  • Patriots Hang on to Beat Falcons 24-23 After Late Extra Point Miss by Atlanta

    FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Drake Maye threw two touchdown passes and had a pair of turnovers in an uneven performance, and the New England Patriots held on for their sixth straight victory, 24-23 over Atlanta on Sunday after Parker Romo missed a potential tying extra point for the Falcons.

    Terrell Jennings had his first career rushing touchdown for the Patriots (7-2).

    New England led 24-17 in the fourth quarter when Michael Penix Jr. connected with Drake London for a 40-yard gain along the sideline with Christian Gonzalez in coverage. Gonzalez was injured on the play after being landed on the play, leaving the Patriots without their best cornerback with the Falcons in the red zone.

    The Patriots forced a fourth-and-goal on the 8, but London outstretched Carlton Davis III on a jump ball for a toe-tapping touchdown to get the Falcons within a point.

    But Romo’s extra point attempt missed wide right.

    New England went three-and-out on its next possession, giving the ball back to Atlanta with 3:30 remaining.

    The Falcons drove to the Patriots 48 before an intentional grounding penalty on Penix pushed them back and forced them to punt.

    New England faced another third down, but this time Maye completed a pass to Hunter Henry for a 17-yard gain that allowed the Patriots to run out the clock.

    Maye finished 19 of 29 for 259 yards, but was sacked six times. He also had an interception and was strip-sacked just before halftime to set up a touchdown by Atlanta.

    The Falcons have lost their last eight meetings with the Patriots. Atlanta hasn’t won in Foxborough since 1998.

    Penix passed for three touchdowns and finished 22 of 37 for 222 yards. Bijan Robinson rushed 12 times for 46 yards as the Falcons dropped to 0-5 when he rushes for fewer than 75.

    Falcons: LG Matthew Bergeron left in the first quarter (ankle). … Edge rusher Leonard Floyd exited in the second with a hamstring injury.

    Patriots: WR Kayshon Boutte was ruled out after leaving in the second quarter with a hamstring issue. … LB Christian Elliss left in the second with a hip injury. … Gonzalez didn’t return after his late injury.

    Despite missing running back Rhamondre Stevenson, the Patriots tried to establish the run at the outset by employing multiple tight end sets to the ball on early downs. It helped open the field for Maye and the passing attack.

    First, Maye connected on a fade to receiver DeMario Douglas for a 16-yard touchdown pass on the Patriots’ opening drive.

    With the game tied at 7 in the second quarter, Maye linked up with Douglas again, this time finding him near the sideline on a post route. Douglas stumbled initially after pulling in the ball, then evaded a few tacklers before falling to the turf after a 58-yard gain to set the Patriots up in the red zone.

    Maye found Stefon Diggs two plays later for an 11-yard TD pass to stretch New England’s lead to 14 points.

    But a Patriots miscue helped the Falcons get it back to single digits just before halftime.

    The Patriots had the ball near midfield with 32 seconds remaining when Maye was strip-sacked by Jalon Walker. The ball was recovered by James Pearce Jr. who returned it to the Patriots 6 before being dragged down by Will Campbell.

    Atlanta scored two plays later via a 2-yard touchdown pass from Penix to London.

    Falcons: Host Indianapolis next Sunday.

    Patriots: At Tampa Bay next Sunday.

  • Auburn Fires Coach Hugh Freeze Following 12th Loss in His Last 15 SEC Games

    Auburn fired coach Hugh Freeze on Sunday, moving on after the Tigers lost for the 12th time in their last 15 Southeastern Conference games.

    The 56-year-old Freeze failed to fix Auburn’s offensive issues in three years on the Plains, scoring 24 or fewer points in 17 of his 22 league games. He also ended up on the wrong end of too many close matchups, including twice this season thanks partly to questionable calls.

    Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin will serve as interim coach for the team’s remaining four games.

    “Coach Freeze is a man of integrity, and we are appreciative of his investment in Auburn and his relentless work over the last three years in bolstering our roster,” athletic director John Cohen said in a statement. “Our expectations for Auburn football are to annually compete for championships, and the search for the next leader of Auburn football begins immediately.”

    Freeze became the eighth Power Four coach fired this season, following moves at Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Oklahoma State, Penn State, UCLA and Virginia Tech. Stanford also has a vacancy after firing Troy Taylor in March.

    Freeze, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February, received much of the blame for the skid. He missed on hand-picked portal quarterbacks Payton Thorne (Michigan State), Arnold (Oklahoma) and maybe even Daniels (Stanford). Freeze also went 1-12 against ranked teams.

    The Tigers owe Freeze $15.8 million, with no mitigation, from a six-year, $39 million deal he signed to replace Bryan Harsin in 2022. Harsin was fired eight games into his second season. He was 9-12 overall and 4-9 in league play.

    Freeze got the boot at 15-19 overall and 6-16 in the conference. The last five losses included more offensive woes. The Tigers scored 17, 10, 10, 17 and 3 in losses to Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Georgia and Missouri and Kentucky.

    Now, the “Auburn Family” is looking for its fourth football coach in seven seasons. The Tigers fired Gus Malzahn in 2020, Harsin in 2022 and now Freeze in 2025. Together, the school will end up paying $52.5 million in buyout fees.

    Freeze and the Tigers showed promise by winning at Baylor to open the season. They were 3-0 and tied with Oklahoma when the season started to unravel.

    The SEC acknowledged that officials missed what should have been a flag before John Mateer connected with wide-open receiver Isaiah Sategna for a 24-yard touchdown in second quarter.

    The following week at Texas A&M, Auburn managed just nine first downs, 177 yards of total offense and went 0 for 13 on third down in another one-possession loss.

    It was more of the same against Georgia, which controlled the game after forcing a questionable fumble at the goal line late in the first half. A touchdown would have given Auburn a 17-0 lead. Instead, the turnover sparked the Bulldogs, who allowed just 40 yards in the second half and won 20-10.

    Nonetheless, Auburn trailed 13-10 until Georgia scored in the waning minutes. So it was another close loss for Freeze, who ended his tenure 2-10 in one-possession games.

  • BYU, Texas Tech Give Big 12 Two Top 10 Teams for 1st Time in 2 Years Ahead of Their Top 25 Showdown

    The Big 12 had two teams in the top 10 of The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll for the first time in two years Sunday, Notre Dame was back in the top 10 after a two-month absence and Oklahoma and Texas made the biggest upward moves.

    The top seven teams were unchanged in the final poll before the College Football Playoff committee releases its first rankings Tuesday night to kick off the run-up to the CFP bracket release Dec. 7.

    The Buckeyes and Hoosiers again were followed by Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon and Mississippi. Losses by Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt and Miami shuffled the Nos. 8, 9 and 10 spots, now held by BYU, Texas Tech and Notre Dame.

    The distribution of first-place votes was the same as last week. Ohio State received 54, Indiana got 11 and Texas A&M one.

    No. 8 BYU and No. 9 Texas Tech gave the Big 12 two teams in the top 10 for the first time since Oct. 29, 2023. The Cougars, who were idle, have their highest ranking of the season. The Red Raiders won at Kansas State and re-entered the top 10 for the first time in three weeks. The two teams face each other this weekend.

    Notre Dame, winner of six straight, was pushed by a one-win Boston College on the road before it won by 15 points and moved up two spots to No. 10. The Fighting Irish were last in the top 10 in Week 3, at No. 8, before a home loss to Texas A&M dropped them to 0-2 and dropped them to No. 24.

    — No. 24 Washington, which was idle, is in the poll for the first time since it finished the 2023 season at No. 2 following its loss to Michigan in the national championship game. The Huskies’ only losses are to No. 1 Ohio State at home and to a then-unranked Michigan on the road.

    — BYU has risen in the poll six straight weeks since making its debut on Sept. 21. The Cougars have gone from No. 25 to No. 8 over that span.

    — Miami’s losses to two then-unranked opponents in three weeks have caused a 16-spot plummet, from No. 2 to No. 18.

    — Ohio State is in the Top 25 for a 90th straight poll, third-most on the active list. Notre Dame is in a 50th straight time, fifth on the active list.

    — Texas made its 800th appearance in the poll, seventh all-time.

    SEC (9 teams) — Nos. 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 13, 15, 19, 23.

    Big Ten (6) — Nos. 1, 2, 6, 20, 21, 24.

  • Sinner Reclaims No. 1 Ranking After Beating Auger-Aliassime in Paris Masters Final

    PARIS (AP) — Jannik Sinner reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in men’s tennis after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the Paris Masters final on Sunday.

    The four-time Grand Slam champion from Italy replaced six-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz at the top as he extended his indoor winning streak to 26 matches, following up victory in Vienna last Sunday with his first Paris title.

    The ninth-seeded Auger-Aliassime needed to win the tournament at La Défense Arena to clinch the eighth and final spot for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin, Italy.

    But he was unable to trouble Sinner in a one-sided contest which saw Sinner at his clinical best as he won his fifth title of the year and 23rd of his career.

    Sinner won on his first match point with a crisp two-handed backhand down the line, tilted his head back and raised his arms. He then patted his heart as he waved his racket to the crowd. ___

  • West Ham Rallies to Beat Newcastle for First Home Win in Eight Months

    West Ham claimed only its second Premier League win of the season — and first at home in eight months — by rallying to beat Newcastle 3-1 on Sunday.

    Jacob Murphy’s fourth-minute opener for Newcastle, which came seconds after Jarrod Bowen struck the post at the other end, failed to spark what proved to be a sluggish performance by the visitors.

    Instead, West Ham grew more into the game and after Lucas Paqueta equalized in the 35th minute with a long-range shot that crept inside the near post, Newcastle defender Sven Botman stretched to block a cross but only succeeded in turning the ball into his own net in first-half stoppage time.

    Substitute Tomas Soucek added a third for West Ham in second-half stoppage time.

    West Ham, whose last home win was against Leicester on Feb. 27, stayed in the relegation zone but climbed above Nottingham Forest into third-to-last place. Forest was the only team West Ham had previously beaten this season.

    West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo had collected just one point from his first four games in charge after replacing Graham Potter.

    Newcastle stayed in 13th place in the 20-team league and is failing to reproduce its exploits in other competitions this season, having won two of its three Champions League matches and advanced to the quarterfinals of the English League Cup.

    Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade were withdrawn at halftime by Newcastle manager Eddie Howe after ineffective displays.

    Later, Manchester City hosts Bournemouth, with second place the prize for the winner.

  • Yamamoto Completes Outstanding October With Game 7 Heroics, World Series MVP

    TORONTO (AP) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto was named World Series MVP for the Los Angeles Dodgers with one of the greatest pitching performances in Fall Classic history, including an epic relief appearance in Game 7 on Saturday night.

    Yamamoto pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in the clincher a day after throwing 96 pitches in a Game 6 win. He also threw a four-hitter in Game 2 that was the first complete game in the World Series since 2015.

    “Yamamoto is the GOAT!” manager Dave Roberts shouted moments before the Dodgers hoisted the World Series trophy.

    The 27-year-old Japanese ace pitched out of a jam in the ninth inning, leaving the bases loaded and the score tied at 4. After cruising through the 10th, he worked around Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s leadoff double to preserve a 5-4 lead and lock up LA’s second consecutive championship.

    Signed from Japan to a $325 million, 12-year contract before last season, Yamamoto was 3-0 with a 1.09 ERA against the Toronto Blue Jays. The 27-year-old struck out 15 and walked two over 17 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and 10 hits.

    The right-hander’s Game 2 gem was his second consecutive complete game of the postseason. He retired the final 20 batters in a 5-1 Dodgers victory.

    Including a victory in Game 2 of last year’s World Series against the New York Yankees, Yamamoto is 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA in four Fall Classic appearances.

    Arizona ace Curt Schilling was the last pitcher to throw consecutive complete games in the postseason, tossing three in a row in the 2001 NL Division Series and NLCS.

    Orel Hershiser had been the last Dodgers pitcher with a solo Series effort, in Games 2 and 5 against Oakland in 1988. Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax pitched two Series complete games each in 1963 and 1965.

    Yamamoto pitched 12 complete games in his last three seasons with the Orix Buffaloes of Japan’s Pacific League before joining the Dodgers.

    The Los Angeles Dodgers are back-to-back World Series champions … beating the Toronto Blue Jays in dramatic fashion in Game 7!!

    The final installment of the series was nothing short of a movie — the Jays took the lead in the third inning with a three-run homer by Bo Bichette. The Dodgers erased the deficit at the last opportunity … tying it up at 4-4 to send it to extra innings.

    It was Will Smith who came through in the clutch in the 11th … hitting a one-run dinger to give the reigning champs the 5-4 lead — which was ultimately enough to seal the victory.


    Yoshinobu Yamamoto was a hero on the mound.  After throwing 96 pitches over six innings in Game 6, he returned to the hill a night later and pitched three scoreless innings.

    It’s safe to say the Japanese superstar’s performance in the series — 3 wins, 17.2 innings pitched, 2 earned runs, and 15 strikeouts — will go down as one of the most impressive in Fall Classic history. No surprise, he was named World Series MVP.

    The Blue Jays had several chances to bring the Commissioner’s Trophy to the North with runners on base late in the game … but it just wasn’t their year.

    The Dodgers are now the first back-to-back champs since the New York Yankees won three in a row from 1998-2000.

    It’s L.A.’s ninth World Series title in franchise history … and it certainly had to fight for it — after going up 2-1 in the series, the Jays bounced back to get a 3-2 advantage before the Dodgers forced the deciding game.

    No word yet on when the parade will be … but we expect the City of Angels to be popping whenever the team hits the streets to celebrate.

    What a series — an instant classic.

  • Blue Jays Infielder Ernie Clement Sets MLB Record With 30 Hits in Postseason

    TORONTO (AP) — With three hits in Game 7 of the World Series on Saturday night, Toronto Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement set a major league record with 30 hits in a single postseason.

    Clement singled in the second inning, singled and scored in the sixth and broke Randy Arozarena’s 2020 record for Tampa Bay with a leadoff double in the eighth, chasing Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Emmet Sheehan.

    Clement also extended his hitting streak to 13 games, a Blue Jays postseason record. Toronto catcher Pat Borders had a 12-game hitting streak in 1992.

    Playing in his first postseason, Clement boosted his batting average to .417 by getting three hits in his first four at-bats of Game 7. He has one home run and nine RBIs for the Blue Jays.

    Clement was drafted by Cleveland in 2017 but designated for assignment in September 2022. He was claimed by the Athletics later that month but released the following spring before signing a minor league deal with Toronto.

    Clement played in a career-high 157 games during the regular season, appearing at all four infield positions. He hit .277 with nine home runs and 50 RBIs.

    He set career highs with 12 home runs and 51 RBIs for the Blue Jays in 2024.

  • No. 5 Georgia Rallies and Escapes ‘Cocktail Party’ With a 24-20 Victory Against Florida

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Gunner Stockton threw two touchdown passes, Chauncey Bowens scored on a late 36-yard run and No. 5 Georgia escaped the rivalry known as the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” with a 24-20 victory against Florida on Saturday.

    It was the Bulldogs’ fifth consecutive victory in the series and their eighth in the last nine meetings. But this one was closer than any of those others.

    Georgia stopped Florida on a fourth-and-1 at the Bulldogs 18-yard line with a little less than eight minutes to play, a momentum-turning moment in a back-and-forth game. Stockton and Zachariah Branch took over from there, putting Georgia (7-1, 5-1 Southeastern Conference) in position for its fourth come-from-behind victory in six league games.

    Bowens darted up the middle following the duo’s second connection and scampered untouched to the end zone.

    Florida (3-5, 2-3) had a chance late, but DJ Lagway’s deep pass short-hopped intended receiver J. Michael Sturdivant. Sturdivant got behind the defense and probably would have scored had the pass not been badly underthrown.

    Stockton, a noted alligator hunter in the offseason, completed 20 of 29 passes for 223 yards. Branch caught 10 passes for 112 yards.

    Bowens and Nate Frazier combined for 115 yards on the ground.

    Florida played inspired football in its first game since firing coach Billy Napier. Receiver Eugene Wilson III was the biggest benefactor of Napier’s departure. He more than doubled his receiving yards on the season, finishing with nine catches for 121 yards and a touchdown.

    Interim coach Billy Gonzales made an aggressive call to go for it on fourth down, but giving the ball to Jadan Baugh up the middle was as predictable as anything Napier did in his four seasons with the Gators.

    Georgia avoided becoming another top-10 team to lose Saturday and should stay put in the top five of the next AP College Football Poll. No. 9 Vanderbilt and No. 10 Miami lost on the road, with the Commodores falling at Texas and the Hurricanes dropping a game at SMU.


    Georgia loses two defenders

    The Bulldogs lost two starting defenders in the first half.

    Defensive lineman Jordan Hall injured his right knee on Georgia’s first defensive series. Hall’s leg got slammed into when teammate Raylen Wilson tackled Eugene Wilson III over the middle. Hall was helped off the field and into the locker room. The team quickly ruled him out for the game.

    Defensive back KJ Bolden was ejected for targeting in the second half. He was penalized 15 yards for leading a tackle with his helmet.


    Florida receiver watches second half in a walking boot

    Florida freshman receiver Dallas Wilson came out of the locker room after halftime wearing a walking boot on his right foot. Wilson caught one pass for 7 yards in the first half.

    He missed the first four games this season with a left foot injury. He scored three touchdowns in his first two college games but has been relatively quiet since.

    Georgia: The Bulldogs have too many holes to be considered a threat in the playoffs. Branch is the team’s only offensive star, and the Dawgs rank last in the SEC in sacks.

    Florida: Trey Smack set a school record with his ninth career field goal of 50 yards or longer, breaking a tie with Caleb Sturgis. Smack’s 54-yarder in the fourth put the Gators ahead 20-17.

    Georgia plays at Mississippi State next Saturday.

    Florida plays at Kentucky next Saturday.

  • Isaac Brown and Keyjuan Brown Help No. 16 Louisville Rush Past Virginia Tech in 28-16 Victory

    BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Isaac Brown rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown before leaving late with a leg injury and Keyjuan Brown scored twice in the second half to lift No. 16 Louisville to a 28-16 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday.

    Miller Moss added a touchdown pass for the Cardinals (7-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who rallied from a 16-7 halftime deficit to win their third straight game. Louisville also kept alive its hopes of making it to the ACC championship game.

    Moss threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Caullin Lacy early in the third quarter to pull the Cardinals within two points at 16-14. Lacy’s 65-yard punt return minutes later then set up Keyjuan Brown’s 2-yard touchdown run that gave the Cardinals a 21-16 lead.

    Keyjuan Brown put things away for the Cardinals late in the fourth, scoring on a 25-yard run with 2:16 to go. Keyjuan Brown finished 94 yards, part of a day during which Louisville rushed for 235 yards.

    Virginia Tech (3-6, 2-3) was led by Kyron Drones, who rushed for 85 yards and a touchdowns and also threw for a score. But the Hokies were shut out in the second half and amassed less than 100 yards in the final 30 minutes.

    Louisville: The Cardinals showed championship mettle on the road, scoring three second-half touchdowns and shutting out the Hokies. But the win possibly came with a cost as Isaac Brown, who entered as the ACC’s second-leading rusher, left with a lower leg injury with less than six minutes remaining.

    Virginia Tech: The Hokies simply didn’t do enough offensively in the second half to pull off the upset. They only had seven first downs and got into Louisville territory just twice in the second half.

    Louisville: Hosts California on Saturday.

    Virginia Tech: Plays at Florida State on Nov. 15.

  • Shohei Ohtani to Start World Series Game 7 for Dodgers Against Blue Jays and Max Scherzer

    TORONTO (AP) — Shohei Ohtani will start Game 7 of the World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Toronto Blue Jays, showcasing the two-way star on the mound in the sport’s biggest game.

    Starting Ohtani makes more sense for the Dodgers than using him in relief.

    Under a rule adopted for the 2022 season, pitchers who start games in the batting order can remain in the game as a designated hitter after leaving the mound. If Ohtani would start the game only as a DH and then would take the mound, the Dodgers would lose their DH and pitchers would have to bat in that slot if Ohtani was relieved.

    Ohtani has never pitched in relief during his Major League Baseball career. He made a handful of relief appearances in Japan for the Pacific League’s Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, mostly as a rookie in 2013. He closed out Japan’s victory in the 2023 World Baseball Classic final against the United States, striking out then-Los Angeles Angels teammate Mike Trout for the final out.

    Ohtani is batting .318 in the World Series with three homers, five RBIs and eight walks. He is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA, striking out six and walking one in his Game 4 start as he threw 93 pitches.

    Max Scherzer is to start for Toronto, becoming only the fourth pitcher to start multiple winner-take-all Game 7s.

    Only Bob Gibson (1964, ’67, ’68) and Lew Burdette and Don Larsen (both 1957 and ’58) have started multiple winner-take-all Game 7s in the World Series. Burleigh Grimes started Game 7 in 1920 and ’31, but his first was in a year the Series was best-of-nine.

    Scherzer also started the last World Series Game 7 in 2019, boosted by a cortisone injection for an irritated nerve near his neck. Mad Max didn’t have a clean inning and left after five trailing by two runs before his Washington Nationals rallied to win 6-2 in Houston.

  • Texas QB Arch Manning Available to Play Against No. 9 Vanderbilt After Clearing Concussion Protocol

    AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas quarterback Arch Manning is available to play for the No. 20 Longhorns on Saturday against No. 9 Vanderbilt after clearing concussion protocol.

    Manning was not listed on Texas’ injury report filed Friday night with the Southeastern Conference. Manning had been listed as questionable on Wednesday, but coach Steve Sarkisian also said his quarterback was practicing and making “good progress” during the week.

    Manning was injured in Texas’ 45-38 overtime win over Mississippi State when he led a 17-point fourth-quarter rally. Matthew Caldwell entered the game in overtime and threw the winning touchdown pass.

    Manning has passed for 1,795 yards and 15 touchdowns. A preseason favorite for the Heisman Trophy, Manning struggled for much of the early season but played his best game against Mississippi State with 346 yards passing and three touchdowns. He passed for 169 yards in the final quarter.

  • Wembanyama Leads Spurs to Their First 5-0 Start With 27 Points and 18 Rebounds in Win Over the Heat

    SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Victor Wembanyama had 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and five blocked shots, and the San Antonio Spurs improved to 5-0 for the first time in franchise history by beating the Miami Heat 107-101 on Thursday night.

    San Antonio won four straight to open a season on three previous occasions, most recently 2017. The Spurs, Heat and Sacramento Kings were the only franchises never to open a season 5-0. Miami couldn’t prevent San Antonio from exiting that club despite a determined effort.

    Bam Adebayo had 31 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for the Heat in a matchup of All-Star centers.

    The Heat were without Norman Powell (strained groin), Tyler Herro (ankle), Kasparas Jakucionis (strained groin) and Nikola Jovic (bruised hip), but the depleted roster made a strong push in the fourth quarter before Miami’s three-game winning streak was snapped.

    The Heat had a 17-1 run in the first 4:35 of the final quarter, with Wembanyama’s second free throw the lone point. The Heat had a 29-20 scoring advantage in the final quarter but the Spurs closed the game on an 8-3 run to preserve their winning streak.

    San Antonio had six players score in double figures, including 21 points from Stephon Castle. Castle added eight assists and six rebounds, and Devin Vassell added 17 points.

    Wembanyama has had at least one block in 90 straight games, the fourth-longest streak in league history.

    Wembanyama exhorted the fans to get out of their seats and cheer after he rose from the court following a foul by Andrew Wiggins with 14.6 seconds remaining in the game. The fans didn’t need any persuading as they had already been standing to watch team history.

    Heat: Visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

  • LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward Resigns, 4 Days After the Firing of Football Coach Brian Kelly

    LSU athletic director Scott Woodward resigned under pressure from the post he’s held for six years on Thursday night, four days after the firing of football coach Brian Kelly and a day after Republican Gov. Jeff Landry said Woodward would not hire Kelly’s replacement.

    Woodward, a Baton Rouge native and LSU graduate, was hired as athletic director at his alma mater in April 2019. Since then, LSU has won national championships in football, baseball (twice), women’s basketball and gymnastics.

    “We thank Scott for the last six years of service as athletic director,” LSU Board of Supervisors chairman Scott Ballard said. “He had a lot of success at LSU.

    “Our focus now is on moving the athletic department forward and best positioning LSU to achieve its full potential.”

    Verge Ausberry, LSU’s executive deputy athletic director, will replace Woodward on an interim basis and lead the search for a football coach, the university announced.

    In an open letter to LSU fans, Woodward said, “Our University will always hold a special place in my heart and I will never be too far from LSU.”

    “Others can recap or opine on my tenure and on my decisions over the last six years as Director of Athletics, but I will not,” Woodward said. “Rather, I will focus on the absolute joy that LSU Athletics brings to our state’s residents and to the Baton Rouge community.”

    When Woodward was hired in 2019, James Carville, a political pundit who graduated from LSU, taught there and was named to the university’s Manship School of Mass Communication’s Hall of Fame, hosted a welcome party for him at his house in New Orleans.

    In a phone interview with The Associated Press on Thursday night, Carville, a Democrat, expressed disgust at the circumstances surrounding Woodward’s sudden departure.

    “The Louisiana governor and the LSU board has damaged the reputation of our university,” Carville said. “Landry’s IQ is the equivalent of the temperature of dishwater.

    “The LSU board is weak and pathetic,” Carville added. “This is not about my politics. It’s about my university.”

    Landry on Wednesday was hosting a news conference about government matters not concerning LSU when he was asked about the LSU coaching situation and asserted that Woodward would not be involved in the selection of the next coach.

    Under Woodward, the football program bought out former coach Ed Orgeron for about $17 million in 2021, and it now must pay Kelly’s buyout of about $53 million, which is among the largest in the history of college sports.

    Texas A&M’s $77 million buyout of former coach Jimbo Fisher, who was fired in 2023, is the largest.

    Woodward was Texas A&M’s athletic director when Fisher was hired to coach the Aggies in December 2017. But Woodward already had been at LSU for two years when A&M, in 2021, gave Fisher a contract extension that effectively doubled the cost of his buyout.

    Still, Landry assigned blame for Fisher’s buyout to Woodward.

    “This is a pattern,” Landry said. “Right now, we’ve got a $53 million liability. … We are not doing that again.”

  • WNBA and Players Union Agree to 30-Day Extension for CBA Negotiations, AP Source Says

    NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA and players union have agreed to a 30-day extension to continue negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, a person familiar with the decision said Thursday.

    The league offered on Tuesday to push back the deadline and on Thursday the union accepted, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.

    The current CBA was set to expire on Friday and tensions have been rising in recent weeks as the sides try to work toward a new deal.

    The new Nov. 30 deadline gives the sides more time to come up with a new deal that would be transformational for the players in terms of salary. In 2019, when the last CBA deal had expired, the sides agreed to a 60-day extension and eventually ratified the current CBA in January 2020.

    The Athletic was the first to report the extension.

    The sides have had meetings over the past few days, including in New York on Thursday.

    Had an extension not been reached by Friday, the sides would have had three options: let things continue as is, have the players go on strike or the owners lock them out. A strike or lockout didn’t really make sense for either side to do.

    Players have already been paid for the past season and they have health insurance through April 30, 2026. There are no major events for the league on the immediate horizon until an expansion draft for new teams Portland and Toronto. The expansion draft for Golden State took place last December.

    The players exercised their right to opt out of the current CBA last year with hopes of getting, among other things, increased revenue sharing, higher salaries, improved benefits and a softer salary cap.

    The WNBA’s offers to this point have clearly not been to the players’ liking, although it is unclear how far apart the sides are in terms of salary parameters. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said during the WNBA Finals that the league — like the players — wants a “transformative deal” done with significant increases to salary and benefits.

    “Call Her Daddy” host Alex Cooper made her first World Series appearance — joining fellow celebs Charlize Theron and Ellen Pompeo in the stands.


    Former “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak kept it classy … buttoned-up in a crisp shirt as he took in the action from seats near home plate.

    Jason Bateman is proving he’s one of the most die-hard Dodger fans in Hollywood … attending his third straight World Series game, while Chris Pine went to his second in a row.

    Sports stars made their way to Chavez Ravine as well … including Puka Nacua, Christen Press, Tobin Heath, CC Sabathia, Aaron Hicks, Todd Gurley, Joe Torre — and of course, Dodgers part-owner Magic Johnson, who threw out the first pitch.

    That’s not all the stars who showed up … Anthony Anderson, YG, Maude Apatow, Leslie Mann, Jessi Ngatikaura and Jen Affleck were all in the building too.

    Unfortunately, the Dodgers dropped another one at home — losing 6-1 and now trailing 3-2 in the series … which heads back to Toronto for Game 6.

    We might not see as many stars in the stands up north … but you can bet Drake will be ready to show out.

  • Blake Snell’s Latest World Series Letdown Puts Dodgers on Brink of Defeat

    LOS ANGELES (AP) — Blake Snell came into the World Series on a dominant roll. That ended abruptly against the Toronto Blue Jays.

    The two-time Cy Young Award winner gave up two home runs on his first three pitches in Game 5, then faltered again late in a 6-1 loss Wednesday night that put the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers on the brink of a Fall Classic defeat.

    The Blue Jays took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series and can steal the title away from LA with a win Friday in Game 6 in Toronto.

    Snell recovered after allowing back-to-back homers to Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but then couldn’t finish the seventh inning. He left runners on first and third after a walk, a single and two wild pitches, and the Blue Jays leading 3-1. Still, the sellout crowd of 52,175 stood to applaud.

    Edgardo Henriquez replaced Snell and walked Guerrero. Addison Barger, who singled and moved up on Snell’s pair of wild pitches, scored on Henriquez’s wild pitch, making it 4-1.

    Schneider sent Snell’s first pitch of the game into left field. Guerrero followed two pitches later with a 394-foot shot to left, too, giving the Blue Jays a lead they never surrendered. Each of the first three pitches were fastballs, and Snell’s next 22 pitches after that were offspeed.

    Snell gave up five runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings, struck out seven and walked four.

    He began strongly in his first postseason with the Dodgers, who signed him to a $182 million, five-year deal last winter. Snell had an 0.86 ERA in his first three starts.

    In the NL Division Series, Snell allowed one hit in six shutout innings and struck out nine as the Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 to take a 2-0 series lead.

    The left-hander nicknamed “Snellzilla” was stellar in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. He allowed one baserunner in eight shutout innings and struck out 10 while facing the minimum, something no one had done in the postseason since Don Larsen’s World Series perfect game in 1956.

    The Dodgers went on to sweep the Brewers in four games and go into the World Series with a shot of momentum.

    Then Snell got shelled in Game 1, losing 11-4. He gave up five home runs, including three of the nine Toronto had in the sixth inning. Before that, Snell had allowed just two runs in 21 innings and struck out 27 batters.

    On Wednesday, Snell got no help from a stone-cold Dodgers’ offense that managed just one run and four hits. Shohei Ohtani was hitless with a strikeout. Will Smith and Mookie Betts struck out twice, while Freddie Freeman had three strikeouts.

    The defense let him down, too.

    Betts and Tommy Edman faltered in the first couple innings on potential ground-ball double plays, forcing Snell to work longer. He threw a total of 116 pitches, 69 for strikes.

  • Emma Sears Has a Hat Trick in a 6-0 USWNT Victory Over New Zealand

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Emma Sears scored three goals and Catarina Macario added twp as the U.S. women’s national team routed New Zealand 6-0 on Wednesday night.

    It was the most goals scored by the United States in a match under coach Emma Hayes. Michelle Cooper had two assists.

    Cooper sent Lily Yohannes’ backheel pass over to Sears, who scored her first goal in the eighth minute to give the U.S. the early lead.

    Macario, who plays for Chelsea, doubled the lead with her first goal in the 34th minute and Rose Lavelle scored a curling shot into the side netting from distance to make it 3-0 before halftime. It was Lavelle’s 27th career goal.

    Sears, who plays for Racing Louisville in the National Women’s Soccer League, scored her second in the 55th, again with an assist from Cooper. Macario added her second in the 66th to make it 5-0. Macario has four two-goal games for the United States.

    Sears got her third in the 84th, for the national team’s first hat trick since Sophia Wilson did it against Uzbekistan in 2022.

    “Honestly, I want to give a lot of credit to my teammates. I felt like, especially with that first goal, Michelle served it on a platter for me to just tap it in,” Sears said. “And the goals following, I felt like it was good to carry on that momentum throughout the game and ultimately get the win.”

    Defender Kennedy Wesley started in her debut, becoming the 25th player to earn her first cap under Hayes. The backline of Wednesday’s starting lineup had just 11 combined appearances for the national team.

    It was the team’s third match of the international window. The United States had 113 days off before falling to Portugal 2-1 in the opener last week in Pennsylvania then won 3-1 in the second match in East Hartford, Connecticut, on Sunday. The loss in the first match to Portugal was just the team’s third under Hayes.

    “I think it’s exciting to see the future of this team,” Cooper said. “Obviously our first game didn’t go as we wanted to, but to be able to have multiple players change our starting lineup and still be able to raise the level and get a win out of that, and then continue that momentum into this last game, that really speaks to the future of this team and what Emma has done here.”

    New Zealand lost both of its friendly games during the international window, both to Mexico.

    The match was played at CPKC stadium, the first purpose-built women’s soccer stadium in the world, which is home to the NWSL’s Kansas City Current. Cooper plays for the Current.

    Before the game the New Zealand squad honored former captain Ali Riley, who has retired from professional soccer. Riley played 163 matches for the team.

    The United States has played without many of the stars that won the gold medal at the Olympics. Trinity Rodman has a right MCL injury, while Wilson and Mallory Swanson are on maternity leave.

    The United States went into the match with a 19-1-1 record against New Zealand. The two teams last met ahead of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, with the U.S. winning both in Auckland.

    The United States plays its final matches of the year against Italy on Nov. 28 in Orlando, Florida, and on Dec. 1 in Fort Lauderdale.

  • Twins Hire Former Coach and Ex-Pirates Skipper Derek Shelton as Next Manager, AP Source Says

    MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have picked former bench coach Derek Shelton as their next manager, a person with knowledge of the decision confirmed Wednesday night.

    The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the hire. Major League Baseball encourages clubs to avoid spotlighting big moves during the World Series.

    Shelton served as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates for five-plus years before he was fired on May 8, just 40 games into this season. The 55-year-old was the bench coach for the Twins in 2018 and 2019 under two different managers, Paul Molitor and Rocco Baldelli.

    Baldelli was fired the day after the regular season ended with a 527-505 record over seven years, plus 3-8 in the postseason.
