  • Bengals Receiver Ja’Marr Chase Suspended 1 Game by NFL for Spitting on Steelers’ Jalen Ramsey

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase was suspended without pay for one game on Monday for spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Chase spat on Ramsey during a confrontation in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game. Ramsey grabbed Chase by the face mask and punched him, which resulted in Ramsey’s ejection.

In announcing the suspension, the NFL said Chase was disciplined under a rule that applies to “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”

When asked if officials saw Chase spit on Ramsey, referee Bill Vinovich told a pool reporter after the game that “we did not see anything that rose to that level at all.”

Chase will miss the Bengals’ home game against New England this weekend. He has a right to appeal the suspension.

Cincinnati is 3-7 and has lost three straight.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor said before the league announced the suspension that he had talked to Chase about the incident.

“It’s like we are trying to make something out of this situation. It’s the only thing that’s kind of upset me as I’m sitting in here,” Taylor said. “For a guy that has done everything we can to build our organization around, he’s been awesome. Not perfect. I’m not perfect. Trust me, I made plenty of mistakes yesterday (that) people don’t see on camera. Unfortunately his was. He’s going to have to own up for that. That will be part of his journey.”

It’s the second time this season that the league has disciplined a player for spitting. Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was initially suspended one game for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during the first quarter of the Sept. 4 season opener. Carter eventually forfeited his Week 1 game check worth $57,222 and avoided missing any more games because the ejection happened early in the game and the league applied that as time served.

According to the NFL Players Association database, Chase will be docked at least $448,333,33 in base salary as a result of the suspension.

  • Josh Allen Has 3 TDs Passing, 3 Rushing to Outduel Baker Mayfield as Bills Beat Buccaneers 44-32

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen threw for three touchdowns and rushed for three more, the last on a rugged 9-yard run with 2:35 left that secured the Buffalo Bills’ 44-32 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The eighth-year starter and reigning MVP became the first player with two games of three TDs passing and rushing. He did it last year in a 44-42 loss at the Los Angeles Rams.

This time, Allen outdueled fellow 2018 first-round draft pick Baker Mayfield in a shootout that featured nine lead changes.

The Bills benched struggling receiver Keon Coleman in a bid to spark their passing game, and each of Allen’s three touchdown passes went for 25 yards or more. Running back Ty Johnson scored on a 52-yard catch-and-run, Allen found Tyrell Shavers open deep for a 43-yard touchdown, and James Cook scored on a 25-yard reception.

Allen provided the go-ahead score, a 5-yard TD run with 9:06 left. He finished 19 of 30 for 317 yards, and the Bills overcame his two first-half interceptions.

He punctuated his final TD run with a massive spike of the ball. Taking off out of the pocket, Allen was hit at the 4-yard line, and then corralled by Bucs defenders at the 2 before Buffalo’s offensive linemen shoved him across the goal line.

Buffalo (7-3) rebounded from a 30-13 loss at Miami in which Allen and the offense failed to push the ball downfield.

Tampa Bay (6-4) has lost two straight and four of seven.

The outcome was decided with 1:44 left when Mayfield lost a fumble when being sacked by DaQuan Jones. Mayfield finished 16 of 28 for 173 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a TD.

Sean Tucker rushed for 106 yards and two TDs, and he scored on a 28-yard catch to put the Buccaneers up 32-31 early in the fourth quarter.

The teams began exchanging offensive blows from the beginning in a first half that featured five lead changes and ended with Buffalo leading 21-20 despite possessing the ball for just nine minutes and 50 seconds.

    Bills revamp their receivers

Coleman was a healthy scratch for the first time in his two-year career. Gabe Davis made his season debut after being elevated from the practice squad, and Mecole Hardman made his Bills debut after being signed off the practice squad on Saturday.

Buccaneers: CB Jamel Dean did not return after hurting his hip in the first quarter.

Bills: Hardman did not return after sustaining a calf injury in the second half.

The University of Wyoming was represented by a delegation of students, staff, administrators, trustees and 15 marching band members to honor Allen, one of the school’s most high-profile alums. The school hosted several events over the weekend and was an official sponsor of the game.

The visit comes with Allen scheduled to travel to Laramie for the Cowboys’ game against Nevada on Saturday, when the quarterback’s jersey will be retired. Allen played three seasons at Wyoming before selected seventh overall by Buffalo in 2018.

Buccaneers: Play at the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

Bills: Visit the Houston Texans on Thursday night.

  • Falcons QB Michael Penix Injures Knee Against Panthers and Replaced by Kirk Cousins

ATLANTA (AP) — Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was questionable to return after injuring his left knee when he was hit by Carolina Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig in the third quarter Sunday.

Penix was hit just after he released the ball on third down and the ball fell incomplete. He started to walk off the field, then sat down and waited for the athletic training staff. Penix walked to the sideline under his own power and was examined in the injury tent.

He came out and sat down on the bench while backup quarterback Kirk Cousins talked with Falcons quarterback coach D.J. Williams.

Penix was 13 of 16 for 175 yards and the Falcons led 21-16 at the time of the injury.

Cousins replaced Penix on the next series. Cousins started one game earlier this season when Penix had a bone bruise on his left knee.

  • Calvin Ridley’s Return for the Titans Ends Abruptly With Ankle Injury Against Texans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley lasted all of one offensive play Sunday before hurting his right ankle and being carted off the sideline to the locker room.

Ridley caught a 13-yard pass from Cam Ward on the Titans ‘ first offensive play against Houston. He was tackled by Azeez Al-Shaair and Calen Bullock. Trainers came out to look at Ridley’s ankle, he shook his head and lay back down on the ground before walking gingerly to the sideline.

Once he got to the sideline, Ridley sat for a couple minutes on the table used in the medical tent. Then he got on a cart for a ride to the locker room.

The team announced he was questionable to return.

This was Ridley’s first game since the Titans’ Oct. 12 loss at Las Vegas. Ridley was limited to six offensive snaps in that game before hurting a hamstring, keeping him out of the last three games. The hamstring injury came just after Ridley had his best game this season against Arizona with five catches for 131 yards.

Ridley is the Titans’ highest-paid player this season. He came in second on the team with 290 yards receiving still looking for his first touchdown catch of the season.

  • BYU Guard Kennard Davis Jr. Suspended Indefinitely for Rules Violation Following Arrest

Davis was held out of the seventh-ranked Cougars’ 86-84 loss to No. 3 UConn on Saturday night, two days after he was involved in a car crash in Utah. After the game, coach Kevin Young announced Davis was suspended.

“To be determined on the length,” Young said.

A Provo police department release said Davis suffered minor injuries in the crash and was charged with DUI after being taken to the police station.

BYU issued a statement saying the school was aware of the allegations and looking into the situation.

The school’s honor code requires all students to abstain from alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee, vaping, marijuana and substance abuse.

Davis was with the team Saturday night but sat on the bench in street clothes. The game was played at TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics, as part of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Series.

Davis started the first two games of the season before sitting out a win Tuesday over Delaware with a leg injury. The 6-foot-6 junior from St. Louis is averaging 9.0 points per game. He previously played two seasons at Southern Illinois.

BYU’s next game is Friday against Wisconsin.

  • Silas Demary Jr. Scores 21 to Help No. 3 UConn Hold off AJ Dybantsa and No. 7 BYU 86-84 in Boston

BOSTON (AP) — Silas Demary Jr. scored 21 points and made a crucial steal to help third-ranked UConn hold off a late rally by No. 7 BYU for an 86-84 victory Saturday night.

Tarris Reed Jr. added 21 points and eight rebounds. Alex Karaban also had 21 points for the Huskies (4-0), who began a five-game stretch that features four ranked opponents. Demary finished with seven assists, five rebounds and two steals.

The game was played at TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics, as part of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Series.

Highly touted BYU freshman forward AJ Dybantsa, who grew up just outside Boston and is considered a potential No. 1 pick in the NBA draft next summer, led the Cougars (3-1) with 25 points.

Richie Saunders added 17 and Robert Wright III finished with 16.

UConn led 82-77 when Dybantsa dropped in a layup with under a minute to play. Two free throws by Demary made it 84-79, but a 3-pointer by Dawson Baker cut the margin to two.

Malachi Smith was fouled and hit one of two throws. The Cougars had a chance to tie the game, but Demary knocked the ball away from Wright. Solo Ball then made a free throw to push the lead back to four with 18 seconds left.

The Huskies had 21 assists on 30 field goals. BYU managed just seven assists on 29 baskets.

The Cougars played without starting point guard Kennard Davis Jr., arrested on suspicion of DUI following a crash in Utah on Thursday. The school said in a statement it was aware of the allegations and looking into them.

Davis was with the team Saturday but sat on the bench in street clothes. He started the first two games of the season before sitting out a win over Delaware on Tuesday with an injury.

Cougars senior forward Keba Keita was helped off the court with 8:51 left in the first half after appearing to take a blow to his head while fighting for a loose ball.

UConn: Hosts No. 5 Arizona on Wednesday.

BYU: Hosts No. 24 Wisconsin on Nov. 24.

  • Texas A&M Announces New 6-Year Contract for Coach Mike Elko After Historic Comeback

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Texas A&M announced that coach Mike Elko received a new six-year contract on Saturday, hours after the third-ranked Aggies mounted the biggest comeback in school history to remain undefeated.

Elko’s new deal replaces the six-year contract he signed when joining the Aggies before last season after Jimbo Fisher was fired. It runs from 2026-2031.

The Aggies trailed 30-3 at halftime before rallying to beat South Carolina 31-30 on Saturday to improve to 10-0 and 7-0 in Southeastern Conference play as they aim for their first appearance in the College Football Playoff. It’s their first 10-0 start since 1992.

“(Elko) has not only elevated our on-field performance over the last two seasons, but he has also begun building this program for a strong and sustainable future in the modern world of college athletics,” Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts said in a release. “We’ve made a programmatic decision to enhance our program in every way possible, and coach Elko continues to embody discipline and values at the highest standard. His vision aligns perfectly with what we believe Texas A&M should represent, and I’m thrilled to continue this journey with him as he leads Aggie football into an incredibly bright future.”

Elko’s previous contract paid him $7 million a year and included incentives that could push that number much higher. The new contract is reported to give Elko a big raise, but the school did not immediately release details of his financial compensation. Texas A&M said the contract “enhances Elko’s base salary and includes escalators tied to College Football Playoff appearances.”

It added that the contract also includes an escalating model for assistant coaches and support staff that will provide increases to salary pools and incentives.

“Texas A&M has the potential to be one of the nation’s premier football brands and a consistent contender for championships,” Elko said in a statement. “This commitment of resources allows us to continue elevating our program toward that goal. From day one, our mission has been to establish a standard of excellence that reflects the passion and pride of the 12th Man, and this support moves us even further along that path.”

Texas A&M is 7-0 in SEC play for the first time and has a 7-0 league record for the first time since coach R.C. Slocum led the Aggies to three straight undefeated seasons in the Southwest Conference from 1991-93. It’s the Aggies’ first 10-win season since 2012 under Kevin Sumlin, when they went 11-2 in Johnny Manziel’s Heisman Trophy-winning season.

The 48-year-old Elko was the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year at Duke in his final season at Duke in 2022. He improved to 18-5 in two seasons at Texas A&M with Saturday’s win.

Elko spent four years as A&M’s defensive coordinator before leaving to become Duke’s coach after the 2021 season. He went 16-9 in two seasons with the Blue Devils after they had won just 10 games combined the three previous years.

  • Broncos’ J.K. Dobbins Needs Foot Surgery and Is Likely Done for Season, AP Source Says

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos running back J.K. Dobbins is heading to injured reserve and needs surgery on his left foot that likely will end his season, a person familiar with the diagnosis told The Associated Press on Saturday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition on anonymity because the team hasn’t provided an update on Dobbins since he was injured last week during an unflagged hip-drop tackle by Raiders defensive end Tyree Wilson late in the third quarter of Denver’s 10-7 win over Las Vegas.

He limped off the field, but concerns about his health dissipated after he returned and carried six times for 25 yards. He finished with 77 yards on 18 carries and the Broncos chewed up the final 4 1/2 minutes in the fourth quarter to secure their seventh straight win.

The next day, though, Dobbins posted an obscenity-laced rant on X, calling for hip-drop tackles to be penalized, and he sought a second medical opinion, which confirmed the injury’s severity.

Dobbins has been the Broncos’ biggest offensive spark. Rookie R.J. Harvey is set to assume the lead running back role Sunday when Denver (8-2) hosts the Kansas City Chiefs (5-4) in an AFC West showdown.

Dobbins ranks No. 3 in the NFL with 774 yards rushing on 5 yards per carry. Harvey is a distant second on the team with 214 rushing yards, and his biggest contributions so far have come in the passing game with four touchdown catches.

On Friday, Harvey, a second-round pick out of Central Florida who has six TDs, said he is eager to carry the load so the Broncos have no drop off in their ground game.

“The game, I feel like, it slowed down a lot for me,” he said. “When I first got here, things were moving quick, moving fast. I definitely feel more comfortable.”

“Definitely excited to showcase my running ability,” Harvey said. “Whatever coach wants me to do, I’m willing to do on the field and help my team the best way possible.”

Said Broncos offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi: “He’s just a guy that’s growing right before our eyes. If his workload increases, we’re going to see his production increase and be real excited about it.”

The Broncos can all but bury the Chiefs, who have won nine consecutive divisional titles, with a win Sunday. But they’re missing several starters in addition to Dobbins.

Star cornerback Pat Surtain II (strained pectoral) and tight end Nate Adkins (knee) will both miss their third straight game, leading tackler Alex Singleton is recovering from surgery last week to remove a cancerous testicular tumor and outside linebacker Jonah Elliss (hamstring) is also out.

  • Texas State Trooper Who Had Run-In With South Carolina’s Nyck Harbor Was Sent Home From Game

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — A Texas trooper who had an altercation with South Carolina’s Nyck Harbor after his touchdown on Saturday was sent home from the game, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

Harbor scored on an 80-yard reception in the second quarter and ran into the tunnel limping following the score. As he and three other players were walking back to the field, the trooper walked in between Harbor and another player and bumped into them as they passed each other.

The trooper and Harbor turned around and the trooper pointed at Harbor with both hands and said something to him. Harbor was quickly pushed away by his teammate and they continued to the field.

The public safety department issued a statement saying the trooper was sent home.

“Our Office of Inspector General (OIG) is also aware of the incident and will be further looking into the matter. No additional information will be released at this time,” the statement reads.

  • Pelicans Fire Coach Willie Green 12 Games Into His Fifth Season

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Pelicans fired Willie Green on Saturday on the heels of a 2-10 start to the season.

Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars, who announced the coaching change, named top assistant James Borrego, a former Charlotte Hornets head coach, as interim coach for the Pelicans. They next play at home on Sunday night against the Golden State Warriors.

Borrego was formerly the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets for four seasons from 2018 to 2022. He also served as interim head coach with Orlando during the 2014-15 season.

Green, hired to his first head coaching job in 2021 by former Pelicans basketball operations chief David Griffin, has gone 150-190 in four-plus seasons.

His Pelicans teams made the playoffs twice, losing in the first round to Phoenix in 2022 and Oklahoma City in 2024. The Pelicans also qualified for the Western Conference play-in tournament in 2023 but were eliminated at that stage by Oklahoma City.

Dumars, hired to take over for Griffin this year as Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations, chose this offseason to stick with Green, who was entering his final season under contract.

The Pelicans opened the regular season with a six-game skid that included three 30-plus-point losses. Green seemed to be finding his footing when the Pelicans won two straight, but they have since lost four in a row, including a 118-104 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night in NBA Cup play.

  • Curry Ties Jordan’s Record, Torches Spurs With 49 Points to Rally Warriors to 109-108 Victory

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry stood at the free-throw line with six seconds remaining and the chance to make history, clinch a come-from-behind victory and silence the deafening roars of the opposing fans.

Curry could not stop smiling. This was his element and he loved it.

Curry scored 31 of his season-high 49 points in the second half as Golden State improved to 1-1 in the NBA Cup.

Wembanyama had 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in 38 minutes, but San Antonio fell to 1-1 in West Group C.

Wembanyama used his 8-foot wingspan to implore the Jackals, the fan group he created, and the sellout crowd to raise the volume in the Frost Bank Center as Curry prepared to take his first free throw with the Spurs leading 108-107. Curry welcomed the jeering.

“Absolutely,” Curry said. “It just keeps you engaged. I’m aware of everything, so it’s pretty fun. I like the free throws at the end of the game. You’ve got to find something to take the nerves out and for me, that’s just embracing the moment, smiling and having a good time. When he started that, especially with their fan, whatever you call them, fanatics, they got up there in the stands right behind the basket. I kind of wanted to acknowledge it, not that it surprised me, so I played into it. Thankfully, I made them.”

One day after announcing an end to his 13-year business partnership with Under Armour, Curry continued to trample his opponents under foot.

Curry donned a pair of Kobe Bryant’s “Mambacita” Nike Kobe 6 shoes during warmups before changing into his own Curry Brand for the second of a two-game set in San Antonio.

“I thought about Kobe a lot and that specific pair, I think it speaks for itself what it means,” Curry said of the shoes that honor the late Kobe and his daughter Gigi Bryant. “Other than that, just something I wanted to take advantage of in that moment and pay tribute. I think it gave me some good energy.”

Saying the business split with Under Armour was “in the best interest of both parties,” Curry entered free agency with his shoe and apparel brand. He demonstrated he is still a wise investment.

Curry tied Michael Jordan’s record for the most games with 40-plus points after turning 30 years old at 44.

Curry had 46 points in leading Golden State to a 125-120 victory over San Antonio on Wednesday.

“That’s pretty cool,” Curry said of the record. “Just from an individual acknowledgement, perspective, just to be able to be in that type of company. Longevity is something I pride myself on, so that was pretty cool.”

Playing in his third game since missing three games with a lingering illness, Curry played the entire third quarter Friday against the Spurs. He had 17 points in the quarter, going 4 for 8 on 3-pointers.

“It’s good to see him out there with his normal run, his normal jog, his normal bounce, his normal rhythm,” Warriors guard Gary Payton II said. “He’s not sick anymore. Once he gets it going, we just try to find him, try to get him the ball to make it easy for us.”

It wasn’t that easy for Curry as he traded baskets with Wembanyama.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr received a technical foul after Jimmy Butler was whistled for pushing Wembanyama out of bounds on a loose ball. Wembanyama made all three free throws to give the Spurs a 92-82 lead with 7:25 remaining.

Curry then scored 14 points in the final 7:12 to rally Golden State in the fourth quarter for the second consecutive game in San Antonio.

“We didn’t take away what we should have,” Wembanyama said of Curry’s stellar shooting.

  • Dell’Orso Scores 20 off the Bench as No. 5 Arizona Beats No. 15 UCLA 69-65 in Hall of Fame Series

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Anthony Dell’Orso scored 20 points off the bench and Jaden Bradley hit the go-ahead 3-pointer to help No. 5 Arizona rally for a 69-65 victory over 15th-ranked UCLA on Friday night in the Hall of Fame Series at Intuit Dome.

The early season neutral-court matchup reunited the longtime Pac-12 Conference rivals, who went their separate ways last season. The Bruins joined the Big Ten, while the Wildcats went to the Big 12.

There were dueling chants of “UCLA” and “UofA” from the crowd that created a postseason atmosphere to match the high level of play in the NBA arena.

Dell’Orso had 13 points in the first half, when he made three 3-pointers. He was limited to a pair of free throws in the second half until hitting a 3 that put Arizona ahead 60-59. Dell’Orso made two free throws with 17 seconds left that gave the Wildcats a four-point lead.

Tyler Bilodeau scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor for the Bruins (3-1). Eric Dailey Jr. added 13 points and Donovan Dent had 11 points and eight assists.

The Bruins opened an eight-point lead behind Bilodeau, the big man who has been playing on the perimeter more this season. His 3-pointer gave UCLA a 57-49 advantage.

Arizona then went on an 11-2 run, capped by Dell’Orso’s 3.

Bradley scored inside, hit a 3-pointer and drove inside again to extend Arizona’s lead to 67-63.

Last season, the Wildcats reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, while the Bruins were beaten by Tennessee in the second round.

The two schools combined to win or share 29 of the final 42 Pac-12 Conference regular-season titles from 1983 through 2024.

It was the 115th meeting between the programs. UCLA leads the series 64-51.

Arizona visits No. 3 UConn on Wednesday.

UCLA hosts Sacramento State on Tuesday.

  • USF loses ground in AAC championship game bid in loss to Navy 41-38

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Eli Heidenreich caught five passes for 146 yards and became Navy’s all-time receiving yards leader, quarterback Braxton Woodson ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter in relief of Blake Horvath and the Midshipmen defeated South Florida 41-38 on Saturday.

Alex Tecza carried 12 times for 126 yards, including an early 76-yard score, and caught Horvath’s lone touchdown pass as Navy (8-2, 6-1 American Athletic Conference) secured a half-game lead in the conference.

Heidenreich has 1,794 career receiving yards and moved past Rob Thompson’s 1,736, compiled from 1965-67.

Byrum Brown threw for 327 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 136 yards and two more scores for South Florida (7-3, 4-2), which scored 22 points in the fourth quarter yet lost its second consecutive road game. The Bulls also lost ground in their bid to reach the conference championship game.

After Heidenreich earlier career-long 82-yard catch from Horvath set up Brandon Chatman’s 4-yard touchdown run to make it 14-3 at the end of the first quarter, his 32-yard catch from Woodson was a crucial moment during an eight-play, 75-yard scoring drive that ended with Woodson’s 20-yard scoring run to make it 34-24.

On Navy’s next possession, Woodson ran 64 yards for the Midshipmen’s third play of 60 or more yards to make it 41-30.

    The takeaway

After another big home win put the Bulls back in the Top 25 for the fifth time this season, South Florida may fall back.

    Up next

  • The Lightning Are Coming to Play the Panthers, for the First Time Since Preseason Penalty-Fest

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Scott Sabourin, officially, has never appeared in a game that mattered on the Florida Panthers’ home ice.

The journeyman forward has faced the Panthers three times, twice at home when he played for Ottawa, once at home when he played for San Jose. His stats from those three games: zero goals, zero assists, zero penalty minutes, one shot on goal and the Panthers went 3-0-0 in those contests by a combined score of 17-5.

Which begs the question: Why will most Panthers fans know his name when Tampa Bay comes across the state to Sunrise on Saturday?

That was the preseason game that shall not be forgotten in this Lightning-Panthers rivalry, a game that degenerated into something so ridiculous that someone wound up getting an assist after being ejected — the refs were so busy ejecting people that night that nobody actually told Florida’s Niko Mikkola he’d been dismissed from the contest, so a goal he contributed to had to be taken off the scoreboard many minutes later.

“Obviously, we all saw what was there,” Panthers defenseman Jeff Petry said.

All the absurdity that night started when Sabourin, who was called up from the AHL for the game, got onto the ice for his first and only shift and jumped Florida’s Aaron Ekblad in what was perceived to be retaliatory for something that happened in another preseason game that week.

The totals from that night: 65 penalties, 13 game misconducts, 312 penalty minutes, six games worth of suspensions being issued (four to Sabourin, two to Lightning defenseman J.J. Moser) and $176,302.10 in fines and forfeited salary for the Lightning alone — including a $100,000 fine to the organization and a $25,000 fine to coach Jon Cooper.

On Saturday, for the first time this regular season, here they go again. And for his part, Ekblad offered nothing Friday to fuel the rivalry.

“Division game, a lot of pace, physicality, all the things you’d expect from a divisional game,” Ekblad said. “So, we’re excited to play.”

It just so happens that Sabourin was called up by the Lightning this week. He’s expected back in Sunrise on Saturday. Maybe it’s just a schedule coincidence. Maybe it’s not.

“I show up every night ready to compete, and I might have gotten a little ahead of myself that time,” Sabourin told the Tampa Bay Times for a story this week. “I might have kind of overshot the runway.

“I just wanted to get in hard on the forecheck, to be honest,” Sabourin added, explaining his version of what happened on the play with Ekblad. “And then, you know, one thing led to another. But day in and day out, you know, I want to compete. I want to be hard to play against, and I want other teams to know that I’m on the ice, right? So, again, that might not have been the best way to go about it, but at the end of the day, the other team will know I’m out there.”

Cooper said this week that Sabourin — who scored a goal, his first at the NHL level in nearly six years, in Tampa Bay’s 7-3 loss to the New York Rangers on Wednesday in his official debut with the team (preseason games don’t actually count) — left an impression in training camp. He didn’t say if Oct. 4 was part of that impression, but the Lightning are dealing with injuries and needed forwards so the move isn’t totally surprising.

“You come into camp, you work hard, you don’t make the team, but you make an impact with the coaching staff and the organization, the players,” Cooper said. “You go back and look at the guys that gave you everything in camp.”

It is a rivalry, for obvious reasons. The Lightning went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020, 2021 and 2022, winning two titles in that span. The Panthers went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2023, 2024 and 2025, winning two titles in that span. The road to the title, in the Eastern Conference, now goes through Florida. The Lightning, for years, had absolute bragging rights when it came to Sunshine State hockey. That is no longer the case.

The Lightning beat the Panthers in the playoffs in 2021 and 2022. The Panthers ousted the Lightning in each of the last two years. The bad blood has probably never been this bad. And while past games — the ones that have counted — have been physical, no Panthers-Lightning game has ever come close to the 300-penalty-minute fightfest that the preseason saw last month.

“If you get into playoffs with a team and if you do it in two consecutive years, that third year, there’s a lot that they don’t forget, neither team forgets,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. “So, that energy comes to the rink, and you know what could happen, and then they drop the puck and it’s usually something completely different. But it’ll be good. It’ll be fun.”

  • Braden Smith Scores 29 and No. 2 Purdue Tops No. 8 Alabama in Season’s First Top-10 Matchup

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Braden Smith scored 29 points, including 21 in the second half, and No. 2 Purdue beat eighth-ranked Alabama 87-80 on Thursday night in the first matchup of top-10 teams this season.

Trey Kaufman-Renn added 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Boilermakers (3-0), who notched the program’s first road win against a top-10, non-conference opponent since winning at Louisville in 1982.

Purdue dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Crimson Tide 52-28. Alabama (2-1) kept it close by hitting 16 of 44 from 3-point range.

Aden Holloway led the Tide with 21 points. Taylor Bol Bowen added 13.

Houston Mallette’s 3-pointer tied the game at 80 with 1:42 remaining, but Smith took over from there. He drove for a layup on the other end and then hit two free throws with 47 seconds left to give the Boilermakers some breathing room.

The game featured 21 lead changes. Kaufman-Renn, Purdue’s leading scorer from last season, missed the first two games to injury and made his debut in Tuscaloosa. He had 17 points and eight rebounds in the first half.

His physical presence ignited a Purdue team that finished with 19 offensive rebounds.

Alabama made up for its deficiencies with high-level 3-point shooting. Six Crimson Tide players combined for 10 3s in the first half. Alabama entered the game shooting only 30.6% from 3 this season but shot a blistering 48% in the first half.

    Purdue hosts Akron on Sunday.

Alabama plays No. 14 Illinois on Wednesday.

  • Kai Trump Shoots 13-Over 83 in LPGA Tour Debut, Leaving Her Last in 108-Player Field

BELLEAIR, Fla. (AP) — Kai Trump shot a 13-over 83 on Thursday in her LPGA Tour debut in The Annika, leaving President Donald Trump’s granddaughter last in the 108-player field.

In breezy afternoon conditions at Pelican Golf Club, the high school senior bogeyed the first four holes and finished the birdie-less round with nine bogeys and two double bogeys.

“I was definitely more nervous than I expected, but I thought I hit a lot of great shots out there,” she said. “I hit a lot of good shots just to the wrong spots.”

“It was pretty cool because I know I hit it far, but kind of playing with the best players in the world and being literally right there or even outdriving on some of the holes, it felt pretty good,” said Trump, the daughter of Donald Trump Jr. “Felt like my game is in a good spot, and especially only being a senior in high school.”

  • Texans’ C.J. Stroud to Miss Second Game Due to Concussion; Davis Mills to Start

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud is still recovering from a concussion and will miss a second straight game Sunday when the Texans visit the Tennessee Titans.

Davis Mills will start for the second week after throwing two TD passes and running for the go-ahead score as the Texans rallied from a 19-point fourth-quarter deficit for a 36-29 win over Jacksonville last week.

Stroud was injured early in the second quarter of a loss to the Broncos on Nov. 2. He scrambled for 6 yards and was hit on the shoulder near the end of his slide by Kris Abrams-Draine and the back of his head violently bounced off the ground.

The Texans will also be without safety Jalen Pitre, who will miss a second game after also sustaining a concussion against the Broncos, and kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn will also be out for a second straight game after injuring a quadriceps against the Broncos.

The concussion to Stroud is his second since entering the NFL in 2023. His first came in December 2023 against the Jets.

Mills is in his fifth season with the Texans and started 26 games combined in his first two seasons before returning to the starting lineup for the first time since 2022 last week.
