  • Note left at renter’s door by stranger reveals chilling secret from 1980s

A California man received a mysterious handwritten note on his front door earlier this year—and it’s giving people online chills.

Jacob, who lives near Long Beach, said the note appeared on his door on June 18, left by an elderly man who claimed to have once lived in the same house in the 1980s. The message, written on lined notebook paper and said: “Hello, My name is [redacted]. In the early ’80s, I lived here. Something strange happened in the back bedroom. I was wondering if it still happens. I think it was a ghost.”

The unusual letter continued with the man’s contact details, inviting Jacob to call him “if it still comes.”

Jacob said in the post that the note “gave me the spooks for a couple days,” though he explained that nothing out of the ordinary has happened since he moved in.

“I’ve lived here about two years. No strange or paranormal activity—yet, at least,” Jacob told Newsweek.

    Viral Reaction

Months later, Jacob decided to share the eerie encounter on Reddit after discovering the r/Weird subreddit. Just in time for Halloween.

“[I] just thought it was strange but didn’t post it online until I found the r/weird subreddit and thought it could be fitting,” he said.

His post quickly went viral, gaining over 26,000 upvotes and thousands of comments from amused, and occasionally sympathetic, Reddit users.

In the comments, people shared their reactions. “Poor dude has been wondering for decades if that place is as haunted as he remembers. I’d call him up and let him know the presence seems to have moved on, just to give him some peace of mind,” user Platitude_Platypus said.

While UrsusRenata joked: “Ooo, I found a new retirement hobby!”

“The letter was pretty decent and he didn’t do anything creepy, so I would call and tell him that nothing is happening, at least to get it out of his mind,” 1saylor1 said.

Despite its eerie premise, Jacob said the response from strangers has been heartwarming rather than frightening.

“The reaction to the post is awesome,” he said. “Several people have reached out to me believing that the man could be a long lost family member.”

This is not the first time a mysterious note has left a homeowner shocked. Earlier this year, a Gen Z woman found a note outside her home from a “secret admirer” that left her scared to leave the house

While another strange note left in a mailbox in a small town left a family feeling both concerned and a little worried.

  • 3 Signs You Should Read Julie Berry’s If Looks Could Kill

September’s in full swing, which brings us ever closer to the spooky season! THP’s book team have had a solid mix of paranormal and Gothic fantasies this month. All with some romance included, of course. But before we introduce our next book review, we want to set the scene.

It’s 19th-century Manhattan and London. There’s a killer on the loose. And his hunter? A vengeful, newly awakened Medusa. With multiple perspectives and a thrilling timeline, Julie Berry’s If Looks Could Kill is an incredible and unique read.

We thoroughly enjoyed Julie Berry’s new novel, and we’re hoping you’re interested in reading it, too. Here are three signs to know if If Looks Could Kill is a good fit for your TBR!

If Looks Could Kill by Julie Berry

Book Overview: If Looks Could Kill

Content warnings: serial murder, death, violence, gore, bodies, sex trafficking, mentions of rape and sexual assault, alcohol use, forced captivity, guns, weapons, serious injury (Please read at your discretion!)

Summary: It’s autumn 1888, and Jack the Ripper is on the run. As London police close in, he flees England for New York City seeking new victims. But a primal force of female vengeance has had enough. With serpents for hair and a fearsome gaze, an awakened Medusa is hunting for one thing: Jack.

And other dangers lurk in Manhattan’s Bowery. Salvation Army volunteers Tabitha and Pearl discover that a girl they once helped has been forced to work in a local brothel. Tabitha’s an upstate city girl with a wry humor and a thirst for adventure, while farmgirl Pearl takes everything with stone-cold seriousness. Their brittle partnership is tested as they team up with an aspiring girl reporter and a handsome Irish bartender to mount a rescue effort, only to find their fates entwine with Medusa’s and Jack’s.

    You’re A True Crime Fan

If you love true crime documentaries and podcasts, then we’ll take that as a sign that you’ll enjoy If Looks Could Kill. The infamous story of serial killer Jack the Ripper continues to be prominent in today’s media. (Do we dare say he was the blueprint?) And in this thriller, he meets his match against Medusa. We love how this story pits these two historical figures together into one timeline. It couldn’t be clearer that the author did her due diligence in creating the lore and thoroughly researching each facet of it.

    You Love Feminist Revenge Tales

We recognize the ancient myth of Medusa as a story of female rage, revenge, and empowerment. In If Looks Could Kill, there isn’t only one Medusa. Any woman with a dark past or traumatic experience dealing with men can develop the powers to turn them into stone. As long as the men are capable of feeling enough guilt and shame for their heinous acts against women. The Medusa’s are ruthless, and rightfully so. But they’re also fiercely loyal and protective of their sisters, turning their rage into something lethal.

    You Enjoy A Romance Subplot

Amid the dark and heavy themes within If Looks Could Kill, we get a taste of romance between Tabitha, a Salvation Army volunteer, and Mike, a handsome Irish bartender. Their sweet courtship had us grinning ear to ear, especially seeing Tabitha meet Mike’s family. The two of them get into plenty of sticky situations dealing with thugs from a local brothel to the police to Medusa. But their romance gave us some relief in between Jack and Pearl’s perspectives. They absolutely deserved their happy ending.

With a deadly matchup between the infamous Jack the Ripper and a newly awakened Medusa, If Looks Could Kill by Julie Berry is a historical thriller that instantly reels you in!

If Looks Could Kill by Julie Berry comes out September 16th, and you can order a copy of it here!

  • Step Into The House Of Quiet By Kiersten White If You Dare

It’s no secret that we at THP love a good Gothic fantasy. And with Halloween in our sights, our reading list is only going to get spookier from here. Kiersten White’s new novel, The House of Quiet, fits the creepy, haunted house vibe we know you’ve been needing.

The House of Quiet follows Birdie, a maid who infiltrates the House of Quiet in search of her sister. Rumor has it that the House of Quiet is where children go to be treated for having terrible, supernatural powers. But who knows where they go afterward?

It’s eerie, atmospheric, and an edge-of-your-seat Gothic fantasy. Here are three of our favorite things about The House of Quiet by Kiersten White!

The House of Quiet by Kiersten White

Book Overview: The House Of Quiet

Content warnings: death, gore, violence, attempted murder, stabbing, bodies, forced captivity, serious injury

Summary: In the middle of a deadly bog sits the House of Quiet. It’s a place for children whose Procedure triggered powers too terrible to be lived with—their last hope for treatment. No one knows how they’re healed or where they go afterward.

Birdie has begged, bargained, and blackmailed her way inside as a maid, determined to find her missing sister, Magpie. But what she discovers is more mysteries. Instead of the destitute children who undergo the Procedure in hopes of social advancement, the house brims with aristocratic teens wielding strange powers they never should have been burdened with.

Though Birdie wants to ignore them, she can’t help being drawn to stoic and silent Forest, charmed by clever River, and concerned for the youngest residents. And with fellow maid Minnow keeping tabs on everything Birdie does, danger is everywhere.

In her desperate search for Magpie, Birdie unearths terrifying threats and devastating truths, forcing her to confront just how much she’s willing to sacrifice to save her own sister. Because in the House of Quiet, if you find what’s lurking beneath . . . you lose everything.

Unravel the mystery. Ignite the rebellion.

    Every Character Has A Role

It may seem that some of the characters have too many screws loose to play a significant part in the plot. Or that they’re spoiled rich kids who shouldn’t complain about their situation. But no character goes wasted in The House of Quiet. From characters who take an early exit like Sky and Rabbit to the ones who never seem to be in their right mind like Nimbus and Lake, everyone pulls their weight in helping Birdie uncover the secrets of the House of Quiet.

    Birdie And Forest

Even amidst the unknown horrors and unsettling energy in The House of Quiet, there is still room for some romance! We especially love the progression between Birdie and Forest. Forest usually keeps to himself and doesn’t utter a single word, the reason for which Birdie will later find out. Luckily, Birdie talks enough for the both of them while also sitting peacefully in each other’s company. Forest fiercely protects her from harm, and we also learn about their deeper history.

    The Ultimate Revenge

Another one of our favorite things about The House of Quiet is the extremely justified, revenge-filled ending. Once Birdie and the rest of the residents find the heart of the house, the sinister plot all starts coming together. Why do rich families really send their children to the House of Quiet? What happens to all the residents after receiving the so-called treatment? All the adults who have kept this house running get their karma returned to them in the end.

An atmospheric, eerie, and edge-of-your-seat Gothic fantasy, Kiersten White’s The House of Quiet deserves to be your next spooky read!

The House of Quiet by Kiersten White comes out September 9th, and you can order a copy of it here!

  • 10 Pokemon Who Are Much Scarier Than They Look

10 Pokemon Who Are Much Scarier Than They Look

Pokemon are often rather interesting little creatures with various Pokedex entries to offer extra insights into a their quirks, lore, and abilities.

It may come as a surprise, but many cute and cuddly looking ‘Mons have much darker or more dangerous Pokedex entries than you’d have ever imagined, and we’ve caught ten of ’em!

    Mawile

Mawile may look like a nice little friend, with a face that screams cute and harmless. Don’t let this fool you though; Mawile has a set of giant, Venus flytrap-shaped steel jaws in the style of a ponytail, making it very dangerous. Mawile also uses its docile face to its advantage, luring people in and fooling them into letting down their guard before using these jaws to strike with devastating force.

Pet cats get a bad rep for dishing out some pretty brutal bites and scratches when provoked, but I’m sure that would be absolutely nothing in comparison to an angry pet Mawile. Yikes!

    Stufful

    Stufful in the Pokemon anime

Stufful looks like a cross between a red panda and an adorable little teddy bear, which gives it an overwhelmingly lovable appearance. However, Trainers Bewear; this Pokemon is not one you should make an effort to cuddle!

Despite Stufful having an adorable (and rather harmless) appearance, this Fighting Type ‘Mon’s Pokedex entry states that when it gets angry or is touched by anyone other than a trusted friend, it flails its arms and legs around with enough force to snap tree trunks clean in half. Just imagine if your limbs got in the way of one of Stufful’s temper tantrums…yeah, it’s a no from me.

    Shuppet

    Shuppet in the Pokemon anime

Sure, Shuppet may be a spooky little Ghost Type, but it’s not all that scary by appearance. It just looks like a friendly little puppet, the Casper of the Pokemon world, if you will. However, just as many others on this list Shuppet isn’t as sweet and harmless as it seems on the surface. In fact, this little ghostie is attracted to feelings of vengeance and jealousy, meaning it’s naturally drawn to negative, vindictive people.

In true paranormal entity fashion, Shuppet feeds on the negative emotions of other Pokemon and Trainers, which it converts into power. If you see a horde of Shuppets gathering around one place, then it’s a major red flag; either someone or something in the area is attracting these ‘Mons with overwhelming negative energy, so I wouldn’t stick around for too long!

    Drifloon

    Drifloon in the Pokemon anime

Drifloon may look like a silly little balloon pal, but unfortunately, the nature of this Pokemon is much more sinister. Despite having quite a cute appearance, Drifloon has been noted in its Pokedex entries to tug on the hands of children, attempting to steal them away to the afterlife. Hide your kids, everyone!

No, seriously, that’s horrifying information, especially because young children are generally drawn to bright and colorful objects such as balloons. Thankfully, because Drifloon is relatively small, it usually finds itself being tugged around rather than kidnapping youngsters as it intends. Still, I’d hate to know how many victims the Drifloon species collectively has stacked up. Oh, and to keep things spooky, if Drifloon’s balloon-like body bursts, its soul will spill out with a horrifying scream — never would have I assumed that a balloon could be such nightmare fuel.

    Absol

    Absol in the Pokemon anime

Absol may look like just another cute fox/cat/dog-like creature to any unassuming Trainer, but there is a rather tragic and frightening story told through the ‘Dex entries of this poor Dark Type. Absol’s horn has the unique power to sense and foretell natural disasters, with a devastating event occurring each time Absol makes an appearance in a certain location. Because of this, Absol earned itself the title of ‘the Disaster Pokemon’, and was witch-hunted, causing it to flee deep into the mountains.

Absol still returns from its home terrain to warn people of natural disasters that are to come. It’s not exactly Absol itself that is so frightening, but more the feeling of impending doom that can be stirred by catching a glimpse of one out of habitat — I can’t imagine the gnawing dread of knowing something big and dangerous is about to be stirred up by nature.

    Froslass

    Frosslass in the Pokemon anime

Froslass may look like just an average Ice Type Pokemon, or perhaps more elegant and alluring than others if anything. However, Froslass says otherwise, with this Pokemon being much more intimidating than what you may assume at first glance. You see, Froslass’ background involves a woman who met her end on a snowy mountain, with this ‘Mon being created from the will of her regrets at passing.

Froslass is said to relish on the souls of men and is known for targeting hikers on snowy mountains. Froslass prefers to freeze its prey, before bringing it back to its den, where it will line them up in an orderly fashion. There are also ancient legends about Froslass placing curses on men, as mentioned in Pokemon Legends: Areceus, so all around this ‘Mon is more of a hazard than anything. Froslass is the soulless ice queen of the Pokemon world, that’s for sure.

    Zorua

It’s a pretty well-known fact that the little Dark Type fox Pokemon, Zorua, is a huge trickster, known for shapeshifting into other Pokemon. However, Zorua’s Pokedex entries state that it also commonly transforms itself into a silent child to blend in among humans and steal food.

However, Zorua’s ‘Dex entry in Ultra Moon takes things a step into more ominous territory. This entry states that if a normally talkative child stops talking, it’s likely been replaced with Zorua. Um…excuse me? What happens to the real child? Do I even want to know? Does Zorua harm them and then steal their identity? Are they smuggled away with the rest of Zorua’s stolen goods? Or are there simply just two clones of the same kid walking about? Either way, the situation would be incredibly mysterious and downright creepy to consider.

    Espurr

Espurr has a cute little face, but this Psychic type is a lot more intimidating than it seems. Espurr may for the most part have a rather blank and neutral expression, however within its mind is an immense struggle to control its devastating force.

Espurr wields psychic powers, however, it lacks control over these abilities, which can make this ‘Mon wildly dangerous and unpredictable. To avoid these circumstances, Espurr usually keeps its ears folded down, but when they are up, this little fluffball is capable of blasting everything within 300 feet of itself. Now that’s some seriously freaky power! I wouldn’t want to get this little guy angry, it’s giving me slight Carrie vibes.

    Hatterene

Haterrene has rather soft colors and seemingly delicate features that make it rather admirable, but this Pokemon is capable of absolutely brutal things. Hatterene hates loud noises, and if someone were to be too loud around this Psychic/Fairy Dual-Type, then they’d risk being torn apart by the claws on its tentacle, which sounds rather gruesome. This Pokemon takes being an introvert to the next level.

Haterrene has made a name for itself as the Forest Witch, which makes this Pokemon significantly spookier. In Pokemon Violet, Haterenne’s ‘Dex entry states that Trainers should beware of forests that show no signs of living creatures, as this may be Haterenne’s territory. Keeping this in mind, it seems that the creature is some sort of pastel Blair Witch when it comes to the Pokemon World.

    Sneasel

Sneasels are notorious for having an extremely vicious nature, which can be a deadly force when paired with their sharp, blade-like claws. Though it’s an intriguing and mysterious Pokemon, Sneasel is quite terrifying, known to hide in darkness and wait to strike its prey. What even is this little guy, some mini Jack the Ripper?

Sneasel is also frequently known for driving wild Pidgey away from their homes through sheer violence, feasting on the eggs that are left behind. In other words, Sneasel chases families of bird Pokemon from their nest and consumes their unborn children for a fun little snack — talk about brutal!
