You can stop holding your breath for a Madame Web 2.
Or a Kraven the Hunter 2…
Or a Morbius 2…
Yet the Spider-Man extended universe isn’t dead, either.
Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman confirms the studio is planning a “fresh reboot” to the Spider-Man extended universe after the franchise’s string of box office disappointments (aside from the trio of Venom films, which performed well).
Rothman was asked by Matt Belloni on The Town podcast, “Where are we in the Spider-Man franchise? Not the animated Spider-Verse. Is the larger Spider-Verse dead?”
“No,” replied Rothman.
“Are you going to go back to those at some point?”
“Yes,” Rothman confirmed.
“But it’ll be a fresh reboot?”
“Yes.”
“New people?”
“Yes, yes.”
The executive added that “scarcity has value … you got to make the audience miss you.”
Rothman also, for the first time, confirmed a 2021 report that Spider-Man: No Way Home was banned in China due to the film’s climax taking place at the Statue of Liberty.
The executive pointed out the film made $1.9 billion globally, which “pisses me off to have to say this.”
“You say, ‘$1.9 billion, what’s wrong with [saying] 2?’ Well, it didn’t get into China, but in my mind [the film’s box office is] over 2 [billion] because I know what we would have done in China.”
“[The China Film Administration] just said, ‘Small thing, no problem, just cut out the Statue of Liberty’ — which is where the climax is. That was their request.”
Needless to say, Rothman did not change the film — which might have been impossible given the sheer amount of screen time that takes place at the iconic New York landmark.
“Also, I really didn’t look forward to sitting in front of Congress telling them why I cut the Statue of Liberty out at the request of the Chinese Communist Party,” he added.
Sony reportedly courted China heavily for Spider-Man: No Way Home, even releasing a Chinese poster amid hopes it would be the first Marvel Phase 4 film to clear censorship approvals. The prior film, Far From Home, made $200 million in China.
Rothman was also asked about his relationship with Marvel boss Kevin Feige, and opined, “They’re two people about whom I would say this — and maybe more if I think about it — but never bet against Jim Cameron and never bet against Kevin Feige.”
The live-action Spider-Man universe movies were plagued by both poor reviews and weak box office. Launched with 2018’s hit Venom, which set a high-water mark for the franchise with $856 million globally, the efforts included 2022’s Morbius ($162 million globally), 2024’s Madame Web ($100 million globally) and 2024’s Kraven the Hunter (an abysmal $60 million globally against an estimated production budget of more than $100 million).
What is the update on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse?
Not too much has been revealed about Sony Pictures Animation‘s third Spider-Man at this point in time; however, a recent update reveals that this movie will be making a big change from the first two.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony’s Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville said that, for the first time in the franchise, they’ve brought a live-action DP, Alice Brooks, to direct the camera in a way the franchise hasn’t done before.
Belson said when asked if working on Beyond the Spider-Verse was as “straining” for animators as the reported work conditions of Across the Spider-Verse, “Nobody has to work on a show they don’t want to work on. Even though you’ll hear — whether it’s Spider-Verse or other shows — that people go through these really difficult crunch times, everybody wants to be on the most ambitious and most exciting shows.”
De Froberville added, “We made some changes to the pipeline to, not avoid — because Chris and Phil are always going to iterate late — but to lessen the amount of iteration on the back end. We brought on a live-action DP, Alice Brooks. She’s been directing camera in a way that we hadn’t done on Spider-Verse before. We’re in animation on Spider-Verse now. Because the directors and Chris and Phil have a chance to iterate so much early on while we’re in story, and truly visualize what it’s going look like by the time those sequences flow into the Imageworks pipeline, there’s way less changes.”
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently expected to be released on June 18, 2027, in the United States.

There was a time when most blockbuster movies and popular television series found their way onto Netflix. Yet as the market for streaming grew, the amount of superhero movies on the service decreased. However, Netflix still hosts some of the best superhero movies ever made.
What are the best Superhero movies on Netflix as of January 2026?
Today, Netflix is more frequently associated with superhero streaming series than movies. They produced a number of mature series based on the world of Marvel Comics, like Daredevil. They also stream most of the Arrowverse shows based on DC Comics, thanks to a long-running licensing deal with The CW. Despite that, and most of these properties slowly making their way to Disney+ and HBO Max, there are still some fine superhero movies to be found on Netflix.
Hellboy (2004)
In 1944, a group of Nazi sorcerers led by the infamous Rasputin tried to summon several demons into their service. Thanks to the efforts of an Allied strike force and scholar Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm, they failed. However, an infant demon was discovered in the aftermath. Broom adopted this Hellboy as his own son, and trained him to become a force for good.
Six decades later, Broom and Hellboy are employed by the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. With their aid, the BPRD have become humanity’s first line of defense against various monsters and magicians. Unfortunately, Rasputin’s allies have resurrected him, and they are determined to finish what they have started.
There have been four films to date based upon Dark Horse Comics‘ superhero Hellboy and two cinematic reboots. Despite this, many feel that the first effort remains the best. This is largely due to the efforts of Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who scripted and directed the film. It is also thanks to Ron Perlman‘s masterful performance as the noble demon. It is also notable as the only Hellboy film adaptation to date to merit a sequel.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Peter Parker is a brilliant but socially awkward teenager with dreams of becoming a scientist. This leads him to seek out a former colleague of his father, Dr. Curt Connors, who is studying cross-species genetics. A lab accident leads to Peter being bitten by a genetically-altered spider and becoming something new… The Amazing Spider-Man.
When Connors is similarly transformed into a monstrous lizard man, Spider-Man must step up to save the city. This is made more difficult thanks to the efforts of NYPD Captain George Stacy, who thinks Spider-Man is more menace than superhero. This, in turn, endangers Peter’s romance with classmate Gwen Stacy, who just happens to be Captain Stacy’s daughter.
Marc Webb faced a serious challenge following after Sam Raimi in developing a new Spider-Man film franchise. It is debatable how well he succeeded. However, The Amazing Spider-Man does have a devout fandom for several reasons.
Many fans prefer Andrew Garfield‘s more wise-cracking take on Peter Parker than the more brooding variant played by Tobey Maguire. Another selling point for the movie is Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and her chemistry with Andrew Garfield. Such is her popularity that many hope she may still find her way into the MCU as Spider-Gwen.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Miles Morales was a smart student, struggling to fit in and live up to the standards of his NYPD officer father. Chance leads to his being bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining powers similar to those of the city’s greatest hero, Spider-Man. It also leads to Miles being entrusted with the only way to stop New York’s worst crime-boss from traveling between dimensions and wrecking reality after Spider-Man dies.
In over his head and untrained in his new powers, Miles doesn’t think it is in him to be a hero. Fate intervenes again, giving him an unlikely teacher in the form of another Peter Parker from another world. Unfortunately, this Spider-Man is not the superhero he once was. However, with more and more Spiders showing up, Peter will have to remember what comes with great power. And Miles will learn that anyone can wear the mask.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a revelation upon its release. Beyond being a blockbuster success, it was a critical smash. Even those critics who normally turn up their noses at superhero movies praised the film for its innovative concept and revolutionary animation. It ultimately earned 52 industry awards, including the Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Animated Feature Film.
The film opens with the standard origin of four baby turtles and a rat being mutated into humanoid creatures by mutagenic ooze. However, this group of turtle boys hide themselves from the world because of their foster father Splinter’s fear of humanity. Not because of some need to maintain a superhero secret identity. Despite this, his sons long to be a part of the world above their home in the sewer.
The existence of the Ninja Turtles is uncovered by aspiring teen journalist April O’Neil, after they recover her stolen moped. This leads to a partnership, as the TMNT help April investigate a series of crimes tied to the sinister TCRI. It also leads to the discovery of another found family of mutants, pressured into a life of crime by their charismatic leader, Superfly.
Mutant Mayhem was notable for being one of the few times the Ninja Turtles actually seemed to act like real teenagers. It was also marked by a unique visual aesthetic, and for how well it merged ideas taken from a wide scope of earlier adaptations. The end result was a reboot that won over a new generation of fans while satisfying the old guard.
KPop Demon Hunters (2025)
Long ago, demons preyed on humanity. Hither came three young women, warrior poets who mixed song and sorcery to fight the demons. They created the Honmoon; a mystic barrier that limited the power of demons on Earth. Through the centuries that followed, three women in a generation would be chosen as the new guardians of the Honmoon. Today, those guardians are Huntrix – a K-pop idol group consisting of rebellious Mira, innocent Zoey, and confident Rumi.
Huntrix are challenged in popularity by a demon-backed idol group called the Saja Boys. This leads to a battle of the bands for the souls of the world. However, Rumi has a secret; a half-demon heritage that threatens to break up the band and her friendships with Zoey and Mira.
Some may question the inclusion of KPop Demon Hunters on a list of superhero movies. Certainly it is more heavily influenced by Korean culture and mythology than traditional comic book heroics. Yet at its core, the movie is a magical girl story, with summoned weapons, colorful costumes, and secret identities. That makes it a superhero movie by most metrics, in terms of story if nothing else.
How we picked the best Superhero Movies on Netflix in 2026
As noted earlier, there is little in the way of superhero movies on Netflix in 2026. However, there were still enough titles to make narrowing the list down to a top-five difficult. To that end, these movies were assessed based upon their influence, awards won, and success in establishing an on-going franchise.
Another major comics convention means another series of announcements from big comics publishers. For New York Comic Con, Marvel spread out big news for major franchises like X-Men and Spider-Man over the past few days and kept affirming that no, really, the Ultimate Universe will end next year. Let’s take those one at a time, shall we?
First, the larger Marvel universe. During Saturday’s “Next Big Thing” panel, the publisher disclosed what’s coming after Doctor Doom’s reign of the planet ends in November. We already know some characters will fight for the title of Sorcerer Supreme, and the new miniseries Dungeons of Doom from Philip Kennedy Johnson, Ben Percy, Carlos Magno, Robert Gill, Justin Mason, and Georges Jeanty will explore what happens when various factions try to ransack the now unoccuppied Castle Doom for its power and technology. That doesn’t go as planned, and they all wind up in a dungeon labyrinth they now have to survive in. Expect it in January.
At that same panel, a new Iron Man solo book was revealed. The title comes from DC writer Joshua Willamson and artist Carmen Carnero, and sees Tony Stark take on a team of geniuses forced by Madame Masque into recreating his initial success at making an armored suit.
For Spider-Man heads, the big thing to know is that Peter Parker’s heading back to Earth soon, after which he’ll be in the Death Spiral event from Joe Kelly (Amazing Spider-Man), Al Ewing (Venom), Charles Soule (Eddie Brock: Carnage) and Jesús Saiz (Eddie). The tale sees Spider-Man team up with his two gooey frenemies to deal with a serial killer coming for superheroes and with a specific axe to grind against the webhead in particular. It’s launching in February, and that summer, there’ll be the Queen in Black event building on the recent return of Knull over in Venom’s neck of the woods and the villain’s own upcoming comic.
Next, the X-Men are currently going through the Age ofRevelation event set in the near future where Doug Ramsey (formerly Cypher, now Revelation) has created a mutant utopia that’s doomed the rest of the world. Once that concludes at the end of 2025, the regular X-books like X-Men, Uncanny and Exceptional X-Men, and Wolverine will continue again under the new Shadows of Tomorrow banner, which is also bringing in some new books.
Solo-wise, Cyclops and Rogue will get limited miniseries from Alex Paknadel and Roge Antonio and Erica Schultz and Luigi Zagaria, respectively. Plot details for Cyke’s book are under wraps, but Rogue’s will see her confront her past as a villain when it comes to “slam [her] right in the face,” and Destiny and Mystique will play a part in the story. Rogue #1 will launch in January, and Cyclops #1 in February. For Magik fans, writer Ashley Allen and artist German Peralta are returning for new story starring Illyana Rasputin and her brother Colossus in the five-issue Magik & Colossus miniseries also launching in February. The big new team book is January’s Inglorious X-Force from Tim Seeley and Michael Sta. Maria, which stars Cable, Hellverine, Boom-Boom, and Archangel.
Deadpool, Storm, and Laura “Wolverine” Kinney’s books will continue, just with some slightly new creative teams and titles. Wade Wilson: Deadpool from Ben Percy and Geoff Shaw has Wade take on new clients and a “troubling path”; Storm: Earth’s Mightiest Mutant from returning writer Murewa Ayodele and new artist Federica Mancin sees Storm continue to protect the planet, unaware the “most dangerous war in existence” is looming on the horizon. Finally, Jody Houser and Jacopo Camagni’s Generation X-23 reunites Laura and Gabby as they meet their “long-lost friend” and “a new generation of X-subjects” that’ve taken after Laura’s deadly self. All three will arrive in February.
Finally, Marvel unveiled new covers for the Ultimate books as they wind down while Ultimate Endgame plays out. The event comic and the titles it’s spinning out from—Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, etc.—will all end by April 2026. Marvel EiC C.B. Cebulski has recently stated this is a definitive end for the universe, though some of its elements will live on in Earth-616, but it’s unknown what exactly that means. We’ll find just how that spirit will endure, and how much of an ending this really is, in the coming months.
In a new video interview with GQ that draws on fan questions, Garfield read a question from X/Twitter wondering if he and Tobey Maguire would appear as their alt-universe Spider-Men in Doomsday.
The answer was blunt: “No, unequivocally fucking no.” (There was extra emphasis on the swear word.)
If you detect a hint of exhaustion there, this is coming from an actor who started his “I’m not in Spider Man: Brand New Day” denials early this year, when, in a separate GQ piece, he said, “I’m gonna disappoint you,” and said “no.”
He also added, “But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”
That’s a fair summation from a guy who once said, “I ain’t got a call” regarding his then-rumored role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Do you believe him about Avengers: Doomsday? Do you believe him about Brand New Day, for that matter?
We’ll find out next year, when Tom Holland suits up again to star as Spidey in Brand New Day on July 31, 2026, followed by Doomsday‘s arrival on December 18, 2026.
There is a rumor that happens every once in a while. We all start whispering about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield and then the same takes get repeated over and over again. That rumor is that they’re bringing back the former Spider-Man actors for some reason.
The most recent instance of this trend has been happening on social media. Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman: Part II, reportedly posted that he was “trying” to reach out to Sam Raimi. And, according to fan accounts, Tomlin has reportedly shown an interest in a Raimiverse Spider-Man 4.
This bit of information had many online talking about the potential return of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker in the Spider-Man 4 that never happened during his original run as the webbed hero.
?️ Mattson Tomlin, the writer of “The Batman: Part II”, commented under my post that he’s “trying” to reach out to Sam Raimi.
He has also said before that he’s interested in writing a script for ‘Spider-Man 4’ “where Tobey’s Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father.” pic.twitter.com/f0RytQJfis
— Tobey Maguire & Kirsten Dunst Web (@TobeyKirstenWeb) September 30, 2025
Which brings me to my point: Can we please stop trying to bring Tobey Maguire back as Spider-Man? Before you jump down my throat, I am a millennial. I grew up with Maguire as Peter Parker and those movies changed my young life. They were the first movies I went to the midnight premieres for with my brother and they have a soft spot in my heart.
That being said, we have had two other Spider-Man adaptations since and both those actors are better than Maguire’s take on the character. Yes, sorry, but that’s my opinion. Actually, I think that Tom Holland is the best Peter and Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield nailed what makes Peter Parker special, and Tobey Maguire is a pretty good Spider-Man.
So the constant need for people to find ways to return to Maguire is exhausting to me. Even though I believe that Garfield’s franchise was wronged and he deserves another movie, I think we’re too far past that to go back. And I support that endeavor.
Tobey Maguire’s movies were not good enough to warrant this dedication
(Tom Holland’s Instagram)
Let me be honest: I think the Maguire movies were good for what they were. Raimi was proving that a live-action Spidey movie could work and he was having fun with it. But that, to me, is not my Peter Parker. My beloved boy is goofy and nerdy and talks too much. That’s decidedly not what Maguire’s Peter is like.
His Peter is smart, sure, but that’s not why I love Peter Parker. I love how unapologetically nerdy and excited about it Peter is. It is why both Garfield and Holland’s performances spoke more to me than what Maguire did. Which is why I do not understand everyone else’s need to return to Maguire’s performance so badly.
Maybe I just love a more comic accurate/lore based approach to the character’s personality, which is why I tend to like those other performances more. But whatever the reason behind it is, I really do think we need to move away from constantly trying to bring back Maguire’s Peter and tell other stories in the Spider-Man universe. We have our Peter Parker still with Tom Holland but what’s great about Spidey is that it is not just Peter’s world!

New Spider-Man: Brand New Day set photos popped up online today, and one specific photo quickly began making the rounds in viral fashion.
What is shown in the Spider-Man 4 set photos?
The new photos saw production taking place just a day after reports surfaced that Tom Holland was injured while on set of the film. The latest photos don’t show off a ton, but a specific look at what is likely a Spider-Man stunt double looking extremely sad began making the rounds online.
The photo hilariously shows the actor wearing the Spider-Man suit looking completely depressed, staring straight down at the ground in a sad pose. Fans were quick to joke, although other photos show the Spider-Man as much more normal. Check them out below:
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The movie will once again be led by Tom Holland as he reprises his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Emmy winner Zendaya and Jacob Batalo are also expected to return for the sequel.
They will be joined by cast members Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear), Jon Bernthal, and Trammell Tillman, among others. The latter recently played the anti-hero again in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. The movie is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Rachel O’Connor, and Avi Arad.
Spider-Man 4 will be released in United States theaters on July 31, 2026 ahead of Avengers: Doomsday (December 18, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (December 17, 2027) following Doomsday’s delay.

Spider-Man has just come to Magic: The Gathering, but the card game already has other crossovers planned, and different ways to implement them.
Just before the latest Universes Beyond set came to shelves, Magic senior game designer Corey Bowen broke down the new Pick Two Draft, a four-person format (as opposed to the standard eight) which sees players take two cards from their Play Boosters and pass them to their left and right. Bowen explained the developers chose this new way to play as away to help casual players coming into Magic and those linking up in four-person groups. But it also has the added bonus of facilitating smaller Universes Beyond sets in the future.
“How could we represent an amazing corner of the Marvel Universe without trying to fill over 300 card concepts?” wrote Bowen. “If we were focusing only on Spider-Man, there are tons of great stories, characters, and depth, but not enough to meet the demanding threshold of a full Magic set. We also believed solving this problem now would allow us to consider more partnerships that may not to fill the shoes of a full Magic set.”
That Bowen calls out “more partnerships” as a reason for Pick Two is interesting, since Magic: The Gathering has been pushing Universes Beyond collaborations hard in recent years with full sets based on major IP like Final Fantasyand Doctor Who. Days ago, we also learned New York Comic-Con will have a panel announcing a new team-up between Magic and Nicklodeon, its third following ones between Spongebob Squarepants(for Secret Lair) and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not every Nick IP is as big now as they were back in the day (or are that deep), potentially providing a perfect use case for Pick Two.
The Nickelodeon x Magic panel will be held on October 10, where we’ll find out what it is and just how big. And if it’s not this that gets the Pick Two treatment, we’ll eventually learn what Universes Beyond crossover it’ll be.
Disneyland Hong Kong first opened 20 years ago, and to celebrate, the company showed off concept for what’s coming in the future.
Concept art below shows teases for attractions based on Marvel and Pixar. For the superheroes, one art features the Avengers headquarters, while another shows Spider-Man with Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Thor in Asgard around a pod of parkgoers dropping through the Bifrost Bridge. This concept art—and a previously released art of Spidey holding a pod while fighting Doctor Octopus near a portal—suggest a drop ride in the vein of “Mission Breakout.” Disney hasn’t given this ride an official title, but teased it’d be “a team-up with the Avengers for an unexpected adventure!”
This’ll be Marvel’s third addition to the Hong Kong’s Stark Expo in Tomorrowland, and was first announced back in 2024. At the moment, it’s unclear if this attraction is still focused on Spider-Man with some guest stars, or has fully converted into an Avengers attraction that also features the wall-crawler.
Meanwhile, the Pixar art shows Mike, Sully, and others Monsters Inc. workers moving doors around in front of a crowd with Boo hanging around in the background. Like the Marvel attraction, there’s no official name for this, or what it’ll entail; the description for this one promises other Pixar characters will participate in “an all-new immersive theatrical experience celebrating the joy of friendship and the power of play.”
No release window for either so far, but we’ll have more on what’s to come for Disneyland Hong Kong as information comes out.
Marvel Zombies is the forthcoming animated television miniseries created by Bryan Andrews and Zeb Wells. Set in an alternate timeline from the rest of the MCU that was introduced in the “What If…Zombies?!” episode that aired in 2021, the show arrives on Disney+ later this month.
Check out the new Marvel Zombies trailer below (watch more trailers and clips):
What happens in the new Marvel Zombies trailer?
The new Marvel Zombies trailer sees some of the most powerful Marvel Studios characters — including Thanos, Captain America, and many more — turn into undead, flesh-eating creatures. The fate of the world rests in the hands of a small group of survivors, one of whom is Spider-Man. At the end of the trailer, Spidey throws Thor’s Stormbreaker axe directly at undead Thanos; however, the weapon does nothing to stop the zombified villain.
The voice cast of Marvel Zombies includes Awkwafina as Katy, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart, Todd Williams as Eric Brooks/Blade Knight, and Hudson Thames as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, among others.
“After the Avengers are overtaken by a zombie plague, a desperate group of survivors discover the key to bringing an end to the super-powered undead, racing across a dystopian landscape and risking life and limb to save their world,” a description of the Marvel show’s plot reads.
Marvel Zombies is executive produced by Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Andrews, and Wells, while Danielle Costa and Carrie Wassenaar serve as producers. All four episodes arrive on Disney+ on September 24, 2025.

Tom Holland is set to return to the screens with two major projects. The actor will appear in Christopher Nolan’s next, The Odyssey, while also filming for the new installment of Marvel’s Spider-Man.
The actor, while in conversation with Agence-France Presse, revealed that he wrapped up the productions of the Matt Damon starrer and is solely focused on getting the tricks of the superhero right for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The English native was all praises for the Nolan directorial, as he claimed that the movie adaptation is the “best script” he’s ever read. Calling the filmmaker a collaborator, Holland stated that the former knows exactly what he wants.
Tom Holland on his experience working with Christopher Nolan
While sitting down for an interview with the media portal, Holland shared that he had the best time working with Christopher Nolan and the rest of the cast members on the sets of The Odyssey. The actor recalled, “It was exciting. It was different. And I think the movie is going to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”
He further added, “Working with Chris and getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen someone that can work the way that they do, and there is a reason why they’re the best in the business for sure.”
Meanwhile, the actor also added that the script of the film was one of the best. Elsewhere in the talks, Holland revealed that the offer to star in The Odyssey was “the phone call of a lifetime” and “reminiscent of getting the call about ‘Spider-Man’ 10 years ago. It’s an amazing thing for me. I’m super proud and I’m really, really excited.”
As for the release dates, The Odyssey will be out in theaters on July 17, 2026, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be dropped by Marvel on July 31, 2026.
Less than a month out from Magic: The Gathering’s Spider-Man set, Wizards of the Coast has given it a full unveiling with reveals of more cards and gameplay mechanics for its crossover with Marvel’s webhead and friends.
Wizards previously revealed a selection of cards at San Diego Comic-Con back in July. Like those, this new selection sports some amazing art from the company’s internal artists and creatives who’ve previously drawn Spider-Man over the character’s decades-long history, which is on full display here, referencing classic events like the Clone Saga and Kraven’s Last Hunt to more recent turns like Venom becoming the King in Black and Peter and Miles as a dynamic duo in Insomniac’s game trilogy.
Gameplay-wise, the Web-slinging ability works as an alternative cost to spellcasting, and lets players play the listed cost instead of mana, and return a tapped creature they control back to their hand. (Can’t web-sling if you don’t have a creature to control!) Villain cards have a similar version of this with Mayhem, which lets players cast a card from their graveyard for an alternative cost if it was discarded that turn, and it doesn’t change when spellcasting.
Additionally, Spider-Man sets will include one of three different Soul Stone cards with its mana ability instantly available. The next ability lets players harness the Stone to trigger its Infinity ability at the start of their upkeeps. The other Infinity Stones aren’t mentioned in Wizards’ writeup, so they may appear in later crossover sets it’s doing with Marvel. But first, we’ve got the Spider-Man set, which is due to hit shelves on September 26.
Last year, a trailer leaked for a cancelled multiplayer Spider-Man game that was being developed by Insomniac. It seemed cool. So cool in fact, that it seems to have inspired folks to try and use mods to make online web-swinging with friends a reality. And one such mod is now out, and it looks great.
On August 26, as spotted by ComicBook, a new PC-only mod has been released online that allows people to play Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered with up to six other players. The mod was developed by modder hbgda and is available to those who subscribe to the creator’s Patreon. You can see what the mod looks like in action below, courtesy of a video shared by popular creator Kami on TikTok and Twitter.
Spider-Man Remastered just got a working multiplayer mod on PC and it’s amazing.
There are also multiple YouTube videos of the multiplayer Spider-Man mod in action, and it looks surprisingly stable for something as ambitious and wild as this. Sure, it’s not perfect, but considering Marvel’s Spider-Man on PC was never designed to support multiplayer, let alone seven people running and swinging around the map at the same time, the fact that this mod is not only playable but looks extremely polished is incredibly impressive.
Watching footage of hbgda’s mod in action has me hankering to install Spider-Man on my PC and try this out. It also makes me sad that we never got Insomniac’s online multiplayer Spider-Man game. It was reportedly going to be called Spider-Man: The Great Web and would have involved hopping between dimensions alongside your friends. Sadly, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the game was canceled long before the trailer for it leaked in 2024 in the wake of the December 2023 Insomniac data breach.
While it’s very possible the game wouldn’t have had much staying power, which is a problem for a live-service video game, I would have loved to have been able to invite my pals to swing around NYC with me and cause some chaos. At the very least, I hope we see Insomniac add a multiplayer mode to a future Spider-Man game. Doesn’t have to be something elaborate, just something that looks like this mod, but which is playable on PS5, too.
For now, if you want to swing around New York City as Spider-Man with some other Spider-People, your only option is to download this mod and set it up on your PC.
Earlier this summer, just after Hasbro had revealed its own line of Marvel Legends action figures inspired by the long legacy of Capcom’s Marvel fighting games, Bandai wowed us with S.H. Figuarts joining in on the celebration with its very own series of figures, starting with X-Men stalwart Cyclops. Now, Figuarts is back for round 2—and it’s ready to unleash some maximum spider!
This week Bandai officially unveiled that the next series in its own Marvel Gameverse line will be none other than one of the most enduring members of the Capcom/Marvel roster over the years, Spider-Man. Spidey has been a character in Capcom’s fighting game legacy ever since 1995’s Marvel SuperHeroes, and has been playable in every game from Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter through Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite in 2017 (his fighting game career will continue in Arc System Works’ Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, due out next year).
Just like Scott before him, Peter’s figure faithfully recreates the stylized aesthetic of Bengus’ legendary Marvel vs. Capcom artwork, rooted in the Marvel Comics ’90s exaggeration.
Spider-Man will include multiple sets of hands to recreate key poses from the games, including his classic and beloved idle animation, as well as webbing FX parts for swinging poses and recreating his defensive web shield. And just like Cyclops before him, Spider-Man comes with a backboard replicating his Ultimate Web Throw hyper combo move from Marvel vs. Capcom to boot.
If Hasbro’s own Gamerverse series captured some iconic deep cuts like Shuma-Gorath and Silver Samurai from Capcom’s Marvel gaming lineups, it seems clear that Bandai is going for a sheer celebration of the games’ aesthetics, whether it’s with lesser-known characters or the big hitters they’re starting out with in Cyclops and Spidey. These figures look like the artwork burned into every fighting game fan’s Marvel mind; they can hit all the iconic sprite poses you want them to, and they just look fantastic doing it.
Who do you want to see next? Personally, I’m just a Cammy White away from my own preferred Marvel vs. Capcom 2 trio tag team after Cyclops and Spider-Man’s announcements, if Bandai’s down to open the lineup to Capcom characters too. If it’s Marvel characters only though, I’ll need myself a good Captain America to kick off a charging star or six on my shelf.
Pre-orders for the S.H. Figuarts Gamerverse Spider-Man go live around the world on August 28, for an expected release in March 2026.
The MCU’s favorite web-crawler will return to theaters in 2026. Spider-Man 4 will debut shortly after Avengers: Doomsday that year, with star Tom Holland confirming that production will begin mid-2025.
Spider-Man 2’s New Web Wings Make It Feel Like A Proper Sequel
“Next summer we start shooting. Everything’s good to go, We’re nearly there,” Holland said in an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this week. “Super exciting. I can’t wait!” Spider-Man 4, the follow up to 2021’s No Way Home, will officially release on July 24, 2026.
That puts it just a couple months after Avengers: Doomsday, which debuts on May 1 of that year, and stars Robert Downey Jr. as the titular Fantastic Four villain, as was revealed earlier this year at San Diego Comic Con 2024. That grouping recreates the previous one-two comic book punch when Far From Home released shortly after Avengers: Endgame, capping off the multi-year, multi-movie MCU saga.
The sequel will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who made Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and presumably have some tie-in with the greater MCU, though it’s not clear how exactly yet. “I’ve been speaking to [Robert Downey Jr.] a lot, especially about him making his [Marvel] return, which is super exciting,” Holland said on the Rich Rollpodcast earlier this month. “That was a tough secret to sit on because I have a reputation for ruining things and I strategically have done no press.”
The young actor, who also starred in 2022’s Uncharted, an adaptation of the hit PlayStation games, said the script for Spider-Man 4 had him excited. “We have a creative and we have a pitch and a draft, which is excellent. It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me,” Holland told the Rich Roll podcast. “Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we at times were bouncing around the living room like this is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.”
Andrew Garfield was recently asked about a potential return to playing Spider-Man and joked that anything is possible.
What did Andrew Garfield say about returning as Spider-Man?
During a recent Q&A session after a screening of his latest film We Live in Time, Garfield was asked if he was coming back as Spider-Man or not. Garfield jokingly cursed at the question and then said that he hadn’t heard anything as of yet, but he could never rule anything out.
“Oh, f–k you, mate,” Garfield joked. “No, yeah. I get it. Not that I’m aware of right now, but you know, never say never. Nice try.”
For Garfield, this isn’t the first time that he’s been open about returning as Spider-Man. In an interview with Esquire earlier this month, Garfield also expressed interest in coming back, but only if it’s a great concept.
“For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into,” Garfield said. “I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Garfield’s character get a bit of redemption following his appearances in Sony Pictures’ The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, which was much more divisive amongst fans than previous and future Spider-Man movies.
Following the success of No Way Home, rumors swiftly began popping up that Garfield and Tobey Maguire would be reprising their roles as Spider-Man in potential sequel films to their respective iterations. A fourth MCU Spider-Man film is also in the works, with Destin Daniel Cretton attached to direct the project. It’s unclear whether or not the film will see Garfield or Maguire return, however.
Game developer Insomniac confirmed that the studio has no plans to develop story DLC for 2023’s action-adventure Spider-Man 2, likely disappointing many fans who had been hoping for more content.
Spider-Man 2’s New Web Wings Make It Feel Like A Proper Sequel
On October 18, Insomniac and Sony announced that Spider-Man 2 was coming to PC in January, just 15 months after it launched exclusively on PlayStation 5 to rave reviews. It’s one of the fastest turnarounds we’ve seen for a PlayStation-published exclusive title to make the leap to PC and seems to indicate that Sony is fully committed to bringing its hit games to Steam. But for fans hoping that today’s PC port news would come alongside the reveal of story DLC for Spider-Man 2, well, bad news: That’s not happening.
In a post on the official PlayStation Blog announcing Spider-Man 2‘s PC port and what fans can expect, Insomanic’s senior community manager Aaron Jason Espinoza confirmed that the studio isn’t working on or planning any further story DLC for Spider-Man 2 on PC or PS5.
“While we have no additional story content planned for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we’re delighted to bring all of our previously released post-launch content to the PC version, including New Game+, new suits and color variants, Photo Mode features, and more,” said Espinoza.
Fans had hoped for Spider-Man 2 DLC after the first Insomniac Spider-Man game received three paid DLC episodes that made up an expansion known as The City That Never Sleeps. However, Miles Morales, a standalone Spider-Man spin-off game launched in 2020, never got DLC. Still, fans were hopeful, even wondering if they’d get more Venom content. Today’s news confirms that Insomniac is moving on from Spider-Man 2. The studio is working on a previously confirmed Wolverine game as well as an unannounced X-Men game, which we learned about via malicious hack in late 2023. A Spider-Man 3 is also reportedly happening, too.
As recounted by PopVerse, current X-Men editor Tom Brevoort fielded a question about Marvel’s editorial mandates during a panel at Baltimore Comic Con over the weekend. Brevoort replied, “If you’re working for Marvel, the ground rules are all the characters are Marvel’s and Marvel as an institution gets to decide what’s right and what’s wrong for these characters. So there are certain things you don’t want Spider-Man to do— ”
At this juncture, the audience member who’d asked the question originally interjected with a contentious follow-up: “like get back [together] with Mary Jane?” Brevoort assuaged the tense murmurings of the crowd that followed by answering, “He can get back with Mary Jane, he just can’t actually tie the knot with Mary Jane. Those are the ground rules going in. If you’re going to work on whatever character—if you’re going to work on Daredevil, you’re going to have to deal with the fact that he’s blind and he’s probably going to stay that way for a while.”
The insistence Peter Parker must remain single and swinging in the mainline MCU has been a subject of intense debate for years now, coming to a head with the infamous One More Day story arc in 2007. In a desperate plea to keep Aunt May alive for a precious few fleeting years, Parker unwisely forfeited his marriage to Mary Jane in a deal made with the demon, Mephisto. Now, Mephisto did not himself become legally wed to Mary Jane in the bargain; he simply found the annulment to be a fair trade by virtue of being the devil incarnate. It made little sense, but the machinations of gods and devils are beyond our mortal ken, we’re told. However, the deal worked gangbusters for Marvel editorial by removing their star character from the doldrums of marital bliss and placing him back into the unforgiving dating pool of the Marvel Universe. On the whole, readers were not happy with the development.
Despite fan outcry, Marvel refused to budge on the decision and Peter and Mary Jane continue living in sin to this very day. Though as the outlet notes, the couple are indeed back together and legally married in the pages of Ultimate Spider-Man, a series set in a different continuity than the mainline Marvel range. Last month’s issue of the book was also the number one best-selling comic of August 2024, outperforming the mainline title, Amazing Spider-Man, which came in 29th place.
Mapping the Marvel universe is not the kind of thing one can do just by snapping their fingers.
For starters, there are many Earths out there in the multiverse; there are also all kinds of mystical dimensions and other weird locations. But even on just one version of Earth there are many points of interest, from the hometowns of fan-favorite heroes to fictional nations that exist only in comic books. Trying to find every Marvel-ous hangout in New York City? Fuggedaboutit.
Still, for his latest book of cool charts, that’s exactly what Tim Leong did: map the Marvel universe. For his new book, Marvel Super Graphic, Leong made a diagram of mystical planes, an illustration of the proximity of Kamala Khan’s New Jersey residence to Moon Girl’s Lower East Side lab, and even a Mean Girls–esque illustration of who-sits-where in the Empire State University cafeteria.
But that’s just the beginning. Leong—who, full disclosure, once served as WIRED’s design director—filled Marvel Super Graphic with charts and graphics about many aspects of the Marvel comic book universe. Check out some geographically-focused highlights from the book above.
