  • Jordan Stolz wins second speedskating gold of Olympics

    [ad_1]

MILAN — For a while now, Jordan Stolz’s talent and dominance as a speedskater, and his much-anticipated potential for Olympic success, prompted many to repeatedly mention his name — prematurely, no doubt — alongside that of Eric Heiden. Now they really do belong in the same sentence, at least in one regard.

    What You Need To Know

    • Jordan Stolz has won his second speedskating gold medal of the Milan Cortina Olympics by finishing first in the 500 meters in an Olympic-record time. Saturday’s race was the American’s second of the Winter Games
    • The 21-year-old from Wisconsin was coming off a victory in Wednesday’s 1,000, the first of his four individual events in Milan
    • He came to these Games as someone considered a contender for gold in all four
    • The men’s record for most speedskating titles at one Olympics is the five for Eric Heiden at Lake Placid in 1980

Stolz established himself as a two-time Olympic gold medalist, halfway to his goal of four at the Milan Cortina Games, by winning the 500 meters on Saturday to follow up his victory in the 1,000. Those twin triumphs allowed Stolz, a 21-year-old from Wisconsin, to join Heiden as the only men to complete the 500-1,000 double in speedskating at one Olympics.

Heiden, of course, did it as part of his record sweep of all five individual events at the 1980 Lake Placid Games for the U.S., taking everything from the 500 to the 10,000, and all in Olympic-record time.

Stolz finished the 500 in an Olympic-record time of 33.77 seconds, after also setting a Games mark in his win in the 1,000 on Wednesday. Both times, the silver went to Jenning do Boo of the Netherlands, who clocked 33.88 in the shortest speedskating event. Both times, they raced head-to-head in the same heat.

Stolz was leading Wednesday as they came out of the final curve, then they were even entering the last stretch. But Stolz, who overcame a deficit in the 1,000, turned on the speed and leaned across the line first again in the 500. De Boo slipped and fell into the wall afterward, while Stolz skated past and shook his right fist overhead.

Canada’s Laurent Dubreuil got the bronze in 34.26.

The last American to win Olympic gold in the men’s 500 was Casey FitzRandolph in 2002.

The soft-spoken Stolz acknowledges that, yes, his aims are high, and, sure, he is flattered by the comparisons to Heiden. But Stolz, who isn’t entered in the 5,000 or 10,000 in Milan, also knows he isn’t trying to recreate the same sort of unprecedented and all-encompassing performance turned in by Heiden.

Still, Stolz does have a real shot at the four medals, maybe even four golds, he is seeking at his second Winter Games.

At Beijing in 2022, just 17 years old, Stolz finished 13th in the 1,000 and 14th in the 500. In the time since, though, he has established himself as the best in the world at his sport, including two world titles each at the 500, the 1,000 and the 1,500. And right now, Stolz is so far living up to the outsized expectations and accompanying pressure that follow his every stride on the ice at the Milano Speed Skating Stadium, a temporary facility created for this event.

Two races, two golds, two Olympic records.

Now there are two more to go for the six-time world champion: the 1,500 meters on Thursday, and the mass start on Feb. 21.

The last man with three gold medals in speedskating at one Winter Games was Norway’s Johann Olav Koss, who won the 1,500, the 5,000 and the 10,000 at the 1994 Lillehammer Games

Stolz took to the ice to warm up Saturday about 2 1/2 hours before his race. He paused at one point to plop himself down for a seat on the low boards along the ice, retying his black-and-green skates and smiling while chatting with his coach, Bob Corby.

No sign of nerves. None at all.

  • No. 14 Florida beats 25th-ranked Kentucky 92-83

    [ad_1]

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Xaivian Lee scored 22 points, Urban Klavzar added 19 and No. 14 Florida beat 25th-ranked Kentucky 92-83 Saturday for its 10th victory in its last 11 outings.

Lee and Klavzar took advantage of Florida’s paint presence and hit a combined nine 3-pointers.

Thomas Haugh (17), Alex Condon (14) and Rueben Chinyelu (10) also scored in double figures for the Gators, who ended a six-game skid against the Wildcats at home.

Florida (19-6, 10-2 Southeastern Conference) had been 1-4 against Kentucky (17-8, 8-4) under coach Todd Golden. But the Gators led wire to wire in this one and finished with a 45-37 rebounding advantage. Condon and Chinyelu grabbed 11 boards each, both finishing with a double-double.

The matchup featured a unique subplot. Kentucky guard Denzel Aberdeen, who spent the last three years at Florida and helped the Gators win the national title last March, was “welcomed” back with a chorus of boos.

Aberdeen led the Wildcats with 19 points while getting taunted with chants of “Gator traitor” throughout. Collin Chandler added 18, and Otega Oweh chipped in 13.

Florida opened up a double-digit lead early but didn’t put Kentucky away until a second-half spurt that included inside buckets from Condon and outside shots from Klavzar, who finished 5-of-11 shooting from behind the arc.

The Gators had several former players on hand for the sold-out game, including NBA rookies and Walter Clayton and Will Richard. Clayton, the MVP of last year’s Final Four, and Richard were greeted with standing ovations when they walked to their courtside seats and when they were recognized in the first half. Matt Walsh (2002-05) and Matt Bonner (1999-2003) also made the trip to Gainesville.

  • Brazil’s Pinheiro Braathen Leads GS After 1st Run, Seeking South America’s 1st Medal at Winter Games

    [ad_1]

BORMIO, Italy (AP) — Brazilian ski racer Lucas Pinheiro Braathen leads the Olympic giant slalom Saturday after the first of two runs and is in position to win South America’s first medal at a Winter Games.

The final run will be held later Saturday. The top 30 will go in reverse order based on time, meaning Pinheiro Braathen races at No. 30.

The first skier on the Stelvio course, Pinheiro Braathen took advantage of the smooth surface to finish in a time of 1 minute, 13.92 seconds. His fast run resulted in a 0.95-second lead over Swiss racer Marco Odermatt, who’s the defending Olympic champion in the event. The next-closest is Odermatt’s teammate, Loic Meillard, who’s 1.57 seconds behind.

Pinheiro Braathen is the fun-loving, samba-dancing skier who’s ready to get this party started. On the back of his helmet, he has in big letters “Vamos Dancar” — “Let’s Dance.”

Fittingly enough, it’s Carnival season, too, a festival of parades, masquerades and partying made famous in places such as Brazil.

He’s already accomplished plenty of “firsts” with his new country: First Brazilian Alpine racer to finish on a World Cup podium last year and first ever World Cup win for the country this season.

In the lead-up to the Olympics, Pinheiro Braathen chatted about the pressure of this particular “first.”

“I’d be a liar if I said it was easy, that’s for sure,” he said. “It is everything but easy. And that’s the very beauty of it. The pressure that I bring in coming into these Games is something that I try to embrace with gratitude. Because if I wasn’t at the start gate dealing with pressure, I wouldn’t really be bringing change.”

In Milan, Braathen’s fans, decked out in green and yellow, crowded into “Casa Brasil” as they waited to watch his second run on a large screen. The first run was early, but final run could be the perfect time for revelers to toast to his success with a “caipirinha,” which is Brazil’s national cocktail made with cachaça, lime, sugar and ice.

  • Judge rules Vikings DC Brian Flores’ NFL discrimination lawsuit can head to open court, not arbitration

    [ad_1]

The Brian Flores-led discrimination lawsuit against the NFL can proceed to open court and avoid the league’s arbitration process, a federal judge ruled Friday.

Flores, who is joined in the lawsuit by Steve Wilks and Ray Horton, sued the league and three teams in February 2022 after he was fired the previous month by the Miami Dolphins. Now the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator, Flores alleged in his original suit that the league was “rife with racism” regarding its hiring practices when it comes to Black coaches.

The NFL argued Flores should go through the league’s arbitration process rather than the legal system, but Judge Valerie Caproni of the Southern District of New York sided with the plaintiffs.

“The court’s decision recognizes that an arbitration forum in which the defendant’s own chief executive gets to decide the case would strip employees of their rights under the law,” Flores’ attorneys Douglas H. Wigdor and David E. Gottlieb said in a statement. “It is long overdue for the NFL to recognize this and finally provide a fair, neutral and transparent forum for these issues to be addressed.”

The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A pretrial hearing has been set for April 3.

Flores was fired after going 24-25 record over three years without a playoff appearances. The Dolphins did have back-to-back winning seasons before Flores was dismissed.

He sued the NFL as well as the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Houston Texans. Flores interviewed with the Broncos in 2019 and the Giants and Texans in 2022.

Wilks, who was fired in December as the New York Jets defensive coordinator, joined the lawsuit by claiming the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 hired him as a “bridge coach” and didn’t provide him with a realistic chance to succeed.

Horton, who last coached in the NFL in 2019, alleged the Tennessee Titans didn’t offer him a genuine interview for the head coaching position in 2016.

  • Philly Special: V.J. Edgecombe Leads Team Vince to Victory at NBA All-Star Weekend’s Rising Stars

    [ad_1]

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Philadelphia rookie V.J. Edgecombe led Team Vince to victory in the Rising Stars event at NBA All-Star weekend Friday night, scoring 17 points in the semifinal before hitting two free throws to end the final.

San Antonio guard Dylan Harper ended the first semifinal in memorable fashion by scoring the game-winning bucket over Ron Harper Jr., his older brother.

Dylan Harper then scored eight points in the final for Team Melo while teaming up with his Spurs teammate, Stephon Castle, last season’s Rookie of the Year.

Castle made a putback dunk off Jeremiah Fears’ miss to pull Team Melo within one point of victory in the final, but Edgecombe drew a foul from Donovan Clingan and coolly hit both free throws to end it at 25-24. Edgecombe was named the Rising Stars MVP.

The NBA’s rookies, sophomores and G League prospects opened the All-Star weekend at the Los Angeles Clippers’ Intuit Dome with this four-team tournament of three games played to a set point total.

Dylan Harper called game in the first semifinal with a succession of moves that could have been learned on the driveway at home, bullying Ron Jr. into the paint before hitting a step-back jumper. Dylan stuck out his tongue in gleeful celebration of only his second basket in the semifinal, and their famous father laughed heartily at courtside.

Edgecombe scored nearly half of his team’s 41 points — including the last 10 in a row — while winning the second semifinal to set up a showdown between the teams led by NBA greats Vince Carter and Carmelo Anthony.

The Rising Stars game wasn’t a full showcase of the NBA’s top young talent because No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg dropped out of the game due to injury, as did Washington’s Alex Sarr and Memphis’ Cedric Coward.

Edgecombe hit three 3-pointers during his scoring barrage in the first semifinal to win his duel with Charlotte’s Kon Knueppel, who scored just four points. The two rookies are the only serious contenders with Flagg for the Rookie of the Year award.

The event got off to a rousing start when Clippers prospect Yanic Konan Niederhäuser dunked a lob from Ron Harper Jr. for the first basket of the night. The Swiss big man who was drafted last summer by the All-Star weekend hosts, got raucous cheers from the fans in The Wall, an extra-steep supporters’ section installed at Intuit Dome by Clippers owner Steve Ballmer.

Niederhäuser led his losing team with 11 points in the first semifinal.

  • Rome Flynn repeats as NBA All-Star Celebrity Game MVP and Team Giannis wins 65-58

    [ad_1]

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Rome Flynn earned MVP honors for the second straight year in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game on Friday night, scoring 17 points to lead a team coached by Giannis Antetokounmpo to a 65-58 victory.

Actor-comedian Anthony Anderson coached the losing team, led by former 7-foot-6 NBA player Tacko Fall with 20 points.

The game brought basketball back to the Forum, home of the Los Angeles Lakers’ “Showtime” era until 1999, when they moved 10 miles away to downtown Los Angeles. Now, it has a different sponsor name under Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and is mostly used as a concert and entertainment venue.

K-pop made its debut at the game with boy group CORTIS performing at halftime.

Victor Wembanyama tossed up the opening tip between Team Giannis’ Jenna Bandy and Team Anthony’s Adrien Nunez, who got control, was fouled and missed his first throw.

Bandy was the only woman in either team’s starting lineup.

Team Giannis had a huge advantage in the paint with Fall grabbing most of the rebounds. His dunk made it a one-point game in the third.

Chinese actor-singer Dylan Wang garnered the loudest screams of the night, especially after he scored back-to-back baskets in the first quarter for Team Giannis.

Two of the oldest guys on the court were Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia (age 46) and Rick Schnall (50-something), who’s part of the Charlotte Hornets ownership group. Schnall fouled Ishbia in the first quarter, and Ishbia hit the free throws in a throwback to his Michigan State playing days.

Los Angeles Chargers star Keenan Allen hit a long shot from the red, white and blue line that was worth 4 points for Team Anthony. It launched a flurry of points for the wide receiver in the second quarter and he finished with 18 points.

Mascots from the Hornets and Mavericks alternated as sixth men restricted to playing in the backcourt for a bit in the third quarter.

Sidelined since Jan. 23 with a calf strain, Antetokounmpo won’t be playing in the All-Star Game on Sunday.

But the two-time MVP was assisted by his brothers Thanasis and Alex on Friday. Another assistant was Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts.

Former NBA player Jeremy Lin credited Betts for an inspiring halftime speech. “He definitely knows a lot about basketball,” Lin said.

The game marked the start of All-Star weekend, followed by the Rising Stars game down the street at Intuit Dome.

  • Mike Tyson sounds the alarm on US boxing, launching a Las Vegas amateur invitational

    [ad_1]

LAS VEGAS — When Mike Tyson was developing as a young fighter in New York in 1980s, he had plenty of chances to test the skills that would one day make him the world’s best and fiercest heavyweight.

Now Tyson looks at the state of boxing in the United States and doesn’t like what he sees. The title of heavyweight champion has gone from among the most prestigious in sports to one that’s nearly anonymous.

That’s what drove the 59-year-old Hall-of-Famer to help launch the Mike Tyson Invitational on March 12–14 in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas. Tyson’s team sought out the nation’s top amateur boxers to give them this forum to go against each other with the long-range goal of elevating boxing to where it used to stand as a conversation-driving sport.

“I was watching some of the amateur fights and I was wondering, ‘We don’t have enough boxing clubs,’” Tyson said Friday. “Before, when I was fighting, we could fight at the Ohio state fair. Then I’d go to Colorado the next two weeks and fight in the national tournament. That’s what we need to be able to compete with the other countries. We need more competition.”

He is particularly concerned about boxing’s future in the Olympics. Until the International Olympic Committee announced last March that boxing would be included in the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, there was doubt whether the sport’s longtime presence in the quadrennial event would end.

Tyson’s main focus is making boxing big again in the U.S. There is the occasional major event, such as the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford unified super middleweight title fight Sept. 13 before 70,482 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

But those attention-grabbing bouts only temporarily push back on the notion that boxing is in trouble at the grassroots level.

“Listen, boxing is dying, and that is what’s driving me,” Tyson said. “If I can be involved in any way in the uplifting and development of boxing, I’ll be happy with that.”

That would include working with UFC CEO and President Dana White, who grew up loving boxing before building his mixed-martial arts empire. Through TKO, the company at that owns the UFC and WWE, White is in a multiyear agreement with the Saudi General Entertainment Authority, and Sela, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

The Alvarez-Crawford card was their first under this partnership. Tyson was among a number of former boxing greats and celebrities in attendance.

While the UFC is a one-man show, boxing is much more splintered with different sponsoring organizations and promoters competing against each other.

“I kind of like that organization,” Tyson said of the UFC. “It’s just one guy and we deal with everything. That might not work for boxing, but I like the idea. In the UFC, if they have one bad fight, the guy might not be in the fold. It’s for entertainment. That’s what it’s about. In (boxing), if the guy stinks up the joint, they keep using him. So that has to be the criteria. Either you make exciting fights or you’re not able to participate.”

There was no lack of excitement when Tyson was putting together his career that resulted in a 50-7 record with 44 knockouts. The self-proclaimed “baddest man on the planet” came as advertised, winning his first 19 professional bouts by knockout, 12 in the first round.

His fights became a must-watch event, and Tyson was all business entering the ring, once declaring, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched.”

“We’re all entertainers, trust me, especially fighters,” Tyson said. “If you don’t perform well, people give their opinion about you. You may not like it. My job was always to make the people happy as a fighter.”

Now he’s searching for the next Mike Tyson — or, rather, Mike Tysons — who can bring spark to the sport.

His invitational won’t be a cure-all, but it could be a start.

“I was taught as a kid, boxing is about putting asses in seats,” Tyson said. “That’s where greatness comes from.”

  • What to Know About the Counter Drone Technology That Triggered the Closure of the El Paso Airspace

    [ad_1]

The government’s ability to deal with drones that pose a threat on American soil has been questioned this week after the use of a laser designed to shoot down drones near the border in Texas led to the abrupt closure of the airspace over El Paso, sources familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

The details of exactly what happened before the Federal Aviation Administration shut down the busy airport in the Mexican border city on Wednesday aren’t entirely clear, but a source familiar with the situation told AP that the laser was deployed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection without coordinating with the FAA.

Two months ago, Congress agreed to give more law enforcement agencies the authority to take down rogue drones as long as they are properly trained. That could make situations like the one in El Paso more likely. Previously, only a select few federal agencies had that power.

Here’s a look at what happened and the issues that raised:

    Communication issues acknowledged

The government would say only that the airspace was shut down when an incursion by Mexican drug cartel drones was neutralized.

But the two people who discussed sensitive details on condition of anonymity said the FAA grounded every aircraft in the El Paso area over concerns about the safety of the laser system being used near commercial planes. The restrictions were initially expected to last 10 days, but then they were lifted a few hours later.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Friday that the government agencies involved in El Paso are working to address the concerns that led to the cancellation of more than a dozen flights and sent travelers scrambling.

“This was a joint agency task force mission that was undertaken and we’re continuing to work on the communication through that,” Noem said in Arizona.

But drone warfare expert Brett Velicovich said the dysfunction in Texas raises questions about whether the U.S. will be prepared to deal with a significant drone threat.

“We need to simplify the authorities for who is really in charge and get these egos out of the way from these different agencies before an American gets hurt,” said Velicovich, who founded drone maker Power.us and consults on ways to mitigate their threats.

Velicovich, who used to use Predator drones in the military to bomb targets, said it wouldn’t be hard for someone with malicious intent to buy a drone for a few hundred bucks and do great harm at a major public event like a World Cup match or the celebrations of America’s 250th birthday that are planned this summer.

Cartels routinely use drones to deliver drugs across the Mexican border and surveil Border Patrol officers. Officials told Congress last summer that more than 27,000 drones were detected within 1,600 feet (500 meters) of the southern border in the last six months of 2024.

The government recently handed out $250 million in grants to the 11 states that are set to host World Cup matches this summer to help them prepare for the threat of drones. Another $250 million in grants will be awarded later this year to strengthen the nation’s drone defenses.

    More near misses involving drones

The threat to planes from drones continues to increase along with the number of near misses around airports. Homeland Security estimates there are more than 1.7 million registered drones flying in the United States, and that number has been growing.

Larger drones are required to carry a radio transponder that identifies the drone’s owner and broadcasts its position to help avert collisions. Cities can also invest in additional sensors around stadiums to help quickly detect drones.

Airspace Link, a Detroit company, created a low altitude air traffic control system to track drones and can alert authorities who might soon be able to take action. Cities can buy additional sensors to upgrade that system around stadiums or other high-profile locations.

“We don’t want something to happen,” said CEO Michael Healander. “But we also want to be prepared to have the tools in place to take action, because these are such big global events.”

    Acting against rogue drones

Common anti-drone systems use radio signals to jam or force drones to land. But the government has also developed high-powered microwaves or laser beams like the one sources say was used in Texas this week that are capable of disabling the machines.

Some other systems station small drones to take flight quickly and ram into drones that are considered a threat. And there are systems that use bullets to shoot down drones.

Michael Robbins, president and CEO of the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International trade group, said these counter drone systems are more common in warzones than across the United States. But the government is working to get them into the hands of more officers nationwide.

“It’s our belief that this is important technology that when responsibly used with proper oversight and intensive training will help to mitigate unsafe or malicious drones in the very rare instances where that needs to occur,” Robbins said.

    Pilots worry about drones

Allied Pilots Association union spokesman Capt. Dennis Tajer said he’s not sure how big of a threat the counter drone technology is to the American Airlines jets he flies because so few details have been released about what happened in Texas. And officials with Homeland Security and the FAA didn’t respond to questions about it again on Friday.

Tajer said he’s more concerned about the possibility of a passenger jet running into a drone because that could bring the plane down. A year ago, 67 people were killed when an American Airlines jet collided with an Army helicopter near Washington, D.C.

“You don’t have to be a pilot, an engineer or a defense expert to understand that two pieces of metal in the sky that one doesn’t know the other is there and is uncontrolled is dangerous,” Tajer said. “We’ve got to keep those two pieces of metal away from each other.”

The Team USA women’s hockey team’s dominant run continued with a 6-0 quarterfinal victory over Italy Friday at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena to advance to the Olympic semifinals.

Entering the single-elimination game against Italy, Team USA had outscored opponents 20-1 in four games, including a 5-0 shutout of Team Canada.

The team’s phenomenal play continued against Italy. It was their fourth straight shutout, extending Team USA’s shutout streak to 271 minutes.

Team USA scored its first goal when both teams had just four players on the ice due to penalties from both teams. Alex Carpenter won a faceoff cleanly back to Megan Keller. Keller passed it to Laila Edwards, who immediately sent it back to Keller, and she buried a one-timer in the back of the net to give Team USA a 1-0 lead.

Team USA dominated the first period, outshooting Italy 20-2. Italian goaltender Gabriella Durante made a sparkling save to end the first period as she reached behind her with her stick to deflect Abbey Murphy’s shot away in the final minute of the period.

Italy did have a golden chance to get on the scoreboard in the first period when Justine Reyes had a breakaway, but the opportunity was thwarted by Team USA goalie Gwyneth Philips.

Team USA’s second goal came 1:41 into the second period on a sharp-angle shot from Kendall Coyne Schofield. She buried the rebound off the end boards from on the goal line, banking it in off Durante.

Hannah Bilka scored Team USA’s sixth goal of the game on a slick pass from Taylor Heise, and, after the goal, tempers flared. Punches were thrown from both teams after the goal, and the coaches from both benches barked at each other.

At the conclusion of the second period, the United States outshot Italy 39-4. No goals were scored in the third period, and Team USA outshout Italy 51-6 overall.

Team USA will play in the semifinals Monday at 10:40 a.m. ET.

  • Colorado’s Anaelle Dutat back on track as Buffs host BYU

    [ad_1]

Through the first couple months of the season, Anaelle Dutat was perhaps the most consistent player for the Colorado women’s basketball team.

A double-double threat nearly every game and one of the Big 12’s top rebounders, Dutat averaged 9.9 points and 8.9 rebounds in her first 18 games.

That suddenly changed about three weeks ago. During a six-game stretch, Dutat averaged only 2.8 points and 5.3 rebounds.

“Honestly, I don’t know (why),” she said. “I didn’t feel more tired or anything. I don’t know; I just felt really passive, like a step behind on everything. I was trying to find solutions at that point. I’m like, I don’t even know what to do.”

A meeting and film session with head coach JR Payne earlier this week seems to have done the trick. Dutat didn’t put up big numbers in Sunday’s 80-79 upset of No. 14 TCU, but she was exceptional on defense. She then had 12 points and 13 rebounds in Wednesday’s 73-63 win at Houston.

She and the Buffs will aim to keep the momentum going Saturday when BYU visits the CU Events Center.

“That TCU game was, like, a good start to going back to how I used to play,” the senior transfer from Rhode Island said. “I think the Houston one was just the same, following that TCU game, and I’m just trying to keep it like that.”

As CU makes a push for an invitation to the NCAA Tournament, it will need more big games from Dutat, a 6-foot forward.

“(The Houston game) was huge because she’s been someone that’s been so reliable and so trustworthy,” Payne said. “Everyone just trusts that she’s going to do her job and be where she’s supposed to be and things like that.

“But for someone that is coming down the home stretch of their college career, you want to perform and you want to contribute in a meaningful way, and we need her to because she is our best rebounder and one of our best defenders, an elite athlete that can create. So it was really great to see her be aggressive again.”

The entire team has been more aggressive in the past few weeks with the postseason looming. Since a 74-68 loss at Central Florida — which is tied for 14th in the Big 12 — on Jan. 18, the Buffs are 5-1, with the only loss coming against first-place and No. 19 West Virginia.

“I think we’re more urgent about getting to March Madness, the end of the season,” Dutat said. “We’re all working towards the same goal and because we’re seeing that it’s getting more and more tangible, I think we’re really all focusing on the same thing.”

While getting to the NCAA Tournament is the goal, Payne’s teams have always focused on the task at hand, rather than the big picture.

“When you’re able to focus on what’s directly in front of you, it allows you an opportunity to achieve your goal,” Payne said. “If you’re just worried about the goal that might happen a month from now, you probably won’t attain it because you won’t handle your business day-to-day.”

For now the task is taking on BYU, which has had mixed results in Big 12 play but has proven capable of playing with and beating some of the top teams in the conference.

“I think they’re really dangerous,” Payne said. “I think they are one of the more dangerous teams in the league, because they can be so good. They’re also just a team that I have a lot of respect for because I respect teams that are just going to work hard, play hard, do what they’re supposed to do, no complaining.”

That’s how CU has played of late, as it has moved into the top six of the Big 12 standings.

“I feel like we play more together,” Dutat said. “We have a better sense of how to play with each other, so I think it relates on the court and I think our off-court chemistry is getting better. Like, way, way better, and it’s translating to the on-court (chemistry), so it’s really fun.”

  • A Healthy Shohei Ohtani Eyes the One Major Award He Hasn’t Won — a Cy Young Award

    [ad_1]

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani is a five-time All-Star, a four-time Most Valuable Player, a two-time World Series winner and a World Baseball Classic champion, giving him a sparkling baseball resume that no current player can touch.

The only major honor he hasn’t won? A Cy Young Award.

Given his track record, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the two-way Japanese star add that trophy to his collection in 2026.

“I think it’s fair to say he expects to be in the Cy Young conversation,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday. “We just want him to be healthy, make starts, and all the numbers and statistics will take care of themselves.

“But, man, this guy is such a disciplined worker and expects the most from himself.”

Just 105 days after the Dodgers became MLB’s first back-to-back champs in a quarter century — beating the Toronto Blue Jays in a thrilling Game 7 — Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the rest of the team’s pitchers and catchers went through their first spring training workout at Camelback Ranch on Friday.

Ohtani is expecting to be a full-time, two-way player for the first time since 2023. An elbow injury kept him off the mound for the 2024 season and he returned to pitching midway though last year, going 3-0 with a 4.43 ERA in the postseason to help the Dodgers capture their second straight World Series title.

Roberts said an injury-free offseason — where he could focus on rest, recovery and strength — should make him even more formidable on the mound this season.

“He just looks strong, but not too much mass,” Roberts said. “Watching him throw, watching him run, his body is moving well. I think he’s in a sweet spot.”

The 31-year-old Ohtani munched on breakfast and laughed with teammates in the clubhouse before his bullpen session, fully comfortable in what are now familiar surroundings. He’s entering his third season with the franchise that has helped him blossom into the biggest baseball phenomenon in decades.

“I was finally able to have a normal offseason,” Ohtani said. “Although the offseason was pretty short, I thought it was a good thing.”

Ohtani said he arrived at Camelback Ranch at the beginning of the month and Friday’s bullpen — which he said went well — was his third of the spring. The goal is to throw live batting practice next week before he leaves to join Team Japan in Tokyo, where it will be playing in the World Baseball Classic.

He won’t be pitching for Japan in the WBC — focusing solely on his work at the plate.

Roberts said keeping Ohtani off the mound in the WBC was a collaborative decision that focused on his long-term health.

“As much as people think that he’s not human, he’s still a human being who has had two major surgeries,” Roberts said. “He’s got a long career ahead of him.”

The timeline and schedule of the WBC — Team Japan could be playing from March 6-17 on two different continents — makes Ohtani’s preparation for the Dodgers’ opening day game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 26 a challenge. Neither Roberts or Ohtani were sure what his throwing schedule would look like in Japan.

Roberts said he’s sure Ohtani will want to be ready to pitch at the beginning of the season, but the team would be flexible.

“It’s delicate,” Roberts said. “We’ll know more in the next couple weeks and see where the progression is at. But for us, there’s not going to be any timeline or endline or finish line where he has to be ready.”

The Dodgers enter the season as World Series favorites. They were big spenders on the free agent market once again, landing four-time All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker on a $240 million, four-year deal that further exacerbated the divide between baseball’s haves and have nots. Los Angeles also nabbed star reliever Edwin Díaz on a $69 million, three-year deal.

Díaz also threw a bullpen on Friday. He had a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves for the New York Mets last season.

“Guys are anxious,” Roberts said. “We’ve got a long camp, longer than we’ve had in recent years. We’re trying to get guys to start slow and be intentional and methodical. That’s kind of the message.”

  • Hawaii Lawmakers Advance Online Sports Betting Bill

    [ad_1]

Lawmakers in Hawaii advanced a proposal to legalize statewide online sports betting despite significant public opposition and a split committee decision. The House Committee on Economic Development & Technology passed HB 2570 in a 5-2 vote, clearing the way for the measure to move ahead in the legislative process.

Hawaii Advances Online Sports Betting Bill

Rep. Daniel Holt, who has previously advocated for legal sports betting, voted in favor of the bill. Before the vote, he remarked that he appreciated the effort to advance it, but noted that it was not his idea, he had not been consulted, and he wanted to make that clear. The latest development on the matter comes as part of continued efforts to legalize gaming in Hawaii, as the state is an outlier in the US because it has no form of legal gambling whatsoever.

HB 2570 proposes that at least six online sports betting platforms be available, while prohibiting in-person wagering. The bill outlines a single launch date for all platforms, imposes a 15% tax on adjusted gross revenue, and sets both the application and annual renewal fees at $500,000. Licenses would remain valid for five years, with oversight of sports betting falling under the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism.

    Some Oppose the Bill

Naturally, with such a big step towards gambling in Hawaii being on the horizon, there is some opposition. Opponents of HB 2570 included several government agencies. These include the state attorney general’s office, Hawaii’s police department, and the Department of Health, along with members of the anti-gambling lobby and concerned individual citizens.

The most commonly cited reason for opposition was the potential impact on the community’s well-being. One woman shared that her family lost their home when she was five due to her father’s gambling addiction, which she noted “probably started innocently with sports betting.”

Among the most prominent opponents of HB 2570 is City of Honolulu prosecutor Steve Alm. He told the committee that sports betting is already “tarnishing sports”, referencing several major scandals in MLB and the NBA. He added that sports betting disproportionately affects lower-income individuals, citing a San Diego State University study showing that 96% of bettors lose. Alm also said that this means the system profits from those struggling with addiction, which he argued is not a business the community should support.

Despite these claims, the House Committee still went on with the bill, making Hawaii one of several US states that are considering legalizing sports betting. Another state looking at legalizing the practice is Wisconsin, as tribal leaders are urging lawmakers to accept mobile sports betting.

  • American ‘Quad God’ Ilia Malinin carries 5-point lead into the free skate at Olympics

    [ad_1]

MILAN — Ilia Malinin, widely considered the best figure skater of this generation, could take a big step toward going down as one of the greatest ever Friday night down when the American goes for the gold medal in the men’s free skate at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

The 21-year-old known as the “Quad God” has a five-point lead over Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama and France’s Adam Siao Him Fa after the short program. That would be a big margin for anyone, but it could be insurmountable given who is in first place.

Malinin is undefeated over two-plus years, a stretch of 14 consecutive victories in full competitions. That includes the past four U.S. championships, the last two world titles, and a host of world records — most crucially, the best mark ever for a free skate, a massive score of 238.24 points that pushed him to a 30-point victory at the Grand Prix Final in December.

Yagiyama, the last man to beat Malinin, was second that day. Siao Him Fa finished in fifth.

“Being the favorite is one thing,” Malinin said after his short program, “but actually getting it done and doing it under pressure and having the skate of your life to earn that medal is another thing. I don’t want to get too ahead of myself and say that it’s guaranteed that I’m getting that gold medal. Because, of course, I still have to put in the work.”

In truth, he doesn’t have to do much more than show up.

That’s because the longer nature of the free skate plays even more to his advantage, since it contains seven jumping passes instead of the three in the short program. He has a record-tying seven quadruple jumps scheduled for his program; by comparison, Kagiyama and Siao Him Fa have four in each other free skates.

“It’s not so much the point total, it’s the difference between the placements,” said Scott Hamilton, the 1984 Olympic champion. “Say it’s football. You win by seven points, that’s a touchdown; that’s good. If you win by 10 points, that’s a two-possession victory. You kind of dominated, right? He is winning competitions by 50 points or more. That’s like, seven touchdowns.”

The real drama might not be whether Malinin wins but whether he lands the first quad axel in the Olympics.

The sons of Olympic skaters Tatiana Malinina and Roman Skorniakov, the ever-confident Malinin is the only person ever to land the jump in competition. The reason it is so difficult is that the axel begins facing forward, whereas the other five main jumps in figure skating start facing backward, and that adds another half revolution to the quad axel.

“I’m hoping that I’ll feel good enough to do it,” Malinin acknowledged. “But of course I always prioritize health and safety. So I really want to put myself in the right mindset where I’ll feel really confident to go into it.”

Malinin already has one gold medal from the team event, where he finished a surprising second to Kagiyama in the short program but beat fellow Japanese star Shun Sato in the free skate. That head-to-head win allowed the Americans to defend their team title.

Afterward, Malinin admitted that the pressure of the Olympics had gotten to him in his debut. But those nerves settled during his free skate, and by the time of his individual short program Tuesday night, his fearlessness and spunk was back again.

“Now I feel like I’ve taken over that fight that I had in the team event,” Malinin said, “so now I can really just focus solely on that free program, and let everything happen naturally.”

  • Amazon scraps partnership with surveillance company after Super Bowl ad backlash

    [ad_1]

Amazon’s smart doorbell maker Ring has terminated a partnership with police surveillance tech company Flock Safety.

The announcement follows a backlash that erupted after 30-second Ring ad that aired during the Super Bowl featuring a lost dog that is found through a network of cameras, sparking fears of a dystopian surveillance society.

But that feature, called Search Party, was not related to Flock. And Ring’s announcement doesn’t cite the ad as a reason for the “joint decision” for the cancellation.

Ring and Flock said last year they were planning on working together to give Ring camera owners the option to share their video footage in response to law enforcement requests made through a Ring feature known as Community Requests.

“Following a comprehensive review, we determined the planned Flock Safety integration would require significantly more time and resources than anticipated,” Ring’s statement said.

“The integration never launched, so no Ring customer videos were ever sent to Flock Safety.”

Beyond the Flock partnership, Ring has faced other surveillance concerns.

In the Super Bowl ad, a lost dog is found with Ring’s Search Party feature, which the company says can “reunite lost dogs with their families and track wildfires threatening your community.” The clip depicts the dog being tracked by cameras throughout a neighborhood using artificial intelligence.

And viewers took to social media to criticize it for being sinister, leaving many wondering if it would be used to track humans and saying they would turn the feature off.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit that focus on civil liberties related to digital technology, said this week that Americans should feel unsettled over the potential loss of privacy.

“Amazon Ring already integrates biometric identification, like face recognition, into its products via features like “Familiar Faces,” which depends on scanning the faces of those in sight of the camera and matching it against a list of pre-saved, pre-approved faces,” the Foundation wrote Tuesday. “It doesn’t take much to imagine Ring eventually combining these two features: face recognition and neighborhood searches.”

  • Patriots’ Stefon Diggs to be arraigned and denies assault allegation

    [ad_1]

BOSTON — New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Massachusetts on felony strangulation and other criminal charges stemming from an alleged dispute with his personal chef.

The arraignment at Dedham District Court was postponed until after Super Bowl LX so Diggs could play in the NFL championship game.

According to court records, the woman told Dedham officers she and Diggs argued about money he owed her for her work as his private chef. During the Dec. 2 encounter at his home, she said, he “smacked her across the face” and then “tried to choke her using the crook of his elbow around her neck,” leaving her feeling short of breath.

Diggs’ arraignment was originally slated for Jan. 23 but was moved to Feb. 13 — five days after the Patriots’ 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks — to accommodate his playing schedule.

Diggs’ attorney has said he “categorically denies these allegations,” calling them unsubstantiated and motivated by a financial dispute. The Patriots released a statement saying they support him.

Investigators allege the woman first reported the incident to police on Dec. 16, two weeks after it occurred; she initially hesitated to file charges but later chose to do so, according to court documents.

The arraignment Friday will be the first court appearance in the case. The judge is expected to address bail conditions and set future hearing dates.

  • Florida Polytechnic celebrates opening of new Esports arena

    [ad_1]

LAKELAND, Fla. — Florida Polytechnic University is taking competitive video gaming a step further.

On Friday, the university celebrated the opening of its new Esports Arena.

    What You Need To Know

    • Florida Polytechnic University opened the new $300,000 Esports Arena, which features 20 fully loaded gaming stations
    • Participation in eSports is growing on campus, and university leaders say scholarships are planned in the future
    • Team captain Jannice Rivera says she hopes the expanded program encourages more women to join eSports as they gain recognition alongside traditional athletics

In the world of eSports, student Jannice Rivera stands out.

“I wish more women and more girls felt at home and in a community with eSports, but as eSports has been evolving, we’ve been welcomed a little more and more as time goes on,” Rivera said.

The 21-year-old became the captain of Florida Polytechnic’s eSports varsity teams a little over a year ago. She is one of just three women who are part of the sports program. It’s a space she has been familiar with since learning how to play video games at a young age.

“I was able to, thankfully, get my longtime best friends, that are still friends with me, I was able to get them into it, and we all just started playing together,” she said. “And even though the community wasn’t as welcoming to women back then, that was like 2008/2009. With having friends in it doing it with me, I already felt more comfortable.”

Rivera said that pushed her to apply to Florida Poly to play on a larger scale.

Over time, university leaders said they’ve seen more students become drawn to the digital sport. So far, Florida Poly President Devin Stephenson said the school has about 130 players across 14 teams.

“And now that we have the arena in place, I can tell you, as many young people say today, ‘it’s going to blow up.’ And it will become extremely popular,” Stephenson said.

The new eSports arena is equipped with 20 fully loaded gaming stations. The roughly $300,000 facility was partially paid for with presidential discretionary funds, which Stephenson said was worth every penny.

“This is a very rigorous curriculum that we have here, so we need more and more student development opportunities for them outside of the labs, outside of the classrooms, and eSports gives them that sort of vetting to stretch themselves beyond the pressure of the classroom,” he said.

Florida Poly leaders said the goal is to help players compete on the same level as traditional athletics. The school eventually plans to offer several scholarships to students, and Rivera said she’s looking forward to that.

“The little girl in me feels really excited,” she said. “Now, as time goes on, we’re getting recognized as an actual athletic department. We’re an actual sport, and it can be very lucrative. We have the same sponsors that normal athletics do. We compete in the same way; it’s just in a different setting, and I feel like we can reach a lot of people.”

She said she hopes that includes a lot more women, too.

The Esports Arena is open for competition and recreational use. Students can visit and play for fun during select hours throughout the day.

  • LeBron James becomes oldest player with triple-double

    [ad_1]

LOS ANGELES — LeBron James became the oldest player in NBA history with a triple-double when he put up 28 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 124-104 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night.

At 41 years and 44 days old, James broke the record held by Karl Malone, who recorded a triple-double for the Lakers when he was 40 years and 127 days old.

James scored 14 points in a dominant first quarter, and had 22 points and 12 assists heading to the fourth. He grabbed his 10th rebound with 2:06 to play and checked out moments later, wrapping up another sensational game in his unprecedented 23rd NBA season.

James is headed to the All-Star Game this weekend after being selected for the 22nd time. He got his most recent triple-double on Feb. 1, 2025.

Naji Marshall and Max Christie scored 19 points apiece for the Mavericks, who lost their ninth straight to fall into their longest skid in 28 seasons.

NBA scoring leader Luka Doncic didn’t suit up against his former team, missing his fourth straight game for the Lakers with a mild hamstring strain. Star rookie Cooper Flagg sat out with a sprained foot for Dallas that will prevent him from participating in All-Star weekend at nearby Intuit Dome.

James and Austin Reaves sat out the Lakers’ loss to San Antonio on Tuesday for health maintenance, but both returned in a comfortable victory. Reaves had 18 points and six assists.

Rui Hachimura scored 21 points for the Lakers, who have won seven of 11.

Lakers coach JJ Redick said he expects Doncic to return after the All-Star break. Redick didn’t know whether the Slovenian superstar will play in the All-Star Game after leading the NBA in votes.

Mavericks: At Minnesota on Friday, Feb. 20.

Lakers: Host the Clippers on Friday, Feb. 20.
