  • Mega Millions tickets will climb to $5, but officials promise bigger prizes and better odds

Mega Millions tickets will climb to $5, but officials promise bigger prizes and better odds

    [ad_1]

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The cost of buying a Mega Millions jackpot dream will soon more than double, but lottery officials said they’re confident players won’t mind paying more after changes that will lead to larger prizes and more frequent winners.

Lottery officials announced Monday that it will cost $5 to play Mega Millions, beginning in April, up from the current $2 per ticket. The price increase will be one of many changes to Mega Millions that officials said will result in improved jackpot odds, more frequent giant prizes and even larger payouts.

“Spending 5 bucks to become a millionaire or billionaire, that’s pretty good,” said Joshua Johnston, director of the Washington Lottery and lead director of the group that oversees Mega Millions.

Mega Millions and its lottery compatriot Powerball are sold in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Powerball also is sold in Puerto Rico.

Powerball officials said they have no plans to change that game’s odds or the $2 price for most tickets.

Mega Millions’ hope is that by increasing ticket revenue and rejiggering the odds — now set at 1 in 302.6 million — to something less stratospheric, more people will win jackpots even as prizes grow extraordinarily high, which attracts more players. The goal is to increase revenue and provide more money to state lotteries, which in turn spend it on a variety of government services.

Mega Millions will introduce changes at a time when fewer people are buying tickets and jackpots need to reach ever-higher figures before sporadic players notice and opt to buy a ticket or two. Whereas a $500 million jackpot once prompted lines out convenience store doors, top prizes of $1 billion now often draw more of a ho-hum response.

Those much-hyped jackpot numbers also could take a hit as interest rates fall. That’s because on billboards or other advertisements, state lotteries emphasize the annuity payout for jackpots, distributed over decades from an investment fund. As interest rates have been high, the annuity jackpots have more than doubled the cash prizes that winners nearly always choose.

With an expectation that interest rates will drop, those annuity jackpot figures will decline, so the advertised jackpot won’t seem quite so massive.

Johnston said expected declines in interest rates were not a factor in the upcoming changes.

The biggest motivation was to differentiate Mega Millions from Powerball and attract customers who might now pass on both games, Johnston said.

More than doubling the ticket price is a big move, but Johnston said research shows people feel comfortable spending at least $5 when they buy scratch tickets or chances at the draw games, like Mega Millions. It is the second price increase since the game was created in 2002.

“You pay 5 bucks for your Starbucks,” Johnston noted.

Lottery officials will announce more specifics about the changes in the coming months, he said.

  • Brazil Gambling in Healthy State Ahead of Regulated Market Launch

Brazil Gambling in Healthy State Ahead of Regulated Market Launch

    [ad_1]

A new study, prepared by LCA Consultoria Econômica and commissioned by the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming, shines new light on how gambling affects Brazilian households. According to the report, while Brazil’s sports betting sector records stable growth, its impact on family financial health remains relatively small. New government initiatives should help further reduce gambling harm, ushering in a safe and sustainable market.

Average Spending on Gambling Remains Quite Low

The study aimed to provide a clear understanding of how the betting market functions within Brazil while highlighting the need for robust regulatory safeguards to protect consumers. Data revealed that, on average, gambling represents between 0.2% and 0.5% of total household consumption. Regarding the broader economy, gambling expenditures account for only 0.1% to 0.3% of Brazil’s GDP.

Compared to other forms of entertainment, the spending on gambling pales in significance. According to this study, Brazilian families usually spend from 7.3% to 15.7% of their family income on entertainment in general, underscoring that gambling represents only a fraction of that amount. The study also didn’t discover a correlation between betting expenditure and household debt.

There is no evidence that there was a significant change in household debt due to participation in games and betting.

    LCA Consultoria Econômica study

The study’s findings support Brazil’s growing focus on promoting safe and responsible gambling, even as the country moves closer to the official launch of a regulated sports betting market. However, the nation still struggles to contain black market operators that may offer risky products, leading to excessive gambling. The government has taken measures to limit access to such services, channeling users towards regulated offerings.

Brazil Has Made Efforts to Combat Problem Gambling

Amid concerns over gambling-related harm, Brazilian lawmakers are taking steps to protect vulnerable groups.  Two recent legislative proposals aim to address potential risks associated with the sector. PL 3,718/2024 will ban gambling among middle and low-income senior citizens dependent on social welfare. The bill also recommends spending limits based on a player’s declared income, with restrictions on excessive betting.

Meanwhile, PL 3,745/2024 will set a ceiling for all bettors, preventing them from spending more than 15% of their monthly income on wagers. The bill establishes a general spending limit for all bettors and does not target specific risk groups. Although the recent study shows a relatively low average expenditure on gambling, such measures are necessary to prevent vulnerable individuals from overspending.

Brazil’s regulated betting market will officially launch on 1 January 2025. All operators who hadn’t applied for a license had to cease their operations as of 1 October 2024. The gradual implementation of these regulations is part of a broader effort to create a safe and responsible gaming environment while balancing the potential economic benefits of the expanding market.

  • Betfred to Exit Arizona in November as US Downsizing Continues

Betfred to Exit Arizona in November as US Downsizing Continues

    [ad_1]

Betfred is continuing the downsizing of its American business, which is in line with the company’s earlier announcements. The operator has now confirmed that it will leave Arizona before the end of the year.

Betfred to Put an End to Its Operation in the Grand Canyon State

On Thursday, Betfred said that it will exit Arizona’s mobile sports betting market on November 4. This marks yet another step in the company’s gradual exit from US markets, prompted by suboptimal performance.

Arizona, which launched mobile betting a few years ago, was expected to be one of America’s top betting markets. However, as leading brands continue to dominate the overall sector, smaller brands struggle to achieve sufficient profitability. In fact, Betfred is the fourth mobile sports betting operator to exit Arizona in 2024 alone.

For context, WynnBet, Unibet and Betway departed from The Grand Canyon State earlier this year.

Berfred’s US Business Has Been Struggling

Betfred entered Arizona in February 2022 and was ambitious on securing a larger market share. The company spent significant sums on promotions in hopes of attracting more customers. Betfred has so far spent more than $2.5 million on promotion in Arizona, although its promotional spend drastically declined in 2024.

The operator recorded a peak monthly handle of $5.1 million in September 2023 but has been struggling to live up to this figure ever since. Its highest handle for the current year was recorded in April and stood at $3.8 million. However, this figure was offset by a multitude of winning bets, resulting in a loss for the company.

Betfred proceeded to record an even more significant loss in June, further adding to its woes.

The Operator Departed from Other US Markets Too

Once Betfred exits Arizona, its local partner, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, would be able to form a partnership with another operator, potentially inviting another company to The Grand Canyon State.

Arizona is not the first market Betfred has departed from this year. Several weeks ago, the company ceased operation in Colorado, following exits from Maryland and Ohio.

As of the time of this writing, Betfred still operates mobile betting in Iowa, Pennsylvania and Virginia, as well as retail betting in Louisiana, Nevada and Washington.

  • DraftKings Contributes $5M to Missouri Sports Betting Legalization Campaign

DraftKings Contributes $5M to Missouri Sports Betting Legalization Campaign

    [ad_1]

DK Crown Holdings Inc., the parent company of industry-leading operator DraftKings, has made a significant move in the ongoing effort to legalize sports betting in Missouri by donating $5 million to the “Winning for Missouri Education” campaign. The contribution is Missouri’s most substantial political donation in over 16 years in the push to legalize sports wagering in the state.

    Missouri Represents a Lucrative Opportunity

The massive donation is only part of a broader campaign by DraftKings, FanDuel, and their affiliated companies to support the passage of Amendment 2, a constitutional amendment aimed at legalizing and regulating sports betting in Missouri. Since January, that campaign has raised over $16.5 million, entirely from those leading sports wagering companies.

This newest $5 million donation surpasses the $3.5 million check that DraftKings contributed in August, which then was the single largest donation to the campaign in 2023. The continued flow of seven-figure donations into the committee’s cause underscores the value an open Missouri market represents to sports betting companies.

Public opinion remains mixed. A March poll evaluated support for sports wagering among Missouri voters at 60%, with 25% opposing it. However, an Emerson College poll conducted in June put the score at 52%, suggesting it could be a close vote. While most industry experts agree that Missouri sports betting is a matter of time, stakeholders hope this will happen sooner rather than later.

    The Legislation Faces Significant Opposition

The path to legalization faces some opposition. A coalition called “Missourians Against the Deceptive Online Gambling Amendment” argues that the promises of increased education funding from this proposed sports betting law are deceptive. The group notes that the proposed sports wagering legislation may not provide the revenues the state expects.

Amendment 2 is a bad deal for Missouri. This deceptive measure was written by and for the financial benefit of its out-of-state corporate sponsors and funders.

Brooke Foster, Missourians Against the Deceptive Online Gambling Amendment spokesperson

Caesars Entertainment, another gaming industry giant, surprisingly opposes Amendment 2. The company operates casinos in Missouri, including Horseshoe St. Louis, and has contributed over $4 million to the opposition group. Industry insiders believe the operator does not oppose legalized sports wagering but rather finds the proposed legislation too restrictive due to a limit on how many apps can be associated with a single operator.

As the November vote approaches, both sides continue to rally support. The sports betting industry is betting on a favorable outcome, with DraftKings and FanDuel significantly investing in the pro-gambling campaign with the support of local teams like St. Louis Blues, Kansas City Chiefs, and the St. Louis Cardinals. However, the future of legal sports betting in Missouri remains uncertain.

Betting on NFL Games May Hit $35 Billion • This Week in Gambling

    [ad_1]

The opening week of the American football season is in the books, and betting on NFL games is off to a good start as well. This year, our friends at the American Gaming Association forecast that American sports bettors will place about $35 billion in wagers with legal sportsbooks.

“With the excitement of another NFL season upon us, Americans are placing their bets with the confidence that the legal sports betting market is prioritizing consumer protection and responsibility” said AGA President and CEO, Bill Miller.

The expansion and growth of the legal betting on NFL games across the country is expected to make the 2024 season the most heavily wagered for American football in the seven years of legal betting. According to AGA analysis, legal wagers on the 2023 NFL season totaled $26.7 billion.

Since the last NFL season’s kickoff, Maine, North Carolina, and Vermont have all launched new legal sports betting markets. Additionally, more Americans than ever have participated in gaming-related entertainment over the past twelve months. That exposure and increasing familiarity with the gaming industry is driving widespread confidence in responsible gaming.

Almost all sports bettors from the past year, including those betting on NFL games, are familiar with at least one responsible gaming resource. This consumer awareness of responsible gaming resources is due in large part to industry marketing and advertising. Over 70% of American adults believe that such marketing is being conducted responsibly, an marked increase from last year.

Gaming wins Del Mar Futurity, giving Bob Baffert his 18th career victory in the race for 2-year-olds

    [ad_1]

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Gaming won the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity by 1 3/4 lengths on Sunday, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert his 18th career victory in the Grade 1 race for 2-year-olds.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, Gaming ran seven furlongs in 1:23.02 and paid $9.80 to win. The colt earned a credit toward entry fees for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at the same seaside track north of San Diego in November.

“He relaxed well; he was a bit on his toes before the race so I kept him quiet,” Prat said. “Very straightforward, and leveled out nice. Bob just told me not to rush him and I thought I was in a good spot on my way around the corner.”

Gaming improved to 2-0 in his young career, with earnings of $225,000.

McKinzie Street was second and Citizen Bull, also trained by Baffert, finished third. The trainer’s third entry, Getaway Car, was fourth in the field of seven.

  • Taking a Look at the Sixers’ Futures Bets – Philadelphia Sports Nation

Taking a Look at the Sixers’ Futures Bets – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

The NBA season is just a month and a half away and all the teams (for the most part) have their rosters set. That being said, the sportsbooks have their futures bets pretty much all set for the year. Let’s take a look at the big ones for the Sixers.

    NBA Champion

    Fanduel

has the Sixers tied for third best odds to win the championship with the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks at +900. Ahead of them are the Celtics (+300) and Oklahoma City (+700).

Every year, people usually put the Sixers in the top echelon of the Eastern conference, and each of those years, they have fallen short. Having Joel Embiid will always give a team a chance to win the championship. If Embiid can stay healthy in the playoffs for the first time in his career, then that’s good news for the Sixers championship odds. Seems like a solid bet for anybody riding high for the Sixers.

    Wins

The Sixers are sitting at 52.5 o/u for their wins season total. Last year, the Sixers were on pace for way more than 52 wins before Embiid had his meniscus surgery. After losing him for 2 months, they finished with just 47 wins and stuck in the play-in tournament. The Celtics finished first with 64 wins, blowing away second place by 14 games.

It’s obvious that the Sixers are better than last year. They added Paul George to take more weight off of Embiid to keep him healthier into the playoffs. Most believe they will battle the Celtics for the number 1 seed in the east, which would definitely put them above 52 wins. If the Sixers live up to expectations, then their win total will be well above 52.5. Bet the over.

    Points Leaders

Joel Embiid trails only Luka Doncic in the race for the regular season scoring champion. At +300, most people know that Embiid will continue his scoring dominance next year. Last year he scored more points than had minutes played, so he would be a safe bet for scoring champion.

More intriguing to see is Tyrese Maxey way down the list with +35000 odds for scoring champion. In every year of his career, Tyrese Maxey has improved his offensive game by a lot. He went from a high 20’s three point shooter to one of the best in the league in just one year. Last year he finished 15th in scoring. If he continues to get better like he has, then he could end up being a top 7-10 scorer in the league. He won’t win the scoring title, but it’s interesting to see how underrated he is around the league. He could become a top-10 player in the league this year.

It’s Time for NFL Betting! • This Week in Gambling

    [ad_1]

The 2024 NFL betting season is ready to kick off! And players living in legal jurisdictions have many special offers and promotions to choose from, depending on what they value most! Plus, the Tropicana Las Vegas has officially set an implosion date!

Hello friends, I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend, but the question on everyone’s mind is: Are you ready for some football? Well, what about some NFL betting? We’ve got promotion and special offer information from DraftKings to FanDuel to Caesars and beyond! But first, if you haven’t heard the Tropicana has finally and officially set an implosion date: October 9th at 2:30 in the morning. Of course the implosion party… yes, there’s going to be a party… will begin the night before on the evening of October 8th. Yes, ahead of all the implosion fireworks there will be… well, actual firework. And a ceremony and a drone show before they blow up what’s left of the Tropicana. And while 2:30 in the morning is a little late, even by Vegas standards, look at it this way: It should be a little easier to get a cab afterwards.

But before any of that happens, the NFL season will kick off this week with special offers for those players lucky enough to live in a state where it’s legal to bet… and we begin with two of the biggest names in American sports betting. First, FanDuel is offering new players $200 in bonus bet and a 3-week free trial of NFL Sunday Ticket. Plus, their “Hunches” campaign where players bet based on intuition. Meanwhile, DraftKings is offering new players $250 in bonus bets, along with a one-month free trial of NFL+.

Of course, several other popular US sports books are offering even bigger bonuses for NFL betting, some of them up to $1,500! So let’s talk about Fanatics, they have up to $1,000 in bonus bets
during the first week of the NFL season, with more ways to earn their FanCash rewards. Additionally, Caesars is offering their $1,000 “Rebet” promotion. So if you lose your first bet, they will give you your wager amount back in a bonus worth up to $1,000. Not to be outdone, ESPN bet is running almost the same offer on on their site… they will give you back up to $1,000. And BetMGM is giving back up to $1500 bucks in bonus bets to players who lose their first wager. Terms and conditions apply for all these offers.

Rounding out our list of NFL betting promotional offers for the NFL kickoff we come to Circa Sports, who have two contests running for the entire football season! First it’s the Circa Millions, where players make weekly picks against the spread with $6 million in guaranteed prizes… and the Circa Survivor, a winner take all contest where players try to choose a different winning team each week,
with the last player left winning $10 million! Registration for these contests ends on September 7th, and you must register at a Circa location in Nevada. Now, for you players out there who love you some prop bets, our friends at Casino City have published a list of some of the best, including advice and odds on win totals, division titles, who makes the playoffs, league MVP, the Super Bowl and more!

And finally this week, our friends at BetMGM are helping to kick off the NFL betting season with a special live dealer blackjack tournament, complete with former NFL stars… and you’re invited to attend, provided you live in a certain location. Kickoff with the Stars will take place Thursday September 5th at BetMGM Casino in New Jersey. And if you’re a little upset because you don’t live in New Jersey, and therefore can’t participate, remember this: You don’t live in New Jersey! And that’s a win all by itself! New York Jets legends Wayne Chrebet and Tony Richardson will participate in the live event and engage with fans online. No word on if they’re actually going to play blackjack, but if they do, I think we all know the outcome:  Dealers 21, Jets 17!

These updates are designed to simplify the sports betting process and expand the options available to bettors. And at the heart of these improvements are exclusive markets driven by Entain’s advanced betting modeling. That new play-by-play simulation-based pricing models, which were first introduced during the 2024 baseball season, are now being utilized for BetMGM NFL betting. This includes a wider array of football betting markets than ever before, according to the company’s announcement.

  • Illegal Horseracing Operators Threaten Industry Integrity

Illegal Horseracing Operators Threaten Industry Integrity

    [ad_1]

The horseracing industry faces a significant challenge from unregulated illegal betting markets, which threaten the integrity of the sport while siphoning off billions of dollars in revenue. Perhaps the most notorious of those illegal operators is Citibet, an online platform that has become a significant concern for the Asian Racing Federation (ARF).

Black Market Entities Enjoy Specific Advantages

A recent report by Hong Kong-based media outlet South China Morning Post highlighted how Citibet operates mainly in southern China and is estimated to handle a gambling turnover of about $50 billion annually, rivaling legal betting markets. A recent report from the ARF’s anti-illegal betting task force revealed that Citibet’s operations were equal to roughly 25% of the legal turnover in Hong Kong horseracing.

Perhaps the most worrying aspect of Citibet’s operation is how it allows punters to bet on horses to lose, similar to legal exchange platforms. However, Citibet operates in complete secrecy, unlike these regulated offerings, refusing to share information with racing authorities. This lack of transparency creates a breeding ground for match-fixing and spot-fixing, compromising the sport’s integrity.

The reason behind this appeal of illegal operators like Citibet is that they can offer better returns to bettors since they do not have to bear the cost related to taxes and regulatory fees. Search practices undermine the financial stability of legal betting markets and deprive the sport of crucial funding that, among other things, guarantees horse welfare.

Setting Up an Illegal Bookmaker Is Easier than Ever

James Porteous, the HKJC’s senior due diligence & research manager, has been vocal in his criticism of illegal operators. According to Porteous, the proliferation of technology has made it easier than ever to become an illegal bookmaker. Aspiring operators can now access everything they need for just a few thousand dollars, enabling them to offer customers an experience not too dissimilar to high-profile regulated companies.

The illegals have zero regulatory overheads and zero concerns about reputational or ethical considerations about how they deploy technology to attract customers and boost their turnover.

James Porteous, HKJC’s senior due diligence & research manager

Making matters worse is the growing presence of cryptocurrency in the betting markets. The anonymity of cryptocurrency and the ease with which funds travel across borders have made it a favorite among illegal operators. While regulators can often contact traditional payment gateways and block payments to black-market businesses, crypto completely shuts down such measures.

As illegal operators like Citibet continue to expand their technology and reach, so too must the industry’s stakeholders increase their efforts in counteracting this growing menace, ensuring that the sport remains fair and preserving its financial health. Consumers must also take care to only engage with regulated offerings, which guarantee safety, accountability, and transparency.

US Open: Coco Gauff, Caroline Garcia and other tennis players say cyberbullying is still a problem

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK — Caroline Garcia, a U.S. Open semifinalist two years ago, drew attention Wednesday to the ever-present problem of cyberbullying in tennis, particularly by people who bet on matches, after her first-round loss at the Grand Slam tournament.

Other players echoed Garcia’s lament, including defending champion Coco Gauff, who said: “You could be having a good day, and then somebody will literally tell you, ‘Oh, go kill yourself.’ You’re, like, ‘OK, thanks.’”

Garcia, a 30-year-old from France who has been ranked as high as No. 4, was seeded 28th at Flushing Meadows but was eliminated by Renata Zarazúa 6-1, 6-4 on Tuesday. Zarazúa is ranked 92nd and is making her U.S. Open debut.

“Maybe you can think that it doesn’t hurt us. But it does. We are humans,” Garcia wrote on social media. “And sometimes, when we receive (these) messages, we are already emotionally destroyed after a tough loss. And they can be damaging. Many before me have raised the subject. And still, no progress has been made.”

Garcia offered examples of “just a few” of the hundreds of messages she said she was sent after losing recent matches, including one telling her she should consider suicide and another that read, “I hope your mom dies soon.”

“At the end of the day, I’m just a normal girl working really hard and trying my best, I have tools and have done work to protect myself from this hate. But still, this is not OK,” Garcia wrote. “It really worries me when I think about younger players coming up, that have to go through this. People that still haven’t yet developed fully as a human and that really might be affected by this hate.”

As other players have mentioned in the past, she talked about the issue of being attacked verbally by gamblers upset about losing money.

“Tournaments and the sport keeps partnering with betting companies, which keep attracting new people to unhealthy betting,” Garcia said. “The days of cigarette brands sponsoring sports are long gone. Yet, here we are promoting betting companies, which actively destroy the life of some people.”

This sort of harassment via social media is nothing new, of course, and it’s not new to tennis.

“You hear a lot of nasty things, and people talk about your appearance, your family’s appearance, and all these things,” Gauff said. “If you are already struggling with your own mental issues and, on top of that, you have people digging deeper, it is tough.”

As Frances Tiafoe, a semifinalist in New York in 2022, said: “People are saying outlandish … stuff. It’s just wild.”

“I try not to look at the comments,” 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu said, mentioning that she will ask her PR person to scroll through and let her know when there are positive ones. “Because there’s always going to be a negative comment and I’ve learned that the hard way.”

Players have called it out in the past, and Grand Slam tournaments have been trying to help prevent messages from reaching the athletes.

The French Open partnered in 2022 with a company that uses artificial intelligence to filter players’ social media accounts, and the groups that run the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, the women’s tour and the lower-level ITF Tour announced in December they were starting a service to monitor for “abusive and threatening content” on X, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and TikTok.

“Many before me have raised the subject,” Garcia said. “And still, no progress has been made. Social media platforms don’t prevent it, despite AI being in a very advanced position.”

She closed her message by addressing anyone reading it, suggesting that “next time you see a post from an athlete, singer or any other person, that has failed or lost, you will remember that she or he is also a human being, trying his best in life. Be kind. Give love. Enjoy life.”

Which Legal Industry Is Bigger Marijuana Or Sports Betting

    [ad_1]

They are considered vice industries – but the mainstream public love them. But which is bigger?

Vice industries have always made lots of money. Alcohol, porn, gambling, marijuana and tobacco. Alcohol is a fully legal and is an over $300 billion industry in the US and Canada. Pornhub, the top site in the category, always ranks high in search – usually in the top 10.  But two are new to the mainstream market, so which legal industry is better marijuana or sports betting?

RELATED: The Simpsons Predicted Legal Weed So What’s Next

Sin City is has a big hand in both industries. Gambling, which is different than sports betting, is the backbone of the Las Vegas….but sports betting and marijuana have made big marks. The Westgate is home of Superbook, the the largest sportsbook in the world. With their famed video wall, you can watch, bet and enjoy a fully stocked bar, cocktail service, and plenty of food options.  It is also home to marijuana Planet 13. It is the world’s largest cannabis dispensary, a 115,000-square-foot entertainment complex with dining, a bar, shops, light-sabre-battling robots and an immersive glass-fronted production facility. Soon Cannabition, an interactive, immersive environment will be open as part of the complex.

Sports betting emerged after the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court verdict finding the federal government’s Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) to be unconstitutional. Until then, the law mandated states could not “sponsor, operate, advertise, promote, license, or authorize by law or compact” sports betting. Now the market for such activity is starting to open up.

When Indiana first opened sports betting, the site saw state saw nearly $440 million in wagers, according to the Indiana Gaming Commission. And all of this cash was generated, too, without making much change to the current infrastructure. The state and business owners are making money.

In 1996, California became the first state legalize medical marijuana legislation with the Compassionate Use Act. Colorado became the first state to legalize recreational marijuana in 2014. In 2018, Canada went legal. Now over 50% of the US population has access to legal marijuana and states with fully legal weed release more revenue from cannabis than alcohol. It has become so popular, it is cutting into the beer industry.

So who is better in the growing industries?  Marijuana was a $30 billion industry in 2023. While the same year, Americans wagered a record $119.84 billion on sports betting which translated into $10.92 billion in revenue. So the cannabis industry is currently bigger.  Want to bet if it stays the same or changes?

Even though he did not have a single reception in the New York Giants’ preseason opener on Thursday night, rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers is going to see a lot of the football in 2024 as long as he can stay on the field.

That notion hit a potential roadblock on Sunday when the 21-year-old limped off the field during practice after suffering what appeared to be a foot injury. After making another brilliant catch down the sideline, Nabers was seen taking off his shoe and touching at the top of his left foot before exiting.

An immediate update was not made available, though there appeared to be little concern from the team, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.

The LSU product, picked No. 6 overall at the 2024 NFL Draft, has shown in the opening weeks of training camp that he is capable of developing into an explosive No. 1 option within a new-look Giants offense that is starving for a game-changing playmaker — especially with Saquon Barkley gone.

He torched the Detroit Lions during joint practices last week, catching 17 of 18 passes thrown his way while appearing to be Daniel Jones’ primary target within a wide-receiving corps that also includes young talents such as Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt.

  • Popular Hockey Broadcaster Pulled Off Air for Alleged Betting Violations

Popular Hockey Broadcaster Pulled Off Air for Alleged Betting Violations

    [ad_1]

Jeff Marek has become one of hockey’s most loved and universally respected voices, gaining a substantial following thanks to his enthusiasm, good humor, and impressive insights. From what had started as an entry-level radio station gig, he went on to carve his career path. He became one of Sportsnet’s signature talents, hosting “The Jeff Marek Show” for the past 13 years.

Marek’s Departure Came as a Shock to Many

To the surprise of his followers, draft night on 28 June 2024 was Marek’s last night working for Sportsnet. Then, after he failed to turn up for the post-draft version of the hockey podcast “32 Thoughts,” which he co-hosts with Elliotte Friedman, many started to raise eyebrows. A week later, Marek called in sick for the last two programs of his daily radio show as they headed into summer break.

At the time, that didn’t draw nearly as much attention. However, Marek’s social media silence didn’t go unnoticed for long, as fans quickly noted something was awry. In July, Sportsnet quietly parted ways with Marek. On 26 July, Marek confirmed the news via his X (Twitter) profile, adding he would post additional updates.

After 13 great years at Sportsnet, I’m moving on. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m thankful to have worked alongside so many great people and played a role in bringing sports and hockey news to fans across Canada and the world. More to come soon.

    Jeff Marek

While this announcement placated some fans, it raised additional questions. High-profile departures like this usually warrant an official statement. Many speculated that Sportsnet’s conspicuous silence on this matter could indicate that its relations with Marek had soured for some reason. However, there is little concrete evidence to explain such a sudden fallout.

    Little Official Information Is Available

One of the more plausible explanations for Marek’s departure would be an alleged breach of NHL betting rules. According to a recent investigation by The Athletic, the commentator drew the League’s ire after coming under suspicion for allegedly helping a friend win wagers by revealing what players teams were drafting before the information was publicly available.

Sources close to the case reportedly revealed that the NHL notified the Nevada Gaming Control Board of its concerns about the matter and that the Board had opened an investigation. The authority refused to comment on this matter, but if found guilty, Marek could face significant punishments, which could damage his career.

As a law enforcement and regulatory agency, the Nevada Gaming Control Board does not comment on whether it is, or isn’t, investigating particular persons or entities.

    Nevada Gaming Control Board

Marek’s departure marks a substantial shift in the hockey broadcasting landscape, leaving fans and colleagues alike shocked and dismayed. The hockey community will keenly feel this situation as they await further developments on this surprising situation. Hopefully, the media star will be able to refute the allegations.
