  • Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Update Reveals Big Change to Marvel Movie

    Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is making a big change from the first two Spider-Verse movies.

    Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the upcoming animated Marvel superhero movie directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson. Serving as a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the movie currently has a 2027 release date from Sony Pictures.

    What is the update on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse?

    Not too much has been revealed about Sony Pictures Animation‘s third Spider-Man at this point in time; however, a recent update reveals that this movie will be making a big change from the first two.

    Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony’s Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville said that, for the first time in the franchise, they’ve brought a live-action DP, Alice Brooks, to direct the camera in a way the franchise hasn’t done before.

    Belson said when asked if working on Beyond the Spider-Verse was as “straining” for animators as the reported work conditions of Across the Spider-Verse, “Nobody has to work on a show they don’t want to work on. Even though you’ll hear — whether it’s Spider-Verse or other shows — that people go through these really difficult crunch times, everybody wants to be on the most ambitious and most exciting shows.”

    De Froberville added, “We made some changes to the pipeline to, not avoid — because Chris and Phil are always going to iterate late — but to lessen the amount of iteration on the back end. We brought on a live-action DP, Alice Brooks. She’s been directing camera in a way that we hadn’t done on Spider-Verse before. We’re in animation on Spider-Verse now. Because the directors and Chris and Phil have a chance to iterate so much early on while we’re in story, and truly visualize what it’s going look like by the time those sequences flow into the Imageworks pipeline, there’s way less changes.”

    Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently expected to be released on June 18, 2027, in the United States.

    The Cinema Audio Society Awards took place on Saturday, honoring Oppenheimer, The Last of Us and The Bear with winning trophies this year.

    The sound mixing team behind Oppenheimer took home the award in the live-action competition, beating the teams behind Barbie, Ferrari, Killers of the Flower Moon and Maestro.

    Cinema Audio Society, which honors outstanding sound mixing in film and television, also handed out awards in the television categories to The Last of Us for best one-hour series and The Bear for best half-hour series.

    In its animated feature competition, CAS awarded the trophy to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Other nominees included the teams behind Elemental, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, The Boy and the Heron and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. As for feature documentaries, 32 Sounds took home the award, beating out American Symphony, Little Richard: I Am Everything, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.

    Several mixers earned multiple nominations, including Kevin O’Connell (Barbie, Oppenheimer), Doc Kane (Mutant Mayhem, Super Mario Bros.) Mark Mangini (Mutant Mayhem, 32 Sounds) and Michael Semanick (Across the Spider-Verse, Mutant Mayhem).

    Television category contenders included The Crown, The Last of Us, Succession, Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

    Will the Best Picture Race Have Two Animation Contenders?

    In 2002, the Academy Awards first honored animated features with their own Oscar category — the inaugural winner was DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek. Before then, the stance on rewarding animated features was that there were too few to warrant a separate category; honorary Oscars were given to groundbreaking films like the animated/live-action hybrid Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the computer-animated Toy Story.

    But with the founding of DreamWorks — and the expansion of other studios, such as stop-motion houses Aardman and Laika, the Irish outfit Cartoon Saloon, and animation departments within Sony and Netflix — there arose an abundance of animated titles that could compete with the output of cartoon titans Disney and Pixar.

    While those two studios have led the pack with the most nominees and winners since the category’s debut two decades ago (Pixar with 11 wins, Disney Animation with four), it’s still a rarity for an animated feature to find recognition outside the category, particularly best picture. This year, however, one — or even two! — animated contenders could claim a spot among the 10 best picture nominees. 

    Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the sequel to the 2019 winner for animated feature, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which claimed the studio’s first win in the category and was the second film featuring a Marvel character to win an Oscar. (That Spider-Man iteration is not, technically, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but its Oscar win came the same year as Black Panther’s three for original score, costume design and production design.) The film was released to critical acclaim and commercial success, with a 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a global box office total of $690 million. 

    Beyond its stellar reviews, Across the Spider-Verse — co-directed by Kemp Powers, who co-wrote Disney/Pixar’s Oscar-nominated Soul — has earned plenty of year-end accolades, including its placement on AFI’s list of the year’s top 10 films (alongside such live-action contenders as Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer). Following a precedent set by best picture nominee Toy Story 3 in 2011, it’s also an entry in a beloved, Oscar-winning franchise and boasts a cast of A-listers (Oscar nominees Brian Tyree Henry and Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar hopeful Greta Lee and Oscar winners Mahershala Ali and Daniel Kaluuya) and dazzling sequences.

    However, GKIDS’ The Boy and the Heron could be Across the Spider-Verse’s biggest competition in both categories. Written and directed by anime master Hayao Miyazaki, the three-time Academy Award nominee who won the second animated feature Oscar for Spirited Away in 2003, the film topped the North American box office with its $12.8 million debut over the weekend of Dec. 9-10 — besting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé and Disney’s fall animated title Wish. 

    Its box office performance proves the brand power of Japan’s Studio Ghibli as well as the devotion of Miyazaki’s fan base; the movie brought the 82-year-old animator out of retirement for what he says is his final film, and audiences welcomed him back in droves. The Academy has a final chance to celebrate the animation auteur with another Oscar — or a history-making best picture nomination.

    June not only brought respite from the scorching summer but also bestowed upon us a deluge of surprises in the form of recent Hollywood movies. These films captivated audiences, generating a whirlwind of excitement and becoming viral sensations on social media with each passing day.

    Here are some of the Hollywood films that were trending and created a lot of buzz amongst the audience.

    Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

    Miles Morales is back as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. The film continues from the events of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, now alone Miles misses Gwen Stacy and when she comes to visit him, he sneakingly travels to another multiverse adventure. In this adventure, he meets Spider-People known as the Spider-Society, led by Miguel O’Hara or Spider-Man 2099, but comes into conflict with them over handling a new threat in the form of the Spot.

    The film became popular due to its amazing animation sequences which looked like the comics and also its addition of multiple Spidermen from all possible ways such as the Indian Spider-Man aka Pavitr Prabhakar and Hobie aka Spider-Punk.

    Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

    Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the seventh instalment in the Transformers franchise, carries forward the saga. Acting as both a sequel to Bumblebee and a prequel to the original film, the story unfolds in Brooklyn during the year 1994. The film revolves around Noah Diaz, a former military electronics expert, and Elena Wallace, as they find themselves entangled in a conflict among the Maximals, Terrorcons, and Predacons. Joining forces with the Autobots and Optimus Prime, they unite to protect Earth from impending danger.

    The Flash

    Cast: Ezra Miller, Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, Michael Keaton.

    After numerous setbacks and controversies, including those involving Ezra Miller, The Flash, the highly anticipated entry in the DCEU, was finally released in the theatres. The movie chronicles Barry Allen’s journey through time as he endeavours to prevent his mother’s tragic fate. This daring endeavour inevitably sets off a chain of events, entangling not just one but two iterations of Batman – portrayed by Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck – as well as Supergirl, in a thrilling and chaotic tale.

    The film became buzzworthy due to fans eager for a ‘Flash’ film as well as the compelling storytelling, action sequences and amazing visual effects.

    Elemental

    Director: Peter Sohn
    Cast: Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Catherine O’Hara.

    Under the direction of Peter Sohn, Elemental shines a spotlight on the fundamental forces of fire, land, water, and air. Set in the vibrant Element City, the film delves into the unexpected convergence of Ember Lumen, a spirited woman embodying fire, and Wade Ripple, a fellow crafted from water. Ember takes a daring leap outside her comfort zone as she embarks on an exploration of uncharted territories.

    The film became a trend due to Pixar finally releasing a new animation film with original storytelling.

    Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

    Director: James Mangold
    Cast:  Harrison Ford, John Rhys-Davies, Karen Allen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.

    Directed by James Mangold, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny marks the return of Harrison Ford as the iconic Indiana Jones. In this thrilling instalment, Indiana Jones teams up with his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, as they embark on a crucial quest to recover a legendary dial. Their mission becomes all the more urgent as they race against time to prevent Jurgen Voller, a former Nazi, from acquiring the powerful artefact.

    The film became a buzz-worthy topic as it marks the last instalment of the epic movies Indian Jones.

    As the summer season shines onto the box office, movie grosses don’t match what they used to be in seasons past.

    This June weekend witnessed a rare anomaly: no film surpassed the $20 million milestone, leaving the box office longing for its usual mid-year fireworks, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

    In a box office triumph that defied expectations, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”, swung back into the spotlight, triumphantly outpacing Pixar’s “Elemental”, securing the weekend’s coveted crown.

    Spidey soared to an estimated $19.3 million, propelling it past the $300 million milestone in the domestic box office. As Sunday drew to a close, the wall-crawler’s North American total stood tall at $317.1 million, while on a global scale, its web of success extended to a staggering $560.3 million.

    DC and Warner Bros.’ “The Flash” faced a formidable challenge as its second weekend unfolded. With a staggering 72 percent drop, it mustered only $15.3 million, resulting in a domestic total of $87.6 million.

    Unlike its counterpart, “Elemental”, “The Flash” encountered poor exit scores, and audiences seem to be overwhelmingly rejecting the film. Industry insiders reluctantly acknowledge that the Ezra Miller-led flick has missed the mark.

    “The Flash” also faced an uphill battle overseas, as its second weekend brought in a modest $26.6 million across 76 markets. With a foreign total of $123.3 million, the film’s global haul reached $210.9 million.

    As summer sizzles, the box office delivered an unexpected twist with both “The Flash” and “Elemental” falling short of their anticipated blockbuster status. The underperformance of these two tentpoles resulted in a 19 percent dip compared to last year and a staggering 47 percent decline from the booming 2019 market.

    “The Flash” managed to surpass the new entry “No Hard Feelings” narrowly, Sony’s comedy starring Jennifer Lawrence.

    “No Hard Feelings” debuted with a better-than-expected $15.1 million, signalling a promising start for a wave of raunchy, R-rated comedies gracing the summer landscape.

    Internationally, “No Hard Feelings” made an initial splash, collecting $9.5 million across 48 markets, resulting in a worldwide opening of $24.6 million.

    Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has generated huge interest since the trailer was released. Following the massive success of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in 2021, fans are eager to return to the Spider-Man universe. This movie holds particular significance for India as Pavitr Prabhakar, the Indian Spider-Man, will make his big-screen debut.

    The Hindi and Punjabi versions of the film will feature cricketer Shubman Gill’s voice, which will make Pavitr’s character even more special for Indian viewers.


    Known for his impressive batting skills, Gill has a significant following among cricket enthusiasts, and his appearance as Pavitr Prabhakar in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ is expected to win over cricket fans across India.

Since the movie will be debuting the Indian Spider-Man for the first time on screen, getting to be the voice of our Indian Spider-Man, Pavitr Prabhakar, in the Hindi and Punjabi languages was such a remarkable experience for me. Already, I feel superhuman. I am eagerly anticipating the release of this movie.”

    Gwen and Miles’ Relationship Seems To Still Be a Highlight in ‘Across the Spider-Verse’

    A new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse dropped and with it came a look into Miles’ (Shameik Moore) relationship with a whole new team of Spider people. And while it might not be the easiest working relationship with Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara, there is one thing that we’re gifted yet again with: Gwen and Miles.

    In the first movie, the two were in school together mainly because it is what Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) decided to do in order to figure out why she was brought to this universe in the first place. But it set up an easy connection for them and throughout the movie, we got to see the two interact with each other on a different level than Gwen with Peter or Miles with Peter. Their friendship was something that was born out of necessity but strong nonetheless.

    And the new trailer gives us just the briefest of moments between them, but it is enough to have me absolutely screaming at what Across the Spider-Verse could bring to them. Are they going to remain best friends? Are they going to be something more? Or is this a friendship based purely on shared trauma and understanding? These are all question I now have and need answered.

    A leap of faith

    It is a connection from the comics if you want to get technical. So Miles and Gwen falling in love in the Spider-Verse movies would not be outrageous. In fact, they were from different universes in the comics, too. His other love interest is an alternate version of Kate Bishop, which is doubly funny given that Hailee Steinfeld plays both the animated Gwen and the live-action Kate in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So maybe Miles Morales is just destined to fall in love with Hailee Steinfeld in some way, shape, or form.

    The thing is: This can be the start of their relationship. In the first movie, Gwen’s reasoning for them just being friends is because she’s a little older than him—not by much, less than a year, but that’s her excuse in the movie. The reality is they were leaving Miles’ universe to go back to their own, and it felt like a final goodbye for all our favorite Spidey friends. She leapt back into her home universe never to see that version of Miles Morales again.

    Or so we thought. The end of the movie had Gwen coming to see Miles yet again (and the trailer has her in a new sweater insteadm so can’t wait to see what that’s about).

    But the trailer gave us what I think is one of the prettiest shots of Gwen and Miles. It’s the two of them hanging upside down, looking at the city and it is a perfect look into why they work as two characters together. Just two Spider-people, relating to the struggling that the other has faced and understanding this experience in a way that no one else can.

    I’m sad I still have a little over six months left to wait until I get to be reunited with Miles and Gwen in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
