

“You may not be on the beach, but then again, you’re not fighting for a beach chair,” Greenberg said.

Cabo is the who’s who of Spring Break so much so that you’ll likely be gravitating toward returning sometime in your early 30’s.

For the best concerts, beach clubs, spending more money than you probably have, and hanging out with tens of thousands of students your age; Cabo is absolutely the place to be.

Puerto Vallarta

PV used to have this rep as a place for old people. Maybe that’s just me because it’s where my parents went for their honeymoon in like 1995. Or maybe my parents just party. I don’t know. Either way, SBPV is back.

The lineups are set for a week-long concert extravaganza, the legendary scenic backdrop of mountainside estates, and sexy party-ready travelers on gorgeous beaches make this a can’t-miss spring break encore.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a great Spring Break destination for two reasons (there are a lot more than two but play along with me here for a second):
- You don’t need a passport to get there as it’s part of the US.
- Puerto Ricans can freakin’ party. Trust me, I am from Chicago after all.
That’s it. That’s the tweet. While Puerto Rico may not shine as bright to the naked eye as its other SB counterparts, there’s absolute treasure to be found there. The food is insane. The resorts and beaches are stunning. The nightlife is buzzing. There aren’t many downsides to Puerto Rico and we’re just waiting for the rest of the world to see it.

Miami

I used to listen to Miami by Will Smith upon landing every time I flew to Miami back in the day. That “Bienvenidos a Miami!” slaps a little different these days, huh? Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Bad Will Smith slapping jokes aside, there is nowhere in this here United States of America better for college Spring Break than Miami. Miami itself is basically spring break year-round and thus the hottest domestic destination for some of the best food, nightlife, and beaches around. It’s also home to some of the most beautiful human beings on planet Earth so go and spread your wings in the 305 if you need respite from customs headaches and all that.

Miami Beach enacts spring break curfew after 2 fatal shootings

Miami Beach officials declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew beginning Sunday night during spring break after two fatal shootings and rowdy, chaotic crowds that police have had difficulty controlling.

The city said in a news release the curfew would be from 11:59 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday, with an additional curfew likely to be put in place Thursday through next Monday, March 27. The curfew mainly affects South Beach, the most popular party location for spring breakers.

The release said the two separate shootings Friday night and early Sunday that left two people dead and “excessively large and unruly crowds” led to the decision. The city commission plans a meeting Monday to discuss potential further restrictions next week.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said in a video message posted Sunday that the crowds and presence of numerous firearms has “created a peril that cannot go unchecked” despite massive police presence and many city-sponsored activities meant to keep people busy.

“We don’t ask for spring break in our city. We don’t want spring break in our city. It’s too rowdy, it’s too much disorder and it’s too difficult to police,” Gelber said.

Gelber added that city officials would meet on Monday to discuss the possible curfew for next weekend, noting that the “manager’s emergency powers are limited to only 72 hours.”

The latest shooting, which police said was caught on surveillance video, appened about 3:30 a.m. Sunday on Ocean Drive in South Beach, according to Miami Beach police.

Police said the suspect, “without any provocation,” shot the victim multiple times. The victim died after being rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. A second person was hurt, but treated at the scene and released, police said on Twitter.

The suspect, identified as Dontavious Polk, fled on foot and dropped a gun while being chased by a police officer, according to the arrest report. Police recovered that gun, which they claim had been stolen, and arrested the suspect after officers tackled him a few blocks away, the report said.

Police said on Twitter they also recovered a second firearm from the victim.

After he was arrested, the suspect was taken to Ryder Trauma Center for what police described as a “pre-existing gunshot wound.” He was later discharged and taken to Turner Gilford Knight Correctional Center, police records showed.

Polk is facing a first degree murder charge, according to police records, although no charges had been officially filed as of Sunday night.

“MBPD has confirmed that this was a targeted and isolated incident,” police tweeted. “The identities of all parties cannot be released while the investigation is ongoing.”

In the Friday night shooting, one male victim was killed and another seriously injured, sending crowds scrambling in fear from restaurants and clubs into the streets as gunshots rang out. Police detained one person at the scene and found four firearms, but no other details have been made available.

Under the curfew, people must leave businesses before midnight, although hotels can operate later only in service to their guests. The city release said restaurants can stay open only for delivery and the curfew won’t apply to residents, people going to and from work, emergency services and hotel guests. Some roads will be closed off and arriving hotel guests may have to show proof of their reservations.

Last year, the city imposed a midnight curfew following two shootings, also on Ocean Drive. The year before that, there were about 1,000 arrests and dozens of guns confiscated during a rowdy spring break that led Miami Beach officials to take steps aimed at calming the situation.

Time is ticking to score deals on spring break flights and hotel reservations, with prices on the rise due to strong demand for getaways.

With air fares up about 25% this year compared to 2022, here are ways for savvy travelers to save on booking a trip.

Tip one: Be flexible with your travel dates, to the extent that you can.

Weekend flights tend to be more popular and more expensive compared to weekday flights.

“When you travel is one of the key ways to get a deal. Take traveling in the middle of the week. If you can fly for a week-long vacation Tuesday to Tuesday, or Wednesday to Wednesday, you can save about $100 per ticket on a domestic flight,” said Hayley Berg, economist for travel app Hopper. Traveling off peak can save consumers about $150 each way on an international trip, she added.

Of course, some families are locked in to school vacation schedules. But workers without kids who have the option of working remotely likely have more leeway when choosing travel dates.

Tip two: Look for deals in these destinations

Warm-weather destinations are also most popular this time of year, according to Berg. Trips to Central America and destinations in the Caribbean can be pricey, but there are currently deals a plenty to destinations including Phoenix, Arizona; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Orlando, Florida, according to Berg.

Puerto Rico is also popular among Americans looking to escape cold temperatures, and consumers can secure roundtrip tickets for $300 to $400 this time of year.

Tip three: Don’t wait any longer to book travel flights and make hotel reservations

“It is late. If you haven’t booked flights for spring break you should really be looking right now, I would suggest by the end of the weekend,” Berg said.

Tip four: Shop around

Sometimes, online travel agencies offer lower rates, so it can pay to shop around before locking in a flight or hotel.

“Do you homework, know where you want to go, if you can be flexible on travel dates, do that,” Berg said. “Prices are really only going to increase from now on.”
